Subscribe to RSSMooresville, N.C. -- On their second full day of campaigning together, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are taking advantage of enormous crowds and an intense media spotlight to help reshape their public images, and to defend one another's personal biographies, with a particular focus on shoring up perceived weaknesses.
Romney, speaking last, praised Ryan's work in Congress, where he has spent the last seven terms representing Wisconsin's First District, but pitched to a crowd of nearly 2,000 that Ryan had gone to Washington at the expense of his career, rather than as a career.
"His career ambition was not to go to Washington. That is not what he wanted to do, but he became concerned about what was happening in the country and wanted to get America back on track and so he put aside the plans he had for his career and said I'm going to go and serve, and he's done that and he's put the country and policies to get America right again ahead of ambition," Romney told the crowd at a NASCAR technical facility here.
But that interpretation of Ryan's career clashes with his actual biography. After graduating with a degree in economics and political science, Ryan moved to Washington to work as a congressional staffer, having already become familiar with campaigns as a volunteer for Ohio congressman John Boehner, now House speaker. Ryan returned the private sector and Wisconsin only briefly, before being elected to Congress at age 28.

Ryan's career in the public sector has been seen by some political analysts as a potential liability on the Romney ticket, where executive competence and a Washington-outsider persona have long been the hallmarks of the campaign. Yesterday, Ryan suggested his legislative skills could help Romney in governing more than they might hurt the brand in campaigning.
“I believe that my record of getting things done in Congress will be a very helpful complement to Governor Romney’s executive and private sector success outside of Washington,” Ryan said in Norfolk.
Ryan also returned the favor for Romney today, burnishing the GOP nominee's biography, including his tenure as head of the 2002 Olympics, and as Massachusetts governor, an oft-overlooked period for a candidate who prefers to focus on his business experience.
"His country asked him to move to Salt Lake, to turn it around and save the Olympics, he did it and we're so proud of that moment," Ryan said. "The contrast could not be more clear. When he was governor of Massachusetts, he balanced the budget without raising taxes. President Obama has given us budgets with no balance ever and a lot of new taxes."
The setting at NASCAR's technical institute was designed to let another bit of Romney's personal biography and personality peek out: he's a car guy, and the Romney logo-emblazoned stock car behind him was too good to resist.
"You see as a boy my dad made Ramblers, alright? And I only dreamed of cars like that," Romney said, eyeing the car. "To have my name on a car like that it's just too much."
"It must have been tough for my girlfriend to be able to go out on that first date with me in that red rambler we had," Romney said, introducing his wife Ann, who spoke on stage for the first time since the Ryan announcement.
For the Romney campaign, today's event in which thousands of supporters overflowed into parking lots outside, is expected to be the smallest of three major rallies here, and in Wisconsin.
Most of the energy at the event came from seeing the ticket for the first time, but some, surely, came from stock car driver Darrell Waltrip who, pacing the stage in the pre-program, offered advice for Romney seemingly ripped from the Will Ferrell movie "Talladega Nights," and got the crowd cheering uproariously.
"I have a little advice for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan: Boogity Boogity Boogity!"

I support replacing the income tax with some sort of a Consumption tax. That's the only way to force the rich to pay their fair share. No more loopholes! You want a jet? Fine, buy it, and pay $1 million tax on it. You want a bottle of cheap booze? Fine, buy it, and pay $1 tax on it.
Plus, you get rid of the IRS - a bureaucracy that costs us $12 billion a year. You save billions of hours of unproductive time that taxpayers and businesses spend on IRS paperwork each year. Additionally, a person won't be able to be paid “under the table” and not pay taxes. Even drug dealers will have to pay their fair share.
Ryan has always supported replacing the income tax with a consumption tax. For that reason, and many others, the Romney/Ryan ticket has my vote!
The Top 10 Poorest States in the U.S. are Republican States. Do you ever hear the Republicans talk about the Poor or Poverty in those States? The answer is “Never”. It just so happens most of those States are in the South and have “Right To Work Laws”. How’s that working out for ya?
And here is da Real Kicker: All those Republican Politicians in those States have Good Salaries, Health Care, Pension, Vacations, and all kinds of Special Perks……paid for by our “Tax $$$$”. Hmmmmm.
The most impoverished state is Mississippi, and it's followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, Montana, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and North Carolina.

Florida is the sine qua non for the Romney campaign. That ship just sailed on the "Save Our Medicare" Cruise Line. Barack And Michelle will be sipping champagne by 8:45 in the evening on election night. Don't have a stroke Daniel Streibig. Ryan will have a chance to lose even bigger on the top of the ticket in a few years.
Is it just me, or is this ticket not only white, but Wonder Bread white? I bet they have to buy mayonnaise by the barrel for the Romney campaign. It looks like they also like the extra neat wet look - hair gel must be supplied by the barrel as well.
God forbid one of their staffers be caught with a condom. They would probably lose their Johnson. Women staffers are probably allowed to walk barefoot if pregnant.

He voted to defund federal family planning programs, authored a budget that dismantles Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare, all of which disproportionately aid and employ women, and voted multiple times to prevent women in the military from using their own money to pay for abortions at military hospitals.
Ryan also supported a highly controversial bill that Democrats nicknamed the "Let Women Die Act," which would have allowed hospitals to refuse to provide a woman emergency abortion care, even if her life is on the line.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund said in a statement on Saturday morning that Ryan has earned zero percent on its women's health voting scorecard, and other women's rights group expressed similar alarm.

This president is a godsend to conservatives. If Hillary had been elected, she'd have "compromised" us into gradually pushing more socialism forward. Using the ubiquitous "the children", "the poor", the "unerprivileged" to leverage more and more concessions. Adding more taxes here and there... not in a half trillion dollar mass, but a few tens of billions at a time. Adding more regulation here and there... not shutting down half of our electrical generation... just adding more restrictions and higher fuel stds gradually. Much like the frog in the water... heat it gradually, and by the time we're aware we're cooked... But Obama showed us the Socialist/Marxist end game. Demonize success, and punish it. Put forth an inverted value system where collecting alms is noble, and working just lines you up for the tax collector. Govt control and intrusion into every aspect of your life. Robbery in the name of "social justice" and "fairness". Obama showed us the man behind the curtain. He showed us the un-American values and lack of ethics, and utter lack of competence that only an Affirmative Action fast tracker can have. And now the wave is coming.
