Romney accuses Obama of running campaign of 'smear,' 'dirt,' 'deception'

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and his newly tapped running mate will head to different parts of the country today as they campaign to win over voters in the race for the White House. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Mitt Romney returned to the campaign trail in this critical swing state Monday morning without his new running mate, but armed with new rhetoric accusing President Obama of running a dishonest campaign meant to deceive the American people.

"With a record, which has been as disappointing as the record that he’s demonstrated over the past four years, the president’s campaign has resorted to a very unusual tactic," Romney said. "It’s smear. It’s dirt. It’s distortion. It’s deception. it’s dishonesty. It diminishes the-- it diminishes the office of the presidency itself."

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign rally at Flagler College on Aug. 13 in St Augustine, Fla.

With those remarks, Romney may have been pre-butting Democratic attacks on his running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Ryan's Medicare overhaul plan would turn Medicare into a voucher or "premium support" program for those that would qualify for Medicare in 10 years (those 55 and younger). The plan would cap the amount that can be spent, prompting critics to say it would likely shift the burden, or the rest of the cost, to seniors.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd  breaks out the decision app to see how Romney's choice for running-mate might do harm to the duo when it comes to gaining the senior citizen vote.

The plan has become a lightning rod on both sides of the aisle. Romney contrasted the Republican ticket's plan with what he claimed were $700 billion in cuts to Medicare as part of the president's healthcare reform act.

But as First Read wrote this morning: "What Obama did under the health care law was reduce the rate of growth in non-essential services (like Medicare Advantage), as well as increase premiums for higher-income recipients. That doesn't affect the Medicare benefits that current/future seniors receive."

"We want to make sure we preserve and protect Medicare," Romney claimed.

Romney supporters at the morning event here downplayed the negative effect a renewed focus on Medicare reform might have here in Florida, with its large voting block of senior citizens.

"It's going to change, but its not going to change drastically and nobody is going to be deprived," said retired lawyer Bill Graham, a Romney supporter. "Now, how that's coming about in Ryan's plan? At least he's got a plan. At least he's got something that can be laid out and looked at. "

This is going to be Democrats' challenge -- to convince people that what they're saying about the Ryan plan is actually true. But Democrats also have to be careful not to overplay their hand. On MSNBC's The Daily Rundown this morning, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs claimed that his father, who's 83, would be getting a voucher.

Todd pointed out that's false. “Your father is not going to get that, because they’re not going to do anything to him" because the plan would not affect those older than 55.

Phebe Wehr, a retiree from St. Augustine, said Romney and Ryan needed to be much more specific in selling their plan to current seniors.

"People are out there saying on their placards, 'Don't take away my Medicare;' they won't be," Wehr said. "So, they have to make that a lot clearer. I think Ryan's programs are going to be misunderstood."

Romney also used some new language to pump up the energy level today, which was diminished from Sunday night's rallies in part by slow security lines which left hundreds of supporters on the sidewalk outside the metal detectors and single security checkpoint.

"I know there are people around the world who are always critical of America, have something negative to say, say our greatest days are in the past. Baloney," Romney said. "We just won more Olympic medals than any other nation on Earth. We also just, we just landed on Mars and took a good look at what's going on there. And I know the Chinese are planning on going to the moon, and I hope they have a good experience doing that, and I hope they stop in and take a look at our flag that was put there 43 years ago!"

Romney has been critical of President Obama on space. At an NBC debate in Tampa during the GOP primary he said space should be a "priority." But he didn't specify how much he would spend, whether he would increase or decrease NASA's budget, but instead called for a "collaborative" effort between government, commercial enterprise, and universities.

At another debate, Romney mocked Newt Gingrich's moon colony idea, but also lamented the idea of candidates going state to state with big promises.

"The Speaker comes here to Florida, wants to spend untold amount of money having a colony on the moon," Romney said. "I know it's very exciting on the Space Coast. ... Look, this idea of going state to state and promising what people want to hear, promising billions, hundreds of billions of dollars to make people happy, that's what got us into the trouble we're in now. We've got to say no to this kind of spending."

Also part of the program today -- Florida's junior Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Romney admitted was vetted for the vice-presidential slot, but was passed over in favor of Ryan, a decision about which some Floridians were circumspect.

"I thought if he wanted to win he should have picked Marco Rubio," said Paul Merana, 70, a retired military officer. "But Paul Ryan is a good second choice."

Let's talk about the economy. When did it fail? After 8 years of whom running the country?

Rising gas prices? Who's in bed with the big oil corporations? Sounds like we should raise their taxes to help pay down this debt!

This weeks price increase is because of the drought in the midwest?

Next week it will be because of a flood! Always there's an excuse....................

Now we have the chick little campaign form the libs with Ryan throwing granny over the cliff but the left had no problem in 2008 when Obama throw his grandmother under the bus.

Who just gutted billions out of medicare to help pay for the hugh azz mistake call Obamacare? Please do not come back with your lame azz comparison of Obamacare being Romneycare. I live in MA and didn't support Romneycare because I know the dems in the state would get a hold of the program and make it another giveme program for the parasite of this state who vote for the Dems and I wasn't disappointed.

Do you ever post anything other than your faxed talking points from the left if you ever had an original thought it would be refreshing?

Wow!!! This election cycle has turned into a third grade verbal argument where one kid accuses the other of the EXACT thing that he/she is doing. This would be pure COMEDY if it weren't for the serious nature of the BS attacks.

Romney says that the Obama campaign is using lies and deception whilst his campaign is running ads that accuse Obama of ditching the work requirement for welfare. For those of you who don't come out from under the Rush Limbaugh/Faux news rock these claims are TOTALLY baseless and are outright LIES. Do the research if you don't believe me.

The unemployment rate for private sector jobs has been improving since Obama took office... the jobs that are being lost are the public sector jobs which the Repugnicons, teapublitards and conservatives in general have been fighting for by pushing for reductions in gov spending and reducing gov size. Public sector job loss is a MAJOR reason the unemployment rate is so high.

Obama/Biden are not perfect but Romney/Ryan would be an unmitigated disaster for the middle class, Welfare (see voucher program in ryan plan) and education spending. The ONLY ones to benefit from this ticket will be corporations and the top 2%.

Well, tell us who? Obama sure didn't gut billions out of medicare. Inquiring minds want to know - who gutted Medicare? The only medicate gutting going on right now is the Romney/Ryan plan which will "gut" millions of seniors from the program, if the budget is adopted. Mitt Romney has some nerve to be talking about the Olympics. As if it was not EMBARRASSING ENOUGH of him to go there and open his big ol'mouth just to have flies enter into it.

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney want you to believe that they will "protect" Medicare. They are talking about "protecting" business that they will create from it. They will make sure that all seniors pay "their fair share" while he and his friends keep on cheating the system. The proof is that he STILL WON'T SHOW HIS TAXES.

You people ALSO realize that he signed a law to ban assault weapons in his state, yes? For God's sake, do some research before you put your support behind this wolf in sheep's clothing!

I'd rather see Obama serve another 4 years than this corporate shill get elected and move to give more and more power to corporations who will then give we the people less and less power.

Fair enough. And I definitely look forward to the debates when those topics get brought up. Personally, I'd prefer to see military spending brought back to pre 9/11 levels. Our military was doing just fine on $350 billion a year, one trillion a year is ridiculous.

Really though, we need to get corporate money OUT of our political system. Problem is that it's so deeply dug in I'm at a loss for where to begin...

*edit* and of course, I would expect a responsible stepping down of military spending over a period of years, not just BAM back to previous levels :-)

Yeah, campaign finance reform would go a long way to fixing the system I think. Make it a set "season" (to use your word for it) and I would love it if there was a spending cap. That way no matter how rich the candidate, he/she can't spend more on adds than a less well off opponent. Make it about their qualifications and not how much money they can raise.

Do you vote for the party that believes people are the ones who should vote and their vote should count? Or the party that believes that corporations are people too and should be able to vote whether they are American corporations or not, and their vote counts more than yours because they have so much more money than you?

Excuse me but one more: how many Democrats took a pledge with a lobbyist before they took a pledge to uphold the constitution? How many Republicans? These examples are not mud, they are facts.

...the president’s campaign has resorted to a very unusual tactic," Romney said. "It’s smear. It’s dirt. It’s distortion. It’s deception. it’s dishonesty. It diminishes the-- it diminishes the office of the presidency itself."

And I'm gonna tell Mommy! Come on, seriously, the "very unusual tactic" that Mitt isn't used to is someone telling him he's wrong.

And if you're "dirty," for example lying about your taxes, you should expect to get criticized about it. If you are hiding unethical/unAmerican activity from voters it is not a smear -- it is not libel if what someone says about you is true. Mitt paid less than a 13.9% tax rate and that is the truth!

You can know for certain when Mitt "dost protest too much" and/or chuckles his Nervous Nelly hehehe -- and this coming from Romney The Carpet Bomber, call the Wambulance!

Now, now, Jason. Caesar's lower lip is trembling already and asking him to support his insane ravings with actual facts will cause him to break down completely. You should know by now the only "facts" that matter to the right wing lunatic fringe are the ones they make up extemporaneously to support their wild fantasies.

Festerhawg, As of this date, you have only your insurance company and/or your state to blame for unreasonable rate hikes.

Grants will be awarded beginning in 2010

The law allows states that have, or plan to implement, measures that require insurance companies to justify their premium increases to be eligible for $250 million in new grants. Insurance companies with excessive or unjustified premium increases may not be able to participate in the new Affordable Insurance Exchanges in 2014.

I guess Romney was hoping double air time of dirt on the president would work like in the primaries. Romney was actually slipping because most of the dirt on him was true. Sad that he is decrying what he himself brought to new heights as the republican leader. No one has spent as much on dirty ads in politics in the history of the entire world as Mitt Romney.

Actually, when someone puts a dirty ad out, they should call it doing a Romney.

Unfortunately, the enthusiasm will be short-lived as they learn how destructive and detrimental the Ryan Plan will be for the American people!

Later, in an interview on 60 Minutes, I had to laugh when Ryan said his job is to help Romney WIN the election – LOL! I think he meant to say ‘LOSE” the election . . . in any case it really doesn’t matter – Romney is perfectly capable of losing the election all by himself!

At times like this I wish we had something closer to France's Campaigning laws. Very limited in time and very limiting in terms of expenditure.

It forces the candidates to focus on their platform and not shoot holes in their opponent or smear their name.

Sadly here we allow corporations to hand out $$$ like it's monopoly money and there's no real effort to control the accuracy of the ads either side plaster over tv.

And politicans wonder why we detest them.

"We want to make sure we preserve and protect Medicare," Romney claimed.

By shoving costs onto seniors and doing zip about rising medical costs.

How anyone could approve of Ryan's plan is beyond my meager understanding. Whether you are a conservative or a liberal, or moderates and centrists in between, you cannot possibly endorse a plan that would not only cut social programs, but would destroy the welfare state itself. This plan represents the hard right-wing extremists that were thought to have died when Barry Goldwater was shot down in 1968. We all thought that right-wing extremism had died-we were wrong. For the first time in over a half century, there is a candidate on one of the two major parties advocating for the total elimination of the social safety net, and the annihilation of our nation's commitment to the aid and the protection of our nation's impoverished. The Ryan plan is not a serious deficit-reduction plan, not by a long shot. While most deficit reduction plans offer new revenues or at least strive to be revenue-neutral, the Ryan plan is a massive tax giveaway to the wealthiest Americans, essentially making them our new social and economic leaders. In addition, the Ryan plan increases spending on the military; the one part of the discretionary program that we can afford to cut. Finally, no reasonable deficit-reduction deal would ever in a million years destroy the social safety net. Even Simpson-Bowles (a centrist budget) leaves the safety net alone with moderate changes. And that budget has tax increases!! We are in the election of a lifetime. The last generation; your parents' generation, had to deal with an anti-welfare state radical named Barry Goldwater, who was thankfully trumped by a more moderate Richard Nixon in 1968. Now, this generation must face the same trial, this time with Paul Ryan, who actually has a plan to destroy it. If we elect Romney and Ryan, everybody in this generation can kiss Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the whole damn safety net. We will no longer be the land that helps others in poverty; if you're poor and out of luck, go somewhere else.

Ok, someone explain this to me......why does romney not revealing his taxes translate to a bad thing exactly? I understand the concept of tax fraud, but I'm pretty sure that's what the IRS is for right? And they're pretty darn quick on the uptake, so if they haven't seen something negative from his returns, I don't see what the big deal is.

Also, I gotta say, I really don't like romney all that well. I don't get the feeling from him that he's very strong as far as leadership goes. He did lead a state though, so I guess he gets points for that.

And please, I know the temptation to blame Bush is pretty great, since he's still fresh on everyone's mind, but it's time to move on. Remember, we had 7 good years under him, and granted, the last one was bad enough to counter all the other good ones, so I'm certainly no Bush supporter. But also remember, Obama had two years with a congress all for whatever he wanted, and they didn't get jack done. I'm pretty middle of the aisle, I usually try to go for whoever is the best leader and has the plans to best help America. Like I said before, I'm not keen at all on Romney, but in my mind Obama has failed guys. It's not a partisan thing, I think he's a really nice guy and I also think he really, really helped America's image, but the recession hasn't turned around, except for minor things, so idk, I fell like I gotta lean towards a change of scene. ANd to put the reasoning in simple terms, its for no better reason than that Obama got a chance, and hasn't done much. Romney doesn't look much better, but who knows? There's probably like a .001% chance he fixes stuff up, so idk, I'll give him a shot. Oh, as one last side note, to the heavy partisan people on here, please stop filling up these comment boards with drivel. Believe it or not, but most of you guys saying that the "teapublicans" and the whatever the democrat diss is are petty; you're all petty. I haven't seen one single intelligent comment this far down the board (granted I started skimming after reading a few dumb ones), and you should all stop asking for facts from people when you provide none yourself. I'm guessing most of you follow politics pretty closely; I try to read down here looking for persuasive arguments for either candidate and all there is is trash, a bunch of people squabbling over dumb insults and very biased, partisan comments. I think the comments were pry meant more for people like me who can't decide which candidate is better (or worse) and want to hear some people talk about facts along with positiives AND negatives of one or both. That would be much more productive than petty insults.

Romney's 2010 tax returns - which are the only ones he has released so they must be the least controversial - contained 55 pages detailing his off-shore investments so if you wackos on the right want proof, I think your boy Romney already provided that.

Romney is whining about negative ads by the Democrats. If I recall correctly, Romney sure did fling some crap at his fellow Republicans during the primaries. He can put his hands on his hips and stomp his feet and cry "No Fair" but it just makes him look like a big baby and an even bigger hypocrite.

"If there aren't any skeletons in his closet, make some".

Granny was supposedly thrown over the cliff. Oddly, there's nothing to corroborate the reasons why.

Romney submitted all the SEC forms according to the laws written for a privately held company and was accused of being a felon.

Romney submitted all the FEC forms as required by law. Even though nothing can be learned from his tax returns that aren't in the FEC documents, he is being accused of not paying his taxes. When pressed on the accusation, a surrogate said "it is possible". It is just as possible that Obama's tax returns are fraudulent. It is also just as possible that Obama has a police record, and that he beats his wife. There are a lot more accusations that even sleazy rags wouldn't touch being brought by Obama's surrogates.

Romney is accused of not paying his share of taxes. Don't let the fact that he paid what is required according to our tax laws confuse you.

A recent ad in which a man blames Romney for his wife's death neglected to mention that the man lost his job 2 years after he left Bain. He also neglected to mention that his wife had health insurance until she left her job. And one more point, that she developed cancer and died 7 years after Romney left Bain. Now it's his fault that people he has nothing to do with dies.

When asked about the ad, the campaign mananager said that because of the laws concerning the campaigns and Super PACs, she knew nothing about the ad. Perhaps she was unaware that the same man that made the PAC ad was also paid for another campaign ad done a few months earlier. It must be a coincidence that she hosted a conference call with him and other parties. The same coincidence might explain why the recorded conference call containing the story is floating around in the public cyberspace domain.

The Senate and White House have been spending the time they could be using to create a budget criticizing the (minimum of two: Paul's and Romney's) budget plans that have been presented.

Of course the Obama campaign is running a dirty, sleazy, lying, slanderous campaign. I'm not suggesting that he lower himself to the level of his opponent. But this isn't the playground and simply whining about it will cost him the election.

Concerned, Here's the posibble short comings of your points.
7 good years under Bush? Would that include all the years of overspending and not paying for the wars? Or the tax cuts for the rich? That wasn't all done in the last year of his presidency. I'm not saying all the years were bad, but saying that 7 good years is stretching things a bit. Yes it is time to move on, but we also need to remember the hole we were in is not something that can be erased in just a few years.

You are correct Obama had 2 years of a democrat congress and they could not get much done. Shame about that, but not terribly surprising.

Yes, he has had some leadership experience, but then at least in this election the same can be said of Obama. Whether you agree with what he did or not, he's no longer an inexperienced President. There is also the concern of his plans. Honestly nearly everyone who votes republican is voting against their own financial interests. Then we have sequestration coming which is going to hit the defense department like a ton of bricks. Mainly because they have gotten too used to overspending on things and the defense industry is far too powerful. Now we can bet the Republicans will blame that on Obama, but it was their lack of compromise on a budget bill that got sequestration enacted. This could get lots of people laid off. Of course not the owners and CEO's of the company, just the average workers.

I'm no Democrat nor an I a Republican, but I have to vote for my own financial best interests. If the republicans complain about tax cuts for me, but WANT to give tax cuts to the CEO of my company, I have to vote against them. At least until I become a CEO.

It's hilarious when the Repugnicans show their ultimate stupidity by believing that real middle class American independents are willing to believe that Faux news tells the truth based on fact. Romney wouldn't know the truth if it hit him in the face just like all Faux news dolts that can't handle the truth.

Ever since the ugly Australian was recruited by Donald Regan and Roger Ailes to teach right wing broadcasters how to twist outright lies into propaganda designed to inflame hate and discontent among our nation's working poor.

Turd blossom used the same tactics to get the A$$hole and his dick, Darth Cheney elected for two terms that flushed our once great nation into the $hit hole caused in entirety by the criminals of Wall Street, Big Biz and the worst Congress (tea baggers) big $ could buy.

Reversing the damages done by the Bush cabal and Tea bag Congress over the last ten years will take fifty years of Democratic government. The once proud GOP no longer deserves to be called the party of Abe, Teddy and Ike that cared about all Americans regardless of race, color or creed.

The 1% and their lackeys that include racists, birthers, warmongers would call Dummy Dutch Reagan a socialist if they knew all the issues that he actually supported could care less about others. Ryan's budget is proof that the Repugnicans have been planning their "Starve the Beast" drive for the last thirty years. They have duped the low intellect Americans to vote against their own interests for years.

Here's to never allowing them to rule again until they come back to reality.

Obama/Biden and every Democratic candidate for House & Senate 2012.

We must regain absolute control of both houses to allow Barack and Joe to finish what they started without the interference from the party of NO.

First, we overturn Citizens United and, then, restore the Fairness Doctrine that will require Fatso Limpballs and any other broadcaster to provide both sides of controversial issues. Since Fatso and the rest of the reich wing slugs on the air are too cowardly to actually debate on the air, they'll crawl back under the rocks that hid them for 30 years.

They will tell their base that something they did wrong was actually done by the Democrats (even if video evidence suggests otherwise) AND THE BASE WILL BELIEVE THEM! I mean, bravo Republicans. Bravo.

It's real hard to take ANY of you libs serious when you except far FAR more from Romney than you ever did from obama. If you can't admit the faults of your own side, then you have nothing useful to say.

Except? You post only makes sense if I change except to expect. I expect Romney to tell the truth as O'bama has. I expect him to explain in detail why he is better than O'Bama. Until he does that then there is NO chance of me even thinking about voting for him.

For the record I am a center left Lincoln Republican, not some R.I.N.O who thinks the southern democratic strategy the GOP has absorbed passes for being a true Republican. Anyone not in line with what Lincoln believed is a R.I.N.O. and that includes most of the elected GOP.

Freshieee -- Agreed about reminding folks of the Goldwater era -- though a better comparison is the Gilded Age of the Robber Barons. And look at conspiracy theories like the John Birch Society, even they are back at it.

If Romney/Ryan are soundly defeated, the far-Right will be sidelined to simmer in their juices for awhile. And that's what the far-Right does, simmer in their juices rather than think maybe they are too extreme. All that sane Americans can do is constantly fight to keep this crap contained.

It is high time to have the debate we are having about the role of government, and the 1% versus the middle class, and FAIRNESS in our society. We are on the verge of becoming an Oligarchy, and all good Americans need to fight for their rights and our constitutional democracy.

Say NO to the Robber Barons!

Romney is correct. The campaign by Team Obama is truly pathetic.

I guess Obama will dust off that ad of Ryan pushing grandma over the cliff in her wheelchair. That one was a hoot, a real knee-slapper, for deranged liberals. That will book-end nicely with the more recent one about Romney letting the woman die from cancer.

There is an exceptional quality of dirt coming from Team Obama. His Chicago crew led by Axelfraud has been working overtime developing their smears. But it's nothing new for them, they've done it for most every election Obama has run. It's odd though that the media is slow to be critical of the tactics used by Obama. Why is that when they seem to be all over other candidates when they step over the line?

Joanna, go back to your trailer. It seems that a Rightie can't type a paragraph without it being full of hate. Ryan does want to destroy our safety nets, all of them, as they stand. If you knew anything about the Tea Party, they hate social safety nets and love tax cuts tilted toward the wealthy. They really don't like government intrusion.

Ah, so silly! :) Romney gets called out for stating complete falsehoods about what Obama did with the work for welfare stuff, and being Romney, he just yelled his bad info louder. He's either lying outright (and badly since anyone who looks at the news--real news, not Fox News Republican talking points--knows they're lies), or he's a colossal idiot for having no understanding of what the change actually does.

So, JoAnna, which one would be the one to make him qualified for president in your eyes? Blatant lies, or utter idiocy?

Is it fair to ask how Romney grew a simple little IRA account to 20 million dollars?

Yes, I believe it is fair, because the Tea Party is all about demanding that seniors pay for their own healthcare, while allowing the wealthiest to manipulate tax rules to create a fortune for themselves. And how did Ryan become a multi-millionaire during his career as a public servant for 15 years? Did he use unsider information he acquired while in office to grow his own investments, as a story on 60 Minutes uncovered is legal and common among Congresspeople?

Still seeking sanity is a leftwing loon. She seems to believe as most liberals do that a congressman that becomes vice-president can magically turn his proposal into law. It will just pass if Romney gets elected. There will be no debate, no votes in the house or senate, no competing proposals, it will just pass. Of course if the Democrats actually offered a solution to saving Medicare, it would be their first.

Then maybe they could maintain some momentum and actually pass a budget. Move onto Social Security and then tax reform. All issues the Democrats have been talking about solving for decades, but never seem to offer any proposals to do so. The Democrats have even killed every attempt at a balanced budget amendment, and they pretend to be the responsible party? Talk is cheap, and the Democratic Party is all talk.

But fortunately for you, you don't need to think, you can just rest easy knowing he said it's true. Well it's always nice to have evidence for the old saw "ignorance is bliss"....

And for "anything illegal", you haven't noticed how many people defraud the IRS on a regular basis? But either way, if he did nothing, and I mean NOTHING illegal, don't you think it would be simple just to show the world and prove it?

Well Stephen, maybe the Republicans will follow the lead set by Obama and just ignore the law and insert a new directive. Although Obama did have both the house and senate under Democrat control when he took office and still got nothing done. So maybe Romney is planning on trying something Obama never did, and inviting both sides to sit down and solve some problems. Obama just kicked the Republicans to the back of the bus and then nothing got done, whoops. Dumb move for someone that ran on uniting the country and changing the way Washington worked.

You mean like sitting down with Boehner and Cantor and having positive discussions that they then spat on as soon as they realized the lunatic fringe right branch would explode if they did something as radical as work with the president to solve problems? Yeah that would be original.

And I assume you mean follow Bush's lead by issuing all those signing statements stating that he had the authority to disregard statutes enacted by Congress: "George W. Bush has added more than 800 “signing statements” to new laws since he took office. Earlier presidents occasionally appended such comments to new statutes, but Bush is the first to use signing statements routinely to nullify key provisions of new laws"

Funny how Romney & Ryan say reducing future Medicare spending by $700 Billion (over 10 years) in Obamacare is "robbery", given the RYAN BUDGET (which Romney has endorsed) INCLUDES THAT SAME, IDENTICAL $700 BILLION in "cuts".

Obamacare uses those $700 Billion in savings to provide health care to 30 million Americans who currently don't have health insurance.

The Ryan/Romney budget uses those SAME $700 Billion in savings to fund tax cuts for the rich.

Which is a better use of the $700 Billion in savings?
-- Provide health insurance for millions of uninsured (then Vote for Obama)
-- Tax Cuts for millionaires (then Vote for Romney)

This is just one example of HOW REPUBLICANS LIE!!!

          WCA -

Mitt Romney has a complex system of tax avoidance strategies that "push the envelope" of legality, including his own Cayman Island investment corporation.

There are a few ways he could have built his IRA to that level, all of them probably legal but definitely "risky".

Romney can get away with things that most of us can't - he can afford tax attorneys that know the IRS regulations better than the IRS.

Let's see, making $180,000 taxes take about 40% ($72,000), live off $50,000, leaved $58,000 per year to invest. Invested at an average return of 7% (low) leaves you a few thousand less than $20,000,000 in 20 years.

I have a family of 4 and our income has been $60,000 for the last 3 years. If we had no other debt than a modest $1,000 per month mortgage, we can live just fine with the $48,000 left over from after taxes.

Now, if the Federal Government wasn't the real loan officer, banks would be approving many more business loans, & our income would then return to over $80,000 per year. Then there would be a lot less deficits too don't you think?

I'm sorry white collar but I just can't quite grasp what point you're trying to make. You're suggesting people should view the vague terms of "hope" and "change" from Obama's campaign with the same scrutiny and skepticism that they look at Romney's extreme fringe tax shelters and financial tricks he presumably made use of to somehow amass an IRA nobody else on earth could have accomplished? You know that makes no sense, right?

And "how many people running for president of the United States get away with defrauding the IRS"? Again what do the two things have to do with one another? Are you suggesting that everyone who defrauds the IRS is running for president? Or the IRS automatically audits or reexamines the tax files of everyone running for president? Or... I don't even know, you just don't make sense. I stated that tons of people defraud the IRS. Clearly if anyone had the know-how to push the envelope to barely legal fiscal strategies it's Romney...

But yeah I'm going to guess yes I think a lot more about what I post than you do. Thanks for asking.

David, I agree, however, it does go to the heart of the fact the Republicans demonize the poor, while manipulating the system, using tools that are not available to middleclass investors, to benefit themselves.

                and then, there is this:

Republican Vice Presidential Pick Paul Ryan sold shares in a number of financial companies including Citigroup, General Electric, Wachovia, and JP Morgan Chase on the same day as then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke held a closed meeting with congressional leaders during the financial crisis.

At issue are the sale of troubled banks like Wachovia and Citi, as well as General Electric's struggling capital unit, dated on September 18, 2008 — the same day as the meeting with Bernanke and Paulson according to the Associated Press.

There would be a lot more coming out about Obama, if he wasn't able to keep everything sealed or shielded behind executive privilege. But liberals don't care about anything that goes on in their own party, just that side of the isle over there.

When congress has to pass a pretend law about insider trading, that is all for show and stops nothing, you can take to the bank vast majority in Washington is doing it. It would be like passing a law that says a tax cheat cannot be the secretary of the treasury, unless he is sorry he cheated. For every one door Washington closes, dozens more are opened.

Caligula, the most recent item was Romeny saying that Obama was doing away with the welfare item that calls for people wishing to stay on welfare that they have to be looking for a job. That is still in place and not going away. Of course, you as a republican will dispute that as you think all republicans are lily white and never lies.

Including you, the news media, the republicans who might blow the secret, etc? But you are sure of those bad things? And you accuse the liberals of making stuff up? Seriously? At least we're very specific about our criticisms, so if we are making the stuff up, you can dispute it with facts, right? But if it is secret, well then, how can we dispute that?

Obama can NOT run on his sorry record!!

[I]f you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from." That is what Barack Obama said when he accepted his party's presidential nomination in 2008. Four years later, it reads like a prophetic description of his re-election campaign.

"Insider Trading"? Isn't that what Martha Stewart was jailed for? So, if your family is friends with a family that was "instrumental" in 9/11, and then under a facade of retaliation, you take your country to war in the wrong direction, meaning, the wrong country--while playing the "I am Strong" card as you and your buddies reap in monetary gains from Halliburton and 'everywhere, from anyone" I want. Isn't that kinda like an "Insider" deal? Where only those "In the Know"...know about?

Like when Hallibuton (former Vice President and former CEO) Cheney's company bought an Oil Clean Up Company 8 days before the BP Gulf Oil Spill in 2010. (Watch the "Oil, Smoke and Mirrors" documentary.

Insider trading, insider tips, same, same...all equals money. That's the name of the game in business, right? Make money? Money is the root of ALL evil.

                Big Business = Big Money = Romney/Ryan = Ruin.

Dirt? Distortion? Deception? Dishonesty = "Romoney" and Ryan "Med-i-care-less." Together they are a team that wrote the book on deception. It's a best seller coming to a platform near you.

                Feisty Redhead Roselle, ILRestored

This is PRICELESS coming from the campaign who refuses to talk about ANYTHING!

Time for Team Willard to pull up their big girl/boy panties and STOP the incessant whining!

No, actually your comment is what's priceless, while also being representative of the typical inherent comment of an inbred voter and liberal hypocrite (oh but I repeat myself).

What's even better is the fact that the one time presidential candidate who campaigned in 2008 on the idea of HOPE & CHANGE, and things like Job Creation and Putiting America back to work, hasn't got a HOPE nor a PRAYER of propelling his now 3 year old re-election campaign based on accomplishments..... that's because there aren't any, with the 1 single exception of the extermination of Osama Ben Laden, which was only accomplished because of the personal assassins, (as Obama once refered to Seal Team 6) assembled specifically by Bush and Cheney.

So what's Obama got left, Nothing... absolutely nothing. Hence the good ole fashion Attack, Smear and Run tactics of a desperate politician. That's the HOPE for CHANGE you vote for... actually, someone like you would have voted for anything wearing the Jackass symbol. Team Socialist is over, you know it, and Obama knows it all to well,... never forget the historic Nov. 2010 election results. America spoke 2 years ago, and now Nov. 2012 is almost upon us. I wonder how many presidential pardon's Obama will be issuing during his final days. Wonder if he'll let his old buddy Rod Biglogof@!$%# get a free walk. Will be interesting to see how many rats/friends he'll be giving a get-out-of-jail-free card to.

So listen up girly, the clock is ticking, and Ayers' puppet boyz time will soon coming to an end. Pray like hell that the stars don't get aligned for Team Willard, during his rein, because bye bye Obamacare... if it was so great, why didn't the jackasses that voted for it, also accept it for themselves. If that doesn't tell you how much worse it is than our current system, nothing will, which is to be expected with an inbred voter.

The MIRICAL MAN's time is up,

                      from the article above:

"It’s smear. It’s dirt. It’s distortion. It’s deception. it’s dishonesty. It diminishes the-- it diminishes the office of the presidency itself."

Karl Rove is the most recent master of smear, distortion, and dishonesty. Thanks to Rupert Murdoch and News Corporation, they have perfected deceiving the American Public for over 25 years now.

But the Republican media has a long history of smear tactics and vile hatred towards everything and anything Democratic or Democrat values.

Who of you remember these names?

Les Crane , Joe Pyne, Wally George, Morton Downey Jr., Rush Limbaugh, Lee Atwater, Shawn Hannity, and Roger Ailes. The list goes on with the current stock of 'shock jocks', only now the airwaves are filled with Republican propaganda.

And Governor Romney has the gall to accuse President Obama of smear tactics.

                      Salud

What is it about the name "Bob" that almost all are idiotic, ignorant witless posters. Between y'all there is barely a functioning brain and when it does work (barely) it cannot separate fact from fiction or to put it more bluntly truth from lies, must be all that right wing drivel and propaganda they get from bellicose Fox, Limbaugh, Hannity et al.

They prefer to believe all this drivel as it suits their mindset or their conspiracy theories. Hate is a destructive emotion.

Liberals are going to vote for Obama not for what he has done, said he would do, or promised he would do. Obama calls himself a liberal, and that is all it takes to get the liberal vote. It really is no more difficult then that to understand. Until liberals decide to hold their party accountable don't expect much to get done in Washington. So far no one in the Democratic Party has even put forth a proposal to solve anything, but they do relish the chance to attack those that have. Talk is cheap, and the Democratic Party is all talk.

Rick - Republicans and far righters will vote for Romney and Ryan strictly because the are the ones on the GOP ticket - no other reason. Many will not look into their records or know anything about them. They will do what they are told by their leaders - not realizing the GOP could care less about the middle class.

The Democrats, Independents - you know, liberals - will do research and decide which slate is best for the country. And, that's not too difficult. The GOP slate will destroy the middle class while the Democratic slate will help to improve the lives of everyone.

Rick & Bob, et. al.: I would gladly vote for a viable alternative to President Obama, unfortunately, the Republican Party has not produced one. Instead, they are putting forth Willard Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as their standard bearers.

The thoughts put forth by this gruesome twosome are more of the same policies intent on destroying the poor and middle class while enhancing the fortunes of the wealthy which have not worked. Cutting taxes for the rich and cutting aid to the poor while the middle class gets slammed does not improve the economy.

It will not help to cut $2.5trillion from Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps and student loans if you give $3trillion to millionaires and billionaires. Contrary to popular belief, tax cuts for the wealthy do not lead to more jobs. In fact, if you follow history, just the opposite is true. The greatest period of job creation has coincided with the highest levels of top marginal corporate and personal taxes.

Perhaps it is time to get rid of the subchapter C & S and LLC differentiations and just tax all companies the same. Also, get rid of "carried interest," captital gains and other methods of cheating the government and tax everything the same, and have all individual income subject to SS and Medicare tax. That alone would make both SS and Medicare solvent.

Come this fall all theses attempts by the Obama campaign to distract voters with meaningless drivel will come to an end. Obama will be facing his lack of record everyday on every channel when the Romney/Ryan campaign takes it to the president. Hype and blame will not carry Obama through the fall campaign, he has nothing of substance to offer and voters know we cannot risk four more years on a do nothing president. Talk is cheap, and all Obama can offer is talk.

What else are they going to do, Rick, run on his record? Please.

They tried getting him "off prompter", so he didn't look like one of those bobble head dolls- right, left;right, left;- and, also, so he could "connect" with people. That led to "you didn't build that",. It also led to this

                        From NBC's Cosmic Log

"If in fact you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away," Obama said during the call, which was placed from Air Force One to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "I've got a lot of things on my plate, but I expect that that will go to the top of the list. Even if they're just microbes, it will be pretty exciting."
Obama also said he was impressed by the attention that's been paid to flight director Bobak Ferdowsi, the "Mohawk Guy" whose star-spangled haircut and warmhearted demeanor during Curiosity's Aug. 5 landing won him Internet fame.

"I, in the past, thought about getting a Mohawk myself," Obama joked. "But my team keeps on discouraging me. And now that he's received marriage proposals and thousands of new Twitter followers, I think I'm going to go back to my team and see if it makes sense."

THIS is the "smartest guy in the room"?

I don't know what's worse- that there was, ever, anybody who thought this idiot was even vaguely capable of actually being president- or that there are still some who, despite all evidence to the contrary, still do.

Why should Romney release more tax returns? And why should he not have a swiss bank account, or money in the cayman's ? Have you checked to see how many Rich Liberals have accounts there? Stop repeating the Liberal talking points and do some thinking on your own, but that would probably be to much to ask, it's easier to live off your neighbors hard work

What a great guy Obama is...letting everyone know that Mitt has killed people. What a joke his clean campaign is.

                            Six degrees of separation

                            From the article above.

Mitt Romney returned to the campaign trail in this critical swing state Monday morning without his new running mate, but armed with new rhetoric accusing President Obama of running a dishonest campaign meant to deceive the American people.

                            Here’s how it works.

                            1. Citizens United makes it possible for Corporations to donate undisclosed amounts of money to Super-PACs.
                            2. Super-PACs take the money to advertising companies.
                            3. Advertising companies make dishonest campaign commercials and purchase time on Media outlets.
                            4. Media outlets gladly take the money because they are corporations.
                            5. “Corporations are People, My Friends”. Says Governor Romney.
                            6. Governor Romney accuses President Obama of running a dishonest campaign.

                            Salud.

Romney asked Ryan for "several years" of tax returns in order to vet him, but will only offer the American voters two years of his own returns - what does that tell you?

Nice lie Amy, I saw it on TV this weekend he said he gave Romney 2 years.

It tells us you are merely trying to distort the truth.

Where's Obama's budget Amy ? Does he have a budget ... as REQUIRED BY LAW ?

Actually Bob, the Senate could pass a budget resolution, but without the cooperation of the HOUSE or 60 votes, that resolution would not take effect, it would be an empty gesture, though the Senate HAVE passed budgets to keep the Government running.

Ummm Jim, President Obama's never had 'any' budgets?

enacting the $814 billion stimulus WAS part and parcel to the budget

the $3.7 trillion 2011 budget President Obama unveiled the administration estimated reductions to federal spending deficits by $1.1 trillion over the next decade if adopted and economic assumptions were fully achieved.

President Obama's 2013 $3.8 trillion budget, Republicans called it a nonstarter and dead on arrival, because of raising taxes on the rich.

jim......145 ..... Read Amy's post again. He gave the Romney campaign...several years as requested, the campaign choose to release TWO wouldn't want to put out more than Romney has offered. Any campaign worth its salt (not that the GOP is) but let's call it insurance, wants to make sure there are no surprises in the life of a possible candidate.

Romney and crew should know that's why he wont show the American people more years of his, and that's why McCain went with Sarah Palin after looking at 22 years of Romney's.

Jim...depending what channel you watch especially Fox, if you want to know the real story, google and research...that is if your interested in the truth dont take anything for granted.

United States Code established the statutory basis for an executive budget process through the"The Budget and Accounting Act of 1921"

The President is required to submit to Congress annually a proposed budget for the federal government.

It also created the Bureau of the Budget (reorganized as the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in 1970) to assist him in carrying out his responsibilities, and the General Accounting Office (GAO) to assist Congress as the principal auditing agency of the federal government.

                            (source: http :// fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/34649.pdf)

The President's FY 2013 budget can be found at http ://www .whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2013/assets/budget.pdf

I know that if you actually look, you can find the other budgets on the whitehouse.gov website.

Now regarding Rep. Ryan's tax returns released to Gov. Romney:

"It was a very exhaustive vetting process,” Ryan said when asked about the tax issue in a joint interview with Romney on the CBS program “60 Minutes” that aired last night. “There were several years” of returns that he turned over, he said.

“But I’m going to release the -- the same amount of years that Governor Romney has” for public review, he added."

(source [among others]: http ://www .bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-12/ryan-says-he-released-several-years-of-taxes-to-romney-camp.html

Now please apologize to Amy for calling her a liar.

There are some things about Romney I don't like. There is nothing at all about Obama that I do like. Guess who I'm voting for?

No, what we've got here is someone who can't read the post that said there were 110,000 million people on welfare. It's sad really, that you don't even understand the post you're insulting, or the post it was pointing out as being seriously mistaken.

That's called hatred. It is an illness that has seriously infected a part of America. Hatred more than anything is damaging this country. If we could sit down at a table and have a logical discussion positive things might actually. But hatred tends to be intractable and does not permit such things. And of course you would claim the same of your opponents. It's just become a big circle of name calling and slander. And that's all Romney is doing here. Gee, what a surprise! It's also awaste of time as it changes no ones mind.

I truly like this President and I see a lot of my own traits in him. As the son of two college professors I know far to well how people react to real intellect. It is after all something money can't buy and no miracle drug can provide as a remedy. Better to call those like Obama stupid or evil and point out the relatively few verbal mistakes they have made. I suppose that makes some feel good, maybe even superior. And then you can say they said the same about Bush. As if that makes it all OK.

I also do not think much of America is mature enough for a minority President. And living in the South nearly all of my life I believe it will be several more generations (75 years perhaps?)before the hate that plagues those like this president softens. And that will only be when those who are now in majority become the minority.

vox - well said and absolutely right on target. I grew up in NC and was so pleased to see it go for Obama in the last election. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it does so again in November.

There are a lot of smart people there who I hope will outnumber the crazies who are afraid of our President because of the way he looks and the fact that he has a different name. And, you're right, smart people scare some people.

If they look at the choices, they know he's one hundred times better than what the GOP is offering!

110,000 million is 110 BILLION. Thats more people than have ever lived and died in this planets history. Kinda hard to believe that the entire historical population of this planet (plus a few others) is on welfare.

The polls show that 54% of the people that said the primary reason for voting for Romney are doing it out of spite for Obama, and only 34% think he would be better. Doesn't sound like a very good reason.

If and when the GOP Congress is willing to give me the same benefits that they have (Ryan's fair share congressional plan is indexed to the Health Care Inflation Index) while the "medicare voucher or premium support plan) is indexed to the Consumer Price Index.... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the CPI has been going up 1% to 2% per year while the Medical Inflation Index has been going up 5% to 8% per year... if your plan is "so good Ryan" then please make it apply to yourself also... "I didn't think so"....

The Republicans have been preaching a theology of negativity since they lost the White House in 2008. I don't know about you, but I am pretty tired of their running down everything American - heck, Romney couldn't even compliment the British on their prepartions for the Olympics. He had to find something to pessimistic to say.

Economists tell us a big part of an economic recovery is psychological, and depends on increasing consumer confidence, yet all Republicans have done is spread gloom and doom - it's almost like they want the recovery to stall.

bob - your stupidity is showing. President Obama voted "present" no more than any other Senator - and less than most! And, idiot, he's as much of an US Citizen as anyone in this country who was born here!

Now I have heard everything, the economy is psychological. So all those small business closures are nothing but a figment of our imagination.

Do you really think that our IRS Tim the cheat would not have already thrown the book at Romney if he had done anything illegal? Please give me a brake, and let's talk about the economy and the ideology of Obama.

Have we notice how the usual 6 to 8 extreme liberal on this post get when they are wounded by the news?

In other words, Obama is highlighting a serious problem. Perhaps the phrase “lazy” is a bit overheated, but it clear from the context of Obama’s remarks that he is not saying Americans are lazy. He’s talking about a trend over a two-decade period that indicates a certain complacency in trying to win business and investment.

Here is a fact for you. Today, under President Obama leadership each American shares $50,832.01 of the U.S. debt. By the time we have a winner in the next Presidential election each American will share >$51,897.08 in U.S. debt and climbing, especially if we have another 4 years under President Obama.

Ryan; intergal part of the financial mess of the Bush administration.....why in the heck would America elect this man VP???? They won't!

Paul Ryan have sat on the Congressional Finance's Committee for years now.

Ryan was the point man for every piece of legislation G.W. Bush passed in his 8 years in office.

He helped Bush pass a 800 Billion Plan D Medical drug bill that wasn't added to the budget .

Ryan also help fixed it where Bush didn't have to add his trillion dollar private war in Iraq to the federal Budget .

Ryan say he needs to save the USA from Obama when Ryan have been part of this country deficit problem for over 13 years now.

Oh, but wait! It's the "unrelated" third-party ads that are doing all of the GOP smear, not the "candidate(s)"!! Sure, but of course an intelligent voter knows that it is those super-rich who are paying for all of those ads and also control the candidate. That is why every one of you should have been a part of the Popular Amendment Movement for the past two years, helping to push through the two proposed Constitutional Amendments for Election/Campaign Finance Reform and Term Limits posted at www.faircampaignreform.us. For those too lazy to go to the site, here they are...just cut and paste, then print them out, email them to all of your friends, family, etc., and get a local grassroots movement going to get these petitions signed and turned into your Secretary of State. MAYBE we can bring about true election/campaign finance reform before the NEXT federal elections in 2014 and 2016.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

                                  6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
                                  7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
                                  8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.

Four years later, it reads like a prophetic description of his re-election campaign.

border Joe, if your source is the Washington examiner, a rag by any stretch of the imagination, anything you say is completely irrelevant. QED.

BTW, the examiner is given away free to any and all who would take it, makes a great cat box liner.
