Romney bus tour fuels VP speculation

WASHINGTON and WOLFEBORO, N.H. -- The veepstakes speculation just got more fuel.

The Romney campaign today officially announced its swing-state bus tour beginning Saturday. It will start in Virginia; then head to North Carolina Sunday, the day the Olympics conclude; Florida Monday, Aug. 13; and end in Ohio Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Potential vice-presidential picks will be making appearances.

NBC's Alex Moe reports that Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) will join Romney on the first leg of the tour in Virginia.

NBC's Andrew Rafferty reports that Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), a veep front runner, will join Romney in Ohio.

*** UPDATE *** Marco Rubio will join Romney on part of the Florida leg of the bus tour.

Today, Romney huddled with top aides, including chief strategist Stu Stevens, and Beth Myers, head of the VP search process, for more than two hours at his lakeside home on Monday. Also present -- senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom and Policy Director Lanhee Chen.

One aide described the meeting as a strategy session, and denied that the vice-presidential selection was discussed.

It's possible a Romney vice-presidential pick is made on the bus tour, but it's also possible that it is designed to create buzz and excitement around the campaign and a VP selection is announced after it.

Do you want to know what I find so insidious about the way that repubs claim:

"Obama wants to talk about anything but the economy"!!

What I find insidious and ridiculous is: IT IS A REPUBLICAN ECONOMY!!

This mess started under George W. Bush for any repub with the stones to admit it. Obama did not CAUSE the current economy. He is just in charge of fixing it. Republicans are running AGAINST THEIR OWN ECONOMY!!!

That is how absurd this thing gets.

You are correct that BO was elected to fix the economy. But remember, he and the Democrats had two years of near total control to pass anything they wanted. In fact BO said that if he didn't have the economy fixed in four years, his presidency would be a one-term proposition. Well, has he fixed the economy?

No one denies that the economy was in a recession when BO took office. But the economy was also in a recession when Reagan took office, arguably a worse recession. And Reagan turned it around and his policies started one of the greatest peace-time expansions in US history. One could argue that aside from a small recession in 1992, we had nearly 20 years of strong growth partly due to Reagan's policies. Under BO we've had the opposite. This recovery is the weakest in US history, and BO had total control of government for two years after his election. The recession may be Bush's fault but the only way to blame this economy on the Republicans is to say the Democrats did nothing in their two years of complete control of DC.

when Reagan was president, the country wasn't as divided and the GOP was more moderate. Politicians were more gracious to the other side and more willing to put country before party. Obviously with the creation of the tea party that makes it utterly impossible for the government to function like the founding fathers envisioned. The "my way or the highway" mentality is no way to govern.

Reagan did not merely cut taxes, he did tax reform. Percentages were cut, but deductions were eliminated to offset the cuts.

    Reagan RAISED taxes 11 times.

Jobs weren't moved overseas on Reagan's watch. He would have been appalled that business has been so willing to move our industries to a communist country. If those jobs were still here, the recovery would have been complete by now.

Having lived in LV for almost 7 years and realizing early that there isn't much done that doesn't generate revenue for casinos and bookies. The odd in LV are that Obama will loose by a very large margin even though he will remain ahead of Romney till the very end. People will wake up and realize that 4 more years of "nothing" isn't worth their voting for the Democrate and the Republicans will already have the House and Senate wraped up. Romney isn't the best choice but he sure is far better than the present person in office and will have a Republican House and Senate to support him. But if Obama did win then the Democrates in 2016 will be totally sweep out. This election will be won with common sense and the lack of that we hope isn't great enough to vote 4 more years of nothing but blame and who does he have to blame?

This report states that the "VPs" might be on the tour because a decision is near, or they might be there to generate excitement. There is another reasons. Maybe Romney simply wants to toss 'em out there, in order to view the resulting public reactions, as so many of his previous campaign decisions and behaviors have fallen flat on their face. Romney is generally not quick off-the-cuff (i.e., does not think things through, assumes that his social stature makes everything that he might say or do "all right", et cetera). With so many embarassments to date, Romney could be scared to make a firm decision at this point in time without first seeing how the media reacts to these "VPs". By the way, I certainly see no VP future for Governor Vagina-Probe of Virginia. Just say'in.

Romney will pick Rubio... Rubio will deliver enough of the latino vote and since all of the black ministers are pissed off at Obama for pandering to Gays about same sex marraige, the black vote wont have as much impact as it did in 2008... This means its GAME OVER for OBAMANOMICS!!!

    Romney 2012!!! YEAH BABY!!!

you felt the need to post that in "bold print"?

there is one main flaw to your Rubio idea "daniel".....Rubio "won't accept"....period!

secondly - you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to "black ministers"!

lastly - Rubio is "cuban-american"....that does not deliver latino/hispanic vote....hispanics are a little touchy when the topic goes to the "cuban - feet dry immigration policy"!

        Dune,

Marco will accept, and he's got enough of a rapport with latinos that he'll certainly be capable of bridging the gap...

Further, regarding your assertion I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to the Black ministers, OK, tell that to your left wing MSNBC... They just hate putting this kind of news where it belongs:

Black pastors group: Obama's support for gay marriage 'might cost him the election'

        By Andrew Mach, NBC News

A group of African-American pastors say that President Barack Obama's backing of gay marriage may cost him the election due to weakening support among black voters -- although he still has overwhelming support from them.

        Follow @NBCNewsUS

Rev. William Owens, head of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, a group of black Christians backing traditional family values, said Obama has taken the black vote for granted.

"He has not done a smart thing and it might cost him the election," Owens said during a press conference Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington. "There are more people that want marriage to be right than there are homosexuals."

Although Owens declared that "we are not Democrats, we are not Republicans, this is not a political party," Owens criticized the president for not denouncing gay marriage. He said the press conference was held to promote the group's Mandate for Marriage, a pledge to support marriage between one man and one woman – what Owens says will be a national campaign aimed at rallying black Americans to rethink their support of the president.

Obama won 95 percent of the black vote in 2008, and while enthusiasm among some Obama supporters has faded since then, support for America's first black president remains high among African Americans. In a recent Associated Press-GfK poll, 82 percent of black registered voters say they would vote for Obama. His approval rating among blacks was 87 percent.

The group's press conference was held just one day after Rep. Barney Frank confirmed that the Democratic Party is set to include a pro-gay marriage plank in their party-convention platform. The platform, approved unanimously on Sunday, not only backs marriage equality, but also rejects DOMA and has positive language with regard to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The move wasn't a complete surprise, considering Obama's public endorsement of same-sex marriage in May.

Owens, who said he supported Obama in 2008, said that the president "has ignored the black community because he thinks we are in his pocket because he's black. We refuse to give him a pass."

At the press conference, Owens was joined by five other black pastors and said there were 3,742 African-American pastors on board for the anti-Obama campaign. Owens has long been an opponent of gay marriage and consults with the National Organization for Marriage as a liaison to black churches.

Later in his speech, he denounced the administration's priorities.

"With all the challenges facing the African-American community – the prisons are full of African-American men – they have chosen to cater to the homosexual community," Owens said. "They have chosen to cater to Hollywood, to cater to big money, and to ignore the people who put the president where he is."

Supreme Court asked to back gay marriage ban

A Pew Research Center poll conducted in April found that 49 percent of African-Americans oppose legalized same-sex marriage, compared with 39 percent who support it. In 2008, only 26 percent of blacks were in favor of same-sex marriage, according to the same Pew poll.

In a Public Religion Research Institute poll released last week, 18 percent of black Americans surveyed said they see same-sex marriage as a "critical issue," putting it behind the economy, education, deficit, a growing wealth gap and immigration.

Owens, however, said the president's stance on gay marriage will be a much more decisive issue for his organization come Election Day.

"The president is in the White House because of the Civil Rights movement," said Owens. "I didn't march one inch, one foot, one yard for a man to marry a man and a woman to marry a woman. We will not take it back, we will not back down, and we are going to take action across this country."

Rubio will never accept - period!

You can write all the words you want - he will not accept! It is a lose/lose proposition for him!

As for the black ministers - they are entitled to be disappointed - but when it comes time to pull the lever they will not vote for a Republican whose Party does not have their best interest at heart...

Kind of like all the Repubs who are still vocal with their displeasure of Romney as the nominee - does this mean they will vote for Obama....not likely.

It is easy enough Daniel....we should know within the week!

Credit Card, Fibbing about his family's immigration, family arrived legally before Castro took power. I'll tell you another well known secret, most Hispanics don't like Cubans just ask any Puerto Rican or Mexican American, they think Cubans are arrogant, and condescending. Nice try. I don't see any Black Pastors running to Romney, Romney's reception at the NAACP should give you an indication where they stand, regardless of his bused in shills. How about those Tax Returns

Sorry, Danny, but Rubio would be a very poor choice for Mitt. Unpopular among Latinos, still hurting from ethics issues, and most of all, he has Mormon roots.

It shouldn't surprise anyone here that Daniel himself is a Mormon, which is why he continues to float Rubio.

This raises once again the lingering issue of whether Mormons are loyal to faith before country. Kennedy, fifty years ago, was a devout Catholic who made the choice to declare publicly that country came first.

If asked, would Mitt say the same?

I, for one, do NOT want anyone as President whose loyalty is to religion first.

With all the uproar over Romney's tax returns has anyone ever thought that the IRS has ears, eyes, a TV, a radio, so would they not audit him now if it was true he had not paid taxes or filed returns etc. Another thing is that he has money in over seas account----------so do almost all senators, legislatures etc. They made the law to make it legal to put money in overseas accounts.

Now to Obama and his college transcripts. Since no one can prove a legitimate birth certificate (although since you must be a natural born citizen to be President, I think everyone should have to prove this before even running for the office), His college transcripts are the next thing to go after because most likely he received aid or loans to go to school claiming he was a nationality other than AMERICAN. His books that he wrote states he was born in Kenya but now he claims he was born in Hawaii. I know (I've written books and proofed them for others) that the publicist writes the information about the author.............BUT ONLY WITH THE AUTHORS APPROVAL!!

You should have stopped after the first paragraph - then you wouldn't be looking so foolish, stupid, ignorant, etc etc.

Using the logic of your first paragraph - if Obama wasn't born in the US, wouldn't Boehner, McConnel, Cantor, etc etc have led the fight? Would any reasoning, logical, intelligent person stop looking if there was something there? No - so that kinda' labels you, doesn't it? Wacko. Sh!t for brains.

Your past that you will not even talk about of - MA Gov liberal and poor economic policies that is your only gov experience to judge, Clandestine Work at Bain dismantleing American jobs to make a buck, Personal Income Tax History that hides your unpatriotic side and treasure chest full of questions on who you really invest in, and maybe even some 2002 Olympics scandals and business dirt coming soon. You can run in the bus but you can't hide...although now that you are on a bus you can throw as many of your old buddies under it as you can and want to now.

It'll be the Governor of VA. He has done a great job there, has govt. executive experience and will be ready if he is ever needed to step into the top spot, and is clean as a whistle.

Would love to see Rubio on the ticket but he'll get nothing but flak from Obama on the govt. charge card misuse in FL, for which no wrongdoing was found so far as ethics go and he reimbursed that which should not have been used, something like $6000 or something.

Gov. Pawlenty has the record and the smarts but he is too low-key.

Congressmen don't pass the ready to step up as an executive test - they live in a deliberative body.

Senator Portman is safe but nonetheless I think a Governor is best on the ticket.

A few of the women we have as sitting Governors are terrific but they need to fill out at least one term first, preferably two, before stepping up.

Gov. Christy is out by his choosing - he is waiting for bigger and better career moves.

Just my opinion. I just feel Gov. McDonnell makes the most sense.

Now doesnt that sound and appear to be a person with the integrity and TRUST to become the head of a Country that he could honestly say he loves ,especially after all the goodies he has gotten came form the education and opportunities of said country. As for the betting odds, they haven't changed much either. We're basically waiting for the VP announcement to see the next change in the odds to be the next U.S. President. But, for now, the Democrats and Obama hold a firm lead over the Republicans and it's not even close... Right now, a $1 bet on the Dems only pays $.59 versus a $1 bet on the Republicans that would pay $1.40. Keep checking back for more election odds updates as they become available.

The democratic party has evolved over the years from the true party of the working Americans who help build the United States to a party of leftist radicals, ignorant to the facts of what works to keep America strong, it's like a rotten apple fell in with'em and it spoiled the whole crate. I don't think Bush #2 was that great of a president, but along side of obama, Bush is head and shoulders above him. Where did obama come from in terms of his political views, because they sure sound like the views of a foreigner, with all his reteric about sharing the wealth and you didn't build that by your self. Plus all the lies about what he was going to do when he became president, and how he fooled a lot of voters with those lies. All I can say is I don't think you can fool the voters twice.

There are two candidates one who wants to rebuild the middle class and grow the economy by promoting jobs in alternative energy and high tech and Mitt who wants to give banks, big business, and rich people more money. We've had enough trickle down economics and ridiculous supply theories that hark-en back to Says Law which has been proved false. No, supply doesn't create its own demand. The Republican agenda is all about the 1% and if you care about jobs and increasing employment, the Democrats have historically had more success by increasing aggregate demand which only works by employing more people and giving them money to spend, through full employment.

Romney doesn't even want you to know how much tax he pays. If he has nothing to hide why must he hide his income? What is he embarrased to show the citizenry? Why does he believe he needs to be an exception to the standard 6 year disclosure precedent presidential candidates have followed for the last 40 years? He feels this way, because he is a 1%er and all the rules do not apply to him. Let's just say NO. No how no way not ever! Finally, a Nancy Reagan saying in a context that makes sense.
