Jindal on veepstakes: 'Paul Ryan brings a lot to the table'

J. Scott Applewhite / AP

Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Paul Ryan’s got a friend in Bobby Jindal.

Jindal, governor of Louisiana, told an audience of conservative activists on Saturday that presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney would send a “powerful message” on budgetary issues were he to choose Ryan, Wisconsin’s U.S. House representative, as his running mate.

The remarks came as Jindal – a buzzed-about veep prospect himself – wrapped up a keynote address to the Red State Gathering in Jacksonville, an annual conference of Tea Party and other conservative activist groups.

"I think picking somebody like a Paul Ryan would send a very powerful message that this administration was serious about Medicare reform, entitlement reform, shrinking the size of government, and doing so in a courageous way," Jindal said of a Romney presidency.

Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee and the author of a controversial plan that Democrats have attacked over its cuts to federal entitlement programs.

Romney, who won Ryan’s endorsement in March, has spoken favorably of the plan, pleasing conservatives who have helped to make Ryan’s name a nationwide brand.

Still, some at the conference here clearly had another veepstaker in mind.

“I was going to God bless you and pray that our nominee has you and your first lady on the list to be vice president,” an audience member said as Jindal took questions.

Jindal, brushing aside the compliment, responded that he has a “bias” toward the executive experience earned by governors, before adding that Ryan is an exception to that rule.

Asked later if he was making an endorsement of a Romney-Ryan ticket, Jindal said no.

“It’s certainly not my place to be making endorsements. I mean, it’s really up to Governor Romney to pick who he wants,” Jindal told NBC News.  “I just think Paul Ryan brings a lot to the table.”

“Paul's a friend.  Paul's been a great leader. I think he’s an example of a great choice,” Jindal added later.  “I think there are several other examples of great candidates out there as well.”

Jindal earlier told the crowd that he also admired Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Texas Gov. Rick Perry– whom Jindal backed for president during the Republican primaries.

Perry, who dropped out of the race in January, announced for president at last year’s Red State Gathering, held in Charleston, S.C.

Sounds like Jindal isn't too interested in going down with the U.S.S. Romney

Ryan does bring a lot to the table for the millionaires....anyone who doesn't realize this is blind.

As far as the middle class, he brings more of the TRICKLE ON policy that St Reagan began decades ago.

It didn't work then and it wont work now. How stupid do they think we are? Obama 2012.

Ryan at least has the guts to admit our country is in deep weeds with the deficit. I would not want to see reform in Medicare, but I do realize that its inevitable regardless of politics.

Any politician that denies this is not being honest.

Looks to me like we are now in "trickle up" politics:

The effective tax rate is calculated on your total income, no deductions or exemptions. Data from the Congressional Budget Office on Effective Individual Income Tax Rates that includes ALL investment and tax-exempt income:

      Income Group....2007 EffTaxRate

      1st 20%.................(-)6.8%

      2nd 20%.................(-)0.4%

      Mid 20%....................3.3%

      4th 20%.....................6.2%

      Top 20%..................14.4%

      Top 5%....................17.6%

      Top 1%....................19.0%

        #81.2 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 10:15 AM EDT

Do you think it ought to be the other way around DON. Where the 1st 20% pay 19.0% and the top 1% pay (-)6.8%. A true conservative.

I didn't say it should be the other way around. I was just disputing everyone saying we are in trickle down economics.

No need to read extra things into my post.

          #81.4 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 10:41 AM EDT

The economy collapsed with the TRCKLE ON policies during the Bush era. Why would any thinking person want to return to that?

Jobs were being lost every month, millions lost their retirement and homes.

As opposed to the past few years, when Obama has given the middle class tax cuts, has provided the country with a health plan for everyone and has offered job plans for infrastructure which the gop wouldn't pass.

As hard as they try, here's hoping the people don't fall for the same old crap the gop has offered us for decades.

The gop didn't/wouldn't even pass a jobs plan....and they couldn't even vote for a tax cut for the middle class....but they do endorse tax cuts for the millionaires.

          Obama 2012. That is all.

The economic problems were mostly caused by the unsustainable housing bubble collapse that had many complex causes, nothing to do with taxes. It would have collapsed regardless of who was president.

The Bush tax cuts went to all brackets, and cut lower brackets the most percent, so I do not buy trickle down caused the problems.

            #81.6 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 11:38 AM EDT

87% of the Bush tax cuts went to the wealthy Thats the total dollars count. This is in sharp contrast to What Bush said when promoting the tax cuts, "By far the vast majority of my tax cuts go to the bottom end of the spectrum."

I'm not a republican so my 2 cents is Paul Ryan would be the perfect candidate for Romney's team for VP and the path on which they will take, see what he wants to do to the railroad retirement fund? Doesn't take much to see which side of the fence this guys on, Same path the Bush administration did with the retirement funding requirements for the Post office which will cause it's demise as well.

"Paul Ryan, Republican chair of the House Budget Committee, is attempting to Raid the Railroad Retirement fund by introducing a ‘poison pill’ that would effectively steal the hard earned money that Railroad workers have been putting aside for years. Many people may be familiar with Paul Ryan’s current budget plan for our nation, which he calls a “path to prosperity.” What many people may not be aware of is that his plan for the nation is similar to his plan for local railroad workers, which is to create a “path to prosperity” for the top 1% that is being paved by a “path to poverty” for the rest of us.

Paul Ryan added a little something extra this year to the conservative’s immoral budget proposal for America. In addition to devastating our social safety net by gutting social programs that benefit the most vulnerable populations among us, including the working poor, sick, disabled and elderly populations, Paul Ryan is extending this destructive crusade to include middle class working Americans who contribute to the railroad pension fund. It should be noted that the money saved from this crusade will be transfered up to the wealthiest among us, who believe they are entitled to it"

Jay, you do realize that any unbiased expert that looks at spending projections for social programs will tell you these will be bankrupt in time anyway regardless ?

Ryan just made proposals for Congress to consider. If Democrats did not like them they should at least give their own ideas to save these programs for the future, rather than just pretend there is no problem.

No one wants cuts to these, but they will and I at least would like to plan for the future and I can't as long as politicians sweep things under the rug.

Most voters do not realize serious spending cuts are coming soon regardless of politics unless we want to get getting more credit downgrades,

Taxing rich only will give us squat . The most serious issues if we look at spending projections for the next decades are social issues. The longer we hold off on reform, the worse the situation gets.

Democrats are just trying to keep all this swept under the rug until after the election. I am not saying i prefer cuts to SS and Medicare but its a guarantee they are coming.

Well donny boy... here's an alternative solution...

Have people like willard actually kick in some to fund the social health of the country...

                How you ask??

By extending payroll taxes to investment income... That's right... You heard it here first..

Considering that willard brought in about 20 million last year, and didn't pay anything towards the social viability of this country,... I think it's about time that willard, and the other members of the .1%, who derive the vast majority of their income from investments, start kicking in a bit..

                I know... FABULOUS IDEA... Thanks...

Social Security was established as a retirement savings plan for people without government pensions. In theory, the money is invested in an account for the persons retirement and not used for general government expenses.

The benefits one gets is proportional to what one pays in , so this may not help much as these folks would draw higher SS benefits. The stock markets are still lower than 12 years ago, so capital gains may not be as much as you believe.

Myself, I don't believe taxing rich alone can save us if we look at Medicare costs. Its all a gross exaggeration and politics. This tax would no where close to save Medicare.

The only thing Willard would need to do would be to get Paul to the temple for conversion. Hey Don, get the tax rates back to Clinton era and leave SS and Medicare along. If you feel that taxing the rich won't do squat, why mention it? You must be a Paul Ryan wannabe!

I don't care if the tax rates go back to Clinton era, but My point is doing only the top bracket gives squat and I think all brackets should go up. Three quarters of Bush tax cuts went to lower brackets.

But this money would not really save Medicare and SS if we take a hard look at the projections on spending.

There is no way to tax ourselves out of the problems.

Most voters prefer politicians that sweep bad new under the rug. Nome of us wants cuts to entitlements, but some of us realize that some things are not sustainable as is and will need changes if our kids will get them.

If it makes you sleep better at night to know that you have all those dem mayors in jail and a possible state speaker of the house under investigation by the FBI, more power to you. The point is if we do nothing, the situation will get worse and more serious cuts will be required. By reforming sooner, they may not need to be as drastic.

I don't want to see cuts myself, but I can see they are coming one way or another. Doing nothing, and Medicare will be bankrupt anyway before to long.

I realize folks paid in and needs these, but spending projections indicate they are not sustainable.

To get us out of the financial mess we are in it wont't be the result of spending cuts alone nor will it be due to tax increases alone. It will require a decrease in spending, like on fighter jets the military doesn't want, and other programs as well as revenue increases like the wealthy paying a little more. I have read what unbiased experts have said and they say it over and over but no one listens, least of all guys like Ryan and other Republicans who are bent on even lower taxes on the wealthy and not paying for the unfunded wars started by Dubya.

                                    #86.11 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 12:25 PM EDT

All spending will need to be considered including Pentagon. Tax increases on the wealthy "paying a little more" gives us peanuts. For taxes to be significant all brackets need to go way up.

Even Bill Clinton admits in a public TV documentary due out in Oct that that biggest issue going forward in the next decades if we look at spending projections is social programs.

At least Ryan seems to have the guts to admit the problem, whereas Democrats want to deny the problem until after the election.

"Paul Ryan brings a lot to the table"? Indeed he does. Seniors don't really need Medicare, do they? Lets just give them a voucher: that will make them happy. Well, I for one senior do not trust "vouchers" and knowing they won't be for me, just for my children and grandchildren doesn't make them any less unpalatable. The rest of Ryan's "budget plan" is just as bad: more of Grover Norquist's grand vision to eliminate the government safety nets for the old, the ill, and the young; to get the government "out" of education, and, in essence, to quit spending "our" money for anything except for arms and munitions.

                                          the rightyDeleted

First, we all have to remember what normal people think of as virtues right-wingers think of as detrimental.

If you think a psychotic levelof hate-and-fear against your fellow man, especially the American people, then both Jingo and Ryan are considered fine examples of right-wing candidate material.

If a total disconnect from how the economy really works is considered a virtue, then Ryan could well be your man.

If a disdain for any sort of rational thought is a requirement then most of the generic brainwashed right-wing lunatics and mindless minions would do.

It will never be difficult for any of these offensive and truly depraved individuals to live down the level of corruption Dick Cheney brought to "public service."

For a person that claims you know how the economy really works, I am not see much rational thoughts here, only insults and name calling.

If you really understand politics and economics, I would try to show some original rational thought

The state that gave us Joe McCarthy, the Sikh temple shooting and the Republican party now gives us Paul Ryan. What a hoot!

Yea Mr. Jindal you're right, Ryan brings a lot to the table. Too bad that table is only set for the 1%. I'm sure the Koch brothers have a spot reserved at the table as well as spots for big oil, big insurance, hedge fund brokers and the rest of their buddies. Unless you are somehow in their little club they have no concern for your future. Paul Ryan has his head stuck so far up their a$$es they have to open their mouths so he can see. Voting Republican will take us right back to the Bush economy. Have you noticed that even though the economy has suffered that they continue to make strong gains? They are no longer job creators because they have figured out how to make even more by manipulating the system. One look at Romney's tax returns the past ten years will prove it. Wake up America, the GOP has indeed SOLD OUT!

A thought experiment: Should Dems stay mum on GOP VP pick? Makes the case that most Vp picks won't help Romney--esp if the Dems play it right. bit.ly/OwIXlb

Jindal will be President one day. The guy knows not to get on a sinking ship. Pick anyone but me!!! I bet on his vetting papers he claimed Jerry Sandusky as a confidant. Anything to get out of the running.

Jindal is on the sinking ship and his greatest goal would be to be Romney's vice president. He is running around the country lying about President Obama and smearing every great success President Obama has had. H isn't doing that for Romney for funsy wunsy. Piyush Jindal would happily agree to be vice president. He is a rotten sorry typical right wing anti-American governor against the middle class but for the top one per cent. That is really all that counts with the GOP.

Jindal is a whimpy little opportunist, who, like Willard, can't even run using his given name. To say that he is presidential material is rediculous.

                                                  Ed,

All you have to do is remember that these Republicans voted for George W Bush, who is so stupid he is unable to construct a complete sentence in the English Language.

The bar is very, very low for Republicans.
