2012: Romney gets hammered on tax plan

The Tampa Bay Times’ editorial board rips Romney’s tax plan, based on the Tax Policy Center’s analysis: “The numbers speak volumes about the Romney campaign's priorities. While President Barack Obama is proposing that taxes rise on the wealthiest Americans by letting the Bush tax cuts lapse only for those with incomes of $250,000 or more, Romney would flip that formula and give further breaks to the nation's millionaires, people who are already paying the lowest effective tax rate in 60 years.”

And: “If he has a dispute with the results, he needs to provide specifics on just how he will provide massive tax relief to those at the top without adding to the tax burdens of average people.”

Here’s a tough ad, which claims that Romney “pay less, you pay more,” that his plan would raise taxes on all but the rich, and the Washington Post’s fact checker calls it accurate: “This ad is tough, but we cannot fault the accuracy of its key points. To some extent, the Romney campaign has been hoist with its own petard by refusing to provide sufficient detail that shows how the numbers add up in Romney’s tax and budget plans. So we are left with the judgment of a respected and independent third party. We hold campaign ads to a high standard, particularly attack ads. If Romney releases the missing details, and a new analysis finds that Romney can meet the stated goals of his tax plan, then we can certainly revisit this analysis. But, until then, for the first time in this frequently nasty campaign, we award a rare Geppetto Checkmark for a campaign ad.”

Priorities USA is up with an ad hitting Romney for the closing of a steel plant that led to a man and his family not being able to afford health insurance, and the man’s wife died of cancer.

The New York Times looks at the swing vote of unmarried women: “Single women are one of the country’s fastest-growing demographic groups — there are 1.8 million more now than just two years ago. They make up a quarter of the voting-age population nationally, and even more in several swing states, including Nevada. And though they lean Democratic — in a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, single women favored Mr. Obama over his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, by 29 points — they are also fickle about casting their ballots, preoccupied with making ends meet and alienated from a political system they say is increasingly deaf to their concerns. But the Obama campaign, needing their support to offset traditional Republican strength among married women, is lavishing attention on them.”

Gallup says Obama’s getting fewer 2008 voters than Romney is from the Republican side. Well, yeah. That’s why this is a close election. 2008 was an electoral landslide.

The Tax policy Center reviews Romney's plan--as best they can without more details--and giving it all the benefits of the doubt conclude that Romney wants to give himself even larger tax cuts, and to do it middle class families on average will pay $2,000 more in taxes.

This is one reason why Romney's tax returns so important. Transparency and vetting is important for ALL candidates, especially for POTUS, Commander in Chief, and leader of the free world. Heck, companies will run credit checks on candidates before hiring folks in every day jobs, not to mention getting a mortgage or even approval for a cabinet position.

In particular it is important to see Romney's tax returns. First and foremost because Romney's economic plan, specifically his tax policy is extrinsically linked to how he pays his own taxes. How much would he benefit from his own plan? Voters have a right to know before they go to the polls.

Romney in particular needs to be thoroughly vetted in the area of tax returns, in part due to his vast wealth--setting a historic record--but more importantly because of Romney's track record of NEVER releasing tax returns when he ran for the Senate and then ran for Governor. When he ran for governor, ALL his opponents released many years of tax returns, and Romney still refused to release his -- And instead had the temerity to complain that his opponent's spouse needed to release returns. WTF?

And during these prior campaigns Romney was caught lying about where he filed his taxes in order to cheat on eligibility to run for governor. When he got busted for filing in Utah (where he saved a bunch on $$$) instead of Massachusetts, at first he lied saying he did not know this had happened. Then he was busted for trying to pay taxes in Massachusetts retroactively to avoid getting caught in the first place. There still is no proof that he paid the Massachusetts taxes. Regardless he did such a poor job as governor that he wouldn't have been reelected, and Massachusetts will overwhelming reject Romney in the 2012 election. WTF!?

Aside from transferring the Bahama's trust corp. into Ann's name the day before he was sworn in, and taking the hard drives when he left as governor, Romney blatantly and repeatedly LIED about filing taxes in Massachusetts. We see the same pattern now, with his adamant "It's untrue, dishonest, and inaccurate. It's wrong" thou-dost-protest-too-much denial. We see the uncomfortable hehehe laugh when cornered about his finances, and the LIE that he doesn't know if he ever paid less than a 13.9% tax rate, and the second LIE that he will be happy to check and get back with the media.

Of course Romney always does this when on video to deflect, then NEVER gets back with the press reverting to his stance that his finances are private. And he's doing it again, right now. Well of course, because he knows all the other years that he paid less than a 13.9% tax rate and in fact there may be a year or more when he paid zero taxes. How would that look?

Those who defend release of only two recent sanitized returns (what his father referred to as "flukes") with the 2010 still missing important information, and the 2011 being held until as close to the election as possible -- These folks are a delusional minority. Even Ed Rollins and other Republicans say these two years are not sufficient.

Those who parrot Romney's lame excuse that McCain released only two years are not being intellectually honest. McCain's financials have been out for all the years he has been in the Senate, and McCain does not have a portfolio like Romney's and more importantly had not already been caught in lies about his taxes.

Too late -- The majority of voters already know Romney is not trustworthy on many levels. Whether extreme flip-flopping, being vague on positions, and just general secrecy, the man is not presidential material. That Romney would be so arrogant to think he could get away with not releasing his tax returns is an insult to “the intelligence of the American people.” (Those are Romney’s own Projection Politics’ words, so just throw them back at him – also “put up or shut up” and see who rubber is and who glue is regarding burden of proof.)

Romney is so greedy and tight he wouldn't pay taxes starting in 2002 when he knew he would start running for president, or even by 2007 when he did run for president. This in itself tells one a lot about Romney, and his sense of entitlement and belief that he doesn't have to play by the same rules as everyone else. I question Romney's mental stability--not just the bullying, impersonating a cop, not liking to be touched, lack of social skills--the man is not "right in the head."

Romney -- He's not in it for you.

And the false equivalencies from rightwingers have been mind-bending as well. Really? "You people" think attacking the president for conspiracy theories like his birth certificate compares to Romney releasing 8-10 years of his tax returns, which are always released by candidates? Or that college transcripts, which are never released by candidates compares to releasing tax returns? Seriously!? Or Eric Fuhrman equating Harry Reid's claim that he has a source who told him Romney has not paid his fair share of taxes is the same as McCarthyism? WTF!?

Sweet Jeebus the rightwing has gone off a cliff. They are completely insane, ignorant, and lacking any Rule of Reason.

Sam, the Republican plan is to extend tax cuts for everyone. If Obama raises the taxes on those earning above $250,000 which is actually the top 3 1/2 % of taxpayers, that will increase the tax burden of 1.2 million Subchapter S Corporations. This means apporximately 700,000 of the hardworking middle class Americans will nbe laid-off under Obama's plan. Under Romney's plan they will keep their jobs. It is really the Republican's who will help the middle class and cut un-employment.

What is the source of your 1.2 million s corps? I do almost 40 s corp returns a year and maybe one will have taxable income of over 250,000. Is this IRS data you are quoting?

Romney tax plan is like everything else that he puts forth, vague and secretive. He can’t give us any details or show any studies or facts but once the American people to just trust him. I can’t trust anyone who runs for this high of office and won’t show his tax returns. I may not have been as persistence in wanting to see them but since he is so resistance in not doing so it put up a big red flag for me. Plus, having secret offshore bank accounts also make me wonder. How American are you that you need to hide your wealth? So far, what I’ve gotten is a whole lot of nothing on his job bill or his tax bill or what he would replace Obama care with. Like I said, “A whole lot of nothing”

I think most working/middle class Americans know by now that trickle down never, ever works. Why not make tax cuts for the 1% tied to how many long term, good paying jobs with good benefits they use those tax breaks to create? Guess that would mean they are no longer in the business of destroying the middle class, and that is something that Gover and Rover would never approve of.

The only reason it is seen as "secret", is because his plan is to further cut the tax "burden" on the wealthiest Americans.

The middle class and those earning less than $30,000? While he may not technically 'raise' taxes on those Americans, he will end most of the current deductions. By eliminating those deductions, he increases the burden on the everyone except the wealthiest. So, while he can honestly say that he won't raise taxes at this point (they wouldn't go from say 7.25% to 7.5%), the loss of money to everyone except the wealthiest Americans is real and will happen.

So, if you earn about $85,000 family income and have a family of 4, you probably received a tax refund this year. Romney will eliminate most (if not all) major deductions so that you would probably be paying about the same amount in taxes. This is just one way of adding additional income to the government under Romney to aid his friends and the wealthiest supporters of the GOP.

I'm waiting untill early September to see Romneys tax returns. This could be a really smart move on Romney's part. If he has paid a lot of taxes every year and then releases the returns a couple of months before the election, it'll make him look good and give him a bounce.

If he doesn't release by September, then we'll all know just how much he does have to hide and it won't be good for him. IMHO, if he doesn't release by Sept., it'll cost him the election.

Romney is such a greedy and tight person with such a sense of entitlement, I highly doubt he paid a lot of taxes. When he got involved with the 2000 Olympics, he did it planning to leverage himself back into politics. Now maybe he didn't know for certain whether he would run in Massachusetts, but he saved a lot of money claiming his primary residence in Utah.

Two things: 1) Romney believes he can always play by different rules than everyone else, and 2) Paying as little taxes as possible is an obsession with Romney, to the point he wouldn't pay more in taxes starting in 2002, or even starting in 2007 when he first started running for president.

No, like Palin making the decision she would never run for President when she quit halfway through her term as governor, Romney made the conscience decision to evade taxes and just hope he could use McCain as precedence and release only two years of returns -- incomplete and last minute at that. This was calculated.

Too bad the rightwing lemmings are enabling this arrogant shyster who thinks he is above the law and entitled to be president. The two years of returns is very bad precedence to continue, and is likely to erode to zero returns. Romney's father is turning in his grave.

          #6.6 - Tue Aug 7, 2012 4:23 PM EDT

Personally I would like to see the so called precedence of releasing tax returns erode to zero. I don't think one's tax returns are any ones business. They are many more important issues to run on than someone's tax records. I am sure that the IRS has reviewed many returns submitted by the very wealthy and I assure you if there have been irregularities in Romney's returns it would have been found.

What has Romney done to make him think he is above the law as you state in your last paragraph untrue patriot?

Now when is Obama and Holder going to release the documents on "Fast and Furious", those are much more important than tax returns. What is Obama hiding with his "executive privilege" in trying to protect himself, Holder and the Administration? How about the WH Security Leaks that are much more serious but the so called "political pundits on First Read" can't bring themselves to mention those. To concerned about tax returns.

This is how big business works. Hide everything while you're stealing from Americans. Refuse to show how you stole from Americans. Walk away with millions in bonuses, and laugh at Americans because they're so stupid, they believe everything you say. If America doesn't wake up and quite believing everything these crooks tell us we're doomed. I hope the American voter is smarter than the Americans who worship the rich.

Republicans hoped that they could do what they have done in recent elections: sucker the middle class with the idea that helping the rich is the solution for everyone. Voters are finally beginning to find the cheese. And Romney's plan to cut the highest tax rates on earned income to 20% and essentially get rid of capital gains taxes is obscene. It's like the rich would be paying the tax rates of the lower middle class on earned income and no tax on investment income. That will definitely result in things like elimination of mortgage deductions and favorable tax treament for all forms of pensions and 401K(s). The big screw wasn't concealed well enough this time. (Those independent budget analysts all agree the plan is either a budget buster or will have to be balanced with tax increases on the ordinary voters.) Romney, Karl Rove, Norquist and others need to re-read their Machiavelli. (Machiavelli is one of Rove's favorites. I'm sure Roger Ailes and Limbaugh love him too.) The evil really should be more subtle, as any successful manipulator knows. Romney fortunately is really a boob at this essential GOP quality. Perhaps he hears daddy's voice whenever he tries.

This whole issue is quite disturbing. With regard to tax legislation, our tax codes on the whole are even more disturbing. Everyone is talking about protecting businesses and the middle class, but over 4000 pages of tax codes prohibit both.

“If tax compliance were an industry, it would be one of the largest in the United States,” the report says. “To consume 7.6 billion hours, the ‘tax industry’ requires the equivalent of 3.8 million full-time workers.” (see IRS website - )

With romney's plan, there will be no more mid-class, or poor class. To have a country were only the rich can live will reduce the rest of us, below the poor, and make us slaves. I guess, this religion, is totaly in favor of this. But when you go back in time, Moses, with the help of the creator, freed the people. Now LDS, wants to go back to that erra. How many golden bulls will thay have for us to pray to? Romney' plan to make the country of america a slave country, will not, and can not stand. To promote voter purging, is a crime to all that is right, in this world of our's. Yet the republican are doing just that.

America fought for her freedom in the 1775, against just this sort of doings, from england. I guess we are going to have to do it again, if the republican communist party wins.

The call of "give me liberty, od give me death, will ring true, in our time". The tea party are sumshine solders, who sit on there hands while everyon else fights for freedom. Thay too, want slavery back in america!

The taxes we pay is ours, we paid for it, and it should be for the good of the taxpayer, NOT for the good of the ones that don't pay(like romney). when the rich gets richer, from hook and crook metheds it our place to stop them. Our government, should be working for it voters, not the rich, which republicans are doing. This too has tobe stopped, We voted for them, and thay, work for the money, that paid for their campain.

I feel that, the saying "your vote counts" is false. How can it count, when polititions, only work for the money?and not for the people??????????. How can my vote count, when thay don't work for me, a voter?

On this point, I am leaning more, and more, to beleave that, voting is not only a waist of paper, but a waist of time! How can my vote count, when congress, do nothing for me and my country, as a whole.

On one side, demo', try half heartedly.

On the other side, repo's , want me to be a slave to them.

When will congress, stop this, misuse of their power, and use their power for the good of this country?

Would you keep your business or bring your business to a country that is in a recession and that would keep almost 40% of your PROFITS? Get a clue people we need to offer tax cuts to them to keep them, encourage them to expand and bring them in. We only have 4 AAA business's in the USA, 10 years ago we had 50. United States 2012 tax rate: 39.2% is the highest out there.

I worked in the corporate business world for 30 years and own my own business now. Businesses expand based on demand. No true business person is going to you otherwise. No one hires due to tax rates. They hire when demand increases and people can buy their products or services. Go talk to some that don't have a political ax to grind. They may not like taxes, but they rarely make hiring decisions based on them.

RTFS repeats the obvious but nobody seems to listen.

It works thus: Spending creates demand. Demand creates jobs. So if a person of moderate means gets a few extra bucks in his pocket, he will spend it to get something he needs. If a million persons of moderate means each have a few extra bucks, they buy several million of whatever they need. Spending means they BUY STUFF!

Then, by economic magic, the persons who are hired to meet that demand have these new JOBS!!. And whaddaya think they are going to do with the money they now have that they didn't have before... Probably save some because they know all about those rainy days, but they will HAVE to spend a lot of it for those things they need but couldn't afford until they found a job.

That is the engine that drives the economy and creates JOBS!! Jobs are NOT created by tax breaks to the rich. The rich won't spend their tax savings and they won't invest it. What would they invest in? Nothing other than a business that needs to be created or expanded because of the above-referenced DEMAND. But if there are no such opportunities they will put it away with the rest of their loot and not create a single job.

Seriously mom, how many companies pay anything close to 40%? That has been proven false so many times. I'm surprised anyone brings it up.

If you would search the Internet you would find that we DO pay the most in corporate taxes. Take the time to research before you insult me please. I know several small business owners who are struggling because customers want products and services and a lower price but with having to pay 40% of profits to taxes and still pay for overhead, insurance, supplies and wages they are hard pressed to expand. They all talk about wanting to hire more hands but don't have the money to do so. If you ran your own business RTFS you would understand that workers everywhere are complaining of their companies cutting people not from lack of revenue but because Corporate says they do not have more money to put toward wages after they pay 40% in taxes and all the above I stated for small business. That would make your statement false. How is taxing my brother in law more than he is already fair just because he makes over $200,000 a year. Also why are we giving those tax breaks to just companies not already here? Why not take care of the ones we have as well. Some of your comments are confusing.

Democrats controlled the Senate and the House during the last two years of the Bush administration, held the Presidency and controlled all of Congress for two years of the Obama administration and now control the Presidency and the Senate. There has been ample time and control for the Democrats to do something fiscally responsible. Yet, our nation is in terrible financial condition. The federal debt has grown to over $16 trillion and annual deficits exceed $1 trillion by far. However, the Democrats did narrowly pass Obamacare which will add another trillion in costs in the near term. If interest rates tick up, which they will, each 1% increase in rate will cost us $160 billion in additional interest costs. Even Hilliary Clinton has stated that our massive debt places us in a much weaker position in the world.

Think about this as Obama tours the nation on Air Force One campaigning about minor issues and trying to divide Americans with class warfare. His fiscal irresponsibility has put us in grave danger and to give him another chance to lead our country would be disastrous. Remember, Obama did prepare a budget, however, it was voted down in the Senate 99-0 and in the House 414-0 with not even one Democrat voting for it. Obama has us on the path to become Greece. He has no budget. He has no plans. He has no ideas. He is totally irresponsibile fiscally.

Devdoc - You need to pull your head out --- While technically the Dems had control by numbers - they didn't have enough members to be filibuster proof in the Senate where a lot of bills that the Democrat House passed went to die. Please now your history before spewing republican talking points. Nice try though.

Tax breaks for the rich, now thats rich! How can anyone justify that? The rich are just that, RICH! They do not need more tax cuts/breaks! I, on the other hand, could use a whole lot of tax cuts/breaks. Still, i will go on paying my fair share, as long as i have a job, (Thank you Mr. President) that pays me. I do not mind! That is what being an American is all about! I will always take care of myself, and those "less" fortunate than I. The rich are deffinately NOT "less" fortunate than I!!! What needs to happen, make it impossible for jobs to outsource to other counties! Make all of those corporations, and businesses that have outsourced jobs, pay an extreem amount of taxes for doing business outside the US! Make it not so worth their while to outsource our jobs. Make all of these corporations sitting on their asses, start to hire, pay a fair wage, then you will start to see people buying their products again. We need the job, or we can't pay for your product, dumbasses!

Romney Hood, that says it all, don't it???

                OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 FOR OUR LIVES!!!!

Do some research. He's reducing the tax burden for everyone, not just the poor or rich.

So you think we should make everyone buy and make USA products only and this will fix our problems? You are wrong. It will cause prices on just about everything to rapidly increase. There will no longer be a chance to comparison shop something because supply and demand will be catastrophic. Supplies will dwindle and there will be mass buying when products start to disappear. The place that will be hit hardest is food. Careful what you ask for you may get it and then curse yourself later. Think about all the products you get at a low price because there is competition.

Why would Romney want to give Wealthy people even Lower Taxes who could afford to pay Two million dollars for a rare dime, or one point two million dollars for a comic book, or eight hundred thousand dollars for Steve McQueens wrist watch?????? If these people can spend that kind of money on trash, they sure as Hell don't need any more Tax Breaks. Now Romney may be as educated as one can be, but he seriously lacks Common Sense. Wake the Hell up Romney.

I'm confused, is his tax proposal vauge and secretive and nobody knows what is in it or not. Because if you don't know how could you access all the negative points that are sighted? The truth is you have found what you wanted to say not what you actually know. I'm all for seeking clearification from Romney about the details of how he wants to reform the tax code. But I sure wont make a dicision based on what people are slingging hoping it sticks. But as long as we are exercising good judgement why don't we bag that health care act until we read what was in that bill? Can't we just do the Obama thing and argue the tax code is so bad with should pass anything that is different and work out the details later? The answer should have been no. Lets hold both of these men to the same standard.

                      Self educated,

You really think it helps Obama or the Democrats to say they were only" technically" in charge?Only" technically" leaders? Only" technically" a majority? Obamma is only" technically" the prsident?

If the GOP out smarted the White house at every turn, it means the balance of power was not in support of them. The numbers did give them that power. They did not propose things that even thier whole party could support or it would have passed. It just means the system worked. Just like when all the democrats in congress voted to support the war in Iraq. The president only has the power congress gives them. Including those who choose not to vote, leaving others to lead again. The record is very inconvienient at times. But the system works.

Mitt , I have not made up my mind weather or not I will be voting for you but please answer this question. Why hasn't John McCain come to your defense regarding Harry Reid's comments about your tax paying or lack of tax paying habits. He would have been privy to them in 2008 and it seems to me that you could step on the Democrats throats if what you claim is true. It is just to simple so something is stinking in Denmark as they say. I can't help but feel you somehow feel you are above the masses and we should just believe you. I fear that if you let the month of August slip through your hands you are going to lose and lose bad. Unfortunately the first assertion is usually the one that sicks in peoples mind .We will see or not. Take the high road or prepare to take the other road ,the one that takes you home. PS nobody is interested in Obama's college grades or yours or how many blue ribbons you won on field day or if you were a good speller or chose chocolate milk on Tuesdays .

The simplest thing to do at this point is to prepare for the worst! We have police that resemble the SS of Nazi Germany, Corporate criminals getting monetary rewards- oh, by Bush just to remind the ignorant here-, Unidentifiable enemies and more war in the near future, Rhetoric that has proven to fail, two-party fascists that can't think for themselves, and a mass of people that are, as you can see here, ignorant and fools! The fiat money system we use is corrupt from the outset. It is a private banking firm that borrows us our money! No fiat money system has ever worked. And, you republicans tout freedom and prosperity, yet one look at the news says that we are being controlled by a violent and unethical police apparatus designed not to protect and serve, but to intimidate and violate our freedoms until we no longer have them. It is imperative for those with the eyes to see and the ears to hear to realize that the battle is lost. We have two distinct masses of people, one red and one blue that will follow the pied piper regardless of fact or proof. And, both of these masses will continue to perpetuate disparity and economic ruin. My advice is to avoid the masses at this point as they are zombie in nature, hedonists, narcissists, and anti-social personalities. There is no saving us now. The piper is marching its lemmings to the ocean. So, liberals and conservatives, please hurry to the water and maybe, just maybe, those of us with intelligence and common sense can rebuild our great nation once again. Please hurry!

Romney's plan of giving even MORE Tax breaks to the wealthy is the number one reason he is NOT going to be elected. He has to be Nuts to think that the lower class and those out of work and losing their homes are going to vote for him. Of course the lower Taxes for the wealthy plan would include Romney and Ryan too. Could it be THAT is the reason he wants more tax breaks for the wealthy??

The only way Romney is not going to be elected is for people to get out and VOTE. You can be 110% sure that the TeaPartiers are on the phones right now warming up their base for the the voting booths. That's what they do the best and that's why they get elected. They ensure their own best interests.

                            We've got to ensure ours.

We need to get people back out there and ...............VOTE!
