Stumping for Romney in Ohio, Pawlenty talks beer, biz

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Vice presidential prospect Tim Pawlenty won't talk about the vice presidential vetting process, but he will tell you about his favorite beers.

Putting in another solid day of swing-state advocacy on behalf of Mitt Romney, the former Minnesota governor pumped up the GOP nominee's small government policies, sampled local ice cream and won laughs from supporters when he deployed some recently-unveiled stump speech jokes at the president's expense.

"I don't know about you, but I enjoy a cold beer once in a while," he said at Dublin Pub in Dayton, Ohio, listing some of the available sudsy brands. "I know you probably have some Guinness here, and some Smithwick’s, and some Edmund Fitzgerald, who knows what else? Miller and Budweiser and all kinds of other stuff."

Imagining the unsatisfying scenario of being served a foamy pint of beer, Pawlenty delivered the punch line: "Barack Obama is all foam and no beer. And you can't live on the foam. His speeches are his foam."

That's an analogy that Pawlenty says "most Americans can relate to."

"I think most people can relate to the notion that if you want a cold beer you want the beer, you don't want the foam," he told NBC News after an appearance in Springfield. "That sort of gets in the way of the beer and it's not the substance of what you're hoping for. And that's kind of like President Obama's presidency. It's all speeches, it's all words, it's all fancy rhetoric but the results haven't been there."

His personal favorites? Minnesota-brewed Grain Belt Nordeast and Summit Extra Pale Ale, he said.

Two of the three men known to be on the general election ticket do not drink alcohol; neither Vice President Joe Biden nor Mitt Romney partake.

Pawlenty, wearing an untucked casual blue shirt and jeans, offered a fierce defense of the GOP nominee's record both on the stump and in an interview.

Asked about criticism of Romney's foreign trip, which has been marked by controversy over his public skepticism about London's preparedness for the 2012 London Games, Pawlenty dismissed the kerfuffle as "overblown."

"I think the criticism of his comments in London were way overblown and way overstated and I think the rest of the trip has gone well," he said.

While Romney is the frequent butt of jokes for his sometimes robotic-seeming interactions with strangers, his Minnesotan surrogate chatted easily with customers and employees when he stopped at Young's Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs. There, Pawlenty chatted with local elected officials - including Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine - and posed with children, even coaching them to crown him with "bunny ears."

And he showed the only hint of a diversion from his much-discussed "Minnesota Nice" aura when pausing for a photo with young workers at the ice cream parlor.

"Cross your arms!" he instructed them after one smiling snapshot. Demonstrating a grimace and a tough guy look, he added, "Now, look angry!"

Hah! Hah! You Republicans are just too Funny!

Hidden Swiss Bank accounts, Money Laundering operations in the Cayman Islands, "lost" Tax returns that we already know show outsourcing of good old American jobs to China and Mexico.

What else is Hidden in Mitt Romney's Tax Returns? Maybe shady Financial dealings with known or unknown Middle Eastern Terrorists groups? That's the "chatter" on the blogs and World Wide Web. Who really knows what damning incriminating evidence is hidden in Mitt Romney's "lost" Tax returns.

And what's all this I hear about Mitt Romney taking his wife's Olympic horse off as a Tax write-off, and then calling it a Therapy Horse". Hello? Is that even legal?

Being a Republican, I'm going to quote my favorite Republican, who said:

Mitt Romney, "TEAR DOWN THAT WALL" of Secrecy concerning your "lost" Tax returns, your Money Laundering shell companies in the Cayman Islands, and your Hidden Swiss Bank Accounts. Have you No shame?

Vote a straight Democratic ticket come this November 2012, and let's send Mitt Romney and the Republicans, back to the "DUNG HEAP of HISTORY" where they all belong.

I guess the late billionairess, "Queen of Mean", Leona Hemsely was truly channelling the inner Mitt Romney, when she was quoted as saying:

"I DON'T HAVE TO PAY TAXES, ONLY THE LITTLE PEOPLE PAY TAXES". (what a sick, demented, mean thing to say.)

So my fellow Americans, don't let Mitt Romney DESTROY the Middle-Class.

I want all Democrats, Freedom Loving Americans, ex-Republicans, sane Teabaggers, Undecided Voters, Policemen, Firemen, Teachers, all honorable Women, the Mexican and Gay community, and all People of Color, to vote a straight Democratic ticket come this November 2012.

It will be lots of Fun, and it's the right thing to do.

Well said, Mr. Pawlenty; great metaphor, and just look at all of the libs you pissed off just on this thread!

PS: Yreka, I'm betting Romney paid more taxes, proportionately, than you did. Libs hate paying taxes themselves (to wit, Turbo Tax Geithner); however, they love it when others have to pay, especially those who are more successful than they are.

What is your measure of success? He was given a job he couldn't fail at, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, we are to believe he single-handedly saved the Olympics - with a boat load of Federal Assistance. Sure, he has talent to turn millions into more millions as long as he has massive guarantees - with those odds in your favor, it would be hard NOT to succeed. Repubs are all Near Beer without any beer hops within the brew at offering a plan for the entire National economy after 8 years of failed trickle down economic policies that took a damaging toll in 2008. And compared to now, the economy of now is much better than 2008. In retrospect, what makes Repubs (Mitt Romney) think any beer hops reside in their economic brew???? These people are unbelieveably selfish and only concerned about their (Coporate) economy instead of our National (entire) US economy.

Within the margin of error, -only if you count polls taken with 10% more "registered" democrats. It's not even fall yet. Most voters haven't even thought about politics right now, they are enjoying their summer.

We already have real change in Obama.

Yes, an additional $5 trillion on the tab in HALF the time it took Bush.

increasing the public debt even more by increasing taxes on the middle class and reducing them on the rich.

I think you have that backwards, Byrum. The public debt has gone up $5Trillion in less than 4 years under Obama. (It took Bush 8 years to do the same). I thought Obama said he would cut the deficit in half? If you think that Obamacare will not raise taxes on everyone, including the middle class, then Mrs. Pelosi hasn't let you "read the bill yet." There are many hidden taxes in the healthcare bill that have NOTHING to do with healthcare. Such as when you sell your house, ...3% of the sale price will be collected to the government under the new healthcare bill. I don't know about you, but 3% on the value of my home is a $hitload of cash that the government doesn't deserve. You lefties seem to confuse the "rich" and small business owners. Tax small business owners, increase their employees healthcare costs and they will not hire, and isn't it all about Jobs? Gallup seems to think that is the #1 issue concerning voters.

It's so funny to see the toxic venom so may of you spew about Romney and the Republican Party in general. Yet the man you support is a total failure. He talks a good game but that's about it. He won in 2008 and even though I didn't vote for him I supported him as our president. I don't think he deserves a second term and I think Romney has the chance to do a good job. Sure he's rich and successful. His company made a lot of money. Some of the companies they invested in did well while others failed. That's the way business works. Ultimately they made money. If I had lots of money perhaps I would have offshore accounts and so would most of you!!! Let's talk about why the person you support will do a better job, not how much the other guy sucks!

Yes, an additional $5 trillion on the tab in HALF the time it took Bush.

That's because Mr Bush kept his two wars off the books. Mr Bush also added an unfunded 1/2 Trilion mandate to Medicare (part D.)

In addition, Mr Bush also left us with a destroyed financial system, which took quite a bit of money to fix.

I think you have that backwards, Byrum. The public debt has gone up $5Trillion in less than 4 years under Obama. (It took Bush 8 years to do the same).

May I suggest that you actually bother to examine what happened? Or are we supposed to not care about how and when the debt was incurred and just blame Obama because it was put on the books during his watch?

I thought Obama said he would cut the deficit in half? If you think that Obamacare will not raise taxes on everyone, including the middle class, then Mrs. Pelosi hasn't let you "read the bill yet." There are many hidden taxes in the healthcare bill that have NOTHING to do with healthcare. Such as when you sell your house, ...3% of the sale price will be collected to the government under the new healthcare bill. I don't know about you, but 3% on the value of my home is a $hitload of cash that the government doesn't deserve.

If it was hidden, how come you have some special knowledge about it? Or maybe it wasn't hidden at all. In any case, you are wrong. It is not 3% of the sale price, and it won't hit middle class sellers.

    From: http://www.factcheck.org/2010/04/a-38-percent-sales-tax-on-your-home/

But the claim that this would amount to a $15,200 tax on the sale of a typical $400,000 home is utterly false.

The truth is that only a tiny percentage of home sellers will pay the tax. First of all, only those with incomes over $200,000 a year ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly) will be subject to it. And even for those who have such high incomes, the tax still won’t apply to the first $250,000 on profits from the sale of a personal residence — or to the first $500,000 in the case of a married couple selling their home.

Fact of the matter is, you are just sloganeering. You have incomplete information, and you haven't bothered to educate yourself about the issues you are commenting about. Or you are just lying. Which is it?

You lefties seem to confuse the "rich" and small business owners. Tax small business owners, increase their employees healthcare costs and they will not hire, and isn't it all about Jobs? Gallup seems to think that is the #1 issue concerning voters.

What you righties seem to not understand is that we 'lefties' are often members of the rich and small business owners. We understand these issues and they are nowhere near as hard or as difficult on small business as you seem to think. Often, they make things easier. True, in every single individual case, but despite your obvious contempt for Ms Pelosi and Mr Obama, they are conscientious public servants. Their job is to work for the public good and that is what they have been trying to do, despite vociferous objections from some of the very people they are trying to help.

Let's talk about why the person you support will do a better job, not how much the other guy sucks!

Never mind the fact that Mr Romney's brilliant idea of decreasing taxes even further on the rich will pretty much ruin the middle class, the American consumer's buying ability and eventually the economy.

Mr Romney does not have the wherewithal to stand up to Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel will attack Iran, a President Romney will support his attack and we simply cannot afford a war with Iran. In fact, sanctions against Iran are working. Once we attack Iran, world sympathy will shift and we will not be able to maintain those sanctions.

We simply cannot afford a war with Iran and the subsequent increase in oil prices for as long as it lasts. Obama has proven capable of not attacking Iran.

Tell me Byron, how long have our troops been home now? Gotta get them home before the election. Oh, that's right, thanks for reminding me Byron, "The Privite Sector is doing fine".

Maybe you did'nt see the jobs added for last month? Is that what you call slowly getting better? You better do some SERIOUS reading. The jobless rate is @ 8.2 %. The average monthly job growth rate over the last 3 months averages to 75,000 a month. We need between 125,000-150,000 to keep up with the population growth. Thanks for playin Byron.

Byron, Our debt is almost $16 Trillion now. Spin it however you like, Obama said he would "cut the deficit in half" back in 2008 and did not accomplish that. Just like a major leauge coach, he didn't produce for 4 yrs. - now, he's has to go.

Harry Reid: Bain Investor Told Me That Mitt Romney 'Didn't Pay Any Taxes For 10 Years'

        #1.31 - Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:58 PM EDT

        Bryon Raum,

Actually, 'civilized' man relied relied on beer and wine at least 4-5000 years. Due to reliance on surface water (most dug wells are really not much more than cisterns fed by local water in the soil) which was easily contanimated by feces (human and animal) as well as decaying animal and vegetable material. The more civilized man became, the greater the concentration of people using the same surface water that they also polluted. Hence, beer (with its inherent cooking process) and wine (with a high enough concentration of alcohol to virtually disinfect itself) became the "safe" drinks, while water was always suspect. This situation lasted until essentially the 19th century CE, when modern public water treatment became relatively common. Still incidents, like the Milwaukee public water wisteria contamination, still occur. Evidence shows that beer was a major part of the diet of the Egyptian pyramid and tomb builders. St. Augustine decreed that each monk in his order was to receive a daily allotment of one gallon of beer. One of the earliest writings ever discovered is a Sumerian recipe for beer.

Since you seem uninformed about the important place of beer in history and human health, what other fallacies and half-lies do you believe?

        Tommy Lee,

Perhaps you would prefer to return to 2008 when monthly private sector job growth was - (negative) 450-600k per month?

BY the way, you might look at the first and second terms of Franklin Roosevelt as President. Remarkable parallels to Obama's success with Congress. Yet, the recession did collapse into a depression like that of 1929-1939 due to a few hold-overs from FDR's presidency, FDIC insurance, the centralization of money printing with the Federal Reserve (it had been available for any "national" bank), and Social Security.

About Reid calling Bush a loser (From http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-250_162-693713.html ) :-

Shortly after the event Reid called the White House to apologize, his spokeswoman Tessa Hafen said. Reid spoke with Bush adviser Karl Rove, asking him to convey the apology to Bush, who was traveling in Europe.

The Nevada Democrat expressed "regret for the comments, that it was inappropriate," Hafen said. Reid was giving a late speech in Salt Lake City and was unavailable for comment, she said.

Mitt Romney argues he would be a good president because of his experience at Bain Capital. However, evidence is piling up that he made millions at Bain by firing American workers, outsourcing
jobs, and keeping his money overseas.

Romney could shed some light on this by releasing multiple years of his tax returns, as every major presidential candidate has done for decades. This practice was actually pioneered by Romney's father, George, who released 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 1968.

WHAT IS MITT THE TWIT HIDING?

However, Mitt the Twit Romney has only released one year of his tax returns, increasing suspicion he got rich mainly by dismantling the American middle class.

Hey facts (you really need a new handle), that list was copied from Rolling Stone. Plagarism is the one thing that can get you banned at FR (About the only thing).

Why don't you do a little research of your own once in a while?

BTW you don't think that anyone with the time could come up with a similar list for Obama? They all have big money donors, the sooner you realize that the better you'll sleep at night.

Sure smitty or maybe Obama could name Jeffery Immelt his Job czar. "Those shovel ready jobs, hahaha...weren;t wuite as shovel ready as we thought they were"

You make it sound like only multi-millionaires and billionaires have anything to gain from a Romney presidency. That is wrong, if Obama has his way effective in January taxes will go up on 1.2 million Sub-Chapter S corporations with an estimated job loss of 700,000. Don't go implying that tax cuts for the "rich" don't help the average person. Obama holding tax increases like a sword of Damocles over the rich have kept them from hiring. We cannot make it through another four years of this mis-management,

White Collar Auto, it is possible that Obama's big money supporters have abandoned him. Before he died, I understand Steve Jobs went to the White House. Obama had no idea what businesses needed to survive and would not take advice from a genius who built a small business into one of America's great success stories. I see a lot of the rich who supported Obama in 2008 jumping ship. Also, I understand that his donations from small donors on the internet are down.

              Bruce,

Yes, how did Apple become so large? By moving jobs to Chinese sweat shops so bad that some of their employees, virtual prisoners, commited suicide to escape. But it more than doubled Apple's market value, so it was just good business.

                #4.6 - Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:44 PM EDT

                Bruce,

Contrary to popular political rhetoric, slow job growth is NOT related to either tax laws (real or proposed) or "Obamacare". Slow job growth IS related to: growth in automation (design of simplifified products assembled by machines with minimal human support or labor), off-shoring of labor intensive and easily shipped products, and primarily by the lack of market consumption (either in the US or in our global trading partners).

Remember, the USA is not the only economy struggling. In Europe, only Germany and a few very small players are staying even. Even the Chinese and Indian economies are slowing. This means less money for American goods overseas and fewer jobs at home. Domestically, low consumer confidence, contraction in credit availability, lower real pay checks for fewer people means less money for American goods here at home, and in Mexico and Canada. Note, today's article on Americans holding on to their cars for an average of TEN years and up to 200k miles. The average trade used to be at about 3 years and less than 70k miles. Now, where does tax code enter these conditions?

All these bills had fleas and had to be blocked because they were bad for America. Why doesn't Obama come up with bills without strings and conditions that make them onerous to America?

Everything Obama does has only ONE goal... To weaken America and kill its middle class and small business! OH I for got - Solyndra - Obama did that! (Remember Obama's speech on small business or have you convenient forgotten?)

Obamas credit card reform? A FULL YEAR for credit card companies to raise rates, bankrupting hundreds of thousands of Americans

ObamaCare? Good lord what IS in those 2700 pages? Why the 5000 NEW medical experts at the IRS?

Tax raises? Wait till January 1 and see how your paycheck shrinks - that is IF you are lucky and your employer does not shrink your job first because of Obama policy!.

It would appear that the Democratic supporters are very much upset with Mr. Pawlenty's comment. Could it be that the truth hurts? The analogy is indeed valid - Obama has been all froth and no beer - no transparency in government, no solution to the "recession" (which he allegedly ended in 2009, only to have it rear its ugly head repeatedly since), no foreign policy (other than repeatedly apologizing for America's greatness), no shovel ready jobs (except for shoveling up the BS he has spouted constantly for the past 3+ years), no progress on many, many fronts (all blocked by those nasty Republicans) and on and on. A little substance from the White House instead of empty rhetoric might be a welcome change. Remember in November! Also, annoy a liberal - use facts and logic.

Red, how exactly can we get out Bush's eighty plus year worst ever economic mess he gave Obama?

What exactly will work and what will Romney do?

Romney's economic policies are Bush on steroids. But it will work this time because Romney has the magic underwear.

                      Rob00,

Obama ran on just that. Apparently he didn't know anything in 2008 either.

Pawlenty is a bland pale ale and Romney isn't even near beer.

Obama is like warm..., stale beer.

I love my beer and find any comparison between him and beer frankly demeaning to beer. I get the analogy though he does love to hear himself speak (teleprompter?)
