10 GOP governors rally around Romney

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney greets Texas Gov. Rick Perry, left, and Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, right, on Thursday as he campaigns at Basalt Public High School, in Basalt, Colo.

BASALT, Colo. – Fresh from a foreign trip marked by a number of stumbles, Mitt Romney was back in his element late Thursday.

It was a Republican governors’ love fest outside the resort town of Aspen as the presumptive GOP nominee was joined on stage by 10 prominent Republican governors.

“I want to learn from these ladies and men if I become president of the United States on each policy, each major piece of legislation on how it affects them and their people instead of just dropping it in their lap,” Romney told several hundred people inside Basalt Public High School’s auditorium.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer all accompanied Romney on his first day back campaigning in America since his trip overseas.

Each took turns praising the man they hope will defeat President Barack Obama in just a few short months.

“We need a president that believes in the free enterprise system. And we need a president that can deliver the goods,” Brewer said. “I will tell you, Gov. Romney, you can do it, and I am behind you.  America is behind you.”

Perry, who ended his own run for president in January, had one simple message: This election is about trust.

“The difference between the current president of the United States and the next president of the United States is that this man trusts you. Barack Obama does not trust you,” Perry said. “He does not trust you to make decisions about your health care.  He does not trust you to make decisions about your children's education.  He does not trust you in Colorado to make decisions about your energy policy.”

The event spurred plenty of vice presidential buzz too.  Among the ten governors here in Basalt, Jindal, McDonnell, Christie and Martinez have each stirred speculation.

“It's a treat to be here from the Commonwealth of Virginia that's going from Obama blue to Romney red in 90 days,” McDonnell, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, said.

The RGA has been holding closed meetings in Aspen for two days.

Jindal took several minutes to boost Romney’s education platform, which he said would include a school voucher system of the kind he is instituting statewide in Louisiana this fall.

“Our sons and daughters deserve nothing less than the best education we can give them -- the best education that any child will receive in the entire world. We'll get that Number 1 ranking back by electing Gov. Romney as the president of these great United States,” he said.

But just who should be Romney’s VP?

The consensus by the governors in attendance: whomever Romney wants.

“There are a lot of really capable ones, but I will leave that up to Mitt, he will have it all figured out,” Perry told reporters about the handful of governors rumored to populate Romney’s shortlist.

“His decision,” Martinez said. “There is only one vote and that is his [Romney’s].”

Just to show Americans just how entitled Mr. Romney feels, he sends his wife out to say: You people will not get our tax returns.

I ask you, America, who does that and gets away with it? ANSWER: Nobody!

and this dog guy calls himself a Christian. I am pretty sure Jesus would not condone calling somebody a fa**ot. This guy is exactly why I don't go to Church anymore....too much of the so called Christians are really what I call Hypochristians.

    • Against abortion (I fully understand their moral position) yet they are always for war. Doesn't equate.
    • Quick to talk about family values, but call people Fa**ots...not a value I teach my family.
    • Again the talk of Family values but so many would sell their mother if they could get enough money for her.
    • Family values...yet will never vote for a minimum wage increase, yet cut taxes for the uber wealthy.

In the end all I will say is WWJD?

The most important thing here is that Romney is willing to LISTEN to Governors who actually run states like he did. Obama has never run anything, except his mouth, and he sure as hell can' t run a country.

Vote out Barack O-bull$hit in November and lets get this country moving again !!!

Each of these Gov are taking a vacation at the taxpayer's expense, proving once again that are fiscally irresponsible. Plus, the RED states that passed voter photo id laws will now have to send election officials to EVERY American living abroad to check their photo id's. If they don't, mail-in ballots CANNOT be counted. America cannot allow any form of FRAUD to take place.

Are we that far away from whats really going on in these political back room deals. I'm not even clost to brilliant yet I can clearly see what needs to be done. Why is it that even though these crooks rip us off on a daily basis they will still get voted in?

How can you not vote for Ron Paul after listening to him for 2 minutes. He would clearly be the peoples choice if given half a chance . It's a sad state of affairs when he who has the most TV time wins the Presidential election. This will play out the same way that Ross Perot bid did

Here is why I cannot vote for RP.

        1. The Tea Party members have said they were going to get rid of all oldsters and career politicians. RP is clearly near the top of the list for both categories.

        2. RP has benefited by pay raise votes, pensions and the best health insurance coverage in the world, and is indocrinating his son Rand into the game of ripping off taxpayers. Rand can make more money and have more vacation time by leaving his medical field to rip us off.

If Romney paid zero dollars in taxes for almost ten years, while claiming he pays 14.55 per cent, doesn't that make him a liar, as well as tax dodger? While secretaries pay 34 %, Romney writes off his wife's favorite horsie as an investment, not a hobby! What else has he hidden from the taxman? It must be something if his father was willing to show us 12 years of his tax returns, yet Mitt won't be as open as his father. What is he hiding? How much he made off the Utah Winter Olympics, while the uniforms may have been made in his Romney Enterprise zones in third world countries?

Romney refuses to tell us anything about his time in Massachusetts, where the state went to 47th out of 50 in lack of job growth. Is he embarrassed of his RomneyCare, too?

Romney refuses to show us his foreign policy plans, except what he has accidentally promised to Israel to support them no matter what they do. And his endorsement of a war with Iran is irresponsible until he really knows all the facts!

Romney won't prove when he left Bain. He wants us to trust him.

While claiming residence in Massachusetts for seven years so he could run for Governor, his taxes showed him claiming his primary residence was in Utah, for the tax benefits there. Isn't this tax evasion? Or was he lying to the State of Massachusetts? It has to be one or the other. You pick! He also claimed his primary residence in Massachusetts, too!

If Romney wants America to trust him, certainly this man, who refused to believe Obama's actual birth certificate, owes us something by which we can judge his honesty!

Romney has not allowed the press to have access to him!

The press core he had with him in his "World Tour" were there for his photo-ops, and were allowed three questions total for the entire week, while they were sequestered on his stinky bus, like prisoners.

His support for voucher systems and attacks on puplic schools in addition to his investments in Charter Schools should be enough proof that his intent is profits, not education. Voucher programs may not cover the cost of schools. How much more would our children have to pay for an education under his plans?

Don't we deserve to know a little more before we endorse him, while he off-shores his money in nine countries, shifts funds into his wife's account the day before he became Governor of Massachusetts and set up a shadow corporation in Bermuda?

Romney stinks. He won't clear these questions up. He seems to want to wait till the very last second to select a VP, and hopes we will not have time to vet him/her either. We are not able to vet Romney. He refuses to answer our questions!

            Trust me, says Romney!

You see Jack it is the same as when they lie to us ..When they lie to us it's Politics" If we lie to them it is a Federal Offence" Now check this out I asked my local congresswoman why they haven't impeached Obama due to his birth cert being proven " with out a doubt " it was never even a real piece of paper, it was all made up on a computer . Proven to be layered on top of layer , never being an actual document EVER>>

Now I was told congress is way to busy dealing with "Real problems" as she put it to be bothered with this ridicules statements . I said busy doing what? Milking a base ball player for all he is worth "Roger Clemens " over whether or not he took a human growth hormone or not ..

I see how that is a real congresional issue of great importance .A great potential threat to national security .My wife asked me what do they care about whether Clemens lied or not . I said they do not . My dear all they care about is the 220 Million he is going to pay them to get out of that lie then all we will hear is "It has been settled behind closed doors" .. a few months later that's exactly what happened. Back room dealings....Same way the do their pay raises and retirement thefts opps I mean plans

I think it is time for Americans to say-"No taxation, without representation. Congress is not representing the American public, so we should not pay taxes. Let the Republicans do what they want, with no money from the public, except for Tea Party who is being represented. Democrats and Republicans should refuse to pay taxes, then the Tea Party can have what they want...just no money to do anything. I think they will learn they represent ALL THE PEOPLE, not themselves.

Perry, who ended his own run for president in January, had one simple message: This election is about trust.

OK Perry, maybe you can convince Romney to release his tax returns, because until then, no one is going to trust him, because with all the effort on his part to keep them secret, it's only obvious he's hiding something. Even you Perry, are aware of this, otherwise you wouldn't have brought it up in the primaries. The republican party is over ...LOL!!

We have to pray for God to help us. If "this eleccion is about trust", again, God help us!. Mr. Romney "economic experience" is A BIG JOKE!. No only he should show us his past 10 years taxes but as wel tell us "a little bit" about his experience in Massachusetts, for example: tell us why his "popularity" got down to 30% during his last 2 years as Gov. of that state and so...and so... and so...!.

The Top 10 Poorest States in the U.S. are Republican States. Do you ever hear the Republicans talk about the Poor or Poverty in those States? The answer is “Never”. It just so happens most of those States are in the South and have “Right To Work Laws”. How’s that working out for ya?
