Subscribe to RSSCINCINNATI, Ohio -- Vice presidential nominee or not, Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) will not be relying on an iPhone app to find out the fate of his political future.
Thought to be on Mitt Romney's VP shortlist, the Ohio senator told reporters on Saturday that he still has not downloaded the mobile phone application that promises to inform users of the pick "before the press and just about everyone else (except maybe Ann)." He first revealed on Thursday that he did not have the app, and that seems to have remained unchanged over the past 48 hours.
"I haven't actually gotten the app myself. I have an iPad all full of apps, half of which I never get time to use anyway. But we'll see," he said. "I assume I'll hear it other ways."
He told a local Cincinnati news station, "I imagine that's not how they probably would communicate it to me, but who knows."
His disinterest in the app is in contrast with the Romney campaign and at least one other potential VP shortlister. Along with campaign staffers, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been promoting the technology through twitter.
It would be hard to argue that Portman has not already earned a phone call or face-to-face meeting with the Romney campaign to find out the news. He attended volunteer appreciation events at two Romney Victory offices on Saturday as part of the "Buckeye Blitz" happening throughout the state. It's just the latest in a long line of events he's done in his home state on behalf of the presumptive nominee.
Asked what his responsibilities might be if chosen as Romney's No. 2, Portman said, "I would work very hard for Mitt Romney, but that's what I'm doing anyway."
That certainly will remain true at the beginning of this week when the Cincinnati native travels to the northeast part of the state to stump for the former governor. And while Congress is on its August recess he also plans to travel out of state to campaign for Romney as well.

Just another Romney false statement! The law suit is to RESTORE early voting FOR ALL during the 3 days prior to Election Day that was eliminated by the Republican controlled legislature and Governor Kasich earlier this year.
This is just one more example of how disconnected Mitt Romney is with what is really going on around him.
To take Mitt’s position against the law suit would be to keep our service men and women from voting while home on leave when they have to depart from home and return to their duty station before Election Day.
Romney's spokesman, Ryan Williams, in an interview Saturday could point to no place in Obama’s lawsuit that seeks to restrict the rights of military voters.

Hi Dennis - I'm not from Ohio so don't really have a lot of facts on the law suit. However, it is my understanding that the States set the election laws, and not the federal government. The federal government's role is to make sure no one is denied the right to vote based on laws not consistent with the Voting Rights Act. I don't see where this Ohio law is denying anyone a right to vote, it just gives military personnel 3 more days than others. It appears the law suit by the Obama Administration is saying if EVERYONE doesn't get the extra 3 days then the military shouldn't either.
One question, does the extra 3 days for military personnel apply to those overseas or regardless of where they are stationed? If it pertains to military personnel currently residing in the State of Ohio then it should also apply to all Ohio residents. I believe voting laws for military personnel overseas are covered by federal law and not state law, ( thanks to Al Gore going to court to discount military absentee ballots because of no post mark date.)

The current law allows instate military to vote in-person during the last 3 days but not non-military registered voters.
Instate military should not be considered any different than other Ohio residents. It is not any different than a Federal, State employee or an ordinary civilian voter.
There is no intent by anyone to restrict avalibility to vote to anybody, military or non-military.
I believe overseas military personnel are allowed several extra days for their ballot to arrive – I think it is 10 days in the Federal law.

It is my understanding that military voter disenfranchisement is a serious problem, sinking to the shocking point of 2010 when only 5% of the military participated.

Obama certainly makes accomodations to law as a regular course of action, be it issuing waivers to ACA for his union base and corporate sponsors ... to refusing to enforce DOMA laws ... to waiving enforcement of immigration law ... to suing states trying to rightfully clean their outdated voter registration rolls.
No American is more worthy of an accomodation than those, that through their service and sacrifice, provide and ensure that very right to vote.
It would normally be simply stunning for an administration that seems interested in providing an opportunity for voter fraud by its challenges to states voter laws and practices, to restrict the most noble and worthy - the military voter's ability to vote, but this is life under the political animal Obama ...
And afterall ... it is an election year and it is against a group that overwhelming votes against him .... and it is in a critical swing state.

The lawsuit would NOT reduce the access to voting for anyone especially the military.
All the lawsuit does is to seek to open up the same access to all voters – the same as it was prior to the change in the law earlier this year.
Military working in Ohio, like the thousands that work/stationed at Wright Patterson AFB outside Dayton mostly work 8-5, M-F like most other workers in Ohio and they have absolutely no additional hardships getting to the poll than anyone else.

A new survey of American suburban and swing voters by Hofstra University's National Center for Suburban Studies demonstrates just how mainstream the progressive vision for the country on the role of government really is. On issues of income inequality, the social contract, government regulation of industry for health and safety of the public, these swing voters demonstrate that, while they don't like these concepts in the abstract, they support the specific programs at issue, and want to keep them strong. This plays into the larger narrative that's at the heart of this campaign and the competing visions for what the role of government in our daily lives should be, and how Democrats and progressives should be presenting that vision.
The survey was designed and executed by Princeton, and was conducted in mid-June with telephone interviews in English and Spanish with 1,532 adults age 18 or older. It oversampled surburban voters, including 1,005 of them. At the core of this discussion, shaping all other opinions in it, is the fact that this is a group of Americans that has been hit particularly hard by the recession.
Voters aren't going to think Democrats are being irresponsible spendthrifts, they're going to think Democrats are living up to all their talk about standing up for the little guy, about caring first and foremost about middle-class America. Just do it, Democrats, protect these programs and tax the rich to do it. It's not just a popular policy to follow, it's the responsible one.

One thing TC and others like him don't understand is that if you were to equalize everything today so that everyone has the exact same amount of money, all you have to do is wait one year and those that had it will have it again and those that don't won't. Also, if you were to rely on those who aren't successful in business to run everything, then the only equality would be that of poverty. I think it must be the wiring in the brains of libs that doesn't permit them to understand that the reason they are as well off as they are is that successful people pull them up. I'm sure they'll laugh at that, but let's face it, where else in the world are the "poor" living in homes or apartments with dvd players, internet, cable TV, microwaves, etc.? And all these things were made with labor giving higher wages to the workers than they otherwise would have received.
The fact is that the only reason to punish the "rich" (ie: anyone making more money than you) is to give you 15 seconds of gloating, but it won't do a damn thing to help your situation.

We have health care here, but I haven't seen a doctor in over a year. I am retired and earned my retirement. Even then I am not taking advantage of all the benefits offered to retirees. I've paid my dues through the years and the difference between you and me is that I don't automatically accuse those that haven't had all the benefits in life that I have had, of being moochers. I don't begrudge those less fortunate their health care and whatever else my country provides. Of course we have a few among us that take advantage of the "system", but you get that in every society, not just "socialist" societies.

seeking sanity: Please list all of Obama's policies that seek to help the economy grow. Is it the higher taxes on those who create jobs? I'm sure that people who find themselves with less money in their pockets are likely to hire more people! Is it the increased regulations on the coal industry that effectively is shutting it down, as Obama campaigned to do? Is it the stopping the Keystone Pipeline? Is it the moratorium on drilling? Is it the paying health care providers less money? Is it spending almost a trillion dollars for all those "well, I guess those jobs weren't as shovel ready as we thought (chuckle, chuckle)?
I can understand why you are seeking sanity when you look to government for answers. Let me give you the best advise you've ever received: Stop looking to government for answers and you will begin to find sanity. You'll certainly find prosperity!

Seeking, the saddest thing is they just don't have a candidate out there with a thought or a plan. Mitt "looks" presidential, kind of like a Ken-doll president and just about as plastic. The GOP has wrapped him up in such a pretty redo of GWB it's hysterical. And now, instead of answering any type of question he just refuses to answer. You know I live in Utah and this morning's Salt Lake Trib's front page story was reminding Mitt that he did NOT build the SLC Olympics. The people of Utah are just a wee bit pissed at his claiming he did!
Layton - Mitt's negative numbers keep going up - his positive down. On one of the Sunday morning shows one of the guests was asked a question and they stated that Mitt would win- this isn't a popularity contest. The moderator laughed and said, are you kidding? You think the country will elect a President they don't like? Then he talked about Mitt's negative numbers going up. I think it is very telling. (I was switching between two shows and forget which one it was - although both talked about Mitt's negativity!)
It's pretty sad the GOP could only come up with this empty shell of a man. From what I understand, his father was a very good man. He'd be so disappointed his son turned out to be the joke he is.

Please tell me Portman's attributes. I live in Ohio and I haven't seen him do anything. What jobs has he saved here? He just seems to follow republicans around and do nothing. He rarely comes to Northeast Ohio, and when he does it is to support Romney. He has not done much for his own state. I don't see him doing much for the country.
pis - I can't talk about Portman as I really don't know much. However, the fact that you live in the state and can't say much about him pretty much says it all.
I do know the auto industry has created a lot of jobs in Ohio due to President Obama's stepping in and helping the industry. That doesn't speak well for Romney who was all for letting it go broke. Ohio is going to be an interesting state to watch from now until November.

I hope Romney does not provide his old tax returns. Why should he as it will not change how any of you libs vote. Even if Romney gave everything he made to taxes, the libs would say he made too much. Harry Reid made a claim based on information he allegedly received from a Bain investor, that Mitt Romney paid NO TAXES for a period of at least 10 years.
All Mitt Romney has to do to prove Harry Reid is a liar is to show his tax returns for those ten years. That's all. Simple!

The only documents that appear to be sealed (acutally not sealed but hidden) belong to Mr. Romney. They are called his tax records. If he is a good honest U.S. citizen, than he would not be so afraid to show them. A good business man should be proud of his record and be happy to show them off to the world. Only someone who has secrets would hide them. As for college records, they are not really necessary, but I do wonder what Romney's grades were. He hasn't produced them either.
