ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL -- Mitt Romney's campaign opened a new front in its battle to define President Obama as far to the left of even Democrats like Bill Clinton, with the presumptive GOP nominee accusing the president of trying to "reverse" welfare reform.
The GOP contender, whose campaign resurfaced this issue of welfare reform this morning with a new television ad and a conference call, cast the Clinton era welfare reform effort, which tied welfare payments to work, a "great accomplishment," and praised the value of a job as strengthening the American economy and American people.
In the next breath, he called out President Obama for what he claimed was an attempt to gut the work requirement.
"I hope you understand that President Obama in just the last few days has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare," Romney told a crowd gathered on a factory floor here. "That is wrong. If I’m president, I’ll put work back in welfare.”
The Romney campaign is charging that a waiver issued by the Department of Health and Human Services would exempt states from the work requirements contained in the law; the memo at issue stipulates that a waiver only be granted if the state offers a substitute that achieves the same work goals.
Romney also defended his own work on welfare reform as Governor of Massachusetts, already a target for Democrats.
"We must include more work in welfare. When I was governor of my state, I fought time and again. My legislature passed a bill removing the work requirements at the level we’d had in the past. I vetoed that and then fought time and again to get more work requirements, to raise the work requirements in my state, not because I don’t think people who need help should be helped," Romney said. "I very much agree that those who are seriously disabled or are unable to work need to have help of the rest of us, but those who can work ought to have the opportunity for a good job, and if they’re getting state assistance, they ought to have the requirement for a good job. We will end a culture dependency and restore a culture of good, hard work.”
In his first public appearance since Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, Romney also set politics aside at the top of his remarks to call for a moment of silence for the victims.
"I'd like to have a moment of silence to honor the people who lost their lives in Wisconsin in that tragic, tragic shooting at the Sikh temple. The tragedy is even more profound because the Sikh religion and the Sikh people are such peaceful, loving individuals," Romney said. "And I think its also more tragic because the shooter was apparently someone who was motivated by hate. Hate based on race. Hate based on religion. For all those reasons, this is something that touches us very deeply."

Romney has gone about the country talking about “free stuff.” You know what “free stuff” really is? It’s TARP to bail out Wall Street and the Banksters. It’s tax cuts for the rich, especially tax breaks on dividends, capital gains (carried interest), and estate taxes – Breaks that only apply to the very rich. Romney is on video promoting “free federal money” in tax credits for businesses.
It’s the great big share of the budget given to the Military Industrial Complex. The defense budget, which includes subsidies to Europe and military bases in Japan, as well as thermo nuclear weapons no longer needed as defense against a Soviet attack. The largest growing public sector is Homeland Security. What a mushrooming monstrosity this has become.
You know what’s NOT “free stuff?” Trust fund entitlement programs that YOU pay into like Social Security and Medicare, or even unemployment insurance that your employer (and you in lower wages) pay premiums for. And what do Teapublicans like Paul Ryan and Romney want to do? They want YOU to make the sacrifice and accept cuts to those programs.
They want YOU to pay for unnecessary wars Bush/Cheney did not pay for, and deregulation of Wall Street that depleted your home equity and 401ks, and possibly loss of your job and the wages and benefits along with that job. If you had to file bankruptcy because you lost health care coverage -- too bad. So the Republicans mismanaged the economy, and for a decade job creations has barely kept pace with population growth, and wages have been stagnant for even longer. It is YOU, the middle class and working poor who are called upon to pay for the mess, and to provide more “free stuff” to the rich.

Welfare reform worked so well because it made common sense changes to a system that promoted a culture of dependency. An important part of that was the requirement that people on welfare improve their job skills and get a job.
Apparently, Obama wants to go back to the old system where generations in a family lived off the public 'dole', with no effort to improve their lot in life.
The Obama campaign said no state "that waters down work requirements will be considered" for a waiver under the administration's policy, announced last month, intended to give more flexibility to states on how they implement welfare programs.

As governor of Massachusetts, Romney explicitly supported the same waiver program he is now criticizing. Romney was one of 29 Republican governors to sign a 2005 letter from the Republican Governor's Association to congressional leadership touting the benefits a waiver program would bring their states.
The Senate bill provides states with the flexibility to manage their TANF programs and effectively serve their low-income populations. Increased waiver authority, allowable work activities, availability of partial work credit and the ability to coordinate state programs are all important aspects of moving recipients from welfare to work.

Yet another lie. When the President said "you didn't build that", he was referring to roads and bridges...not to the businesses themselves. If President Obama had used the proper demonstrative adjective "those" and said "you didn't build those" then Willard would have absolutely no campaign issue whatsoever. As it stands, the only thing he can run on is based on a lie. But, since Willard has proven himself to be a liar repeatedly then I guess his best bet is to stick with what he does best. Take his opponent's words out of context and lie. He's got nothing else.
But isn't the President the greatest orator in living memory? Isn't he a superb wordsmith? Fact is even when put in context he was denigrating people who have built a business from the ground up. He can claim all he wants that the government was there to help but the fact is it is the individual who make a difference.
Then build your own road to your business or your work. If a river or creek is in the way, build your own bridge or ferry. It's obvious that you wouldn't want to rely on something collectively built when an individual that stands on his own would never seek a government handout. House broken into? Mugged in the mall parking lot? Pull out that Smith & Wesson and take care of it yourself. No sense relying on that socialistic institution known as the police department. Those socialists are paid by the government to protect everybody...even the freeloaders who don't pull their weight. House on fire? Grab the garden hose and some buckets. No socialistic fire department is needed to save an independent, self-made man.

But, to take something as simple as the wrong pronoun and build your entire campaign around it, that takes a special kind of arrogance. Do any of you people understand the concept of "interdependence"? Or "interaction"? Or how about the concept of "United we stand, divided we fall"? That means that the individual could not be successful without the government, and the government could not be successful without the individual. The universe is an interconnected system and everything depends on everything else to function properly. The amount of time and energy being wasted on arguing back and forth about whether the individual is more important or the government is more important (and what somebody said about it) is really rather disgusting. Can't you guys just stipulate that neither could really function without the other and move on to something that matters? Spending this much energy on trivialities is such a waste, and what does it accomplish?

Actually some time back they had river crossings. You would lead your wagon up onto it and they the owner would pull you across. Someone built that because there was enough traffic to warrant it. The government did not build that. Also there was a need for that fairy because people were building business and towns so a shorter route made sense to get people there. So while someone else risked their money to build a store or other type of business. Someone else thought.... hmmmm, I tie a few logs together I can shorten the distance that someone would have to travel to get to said business. That must be worth at least two bits.

And when Romney and the other Governors asked for the power to "seek new and innovative solutions to help welfare recipients achieve independence" that's okay, but when the HHS gives them that power, Obama is "gutting" the work requirements? If you are aganst the idea of using the very waivers that the law as drafted permits, to give the States more flexibility to try pilot or demonstration programs, fine, take that position. They still can't believe it was the Democrats that gave us Social Security and Medicare. Repuckens had nothing to do with it. I don't see all the old Repuckens getting out of SS and Medicare

Tea Baggers are famous for only reading headlines on Fox News, and not researching the issues at hand. I bet they don't even read the Fox News spin. Unfortunately, my brother is a rabid Tea Bagger for the past three years, and I've caught him doing just that four or five times already. Doesn't research the issues, just regurgitates the lies he hears on Fox News. On this issue, the Department of Health and Human Services approved waivers for two states, when their Republican governors asked for the waivers. One of the governors was from Nevada, the other from Utah. Romney is the most shameless liar in the history of Presidential elections. The sad thing is, there is so much hatred out there for the man in the White House that the ditto-heads and Tea Baggers buy into every single lie that man sells. Talk about dirty liars . . . !

Also, once I challenged him that I'd watch only FOX if he only watched MSNBC for week, and he had a hissy fit claiming even CNN was far-Left media. And when I told him I have taken political ideology tests over the years and score moderate leaning to the left, he was incredulous to learn there were such things as these tests.

I could make a video. I lost MOST of my pension because one of the companies he worked for took bankruptcy. This was under BUSH. A new Gallup poll shows that nearly 10 percent of voters who supported Barack Obama during his 2008 run have decamped and will be supporting Republican challenger Mitt Romney in this next election. At nine percent, the rate of Obama '08 defectors is nearly double the five percent of former McCain '08 supporters who now say they'll cast a vote for Obama.
Partly loyalty is higher in the Republican camp too, with 92 percent of former McCain supporters saying they're sticking with the red ticket, while only 86 percent of Obama's 2008 base say they're staying true.
The poll surveyed more than 2,000 registered voters who punched a ballot in 2008.
Now for some number play: if we make the broad assumption that the poll data is representative of the general population and do some extrapolation, tallying nine percent of 69,456,897 (Obama's 2008 vote count) and subtracting five percent of John McCain's 59,934,814 votes, we end up with a potential 3.25 million more votes for Romney than McCain had four years ago. It's nothing concrete, but it's becoming clear that election 2012 will be a far different race than 2008 was.

Deferred action program could legalize 1.8 million young immigrants

As many as 1.76 million young illegal immigrants could qualify for temporary legal status under President Obama's deferred action program, says a new report from the Migration Policy Institute. That's more than double the Obama administration's initial estimate of 800,000 people who would benefit from the program.
The new number reflects the Obama administration's updated guidelines released last Friday depicting who qualifies for the temporary legal status. Initially, only young illegal immigrants under 30 who entered the country as children, graduated from high school and had no criminal record would make the cut. Now, young people who didn't graduate or receive their G.E.D. can still apply for the legal status as long as they re-enroll in high school by the time they apply.
The government will begin accepting applications online on August 15, and administration officials said the nearly $500 application fee will completely pay for the administrative costs of reviewing the applications. Those accepted will also get work permits, and will have to renew their legal status every two years.
