Obama alludes to dog-on-roof story to ding Romney

OSKALOOSA, IA – President Obama seemed to reference the infamous tale of the Romney family dog riding on the roof of the presumptive GOP nominee's car for most of a road trip during an extended riff here on wind energy.

Criticizing Mitt Romney’s opposition to wind energy production tax credits, Obama also went personal, bringing up an anecdote about a Romney family vacation.

Obama mocked what he said was Romney’s wind energy policy, quoting him from a March 6 speech in Zanesville, Ohio when he said, “you can’t drive a car with a windmill on it.”

“That’s what he said about wind power,” Obama told about 850 supporters standing outside a classic, American flag-bedecked farmhouse at the Nelson Pioneer Farm Museum here.

“Now, I don’t know if he’s actually tried that. I know he’s had other things on his car,” Obama said as the crowd applauded, understanding the reference.

Liberal critics and Democratic groups supporting the president have pounced on the Seamus story to criticize Romney's character, suggesting Romney is insensitive, but this is the first time the president himself has referenced it himself. (Obama aides have previously invoked the story.)

But after the quick Seamus allusion, the president went right back to accusing Romney of not understanding the importance of wind energy in Iowa.

“If he wants to learn something about wind, all he’s got to do is pay attention to what you’ve been doing here in Iowa,” the president said, noting that the wind industry now supports 7,000 jobs in Iowa.

And new statistics from a Department of Energy report on wind power, which the president referred to Tuesday, also reflect the importance of wind as a policy and political issue: it’s one of the top two states when it comes to in-state wind energy generation, generating 18.8 percent in 2011, second only to South Dakota.

“If [Romney] knew what you’ve been doing, he’d know that 20 percent of Iowa’s electricity now runs on wind,” Obama said to applause. “Powering our homes and our factories, and our businesses in a way that is clean and renewable.”

In a statement the Romney campaign said Obama's Seamus reference showed that the president "will do anything to distract from his abysmal record."

"After sanctimoniously complaining about making a 'big election about small things,' President Obama continues to embarrass himself and diminish his office with un-presidential behavior," campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said in a statement.

After a series of local interviews here, the president heads to campaign events in Marshalltown and Waterloo, continuing to wind his way east through the state.

I think the Seamus story is VERY pertinent to Romney's character! How insensitive to the dog AND his own children!

Way to go, Mr President!

As long as it's truthful,...EVERYTHING in Romney's 'war' chest is fair game. And if his wife wants to inject herself into the fray,...then her BS is also fair game.

Now that Romney is using his children as surrogates (much like Palin, eh?) - then guess what? They are fair game, too. The Republicans have not proven very nimble with an opponent that fights back. They are used to being the bully and putting Dems on the defensive. And historically Dems have 'taken the high road'. Well guess what?

THAT DOG DON'T HUNT! (Literally and metaphorically). We are a new brand of Dems who won't just let them get away with their lies and feckless behavior.

And I am PROUD to stand with my fellow LIBS and not back down from this fight. It's one that is worth the battle!

PS. I hope people are really looking into the Paul Ryan debacle. For a bunch of women haters,...they sure seem to marry well, eh?

not sure about you guys, but if I sat down at our dinner table and there was food on the plate I never, not once in my childhood questioned what I tried, if I did not like it and there was other food, then I was not made to eat it, however, I had to try it first though, and if that was all we had to eat that day (I'm not particularly fond of deer meet) I ate it or went hungry. As an adult I eat whatever I want that I can afford, and I have never, ever tied an animal to anything with an engine - as an adult or as a child.

Republicans are a strange strange bunch. They have no clue what they're talking about. And the funny thing is, they know it.

Glad to see some grown ups in their party who will actually - you know - tell the GD truth:

Think Progress: David Stockman calls Ryan Budget Empty Fairy Tale

The Ryan Plan boils down to a fetish for cutting the top marginal income-tax rate for “job creators” — i.e. the superwealthy — to 25 percent and paying for it with an as-yet-undisclosed plan to broaden the tax base. Of the $1 trillion in so-called tax expenditures that the plan would attack, the vast majority would come from slashing popular tax breaks for employer-provided health insurance, mortgage interest, 401(k) accounts, state and local taxes, charitable giving and the like, not to mention low rates on capital gains and dividends.

…In short, Mr. Ryan’s plan is devoid of credible math or hard policy choices. And it couldn’t pass even if Republicans were to take the presidency and both houses of Congress. Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan have no plan to take on Wall Street, the Fed, the military-industrial complex, social insurance or the nation’s fiscal calamity and no plan to revive capitalist prosperity — just empty sermons.

_________

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney described the Medicare cuts included in Paul Ryan’s budget as “extraordinary,” during his visit to a mining operation in Beallsville, Ohio on Tuesday.

__________

Romney and Ryan. This is the best the GOP could come up with, with all their money and media outlets?

Romney and Ryan. Two of the biggest idiots we have ever seen, in a party bursting at the seams with idiots.

You gotta admit, the lefties have a sense of humor, and an uncanny ability to remain blind in the eyes of the truth. Jobs are being created and the stock market is doing well, for global companies that have taken their jobs and profits elsewhere (see Apple and GE for details). And the US GDP rate is going down while unemployment goes up. Lets see Obama take the credit for that "steady path".

You Conservatives claim to love facts, so let's take a look at the FACTS presented in this article.

1) Romney mocks Wind Power by saying “you can’t drive a car with a windmill on it.”

2) President Obama, in the middle of a speech supporting Wind Power, mentions Romney's mocking comment and makes a minor joke about the "dog on the roof" incident.

3) President Obama then continues to make his case for the job-creating and environmental benefits of tax credits for wind power and other forms of alternative energy.

Which part of this is "nonsense", and who exactly are the "dopes"?

Caesar Augustus: any idea when Obama is going to focus on the economy

Hell, Caesar - Obama has focused on the economy, with positive results.

People seem to forget how bad things were: massive job losses, plummeting home values, stock market crashing, negative GDP, and unemployment over 10%. All of these things were caused at least in part by the reckless tax cuts, spending, and deregulation of the Bush administration that Romney/Ryan advocate a return to.

Now we have the stock market doubling in value, positive GDP, slow but steady job increases, and unemployment around 8%. Disappointing, maybe, but we are still much better off than we were - especially in comparison to the rest of the world, which is still struggling mightily.

A few key facts:

Unemployment: 10.1% in October 2009, the highest rate since 1983 and roughly twice the pre-crisis rate. Since then, steadily reduced to around 8.3%

Stock Market: Dow Jones was at 6,600 in March 2009. It has since recovered - over 12,000 during most of 2011, over 13,000 in 2012.

GDP: GDP growth of 2.2% in Jan. 2008 rapidly declined to a negative growth rate of -5% in 2009. Growth rates have been positive since then to a high of 3.5% before settling to a rate of around 2% growth per quarter.

Home Values: US Home Values declined by almost 25% from Jan. 2007 thru Feb. 2012. The rate of decline slowed and homes values have increased for the last 4 months, with June reporting the first year-over-year increase since 2007.

So sad that Republicans continue to promote oil as the best approach for the US.

The Republican position makes enemies like Venezuela, Russia, and Iran stronger.

We need to expand on the Democrat philosophy of supporting our local businesses and local energy production? Democrats also protects our military families from wars over Middle East oil.

By increasing our renewable energy in the US, we are able to export more US natural gas. Again, growing American businesses that create more jobs for Americans. It's the Democratic way.

So, Obama is talking about Romney for leaving his dog, in a kennel carrier, on the roof of his car.

What about Obama leaving his own brother in a hut in Africa?

One would think that neglecting one's own blood was worse than putting a dog in a carrier and strapping onto the roof of your car.

You would be checking on it when you stopped and make sure it had water and even if it was the worst thing for the dog, when you stopped you took him out and fed and watered him again while providing for all his other needs.

However, if you knew your brother lived in a small hut and did not have enough food and care, and if the same guy wouldn't help his own aunt with medical expenses, even though his a millionaire?

ANd you want to talk dog in carrier?

You can't really believe you have a point here. Where do you come from?

I know and talk to several democrats and they are not as openly ignorant as most of these post authors.

It is pretty damn funny though. I think some of them actually believe they're making a contribution. To what?...I have no idea.

Perhaps the brother, if he really exists, wants to live in a hut in Africa. What proof is there that he exists or that Obama's relatives lived on welfare or any other government program? States are supposed to check things out before just handing over welfare to just anybody. If the state they were in failed to catch them that's too bad. Who was in charge at the time?

    #11.3 - Tue Aug 14, 2012 4:40 PM EDT

Ugh. Mr. Obama does indeed have a half-brother in Kenya. Googling Obama half brother renders many results. here is one of many articles:

I guess if you needed to see "proof" you could go see the movie discussed in the article. There is also a wikipedia.org article on Mr. Obama's family.

Mr. Obama also has a step sister (she is Indonesian)

There have also been reports about Mr. Obama's aunt and uncle. At one time she was living in subsidized housing. He got in the news with a DUI or related driving violation. Mr. Obama's aunt did live on state assistance for a number of years, but has stayed out of the news since Mr. Obama's election. The aunt and the uncle are not US citizens, although the aunt did receive a green card after Mr. Obama was elected to office - and at some point was living in the US illegally prior to getting the green card.

As for how she got on the welfare rolls, etc. do the research yourself.

Personally, I don;t care about the man's relatives, but it is very telling that he has not made any attempt to assist his brother. However, I did read that the Obama's did try to do some charity outreach to help the Kenyan village where his grandfather was from --

I don;t care for the snarky comments about Mr. Obama's family, frankly, but in general the overall snarkiness (and occasionally obscene) of these boards really does not put anyone in a positive light.

Less anger overall would be a good thing.

I was reading an article which showed that in every election Mr. Obama has "won" by means of character assassination and getting access to sealed divorce records - granted the access was often illegal.

If the American people have any sense, they will use wisdom when they vote.

The Dems now are very frustrated. They worse they can dig up on Mr. Romney is that he does not womanize, smoke, or drink; he earned his money cleaning up bankrupt companies and rehabilitating them or by building up start ups or troubled companies. (Burger King? Staples? Ever heard of them?) They tried to get him on his money, but John Kerry is 3 X wealthier than Romney. Nancy Pelosi and many other Dem "luminaries" are also quite wealthy.

So Obama can't dig up dirt: there's no dirt to dig. Romney has also learned to stay focused and that the media will not treat him fairly at all.

Senator Harry Reid gets anonymous phone calls about Romney's taxes -- like Joe McCarthy used to get anonymous phone calls about Communists... But we haven't seen Harry's tax returns ever. the Tax Return thing is just a dodge to try to find something to pick on Romney about. Meanwhile, Mr. Obama's personal records from college, etc. are sealed.

It's so funny that anyone that disagrees with the right wing, according to them, doesn't have a job, or is on welfare. That means that those 68,000,000 voters that voted for Obama don't have jobs and are on welfare.

I wonder how that explains that in my city, Obama polls at 64%, favorable, and the unemployment rate is 6.1 percent?

Again we never accused the right wing of being the smart ones. These Neo-Nut Right Wing Drones Conservatives going on with their crazy Rush talk, just crawl out of the wood work from time to time.

And your comment -

Most likely many of these Neo-Nut Right Wing Drones Conservatives need jobs and are on welfare.

is an oxymoron. And thanks for assuming I thought libs don't have a job, I just asked who actually pays taxes...but glad you think that. Tells us you dont.

Well Klara, seeing as they pay someone to store the horse, feed the horse, groom the horse, train the horse, etc etc. I guess they still CREATE jobs, and last time i checked that helps pay someones bills, you need economics 101 before you spout off your ignorance. What do you think the rich do with their money swim in it? No the spend and invest, which creates more demand for jobs which in turn creates more tax revenue.

              President Obama says about Romney,

“If he wants to learn something about wind, all he’s got to do is pay attention to what you’ve been doing here in Iowa,” the president said, noting that the wind industry now supports 7,000 jobs in Iowa.

And I say that with President Obama talking in Iowa, we can add another 70% of wind/bull S t that comes out of his mouth. Why does not he talk about the conservationists that are talking about all the birds that get killed.

Distraction and digression are key elements of the Obama campaign. Wind is nice but must be converted to another form of energy to power industry and must be at a more constant level to justify teh investment. So wind in Iowa may work well -- but it may not work very well in 2012 for Lima, Ohio for example.

The USA has oil and gas resources; shale deposits in Canada, etc. that Mr. Obama won;t let be exploited. that was the point Romney was making. In 2030 wind may be much more viable. However it is killing off lots and lots of birds in California - many of whom were once protected species. How many eagles die in windmills? How many is too many?

Tax returns will show if Willard pays his fair share in US taxes and what countries he hides his money in. He even wanted more years of tax records from Ryan than he's willing to give. Obviously Willard has some sort of tax problem.
