Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio has been mentioned as a possible vice preisdential pick for Mitt Romney.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, on Friday said he was not trying to distance himself from former President George W. Bush when he said he was "frustrated" during his time as budget director.
Portman, who served as Bush's director of management and budget for a little over a year, told The Hill newspaper, “I was frustrated when I was there about some spending issues — specifically, as you know, I wanted to offer a balanced budget over five years, and a lot of people didn’t." The comments pointed to an attempt by the Ohio senator, thought of as a top prospect to be chosen as Mitt Romney's running mate, to distance himself from his association with the younger Bush.
But speaking to reporters after touring the Ohio State Fair on Friday, Portman dismissed the notion.
"I've said that for years, ever since I was at OMB," said Portman. "It's a frustrating job, it's probably the toughest job in Washington. And by the way, my frustration continues. Im extremely frustrated. In the Senate, we're not doing what we ought to be doing."
One of the most frequently cited reasons why the Buckeye State senator may not be asked to join the national ticket is his connection to the Bush administration, which Democrats have continued to point to as a reason behind the sluggish economic recovery. When addressing new jobs numbers released Friday, President Barack Obama said, "We’re not going to get to where we need to be if we go back to the policies that helped to create this mess in the first place."
Asked if it was fair to draw a link between him and the Bush years, Portman would only say that is "proud" of his time as U.S. trade representative and budget director.
The possible GOP vice presidential nominee remains busy this weekend stumping for Romney throughout his home state. And at the state fair, the Ohioans he spoke to were just as interested as the media about his political future. Some hoped he could work to represent the country on a national level, others telling him that Ohio needs him to stay.
Portman maintains that no one from the Romney campaign has tipped him off as to when a VP announcement could come. "They keep that very close hold," he told reporters. When asked what role he might play in the Romney campaign, he said, "I don't know" and talked about how focused he is on the state of Ohio.
And while the freshman senator has been criticized for being relatively unknown, even in his own state, the VP buzz may be helping out a bit. A steady stream of people were interested in meeting Portman, others doing double takes as he walked by.
"They're probably wondering why I'm walking around with a donut hamburger," he said.
Portman sampled the donut hamburger before the deep fried buckeyes but after the pork loin sandwich.

I'm in Vegas for a few days and saw a large sign advertising Carrot Top at the Luxor! Could it truly be our own DumbFux, Feisty redwig? Portman has the experience and qualities to be a great VP (much better than sleepy joe) and would excel at a debate. But I'm still hoping that Marco Rubio will be selected... he's worth 10 points or more in the polls.
Our great president (yech) has admitted in his 'memoir' that he frequently smoked pot and snorted cocaine, plus he liked to drink beer 'to excess' whatever that means! So give us a break folks with Portman.... Barry can do better I'll give him that one!

The total workforce is 155 million. The unemployment rate under Bush was 5%. Multiply those two numbers and you get an average of 7,750,000 workers who were unemployed.
Similarly the unemployment rate under Obama is now 8.2% which translates to 12,710,000 unemployed workers.
That means that, net, 5 million jobs were lost under Obama.

Was he or wasn't he W's Budget Director, he may really want to stay away from that topic because we all know what subsequently happened during W's tenure in the White House. it's easy to say that Bush's unemplyment rate was 5% when he inherited 4%. It's easy to riticize President Obama's unemplyment rate when he inherited about 8% AND between Jan-March of 2009 we lost another 2 million jobs.
so unless you can show me that both Bush and Obama started with exactly same unemplyment rate and exactly same state of economy, your SIMPLE MATH is just that - simple.

He states because of his expertise in vulture capitalism he has the where- with-all to cure the economic woes of the country. He certainly knows how to hide big bucks, out-source, raid pension funds, bankrupt companies because of debt he heaped on and then get out with huge profits, he knows how to manipulate the system to get himself a $102,000,000 personal IRA. During W's Administration some folks had no trouble harkening back to Clinton (especially with the bimbos and all) but get upset when the tables turn and the shoe is on the other foot. I have repeatedly pointed out there are about 12% more registered democrats than GOPers. A sample that did not reflect the voter proportions would be meaningless. Portman must be hoping no one will remember he and Mitch Daniel's role in the Bush budget. You know, the budget that kept the cost of two wars off the books in the hopes no one would notice the sky rocketing debt.
I really don't care who Romney picks but he will choose someone who won't steal the stage which eliminates Christie, Rubio. He also needs someone who won't remind voters of Bush 43 or whose very selection will result in digging in the Bush weeds again which probably eliminates Condi Rice, Rob Portman and definitely anyone named Bush as in Jeb.

I can fully understand why he would want to distance himself from the Bush Administration. It was, if not the worst, certainly one of the worst in history. Since he was the budget guru he was very much in the mix with the lousey economy and the deficits don't matter thing.
I know they keep trying to distance themselves from bush but at the same time Romney has the exact same bush policies except Romney's plan has a bigger tax cut for himself. Romney even wants his own war in Iran.

You do know the fast and furious only by another name programs were started under bush. When Holder found out about them he ended them.

Romney's choice of running mate has got to be a really tough decision. Frequently presidential candidates will pick a doofus like Biden as their running mate to so they can look good by comparison. Other times they will pick a VP just to bring in a particular segment of the electorate, as with Walter Mondale's choice of Geraldine Ferraro. Romney recognizes that the success of any enterprise is dependent on having a top-notch management team, and so he will want someone who is smart and tough.
Not sure, but from what I've heard, Portman fits in that last category.

Kr- you are almost correct. Both parties are fiscally irresponsible. I can not blame Democrats alone. But they are no less foolish with the taxes than the GOP. That in the end is a circle argument with no end. But we have every reason to believe that Mitt knows the economy and MONEY better than Obama does. Our system has always been that the White house proposes a budget to Congress for approval, so that our representatives, have a chance to give us a voice in the way our taxes are used. King Obama thinks it is the other way, and if they don't give him a blank check they have failed us. He is an elitist and has had his shot. No better than Bush at handing the money. And marginally worse in his disdain for our voice in the process. No budget for his entire term. He fails as a leader.
No matter who Willard picks as VP, they'll both be losers. But then again that's what the conservatives like, a loser, the loser will be their presidential candidate in 2016. Just look a Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, McCain, Romney, they were all losers before the republicans picked them to be their presidential candidate the next time around. So that makes the republican party the loser party. But we already knew that.
As he was trying to distance himself from George W. Bush. I've got news for Portman and the other tea people Koch republicans. Most voters aren't like you tea people. We can and do think for ourselves, we don't have to be told what to think like you tea people Koch republicans. We know and everybody except the tea people Koch republicans know you are all trying to distance yourselves from George W. Bush and Cheney.
I would prefer Marco Rubio as the Vice Presidential selection for the next eight years.
This would groom Marco for a run for the Presidency in 2020. Mr Portman may have a bit too much baggage.
On Senator Portman's budgetary watch, we fought a war of choice in Iraq, while lowering taxes--mostly on the wealthy. (Senator McCain, a man of honor, rightly condemned this.)
The MasterCharge bill came due in 2008-2009, and we are still trying to pay it off.
