In Michigan, Tim Pawlenty remains mum about Romney VP selection

PORTAGE, Mich. -- It's possible that Tim Pawlenty is days from stepping onto a stage before thousands of cheering supporters as Mitt Romney's newly-minted running mate. But you wouldn't know it from his swing through central Michigan on Wednesday, where the former governor appeared at nondescript campaign offices and addressed just dozens of supporters as they snacked on cookies and lemonade.

"Mitt Romney didn't spend his entire life in government," Pawlenty said to a small group of GOP devotees in Jackson. "He knows how to get jobs going."

Who will Mitt Romney pick as his running mate? NBC's Claire Leka reports.

Even after dutifully delivering laugh lines – like calling the president "all foam and no beer" – Pawlenty didn't escape "veep" speculation from his audience, with one supporter in Jackson asking him if he'll return to the state as vice president.

"I've been back to Michigan a fair amount," he demurred. "But as to the vice presidential thing, we'll know soon enough."

Devoid of the camera platforms and elaborate sound systems typically on hand for political celebrities' events, Pawlenty's appearances showed him to be anything but a campaign diva. When the fold-up table he was supposed to sit behind in Portage was in the wrong place, he helped to carry it to a more suitable spot. When a portable microphone in Jackson proved too loud for backers' ears, he ditched it over the complaints of reporters eager to record his every word.

"We don't want them to get the sound!" he joked to the crowd.

The trip, which involved an early morning flight to the Great Lake State and several hours of trekking in an SUV driven by an aide, showed Pawlenty's talents as an approachable and disciplined pol even as national reporters dogged him with questions about the vice presidential selection process.

Is he stopping by Romney's Boston headquarters on his way to his scheduled New Hampshire events this weekend?

"I'm flying into Boston and then traveling immediately up to New Hampshire to start [my] schedule."

Will he be meeting VP selection guru Beth Myers?

"We have a policy, the campaign just doesn't talk about the vice presidential vetting process."

How's the process going?

He rattled off the names of GOP up-and-comers, scattering in other possible Romney running mates including women and minorities breathing new life into the GOP: Susanna Martinez, Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Nikki Haley, Bob McDonnell, Chris Christie, Rob Portman and Paul Ryan.

"And David Petraeus," he added, perhaps a sly nod to a flurry of speculation that surrounded a now-debunked story on the Drudge Report that the CIA director was in the running for the job.

Widely regarded as one of the Romney campaign's most loyal surrogates, Pawlenty insisted Wednesday that there's no job title that motivates his determined campaigning on behalf of a man he once fought against for the GOP nod.

"The objective here isn't about a position or about some title for any of the candidates or the people trying to help. We are trying to get the country back on the right track," he said. "For me that's meant doing things like this as a volunteer where I can go out and speak on Gov. Romney's behalf in places where he can't be."

And many of those places aren't glitzy, politically or economically. In past years, Jackson has suffered a poverty rate twice that of Michigan as a whole. The Kalamazoo area clocked in for an Obama win of 20 points in 2008.

As Pawlenty wrapped up a brief stop at a strip-mall campaign office in Portage, his possible second-in-command competitor Sen. Rob Portman was wrapping up an (albeit smaller) event outside of Mile High Stadium in hotly-contested Colorado.

Still, the former governor of Minnesota has one psychological advantage that possible running mates Portman and Paul Ryan lack -- the experience of going through the lengthy vetting process only to be greeted with a "thanks but no thanks."

"In 2008, I was on some speculators' list as John McCain's selection for VP," he told reporters. "It's an honor to be considered. It's an honor for anyone to be considered, but also it has some deja vu qualities since I've been through it before."

    Soupy,

Really? We're gonna play that game? First, you, like jsmith, need to lean how to reply within a single thread. Second, I am a small business owner. I own a small mattress store. I've worked very hard for 14 years in the mattress industry to get where I am today.

You clearly, just like jsmith, are a bad person, who just doesn't give a f*ck about your fellow American. Probably a "Christian" as well. Pathetic.

    jsmith12 and Soupy,

I'll be honest, you're starting to bore me. You are the lowest form of filth this planet has, hardly worth my time or effort. You are horrible human beings and even worse Americans. Making you look like ignorant fools is semi-entertaining, however, unnecessary, as you seem to do a good job of it on your own. When I tell you to shut the f*ck up, I offer this advice along with the suggestion; A wise man once said "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove that assessment correct."

You see, I am smarter than you and a better person than you. As your intellectual superior, I suggest that the both of you give up before it gets much more embarrassing for you. Intellectually speaking, the both of you are bringing rubber knives to a nuclear missile fight. You have been marginalized and, you are dismissed. Good bye. Your ignorance and stupidity will never grace my computer screen again. Ignore.

Every 7 years all debt should be forgiven and wiped away.

Except in George W. Bush's term, after 7 years he heaped a whole load of debt on us and our children and children's children.

Who the hell was the fool who said, "Just let George do it!" (That would be the Republicans.)

He really did it, didn't he?

While being no fan of either party (both sides would like to have us all "barefoot and pregnant" [for different reasons]- the democrats so that we would be beholding to them for their social programs; and the republicans so that they would have a ready low rent labor force beholding for our livlihood to their ever growing number of billionaire corporate contributors); still, I am particularly galled by the bold-faced lies of the Republicans that they just want to get America "up-and-going-again", when it should be obvious to anyone taking even a casual glance at the politicking of the last 3 1/2 years that in fact they have been nothing but totally obstructionist (at every turn)! As regards their nonsense that Obama's policies are hindering the economy: those policies are only scantily different from Clinton's, during whose terms we had prosperity (again - after it had tanked under Bush I), only to have it all squandered (again) under Bush II and cronies (during whose administration even Nancy Pelosi was calling it "a culture-of-corruption)." How bad do things have to be before someone who represents San Francisco can call somehere else "a culture of corruption"- and be correct(!)?? While I believe Obama's moral agenda is antichrist in nature (and I would not vote for him on that basis alone), I still have to acknowledge that given the $Trillion bag of turds that Bush II (and cronies) left him to deal with, and given an obstuctionist Republican Congress that doesn't give the proberbial rat's behind how much harm the rest of us suffer as long as they can return to power (to do it all over again) for corporate America, I think that (if I would be honest) I would have to say the president has done remarkably well. I wouldn't vote for Romney either. Why would any middle class American ever vote for someone whom we already know has already skimmed !300,000,000.00 off the top for himself -by sending middle class Americans' job to China, etc.??? THINK, PEOPLE!!!

In 2008, a poll by Washington Post/ABC News found that white people without a college degree favor John McCain, the Republican candidate, by 17 percentage points, while those with a college degree prefered Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, by 9 percentage points.

Now, everyone stop the name calling. If you think what someone says is stupid, ignorant, simple-minded or even just wrong, then go research the actual facts from a well-respected and independent source. (Hint...this does NOT include what you heard Rush Limbaugh say. Ever. It does not mean what you saw posted by your brother-in-law on Facebook, either. It's called research, and if you have the time to call someone an idiot, you have the time to look up why they are an idiot.) Then post the facts you found in your rebuttal without resorting to childish requests for IQ scores.

That being said...it is my opinion that most people, but not all, that lean hard to the right fall into one of the following categories.

          1) Uber-religious Christians who want to legislate the Bible, except for that pesky part about helping the poor and sick.

          2) Greedy snobs who want to shield themselves in gated mansions and truly believe they are what keeps the fabric of society from crumbling.

          3) NRA types who think our freedoms are trampled if we all can't have guns designed for the military.

          4) Racist bigots who fear and blame anyone that doesn't look like them.

          5) Anyone raised by or married to someone from the above four categories who has never learned or dared to think for themselves.

These are usually the people with the loudest and most obnoxious opinions, and therefore most likely to post here. They are also the least likely group to independently research facts before they form their opinion, because they listen to the talking heads for the catch phrase of the moment and just go with it.

I will cite a recent example. The Romney campaign is putting out that Obama wants to fight extending early voting to military members in Ohio. The fact is, he wants to extend it for everyone, including military. Republicans have tried to shorten it for everyone but military. This is easily checked by two minutes spent on Google. Anyone actually interested in facts would look it up, but hardcore right wingers will take it on fact that "Obama hates our troops". This kind of intellectual laziness is why they have such extreme views, they only see the hype.

So now that I have pissed off everyone on the right, be honest with yourselves for a minute. It's ok, you don't have to let us know you did it, but ask yourself. Which of the five categories above are you?

Difficult not to be amused with the liberal comments above. They must fear Palenty, who one of the candidates for VP who does a good job of articulating the total failure of Obama and his administration of career school teachers and lawyers who can only get government work.

This country is hungry for a president and administration that appreciates its Judeo Christian heritage and values. A president who has the experiences and relationships to draw on for solutions to the economic issues with which we are confronted. One who takes pride in US sovereignty. One who sincerely feels compassion for all of the citizens of the US and for all of its visitors. One who has a strong respect for the constitution and laws of the land. One who does not have a history of using his position in government to achieve personal enrichment. (That rules out just about every democrat in congress, not to mention a number of republicans).

I do not believe that even the most liberal black person, homosexual or lesbian, career educator, government employee or union worker would even suggest that Obama has any of the above qualities. Now, of course, those guys who received Obama directed payoffs from the government in return for campaign contributions and other favors, would say anything; their lack of credibility has already been established.

The question is, how much longer will Romney remain "mum" about his taxes ? If he has nothing to hide, why is he hiding them ? His own father, who he talks about so much, said that at least 12 years of taxes should be available to the public.

                    • TOP TEN QUESTIONS

that Mitt Romney is using to vet his Vice Presidential hopefuls:

                    1. How far back in the past can you backdate a corporate resignation?
                    2. What are the best offshore banks and countries to hide your wealth in?
                    3. If you had a choice to rebuild a troubled business, or max out it's loan potential and then cash it out and outsource the jobs while keeping all the money for yourself, what would be the most profitable thing for you to do?
                    4. Do you like to fire people?
                    5. Are corporations people too? (Follow-up: But you don't like to fire them, right?)
                    6. Are you concerned about the very poor; after all, they do have their own safety net already; so, do we really need to be concerned about them, the very poor, the regular poor or even the middle class?
                    7. Can you endear yourself to African Americans? (Like, can you sing "Who let the dogs out? Woof! Woof!")
                    8. Speaking of dogs: When going on a driving vacation, where do you strap the dog?
                    9. What is your ideal friendly bet? (Multiple choice: (a) one dollar, (b) five bucks, or (c) TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!)
                    10. Finally, will YOU give me 23 years of your Tax Returns so that I can make sure YOU have nothing to hide?

Incomes fall for all but wealthiest Americans

WASHINGTON - Fifty percent of U.S. workers earned less than $26,364 last year, and those earning less than $200,000 per year - roughly 99 percent of Americans - saw their earnings fall a collective $4.5 billion.

There were fewer jobs, and overall pay was trending down -- except for the nation's wealthiest, who saw a boost.

While the incomes of the top 1percent of the country rose slightly in 2010 (from $1,909,874 in 2009 to $2,196,124 last year), their collective wage earnings rose dramatically, by about $120 billion.

                                  • YOU KNOW WHAT? If YOU are not one of the 1%ers, then they probably got YOUR pay raises instead of you. You should send them a Thank You Note, say what!

We don't need to "punish" 'em. We just need 'em to pay for their own damn dancing horses.
