Obama: Still talking taxes

“Later this morning, Obama takes up taxes, urging Congress to extend the George W. Bush tax cuts for middle class Americans, while ending them for wealthy filers; Republicans want to extend all the Bush-era tax cuts, including the high-end ones,” USA Today writes. “During his remarks today, Obama ‘will be joined by middle class families and workers who would be affected if Republicans in Congress continue to hold their tax cuts hostage by insisting on massive tax cuts for the very wealthiest individuals,’ says the White House schedule.”

The Obama campaign says it has released an online map “that allows individuals to see how many middle-class families in each state would see their taxes increase under the Romney Tax Hike and how much a typical middle-class family saved in taxes during President Obama’s first term.”

“Former president Bill Clinton will headline a New York City event for Priorities USA Action, the ‘super PAC’ founded by former aides to President Obama, in August, a person with knowledge of the plans said on Thursday,” The New York Times writes.

“With just weeks to spare, the leaders of the Democratic convention are chasing last-minute contributions to fund the political gala aimed at boosting President Obama's re-election bid,” USA Today writes. “Their efforts are hampered, in part, by Obama's decision to limit direct corporate contributions and a partial union boycott of this summer's event in Charlotte. Organizers of the Republican National Convention, meanwhile, say they also are collecting money but are well on their way toward hitting their goal of raising roughly $55 million as companies, such as Hewlett-Packard and Coca-Cola help underwrite the Aug. 27-30 Republican National Convention in Tampa where Mitt Romney will accept his party's nomination.

In a sharp departure from previous conventions, Democrats have banned checks from corporations or political action committees for the convention and have imposed a $100,000 cap on donations from individuals.”

And RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is going to hit the president on Solyndra at today’s Red State conference in Jacksonville, FL. Per excerpts of his remarks, Priebus will say: “You can sum up what Obama really thinks of the middle class in one word: Solyndra. Remember this: Instead of protecting hard working Americans’ tax dollars, he paid off his political cronies.” More Priebus: “Emails released this week show the White House knew it would cost more to bail out Solyndra than to let them fail.  But they still chose Solyndra over the middle class. Solyndra got special treatment, and we got the bill. The Obama administration was so generous that the head of Solyndra called them the ‘Bank of Washington’ in one email. Solyndra got an unlimited line of credit from the Bank of Barack.”

So the middle class gets the tax break with the extension OR with the Obama plan? So He is holding them hostage if we let other people keep money that is not his now right? I mean even if you buy the class warfare pitch, the middle class is not effected by a higher tax bracket keeping the percentage of their income they have now.

I guess you can say republicans are holding the middle class hostage if you want. But it seems to mean either Obama holds them hostage unless you give HIM money or the other group hold them up to let other tax payers keep some of their own income. If I have to choose, Obama looks down right evil on this one.

He is standing behind a human shield and saying one of you is gonna pay me or the other is gonna get it. The other group is just asking him to leave us all alone. But it will be the other guys fault if he kills us. Does he want a tax break for the middle class or just more money for wasted projects again.

I have not seen once where this administration has spent the money taken from my paycheck, better than I could have used it myself. I am not in favor of giving him more of anybodies.

I think you need a new moniker - "Sane" just doesn't jive with your opinions.

I have not seen once where this administration has spent the money taken from my paycheck, better than I could have used it myself.

Which roads did you construct to drive your car on? Did you pick up a rifle to fight terrorism? I KNOW you didn't go to elite, private schools!

Funny, President Obama is talking taxes while Romney is still hiding from his own tax returns... The more he hides from disclosing his taxes the more he looks like a crook...

The middle class and small business, under President Obama, have received major tax breaks... But the republicans never talk about that...

The President should hold firm and not allow this do nothing congress to continue the Bush Tax Cuts come January...

I fail to see how this administration, and it's supporters, can use "government builds roads" to justify all the waste and abuse that has come out of this administration when it comes to tax dollars spent. Only a small portion of federal tax dollars pay for roads, none of us have a problem with that. What we do have a problem with is Obama giving our tax dollars to his bundlers (there are sooo many examples of this). We have a problem with him failing to enforce illegal immigration laws because he wants the hispanic vote. We have a problem with him trying to create an America that redistributes the earnings of those who work hard to the people who want to live off the system. It's perfectly clear that the situation our country is in is unsustainable. We can't afford to borrow against our grandchildren's future to pay for housing, food, medical care and cash assistance to the poor. The poor need to go out and make something of themselves if they want things. I grew up poor, and worked my way out of it. Of course, my parents taught me the value of hard work, they didn't hand down to me a culture of welfare and government dependence. Anybody who supports this administration clearly can't look ahead to future and see where we're going.

waste and abuse are just right wing talkign points with no validity. This administration is no less wasteful or abusive than any administration before them, and in reality has been much better on these fronts than many. The reality doesn't mesh with the right wing's vow to make this administration fail, so it is nothing but smear politics using propaganda. According to the Rovian playbook, "you can fool some of the people all of the time, and can fool all of the people some of the time, if you just repeat your lies enough."

soo many examples of corruption in this administration that you can't name one, right? thats what i thought...

hmmm, illegal immigrants aren't yet citizens and so therefore can't vote until they become citizens, which no path to citizenship has been created yet. so debunked another of your BS talking points. shall i continue?

We can't borrow against our grandchildren's future for welfare of fellow citizens, but it is sure ok to do so for war and oil profiteering? so that banks can get bailed out while corporations post record profit after record profit due to tax subsidies and loopholes? and you want to blame the poor for being lazy and greedy but ignore all these others?

you, and all those who think like you do, are part of the problem in this country, not part of the solution.

the real problem for sane, he knows very little about the role of government, but knows too much about what fear news blows out their butt.

government is not a business and never will be, its main responsibility is to provide balance, balance in trade, balance in safety, balance in protection, balance in interstate commerce, balance in care and balance in education, and balance in the economy, to name a few examples.

government starts at the very local level and spirals up creating departments to help the growth and well being of its citizens. it begins with a village then a city, a township a county, a state, a federal govt and all along the way it develops depts which keep a balance and this takes revenue and revenue sharing and investments etc and on top of it all, we the people, decide who will represent us.

is govt too big, no, because govt can never be too big, it must grow as the population grows. we are all paying a historical low tax rate, but it does not provide the services needed to provide protectio to all, so revenues must go up.

mr romney and the republicans state, gov is too big which is an out an out lie. the epa is for our protection they want to cut it. public education is for the good of the nations children and they want to remove it. good health care is the right of every person in the world and they want to repeal it. in fact, the republican representatives have not upheld their oath to uphold and protect, we the people, so it is time that they all go.

I'm cool with the name calling. Does not change that Obama is holding the middle class hostage. And Ursula I have not seen one new road built in my area in this administration, but I did pay taxes. Yes, I went to public school, and yes I have served in the military. And yes I still think Obama has wasted billions, that is not changed by the you didn't build that ploy, or the class war tactics Obama is using. If we don't give HIM more money. I am not even close to being in the 1% he wants me to hate, but I will not fall for blaming them if Obama withold my tax break. The very idea that a POTUS resorts to using a hate and division tactic for tax justification is sad. Do you realize that the whole argument is a presidential cal for us to pick a segment of our people to hate and try to punish.

Taxes, taxes, taxes! Why is it that I pay nearly double what the fat cats pay and why is it that the average uninformed dunce thinks protecting the wealthiest amongst us from paying their fair share is in their best interest? How lame!! The job creators have of course created millions and millions of jobs so the term "Job Creators" is applicable as long as you live in a foreign country. These "job creators" closed down over 50,000 US factories and sent our jobs off shore. They need more tax cuts about as much as frogs and salamanders need machine guns and fast cars !! If it were up to me the "job creators" would be paying 90% taxes just like in the good old days of President Eisenhower. This tax argument is just pathetic and making it more so are the folks who think that the wealthy are going to create anything positive for us but more misery for the vast majority of Americans is soon to be on its way. Wake up and smell the money - it is in foreign hands off shore creating nothing but more wealth for the wealthy!

Mitt Romney is a fine, upstanding citizen, as his "doctored" tax returns would tell us he is. I'm sure he paid billions of dollars during the time he paid no taxes. He has had as much time to forge this proof as the president had for his birth certificate. If he says he can fix the economy, he must be able to. He and the rest of the 1/2% he runs with will personally cough up the 86 billion / year his tax cuts will cost. We just need to trust him and put him in the white house before he give us any more details. My money is on a huge auction of everything in Washington, NASA, The public school system, and hospital/clinics. Then he'll write himself a check for the 20% brokers fee.

When you say balance, what you mean is the redistribution of wealth. And no it is not the role of anyone but dictators and kings. I realize that Obama views himself as such and some here want that system. But this government simple provides freedom for men to pursue it from their labors and creativity. It has never been a feature of this government to simply take from one who earned it to give to those who don't in the name of balance. I know libs think it should be we all need to be provided for and everything should be free, but that just is not the real world.

These temporary tax breaks are simply poor economic policies. Scott Hodge, the president of the Tax Foundation, contends that “once these [tax breaks] get built in, cooked in to the system, they're awfully difficult to get rid of.”

Moreover, temporary tax breaks are inherently short term in nature. They get extended indefinitely to hide their ultimate cost to the American taxpayer.

For example, the payroll tax cost--which costs the federal government about $120 billion each year--is added to the federal deficit when corresponding spending cuts are not included.

We need full scale tax reform, not this.
