ASPEN, CO -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has some advice for Mitt Romney: choose a running mate who is anti-abortion.
“If you're voting for somebody at the top of the ticket who's pro-life, and vice presidents often – not always, but often – wind up succeeding to leadership of the party, if not leadership of the country," Christie said, "You know, people want some consistency in that regard."
Romney, whose views on abortion have become more conservative since he first expressed them during his 1994 Senate run, is opposed to abortion -- except, he has said, in cases of rape and incest and when the life of the mother is in danger.
Christie delivered his remarks during a Q & A with several Republican governors Wednesday evening. The event, held beneath a large tent and hosted by the Aspen Institute, followed meetings earlier Wednesday of the Republican Governors Association here in this upscale resort city.
“Do I think it’s possible? I think it’s possible,” Christie said of the possibility of Romney picking a running mate who supports abortion rights. “Do I think it’s likely? No. And do I think it’s advisable? No. I wouldn’t do it.”
That standard would not seem to eliminate many top-tier names from the list of Romney’s potential running mates – aside from former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who has described her views as “mildly pro-choice.”
Christie did not name Rice, though he praised Republicans for what he said are more permissive attitudes toward divergent views inside the party.
“The Democratic Party won’t even let someone who’s pro-life speak at their convention,” Christie said, referring to former Pennsylvania Gov. Bob Casey, who said in 1992 he was denied a speaking slot because of his views on abortion rights.
He also said Romney hadn't called on him for advice on the closely-watched decision.
“You know, again, this is going to be Governor Romney's choice,” he continued, adding, "he can choose whoever he wants. If he asks for my advice, I'd give him my advice on it. He hasn't asked for my advice on who he's going to pick for vice president yet.”
Wednesday’s panel included four other high-profile governors: Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Bob McDonnell of Virginia, Nikki Haley of South Carolina, and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.

Willard Mitt Romney lied about his taxes to be eligible to run as governor in Massachusetts, telling voters he filed his taxes in Massachusetts and not Utah during the 1999-2000 time he was helping with the winter Olympics. Then when he got busted for filing in Utah and not Massachusetts, he lied again to voters saying his accountants messed up without his knowledge. But he knew very well, because all that time he was busy trying to refile those taxes in Massachusetts while he was LYING -- under oath -- about where he filed his taxes.
And what did he say to reporters during that investigation? He told them he would be happy to check into the matter, and adamantly promised he would get back with them on that. Then he refused to get back with anyone "on that" saying his financial affairs were private. And he said people should just trust that he refiled his taxes in Massachusetts, which no one ever proved.
Sound familiar? Romney was just asked a clear and direct question whether he had ever paid less than the 13.9% tax rate indicated in the one partial year of returns for 2010 that he has released. Romney LIED and said he didn't know. The hell he doesn't know. And he said he'd be happy to check and get back with the reporter on that. And guess what? Romney is NOT answering that question from any news media outlet.
How much do voters need to know about Romney to KNOW he is a LIAR and CHEATER and therefore lacking the character (let alone qualifications) to be POTUS, Commander in Chief, and leader of the free world? I don't understand, since the Massachusetts constitution is clear about anyone running for governor having to have continuous MA residency for the prior 7 years, how did Mitt Romney, who clearly filed his taxes during that time as a Utah resident, manage to be allowed to run for governor of MA? He "retroactively" changed his tax filing? Just like he "retroactively" became not the CEO of Bain after 1999? The whole thing sounds very sleazy to me. How can people think that's okay?

Red Sox, I believe the law states that abortions are legal up to the time they can survive outside the womb. I'm not sure when that is, but that point is generally considered by doctors as 24 weeks. Can you accept that as an answer to your question? (It will be interesting to see.)

A fetus born at five months can live outside of the host but only with all the medical knowledge available. People like you talk about pain the fetus "might" feel, but let me tell you the pain the baby feels when cut, tubes placed inside of it and cut and cut again to keep it alive is real life pain, horrible pain. And, the child may never be fully developed ever.
And, why do you all that that God is against abortions. A female child is born with hundred thousand eggs and the sperm goes on forever. If God was so concerned there would be only say twenty eggs because that is the child bearing years for women. And as far as personhood is concerned...check out Genesis 2-7, God will tell you when a fetus becomes a living soul. Certainly it is not when sperm says hi to the egg. It takes a whole lot more than that.

My opinion? Never, if they're going to be born into a household that is unable or unwilling to care for them. There are things worse than death, and in a lot of cases, that is life. And I will refer you to all the republican debates where the audience cheered Rick Perry setting records on executions, and yelling "let them die" with regards to health care. Condoleezza Rice's view is perfect- 'mildly pro-choice'. Not surprising as I love everything about her. She's an extraordinary and highly intelligent person. Romney would be very lucky to get her to run as V.P.

concern, contraceptives are not only used for preventing pregnancy, but also used to control ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors, endometriosis, hormone therapy for who have had hysterectomies, benign tumors in breast tissue, etc. Meanwhile its none of your business whether a woman takes contraceptives or Your paying too much attention to your major muscle and thinking others are of the same mindset.

Given the amount of tax deductions for children, welfare, etc. I would rather see my tax dollars go to contraception...it's cheaper. Of course that's irrelevant, since medical insurance is paid for with premiums, not tax dollars. Viagra doesn't have a copay, why should birth control pills?
Gotta love the "right to life" bunch. They're all for that right until it comes to children and adults who are denied access to health care because they can't afford it. Then it's "let them die" according to those compassionate religious people at the Repub debates.
