Paul Ryan's strengths and weaknesses

i've just got to say a few things here. to retiredcoastguard: i'll tell you why privatizing social security is a weakness...because that is OUR money!!!! WE earned that money and the government has right to do anything with it without our permission and I DON'T WANT MY MONEY GIVEN TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR!!!! social security is NOT an entitlement!!!!!! it is NOT a charity! i have worked hard my entire adult life and paid into social security and only i and the american people have a right to decide what happens to OUR money!!!!! it's bad enough that Bush borrowed from social security to fund his wars and it was never paid back, now ryan wants to turn it over to wall street??? are you kidding me?

truth: social security is NOT bankrupt. it won't start paying out more than it is receiving in until at least 2035 AND that estimation is on the current growth. if you read about social security and read what the financial experts( who are not just out there trying to get a name for themselves by being doomsayers) they have said that with a few changes we can insure that future of social security into the foreseeable future. we don't need to gut it!! that is a right wing lie. PLEASE do some research.

same goes with medicare!!! this is NOT an entitlement! I really hate this whole lying dialogue that was started by the right under Bush( i don't necessarily blame him-i blame the radical right) that somehow medicare and social security are some kind of charitable organizations that we should be down on our knees thanking the government for. all of the monies in both funds were put there by US!!!! working americans! it's OUR money. don't let anyone tell you that it isn't! or that you don't have the right to decide what is to be done with it. medicare could also be fixed...what we need to a healthcare cooperative, run be each individual state, with EVERYONE paying their fair share, so we can all benefit. why, that sounds socialist and not american is beyond me. aren't we all supposed to be brothers in arms? aren't we all supposed to be united one for all? i didn't realize that to be a patriotic american you're supposed to have the ideal of every man for himself and to hell with everyone else. would you let your neighbor die rather than give a penny to save him? if so, you're no american in my book. we need to start changing the dialogue to one of brotherhood in this country, not free enterprise equals democracy. in case you're not educated on that matter, democracy and free enterprise are NOT synonomous (sp). you can have free enterprise in a democracy, but you can't have democracy in a country run solely on free enterprise. you would end up with those who don't have anything would have no word. what do you think is going on right now in this country?

did you read about how much money the political parties are raising? how carl rove is working to outraise obama and he thinks he can buy america? well, how much are you will to sell your vote for? is that what it has come to here? the richer party wins the white house? have we now put our country up for sale to the highest bidder, like the koch brothers? i know the president has raised alot of money, too. unfortunately you have to fight fire with fire, but that doesn't make the whole thing right. most of romney's money is coming from the ubber rich and we should all be scared of that because they are sure as heck not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. they are going to expect payback. i don't know about you, but i'm not ready to live under the iron fist of a bunch of corporate overlords.

ryan is part of that whole lie. he wants to sell out our children and our grandchildren to indentured servitude to the rich and he does it by talking out of the side of his mouth about responsibility, but he's only talking about laying a greater burden on the poor and middle class.

if you think this country is about to reap the wrath of God, i suggest you run for the hills, hide in a cave and put a blanket over your head. maybe he wont' catch you for being the ultimate hypocrite. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." "Do not judge lest ye be judged." you should start living by those statements instead of just giving them lip service. you, unfortunately for you, you live in a country where we have FREEDOM of religion and that also means freedom FROM religious hierarchies who would force us to live our lives based on their backward, archaic ideals and dogmas that were wholly invented by men to keep men in power.

you don't like the idea of abortion, then keep your pants zipped! everybody is so anxious to blame women for getting abortions and ya'll conveniently ignore the fact that these women didn't get pregnant by immaculate conception. there is a guy involved willing to say anything to get his way. and it would probably shock you to know how many of those same men have paid for those abortions. it would be interesting to know how many of our illustrious, conservative, right wing, teaparty legislators have paid to have their girlfriends or some random prostitute's baby aborted.

and if you don't like homosexuality, then don't become one. or maybe you are, and you've been brainwashed into thinking that it's something to be ashamed of. it's funny, we believe God is omnipotent and in control of everything, but if someone is gay, they're a mistake or an abomination. so, if God is perfect and He created the universe and everything in it, he's responsible for gays. but, by your thinking, God made mistakes, he allowed abominations to exist. so, you limit God by putting upon him the human failings of mistakes.

i don't. i believe the universal power that we call God, is perfect and has brought into being a perfect universe, set perfectly for life, all life. and it is up to us to come to understand that in order to live in harmony with the universe, ergo God, we have to learn to accept everything around us with compassion, equality and love. you should really reread the bible without some carpetbagging preacher telling you what it says. and so, do some real praying to God to show you the truth.

Even though I understand what you are saying I would suggest you do something novel and actually read Ryan's bill before you judge. Ryan never stated he wanted the Government to invest your funds into private funds but rather to give you the chance to do this yourself.

Before you scream about Super Pacs you might wish to research how they were started. They were brought to court after the last election by the Public Unions to enable them to form large groups to help donate and run adds to help the candidate of their choice. What happened is the GOP seen what they did and went and beat them at their own game, now they are screaming foul or better yet spreading the myth that most of this money is coming from corporate sponsors (the facts are less then 15% of the money comes from corporations the rest comes from individuals - do some research).

Your opinion on abortion and homosexuality I really actually agree with you. Be what you are and be proud of it, and in regards to abortion it is real easy as a man to be against it, you do not have to carry the child or in some cases raise it (but with this being stated I do believe it is more a matter of not wanting to have to accept consequences for actions more then free choice).

Although as I christian I do understand what you are stating I can not stand up and support it. Like it or not we are a country built upon freedoms and are a secular government. If you look at population statics you will see that the number one growing religion in the U.S. today is not even Christian but rather Islam. If the rate of growth keeps up at the pace it is today then in the next 25 years they will have enough population to be the majority religion in this country. Now under your thinking because today we are a majority christian nation we should live under christian law, then are you also supporting that in 25 years when we are a Muslim nation we should be forced to have our children and grandchildren live under Shariah?

Now do you see the wisdom of keeping matters of faith and government separate. The founders if you look at their writings wanted people of faith to work with the government, but never wanted the government to be in the position of supporting one faith over the other. (This started because at the time when the constitution was written there a very strong push by southern Baptist to make it the State Church. But thankfully the founders in their wisdom found a way to compromise and keep the corruption of the state out of the churches).

Great post - let's take it one step further.

The US government has no money of its own. It is a representative institution. Social Security, Medicare - all are taxes with a promise of return. By calling the return of this money, 'entitlements,' they are using language to imply that this store of value was theirs to begin with and since the extremely wealthy own the politicians, it is really THEIRS to do with as they please.

Our current problems go way deeper than budget. They go deep the core of what the government believes its power to be.

you're right. i did go and try to find the ryan budget plan so i could see what you were talking about. do you know how hard it is to find a recounting of the plan without some slant? geez. anyway, you were right about the social security. it turns out he said that the government would be required to find a way to sustain it IF it became unsustainable. i know, that he talked about people investing their social security in the market and i guess as long as the government leaves that choice to the individual, then so be it, to each his own.

but, i do stand by my medicare and medicaid statements. even people in his own party had problems with it. the truth is the right wants us to believe that medicare is bankrupt and that just isn't true. what we need, i guess is to get more people working. you know, nothing will add money to these programs faster and better than working americans. you have to wonder if that alone would be enough. i mean, i believe in single payer health care, myself. i think it could be done through a cooperative run by each individual state rather than the government. just think, for only $30 person legal american in this country, we could collect over $108 billion in a year! and that's without companies having to pay out health care for their employees. imagine, how much we would have if everyone paid $50 with a ceiling of, i don't know, $200 per family. and if employers paid even half of what they pay today, i really believe we could do it. then we wouldn't need medicare of medicaid because everyone would be covered and everyone would pay. each state could set its own limits on coverage other than the basics, like well care, yearly exams, eye care, dental-all preventive. and of course, all critical and chronic care. but, if we put more emphasis on preventive care, we could reduce spending. and doctors and hospitals could charge less, because they would be guaranteed payment. i'm not an expert, but i think we could make something like that work. obviously singer payer is workable, because it's being done all over the western world. i think the biggest problem here is our ideal of 'free enterprise.' somehow, taking care of each other is considered 'socialist.' what people don't realize is that we have had socialism throughout our history. there is a difference between the socialism of nazi germany and social medicine. i can't help but think the power of the corporations who make money off of the health care industry is what is keeping us from moving ahead. i would ask people to not look at the political but look at your families. what you do if one of your own was sick and you couldn't pay for it? how much do you want your family members to have a healthy future? when you look at your children or grandchildren, don't you believe they deserve the same health care as everyone else? i mean, i can't go so far as saying that the constitution guarantees health as a right, but it was declared in the declaration of independence that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, such as life..." you can't have a reasonable chance at life and happiness if you're too poor to afford healthcare. it doesn't say life for the rich, it says life and that all men are created equal. these are ideals, i understand that, but they are supposed to be american ideals, or am i wrong about that? is brotherhood in this country dead? we give lip service to our soldiers who die for us, but when they return, their needs are greatly ignored. don't believe me? just read about all the suicides of vets in the last few years. i think we have been asking too much from them. you know, this analogy may offend some, but i'll use it anyway. rescue dogs are always allowed to find some of their people alive during training because when they are faced with too much death, they become depressed. we're not dogs, don't get me wrong, but i think the same idea is true here; when you're face with death all around you and you are forced to face it again and again, it can't help but get to you. we need to come home, and we need to give these people a boost. i know this is all off subject. i just had to say it.

This goes to show how insane our political system and society is right now.

Before the mid 1970's If any politician had said that he was going to create jobs or make the economy better by cutting federal spending and slashing SS, Medicare and UI, the members of BOTH political parties would have said he belonged in the looney bin.

And in most places around the country any crowd of americans he spoke in front of would have laughed him off of the podium.

Back then, many people remembered the 1930's and knew we didn't get out of the Great Depression by cutting federal spending or slashing programs like SS or unemployment Insurance, the opposite, we increased federal spending and we CREATED Social Security, UI etc. DURING the Depression and they helped bring us out of it.

But even New Deal spending wasn't enough to wip the Great Depression. It was only after we entered WWII and SPENT EVEN MORE (and the government completely took over the economy) that it ended.

(And by the way, that brief jog upward in the unemployment around 1936-37 shown by the graph was when the FDR administration briefly STOPPED spending and started trying to lower the deficit. They quickly realized their mistake (politicians used to do that) and started spending again and unemployment went down again)

As a result of New Deal but much more WWII spending we had the biggest debt to GDP ratio in our history in 1946 (150%) and right after that two solid decades of economic boom also referred to by economists as the Golden Age of Capitalism.

After WWII ended even business people were panicky and thought we might slip back into depression again without war time spending which is one of the reasons we had the Cold War for the next 3-4 decades. It kept federal spending high.

And don't think I'm just picking on the Republicans here. Obama and the Democrats are really right up there along side the Republicans as deficit hawks, it's just that they are more devious and clever at seeming like they are not. Obama has been cutting federal jobs and he signed an agreement with the Republicans to slash trillions from Federal Spending.

That's why Main Street is still in a Recession while Wall Street, which received and continues to receive massive federal help is soaring (until they swindle themselves and us off of a cliff again, of course, because of DE regulation).

It wasn't until the Nutty Professor (Milton Friedman) came along and started babbling about the imaginary "Free-Market" that we had this descent into madness and our present sad state.

It only takes 30-45 minutes of looking on the internet if you want to find out whats really going on (and what has gone on in the past).

Stop reading about Lindsey Lohan, the newest iPad or looking at internet porn for a few minutes and wise yourself up.

Your job, standard of living and freedoms may depend on it.

I agree with one of the earlier posters - keep your filthy GOP hands off of my medicare and social security pay ins. Privatize, Privatize, Privatize ... and every time we do this, it doubles and triples the costs of the item we privatize.

So now we want to privatize social security and medicare - and give everybody vouchers. Then deregulate everything until the medical companies can raise their prices without any reason other than their profit margins.

This is more Bush - catastrophe management. Create a catastrophe and use it as an excuse to make wholesale changes - that end up screwing the middle class.

But I must respond here to Alessa. While I believe you make a solid statement on the Social Security part of your response -It is OUR money, the US worker's money.. as we are the ones who pay into it!!- ABSOLUTELY! 100% CORRECT! :) But I have to say I cannot fully agree with you on the medicare part. Because in your statement you said it should be "individual state run" (agree) so that each person has to pay in their "fair share." The only way I can agree with ANY people paying THEIR FAIR SHARE is by implementing the FAIR TAX system. I am not sure how many "American" people have actually done their research on this subject, so I will leave that alone, EXCEPT for one FACT: IF the Fair Tax was brought in, then every prostitute, drug dealer, gun runner, LOBBY-ISTS, "Celebrity", or ANYone else for that matter who you do not like (or like me.. would LOVE to see imprisoned for some of the crap they get away with..LOL) scammers, terrorists.. ANYbody profiting from this country and then staying here & buying LUXURIES( Hope yall understand that word.. I didn't say on NECESSITIES.) would pay an equally distributed amount of taxes. I do not want to keep ANYone up that will not help themselves either. I have been on medicaid before (before anyone throws out the "you don't know their struggles" boloney!) Yes, I do understand their struggles. But that is not something we should reward(or AWARD) to folks who abuse it. That is where my compassion ends. You want to take advantage of people willing to pay into those programs to help feed you and your kids, or your kids and your drug habits.. nah. Thanks. Think I'll pass kinda feeling on that one. Get a drug screen (if you aren't hiding anything, then it wouldn't even be an issue). Then let them job place you. You don't make a $100k/yr, and might actually have to have a BUDGET in your house hold & say NO to your children, ya say..?! Hmm, ok. Then go for it. Tell them no. Guess what.. I rebounded from help. Towards the bottom, you began to -like many that claim to know Jesus do- quote WELL known scriptures, and spout off about someone needing to get to know Jesus.. etc. etc.. blah blah.. hoop-la.. look at me.. kinda talk, that gives the rest of us a bad rep with folks. These are the EXACT comments that keep people from WANTING to hear about Jesus and His marvelous works! He made absolutely NO mistakes.. He NEVER sinned. No. Not once. Homosexuals are not a mistake. People have turned their backs on God. THEY are the ones who made the mistake. You cannot believe for a second, that if you do something out of the will of God -which means.. without prayer, without His guidance, and just going and doing whatever FEELS good at the time- that HE is the one that sends these things into your life!?! I know that MY Bible tells me that -- yes, you can have the 'things of this world' & you may even be satisfied for a season. But you 'WILL NOT inherit the Kingdom of Heaven' living in YOUR iniquities either. TRUE repentance means turning from the sins He has already payed the price for, and NOT returning to them. We aren't meant to live 'perfect' as so many say we(christians) think every one should.. (That always gives me a mental question mark as to who they are hearing tell them that..lol..) and believing a man's word over the word of the Christ Himself, who DID walk this earth. Who LIVED in AND overcame the lusts of this Flesh. (For our flesh is nothing, but will go back to the earth in carnal death) Who tells us He wants us to rely on Him. He wants us to leave our burdens with Him. Who KNOWS we aren't perfect. Otherwise, wouldn't that also make His crucifixion in vain? Which is not possible, btw. :) All He wants is for US TO COME humbly to Him, and accept Him. He doesn't say He wouldn't forgive a homosexual that TURNS from the act. But one LIVING in the act, I do not for a second believe that person can testify a TRUE testimony to salvation. Because MY Bible ALSO tells me that HIS children will KNOW, in the moment, what is right and wrong. So YES! I can say that homosexuals ARE an ABOMINATION. And that they were CREATED from the SINS of OUR fleshly iniquities(or sins). For in MY Bible, I CAN BACK IT UP. BUT THEY TOO.. have a chance to repent, TURN FROM THEIR SIN, and accept Jesus as the Messiah. But that also would entail reading of His word, and prayer. Which I think is where many "Christians" have lost the true way and gospel. He IS love. But you MUST seek the truth (not just any old thing that comes out of a man's mouth) and seek Him, and LOVE Him. He doesn't promise us prosperity here on earth. But if His will was being done.. Hmmm. That's a thought. What might be different IF we were living in His will and NOT in our covetous wants?

I would expect Ryan already accepted before the Romney campaign scheduled the announcement for tomorrow, so there doesn't seem to be any chance of him declining.

It is the thundering echo within the bubble. They believe their own propaganda, can't believe that flaunting such an extreme right wing proponent will turn off independents.

Most seniors don't seem to understand that the GOP will kill Mediacare and Social Security if given half a chance, and most GOP candidates can skirt the specifics and talk about "fiscal responsability" and garner the applause of the people that will end up paying with their blood for the cuts in services (while the rich get more refunds and tax cuts). However, Ryan's budget is rather specific, and pinning a "medicare killer" label to him is far too direct.

In case you were not aware, Social Security is a fund which was set up specifically as personal retirement plan managed by the government - Rand did not like Social Security because the money was taken without consent and she thought people should be allowed to choose what happened with their property. Medicare is an insurance fund that people pay into - Rand had the same complaint about Medicare.

Neither of these are "welfare" - which requires no investment (especially now that Obama has eliminated the work requirement). Rand paid into the Social Security retirement fund and paid Medicare premiums...so, what exactly is the problem with her using the insurance she paid for and the retirement account she funded?

The real problem here is that you people have no clue about freedom and you still get to vote.
