Romney: 'I have paid taxes every year'

LAS VEGAS -- Mitt Romney said Friday that he has paid taxes "every year," vigorously disputing an assertion by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee paid no income taxes for a decade.

“Harry Reid really has to put up or shut up,” Romney told reporters following a rally here.

“Let me also say, categorically, I have paid taxes every year. And a lot of taxes. So Harry is simply wrong and that is why I am so anxious for him to give us the names of the people who put this forward. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear the names are people from the White House or the Obama campaign or who knows where they are coming from,” Romney added.

Romney's heated words toward the Senate's top Democrat follows Reid's repeated assertion this week that an investor in Romney's former firm, Bain Capital, confided that Romney had paid no taxes for 10 years. Reid hasn't substantiated the claim, nor has he identified his source, but that hasn't stopped the claim from advancing.

Reid wouldn't back down on Friday, either, issuing a statement calling for the release of more of the presumptive GOP nominee’s tax returns.

Rick Wilking / REUTERS

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney makes a point at a campaign event in Golden, Colorado August 2, 2012.

"Romney's message to Nevadans is this: he won't release his taxes, but he wants to raise yours,” Reid’s statement said. "It's hard to say which is more insulting to Americans' intelligence, Mitt Romney's tax plan or his refusal to show the American people what's in his tax returns.”

But asked why Romney won’t just release more of his tax returns to silence the attacks, the former Massachusetts governor said he is just following suit.

“I’m following the precedent set by the last presidential candidate of our party, John McCain, putting out two years of income tax returns and putting out a financial disclosure statement, those as required by law, of course,” Romney said.

Speaking to reporters during his first stateside press conference since last month's jobs report, Romney said these attacks by the Senate majority leader – in addition to those by President Barack Obama – are not what the country should be focusing on right now.

“I had hoped it would be a debate on the direction of the country but what we are seeing instead is one attack after the other that are misleading, false attacks,” he said. “The president’s ads saying I am going to raise taxes on the middle class. That’s patently, simply false. The president has now raised taxes on the middle class as so determined by the Supreme Court.”

"The president has now raised taxes on the middle class as so determined by the Supreme Court."

Hold on there...the president will tax (fine) about 1% of people who can afford it but choose not to buy health insurance...as so determined by the Supreme Court. If you're going to accuse the president of giving misleading information, at least get your facts straight.

I seriously thought the next line would be something like "neener neener you can't catch me!" The man acts like he's still on the play ground! I read a comment awhile back that called Romney's bus the "Third Grade Express." Very fitting for a candidate that runs around telling people to "shut up!"

Hey Mittens,

It's for YOU to put up. Put up your tax returns. That's all it will take to make everybody shut up. It must be pretty bad if you can't make that simple effort. Your mouth is your worst enemy.

It's a dilemma, right Mitty? On the one hand, Queen Ann says "you people know all you need to know" and she can make life awfully tough for a milquetoast like you. On the other, it is starting to look a bit sketchy.

What to do, what to do...

Honesty and transparency which is completely alien to Mitty's legend? He is awfully accustomed to ordering the "little people" around, firing those who get in his way, and may soon be provoked enough to shout "off with their heads, OFF WITH THEIR HEADS, I say," since he is pretty sure he is Emperor already.

Or intransigence.

Since Mitty lacks insight and Annie lacks humility, I'm guessing it will be the latter.

Ursula,

It is a tax. Obama knew it was a tax. It is the exact same trick FDR used - the only way Social Security was legall. Obama argued before SCOTUS it was a tax ....

The reason Obama lied to the American people about it being a fine was that there was no way it would have ever had passed if it was acknowledged as a tax.

Additionally, Obama has raised taxes on tobacco that are predominately paid by the middle class and poor, Obama has raised taxes on medical devices that effect the poor and middle class more than the rich ... the ACA is loaded with taxes to companies which are passed on to the poor and middle class ... taxes on insurance companies that are passed on .... excise taxes ... ah nevermind

It is just amazing how easily / or willfully you guys are fooled .... over and over and over again.

It is going to be way more than 1% Ursula, as millions of young and healthy Americans choose to pay the penalty rather than buy the expensive insurance.

Yes Harry, who has never released any of his tax returns, needs to put up or shut up. Isn't what he is doing illegal. Just how would an investor at Bain know how much Romney has paid in taxes. I am sure the IRS would really be interested in talking to this person(s).

Keep throwing feces at the wall Harry. It'll just bounce back and foul your suit.

He thinks we will just take his word for it, but in 2002 when he was running for Gov he lied about his taxes and was caught. He told reporters he never filed for taxes in Utah while he was there then they found out he filed for 2 years. As he was lieing to reporters he was trying to get them changed so nobody would know. So Mr. Romney lie to me once, shame on you, lie to me twice, shame on me. If you paid taxes then prove it, show your tax returns.

It is not a fine; it is a "Tax" as determined by the SCOTUS. Taxing 1% of the population isn't important to you here ... but I'm sure that you do want to add more taxes to the 1% that President Obama and his party have been talking about. A tax is a tax is a tax. If you want to change the law regarding disclosures by all presidential and all government candidates (an excellent idea that!) then you'll need to change the law. If you want to change the law you'll need both House and Senate in the end ... and good luck with that! NO ONE in government wants to submit to that kind of disclosure requirement because only honest people could run. What would we do then!

Romney wouldn't be good but he would be MUCH better than Obama.

Obama is a war criminal and he should be impeached.

Obama has:

Signed the NDAA bill into law allowing the assassination of any us citizen without trial (yes, I know it's been around for a long time but Obama signed it into law even though it's unconstitutional)

Obama has killed hundreds of innocent people (including 3 Americans) with drone strikes he has ordered in Pakistan And Yemen.

Obama has raised the National debt Nearly $5 TRILLION.

Obama has allowed almost 1 Million ILLEGAL aliens to become legal citizens (thanks to those he allowed to become citizens, they have committed 19 murders and 142 sex crimes)

Lied About all of His 2008 Campaign Promises Including the One Where He said he campaigned in 57 states.

Google Search "Dreams from my REAL father" and you'll see, Obama's father was a failed communist who's dream was to DESTROY America, at age 18, Obama went to a MARXIST school.

Romney is not required to release them... and he shouldn't release them because of the incessant chirping from the left. Leave them hanging... I don't care if they shout it from the mountain tops... It's none of their business. And before you go saying that it is... I will tell you point blank that it is NONE of your business. Romney did what was required... PERIOD!

Bob: Again, you and republicans keep harping on "it's a tax, it's a tax"...but it is only going to be paid by a small amount of middle Americans; those who choose not to buy the insurance. The majority of Americans already have insurance. Just like letting the tax expire for the 1%, it's only going to affect a small amount of Americans, yet the middle class will benefit. Why is one set of Americans protected and another is not? The ACA didn't place the taxes on tobacco and medical devices dummy, those have been in affect for many years. It's also about choices, individual choices for using tobacco, and not buying insurance; something I thought republicans championed, guess I am wrong about that.

Harry Reid makes a statement about an unsourced RUMOR, then says "the burden of proof is on Romney to prove it isn't true".

Great, let's apply that same reasoning to Obama's College records (that are rumored to list him as a FOREIGN STUDENT), Harvard thesis, and birth certificate (the REAL one, not the FORGED ONE.) ....Oh wait, to suggest this is just crazy, but to accuse Romney of something with far less proof is commonsense. that whole birth certificate thing is so old and tired. The governor of the state in which he was born even confirmed he was born there. Republicans have no argument to fall back on so they keep insisting it was photoshopped or whatever. The reality is that people should be far more concerned about a man who won't provide proof that he has paid taxes, like a real American would happily do, then a man who has provided all of the information requested on his end. If you don't like the Obama's fine, admit that but let's give the birth certificate argument a rest.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller was brought up in the same financial environment as Gov. Romney. Silver spoon so to speak, but the senator moved to WV more than 30 years ago and related to the common, down-to-earth, hard working families that make that state great. His wealth was welcomed. His wealth bought a lot of ads. His and Sharon's fancy clothes, cars and homes meant nothing in the eyes of good down-to-earth red blooded West "By God" Virginians who epitomize this great country voting masses. If he has not paid income taxes for 10 years, he probably did it legally. He's already admitted that he's been audited by the IRS. Presumably, if he did anything illegal he would have been prosecuted. Perhaps the real problem is that in this country it is possible to be a multi-millionaire and legally avoid paying income taxes, leaving the less wealthy to shoulder the burden of paying for defending the country, building the infrastructure, and providing the social services that benefit us all. Expect even more of the same if Romney is elected.

1) It's a tax. It was written as a tax, it was voted in as a tax, it was argued before SCOTUS as a tax, and was decided by SCOTUS that it is a tax. So unless the entire middle class has received a waiver, those hit will be taxed.

2) Romney has released all the information required by law. Precedent was set by previous candidates, including the incumbent. The more he releases, the more is asked of him. Give an inch, take a mile.

3) Reid has made unsubstantiated accusations. He has the responsibility to present his sources. Romney isn't required to disprove a negative. If you believe he does, then answer this: Prove to everyone on the site how many people didn't die because you didn't shoot them with a gun that you don't own. Because there are accusations that you shot someone today. (this accusation is easier to prove than Reid's)

4) The same accusers of Romney having foreign accounts also have foreign accounts. And yes, Ms DNC Chairwoman, it can be confirmed that you have accounts in the Cayman Islands too.

There are enough viable and legitimate issues to attack Romney on. Perhaps the other side has an inherent aversion to "legitimate". Perhaps using falacies, falsehoods and other forms of fiction is imbeded into their DNA.

Romney could have Reid's scalp if he showed his tax returns and they were clean. Romney will not show his taxes and one will likely find some serious problems in those returns.

Outcome: Reid keeps his scalp and Romney loses the election.

It's not a bad thing to be white and male in America, the problem are the white males who feel that they are entitled to special treatment and acting like 3rd grade azzholes. BTW, I am a white male in America.

Bayllie said: Hey, if I buy a pack of gum once a year, every year, in a state that has sales taxes, I too paid taxes every year.

He must have supplied the gum company with a huge amount of revenue then. Especially when he stated that he paid a "LOT" of taxes.

Dumb liberals - trying to make a point that is really really stupid.

Romney said: “I had hoped it would be a debate on the direction of the country but what we are seeing instead is one attack after the other that are misleading, false attacks,” he said.

The liberals don't want a debate on the direction of the country... they want to keep up false allegations and lies because they know Obama can't even compete in this arena.

Romney has provided all the tax return information necessary and he’s right, the Dems need to either come up with something solid or just close their mouths and go on. They haven’t because there isn’t anything there for them to find. If there had been, you could bet the last dollar obama left you that they would have produced it. Rather than trying to win the election with lies and innuendos, the Dems should give running on obama’s record a shot.

I’ve watched him over the last 3 ½ years and he’s had one excuse after another for what he hasn’t managed to do and what little he has completed doesn’t fit with what most of us want. Yeah, the republicans have fought him on a lot of what he’s proposed, that’s why we elected them – to protect our interests and they have been doing that. Obama’s spending is out of control and he’s diligently working to build a welfare/socialist state. Every election he’s managed to win so far has been accomplished through lies and innuendo, not skill or ability because he has none to offer.

I heard a woman on TV last night spouting a bunch of crap about how the white people don’t like him because he’s black. That’s BS. Many of the American people (of all races) don’t like him because he can’t do the job. He is a prime example of someone who has been promoted to the best of his inabilities.

and that's why the Repukes keep running the ad that distorts Obama's words about everyone paying their fair share and that none of us get rich and build businesses in America without leveraging the infrastructure built by those that came before them. As a matter of fact, this is the CORE argument that fair taxation should be built around. A republican taking about an honest debate is like giving Bernie Madoff the keys to the cash register and expecting him to come up at the end of the day with a balanced bank! Nice try....but no cigar.

For those trying to compare the demand to see presidential candidate's tax returns with demands to see president's personal documents or some other irrelevant crap from random democrats and bureaucrats:

If elected Romney might become instrumental in designing and implementing tax policy for the whole country including himself. It is very important to know who will benefit from the proposed changes and Romney's taxes can provide you with a glance on his logic and motives. E.G. :If he used all existing loopholes to save himself as much money as is barely legal to do while getting ready to run for president, I think you can bet that he will try to create more loopholes for himself first and only then think about your interests.

BrianB, you apparently missed the point but I'm not surprised. Romney answered he paided TAXES but didn't specify what kind of taxes: excise, sales, real estate. So unless he says he paid FEDERAL INCOME TAXES his answer is MEANINGLESS. Thus my example: if he bought gum, and paid sales tax, he is not lying - he paid taxes. That is the point - not how much money he made. Wow, you are simple!

Harry Reid makes up a LIE and claims Romney hasnt paid his taxes in 10 years. He has absolutely no proof, none at all and yet all you Libs eat it up as fact. And then you rant about how hes a rich guy whose unamerican because hes rich.

But

Eric Holder lies under oath, and is hiding somthing, and so is the Obama Admin with Fast and Furious when they used Executive Privledge to hide documents. Yet you Libs couldnt possibly care any less. American Citizens were shot and killed by drug cartel who were given guns by our Government and they're lying to cover it up so the who Obama Administraion doesnt go down in an amazing display of failed promises and failure? And you Libs just turn a Blind eye to this.

Typical Mitt Romney response, ignore that he is the one who needs to "put up or shut up" then change the subject to the Affordable Care Act and lie about it to boot--then hope no one notices the bait and switch. Here's the reality for Romney, if Harry Reid's source at Bain is wrong, Mitt can PROVE it by releasing his tax returns. The fact that Mitt refuses means he is hiding those returns for a reason. Follow the money.

Romney hasn't even FILED his 2011 tax return. He keeps blaming it on his accountants. What kind of an example does that set? It shows how ineffective he would be trying to run this country if he can't even take care of his personal business. Of course, when he is running his campaign on the economy and jobs based on lowering taxes for himself and his rich buddies who are trying to buy the White House for him, he doesn't want anyone to know how low his taxes are already. There is no doubt that he will ask for another extension in October to keep that hidden. It's very sad that his wife defends him by stating he gives a lot of money to his church. That is no more than another tax deduction for him. Until all the tax breaks are discussed responsibly, I don't believe it will do any good to raise the taxes when his kind have the army of accountants and tax attorneys to find more loopholes.

NYPride, you know Harry Reid lied exactly how? Because Mitt Romney tells you so or the GOP says so. If Reid is wrong, then Mitt can prove him wrong by releasing his tax returns. The fact that he refuses tells me it is Mitt Romney who is lying.

Why don't you read the facts about Fast & Furious--not the Darryl Issa or right-wing out of context version but the facts. As for the GOP suing Eric Holder, there is stupid and then there is double down arrogant stupid as in the GOP suing Eric Holder. How about suing the State of Arizona for laws so lax that the agents trying to stop guns going to Mexico were prevented from doing so by the AZ courts. Now, that's fact. But you see, Darryl Issa has yet to call the agents involved to testify because then Issa knows he will look the fool he is.

It seems, Pride, that it is conservatives who are doing the waffling because they had no problem with Bush/Cheney's use of executive privilege for everything from starting a war to the names of big oil, gas and coal industry leaders who participated in writing Cheney's energy policy but now that a democrat is in the White House, suddenly such a thing is not allowed.

A couple of things that are important with respect to Romney releasing his tax returns. First is did he take advantage of the amnesty program for those who committed felonies for not disclosing cash stashed in foreign banks and not reporting this information on their U.S. tax forms. If he did, how many years since 2003 did he take advantage of the amnesty program.

The second thing is more important. He proved in public that he is an outright liar when it comes to his taxes. If you have any doubt look up his record for when he was running for Governor of Mass. At the same time he was "retroactively" paying Mass. taxes to clean up his mess so he would meet the 7 consecutive year residency requirement was claiming he never claimed residency in Utah while the whole time claiming primary residency tax exemptions on property back home in Utah. He also claimed that he was living in his sons basement in Mass. while this was going on.

So you see the relevence in releasing the tax returns centers more around did he commit felony tax fraud and was given amnesty for one or more years than how much or how little tax he legally paid. As to the claim that he paid no taxes at all for ten years since Mitt has shown he has no problem lying when it suits him the burden of proof is on him to prove that he is telling the truth now.

No such thing as innocent until proven guilty when the Democrats are on the run. Obama simply has no record to run on, so they make stuff up, and none better at fabricating then Harry Reid. I doubt there ever was a Bain Capital employee passing information to Reid, it is far more likely that Reid just made this stuff up. But without one shred of proof, and only one supposedly credible anonymous witness, the entire Democratic Party has tried and convicted Romney. As if the IRS wouldn't be all over Romney if he suddenly just stopped paying his taxes. Can't wait to hear the theme song at the Democratic National Convention played when then announce Obama, Send in the Clowns.

I have paid taxes myself going all the way back to 1973, and I have nothing to hide, even those overnight travel and business deductions, or my mortgage interest, property tax, charity, student loan, or medical deductions that I have used to get back more than some people that don't file Schedule A get back too. All of Mitt's bobbing and weaving on this issue indicates that he has something major to hide, as it was Mitt's own dad George Romney who inferred that any politician that didn't release all of his tax returns is trying to hide something too.

I'll beg to differ there 1POV. Mitt Romney has yet to fully release ANY of his taxes as is required by law of any US Presidential candidate, as Mitt has failed to release a required Federal tax form for any year that fully describes his offshore financial holdings. That IRS form is required if you hold funds in offshore bank or investment accounts that do not automatically report your holdings and earnings there to the IRS. Mitt has yet to release that form for any tax year to public scrutiny, and has refused to do so on the grounds that doing so would be "damaging" to his candidacy. That story appeared on another media outlet 2 weeks ago and still has not been resolved.

So, since your boy Mittens is running for President in contempt of a Federal election law, it would behoove you to at least be cognizant of that fact and to be mindful of that fact in your writing too.

No one is saying Mitt broke the law, or "just stopped paying taxes", (which would cause problems with the IRS). It is perfectly legal to make a lot of money and pay no taxes. All you have to do is come up with enough tax shelters, use enough loopholes and find enough deductions, and, voila! No taxable income. I'm sure Mitt's tax accountants get paid plenty to figure out how to do that. I don't even have a problem with Mitt doing that. I have a problem with his lack of transparency and accountability. As a voter, I want to know how he operates. The fact that he is refusing to admit how he operates indicates to me that he operates in a manner that he knows (many of) the American people would not condone, even though it is technically legal. I think most politicians are slippery, but some are more slippery than others.

I am enjoying reading these here conversations so much that decided to give you back my opinion on some resent changes in politics.

Ever since intorduction of such titans of thought as Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and some other philosiphers into mainstream politics the dialog has changed. Now, what it reminds me for the most part is a verbal fight between teenage girls. That would mostly apply to the side that is following the above mentioned geniuses.

Did you notice that the most important thing in the Romney's campaign is that Obama said a wrong word at a wrong time. And who cares what he meant? He said "that"!! Literally.

It is very pleasing to my eye to see how President of your country is called by "conservatives" here. Oh they show all their wits! Never mind the ideas, the policies etc. Why would you need such dull crap at all if you can just call the head of the senate "Dirty Harry" and say he is a felon. That should do, used to work just fine in 6th grade!

For example here you have an argument: one side is seemingly interested in seeing the prove that a candidate is honest, is concerned not only about himself but the country, that he indeed is as good in business as he claims he is. All that is required for him to do is to release his taxes.

What the other side is saying: you give us college papers, some "fast & furios" papers , bus tickets and other absolutely irrelevant things first! Yeah! So what that they are irrelevant! You'll give us a load of it first!

The next argument goes like that - if he gives you his taxes you'll ask for more. You'll never be satisfied, thou we never even tried to satisfy you yet. We just know you libbies and your lamestream media gotcha machine. Soon you'll ask us can we read a newspaper, right?

But the most popular thing is still the name calling - that works all the time. Call me a moron and I'll run away crying I guess. It is so easy I love it: just call the President of United States "Obumbo" and he is sure to lose his reelection!

So go ahead, continue please.

How many votes would change if Governor Romney released his tax returns? I already have enough information on what both presumptive candidates would prioritize if elected.

Taxes returns, shmax returns. How does each candidate measure a successful economy? By the unemployment rate? By the stock market? By the Olympic Gold Medal count? By the average income or the median income? By the average wealth or the median wealth? By average education level or average life-span or average income?

Once you think you know how he measures a successful America, then you have an idea of what he would strive to achieve. What are the possibilities that he can move a Congress of freely elected persons, every bit as egocentric as him, to support his plan of action?

Tax returns measure how well a man makes money, and nothing about what kind of public servant he would make.

So those of you who are demanding Romney's tax returns. Ask me one question--Why do you care? Is there even one of you who would change their vote if you discovered he paid an effective rate of 30%? Or would you respond like you did when you found out that he was much more generous than Obama by saying well of course he did because he made so much money. I guarantee that none of you would change your vote based on whats in his tax return, I dont get what the big deal to you then is? Explain it to me substantively because if you are just asking for his returns as a volunteer campaigner, go somewhere else.

Tax returns measure how well a man makes money, and nothing about what kind of public servant he would make.

they would also answer:

1. if Romney was in charge of Bain between 1999-2002 because he claims he wasn't

2. Why his IRA account has $20,000,000 PLUS million if he had it for 15 years and the annual max is $15,000 only

3. If he took advantage of LEGAL loopholes, deferments, shelters, etc but is not willing to admit to, and why.

If Romney in fact paid zero in taxes and done so legally, why not admit it? If Romney broke no laws, why the secrecy?

And yes, tax returns have everything to do with exposing who the candidate is. Are you kidding me?

transparecy was lost during the smoke filled locked rooms when they invented Obamacare. Overt and covert bribes were documented like the Louisiana purchase to name one. Couriosity demands looking at rich Democrats too. Lets look at Barbara Boxers, Diane Finestein's and Warren Buffets tax returns too. The notion of tax returns used to incriminate can be used against anyone, liberal or conservative or Independent. The key point to be made is that our present tax system is broken. The laws can be conflicting and confusing. I champion a simple flat tax.

I wouldn't vote for Romney EVER. But it's not about me, it's about the fact that Romney is still on the ticket (assuming he's the chosen one) and if this guy is hiding why he has $20 million in his IRA, or if he was the CEO of Bain when he claims he wasn't, I wouldn't want him as the president even if I didn't vote for him.

I didn't vote for Bush, yet I was stuck with him for 8 years. So sorry if I care who is running for president of the United States of America.

Romney finally announces some kind of tax plan, once examined it gives the top 5% great tax breaks and makes the middle class and poor pay higher taxes for the tax breaks of Romney and rich friends. Once exposed Romney now says his tax plan to put higher taxes on the middle class and poor is not his tax plan. Flip Flop or just using the Ol mental Mitt Wayback Machine retroactively not saying what he said?

Well of course Romney paid taxes every year, just not income taxes! You have to be very specific with this sleazeball. And when you do, like asking have you ever paid less than 13.9% tax rate, then you get the old "I'll be happy to look into that." "I'll have to get back with you on that." And then Romney never does jacksh!t about "that" and his response latter will be that his affairs are private, and "you people" will just have to trust him on that.

Who made the laws about what a candidate is required to reveal ? If Harry doesn't like things, when is he going to get around to trying to change them ? Perhaps his big casino special interests would not like that. Maybe Reid can be sued for slander, making false claims ?

NYPride -- Once again we see the rightwing false equivalency.

Leader Harry Reid is not known for drama, but he should nonetheless take care in repeating something if he isn't going to reveal his source. However, we all know that Romney has had a record of controversy with his taxes as well as lying, so suspicion about things like how Romney got so much money in his IRA is fair game. Not to mention precedence for releasing 8-10 years tax returns as STO for presidential candidates and transparency in the vetting process.

Now let's take Michele Bacnmann and gang, who are alleging infiltration of the Muslim Brotherhood into the White House or what have you. First off there is NO basis for such crazy talk, but worse has been the serious ramifications of such idiocy. We have the Egyptian people thinking the US was behind the election of Morsi and attacking the motorcade of the Secretary of State, and who knows how deep or how long relations there could be affected. Even more serious is that good US citizens are receiving death threats as a result.

There's NO comparison -- NOT even to Fast and Furious/Operation Wide Receiver, and definitely not college records that are not released for any candidate, but especially not for the president who graduated from Harvard magna cum laude.

Science really needs to study the rightwing brain, because the rest of the sane people in this world would like to understand how they can be so ignorant.

The person you should be very fearful of is Obama. His actions have made things worse on the economy, and his wanton disregard for the Constitution and his oath of office (to uphold laws of US) should make you very very much afraid.

Hey--those of you defending Romney's right to hide his tax returns: Remember, lots of prominent conservatives have asked him to do the same. It is not just the Dems or the liberals or Harry Reid asking him to do this. And why was it OK for his father to release more than 10 years of returns, but not Romney? Why did he supply nearly two dozen years to McCain, but he won't release just a few years now? He himself is making this an issue and taking the spotlight off of Obama.

Ask me one question--Why do you care? Is there even one of you who would change their vote if you discovered he paid an effective rate of 30%?

It's not about us. Just like you would never change your vote from Republican... no matter what happens. Hell, your candidate could rape and eat a child on live television, and you would still vote for him just because he is Republican. You are a typical party line voter, doing whatever Rush or Beck tells you, like a good little boy.

But why are you so worried about our reaction? Why are you so concerned with what we will do?

Simple: Because you know, just like we do, that it's not about OUR vote... it's about the independent vote, and how THEY will react. The truth is you are scared s***less. You are terrified that if the truth comes out that Romney paid no INCOME tax, independent voters will turn away. And if they turn away, you lose the election.

So you try to divert the conversation... you try to pretend like it doesn't matter... you try to get us to stop talking about it... all in a desperate attempt to shove the issue under the rug. But it won't work. We are going to keep talking about. And lets be honest, if Obama was accused of not paying taxes, you Republicans would be crucifying him. Hell, you would be so angry that you would be at risk of giving yourself a stroke.

Methinks Mr. Romney doth protest too much.

Harry Reid's comments and the melodrama they've produced aside: Any person being audited by the IRS can be expected to produce anywhere from 5 to 15 years worth of tax information depending on the nature of the audit. Bearing that in mind, is it really so unreasonable for an individual seeking the office of President of the United States to produce 10 years of tax information? It seems to me that would be a pre-requisite to even file the papers declaring your candidacy.

As per Mitt Romney's own father's advice: I would NEVER vote for any candidate of any ideological stripe who is unwilling to provide his tax documentation.

What really shocks me is that none of his opponents in the primaries even thought to pin him down on something so basic...I guess that says something about that crew of geniuses ;~P

ivan, NC -- Agreed. These excuses, like McCain releasing two years -- McCain had to release financial information all the many, many years he has been in the Senate, so that's why two years were sufficient for him -- though he really should have released more. Or the very lame "cry like a schoolgirl" claim that the Dems will scrutinize and criticize whatever he releases, which is the purpose of releasing said returns -- And President Obama has 8 years of returns for the Teapubs to pick through and b!tch about if they want. The "gatewary" argument that Romney (and Cheney) tried to pull, that if they release 8 years the Dems will want 10 -- that old "hypothetical" "what if" crap is so crappy it makes you crap.

If Team Romney and his lemmings want to talk about precedent, let's talk about Romney lying about filing taxes in Massachusetts, and lying about living in his son's basement, and the Olympics documents that were shredded, and putting the Bahama's operation in Ann's name the day before he was sworn in as governor, and taking the hard drives when he left his governorship, etc., etc.

In the movie A Time to Kill, the lawyer gives his closing argument by telling the jury to close their eyes and listen to a story. He describes, in slow and painful detail, the rape of a young 10-year-old girl. He then asks the jury, in his final comment, to: "now imagine she's white." Rightwingers, imagine this:

Conspiracy theories are beginning to spread as well among the fringe, what some are referring to as "Tax-returners." Here are some of the claims being made:

Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh questioned efforts to resolve the doubts of so-called "Tax-returners" about Romney releasing only his 2010 returns. Laimbaugh also says he finds it "stunning" that Romney can't even release this one year in full.

Sheriff Arpaio stated that the 2010 returns "are definitely fraudulent" … "was a computer-generated forgery" because "numeric codes on certain parts of the returns indicate that those parts weren't filled out."

On Fox and Friends they projected pages from Romney's tax returns for review during broadcast, noting it had "been clearly photocopied from a book," casting doubt on the authenticity of the returns. The computer graphics expert Fox News relies upon claims he is being misquoted yet again.

Real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump continues to raise questions about Romney's tax returns, most recently bringing up the spurious claim that Romney was not still in control of Bain Capital after 1999.

Romney has NO idea what it is like to be unfairly attacked about anything. Especially in regard to the most basic transparency expected from all presidential candidates – The most basic requirement team Romney will demand of all individuals being vetted for his VP!

Romney -- Stop throwing temper tantrums, stop making lame excuses, stop blaming the Democrats, and just come clean.

Hillary Clinton shared a condo in New York with Bill, denounced the Chicago Cubs and said she's a Yankee's fan to run for Senator in New York but that was OK? So is laundering money in off shore bank accounts. Ted Kennedy was Senator in Massachussets for decades and Mitt Romney(a conservative Republican) slips in as Governor? That tells both of us that the people of Massachussets were sick and tired of their liberal politics, you'd have to be nuts to think otherwise. What credentials did your guy Obama have when he got nonminated,? None, a community organizer that voted in concert in Congress, but you didn't care about that then. Why should you be concerned about that now What you have is one man that has the ability to make a $hitload of money or one with the ability to blow a $hitload tax payers money! I will say this, if the Obama re-election campaign is as detail oriented as the president, it's gonna be fun to watch them take Romney apart running up to the election. Arpaio spent millions of taxpayer dollars investigating President Obama's birth place because, he said, he received requests from Maricopa County citizens that he do so.

It seems to me there's more reason to suspect Romney of tax evasion than there was to suspect that the President was not born where he said he was.

Ursula-279622 ""The president has now raised taxes on the middle class as so determined by the Supreme Court.".......Hold on there...the president will tax (fine) about 1% of people who can afford it but choose not to buy health insurance...as so determined by the Supreme Court"

You probably also believed Obama's claim of no new taxes on the middle class -"not one dime".

Who do you think will have to pay that tax/penalty? Not the 'rich' because they have health insurance. Not the 'poor' because they get free Medicaid - courtesy of the taxpayers.

That leaves the Middle Class to pay that tax - typically the 'working poor' who don't get insurance through their work. Even with the so-called 'subsidy', they will still not be able to afford the insurance, so in addition to being poor - they will now be TAXED by Obama.

I never cease to be amazed that people still buy Obama's rhetoric - 'Hook, line and sinker'.

I love it when people accuse Mr. Romney of not paying his taxes, especially from his foreign bank accounts.

They don't seem to realize that income taxes only tax, wait for it, income.

If money in the bank is only producing interest, you only pay taxes on that interest. You do not, should not, and are not expected to pay taxes on the money in the bank because that money is not income, and have already had taxes paid for in previous years.

It is like this. Say you have earned $30,000 in a year. You paid your taxes on it, all your expenses, and have $5,000 left over. You want to save that money for some future event (like buying a home, or retirement, or whatever). The way libbies want it, you should also pay taxes each year on the $5,000 you put in the bank because you have the money and everyone doesn't (spread the wealth ideology). I'm sorry, but I refuse to pay any tax on money that has already been taxed.

Plus, if you honestly think that Mr. Romney did not pay any taxes at all, then you do not know anything about AMT. Go look it up, I dare you.

This is all part of the Obama deflection plan. FACT IS, Obama has no record to run on, nor does he have anything for the future that will improve things. Instead, there has been a series of calculated attacks to deflect attention from Obama's abysmal record. (AND issues like, did he lie to the Publishing company when they promoted him as a man born in Kenya, or the birth certificate that says he was born in Hawaii. One way or another, he is lying, but that's OK because he's a Democrat.) Like I said before, only idiots believe this stuff. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. How anyone, even the most hardcore rightwing conspiracy theorist can fall for Romney is mind-bending. The man is a scam, a blatant lying, obvious con artist.

Well what can we expect when folks like willowbrook above refuse to learn a damn thing (at least read other posts and the articles). This forum should allow collapse of posts like the one above that just repeats the same old debunked crap.

For all of you "show us your application and transcript" nut jobs: let us assume, just for the sake of argument, that they are released. What will they prove, that 25-30 years ago, "Barry" Obama might not have had the grades which, if he was a white guy, would have gotten him into Harvard University Law School ? And your point is ? I'm sure that there are many students who got into Harvard based on something other than purely their academic record.

Also, lets assume Barack Hussein Obama put down that his name was Barry Soereto on his initial application, does that mean he informed the U.S. Department of State that he was no longer a U.S. Citizen ? Hardly.

All you birthers need to get a life. PRESIDENT Barack Hussein Obama IS a natural born United States Citizen, fully qualified to be President of the United States. I know he is black, and that is the real issue. You can't stand the FACT that a black man was elected to President of the United States and the Republican Party, thanks to the Tea Party and birthers like you, is so incompetant that it is unable to come up with a qualified candidate to defeat him.

Anyone who was at all a decent candidate would be 10 or 15 points ahead of current President at this point in the election cycle. Instead, the GOP has Willard Mitt Romney whose only response to attacks is, "Yes I did" and "You shut up." My niece in First Grade can come up with something better than that. The Democratic party will continue to beat Romney up about his tax returns all the way until he either releases them or loses the election. Of course, if he does release them, we will find out that he probably has been lying to the American people all along.

dirp -- The Flat Earth Society will believe anything. They believe WMD were taken to Syria, even though Bush himself said there were no WMDs. They believe there is infiltration of the Muslim Brotherhood in our government, though the source Frank Gaffney also accuses Grover Norquist -- so funny (I once made fun of conspiracy theories saying Norquist was the long-lost brother of Morsi based on how they look related).

The Birther conspiracy becomes even more absurd when one listens to Rep. King:

KING: We went down into the Library of Congress and we found a microfiche there of two newspapers in Hawaii each of which had published the birth of Barack Obama. It would have been awfully hard to fraudulently file the birth notice of Barack Obama being born in Hawaii and get that into our public libraries and that microfiche they keep of all the newspapers published.

And yet he goes on to speculate in such a delusional way that many are calling for a psychological examination of this man, because this is only one of many incidents in which he rambles on in a nonsensical way that is just crazy. And he's only one of the growing list of crazies in the Teapublican Party.

What's with the GOP/TP? At least the Dems are telling their supporters not to vote for a conspiracy theorist running who is running as a Democrat. The Republicans better get their act together or they may well go the way of the Whigs. Romney is just a con man who is only successful when he runs in a weak field. When he has a strong opponent like Ted Kennedy of President Obama, it becomes obvious he is not qualified. The GOP must do better than this if they want to remain relevant.

I see that this is a dilemma, mainly for Mitt. Reid made an ungainly attack, I'll agree to that, but I think it was more of a trick to force Mitt's hands on his tax returns. Romney responded, but we technically can't know if he is true or not. Reid is most likely wrong, but Romney might be wrong, and so we cannot believe either of them. This is more pressing for Romney, as he is running for election. Either he has to release his tax returns and end this whole thing now, or endure the pain. Mitt, please grow a pair and either put up or shut up.

When did it become a bad thing to be 'white' and 'male' in america.

The same day when it became bad to be poor and/or middle class in America.

    Brianb-999431

I sincerely hope Romney holds his ground on not releasing any more of his returns. It's not required and if he does release them it will show weakness by bowing down to the liberals demands. The liberals aren't going to vote for him no matter if he released 20 years... it's a no win situation.

Neither is it mandatory for you to release your birth certificate, unless you are either black or a Democrat. Why didn't you say the same damn thing when Obama was forced to release his @!$%#ing birth certificate???? Either you right-wingers are racist, or plainly disgraceful. Pick your choice.

PERIOD!

Okay, if Romney's tax returns are none of our business, how is it the Republicans' business to see Obama's @!$%#ing birth certificate??? For God's sake, Romney's tax plan cuts taxes for the wealthy and raises taxes on the middle class!!! If he wants to get support for his tax plan, we ought to know what tax rate he is paying, to see if he (like all of those so-called "job creators) are being "crushed by the burdens of over-taxation" so much that they cannot afford to buy a 12,000 sq mile mansion!!!

Keep up your false accusations liberals... it's you that are starting to look like total idiots and fools.

Ah, I see you forgot the birthers and the Tea Party....

    fenderbluesjr

Mike-416, "so Obama has to produce all this nonsensical garbage to quell the birthers" and "yet Mitt can't give a few years tax returns"? First of all this is fair game political witch hunting, the Dem's are digging into a multi millionaires tax returns to find an inappropriate filing.

Name me the last president who's birth certificate was forced to be disclosed publicly. Secondly, name me the last president in the past 30 to 50 years who hasn't released at least 5 years of tax returns. If the public deserves to know Obama's academic records in Harvard, as you righties say, then the public also deserves to know Romney's tax filings. Transparency cuts both ways.

By comparison the Republican's asked to see a birth certificate. What are you nuts? All your guy had to do was produce a birth certificate, but he dragged his ass for political reasons.

Same thing that Romney's doing right now.

Secondly, they are both viable questions, several years of tax returns may take some time preparing. But a mere birth cirtificate? What was the hold up kids? I've had a laminated copy of mine for years to get into Mexico before you needed a PassPort.

Once again, name me the last president whose birth certificate was forcibly disclosed. The holdup is that you are essentially inviting yourself to being called a racist, or at least biased, since no president's citizenship has been put into serious denial except this one.

You "clowns" want to stick a fiber-optic up Mitt's financial a$$ and are squealling because you aint getting it fast enough! Bill Daley runs O's campaign, Chicago Machine Democrat style, if you are not discusted by that, then you are a part of it!

Actually, we aren't getting it AT ALL. And by they, the "Chicago Political Machine" is a helluva lot better than the post-Citizens United "democracy."

JANUARY,20,13 THE END OF AN ERROR!

Hell yea; we're gonna kick those fascist right-wingers out!

    RedSoxRule

alex, you dumb twit. Have you even bothered to look at Romney's tax plan?

I have, and personally, if I was a conservative I wouldn't like it.

    He wants to ELIMINATE loopholes.

Unfortunately, he never stated what loopholes he would eliminate, and many of those that are ruled out of being restricted or eliminated greatly benefit the wealthiest Americans (like the deduction for savings). Not to mention that he actually cuts taxes for the wealthy by repealing the estate tax (prevents inheritance-based aristocracies), the AMT (attempts to force the wealthy to pay a decent rate), and cutting taxes by 20% (greatly affects top two rates). And if Romney wants to pay for it (which I think he will have to, what with the deficit hawks chirping around), he will have to reduce numerous middle class deductions due to the lack of wealthy deductions, raising taxes on the middle class and on the poor. If he cut spending, he'd hurt the middle class since only discretionary programs are up on the chopping block.

Morons like you should not even be allowed to vote.

Ahh, dipping into the disenfranchisement argument, eh???? Typical right-winger.

Libbys just don't want to hear truth or facts, they just want to listen to lies from Obama and run off half cocked.

At least we know that you need revenues to cut the deficit; hell, even The Economist says that.

Sad. No wonder this country is so screwed.

Yea, since right-wing morons like you can't seem to compromise with or even talk to people across the aisle without lying or being reasonable....

Freshieee -- Great post. Last night on the news, they played video of Romney over the years when ever he is asked about releasing his tax returns. The saying "thou dost protest too much" absolutely applies to Romney.

Like a poker player, you can tell Romney is lying the more adamant he becomes, "vigorously disputing" using a string of strong words (e.g., patently false, etc.) raising his voice and hyperventilating. And the old"I'm rubber, you're glue" tactic of going on the offense and attacking his opponents on that very issue -- demanding Ted Kennedy's returns, and worse after all his opponents in Massachusett's released their tax records, he went after the spouse!

Add to that Eric Fuhrman, who has been at Romney's side all these years, who also goes hyperbolic over the matter. Now Fuhrman is comparing speculation about Romney paying less than the 13.9% tax rate, and possibly no taxes for as much as 10 years to McCarthyism. Not too over the top, hmm?

And the last time Romney & Co. were so adamant about Romney paying taxes in Massachusetts, he was busted for lying about it. Then afterwards they claimed Romney paid the Massachusetts taxes retroactively, and when asked for proof, they said folks would just have to trust Romney on that.

"...insulting to Americans' intelligence" -- How stupid do they think voters are, pulling out the same old failed tactics? Well some are stupid enough, but most voters won't fall for this crap again. Just the fact they are trying to do it again is pathetic and disgusting, certainly not what folks look for in a president, Commander in Chief, and leader of the free world.

Romney -- The man is a scam, and he's not in it for you.

So those of you who are demanding Romney's tax returns. Ask me one question--Why do you care? Is there even one of you who would change their vote if you discovered he paid an effective rate of 30%?

First of all, I wouldn't even vote for him if he paid 100%. Secondly, we care because we want to see how Romney will benefit from his own tax plan; a great way to determine what a leader's economic principles are is to see how he would fare under his own tax plan. I've read the Tax Policy Center summary, and apparently Romney will do very well; he may not pay any lower rates (although many of his loopholes will stay intact), but many of his rich friends will get huge payoffs. That apparently means that either (A) he knows nothing about " tax fairness," or (B) his real priorities are enriching his fellow businessmen at the expense of the rest of the population. Take your pick; I personally think it's mostly A.

Romney claims to know how the economy works. He even says that his tax plan will increase taxes on the wealthy or keep them steady, both of which are false. So technically, he is lying through his teeth. Plus we have to see if he has integrity; Obama and his predecessors had the integrity to release their tax returns (and Obama even disclosed his own @!$%#ing birth certificate). Why shouldn't Romney be held to the same standard??? Is he somehow above every previous president and candidate (including his own father) just because he is wealthy??? So much for America being the "Land of the Free."

Maybe Reid can be sued for slander, making false claims?

Then Romney can be sued for false claims as well...

Actually, when the issue initially came up, the president produced what most people get now, a short form, confirming his birth. However, that was not good enough for the birthers (white supremacists in another form) who demanded "a copy of the long form birth certificate" just to prove the point. The entire issue was not asked of John McCain, who was NOT born in the United States. He did not have to prove his ability to be President of the United States. However, John McCain is an old white guy, so of course he must be eligible.

Willowbrook, do you have any clue what "Paid no taxes" means??? It means he moved so much cash offshore and/or used many loopholes not available to the many that he owed hardly no taxes when he filed. His tax return he released showed only 13% of his income was taxed, but the years he won't release may show 5% or 0% tax owed. Do you really want as President who wants to hide how he accumulated so much money? He didn't get such as high net worth from working at Bain. He is making many millions from other sources. Sources he doesn't want anyone to know about, but his tax returns will show.

How low can you go? Simply amazing to see the Senate Majority leader stand on the floor and just make up a story. Harry Reid is a liar, plain and simple. He offers no proof, and yet the entire Democratic Party rallies to his side. There is just no moral or ethical standard too low for the Democratic Party to go. What a pathetic excuse for a leader in the party, and how stupid are those that elect a liar like Harry Reid? Hillary Clinton accused Obama of lying and running a dirty campaign against her in 2008. Well the writing is on the wall, Obama and Democratic Party will say or do anything to keep power, even tell and outright lie on the Senate floor.

    Hey Mittens,

It's for YOU to put up. Put up your tax returns. That's all it will take to make everybody shut up. It must be pretty bad if you can't make that simple effort. Your mouth is your worst enemy.

Since when in America is the presumptive "innocent until proven guilty," not applicable and the burden of proof not on the accuser. So, unless Obama issued another executive order that we missed countermanding this long standing rule, put up or shut up, Harry Reid, remains the order of the day.

    • So you pay taxes every year do you Mitt. Well -- my 12 year old granddaughter pays taxes every year too. (sales taxes) I don't doubt you followed the law and paid exactly what you had to. But you likely paid a very, very small percentage of your income in taxes and that's the problem. The real issue is NOT what you paid but the system that allows some family making 60 grand a year paying a larger percentage of their income in taxes than you pay. If you actually released your tax returns that could start a middle class backlash that you and your rich biddies couldn't stop.
      #1.159 - Mon Aug 6, 2012 5:26 PM EDT

Absolutely amazing that the only thing the Democrats can grab a hold is a rumor Reid already admitted he has no basis for saying. This is absolutely pathetic.

Here's the simple truth - if Romney broke the tax law, Obama's administration (aka IRS) would be all over him with legal action. Hmmm that ain't happening is it?

And oh btw seems to me we have a double standard here, Obama appointed a known tax fraud artist in his cabinet -Timothy Geithner.

How about Obama stands on his record. How about Obama propose meaningful policies that aren't a blatant attempt at buying votes.

The Democrats are running from any definitive platform statements and relying on mudslinging...

OK libs show me concrete facts to refute my statements. CONCRETE FACTS!

        #1.160 - Mon Aug 6, 2012 6:36 PM EDT

As American Citizens, we all pay taxes everyday, and a lot of taxes, like sales taxes, State Tax, Social Securty Tax, etc., so for Romney to simply say he pays taxes and a lot of them, well, don't we all!

I'm sure Romney paid a lot of sales taxes on all those cars he bought, and all those houses he bought, but did he pay capital gains taxes? He didn't say.

What Romney DIDN'T say was that he pays a lot of "income taxes", because he probably doesn't.

Unless and until Romney releases his tax returns, we can safely assume that Harry Reid is right, and that's why Romney won't release his tax returns, because Romney has too much to hide.

I just want to see how much he paid in the way of taxes, just like I would with any presidential candidate. Of all the possible secrets he might have, this one is just too obvious to look past. He has a lot of money. He has made a lot of money. He wants to be leader of the free world. Let's see the returns. Obama did it as a candidate. So did McCain. So did Bush. So has every major-party nominee in the past several decades or so, at least. It's standard stuff. Why not Mitt? What's he hiding?

          #1.162 - Tue Aug 7, 2012 4:35 PM EDT

I'm pretty sure Romney paid taxes, and maybe even a lot of taxes, but that does not mean that he paid income taxes or even filled out a form 1040. If he had no income and was living on investments, or rolled over tax differed investments into an IRA it is possible that he could maneuver his wealth in such a way that he had no tax liabilities and therefor no income tax statements. All that may be legal but highly embarrassing for one that wants to preside over you and me. My internal revenuer brother's comment was Kings didn't pay taxes either, taxes were paid to the king.

It cracks me up that the Right don't see:

              1) the irony that it was MITT'S FATHER that essentially set the precedent for multiple years of tax returns made transparent and stated that to not do so suggested there was something to hide,

              2) the total double standard in complaining about furthering a rumor without substantiation re: Mitt and the entire birther movement, B.S. related to college documents, etc when things have vetted and accepted by some pretty high standards AND many courts have thrown out birth certificate cases stating that it's been settled.

              3) that it would be EASY to quell the rumor, fit into the norm of pretty much all Presidential candidates for many years AND show people Mitt has a willingness to have even a little bit of transparency about him. All he has to do is actually release some tax records.

I just got off the phone with a former pool-boy for Harry Reid who confirmed the following:
-Reid makes loves to farm animals
-Reid is an active participant in a Satanic cult that routinely slaughters randomly kidnapped street people
-Reid and Nancy Pelosi have "clothes switching" parties during which they role-play and smash kittens with tire-irons
-Reid has 27 wives, is a Grand Kleigal in the Ku Klux Klan, and is gay....

              WOW!!

Dem4, all those things take a minute of concentration. Maybe even a bit of elementary math. They always grab their head and say "don't confuse me with the details". Awfully sad state we are in, when its seems strange it probably is, if they offer no agenda then it is strange, and no details to go with it. A reasonable person would not accept such a position from a presidential candidate.

I am sure Romney would be happy to comply if it were required by law. Or is this righteous indignation only because Obama is trailing in every poll that doesn't over sample registered Democrats?

Willards father, George Romney stated, "just releasing 1 or 2 years returns can be manulpulated to make a candidate look good", so he released 12 years returns. Those showed he paid an average of over 36%. I doubt Willards half the man his father was or paid 1/4 the average in taxes.

You're reasoning is all wrong. The accusation is that he did not pay taxes. The only way to prove him wrong is to show you did pay taxes. You cannot prove a negative, just a positive. Just like Hussein could not prove he did not have WMD, but we could have proven him wrong if we found he did have WMD. Like I cannot prove there is no god, you have to prove to me there is one. Simple Math.

My guess is the answer would be "NO" ..... they would still piss and moan, bitch and complain about his tax returns. Considering how the leftist media distorts Romney's every utterance, one could understand Mr. Romneys caution. you are forgetting one secret igredient: this tax thing has been following Mitt since 1994 when he ran for Senate seat against Kennedy. The issue also came up when he ran for Gov of Mass in 2002, and then again in 2008 when running for president. Now in 2012 you would think that Romney had half a brain and released them - of course if he has nothing to hide.

He showed the tax returns to McCain, yet McCain decided to pick Palin. Why? I have no clue but neither do you.

This is not a new topic, this has been going on for almost 20 years. Yet Romney is either too stupid or too crooked to show his returns. This is not going away - it hasn't for 20 years!

Now show me any history of President Obama and Sandusky, or SeekingSanity beating "his" wife.

If Romney does not respond to body punches, he goes down. If Romney does try to explain, he is wide open for the knockout punch because he paid no taxes and will try to spin it retroactively in his mental wayback machine.

Everybody pays taxes of some sort, and with the disposable income Romney enjoys, I'm sure he pays a lot of taxes. But the issue is INCOME taxes...not property tax, or sales tax, or payroll tax...INCOME taxes. And that's why we want to see his INCOME tax returns.

As a matter of fact, 35,000 wealthy households (or 0.88%) paid NO taxes in 2009. This was an article in 2012 Bloomberg News.

reality check; you should read Keith Brackett post above yours. He explains why 48% don't pay income taxes....you guessed it......they don't earn enough for the entire year. Kinda hard to argue about mulch-millionaires not paying any income taxes when those others don't make what Rommney makes everyday for their entire working year. Not a lot of common sense in that argument.

Well Ursula, he certainly never paid any payroll taxes because he evaded them by being paid in stock and 'carried interest' so he wouldn't be required to pay such a plebian tax like the rest of us who work for a living. As for property taxes, yes he pays those, but he lies to the states in which he has homes, changing his tax returns each year to reflect the 'home' state that will require him to pay the least amount of taxes. He tried that when he was running for governor of MA. Said he didn't file in Utah, but got caught in that lie during the time it took his accountants to retroactively change those returns. Same as when he retroactively retired from Bain so he wouldn't be held accountable for the massive outsourcing his company did, yet he testified in MA that he was not only a MA resident during the years he spent in Utah, but was also back in MA quarterly for board meetings at Bain. Clearly the guy is a liar who thinks we're all too stupid to recognize that he doesn't have a time machine and even though the tax laws may allow him to retroactively file his returns or retire as CEO and owner of Bain, he can't change what we now know are his lies.

He'll never release those returns because they contain enough evidence to try him for multiple felonies. They would find he lied to get on the ballot in MA and served as governor without the correct qualifications, he's evaded taxes at every turn and he's used his Caymen Island account to act as a pass through so his wife's horse company could be registered as a foreign company thereby avoiding taxes on any profits they may earn from that business.

And paying "a lot of taxes" (even if they are all income taxes, which hasn't been clarified) doesn't necessarily mean he's paid a very high PERCENTAGE or that he hasn't used a million loopholes to get out of his reasonable share. He doesn't want people to see how he's used tax policy because then they might actually figure out how that could translate into his willingness to use tax policy against the middle class if he were to become President. It's not a small thing.

Those 48% most definitely pay taxes: sales tax, fuel tax, property tax (either direct or through rent to the landlord who is passing on his property tax, etc).

But those who arguing whether he paid his fair share, I'm sure Mitt only paid what he owed. Just like loudmouthed DNC supporting billionaires who constantly point to the unfairness but still only pay what they owe.

And seriously, if Mitt hadn't paid any taxes you don't think that by now someone in the IRS wouldn't have leaked one of Mitt's returns?

The fact maybe he got a lot of tax credits really is not a reflection on him. It's a reflection on our broken tax system.

              Snark lady,

Tax evasion is against the law, tax avoidance, thru legal means, is entirely acceptable behavior on the part of millions of Americans, including you, me, and anyone else that owns a home, or itemizes deductions on their tax returns.

"He'll never release those returns because they contain enough evidence to try him for multiple felonies."

Your accusations of multiple felonies are ludicrous, do you actually think that Romney is not audited on a yearly basis? His tax returns are no doubt, as squeeky clean as clean can be. In his shoes, I would hire the best tax accountants and tax attorneys available, which I'm sure he has, and would follow their instructions explicitly, so as to minimize my tax liability LEGALLY!!.

Folks like yourself made fun of the birthers (rightfully so in my opinion), and you have now set yourself up to be the laughingstock of the righties, good job!!

Living in L.A. - there is no reason to believe for one minute that Mitt is audited on a yearly basis. In fact, there is every reason to believe he - like most people - is not. He would only be audited if the IRS had found problems with his taxes. That doesn't mean he hasn't done anything improper - just that he hasn't been caught. Many cheats are not caught for years.

Folks like you who pretend to know it all continue to make the far right laughingstocks!

If this righteous indignation works as well as the Chick-fil-A protest Romney should get a huge boost. As if the majority of the American people are really going to fall for Harry Reid's fabrication. After all the vast majority of Americans are not registered Democrats who will jump on the bandwagon without so much as one shred of proof. Yeah, that is the type of people we need to lead our nation. Just don't forget the funny nose and glasses when you show up to vote.

Seeking Sanity.....you are wrong on one point. The IRS does random auditing. I have been auditied numerous times....most often when I filed using standard deductions, not itemized.

All Mr. Romney needs to do is show cancelled checks to the IRS and Harry Reid will need a super-sized egg scraper to remove the egg on his face. But there are other ways to prove the payment of taxes as well.

If this represents the "best the Dems can do" to try and force the situation .... they could be pissing directly into a really stiff breeze, only to have it come right back at them and smack them in the lips. Maybe Harry needs to get his swim goggles ready !

Even billionaires have a less than 7% chance of being audited. Releasing his returns would show if he was one of the 10's of thousands of Americans who took advantage of amnesty over his unreported offshore accounts? If so even if under amnesty he was absolved of criminal charges he still committed a felony.

With such an opportunity in hand I can't imagine a reason so bad that Romney still won't release his tax returns.

Tell me that if it was President Obama refusing to release his tax returns you would be telling me we can just trust him like the republicans have done about his birth certificate. Right?

              Mutt,

It is time that you released your tax returns. It is time for you to put up or shut up.

The only issue that Mutt has been adamant about, something that he has not backtracked, back pedalled, flip flopped, or outright lied about, is his refusal to release his tax returns.

My guess, he just set himself up as a liar when he said that he has paid taxes every year, which may be true but was it the correct amount that he owed.

Have been meaning to tell you for a while now, every time I see one of your posts I get a little jolt, because my late father - a staunch Democrat , of course - was named Rod. If you're going to use that screen name, you've got some big shoes to fill. And I mean that literally - he wore like a size 13 or something.

Now if you tell me that you hail from Williamsport, PA, were once president of a labor union, liked Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold and Patsy Cline, and could never get enough ring balogna from the Amish place at the Bazaar of All Nations, you're gonna really freak me out!

Crystal - since you appear to be missing a large portion of your brain - let me explain this - yet again. Everyone's college transcripts are sealed - yours would have been had you ever attended college. From Outside the Beltway:

The common response to the points I’m raising here usually boils down to mentioning the fact that The New Yorker managed to get its hands on George W. Bush’s Yale transcripts during the 2000 campaign. They didn’t get them from the Bush campaign and, technically, whoever released them was violating Federal laws regarding the privacy of education records. Several months later, The Washington Post managed to get its hands on Al Gore’s education records, again without the consent of the campaign and in apparent violation of Federal law.

Now why don't you crawl back to the gutter you came out of - oh that's right, the rats there don't want you either. You are total filth!

Wait a minute - Obama's father is Frank Marshall Davis??? This is HUGE!!! So why did he name his kid Barack Hussein Obama? And was Davis born in Kenya, too, or does this mean that the President really is an American?

As for Larry Sinclair, if you're going to insist on repeating these idiotic stories, at least get the, uhhh, "facts" straight. Larry Sinclair's the one who wrote the book - the "lover" was former choirmaster Donald Young, and Sinclair claimed that Obama and Jeremiah Wright were involved in his murder. Of course, if you google "Larry Sinclair", you also get reports that Obama murdered him, too, and cleverly made it look like a hit and run - but only after Joe Biden and his son Beau once had Sinclair arrested in Washington D.C. just for giving a speech. Personally, I don't think he's really dead; I think Eric Holder's got him stashed away somewhere out in Area 51, where the space aliens who are still alive are conducting horrible scientific experiments on him while Elvis feeds him grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I mean, I read it all on the Internet, so it must be true, right?

I believe the issue with respect to Romney not releasing his tax returns could very well center around the amnesty program for felony tax evaders who did not report funds stashed in foreign banks as required by U.S. tax law. My simple question to Mitt Romney is "Did you take advantage of the amnesty program for not reporting your foreign bank holdings and if yes how many years did you take advantage of the program?"

Anyone notice how whenever the Democrats attack Romney he goes up in the polls? I say keep up this lame campaign strategy and it will be a blow out in November. Obama simply has no record to run on, or he would.

Clearly the amount of time Romney spends defending his decision not to release more returns hurts him or he wouldn't keep responding. He'd release more if he didn't think he'd take a worse hit by doing so. What's he hiding?

Add Romney's mega-inflated 401k to the list of questions and that may well be one of the reasons he's not willing to release his tax returns. He's been asked to release them since he ran for Governor of Mass. He refused then too. He submitted 23 years of returns to McCain when he was being vetted for VP; why won't he submit those same returns to the American people? Because whatever he's hiding would be enough to change the course of his candidacy.

Why am I dumb? Because your president is a communist? Apparently there is a faction of people in this country that have no clue (like yourself) as to the workings of a communist country. Go to Russia, Cuba, China. It does not prove qualification directly- It does answer the question of the lie he has already been caught in: that he had nothing to do with BAIN AFTER 1999.It's come out that he was CEO and stockholder until 2002. It has come out that they wanted him back at board meetings. He has said that some of their questionable deals were done after he left the company, yet won't give the one proof that he did not profit from BAIN as it's CEO during that time. Just doing things legally does not make them ethical- and that does make a difference.

Wow. Fox news does really appeal to simple folk. I almost feel sorry for how misinformed you are.

Obama provided is short form birth certificate just like everyone else who has ever run for office.

People pressed for the long form and got it - exposing them as the clueless geniuses they are.

Gov. Romney has to build trust amongst the American people - he can't do that if he is perceived as hiding decisive information.

Fast and Furious started under the Bush Administration called "Operation Wide Receiver". The agents in Arizona continued this flawed program without Mr. Holder's knowledge.

If the Repugtards and the idiot Issa wanted to know the truth, they would start with Mulkasey the A.G. under Bush.

Only an ignoramous would begin an investigation at the end instead of the beginning!

When Mr. Holder found out about this operation, he stopped it immediately.

Of course Fox and the Hound News left out these crucial details.

Bush and Mulkasey are the culprits!!!

Issa is trying to deflect Mr. Holder's attention away from the states that are trying to steal the election: Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc.

Willard will still lose!!! He is fake and a tax cheat!!!

                      Obama 2012!!! Holder 2016!!!!!

The Supreme Court stated that the Health Plan could charge those that don't go an buy insurance a penalty?tax. That is not all of the Middle Class! Stop lying to people! American People - please do yourself a favor and read the bill, I know it is not exciting, however, it does benefit you to know the truth.

I really tired of the lies on both sides of the fence; Gov. Romney has calculated that he will certainly lose the election if his past tax returns ever see the light of day - plan fact. Which in itself speaks volumes - again Senator John McCain did not choose Mitt as a VP for a reason!!! Come people wake up.

He also has 100 million in a retirement account that has a $5,000 a year cap. How'd he do that?

Larry, When you do not understand tax law, as you obviously do not, you should not be answering stupid questions. Taxpayers have long been able to make non-deductible deposits into their IRA accounts and I do not recall limitations. You do not get the reduction from AGI, but you can contribute anyway.

Once contributed, the deposited amounts can grow and, depending on how wise their investments were, that growth can be significant.

Furthermore, rollovers from pension and profit-sharing plans are also possible.

Funny he'd choose to do this in a foreign country known as a tax haven. As for your other point I didn't answer anything I asked a question. And just because it's possible to do so legally neither I nor you can ever know if it was legally done if he doesn't release his returns. You may accept having 100 million in an account capped at 5K a year in a tax haven country as normal but most consider it suspicious. You need to be a tax attorney to ask a question in your world?

Of course he's not the only one as over 30,000 people took advantage of the IRS amnesty program for undeclared oversea's accounts but there's only 1 person running for POTUS who has oversea's accounts. Was he one of those who took advantage of the IRS amnesty program and if so shouldn't we know that? If he had undeclared accounts he was committing a felony and being absolved under an amnesty program doesn't mitigate what he did.

Don't you think voting 33 times to do away with Obamacare (at a very high cost to the taxpayer) is just a LITTLE ridiculous and time consuming when there are MORE important things to deal with....like the Farm Subsidy that they failed to pass before they took off on one of their MANY vacations. We pay their salaries yet none of us get as many vacations as they do....why is that?

Sharriannie: I think you are deflecting and changing the topic..typical when you can't refute with facts and common sense of the topic discussed. By the way, seeking sanity is absolutely correct; all administrations, both parties, have had their families, including children go aboard for vacations on the taxpayer dime. Nothing new or unusual, just another republican stating nonsense and trying to make something trivial negative.

Sometime we just have to use a little common sense. Look at Romney's 2011 and 2010 tax returns and you will see he paid over $3 million dollars in Federal Taxes each year. He also paid over a million dollars each year in state taxes and $250,000 each year in property taxes. How can any responsible new outlet even carry this story when it is easy to see that Mitt Romney pays almost $5 million dollars a year in taxes? Oh yeah this is MSNBC, which does not come close to being fair or honest.

For those of you who still want more data on Romney's finances, go to http://www.mittromney.com/learn/mitt/tax-return/main and you will find 1040s for 2010 and 2011, Federal Financial Disclosures for 2007, 2011 and 2012, State Financial Disclosures for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. If that is not enough for you that is only because nothing ever will be.

Bill - you're a liar - Romney hasn't FILED HIS 2011 taxes yet so you have no way of knowing what is in them - and you wouldn't even if he'd filed them until he made them public. He has admitted he filed an extension for 2011 - won't file until 10/15/2012.

The "federal financial disclosures" listed on the website are just numbers his accountants filled in - not necessary indicative of his actual returns. They are not up to the standards everyone else has released. But, again, exactly the nonsense we have come to expect from Mitt!

As usual - the far righties just outright lie!

Willard is a draft-dodging, pandering, lying, incompetent tax cheat. He knows that revealing at least 3 years of his taxes will probably show that for 10 years he did not pay any taxes and he might go to jail.

He has calculated that only submitting 1/2 year of his taxes is less risky than submitting what the other candidates did.

America should realize that to be second fiddle to the numbnuts Palin speaks volumes about his qualifications.

I don't much care if Mitt's returns have passed through the IRS without problem. That's really not the issue. The issue is that he apparently cannot stand to have the public know a) all the ways he's used tax loopholes (that need to be changed) to his great advantage, as well as how he earned his money through stock and carry over vs salary to avoid the taxation (another thing that should be changed), and b) that the proportion of taxes he's paid would likely anger many, many hard working Americans and further the label of "out of touch".

I'm not going with any illegal activity conspiracy theory. It's much more basic. The cover up is always worse than the "crime" even when there is no actual (illegal) crime.

Excuse me, but what branch of the service did Obama serve? Maybe, I should ask also what country. The folks here are so partisan that I can't read any more. Romney has paid his taxes faithfully and that will come out. you folks won't like that he paid only what was legally required. What would you have wanted him to do, do his taxes and then say I should pay more, nobody else does, but I should and ask how much the government wants. Grow up. Just because you want Obama to finish destroying our economy it isn't necessary to demonize Romney. Grow up! Watch you wish for, you just might get it.

hey Wally....go read the tax code. it contains a little somthing known as a presumption. this means that all tax returns are presumed to be correct so that all those wonderful refund checks us little people look forward to each year are processed quicky and efficiently. If the IRS took the time to review every line of every return and their accompaning documentation we wouldn't get our returns for a year or more. Now, fortunately for folks like Romney that presumption works for them also. He has admitted to being audited in the past and I would speculate that now the IRS is taking a closer look at those many thousands of pages of his prior returns (unfortunately the statute of limitations is only 7 years though) to determine whether he has committed any crimes. unfortunately for the electorate it will take them longer than the next 3 months to go through them, but won't it be fun when he's charged shortly after the new year?

i do believe that the deflections of how many years he should release have told me all that i need to know about him, and that isn't a good thing if he wanted my vote.

Actually, I have to side with Wally on this one.

The IRS has Romney's tax returns, if anything is materially wrong with them, the White House, along with the rest of us, would know by now.

The Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service is a political appointee. If his boss, the Secretary of the Treasury, requests that the Commissioner review Mitt Romney's tax returns (along with Santorum's, Backman's, Perry's, and every other potential candidate, to include Obama) for any reason, there is no reason the Commissioner would refuse. Neither the President, Secretary of the Treasury, or Commissioner of Internal Revenue has done nothing wrong as long as the review of the candidate's tax returns is conducted within, and by, the IRS.

If there is something materially wrong with any candidate's tax returns, the IRS would initiate an investigation. Obviously the Secretary of the Treasury would want the investigation pursued vigorously to determine whether there was, or was not, any wrongdoing.

There is no reason to believe that the Secretary of the Treasury would delay such an investigation until after the election. Especially, as it would be to the democrats advantage that any problems be brought out into the public spotlight before the election.

Since that hasn't happened, I don't believe there is any problem.

Obviously, as POTUS Obama could violate the law and order Romney's tax returns to be turned over to the White House. The public would never know if that happened, but one could expect "leaks" of Romney's tax return information. It's not as if "leaks" have never happened before.

                                            Once again, as that hasn't happened, I don't think there's a problem.

Basically, all I think it is is the Obama camp trying to embarrass Romney over a position he has taken. And if he shows the tax returns, he will have folded under pressure.

                                            Nothing more than pure politics.

Romney said he paid a lot in taxes all years but $25,000 could be considered a lot of money but not on 40 million income. Why doesn't he at least indicate what percentage he paid? His father averaged over 36%.

If you made 500million in investments and made 25K it is not taxes at 36% because the Government wants people to invest on companies. He already paid taxes on the money he used to invest. So he shouldn't have to pay another 36% on the same money. He also get deductions on money donated to charities, (you now the things liberials love, but don't want to contrubute to) so that is not counted as it should be. He made his own money. I don't know why Liberials especially the rich ones hate the ideal of people making money and giving other the chance too, by creating wealth and more jobs. But I guess we would have more social programs with out people like them.

Otherwise for the most part this is just more sideshow BS distracting us from the real issue such what do either candidate really plan to do to help our country? My guess, not much; don't forget both sides got us to where we are today and at the end of the day, the party specific BS gets us nowhere except to divide and keep them in power. So stop the personal attacks already, grow up, and really tell us why and what you will do. I'm so tired of this useless nonsense. Can we please get a 3rd or 4th party to vote for finally?

                                                It is time

Oh and unemployment has gone from 8.2% to 8.3%...and he's already on tv saying how we are doing better. Obummer is such a liar.

All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right! [pumps fist].”

If Romney was elected no one applying for any major post with his administration such as cabinet members, senior officials, judges he'd appoint etc. would all be required to submit at least 6 years returns. Should the standards be lower for the president then those who work for him?

I do not know of any person that paid taxes every year, as even Clinton would probably say. because you don't start paying until you make enough money to do so. I do not know of any that had to pay for thier first 14 years of their life. I didn't on my first job, becausing starting in Noveber i didn't make enough to do so.) The IRS watches The rich Republicans very closely, and any misteps would have instant repercussions. So apperently your dog doen't hunt in this case.

Alan - not sure what college courses or papers have have to do with Gov. Romney not releasing his tax records.

Now if he got paid for teaching then sure, if you are looking for term papers he wrote then no. Just like I don't care about college papers that Gov. Romney wrote.

The tax returns are valid because they show that the candidate(s) is/are on the up and up and has no financial ties that can be perceived as a conflict of interest.

and we actually already know what Romney was doing in school. In HS he was a bully showing off his father's money and power and in college he was dodging the draft because he's a chicken.

Obama's college transcripts are absolutely irrelevant.

He has been out of college how many years?

It's not as if we don't know what he's done since he's been out of college, we know what he's accomplished (whether you agree with it or not) and what he stands for.

It's not as if this is his first job and his grades are relevant.

It's just like AYoung says, you gonna vote for him, or against him, because he got a "B" in French 102?

Teabaggers act like Obama is being secretive by not releasing college records that no presidential candidate ever has but also no one from from Romneys camp has asked to be released. There's a reason neither Romney or his PACs have ever questioned Obamas school records because doing so would simply give Obama the opportunity to say i'll release them if Romney releases his past 8 years returns. Romney will never push for this. You may see post after post on here validating Romneys not releasing his returns because Obama isn't releasing school records but you'll never hear that from Romney.

"Put up or shut up"? Maybe what he really meant was I hope they shut up about this, but if they don't I guess I'll just have to put up with it. Mr. Romney will be pounded over the head with this issue every day until he releases the tax forms. If he chooses not to release his taxes by the time we get to November not one single voter will be thinking of anything about him other than why he chose not to release them. So, as an independent leaning toward the incumbent I pray he doesn't release, which will result in the biggest landslide in the history of presidential elections. So long Mitt!

I do not want another 4 years from Obama. Fool me once shame on you Fool me twice shame on me. I wont be fooled again.

I am living a great life, have a great family and a great job that I have worked hard to maintain and succeed at I don't mind paying my fairshare of taxes - I have served my country in the first Gulf War and come from a long line of Military Veterans (yes some are even Republicans) So to say that I am "Brainwashed" just goes a little to far - well educated, self educated.

So you supported the call for change because you saw it was what was needed, and now that we've come 3.5 years down the line and there has been a dedicated opposition to anything that might help give this president a second term to fullfill that agenda since day 1, you're saying it was the wrong thing to do? horsesnot. The agenda the President laid out in 2008 was the right course for this country then, and it is the right course now. have we gotten everything we needed accomplished? no, but that doesn't mean you give up and go back to the broken policies of the other party that got us into the mess in the first place. It means you work to remove the cause of the obstruction and continue to try and bring this country into the 21st century.

you're either a fool for giving up before the job is done, or a liar who didn't suppport the President in 2008 in the first place. Based on the birther nonesense, i'm guessing the latter.

Yes when Bush left we had 7.8% unemployment with 20 million out of work, now we have 8.3% and 25 milliion out of work. Real progress, too bad in the wrong direction. You have to remember the number of unemployment claims go down becasue you have less workers working. (kind of like if you have 100 workers and 10% get laid off, you have 90 left, if 10% are later laid off you have 81 workers left. (less workers were laid off (good news) but the same percentage (good news for obama) but less workers are working. Eventually you will have more non workers then workers. The problem is the number of total workers is not increasing. It is stagnet, while new workers comming into the work force is not finding work is increasing. Note your 760K was for 2 months, I noticed you did not mention Obama's first months when the stimulas was spent.

According to FactCheck.org, "the national debt rose 190% under former President Reagan. It rose 52% under President Goerge H.W. Bush, 37% under Bill Clinton, and 86% under Bush II. During his first 3 years in office, President Obama has presided over a 45% increase in the national debt." David Lazarus stated, "As these numbers make clear, Republicans are just as fond of government spending as Democrats."

Now, how about you stop being gutless and repost it under your full first, middle, and last names. And while your at it include your city of residence. You won't because you are gutless and know that you have opened yourself up to a charge of libel. You and the rest of your slandering ilk already know that the IRS has seen and reviewed his tax records. You know those IRS guys who get their rocks off putting people in prison for cheating on their taxes. If they had found anything wrong, anything at all, we would all know about it. So grow a pair and let the people at the Romney campaign know where to file and whom to file against. But, being the gutless coward you are you will just leave your postings as anonymous. Oh by the way did you happen to see the story a few weeks ago where a Federal Judge approved a Seattle news paper be forced to reveal the true identities of those parties who had slandered politicians? Might want to start working on that retraction.

You really need to stick to facts and not distort them into a lie. Again use facts not agenda Didi and you might actually learn how to articulate a reasonable argument..

She gave you the facts, Troll. numbers as a percentage of national debt increase, and Obama is lower than the last 3 republican Presidents. You are the one using an agenda to promote statements that are untrue, Troll.

Here are some more facts: increase in government spending as a percentage of GDP

                                                              43's 1st term - 4%

                                                              43's second term - 7.7%

                                                              44's 1st term - 1.7%

So it appears that your statement about a president spending more than all the other presidents in history fits 43 much more than it does 44. Your claim that "Obama has spent more than all other presidents in the History of America added together" is the lie right wingers have been pushing, and you've bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Lewis ~ Don't think anyone is necessarily assuming that Mitt's tax returns are illegal. We're just interested in jut how out of touch he is with the 99%, and if he was, in fact, involved with Bain, when he said he wasn't, and how much of his money is in off shore accounts, and how little he paid percentage-wise in taxes. I think those are important issues - not that any of them are illegal. They just help to put together a picture of the man who wants to lead this country.

Well Judy, I think that you can safely assume that Mitt made a heckuva lotta money during those years, alot more than the 99% can even dream of.

I think you can safely assume that he paid capital gains taxes of a lot more money than most Americans made during during the same period, that being at a rate less than what the working class paid (probably Romney at about 15% compared to a two wage earner middle class marginal rate of 20%).

I think you can safely assume that he tithed more to the Latter Day Saints then 99% of Americans earned during any of those years.

I think without seeing his tax returns you can probably put together a picture of a man that is filthy rich, has money offshore in tax haven countries, wants to roll back "Obamacare", cut taxes on millionaires, and pay for it by cutting entitlements and downsizing the payroll of the Federal government.

You probably already know whether you support his policies, or not.

So really, what more can more of the same tax returns tell you?

Lewis - you look very foolish as the IRS has NOT seen Romney's 2011 taxes - he filed an extension. Have they perused his 2010? Maybe - maybe not. Not every tax return - even of the wealthy - is audited every year.

The point is - Romney is the ONLY Presidential candidate in modern time who has not released at least 5 years of tax returns - he's not even released one full year. His father released 12 years. He looks dirty because he chooses to look dirty.

                                                                Obama/Biden 2012

31% of Romneys income on the return he released was taxed at 15% as carried interest. Carried interest is the 20% that hedge fund and venture capital ventures charge on all profits on others money and most tax experts state should be taxed at normal rates but isn't. Congress and Obama has tried to eliminate this loophole 3 times and republicans shot it down. Carried interest involves no risk as it's simply a cut of profit on others money, it's simply a giveaway bought and paid for by people like Romney.

Maybe if people like Romney would pay their share the debt wouldn't be as high. The right acts like the dollar amounts paid as income taxes is the only thing that matters even though that's only 42% of revenue. The 58% that remains is mostly paid by the 99% by way of payroll and other taxes.

Didi I can see why you like to use percentages, but they are very misleading. If you use your method, then President #1 spends 1 trillion in Debt. President #2 spends 2 trillion in debt, and President #3 Spends 4 trillon in Debt and President #4 Spends 8 Trillion in Dept according to your percentages they all spent 200%, but one spent more then 8 times the first two did. Not to mention you figures on Obama are only 3 year vs 8 years of spending on the others. Clnton had a Republican Congress half of his term to control spending. Bush had a Democrat controled congress that ran up spending, Obama had a supermajorty Congress his first 2 years, and a Republican House and Democrat Senate for the past 1.5 years. Bush 2 had a 5 trillion dollar increase in his 8 years, Obama 6 trillion in less then 4 years. If he gets reelected I sure it will go over 13 trillion just for his 8 years.

                                                                  #21.16 - Sat Aug 4, 2012 4:32 PM EDT

Since Bush left an economy in turmoil, with 11 trillion in net worth destroyed, over 5 million more without jobs on unemployment, food stamps, medicaid and welfare and 400 billion less in revenue to the treasury it's hard not to expect carry over from Bush to Obama. Especially considering the budget for the worst year, 2009 was under the previous administrations budget. Other than the 780 billion special stimulus Obama proposed. Even that according to OMB saved or created 1.7 million to 3.5 million jobs. Hard to blame it all on Obama when under Bush we lost 5% of our workforce, and 20% of our wealth and revenue. Obama had neither the income to spend or the percentage of the people working that Bush had when he was elected.

                                                                  • 1 vote

And except for the last two years Democrats have been in control of the purse strings. The OMB gives the stats for the infomation they recieve, you give them wrong info they will give you wrong results, as the addage goes "garbage in, garbage out". Wouln't it have been better if they just gave out teh 6 trillion out to every taxpayer? The problem is we are still spending more then 1.3 trillion then they take in. If the 1% are taxed at 100% that would only pay for 8 days of federal spending. Who will pay for the other 357 days.

                                                                    #21.18 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 6:54 PM EDT

Banks made loans easier and easier to get for greed. Loaning a half million dollars to a McDonalds worker because he claimed 120K income with no down and no mortgage insurance was stupid. Bank CEO's making 10's of millions should have been smart enough to know this was insane. Congress pressured banks to make loans to more poor and lower middle class but nothing they passed forced banks to do what they did other than greed. A few idiot companies like Countrywide started it and the sheep followed.

300 Micheal: Making a claim that raising taxes on the 1% to 100% wouldn't make a difference is ludicrous. First off no one is suggesting raising it to 100%. Since most of the 1% pay far less than the top rate of 35% due to special exemptions like carried interest and capital gains both at 15%. You complain about others using numbers to distort the truth then use numbers to distort the truth.

Only 42% of federal revenue is from income taxes the rest comes mostly from the poor and middle class from payroll taxes and others. The amount we are overspending is only relevant if either party has a plan to lower it. Obama offered to match the modest increase in taxes on the wealthy which would raise 2 trillion and match it with 2 trillion in cuts from social spending. I defy anyone examining Romneys plan to find anything he plans to cut that exceeds what he plans on increasing. Obama's plan would have decreased the deficit 4 trillion with only modest tax increases on the wealthy, republicans refused to support it. Romney proposes cuts for himself and his ilk and substantial tax increases on the middle class.

                                                                      #21.20 - Sun Aug 5, 2012 9:01 PM EDT

So have a flat rate for everone. that way a person making 100K pays 10 times the amount that a person making 10 K a year. I believe that a person who invests in their own or anthers business shouldn't have to pay as much on money at risk. Second look at states that raised their taxes. The millionairs moved out of the state, to states like FL. Now they have less income then before. The Rich can move. the poorer taxpayers can not so easily do so.

I like your second paragraph, 42% from income taxes, and the payroll taxes from middle and poor. Wrong, the 42% is just from the 1% of the top payroll taxes (income) the Poor pay 0% and actually get back money. The middle class pay about 12% since the top 5% pay more then 50%. 25% is made with fees, and other charges.

Obama's offer to cut the spending and raise taxes are about as good as a 3 dollar bill. The Democrats have made such deals in the past under Regan, Bush, that promised to cut spending once taxes were raised, but after raising the taxes the cuts never happened. Republicans would be fools to believe that Obama would keep that promise, since his record of promises is extreamly poor. (you know cutting the Debt in half, 3 days to read bills before voting on them, (sure didn't work with Obamacare), closeing Gitmo, getting rid of waistfull government regulations, and spending) to name a few. Ryan wanted to freez current levels and the democrats call it drastic cut backs. Hell will freez over before democrats can make any real cuts to the budget (except to cutting the military,,which is what the feds are susposed to be spending money on).

Notice he increases spending by more then 2 trillion in a year, but want 10 yers to cut that same amount. That is not an equal cut. the Obama plan is worthless because every session of congress is not held to previous laws or (tax) programs made by others. So they can raise the taxes, and not cut anything. So unless they do it now, nothing will change except for higher taxes. Even if it did pass and future congresses went with it the Debt would still be larger becuse it would put the debt at 17 trillion, because of other cost of living increases built into the system. That doesn't even count SS and MC.

                                                                        #21.21 - Thu Aug 9, 2012 11:25 AM EDT

I think he's going to follow another McCain precedent - lose the election. And, please stop acting all Rambo about Iran when you dodged the draft, your father did, and your sons won't serve. How is it possible to rationalize sending everyone else's kid to do what you and your family would not.

Sorry I didn't say I paid my Federal income taxes, and State income taxes. except for the Democrat Czars under Obama (and Bonney Frank) All Republicans are required to pay their legal requried taxes. Otherwise they are in prison.

As a Army person you must know that the Draft ended deecades ago. We have a All Volinteer Services. Unlike some of your heroes (Clinton comes to mind) that left the country so as not to be drafted, not enlisting has no meaning. Sorry your glue doesn't stick.

So it is ok for a Democrat but not for a Republican? again double standard. His sons didn't have to consider the draft. A person doesn't have to been in the serrvice to be president. Just like liberials can want legal abortians without themselves have to have one before they can want it. Just as people that don't pay property taxes can vote for people with property taxes to raise them to pay for new programs.

BUSH pushed Solyndra loan guarantee for 2 years!!!

The Energy Policy Act of 2005, signed into law by Bush, under section 1703 of Title XVII, included loan guarantee funding to promote innovative clean energy technologies. Solyndra had applied for a loan under 1703, but no loans were made by the time Bush left office.

In 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus, added a new section — 1705 — which offered a more attractive loan package because it did not include credit subsidy fees. Solyndra ended up receiving a $535 million loan under section 1705 — not the original section 1703 program crafted during the Bush administration.

According to a White House e-mail dated Oct. 14, 2009, obtained by congressional investigators, officials viewed Solyndra as a key element in “supporting the president’s manufacturing strategy.” The e-mail added: “The Administration’s combination of loans, grants, tax credits and mandates will help the United States regain its position as the world leader in manufacturing clean energy equipment.”

As Obama’s 2010 quote above demonstrates, the president chose to emphasize the administration’s role in crafting the loan effort when he spoke about Solyndra, only to shift course once Solyndra failed.

The administration is straining too hard to reverse that aphorism — ie, saying the failure of Solyndra has a thousand fathers. While the original law may have set up the loan guarantee program, Solyndra received its loan through an expansion of that program that the administration was quick to take credit for. (The Biden news release mitigates this a bit, but the reference to the 2005 law was not attributed to Biden.)

We find it hard to believe that any reasonable person could interpret Obama’s remarks this week as anything but a distinct effort to put the blame for Solyndra in some one else’s pocket. The president should accept responsibility, not shirk it.

                                                                                      Two Pinocchios

Here's a question for conservatives, why do you want to change the subject to Solyndra or Fast & Furious? The topic is Mitt Romney's taxes and his refusal to provide what every presidential candidate has provided since his own father, George, determined that the American people needed to know the financial background of a possible president.

There are a number of excellent reports on Solyndra and Fast & Furious but the trouble is, conservatives do not want the facts, they only want the topic.

SavannahRae, keep up the good fight; and I'll add the following:

Solyndra loan guarantee was part of the 2005 Energy Policy Act signed by President Bush. In his 2007 SOTU address, Bush talked about the loan guarantee program. In 2007, the DOE issued final rules for the program with a list of 16 companies that made the cut to apply for the first round of award, Solyndra was one of the 16. Approving the loan guarantee to Solyndra was listed as 1 of 3 that President Bush wanted done by Jan 15, 2009, but the credit committee held it up for more analysis. Solyndra applied for the loan under the 2005 Energy Policy Act, Section 1703.

The Obama administration ARRA (stimulus) added additional funds to the loan guarantee program but not to Solyndra specifically so Romney's attack ad linking Solyndra directly to the stimulus is a lie. The DOE said clearly that Section 1703 & 1705 fall under the Loan Guarantee Program Bush pushed and signed into law. The Solyndra loan process began long before President Obama was even selected as the democratic nominee.

There's plenty of Solyndra facts out there but only people who would like the truth rather than the talking points seem to bother reading them. Same with Fast and Furious.

                                                                                      • 8 votes

The loan was shelved under Bush, and over internal protests from their own people, rushed thru by Obama. As detailed in the posts above.

Congratulations, though on being less of a liar than all the other leftwingers on this thread...although you try to misdirect and get back to the fact that it was under consideration (but then shelved) during the Bush admin, you at least claim in here that "it was held up" in his presidency...that's progress for a lefty.

Where do you see "rushed through by Obama" It was a multi-year bipartisan screw-up that was instigated by Bush and signed into law by Bush and unfortunately finished by Obama. If he hadn't done it, you would have accused him of sabotaging Bush's programs. But that's the right. Distorting the truth is their least evil pastime.

Most people I know aren't overly concerned with it. Stuff happens. If Romneys elected he'd increase military spending equal to 520 Solyndras. I think most people would rather we try to wean our self off fossil fuels rather than build to fight endless wars to protect our sources.

I don't mind the military spending as it is something that the Federal Govenment is mandated to do in the Constitution. It is all the other spending that they have no right to be doing.

Why is it so important for Romneys tax returns going back 10 years and all the Tax evading Czars Obama appointed didn't make any news? They only paid when they got the job. If Romney did't pay his legal taxes he would be in prison. His Taxes show he paid. The IRS says he paid. It is about time we get this 70 trillion debt in order (Includes unfunded mandates like Social Security and Medicade.).

The next time he filed one it did show this off shore account indicating Romney revised his statement. Did Romney reveal an illegal off shore account under amnesty to avoid prosecution by the IRS as 10's of thousands of other wealthy Americans did? If so he still committed a felony and simply avoided jail time by coming clean under the amnesty program. If so we have the right to know before electing him as president.

I have bough properties that when made the offer late in the year were not closed before my taxes were filed. I had to go back once they cleared and refile. At least he filed correctly, others (Obama Czars, Bonney Frank filed (or didn't even file taxes)) at all or falsely. Yet Democrats give them a fee ride. It is this double standard that gets me mad. Republican criminals in government get thown out, Democrat criminals get to be the top dogs in the party.
