LONDON -- Mitt Romney will try to rebuild momentum for his closely watched foreign trip Saturday when he arrives in Israel, where the presumptive GOP nominee will look to escape two days' worth of negative headlines plaguing his campaign in London.
Romney will arrive in Jerusalem with hopes of finding surer political footing than in London. He spent most of his two days in the United Kingdom's capital trying to clean up a controversy spurred by his comments to NBC doubting London's preparation for the Summer Olympic Games. He and his wife Ann attended the opening ceremonies last night.
This will be Romney's fourth visit to Israel, and it's expected to be another whirlwind day of meetings with top officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (a friend of Romney's from their days at Boston Consulting Group decades ago), and Palestinian leader Salam Fayyad, whom Romney also knows from previous visits.
Romney will also give a public speech while in Jerusalem — his first such engagement thus far during his foreign trip — that is expected to be heavy on praise for America's most important ally in the Middle East, with whom Romney has repeatedly called for the U.S. to "lock arms" on the international stage.
The presumptive GOP nominee has pledged to keep with diplomatic tradition by not criticizing President Obama or his foreign policy while on foreign soil, but in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Hayom (owned by conservative mega-donor Sheldon Adelson), Romney ripped the president for various elements of his policy toward Israel, including the president's call for the Israel to consider returning to its pre-1967 borders, including land swaps with the Palestinians to compensate for disputed territory.
"The president has also spoken of returning to 1967 borders — they are indefensible. And acting as a negotiator and usurping the primary role played by Israel in negotiating for its own future is not the right course for America to take," Romney told the paper.
Romney also indicated in his interview with Hayom that his primary audience on this trip to Israel was, after all, American voters. In 2008, President Obama carried the Jewish vote with 78 percent of the vote, a lead into which Romney's campaign would love to make inroads.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk explains:
"The context is a political campaign in which there is a sense that because of tensions between Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu the American Jewish vote is up for grabs," said Indyk, who served under Bill Clinton. "In that context its natural that the Republican campaign would seek to emphasize the friendships Romney has in Israel and the problems Obama has had with Netanyahu."
Indyk, who has authored a book on Obama's foreign policy, described Obama's security record on Israel - enhanced Friday by the signing of a new agreement - "impeccable," but said Romney had room to appeal to Israelis and Americans by showing more warmth to Israel than the sometimes cold Obama.
Sure to be on the agenda in Romney's various meetings: the specter of a nuclear Iran, the most pressing security issue to Israel.
"Again, he's got to walk between the raindrops, because while he'll try to draw distinction and claim Obama is weak and he is strong on this issue, he's got to be careful not to give the American voting public the impression if he's president he'll go to war with Iran," Indyk said.

What did he say in London what was so bad? That it was disconcerting to have all that security around and that the impending transportation strikes were discouraging? If we can't even speak about the obvious in such mild terms, there's no hope for achieving any sort of international understanding. What a bunch of children to quibble over such nonsense.

he said nothing that was incorrect; the head of British security made the same statement, the private security firm dropped the ball, the security personnel they hired was understaffed, under-trained and not ready for the task, that they were being paid hundreds of millions .

Well, you are definitely spouting all the propaganda handed to you by msnbc and the rest; not one of your assertions seem to come from critical thinking. They told you what to think, and you think it. Obama's campaign says Romney is an outsourcer, is out of touch because he is rich, and can't restate things already stated by the press without scrutiny.
If anything, I think Romney knew the Liberal Press would take off this in the usual, hypocritical manner (Obama doesn't get any of this scrutiny, and wasn't vetted by the press or his party in 2007). It shows me he's not afraid to be honest, and wants to lead us in the Oval Office, not merely win a bumper sticker contest and act like a childish prom-queen for the next four years.
Obama represents every thing wrong with this country, and the "hope" is that the intelligent, thoughtful majority won't stand by let the Dems buy the presidency and install a weak demagogue, the worst President in US History. It wasn't that he said security problems were "disconcerting" They were. To do it on foriegn soil was flat out wrong, undiplomatic and unpresidential. The real big gaffe that Mitt the Twit was mentioning his meeting with MI-6 that no one is supposed to talk about. The British didn't even acknowledge that MI-6 even existed until 1994.
He has even already upset some Israelis because he is having a fundraiser on one of their holy days. OK they are jews and it seems they have a holy day every other day it seems but thats besides the point. Doesn't it seem wrong holding a fundraiser for president on foreign soil? He supposedly can only accept money from us citizens there but I find it dishonarable and unethical. Anyone else agree.

Aside from quoting MSNBC and childish insults, I have not read one scrap of compelling opinion that would convince me Romney would not be a great President. The current POTUS, Obama, will go down in history as the worst mistake the country has ever made. With $750 million dollars from rich donors, the Dems bought the white house and installed a vacuous demagogue, writing themselves a blank check right away (the stimulus plan). We've all seen that, at the Executive level, the Democratic Party is out of touch and essentially obsolete. Their plan to seize and take power always revolves around exploiting poor people, minorities, and every other group they victimize. Lenin-style propaganda and nearly a billion dollars, given from the "1%" we're all supposed to hate now, put most unqualified person in office. We are paying for it.
Romney, on the other hand, is consistent, kind, successful, has a record of actual achievement and competence. Outsourcing? Right--Obama used stimulus money (your money, tax money) to outsource jobs to other countries. But MSNBC won't talk about that.
In short, I can respect people if they lean far left in things, but I just can't understand why anyone would vote (in the past or future) for Obama. If you did or are, you have been completely duped by a corrupt system of media lies and corporate Robber Barons.

Give me one example from a reputable source that proves President Obama hates American Citizens. I haven't seen him own a company, fire all the workers, outsource their jobs to another country, file bankruptcy, and then be afraid to release his taxes.

Since the Republicans preferred Sarah Palin over Romney before I guess it's a good thing for the "god of money" that she isn't running this time around. Actually I miss her almost as much as Dan Quayle.
But I know all republicans are please when the "god of money" descends from his golden life and blesses the common people when he p*sses on them and then leaves to go back to worship his money.

The Opening Ceremony was fantastic and quite moving at times. There is some anger out there that Matt and Bob talked too much. I, however, enjoyed most of their comments as each nation presented their atheletes. I enjoyed the history behind most of their comments.
Way way too many commercial for sure. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies should be commercial free.

1. What he said about the Brits' Olympics security problem is fact; it's been all over the news for weeks.
2. So, the Brits got their panties in a knot; so what?.....they don't vote in our election.
By the way, visiting here in Missouri this week, I saw a statewide poll conducted by the extremely liberal Post Dispatch; Romney 51% to Obama 42%....and all three possible Republican candidates lead the Dem Senator MaCaskill by large margins......too, too bad for the lefties.

Say Michael, I can make the case that Americans are more concerned with their beer than they are abortion. We amended the oh so sacred constitution to prohibit alcohol, then inside of five years we repealed that amendment to the constitution. Legal abortion has been the law of the land for well over 35 years, if the citizens of the US really wanted that to change that, it would have changed by now. If we want to change the laws on abortion better tie it to a bill concerning our beer.

Yes, seriously, we are both adults here. I know full well that PP receives federal and state tax dollars. I also have seen the public budget for PP and it does not appear that they are using 'tax dollars' to support a woman's choice. Although, the righties would LOVE to prove this one, but it seems they cannot. My grandmother always taught me "I recommend KNOWING before speaking".

Quick thoughts on the above:
1. The reason that Mitt's insults matter is that a president needs to be capable of visiting our allies without creating diplomatic incidents. (And cons in general have this problem - they run in the primaries and trash all foreigners, including "socialist" Europeans, and then when elected they find out the rest of the world hates them. Go figure.)
2. Mitt got a nice present from NBC when they cut to him during the USA's turn in the Olympic parade of nations, and said that he "saved" the Utah games. They didn't mention that he "saved" the games with a $500million government bail out.
3. Conservatives, including Mitt, must have been very confused when the games celebrated the English love for the National Health Service (that's right, righties - those who have single payer systems love the efficiency, love cost, simplicity, and security of national health - heck, I'd argue that the fear we have of medical costs is actually a detraction in our ability to live a free life).
4. The elephant in the room, and I know it is not PC to bring up, is that Mitt went to Israel with a background as a two-year missionary whose message was that Jews deserve to be tortured for all eternity in Hell for refusing to believe the true and perfect message of God. This rightwing evangelistic aspect is why Obama will win 80% of the Jewish vote again.
Pat, similiar news is coming out of Wisconsin regarding deliberate actions to suppress voter participation. There have been "erroneous" robo-calls, flyers sent out to heavily democratic voter precients advising the people that election dates are wrong, "voter caging" efforts, and illegal suppression of voter registration information. A second judge has also found Wisconsin's new voter ID law to be un-Constitutional.

Example: I was on my way to Costco a few weeks ago and I notice this big shiny black GMC Envoy tailgating me so I check my speed, which is on cruise control and sure enough I'm going the set 36 in a 35 mile zone. So after a bit I notice this guy gets even closer and begins to weave from side to side a bit......so I slow down a bit ( I have my grandkids in the car---6 and 4 years old)...immediately this tailgater gets even closer and starts flashing his lights as me. Soon we came to alight and I was turning left and tailgate boy was going straight so we were side by side at the light....I rolled down the passenger window and called to this guy (crew cut hair greased, dress shirt rolled up to the elbows, expensive sunglasses, reeking of some kind of man perfume and smacking away on a wod of gum.........I said "excuse me, but I was doing 35 in a 35 mph zone so why were you tailgating me and swerving and flashing your lights at me...I have my grandkids in the car and you put them in danger."...to which he replied in a very aggressive tone "do you really want to go there?!"....astounded I said "yes I do. Why were you tailgating me and by the way that is illegal you know."....to which he said "Fu** you!!!." and flipped me off. A simple apology would have been nice...but then it struck me and I said "YOU ARE A REPUBLICAN AREN'T YOU?"..........to which he answered

The British have no idea what to do with Obama. His election came as a rare surprise to them. They had assumed that McCain had itin the bag. A lot of that had to do with Rupert Murdoch's drum beating and yellow journalism.
But when Obama was elected Murdoch managed to get quite a few of the British people, and especially the British conservatives (real conservatives not to be confused with American conservatives.) The line that Murdoch constantly fed the Brits was that Obama's grandfather was unjustly imprisoned and tortured by British soldiers for three years in Kenya and that Obama was very likely to hate the Brits as a result. This really bothered a lot og Brits because they were well aware of the atrocities committed by British troops in Africa,and especially those from the sl-called "Zulu Uprising" and thought it seemed quite reasonable that Obama would hate all British. Even the BBC picked up the thread and ran with it without checking for any shred of supporting evidence. There is still some of that fear left today even though Murdoch is no longer a factor in British public opinion and the BBC has long since determined that it ha no basis in fact.
youraloser -- Thanks for saving us the need to call you names. What we see with the president, and with Democrats in general, is the realization that "compromise" can't happen without reciprocation from the other Party, and that even trying to compromise fails to win approval from rightwingers.
The Teapublicans, in particular the Tea Party are only in congress to protest and block any governance. The GOP/TP supporters are now so far to the Right and operating merely on irrational hatred. So there is no making them happy.
So, what the Democrats have finally started doing is just stop pretending to negotiate with Teapublicans who do not come to the table in good faith, and what President Obama is doing is going for it, going for what he really wants and believes. Because his base will get fired up seeing him being intellectually honest, and swing voters will like seeing at least one candidate with a core, conviction, and compass.

The president has been a moderate in so many ways, and definitely offered olive branches many times only to have that branch slapped away by Teapublicans.

Anyone reading Romneys plan knows there's nothing in it that will reduce spending. His cutting the top rate from 35% to 25% will cost 5 trillion in revenue over 10 years and be paid for supposedly by eliminating "loopholes" such as taxing previously exempt programs such as employer health plans. This is simply a transfer of 500 billion a year from the middle class to the rich. He does also propose cutting spending on social programs 120 billion but will increase military funding 260 billion increasing net spending by 140 billion a year. How does anyone think Romneys plan will bring down the deficit?
Those on the right rant about those on welfare, medicaid or long term unemployment but no republican president in the past has changed the requirements to get those benefits and nothing Romney proposes would do so either. I am just a bit curious as to why our politicians have to go to Isreal? Is it perhaps that Isreal is in charge of USA. Israel is not an ally to the USA , we are their care takers and without us they would parish within few weeks. Frankly, the rest of his trip doesn't matter very much anymore. He's made such a mess of things, he can't "retroactively fix" what he's done thusfar. What is so sad (and I would imagine maddening for the conservatives out there) is that this trip couldn't be set up as more of a softball for him...all conservatives that he's visiting.
My guess is they'll try to pivot away from any foreign policy issues asap....but pivot to what? Romney has nothing really to pivot to.

Well gee mhrjhn, SS was never intended to be a retirement account, it was never intended to be the sole source of income for retired workers. What about the dependent children of the breadwinner who dies young, what about the disabled who not able to earn, as a country we decided not to cast these people aside, we would provide some dignity of life for them as well. The sad fact is since trickle down economics has destroyed wages and benefits in this country, many young people will have nothing but SS, because they cannot save for their retirement, because they don't earn enough to save anything, and their employers no longer pay health and retirement benefits. The median income in Texas is $11.20 an hour, (BTW I made more than that as a grocery clerk in 1982 plus full benefits) with that wage rate it is mighty brave of their employer to offer a matching 401K when they know damn well these people will not have a dime left over to match. In any event don't try to portray SS as an individual retirement plan, it was never intended as that, however at the present rate of wages and benefits for many American workers it may become the only thing they have in their old age.

Our President must be a sage thinker and Romney's comments are of concern. For the country and people of Great Britain have been and will continue to be our strongest ally. Criticism of Great Britain on an internal matter, which this is, is beyond the scope of a President or potential President. Thoughtless comments only serve to damage the goodwill between our countries.
Romney is not off to a good start. In only two days he has left a very important partner with a bitter taste in their mouths. My level of concern is heightened wondering if in an attempt to correct his London mistakes he might "try to hard" in Israel and over step himself.
I'm beginning to think he's not going to be a good choice for president, at least on an international level, and as a world leader this is important. Mike, I think the US press started the tiff with Great Britain. Romney was commenting at the time he arrived in Britain about reports saying the security staff was short and other REPORTS in the British papers and he had reason to say what he did. When he reviewed the situation he gave credit to the British. It is the press that made it an issue.
