Well, we agree on something; "America ain't that stupid". Check out Nate Silver at 538. In case you don't know who Mr. Silver is, he runs a blog that called the 2008 race dead-on. Right now he has Obama's electoral college total at 301 and Romney at 237. And, he has Obama's chances of winning at 72.4% and Romney's at 27.6%. Granted, it's only August and the election isn't until November, but Mr Silver's accuracy can not be denied.

How many times have you read a news story that cites an unnamed source? Not really very unusual. By the way, Sen. Reid did say that he could not be sure that the story about Romney was true. How many conservative elected officials that say that President Obama is Muslim say that they "can't be sure?" None that I know of.

The Republican witch hunters are not interested in finding out what happened in the Fast and Furious investigation because they already know that it was not an intentional gun-walking operation. They know what really happened was that the ATF couldn't arrest the straw purchasers because the lax gun laws in Arizona gave them no legal basis for any arrests. So rather than investigating what happened BEFORE the guns got away, they want to investigate what the Obama administration did AFTER the incident happened to see if they can dig up some dirt.

As for college transcripts, Mitt Romney hasn't released his, either.

Enough of that though, I think the whole low tax argument is bunk from the get-go. Why are low taxes good for the economy as a whole? Dhat low taxes, like 13.9% or 8% or whatever Romney paid over the last 10 years do is incentivize taking your money, and then taking it out of the country and hiding it. If Romney's tax rate was 40%, he's work his a$$ off finding a place to invest his income so that it wouldn't be taxable. How's that? Can you say "Job creation"? No one ever makes this argument, but at 40% tax rate, no one is going to just say, OK, sure I'll pay that, no problem. At 10%, they might. 40%, 50% no way! they'll HIRE someone to make them more money--in turn avoiding tax by creating the expense of an employee. Guess what? The employee benfits too! Why do you think the middle class grew from the 1940s to 1980? There were more incentives to reinvest. Right now, with low taxes and low capital gains, what's the incentive to reinvest? Why not keep your money, cash out and send it to the Caymans?

When hiring somebody comes with a 40% discount (avoided taxes), hiring makes sense. It's cheap. No tax? No discount. Hiring is expensive. Somebody explain what's wrong with that logic.

Chris Matthews has stated several times that if Romney's tax return information is not as bad as people think he would release them. Sounds about right to me.

For the past two years the Republicans have controlled the House of Representatives. They have used that majority to oppose President Obama on virtually every jobs bill, then have the audacity to criticize him by saying his programs have not worked. Instead of cooperating to help the economy and create jobs, John Boehner, Eric Cantor and the rest of that fool's parade spend all of their time trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (three dozen times, so far) or passing anti-woman legislation that they know doesn't have a chance of either passing the Senate or surviving the inevitable veto (because President Obama actually believes in women's rights).

Done: as you know, our tax system is broken beyond repair. The tax code makes no sense and is full of loopholes. Accountants tell me that everybodys tax returns can be construde as wrong especially with all the conflicting laws. Just like news sources, returns can be "spun" to be right or wrong depending on the obsevers agenda. There is no right or wrong in our current tax code, the rules can be manipulated to be both right and wrong at the same time. The argument further detracts from real issues like the economy. A better system would be a flat tax; no gimmicks, no loopholes, no deductions, no accountants. Everybody pays, everybody has 'skin in the game".

What I think is that this is a Trojan Horse. The leak is out there so that Romney can release information that says he paid 8% one year and 12% another year, or maybe 1% one year--maybe even zero, but not ten years of zero. SEE, I PAID TAXES! The fact that 8%, 12% and 1% are larger than zero debunks Reid, plus ANY number larger than zero looks good in that context! 1% for a guy worth hundreds of millions is ridiculous, but who's paying attention then?--the camera is on Harry Reid who is either a liar or a fool.

We know with certainty that Romney paid less than a 13.9% tax rate for all the years other than 2010 and 2011. How low, perhaps zero, and for how many years is all that is unproven. And if/when voters learn how little Romney has paid, or worse how he (and the richest 1%) managed this, along with the huge amount in his IRA, etc., it will be enough to tank him.

The different between the swift boat lies and Reid's claim is that one can easily be proven false (Kerry was an actual war hero). The claim about Romney can also be proven to be false - with a release of the tax records. But that might also confirm the claim... And surely Reid would not have had one of his aides take a look at the IRS records (as he would have the right - as Senate Majority Leader). After all - he wanted to make sure that Romney did not break the law.

I am also confused - why are the right wing not complaining about the son of an illegal immigrant running for president? Romney's father was born in Mexico - and he did not nationalize. So - he must have been an illegal immigrant. Yet the republicans demand that US children of illegals not have the same rights as 'real' americans. Why the double standard???

Ridiculous charge. "Fast and furious" was a program originated during the Bush administration and was not even on Holder's or Obama's radar until the program failure occurred.

don - Again with the left wing talking points. "Fast and Furious" was a program started after Obama took Office, in fact started on or about Oct 26, 2009. (You might be thinking of "guns walking" or something similiar). Bust "Fast and Furious" was on Obama's watch. The fact Holder and Obama claim they didn't know is no excuse. Excellent post! It's a shame that more people asking those kinds of questions from Obama as they are salivating over Romney's tax return. It's a wonder why the looney left would believe something coming out Reid's mouth!

Nienteen days ago the Huffington Post ran a story that showed that Romney has not yet fully released ANY tax return for ANY tax year. So far he has released most of his 2010 tax return, but not all of it, as he has yet to release to public scrutiny an IRS tax form required of holders of offshore bank and investment accounts in countries that do not report such holdings to the IRS.

The name of the missing form is the Report on Foreign Bank and Investment Accounts, or "FBAR" in tax accountant slang. Without this form, we Americans are still in the dark about Romney's overseas investment holdings, which have obviously been established to avoid our Federal tax code.

Federal election law requires that a Presidential candidate FULLY release their last two years of tax returns, and Romney is in contempt of that law. Romney has said that releasing the missing tax form would be ruinous to his campaign, and has refused a legal request to do so.

Because Mitt is in contempt of Federal election law, is he even legally running for President?

My suspicion, purely speculation mind you, is that Mr. Romney is one of the several thousand wealthy Americans with off-shore accounts who voluntarily settled with the IRS last year -- in the much-publicized off-shore tax cheat crack-down by the IRS which is said to have netted Billion$ of dollars in back taxes, penalties and interest from those tax cheats in return for avoidance of Federal prosecution for tax evasion.

It's my understanding from what I have read that those settlements included a guarantee of anonymity and confidentiality from the Federal government. But if Romney were to release his own tax records -- for any years which included such settlements with the IRS to avoid prosecutioin for tax evasion -- he himself would break the confidentiality. If there was such a deal to avoid prosecution, Mr. Romney is politically 'toast' ... and should be. I sense a mass defection of delegates and a brokered Republican convention coming.

Mr. Romney needs to answer Sen. Reid's allegation immediately, if not sooner, in the only way he can to disprove the allegation. He needs to release his tax returns, or the questions .. and countless other inferences and suspicions such as mine will merely grow, and grow and become more and more serious between now and the election. If Mr. omney let's suspicions linger, Independants will turn away from him in droves. and he cannot win without the votes of Independants.

It's interesting that Romney, during his campaign for governor of Massachusetts, initially refused to release information from his tax returns when the opposition claimed he did not file taxes in their state, claiming to be a resident of Utah, so was ineligible to be their governor. Our dear Nancy never went to law school so she has no idea what "hearsay" is, and is obviously unfamiliar with a not so recent poll that the vast majority of the American People (those with brains) believe that statements attributed to "unnamed sources" or "sources that do not wish to be identified" are contrived. I could easily say, for example, that an "unnamed source" told me that both Pelosi and Reid have been taking bribes from the AFL-CIO for years. According to Pelosi that would be a "fact" because that is what some "unnamed source" told me. That, of course, assumes you believe me when I say that this "unnamed source" even exists.

Here is a fact that doesn't rely upon an "unnamed source": "In November 2011, 60 Minutes alleged that Pelosi and several other member of Congress had used information they gleaned from closed sessions to make money on the stock market..." (Wikipedia)

BTW: Reid's alleged "unknown source", who I truly doubt exists, would have to be within the IRS in order to go back 10 years. The "unknown source" would have to do this through the computer bank and enter a personal identification code to gain access. So once Reid says there is an "unknown source", if one really exists, he has outed the source, which is something that a "source" in such a position would not dare risk. It is really easy to see who had recently accessed such information.

Here's a quick analysis as to why this is generating and dominating the talk.

Romney's main premise is to cut taxes for those "job creators"(which he is not BUT will as well as others that don't create jobs benefit from) and reduce regulations while doing away with tax breaks that really help the middle and lower class to pay for them. If he didn't pay taxes, that will crush his current agenda for cutting taxes. It also won't help the economy either. If he was able to enjoy such luxuries as getting away with paying taxes due to the current tax code he will (and should) seem Un-American in my opinion not only to those Tea Party and conservatives that currently back him and will make the case that what is his real agenda if he is elected president? Will it be to put in place a tax code that will allow the 1% to get away with paying taxes entirely like he did?

I know it may be a far stretch but seriously think about it and how that will affect not only the economy but jobs as well......How many more jobs will be shipped overseas so that those coroporations can save more money due to the relaxed regulations? How many of the "working poor" will be willing to accept a pay cut(again) in order to keep their job? Again this does not help the economy as it will take money that people use to buy necessities out of their pockets which in turn will create a downturn in the demand of goods and will probably will force some businesses out of business thus job loss and here we go all over again......

Like it or not, this is a serious issue that must be addressed as it goes to his credibility to create those "12 million" jobs he claimed the other day as well as his "true" business nature that we all know so well with his association with Bain.

The thought that someone that makes less then someone else does not pay a lower tax. If you know how our tax bracket works in the US then they would know Harry Reid and Obama are just trying to district the American people from the failed policies of the Obama administration. In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

Back in December of 1996, Jane Akre and her husband, Steve Wilson, were hired by FOX as a part of the Fox “Investigators” team at WTVT in Tampa Bay, Florida. In 1997 the team began work on a story about bovine growth hormone (BGH), a controversial substance manufactured by Monsanto Corporation. The couple produced a four-part series revealing that there were many health risks related to BGH and that Florida supermarket chains did little to avoid selling milk from cows treated with the hormone, despite assuring customers otherwise.

According to Akre and Wilson, the station was initially very excited about the series. But within a week, Fox executives and their attorneys wanted the reporters to use statements from Monsanto representatives that the reporters knew were false and to make other revisions to the story that were in direct conflict with the facts. Fox editors then tried to force Akre and Wilson to continue to produce the distorted story. When they refused and threatened to report Fox's actions to the FCC, they were both fired.(Project Censored #12 1997)

Akre and Wilson sued the Fox station and on August 18, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre was wrongfully fired by Fox Television when she refused to broadcast (in the jury's words) “a false, distorted or slanted story” about the widespread use of BGH in dairy cows. They further maintained that she deserved protection under Florida's whistle blower law. Akre was awarded a $425,000 settlement. Inexplicably, however, the court decided that Steve Wilson, her partner in the case, was ruled not wronged by the same actions taken by FOX.

FOX appealed the case, and on February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre’s threat to report the station’s actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida’s whistle blower statute, because Florida’s whistle blower law states that an employer must violate an adopted “law, rule, or regulation." In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a "law, rule, or regulation," it was simply a "policy." Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so. After the appeal verdict WTVT general manager Bob Linger commented, “It’s vindication for WTVT, and we’re very pleased… It’s the case we’ve been making for two years. She never had a legal claim.”

Mitt is also found of quoting the advice his father gave him about politics. Well, George Romney set the precedent by being transparent and releasing many years of his tax forms when he ran for president. Why won't Mitt do the same?

In 2008, when he was being vetted for the VP nomination, Romney turned over 23 years of tax records to the Republican party. For the US public, however, he won't share more than 2 years. Why?

I didn't really make much of this until Mitt Romney dug in his heels and refused to release any tax records. Now I, at least, am convinced he is hiding something.

I think this issue will not go away until Romney issues copies of his tax returns. Not wanting to put them out, when his own father set the standard, really makes everyone ask, why not ?

I still can't figure out how the current president gets all the blame for the increase debt that accumulated between 2000 and 2008 and the severity of the problem was kept mostly hidden until after the 2008 election; or how one person can be blamed for following through on the previous administrations steps to save the banking industry. I truly believe if we had allowed the collapse of our banking and auto industry, our unemployment would be closer to 25% and we would all be much, much worse off today. History could have repeated itself folks, go back and see what happened from 1929 through 1939. There are many lessons to be learned.

The President finally released his offical birth certificate after years of people wanting to see it. Speaking of birth certificates, how come there wasn't a big clamour over John McCain's birth certificate after all he was born in Panama, not the US? (not that it mattered because he was born to US citizens as was the president.)

That said, why won't Mr. Romney release his taxes? What is he hiding? The sooner he does, the sooner this will be put behind him, or at least give him a little while for damage control before the election. Or maybe, if he does, it guarantees he won't be elected.

I would also like to see what lies beneath Donald Trump's hair, but that's another story for another time.

I would bet if there was anything there that Romney felt would help his campaign, he would have released them a long time ago.

Just a quick note in response to the comment "where are Reid's and Pelosi's tax returns?" I believe that most elected or appointed officials are required to submit their taxes each year for review. However, that's only after your are elected or appointed. All high ranking government officials are also required to declare their income and earnings, at least they did 15 years ago, that may have changed.

So to recap: The Romneys have released exactly one return - 2010. Almost four months after it was due, they still haven't finished up 2011's, and in their own words, are still weeks away from doing so. And yet the Romney website itself tells you in no uncertain terms that "Governor Romney’s tax returns show" all of the above vaguely nice stuff.

Hey, maybe it's just me, but it it was MY website and I was so proud of being such a fine upstanding citizen and humanitarian, I'd have every last detail out there for all the world to see. It’s wrong." And his voice gets louder in that hyperventilating way, with such indignant "thou dost protest too much" reaction.

Romney was asked directly if there was ever a time when he paid less than a 13.9% tax rate. He did that fake hehehe laugh he always does when he is cornered about his finances. Chris Hayes made a very insightful observation. He said that when the rich become above reproach in a society, it is a sign the country is in decline. For example Greece, where folks, especially the rich weren't paying taxes at all. Another point made on his program is family values are hard hit by declining wages, because men can no longer support a family. If the religious-Right really cares about traditional marriage, they should support organized labor to get wages back up, tax credits for jobs created here—especially good-paying jobs.

That's BS. Despite the premeditated lock-step obstruction by Teapublicans, President Obama has created more jobs so far in his first term than Dubya did during both of his terms combined. But most importantly is rejection of failed voodoo Reaganomics versus Keynesian economics, and we can look at the last 30-40 years and see clearly that the GOP/Bush-era policies are an Epic Fail.

Top that off with the Tax Policy Center showing how disastrous Romney's plan would be (and the CBO regarding Paul Ryan's) in that they would put those failed policies on steroids, and the "Race to the Bottom" nightmare of the rightwing Teabaggers -- Clinton sums it up well:

I don't want to see any of Mitt Romney's federal tax returns as much as Romney wants to keep them ALL secret. Yes, all of them. He has to date released part of his 2010 federal tax return. What's missing? Some of the schedules, including the one with the madatory FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report) form. At this point I have no reason to disbelieve Harry Reid's assertion that Romeny paid no federal income taxes for ten years.

Rpmney has NOT denied that he paid no federal income taxes for ten years. He stated that Harry Reid was lying (but did not say Reid was lying about this particular assertion) and that he'd paid lot of taxes. Be advised that even the working Americans who don't pay federal income taxes (because their income is too low) pay lots of taxes as well - property taxes, sales taxes, fuel tax, various federal, state, and local taxes, as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes. (Romney, since he makes money from investments rather than actual work, doesn't pay the last two.)

Senator Reid has made a ridiculous unsubstantiated accusation. As a result, he and the President have lost credibility with many in this country.

In both a Senate floor speech and in conversation with Nevada reporters, Reid said he had it on good authority that the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate had paid no taxes, a claim he attributed in a Huffington Post interview to a Bain investor.

"I am not basing this on some figment of my imagination," Reid told Nevada reporters Wednesday. "I have had a number of people tell me that." But he would not expand on his sources. Even if it is not true the Romney paid zero in taxes for as much as ten years, the smoke where there's fire is that Romney definitely paid less than a 13.9% tax rate for most years, and perhaps zero for at least one year. And that's all that needs to be in those returns to tank Romney, and everyone including Team Romney knows it -- Especially after he has lied about it yet again.

I was just pointing out that both sides should release more. What do you think they have to hide? I think Romney's tax return will show that he has lived a much different life than most people. It will show that Mitt did everything he could to pay as little taxes as he could. It is called tax avoidance (not tax evasion) One is legal and one is not. Then the left will beat him up saying he should have paid more taxes. Most people who are really rich have very complicated returns. Even most IRS agents would not agree on what is the most proper way to do their returns. Most of the supper, supper rich have taken the issue to court. The tax code is not always cristal clear.

I think it is wise to do all you can to minimize your tax liability. The government waists so much money. I think most of our money could be put to better use. I would be all for changing that tax code. We need a much simpler tax code. Like a flat tax. Then everyone would pay their fair share.

Actually, I wouldn't invest money with either of them. I wouldn't invest money with Obama because he's a lawyer, not a financial expert. I wouldn't invest money with Romney because I have morals and there are some things I won't do to make money, including intentionally shorting employee pension plans to pay myself more money and allowing Medicare fraud to occur. Clinton was president from 1993-2001, if his first tax return that he released was 1992, how many tax returns did Clinton release when he was running for president? The answer is 1, and that is when he was a candidate. Which is all most release, and not the "at least 5" like SeekingSanity claims.

The prior 3 years became the foundation of the White Water case in 1993 when the Clinton's were finally coaxed to come clean on Hillary's financial dealings. They've released returns ever since. The middle class was destroyed by Bill Clinton when he signed NAFTA into law. No other trade agreement ever signed by a president has cost this country more jobs then NAFTA. It didn't happen overnight, but millions of jobs mostly middle class left this country as a result. Romney left to run Olympics in 1999 on a leave of absence. Then in 2002 after Bain made bankrupting companies it's new enrichment strategy he decided to retroactively resign back to 1999 even though he was still CEO and sole owner. How do you retroactively resign from a solely owned company?

Bain Capital is not "Solely owned" as you claim. It is a Corporation, Romney remained as chairman, his CEO duties were assigned to the President of Bain. Any corporation can provide SEC filings but that does not mean that person runs the day to day operation, Which Romney did not do after the Olympics. If in fact the anonymous Bain investor (whom Romney should be able to track down) ratted out Romney's tax returns to Harry Reid, then the Bain source is telling the truth or lying. So the RNC is blaming the wrong man as a prevaricator.

Sen. Reid can't disclose the name of a source speaking on condition of anonymity, any more than a reporter can. If he did, nobody would ever trust him to keep their identities secret. His sources would dry up, just like anyone in the media. I don't know whether it's true, but Reid was probably told the information by a source. The question is whether his source was being accurate or not.

It is probably safe to say that Harry Reid did get a phone call. Most likely from someone like David Axelrod, who told Reid he heard Romney hasn't paid taxes for 10 years. Of course Reid is going to consider Axelrod a reliable source, after all they are friends. So the call to Reid is probably true, with the only embellishment on Reid's part being that he claims it came from a former Bain employee.

When you put Reid, arguably one of the most corrupt politicians in Washington out in front on an issue with an anonymous source, people just will not believe this story. I guess the Obama campaign just couldn't find a member of the Democratic Party with honesty and integrity to go on record knowingly telling a lie. Your reasoning is very flawed -- this was never a rumor. Reid made the charge that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years based on what he said he was told by an unidentified person. Romney says that's not true. It's the responsibility of the accuser to provide the evidence supporting the charge and Reid hasn't done so.

I think we all know what's at play here. The Democrats want those tax returns so they can yell about Romney's low effective tax rate -- a rich guy only paying XX% of his income in federal taxes when it should be so much more. It's just not fair!! Boo Hoo Hoo!!
