MIAMI – Stumping here on Monday, Mitt Romney told reporters he couldn’t think of how he differs from running mate Paul Ryan when it comes to their views on Medicare.
“We haven’t gone through piece by piece and said, ‘Oh, here’s a place where there’s a difference,’” Romney said of his running mate’s plan. “But my plan for Medicare is very similar to his plan, which is ‘Do not change the program for current retirees or near-retirees but do not do what the president has done and that is to cut $700 billion out of the current program.”
Sustaining Medicare, the government’s health care program for seniors, will likely become a central issue in this election campaign – particularly because Ryan, the House budget committee chairman, crafted a controversial plan that analysts say would increase costs for low-income and unhealthy seniors down the road.
In the days since Paul Ryan joined the Republican ticket, the spotlight has been on Ryan's proposal for government to give seniors money to buy their own insurance – part of a sweeping Medicare reform plan. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
Romney was less committal Monday than he was in January, when he said during a debate that Ryan’s Medicare reform plan was “absolutely right on.” Instead, he said that he and Ryan agreed on the main points – and that he planned to restore the $700 billion cut from Medicare under Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

There’s a hitch, however: Ryan’s budget makes the same $700 billion in Medicare cuts as the Obama plan. CNBC's Scott Cohn explains:
“The Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – does cut the growth of Medicare by $700 billion over 10 years. But benefits to seniors actually increase under Obamacare, which reduces payments to providers in exchange for more people covered by insurance. What’s more, the Ryan plan – approved by the House – cuts Medicare spending every bit as much as Obamacare does. In fact, it incorporates the very same budget projections, even as it repeals Obamacare. That’s what you call having it both ways.”
Faced with questions about Ryan's support for these cuts, the Romney campaign clarified its position Monday evening and disagreed with those cuts.
"Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have always been fully committed to repealing Obamacare, ending President Obama’s $716 billion raid on Medicare, and tackling the serious fiscal challenges our country faces," Lanhee Chen, Romney’s policy director, said in a statement. "A Romney-Ryan Administration will restore the funding to Medicare, ensure that no changes are made to the program for those 55 or older, and implement the reforms that they have proposed to strengthen it for future generations."
At his last event of the day here in Miami, Romney did not mention Medicare or Obama’s health care reform, focusing instead on economic issues. But when Paul Ryan comes to Florida, where retirees make up a sizable part of the population, it would be safe to assume that Medicare reform will once again take center stage.

The now-fleshed-out Republican ticket has truly energized the party "base" but upon close inspection you see it has also energized the Democratic "base," perhaps even more so. While Republicans are throwing money at the race, Democrats are focusing on turning out the vote which makes a lot more practical sense than waging a money war with millionaires. This election is fastly becoming a battle between the average person and the monied elite and the numbers forecast the outcome of that struggle. It was Lincoln who stated, "God must love poor people ~ He made so many of them." We will ultimately see if an election can be bought or if "We, the people" still control our political destiny.

Everyone keeps saying the country is facing a national emergency because we have to much debt, that medicare is going broke, there are not enough jobs, not enough revenue etc. !
We have many corporations, banks, businesses, individual wealthy people, there are people running for office who spend millions of dollars trying to get elected, there are millions looking for work, millions who have lost their homes and their businesses, and they say it will take many years for the recovery to happen, This all working together constitutes a national emergency!
These problems can be solved in just a few months if the leaders would make the right decisions! If the President and the congress would declare this a national emergency, and pass a bill that would require the banks, corporations, business, insurance companies, and everyone who can pay to pay cash money on a sliding scale towards the debt, they could raise five trillion dollars, and pay it on the debt.

There are wealthy people who could pay a million, many oil companies or even middle class workers could afford to pay five thousand dollars, the point is it would not be that hard to raise five trillion dollars to bring the debt down, and get this economy going,

Hi, I'm Paul Ryan and I have a bold new plan for medicare. That's right in 2023 I will fix medicare. Some have said I'm throwing the ball so far down the field that by the time it comes down it will be a new game. That's crazy, 2023 is just around the corner. I know this plan has been shot down repeatedly by Republicans and Democrats but if I keep trying it has got to pass. Remember if you want bold changes in 2023 vote for Romney because he backs bold changes in 2023.

Neither Romney nor any of his surrogates has been able to give one example of how his plan is different from Ryan's. They have been asked repeatedly over the last couple of days, and even this morning on CNN a Romney campaign spokeswoman could not give an answer. It's hard to believe that during the time they were considering Ryan as a running mate that they did not anticipate this question and have some readily available answers.

What Republicans hope you won't discover is that both the Obama plan and the Ryan plan strip $700-billion out of Medicare funding. The huge difference is that with the Obama plan, that money is redirected within the healthcare plan while the Ryan proposal would take it out altogether to offset lost revenue created by more tax cuts for the privileged. Anyone who attempts to tell you differently is simply spreading the lie ~ the evidence stands on its own without the need for fancy and inaccurate rhetoric and that evidence can be examined by anyone who has the courage to find truth.

The cost savings in Medicare are very obvious and common sense. After pre-existing conditions are covered and more Americans have health insurance coverage, those turning 65 will be less likely to immediately take advantage of Medicare to have postponed surgeries and treatments that they had no health insurance coverage for previously. This includes knee replacements, hip replacements, heart disease, etc..
Postponing needed health care usually results in higher cost health care. It only makes sense to shift some costs from Medicare to subsidizing health insurance for those under 65. It reflects reality.

Add in rehab (the longer one limps or reduces their activity level, the longer it takes to properly rehabilitate) and of course it does. Plus the risk factors of surgery increase as one ages, so the likelihood of negative side effects increases as does the length of the hospital stay. Undiagnosed conditions like diabetes also increase health care costs the longer they go untreated.
Maybe non-life threatening surgeries should be paid for by the recipient. Don't mean to sound cold, but there's don't be surprised to see hospital's mining human joints for gold.
When you can't walk without extreme pain, your cardiovascular system does not get the work. House hold chores don't get done, work performance suffers. Long term disability can result and we all help pay for that. It is my belief that maintaining a healthy marketplace has always been the job of government from the Age of Kings til now. Part of that role is to help maintain healthy workers, a healthy and honest business climate, and an educated workforce. We can afford it as a society and it pays dividends in having healthy workers able to work hard for their employers.

But when voters are polled on individual aspects of Obamacare such as coverage of children until age 26 or covering pre-existing conditions, they favor it overwhelmingly. Reality will eventually trump Republican fear tactics and that is what Republicans fear most. That Obamacare, once it is implemented completely, will be popular with the American people.
The good women of America will not allow legislation that would dismantle Planned Parenthood or threaten the rights their fore sisters fought for over many generations. Because state governors have worked hard these past few years to erode women's rights does not mean that women will be so ignorant as to allow for these kind of changes on a national level. During the Republican presidential primary, Mitt Romney’s opponents tried to take him down by using his former support for legal abortion as proof that he’s not really pro-life. In the general election, Barack Obama is taking the opposite approach by characterizing the ex-Massachusetts governor as an anti-choice radical.

AFA doesn't cut waste it added to it please tell me why hiring new IRS agents are part of the AFA plan? What does the IRS have to do with affordable health care? WASHINGTON – The forecast for the Medicare program remains the same as last year, with the program expected to remain solvent until 2024. But the program’s solvency depends on several financial and political assumptions that are unpredictable.
The Medicare Trustees Report, released Monday, said that by 2024, the Medicare program will become exhausted and would, in 2024, only have funds sufficient to pay 87 percent of costs.
Issues such as the 31 percent Medicare reduction to physician pay, the Supreme Court decision on the Affordable Care Act and what happens with the deficit reduction agreement to cut Medicare spending will affect the program, said the trustees in their report.
“Lawmakers should address the financial challenges facing Social Security and Medicare as soon as possible,” the trustees said in the conclusion of their report. “Taking action sooner rather than later will leave more options and more time available to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time to prepare.”
“The Trustees Report tells us that while Medicare is stable for now, we have a lot of work ahead of us to guarantee its future,” said Marilyn Tavenner, the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in astatement reacting to the Medicare Trustees Fund report. “The Affordable Care Act is giving CMS the ability to do this work, with tools to lower costs, fight fraud and change incentives so that Medicare pays for coordinated, quality care and not the number of services.”
While the Obama administration found in the report evidence supporting the benefits of the Affordable Care Act to the Medicare program, Republicans of the GOP Doctors Caucus claimed the report shows how the ACA is undermining patients’ access to Medicare services.
“The Medicare Trustees report makes it clear that we need action now to preserve and protect this vital program for current beneficiaries and future retirees,” said Rep. Larry Bucshon, MD, (R-Ind.), in a statement released by the GOP Doctors Caucus. “The aging population and rising costs in healthcare are contributing to the approaching date of insolvency.
