Updated 5:30 p.m. - Vice President Joe Biden told cafe patrons in Virginia on Tuesday that he could "guarantee" he and President Obama would allow no changes to Social Security.
As a debate over reforming entitlements -- particularly Medicare -- takes center stage in the 2012 presidential campaign, Biden seemed to promise not to allow changes to the program.
"Hey, by the way, let's talk about Social Security," Biden said after a diner at The Coffee Break Cafe in Stuart, VA expressed his relief that the Obama campaign wasn't talking about changing the popular entitlement program.
"Number one, I guarantee you, flat guarantee you, there will be no changes in Social Security," Biden said, per a pool report. "I flat guarantee you."
The pool report noted that most of the patrons at the cafe toward whom Biden was directing his remarks were over the age of 60.
The vice president's language almost hearkens back to some 2011 tough talk by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who vowed not to take up changes to Social Security for another two decades, by which time he might not even be a senator anymore.
"Two decades from now, I'm willing to take a look at it, but I'm not willing to take a look at it right now," Reid said at the time in an interview on MSNBC. "It is not in crisis at this stage. Leave Social Security alone. We have a lot of other places we can look that is in crisis. But Social Security is not."
Mitt Romney has expressed an interest in gradually raising the retirement age, as well as means-testing benefits for the wealthy, but he otherwise hasn't specified his own Social Security proposals.

The soc security program is broken, which no one can deny, but the Dems are just going to stick their heads in the sand. Yeah the republicans mess alot up but you have to give it to them at least they act, right or wrong, and every once and a while they clumsily stumble on something that works. I'm tired of this indecision and avoidance of issues. Joe, Social Security is broke, immigration is broke. just sound bites to get votes. Whats the plan? millions of illegal immigrants are lining up today with the false hope of gaining their citizenship and in reality its only a two year bandage. Everyone in line today will be in the exact same situation, facing deportation, two years from now. Come on guys, make a stand and run with it, do something, show me something, stop worrying about the poll numbers Axelrod is always whispering in your ears. We blew a great change on getting things done in 09 & 10.
Except in two years, the government will know that they are here and can more easily find them.

In my humble opinion Congress ought to cut their pensions before any Social Security recipient has to extend their working years or take a penny cut. The nerve of those jerks.
I'd be happy with them keeping their pensions if they would cut the $3.5 billion that lobbyists spend on them. That simple fact alone ought to tell Americans who is running the country...but it just seems to float right over their heads. I just wish the national IQ was higher.
If changes or adjustments are not made, SS as we know it will be kaput. By the time SS reaches this stage, both BO & JB will have long been out of office and will say it was all Bush's fault and the Republican's as well for doing nothing.

I now live in a country where a majority of people seem quite comfortable saying they cannot take care of themselves but need the rich to pay their bills for them. What happened to the principles that made America great, individualism where we actually take care of ourselves? Also - do you pay more in taxes than you have to or do you, like Romney, try to pay only what you have to? Criticize someone for doing just what you do - America at its best. I know - too many loopholes for the rich - where do those loopholes come from? - our legislators (the government). Obama wants the rich to pay their 'fair' share - I'd like 'fair' defined, just what is fair? If loopholes the Government allows are unfair - OK - what's Obama proposing as far as legislation goes to fix that? nothing just blaming the rich for doing what we all do - pay what we legally owe and no more! My family budget is HURTING (I'm not a 1% person) so we have to spend less. Obama's solution to all this is to have Government spend more - huh? We should be hearing every week what useless, wasteful government programs are being CUT - maybe then we could use that money to pay for all the entitlements (free stuff) the Government gives peopel who can't take care of themselves.
Want to solve the (small) Social Security and Medicare shortfalls? Simply subject all Adjusted Gross Income to Social Security and Medicare taxes!
