CHILLICOTHE, OH – Mitt Romney used the final rally on his five-state bus tour to paint President Obama as an "intellectually exhausted" leader, forced to resort to "angry and desperate" tactics in his battle for re-election.
"This is an election in which we should be talking about the path ahead, but you don't hear any answers coming from President Obama’s re-election campaign,” Romney said. “That’s because he's intellectually exhausted, out of ideas, and out of energy. And so his campaign has resorted to diversions and distractions, to demagoguing and defaming others. It’s an old game in politics; what’s different this year is that the president is taking things to a new low."
While stumping in Ohio, the Republican presidential candidate preached to a receptive audience. President Obama focused on energy issues as well, praising wind power while campaigning in Iowa. And VP contender Paul Ryan began polishing his stump speech, laced with attacks on Obama's leadership. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
The speech, delivered before several thousand in the town square of Ohio's first capital city, was designed to contrast then-candidate Obama's soaring language of hope and change with the mud-slinging, increasingly nasty tone of this election’s TV ads and campaign trail rhetoric.
"This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like," Romney said. "President Obama knows better, promised better and America deserves better."
"Over the last four years, this president has pushed Republicans and Democrats about as far apart as they can go,” Romney continued. “And now he and his allies are pushing us all even further apart by dividing us into groups. He demonizes some. He panders to others. His campaign strategy is to smash America apart and then try to cobble together 51 percent of the pieces."
Mitt Romney's running mate, VP contender Paul Ryan, has a voting record that – at times – conflicts with his political identity as a fiscal conservative. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.
On a day that began with a battle over Medicare policy and that descended into a heated back-and-forth over charged comments made by Vice President Joe Biden in southern Virginia, Romney decried the negative tone of the campaign – even as he went on the attack.
Biden tells audience GOP banks would put them 'back in chains'
"Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago and let us get about rebuilding and reuniting America," Romney said.
The Obama campaign responded with a statement pointing out Romney's campaign, too, is engaged in negative attacks over the airwaves.
“Governor Romney's comments tonight seemed unhinged, and particularly strange coming at a time when he's pouring tens of millions of dollars into negative ads that are demonstrably false,” Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said.

I see this post is making the rounds of the Liberal 'Copy/Paste' crowd. I remember "JustDaFacts" used to do this sort of thing all the time. Interestingly, I haven't seen him around here for quite awhile . . .
NOT that I'm accusing him of having multiple accounts or anything . . .
Romeny's changes of heart
It's called "etch a scetch"
No, no, no, Rob. It's called 'evolving an opinion.'
Like Obama on gay marriage . . . and lobbyists in the White House. Oh, and the VAT. And the Lockerbie bomber . . and the rate of withdrawal from Iraq, and eliminating the capital gains tax for small businesses, and posting all bills online for five days before signing them, and the infanticide bill, and halfing the deficit, and reducing earmarks, etc.
I see this post is making the rounds of the Liberal 'Copy/Paste' crowd.
Oh, mega-sized, bold print! Maybe it's not 'JustDaFacts.' Maybe it's Bruce!
Or both.
hahaha yep that's Romney you got to love him.
Ryan has a plan to keep the country going.
Biden has no plan = bankruptcy.
Hey, Babydoll! I was waiting for you. I've been on the two Biden articles. :)
Gem, although Obama/Biden have many, many, other faults, their biggest fault is that they don't see how the role of government is tied directly to the American economy. Or perhaps they do recognize this, but have decided to sacrifice the economy for social engineering.
They can't develop a turn around plan because that would mean they'd have to admit they've failed the American people where it really matters...in our wallets.
They don't have a record to run on, so Obama hands out rose colored glasses at each event, while sniping at Romney's dog story, and pretending that throwing more money down a hole is a grand...nay, patriotic...idea.
Hi Cubs!
And thanks for the details commonamerican1:)
"Ryan has a plan to keep the country going."
During the Bush years, Ryan never met a spending bill he didn't like. He voted for 2 tax cuts that weren't paid for, 2 wars that weren't paid for, a prescription drug bill that wasn't paid for, a bank bail out that wasn't paid for, a massive farm bill that wasn't paid for and the largest expansion of the federal government since LBJ and didn't bother to pay for that. Ryan is a typical borrow and spend He conservative who says one thing then does another.
Charlie.....How can you say that tax cuts were never paid for yet we had record tax revenues? Any reasonable person can see that the tax cuts helped grow the economy and grow revenues to the government. It is just like a sale helps grow Home Depot's profits. Please don't be a flat earth type.
Charlie.....How can you say that tax cuts were never paid for yet we had record tax revenues?
Adjusted for inflation and growth GDP growth, we DID NOT have record revenue. They brought in just about as much revenue as the CBO said they would which was the beginning of the end of a surplus. Then Bush and his Republican congress started spending money like drunken sailors with a weekend pass.
The big question that both sides shy away from......
Bush left a $1.3 trillion deficit.........that's impossible to reduce in 10 or 15 years.......
The only 2 presidents to reduce the deficit they inherited are Clinton and Obama
So what Romney has said is that his plan will add $500 billion in year 2.........
Actually Romney didn't say that.......just EVERY single economist looking at Romney's plan
So if you are a Cheney guy...AKA deficits don't matter.......you LOVE the GOP no matter who it is.
Same debt and deficit policies....it's not even a question.......
One question for you:
If the $1.3 trillion dollar deficit that Obama 'inherited' from Bush is impossible to reduce even given 10 or 15 years, then why did Obama promise to cut it in half in his first term?
Well at least Romney has indicated that he will double it in his first 4 years
The problem with what Bush left is that not one single economist could imagine the damage.
Wall st bankers that make $100 million a year couldn't forecast that disaster
Romney didn't say that. Quit making things up CS.
Common sense.......Impossible to reduce? $880 billion of that $1.3 trillion was Tarp. All Obama had to do was not spend the Tarp money and he would have cut the deficit in half. Instead, Obama has spent the TARP money year after year on one boondoggle after another.
I don't know about angry.....I think scared and desperate is more like it. Why else would they tell so many lies and avoid talking about any policy of substance?
Mitt, stop hiding your TAX RETURNS
You are being deceptive and side-stepping
Just produce 12 years and it will all be over.
You have nothing to hide right??
The angry and desperate one is you.
So people only refuse to disclose superfluous documents when they have something to hide?
In that case, what is Pelosi hiding in her tax returns, and what is Obama hiding in his college records? Fair questions, aren't they?
Cubbie
You and all your other GOP Romeny people keep bringing up PAST crap that THE PRESS (even FOX) AND PUBLIC GIVES A DAMN ABOUT.
Call your local media and see if they'll start it up again.
They won't because it is not news.
BTW, have you ever been to Wrigley?? Where do you live?? Iowa? Nebraska??
Uhhh, first off, I think it's OBAMA that keeps bringing up the past, isn't it? Think 'George Bush.' The guy can't say two sentences in a row without one of them having Bush's name it it.
And given the fact that we just met, that you're kind of a nutty liberal, and that you're an anonymous poster on a random blog site, I reallllllly don't think I'm gonna tell you where I live.
But yes, I have most definitely been to Wrigley Field. Several times, as a matter of fact, and in multiple capacities.
Cubbie,
Bush gave Obama the worst economic conditions in over 80 years. You guys like to blame Obama for the current mess but blame congress for Bush's.
The overall fact is that Bush burned the house down. Worst yet is that he used the credit card doing it. Where were all these fiscal conservatives during Bush's run-up?? Aside from Pat Buchanan and George Will.
BTW, I used to work at Wrigley.
Obama took office and told us he'd fix the problem. He ran his campaign on promises to fix the problem. He told Matt Lauer he'd be a one term president if he couldn't fix the problem in three years. He told us once in office that the stimulus bill was the perfect way to fix the problem. He's even gone so far as to claim that he's FIXED the problem, but he hastily retracts or 'clarifies' such idiocies shortly after uttering them. Bush is no longer President. Obama is and has been. If nothing is Obama's fault, WHY should we vote for him a second time around?
And I don't think Democrats have provided a model of fiscal responsibility either, you know. Look at the porkulus bill. 9300 earmarks and hundreds of billions of dollars of USELESS expenditures such as tattoo removal clinics, research on the migration of loons, cricket control in Utah, weed removal in Maryland, creation of an 'all teen zone' in Georgia, etc., etc., etc. Nothing but stupid wastes of our money. Yet he claimed it would fix the problem.
His Keynesian economics have failed, Rob, and the time has come to admit that.
Btw, I envy you if you've worked at Wrigley. It's quite a place. Not nearly the same feel now that Ronnie passed away, but it's still a special place. (It must be if we get over 3 million people to show up every year to watch a team that last won a World Series under President William Howard Taft.)
His Keynesian efforts have stayed afloat even as the private sector has refused to invest more. His Keynesian efforts have stayed afloat even as one quarter-third of our avg. GDP (government) has been slashed.
At least we agree on the Cubs :)
PTI,
Romney is the modern day Al Capone when it comes to his tax returns. And to the dumb ass posting about college records, put the crack pipe down.
Hmm. Does that make me the 'dumb@ss'?
Irregardless, I'm curious how you've managed to prove Romney's tax evasion charge. You're innocent until proven guilty in this country, but the fact that Mitt's guilty in your eyes means you've proven it . . . right?
I have a question no righty wants to answer.
If Ryan is so confident that he will be the next Vice President of the United States, why is he still running for his congressional seat?
Shouldn't he back out of that race? Is he just hedging his Romney bet?
Curious minds want to know!
Really??? Is that all you have? Compare Romney to Al Capone without any evidence whatsoever? I can do that to. Obama is part of the Muslim Brotherhood and is trying to destroy America from within.
I don't think there's anything hypocritical about that. He thinks they'll win, but "nothing is for sure in this world except death and taxes" according to Ben Franklin.
Interestingly, are you aware that Lyndon Johnson not only ran for his Senate seat in 1960 while running for Kennedy's VP, but also MODIFIED Texas state law in order to allow himself to do so? Texas law at the time only allowed a person to appear on the ballot for one office, but he added in an addendum that made an exception for President or Vice President.
So what Ryan's doing is certainly not without precedent. It's not even without DEMOCRATIC precedent.
I don't care if Ryan's still in the House while he's running for VP. The way I see it, when Ryan loses, he can continue in the House with his record of annoying people and casting votes that people will call him on when he tries to run for president in 2016.
PTI,
Cubswhat ever you are. Innocent until proven guilty means that you reveal why you are not guilty. mitt revealing his tax returns would be a great start to that process. But I guess you don't understand that. Dumb ass.
American voters call goper occupation obstructionists and class warfare.
The goper mobs have done nothing but obstruct this government, economy and society for decades. Even when they were in control they did get anything done.
gopers are all mouth and no substance. And ALL of us have to suffer for theit total and utter incompetence.
The only people who benefit from a right-wing government are the ultra rich, the bankers buying the votes, the legislation and the courts.
In a right-wing society the TRUTH always dies first, just like it did in 1981, followed soon after by safety, civil rights, opportunity, fairness, rule of laws...
Look at a history book. Right-wing societies like what the goper minions so desire is Iran, Saudi Arabia and Columbia. Hell holes, despotic regimes and dictatorships. Look at the United States. For the worst examples look at the red state cesspools Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama - the worst the United States has to offer and suffering from the strangle-hold control of right-wing mobsters and other criminals.
goper mobsters - the most corrupt politicians on planet delusional.
Tax - Great Post!
We have far more than what the democrats offer.....What are the democrats plans to solve our economic solutions? I can explain the republicans plan, but it seems like the democrats don't have any plans. Their only plan is to buy votes with tax payer money so that they can stay in control for as long as possible before things collapse.
You solve problems, not solutions.
I can explain the republican plan as well. Cut services to the poor and middle class and cut taxes for the wealthy. Hope the wealthy don't just stuff it in their pockets and say f u to the little people, but if they do, then oh well. Unfortunately we have not only heard the republican plan, we have lived it. You know the 8 years before Obama took office. It didn't work then, it won't work now. Sorry!
Put....What is the Romney plan?
- Decrease revenue with more tax cuts. So smart, let's pay down the debt with less money coming in.
- Increase Defense spending. The military doesn't want some of the systems the politicians want to make them take.
- Cut entitlements, the poor and unemployed don't need to eat or have a place to live!
- Continue all the programs (trickle down, "Voodoo" economics) that put us into the economic ditch we are starting to climb out of. Yeah, let's double down on stupid.
- Not spend the money to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. How many more bridges need to collapse and take innocent lives for this spending to begin?
- Why does the Republican controlled house need to waste time and money with meaningless, repetitive votes against the ACA? I can see once, but 31 times?!
- Why so many votes to restrict a woman's right to choose her own health care? I've lost count of the anti-abortion votes?
- Why are civil rights not completely extended to the LGBT citizens?
I could go on and on, but it is bed time. Got to go to work in the morning.
Let's not forget almost shutting down the government multiple times, including the deadlock on raising the debt ceiling, a vote which until this year has always been perfunctory.
Or refusing any deal on the budget that involves tax increases to the wealthy, even if they were paired with massive spending cuts.
Or tightening the rules to make it harder for citizens to vote--especially if they come from traditionally Democratic constituencies such as the poor.
But you can pretty much sum up the Republican party agenda in a few words: If Obama is for it, we're against it. In fact, they don't even need to waste hours coming up with their platform at the convention. Just put out that short sentence and be done with it.
Holy....Lets look at things one step at a time.
Bush cut taxes and we had record revenues. JFK cut taxes, increased revenues, Clinton cut taxes increased revenues, Reagan cut taxes increased revenues. Why are you against Romney's plan to simplify the tax code so that we can increase revenue?
Increase defense spending......haven't seen that. I have seen cuts from both Romney and Ryan.
Cut entitlements......When we had a huge increase in entitlements in the past 3 years we created a situation where we couldn't afford the entitlements. Cutting things back to 2007 levels isn't going to drastically hurt, but the path we have is unsustainable.
What evidence do you have that trickle down put us in this ditch? I haven't seen any. Isn't that an opinion instead of fact?
Not go into debt to resurface roads. If we were actually improving infrastructure, that is one thing, but Obama does not propose that. His plan spends money we don't have to do projects that don't really help people significantly.
Why does the Senate was time and money tabling the repeal of ACA 31 times? At least there is some chance that repealing it would create jobs and stimulate the economy.
There are no votes to restrict women's rights or decide their health care. Sorry, but that is propaganda.
Civil rights is one thing, but changing the definition of marriage that has been the same for 6,000 years is another.
@ Michael.
Shutting doe the government in the hopes that the democrats would pay for the things they promise? Why do the democrats refuse to be responsible?
We had a deal with the debt debacle, but Obama shot it down. Again, why are democrats refusing to be responsible?
Tightening rules to make our system better is a good thing? Why are you opposed to making our elections more accurate and free of fraud?
You mena like paying for the wars they started? Oh wait, that was the republicans. How about No Child Left behind? Oh wait, sorry again? Well let me try the Medicare Prescription Benef.... Never mind!
For those who were not so blinded by ideology, during the debt ceiling debacle last year, they almost had a deal that would have ended the argument sooner, a deal that would have involved massive spending cuts far beyond what Republicans were asking for, in exchange for tax increases. That would have provided a quicker path to fiscal solvency. However, even though the Republican party leadership was aboard, the Tea Party members in the House balked.
I have no problem with responsible measures to protect the system against Fraud and as such a photo ID law is not inherently bad. However, it must be designed in a way so as to ensure that nobody is unduly disenfranchised.
But the Republican party in the states has gone beyond the photo ID law, to pass laws that limit access to the ballot, such as restricting absentee voting, or reduce (or eliminate) early voting. You can't tell me those laws were designed strictly to reduce voter fraud--which is such a miniscule problem anyway. The real question is which is the bigger problem--a few cases of voter fraud here or there, or massive disenfranchisement.
Erskine Bowles on Paul Ryan:
My source? The Huffington Post.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle ...
PTI,
His tax returns should not be an issue. Every other POTUS candidate did not have a problem with it. Simple logic dictates that you would not do it unless you have something to HIDE. Especially from " YOU PEOPLE". I guess Ryan's tax returns will have to suffice. Come to think about it, is he only going to give 1 or 2 previous years of tax returns to keep in line with mitt. What if he didn't, and made his tax returns available for the last 8 to 10 years. What would mitt do then???
I don't get it. Why do you have to put out years and years of tax returns? Putting out college records also hasn't been a problem. Why is Obama spending so much time and money trying to hide his? At least Romney has a logical explanation. What is Obama trying to hide?
No presidential candidate has put out (nor has been asked to put out) their college returns, while just about every presidential candidate has put out multiple years of tax returns.
Furthermore, Romney should watch the movie American President, if only for the following quote (from an advisor to the president: "With all due respect, sir, the American people have a funny way of deciding on their own what is and what is not their business."
Whether tax returns should be the public's business or not is a moot question. The events of this election cycle have put that issue in the public limelight, and a failure to address that issue in a way that satisfies enough of the public makes him look like he is hiding something. It may not be fair, but that is the reality, and until Romney faces that reality, he's never going to get that issue behind him.
And no hand-wringing by the right, nor red herrings such as Obama's college records are going to change that fundamental fact.
PTI,
@PTF, He's hiding being the first African-American to be the Harvard Law Review editor. Would you please post your GED scores. And what is exactly is mitt's explanation. OH I forgot " YOU PEOPLE DON'T NEED TO KNOW".
Michael...Actually, most presidents have been forthcoming with their college records. Remember the debate 4 years ago with the GPA's of Bush vs. Kerry?
I_wonder......Why do you guys have a double standard. You want Mitt to be transparent, but don't mind Obama hiding anything he wants?
Put yourself first, there is a big difference between taxes and college transcripts. By the way, where did Romney go to school?
This from the guy who has to hide his tax returns!
Romney, we all knows who's really desperate, but how about your tax returns 10 years
PTI (Pardon The Independent),
And please don't get me started on the "angry and desperate" part of this thread. What a flippin joke.
Ok, I won't . . .
But I'd be interested how you'd categorize Obama's campaigning 'vigor' this year. He's even going further than his 2008 and 2010 spiels. Remember "I want you to get in your neighbor's face!"? Remember "If they're gearing up for a fight, I've got news for them. SO AM I"? Remember "If they bring a knife to the fight, we'll bring a gun"?
Romney Ryan fortune 500 hundred company...the new corporation take over of Wall street ..our money ..S..S...medicaid....medicare..............I can see them both holding the hammer to ring in the bell at wall street
Mitt Romney lives inside his own reality distortion field. I know that politics is a dirty game, but I am astonished how far it has gone in my lifetime. People used to infer slurs; now they just lie through their teeth.
I'm also astonished at how many people are taken in by these lies. Of course, people don't vote their own interests. They vote their values. The conservatives know this. They talk values out the sides of their mouths and then screw the little guy as soon as they are in power. The scary thing is they often think they're being good guys.
Amazing.
Lies, damn lies and politicians.
When is obama going to talk about his record as president?
Just as SOON as he can find something positive to say that will actually fly . . .
Sent you an email, btw. :) ♥
How about his record as Il. senator?
Just imagine what it must be like for Romney these days, spending all his time couped up with a bunch of former Bush/Cheney advisers and staffers. How long could even a frat boy type put up with the likes of little Limbaughs, Bachmans and Becks before sounding like them? Mitt is under a lot of pressure to deliver. Two plus years of propaganda bombardment has barely covered up the GOP's culpability in creating the biggest political/economic/social disaster since Nixon.
Romney isn't just feeling pressure from his GOP bosses either, he has the High Priest of the Mormon Empire to answer too as well. There is trillions of dollars riding on Mitt being able to deliver Federal Lands into the the hands of the Mormon Nation of Utah, plus their allies in Nevada, Colorado, Idaho and Arizona. After Meg Whitman's failure to deliver California, Romney Sr.'s failed run for president and Orrin Hatch's close call with Utah Tea Party this might be a last ditch effort for Mitt to achieve his destined status. No wonder he is starting to sound a little 'postal'.
I think that it would be great talking about ways to make the country better and how to help people. Just imagine what it would be like being Obama trying to take advantage of every situation to try and continue to fool the people into thinking that the emperor clothes.
At what point will obama take responsibility for the economy?
My bet is as soon as Mitt fixes it.
Mitt fixing the economy?
With tax breaks for the rich......
And no other plan?
Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha
Yeah, tax breaks that add $500 billion in year 2 will fix the economy
Have we seen this movie before?
Did it star GW Bush?
How did that movie end?
Looks like the GOP presidential race has turned into a track meet. Romney is running from Romneycare, tax disclosure, many of his previously stated positions, even from certain provisions advocated by his vice presidential selection, and specifics on his supposed "agenda." Ryan is running from portions of his own budget plan, Ayn Rand, honest answers about Medicare/Medicaid, the wishy-washy presidential candidate, and his congressional voting record. Hell, the Olympics didn't have races this good.
And Obama is running from his record and economy. At least Ryan and Romney have ideas. Obama has campaigning and teleprompters.
How do food stamp recipients go from 22 million to 46 million in 3.5 years? Will there be 68 million food stamp recipients by 2016?
How did a budget surplus go from $150 billion to a deficit of $1.3 trillion in 8 years?
GOP policies
You can correlate the depression to those policies.....and attribute all your complaining to those policies and results.....
Get it?
Need further education?
When you are given the worst economic conditions in over 80 years.
Obama spent more in 3.5 years than bush spent in 8.
US DEBTCLOCK.ORG
Obama created 3.7 million jobs in three years. Bush created 3 million jobs in 8 years.
That's a lie, Larry. Obama is going to be the first President in US history to end a term with a net job LOSS. Please don't make up fraudulent information.
Cubs,
He's right.
Clinton's tax hikes created net jobs and Bush's tax cuts created net job losses.
Do you want more unemployment?
PTI,
NO it is not a lie. Check out the facts from from any economist who is not paid for by the Heritage Foundation . gop made the American people suffer to just to oust this man from office. Larry is correct. It was stated that most of the job losses came from the government sector you know smaller government. Until you need them.
"Larry. Obama is going to be the first President in US history to end a term with a net job LOSS."
Wrong Cubs fan. Both Hoover and George W. Bush had a net loss of jobs in their first term. Bush manged to pull it off over 8 years. No other president did that.
Too funny .. and straight out of the right wing handbook under
Projection
"NO DRAMA OBAMA" never gets angry. He gets even.
What is Mitt talking about?
they want a fortune 500 from our SS medicaid medicare..to call it there own...whats funny its broke.they say.bet they can't wait for the open bell..after 4 years if the get elected
We have governments going broke all over the world and you complain about corporations making record profits. I trust my money to the corporations long before I would trust it to the government. History has proven me right. Not to mention I can always fire the corporation if they do a bad job, but the government is doing a terrible job with medicare and we can't change providers.
Ryan was the perfect pick .. The focus has been shifted to fiscal policy, so today Biden plays the race card and Obama plays the dog card. Democrats have nothing left and Republicans will be outspending Dems 3-1 on campaign ads leading up to the election. Let the games begin ..
Good things the dems have been outspending the republicans 3 to 1 so far, or it wouldn't even be a fair match.
You haven't been paying attention, have you, Jesse? The focus is not on fiscal policy ~ its on Medicare survival and funding. Most people do not see that as a core economic issue. Heck, even Republicans refer to it as an "entitlement" program. It won't matter how much money the GOP wastes on campaign ads ~ it won't offset the loser team that those ads promote and which a significant portion of the voters neither trust nor hold in favorable light.
Jim.....The only ones concerned about the survival of the medicare system seem to be the republicans. The democrat plan is to ignore any problems, then let the system collapse on itself.
Last July more people were added to the SS Disablity payroll than people who got jobs.
I wonder if some mindless liberal will add that to a cut and paste list of Obama's accomplishments?
