Romney launches welfare attack on Obama

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL -- Mitt Romney's campaign opened a new front in its battle to define President Obama as far to the left of even Democrats like Bill Clinton, with the presumptive GOP nominee accusing the president of trying to "reverse" welfare reform.

The GOP contender, whose campaign resurfaced this issue of welfare reform this morning with a new television ad and a conference call, cast the Clinton era welfare reform effort, which tied welfare payments to work, a "great accomplishment," and praised the value of a job as strengthening the American economy and American people.

In the next breath, he called out President Obama for what he claimed was an attempt to gut the work requirement.

"I hope you understand that President Obama in just the last few days has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare," Romney told a crowd gathered on a factory floor here. "That is wrong. If I’m president, I’ll put work back in welfare.”

The Romney campaign is charging that a waiver issued by the Department of Health and Human Services would exempt states from the work requirements contained in the law; the memo at issue stipulates that a waiver only be granted if the state offers a substitute that achieves the same work goals.

Romney also defended his own work on welfare reform as Governor of Massachusetts, already a target for Democrats.

"We must include more work in welfare. When I was governor of my state, I fought time and again. My legislature passed a bill removing the work requirements at the level we’d had in the past. I vetoed that and then fought time and again to get more work requirements, to raise the work requirements in my state, not because I don’t think people who need help should be helped," Romney said. "I very much agree that those who are seriously disabled or are unable to work need to have help of the rest of us, but those who can work ought to have the opportunity for a good job, and if they’re getting state assistance, they ought to have the requirement for a good job. We will end a culture dependency and restore a culture of good, hard work.”

In his first public appearance since Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, Romney also set politics aside at the top of his remarks to call for a moment of silence for the victims.

"I'd like to have a moment of silence to honor the people who lost their lives in Wisconsin in that tragic, tragic shooting at the Sikh temple. The tragedy is even more profound because the Sikh religion and the Sikh people are such peaceful, loving individuals," Romney said. "And I think its also more tragic because the shooter was apparently someone who was motivated by hate. Hate based on race. Hate based on religion. For all those reasons, this is something that touches us very deeply."

Sad state here is that you get free training and you get a chance to go to work and lift your family up. Why Obama thought he should take this out is beyond me. I suppose he wants the poor to stay right were they are and not gain pride in themselves as they get themselves off welfare.

I believe the goal from both parties is to perpetuate the growth of coporations profits by continuing to allow them tax breaks to move our jobs to India, China, and Brasil. There is no intention of them coming back here when they can exploit labor, resources, and environments in other developing nations as they did here in the early 1900's. The Government knows that we will never return to prosperity and using this as a menas for the return of Feudalism on the American Shores. Bush killed our Constitution and Obama has signed many bills giving dictatorial powers to the presidency whether him or someone else! There will be no jobs to gain welfare, but we will be given everything to passify this already weak and mindless country! Nothing confusing about it!

I wonder if romney will be bringing back all the American jobs he shipped overseas? i can understand why he did what he did. he wanted to make a few bucks by cutting costs. He didn't care that is was American's that lost their jobs, but at least he has the money to show for his efforts and you will find that in off shore bank accounts.

Both political parties are responsible for out-sourcing American jobs. The thought was the US could survive and prosper as a service economy with much less manufacturing jobs.

The cheap flood of imports, various bubbles, and deficit spending kept the US ecomy going until the last bubble burst. Now even massive deficit spending can't stimulate the economy into producing jobs. Too much spending goes overseas rather into the local economy.

What jobs that remain are subject to the law of supply and demand. Too many people competing for too few jobs results in lower pay for the jobs that are available. Millions of illegal aliens and H1B visa foriegn workers add to the labor supply to the detriment of the rest of the US work force.

The US economy bleeds dollars overseas through trade deficits and remitances from illegal workers yet it is considered racist to try to end these practices. It is no wonder the US is heading down the toilet.

Obozo and Harry Reid two of the biggest liars in politics. For all of you nice Nevada citizens how is the employment situation looking for you with the moron Harry Reid and his loser boss working out for you? Nevada has the highest unemployment in the nation and guess where Harry lives and how much he makes. You would think the citizens would insure both of these morons leading the democratic ticket are tossed out real quick in NOV. As far as Reid goes, he is a dirty liar and a crook and he definitely needs to be tossed out of office. Obozo the teleprompter genius and liar-in-charge must be defeated if you ever want to have a job in the future.

The nanny run government led by the idiot who fails to produce his college records and keeps lying to you must be sent packing if this economy is ever to recover!

The liberal nuts who think he is doing a good job are the idiots like George Clooney and the other celebrities who make millions and do nothing to earn it! The military puts their lives on the line and losers limbs and lives and get meager pay while the idiots leading the country get paid millions and have great bennies.

Lets insure they are all gone this Nov and get some real leadership that really cares for you as an American who wants a bright future and an income to raise your family.

Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Obama, Axlehead, Wasserman Schultz, Lucas, Wilson, Plouffe and other greedy politicans have it made and don't have to worry about their future. They have off shore accounts and are set for life. They may bad mouth Romney all the want but he is the only candidate that can change your life and insure you will have a better future if you desire to work hard for it. He will bring you jobs and he will improve the economy and the status of America.

Make you vote count this time in Nov and get rid of the elite losers who are keeping you down with no real hope and change.

Once again Romney is a liar. The proposed changed signed by Obama was requested more than a month ago after republicans asked for it. As a matter of fact, when Romney was govenor he signed with other republican govenors this request for a change to allow states to make their own changes to exempt them if they came up with a better alternative. This is a massive lie and for that reason alone no one shouldd trust this SOB.

Romney contention to link work with welfare is irrational. There
is no country on earth that provides jobs & opportunities to 100% of its
citizens. Even America with much exhaustive employment, industrial &
research opportunities besides world's most sophisticated defense could not
provide 100% employment to its citizens. Even in homes all members of the
family have never been employed. During young age & employment employees
get medical coverage from employers. As soon as employees get disabled &
unemployed or lay off he/she loses insurance coverage for medical to remain
fit. During young age insurance get premium with no chances of sickness &
with off job everything gets lost when he/she makes contribution to national
treasury by tax payments in time. Romney is radically incorrect and irrational
in his concept & President Obama has taken the right decision upheld by
Supreme Court. With penalty for no insurance, national healthcare will be
cheaper & more economical as well insurance companies with more business
& jobs with additional inputs in Research & development, better &
cheaper healthcare throughout the country. Romney is very incorrect for
national strategy & devising new concepts in America development all round
which is already downgraded to AAA category. Manufacturing in America along
with Public Transportation system have to be restarted & reorganized to
create jobs & other business opportunism with complete regulation for
banking & investment sectors to protect consumer interests & people of
America. People of America must decide to vote for rights & freedom from
job losses instead of color or other considerations that are just visual &
imaginary without substantial output. There is a lot talk show on TV by media
& other agencies, but none is education & creating awareness of people
of America what is right for them as most people are High School with no vision
& just assuming guaranteed with no professional knowledge. The other day I
met a guy with family & three kids asking that he is being laid off in
July, 2012 & need to change over the job to other profession being just
High School. I advised him & he was surprised that nobody ever told him
like that & started upgrading his academics before eldest child gets into
college. Romney has failed to clear his image of income & off shoring of
jobs by refusing to submit the tax returns for 10 years & rather going
abroad to UK & Israel who have star organizations for human welfare through
comprehensive healthcare network in the world. He cannot distract people of
America what they are seeking in a President.

Nevada has the highest unemployment in the country yet they keep voting reid back in...I do not understand it ...I did notice last time around that reid only won because of the union vote...the majority of the state was against ried but the union maids in LV and Reno gave it to him ...the rest of the counties all voted the other way.

I find it fascinating that the economic crisis began during the Bush era! Since Obama, it hasn't improved. I guess I find it sad that all of you sit on the right or left! I am a fiscal conservative but identify myself by the works I do for those most needy! The fact that the right believes the snake oil of lower taxes for the wealthy equalling more jobs is just plain silly. It seems that republicans have lost sight of what being a republican is all about! All I see from the right wing is racism and hatred! Essentially all of you on the right are hedonists and racists from what I read! Of course, the Dems believe that our checkbook is never ending! You can not run a household in the red every year and expect anything but a loss of prosperity! You can not take 20 percent of my hard earned dollars and not expect the wealthy to pay the same! You can not make laws to impose on me that our police and legislators are not required to follow! The sheer level of Ayn Randism in this place is disgusting. Reagonomics killed this nation! Pork in our congress has killed this nation. Geaorge Bush- a republican has pushed us into a false war with a never ending enemy! Our deficit went through the roof during Reagan! The reality is that no jobs will come back by giving the wealthiest a break and putting more on us down here in the middle class. Disgusting to see that the republicans are nothing more than self-gratifying, hedonists that would prefer feudalism over democracy, fascism over freedom, and hatred rather than following the steps of our Savior, Jesus Christ. You all claiming to be republicans or conservatives are nothing more than rich people wanting to get richer. I would go for tax breaks to the wealthy if my middle class income tax was the same rate! The fact they pay less than we do causes me to say screw you rich people and i look forward to the collapse when you will suffer and go into chaos because your precious trinkets and money are no longer worth a crap! Don't come to this gun owning, God fearing, middle class, hardworking, freedom seeking, people loving man and his land! See ya in the chaos.

Total failure. No jobs, 5 trillion more in debt in just 3 1/2 years WOW, No budget, food stamp out of control, 50% of Americans don't pay any Federal income taxes and the list goes on and on and on and on. Don't have the time to list them all. This man has got to be defeated this November or America I grew up knowing will never, ever be the same. The American people know this and I will give them credit they will see that he doesn't get reelected. If you want to see the economy totally collapse then watch it crumble if he is reelected. We will not ever recover from it at least the way I will have remembered it.

What amazes me is Obama's class warfare is working to a large degree. He has people convinced that if those he deems wealthy would pay "their fair share" all of our problems will go away. Do the math; the wealthy already pay by far the most tax $$$; albeit there are tax codes which allow for certain legal deductions. If all deductions were taken away and you get to crucify the rich; it wouldn't be so much as a rounding error. And don't forget, the rich own companies, employ people, pay people, provide benefits; and in turn the employees get to purchase homes, buy cars, etc...Don't bite the hand that fees you to hard or you might be looking for a job that you're over qualified for.

I am a believer that a strong central government can only lead to feudalism and eventual despotism. I believe that we need to lop the head of the serpent, including Willard to return this nation to the republic. I believe we need to tax the intra and international coporations to fund our infrastructure and resource preservation. After all, all I see on my freeways is big business paying nothin at all. I wuld like to pay my taxes to my state! Not some conceited, corrupted central government. After all, it easier to keep your reps under control closer to home. If a big corporation wants to move jobs out, send the dirty bastards with them and tariff the hell out of it coming back in. No, it is not right for the lower classes and middle classes to foot a bill at 20% while the rich people get a 9% to 15%. That is just plain BS.

We seem to agree on some middle ground here, but I think you've been sold a bill of goods that lumps all rich people into one category. Don't forget that the rich are responsible for an overwhelming majority of donations to groups that help people here and abroad. It's not as simple as Obama is trying to make it sound. And if the rich were to pay a flat 30% with no deductions, it would not amount to very much overall. And I do agree that globalization and unions have destroyed the middle class. We should give big time incentives to companies to stay here and hire our citizens or tax the $hit out of them if they don't.

Bingo! I believe we, as states could provide incentives and low interest loans to mom and pop businesses who pay well and prvide real benefits. Corporatism mingling with our government and military equals fascism by definition. Take a good look, Jack. You live in Fascism. Corporatism and capitalism are very different. One takes away competition, hence the ever rising prices of goods while they record profits. Gas should go down when demand is low and rise when demand is high, not rising when use is low and reducing when high! That is forcing us to pay more instead of the essential foundation of capitalism that uses competion to set prices. See, it is just what Jeffery Raiman calls the "Carnival Mirror."

After 3 and a half years of that moslem mulatto in the white house, I have learned one irrefutable fact. What ever he does is not good for the country or even his party. It is good for him. He is the essential Chicagoan vote buyer. Power is what he wants and he will ride roughshod over the Constitution to get it.

Welfare...as defined as food stamps and housing assistance takes up about 1% of the tax dollar.

Its a great shame that right wingers are so ignorant and uninformed that they ignore the rich fatcats stealing their future and their children's future so they can argue over scraps given to help the poor.

Willard talking about welfare is such a joke. The amount of money he's stolen from American taxpayers by he and his ilk not contributing his fair share is astounding.

Please stop with Obama's "fair share" mantra, it's getting old already. I paid in excess of $250,000 in federal income tax alone last year. I also was able to use the dividend and capital gains tax code and pay 15% on a portion of my income; which is the same rate for all citizens. Even if they raise taxes on the so-called rich, increase capital gains tax and dividend tax; it would amount to a drop in the bucket in the overall scheme of things. It's merely a ploy Obama is using to make people assume all of our problems would go away if, who he deems rich, would only pay their fair share. It would amount to biff.

Obama is a Socialist and doesn't try to hide it, so I don't understand the attempts of some on this site to deny it. Pure Capitalism does not exist. What we call American Capitalism is a very modified version including many checks and balances through laws, regulations, and oversight. Government on all levels provides these checks and balances and also provides much of our infrastructure (all at considerable taxpayer cost as well as government waste and corruption). What has made America great is the limitation of government control and the encouragement of individual entrepreneurship through our modified capitalistic system. A difficult balance between our style of capitalism and government interference must be achieved in order for the survival of the American way of life and our prosperity and freedom. Obama and his fellow travelers wish to upset or even destroy this balance by taking more and more control over our individualism, our resources, our very way of life, our wealth, and most everything good about America. They wish to make "1984" a reality with Big Brother Obama in charge.

Open your eyes and see the future under Obama.

"Welfare" is a fuzzy term defined by the following:

                                        General retirement and disability insurance
                                        Federal employee retirement and disability
                                        Unemployment compensation
                                        Housing assistance
                                        Food and nutrition assistance
                                        Other income security

In total...those things take up about 6.4% of the tax dollar...however, as you can see from the list, some of those things are payroll deductions and shouldn't really be included. The two that should be..namely Housing Assistance and Food and Nutrition assistance account for 1% of the tax dollar.....1%.

Arguing over scraps when the biggest pieces of the pie are being stolen by people like defense contractors, corporate raiders, etc...is simply pure stupidity. Foolish Willard and his cronies trying to assume that everyone is as stupid, uninformed and misguided as the morons who will vote for him. Welfare is a non-issue in priority to where the money is REALLY going. They use it to race bait, to bash the poor, and to have ignorants arguing over nothing while they steal your retirement and your future.

Stop fighting over scraps. Educate yourself or lose your country.

I too think we should have work attached to welfare.. however, when our country does not supply enough work for us here in the states, and sends alot overseas (Bain Capitol), how are we suppose to find work if it doesnt exist? And if you people who dont receive welfare think its a cushy placce to be, then check out the measly payments welfare people receive. You cant live off the amount. My suggestion to those who are stereotypical is this... Give us more jobs, stop being greedy and quit judging. We lost our jobs due to the recession and jobs being sent overseas. And you want to turn around and blame us for trying to survive???

Welfare critics attack the freeloaders who have no desire to work or be productive; unfortunately, often times the people actively looking for work with little success are caught in the same net. If Obama would stop encouraging ILLEGALs to take American jobs and stop protecting ILLEGALs who already have American jobs, millions of jobs would open up to Americans. Many of these jobs in construction and manufacturing pay a decent wage while others may not be so lucrative - but atleast it's a job that would help you get by until the economy improves.

What would be the state of the nation if most of the 47% who pay no federal income taxes didn't cheat on their taxes? In addition, let's take away the politically motivated tax credits and deductions available to all. That should help.

I would imagine the IRS would closely monitor the tax returns of the wealthy (including those of political candidates) while spending little, if any, time of those of the "poor".

Indeed, welfare has become the only line-of-sight for attacks these days. Yes welfare reform needs to be fixed. No, we don't need Willard to fix it as he is a "yes" man all the way. He will only do the bidding of his rich buddies. Not really unlike Obama. The real change will come from removing the central government and the central banking scam unleashed after Lincoln was killed for not doing it. Bring back gold and silver as the foundation of our money and watch the dollar rise again. Give the federal gov't minimal powers with an increase in power to local and state gov'ts. Pay our taxes to our states and yes, if those of you hillbilly racists want to exploit people and resources, the rest of us with moral decency can come by and kick your asses. It is not hard to fix this problem, but the one thing I have learned in life is that the masses are unable to think for themselves and even, in these current days, come up with plans to stop the bleeding. Many of todays people on assistance are the remnants of the loss of jobs rapidly going to China and India and Brasil. Take a look at real statistics from real research and see that these three nations are expected to top our GDP. Bring us home from the imperialistic war we are in. Bring gold and silver back. End the Fed. Vote independents. Where are these conversations. Comments that are no more than Obama is an ass. Obama is a black. Obama is a socialist is not helping this problem. Our collective woes do not soley reside on the topic of welfare. Those fellow citizens and brethren out there right now are tragedies thanks to globalization and a greedy, gluttonous, hedonistic few who believe they are superior to the rest of us. The problem is bigger than we can imagine. Biblically speaking, we are seeing the 7-headed beast rising from the sea. There is so much more going on here than a few that actually abuse the welfare system. Oh, and by the way, current policies under TANF is no more than 5 years on it no matter what. So, I guess your small minded attacks at those collecting welfare are really our working class who found that this country and it's leaders do not care one iota about them or us. They have no problems taking away our jobs. As a matter of fact, Willard put a whole lot of people on the welfare rolls. Pull your heads out of the sand and wake up. He will be directly responsible for the largest exodus of jobs we have ever seen. Why do you think the Redumblicans want him in there sooooo bad?
