Thune to Romney: Be yourself

SPRINGFIELD, VA -- Sen. John Thune has some advice for Mitt Romney: Be Yourself.

The South Dakota senator told NBC News that the Romney he knows does not always come across on the campaign trail, and that may be why voters are having a tough time relating to the presumptive Republican nominee.

"I've traveled with him in Iowa and been on the bus with his family and him, and they're just incredible, wonderful, normal people," Thune said. "And that's a side of him that I hope voters in this country get an opportunity to see.  And I think really he just needs to be himself."

Thune was here today to address Romney supporters and volunteers at victory office opening. On Thursday, he traveled to Virginia Beach to do the same, joining a slew of other Romney surrogates who are making similar campaign stops in battleground states throughout the country this weekend.

Thune, who himself had considered entering the presidential race, said that the more Americans get to see Romney, the more they will be able to relate to him beyond simply being a former businessman and governor.

"I think often times in politics -- you have tendency to -- people sort of put you in a bubble," he said. "And I think the more that he [Romney] gets a chance to get out in front of the American people, interact with them, in a way that I've had an opportunity to interact with him, they're going to see someone, who I think they're going to find is an incredibly, not only strong leader for our country, but someone that they really will believe in and can have great trust will take this country in the right direction."

Much has been of late about Thune's own political future.  He is considered to be a top contender to be chosen as Romney's vice president. Though he declined to say whether or not he is being vetted, he said he does not expect Romney to ask him to join the ticket. But he added "any time you get a chance to serve your country and if you're really serious about public life obviously you don't rule  options out."

And if VP is not in the cards for him, speculation is rampant that he could be next in line to become Republicans' leader in the Senate. If that is in the cards, he is confident he'll have a Republican to work with in the White House.

"It's always hard when the lights go on, and you know...People have a tendency to perhaps be a little bit more conscious of things that they say, and do when you're in public life, said Thune. "But I will say this: If the American people can see what I've seen in Mitt Romney who out on the campaign trail is very relaxed, someone very comfortable in his own skin, someone who has a real sense of purpose of what he want to do for this country. It's a quality that I think the American people are really going to be drawn to. And I think they're going to see that between now and November, and I think they're starting to see that already."

Impossible..!

Even Willard doesn't know who his real self is... lol

He will do or say anything to pander to the moment.

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to believe the Grand Poobah's in the GNOP decided to allow Willard to run this time around, just to get him off their back going forward!

The NitMitt has been a thorn in their sides for years, might as well throw him out as the sacrificial lamb and focus on 2016!

They couldn't possibly be stupid enough to think this clown is Presidential material?

RCP (Average of polls) as of 7/25/2012
Wisconsin moved from toss-up to lean Obama
FL move from tie to +1 for Obama
NC moved from +1 for Romney to a tie.
10 Swing States: Tied in NC (15), Obama leads in 9, Romney leads in 1.
Delegates: Obama = Solid/Likely 179 + Lean 52 = 231+ Swing 101 = 332*
Delegates: Romney = Solid/Likely 131 + Lean 50 = 181 + Swing 10 = 191

When I saw Romney speak so akwardly at a rally in Portland, during the primary, I thought, if a North Eastern Republican like Romney can come across as an alien to a friendly gathering in Maine, how he is going to come across in other regions of the country? I quess I should have added "how is he going to come across in other countries?"

Maybe the French will like him, they think Jerry Lewis is hilarious.

Better be careful Brockton, this is a lib-controlled website and the so-called moderators seem to have 2 sets of standards for tolerance. Flame-throwing and name-calling liberals get a pass, no matter how personal the attack. SeekingSanity called "Patty" a "filthy, lying piece of gutter trash" yesterday but has received no suspension.

Conservatives, however, face a much stricter tolerance and are "disciplined" at a much higher rate relative to their negative remarks. I was recently suspended a day for using the tern "libtard", but apparently "teatards", "repukes" and "rethuglicans" is okay with the moderators of this website.

What we are seeing is a once viable forum for political discussion has now been apparently allowed to become a libbie chat room where the liberals congregate to see who can out perform the other in tyring to destroy Romney.

Liberals do not want to talk about $16 trillion national debt, because Obama has been a huge part of the debt increase. They do not want to talk about the federal budgets, because there have been none. They do not now want to talk about the GDP report because it is trending negative for Obama. They do not want to talk about unemployment because it remains high at 8.2%.

They simply want to attack, attack, attack Mitt Romney, because they desperately believe that is the only way they can win the election for the Incompetent-in-Chief. The sad thing about it is they may be right. Obama certainly will not win by running on his record of turning the economy around. The economy speaks for itself, and the impending burden of Obamacare only makes it worse !

Brockton - it was not inflammatory - just terribly redundant - you've posted it over and over and over. Try something new. Oh, and for a change, try being honest. I know that's difficult for Republicans but give it a try. Try putting the blame for many of those things where it belongs - on the obstructionists of the GOP. Oh but, that would totally suck wouldn't it? To have to admit that your treasonous leadership is responsible for most of what is wrong with the country?

Yeah - try a new approach - like honesty. Nope, that's not going to happen, is it?

Be it people clinging to their guns and Bibles, to slurpees to if you have a business ... you didn't build that.

Of course, after 3 1/2 years of seeing what he actually does reveals everything anyone with a functioning brain stem needs to know, but reality, economic indicators and actual performance don't matter.

Now Obama doesn't really say what he really said.

Oh well .... works on the cluelees and willfully blind.

So all of this countries woes are because Obama with the bullypulpit of the Presidency could outmaneuver, outsmart, or negotiate with one house of congress that has only been controlled by republicans for about 19 months?

But, over the next 4 years have the party "leadership" (I use that term loosely) take notes on Obama and maybe you can actually come up with a person of value and integrity. Not holding my breath - but miracles do happen1

Brocton - it's clear YOU don't understand. Our government is NOT controlled by Democrats. Please take a course in Government - my guess is you should start with 101. The GOP has filibustered proposals more than any other time in history! They have obstructed getting anything done.

And, before you come up with the lie about the Democrats being in control for 2 years - it was 7 months during which time Ted Kennedy was ill so he missed votes and there were several recesses. So, in actuality, the Democrats were in control for about 4 months.

See how this works when you actually know what is going on?

No data to support your contention, Brockton, I suspect that it is purely the excuse you are using to re reg.

Here is the truth of the matter. If you are posting on other sites moderated by Newsvine, NBC for example, it is far easier to get banned for comments that are personal attacks, threats, vulgar and the like. On First Read, it is generally because you are a re reg. Unless you threaten someone. Inflammatory language, as you have noticed, may get your post collapsed, but it is not going to get you banned on FR.

It is not a matter of conservative v liberal. It is the way it is.

The only thing Treasonous is the White House Situation Room. There has been according to Diane Feinstein an "avalanche" of national security leaks that has resulted in "lost assets".

If this was Bush how many stories would run on this site about whether there's a need for an independant investigation? I'm guessing at least as many as Romney tax return stories.

Brockton - if this had been Bush the righties on this sight would be whining about how unfair things were and they would be setting up congressional hearings to try to impeach the congressmen. But, as you can see, it's not Bush and the lying GOP is getting away with selling out the country for their own benefit.

Since we didn't hang Cheney for outing Valerie Plame my guess is you've got no game.

Brockton, re your comment #1.52. To reiterate what Seeking Sanity said, how many of the last six or so presidents had the opposing party get together before his inauguration and conspire to do everything in their power to obstruct everything he does and make him a one term president? There may be people in this country who regard that as reasonable and fair, but I think it's disgusting and unconscionable.

On March 6, 2007, the courts did convict Scooter Libby, Chief of Staff to the Vice President, of "obstruction of justice, giving false statements to the FBI and perjuring himself, charges embodied in four of the five counts of the indictment". Richard Armitage, Unites States Deputy Secretary of State under George Bush later confessed to outing Valerie Plame as punishment for statements her husband made that were critical of the Bush administration.

It looks like SeekingSanity has plenty of game to me.

Romney IS being himself.

The "CEO Romney" in London has been a prime example of the fallacy that business experience has anything to do with being a statesman or POTUS or Commander in Chief or leader of the free world (with the rest of the free world and half of the US in opposition to Romney). The most basic premise Romney is running on is backfiring because it is complete nonsense that businessmen are somehow automatically qualified for the highest office in the land.

And blatant lies in campaign ads...

And of course, when will Romney release 8-10 years tax returns. Show us the tax returns!

Sailcat -

Scooter? Sheesh ... the only problem is that it was well known that the leak came from Armitage both for the Novak interview and the Woodward interview. The Woodward interview was even on the official State Department calender!

The Washington Post revealed it was Armitage, the Associated Press published it, Newsweek had an article, the New York Times reported it was Armitage, CNN confirmed it was Armitage .... White House counsel Alberto Gonzales was informed it was Armitage .... same with Attorney General Ashcroft ... Fitzgerald knew it ...... yet, 3 months later started his investigation fishing trip.

Regarding Armitage not admitting he was reponsible for the leak until after the investigation .... HE WAS ORDERED BY FITZGERALD TO BE SILENT UNTIL AFTER THE INVESTIGATION!

And btw - why was Armitage not charged?

Could it be that he didn't know Plame was an agent because the State Department didn't know she was an agent .... if she actually was a protected agent? Kinda funny how that worked out, huh?

Scooter? Getting tripped up over the unrelated Miller interview?

And btw - was Libby charged with leaking Plame? Is that a big negatory?

Of course it was the big evil Bush / Cheney / Rove / Barney the First Dog conspiracy, right?

And ole Joe and poor Valarie decided to sue the big bad boys .... which got dismissed .... which was appealed ... which was rejected again ... which was taken to the Supremes ... which refused to even waste their time on it.

Can you say .... Plame-out?

Actually, they did market the whole deal pretty well .... even got a sweet movie deal from lib land -Hollywood out of it.

Heck, Bush should have just issued a bogus illegal executive order like Obama did ... it's not like 2 federal agents got killed .... hundreds of innocent Mexican citizens being killed by letting 2,500 assault walk fast and furiously to Mexican drug cartels, right?

newday,

bob, I always believe that people ought to take responsibility for their own behavior. Don't necessarily think that is a conservative v liberal thing either.

But as you said earlier ....

There is no right to use Newsvine to post. It is a privilege, their site, they set the rules. When you violate the rules, you can't use the site.

... and in the context of my comment ....

Now change a few words and apply that to illegal immigration ...

Or .... "There is no right to use Newsvine to post for Mexican citizens to enter the US illegally and live in America. It is a privilege (to legally apply and immigrate), their site to our country, they set the rules our representatives set the rules and laws. When you violate the rules violate our laws and come here illegally, you can't use this site stay in our country.

Yet Obama and libs don't seem to want them to "take ownership of their behavior" do they?

Oh well, maybe it isn't their fault .... maybe they came to America for all those wonderful bridges and highways - maybe the bridges have ownership of that.

Or maybe we should credit that special person in their life .... their teacher coyote or cartel smuggler ... afterall, we are just one big village like the conservatives say, right?

Ah ... there's the real sour Sailpuss we all know and luv.

After Scooter's conviction he was immediately pardoned by that son of a bitch Bush.

Actually the prison sentence was commuted - he paid the quarter million fine, did the 400 hours community service, did the supervised release and forfeited his law license .... all on an issue - an accussation he was innocent off - outting Plame!

Libby was tripped over the NIE crap with Judith Miller ... the NIE crap that had no mention of Plame or a covert officier,

It was a political sham.

Following that abuse of executive power there was obviously no point in going after Armitage.

Fitzgerald stated he went after the guy that admitted the leak, Armitage hard. He just couldn't legally convict him because Armitage didn't know she was covert because the State Department didn't know she was covert ... NOC was the issue.

Oh well ... although the pinch hitter ended up striking out, at least you battled and fouled a few balls off - much better than Seeping has ever done.

    #1.87 - Sat Jul 28, 2012 12:26 PM EDT

"... all on an issue - an accussation he was innocent off - outting Plame!"

No, Bob. that is what is common referred to as a lie. Scooter was convicted of "obstruction of justice, giving false statements to the FBI and perjuring himself, charges embodied in four of the five counts of the indictment". In my never-ending quest to acquaint you with the concept of truth and honesty, Scooter was convicted of lying to investigators and obstructing their investigation of the affair, not for outing Plame. NOW do you feel smarter? No? I'm still not surprised.

"Fitzgerald stated he went after the guy that admitted the leak, Armitage hard. He just couldn't legally convict him because Armitage didn't know she was covert because the State Department didn't know she was covert ..."

The answer is that Armitage, who was charged with nothing and bragged that he hadn't even consulted a lawyer, was former Secretary of State Colin Powell's right-hand man at the time. Armitage merely denied knowledge that Plame was covert despite his access to intelligence to which his lofty position as Deputy Secretary of State entitled him, and he skated. Obviously Scooter didn't think Armitage's story held water because he worked hard at stalling the investigation and lying to prosecutors and Libby himself was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice for his efforts. Fitzgerald later said that if the executive branch was prepared to pull the teeth out of the sentences the court was passing down he saw no need to waste his department's resources by pursuing charges against other culpable parties in this affair. Karl Rove also was deeply involved in this dirty affair, but Fitzgerald gave up any hope of successfully bringing him to justice. Nonetheless, following the revelations in the Libby indictment, sixteen former CIA and military intelligence officials urged President Bush to suspend Karl Rove's security clearance for his part in outing CIA officer Valerie Plame.

The moral to this story is, if you are going to commit blatantly dishonest and criminal acts, it is good to be closely associated with a Republican president.

Romney is the obvious gop candidate, the left is ramping up its bashing. Here's the differrence... The left swings at flies but the right can hammer Obama on his lack of leadership, inability to govern, wasteful spending, wracking up the national debt, not improving the economy, high unemployment and a multitude of other items the left chooses to ignore.

There isn't any competition between the two. Obama is a total failure and Romney has been a success in his life.

    Let's look at the choices:

Failure Success... Hmmmmm the left goes for the failure... Makes perfect and total sense to me, knowing who the left are and what they stand for.

Where are Obama's solutions? Has anyone seen them? That's a resounding NO! Unemployment is still above 8% (recorded). National debt is fast approaching $16 Trillion. Deficits in the Trillions. Credit rating of the US fallen. But, of course there's always more food stamps for people... like never before. That seems to be Obama's only solution... Make people dependent on the government.

It's amazing how the idiot liberals will trash Romney over the simplest things. They demand more tax returns and when he doesn't provide them liberals say he's hiding something, but when Obama sealed his education records Obama gets a pass. What can education records prove? They can prove that he filed for admission as a non-US citizen. They can prove that he received aide based on citizenship. They can prove that he's not the scholar liberals think he is. They can provide answers to the questions people have about his legitimacy. And liberals do not want to know if he's actually legitimate. To liberals that does not matter... but it matters what Romney's financial status is.

Doesn't anybody see anything wrong with this logic?

In other news today, aging D-list rocker Ted Nugent said in an interview on Glen Beck, That those people in the movie theater should have all been armed.

Nugent also said that an AR15 is a sporting and hunting rifle, not an assault weapon.

The AR15 is the semi automatic version of the M16.

I wonder what the letters AR in AR15 stand for? Hunting rifle?

I spent 4 years in the army. Qualified expert with the M16. And in a dark room full of tear gas against a guy with body armor, I could not tell you that I could take that guy out. It would take a perfect "kill shot". It would be almost impossible with a rifle. With a pistol?

Oh I can see it now, a war zone with bullets flying everywhere. It was bad enough coming from one deranged man killing and wounding several people. If everyone was armed there would be unthinkable carnage that would resemble a battle field with no one alive.

A semi-automatic weapon is necessary to shoot Bambi or his mother? Does one need to get those mallards with an AK-47? To show accuracy of one's aim does one need to shoot a target with so many holes there is no target left because the weapon sprays bullets instead of a single accurate shot for a bullseye?

I don't like guns although I scored high years ago in the military. I was accurate in my aim and didn't need tons of ammo to hit the target whether paper or flesh. Only cowards need to feel secure because they are armed to the teeth.

Has there ever, or at least in modern times, been a candidate for president so secretive?

He'll be glad to share anything with us except, you know, stuff that would tell us what kind of person he is or what kind of president he would be. Is it possible to charge a candidate with "contempt of electorate?"

Does Mitt believes a husband should not know anything about his wife's interests? Does Mitt simply act like those Fabulous Rich who don't spend much time with their loved ones and simply think it's all about money?

Romney is being himself. People act differently in different situations, and Romney thinks that being a CEO is the best way to be President.

A CEO is a very different creature than a President of a country. A CEO has total control (especially if they are Chairman of the Board, and sole owner), and does not have to work to get a consensus, if they don't want to. It is better if you get 'buy in' from those in the lower management positions, but it is not always necessary, and everybody who works for him knows it. A CEO's focus is on what is best for profits, not the workers, and customers who create those profits.

A President of a country, especially this country, must deal with two other co-equal partners - the legislative, and the judicial - as well as work with other leaders of other countries who may see themselves as 'co-equals' or even 'superior' than the President. Not only that, those other leaders may agree to do something (through a treaty, or legislation) but then not follow through. Unlike a contract between two companies, if that happens, there is equivalent sanctions to what can be agreed on in a contract. Yes, there is the WTO, and you can do things like sanctions, but the other country could just ignore you, unlike under a legally binding contract subject to a legal jurisdiction.

A President's focus needs to be on what is best for the all of the people of the country, not the businesses, not the most wealthy, or just a few people, and not just the people in his political party. As stated in the Constitution, this government is created for, and by 'we the people', nowhere does it say 'we the bankers', or 'we the businessman', or 'we the rich'. Therefore, the President must focus on all of the people, unlike a CEO who mus focus on the business, and help those that make money for the company while 'weeding out' those who only cost money . . . or 'apparently' cost money (a worker's wage may 'cost the company money' but they actually make the company money by adding value to the product, or goods).

Romney does not understand these differences, thus his statements like, "Corporations are people, my friend.", or his support of tax, and budget policies that benefit only the wealthy, and hurt the middle class, and poor. Not to mention, his bumbling criticisms of the Olympic preparations where he did not even realize that pointing out that there were problems with security, or the fact that he just had a 'secret' meeting with the leader of the most secret British intelligence agency would be seen as dangerous things to the security of the games, and the British intelligence infrastructure. Romney may understand business (and more power to him for that) but he certainly doesn't understand what it takes to be POTUS.

Romeny is on his own 'apology tour', he keeps having to apologize for his own actions, and words. (can't take credit for this one, I heard it on the radio this morning).

As Governor of Massachusetts, one of the bluest states, Democratic voters vetted him. Are you saying the voters in MA didn't see something; or that being governor, for one day, doesn't eclipse President Obama's executive experience prior to his election?

            #13.2 - Sat Jul 28, 2012 11:18 AM EDT

If he was such a great Governor, M.J., why didn't he serve for more than one term? Why isn't he highlighting his term, if he was such a great Governor? Fact is, his term as Governor was lackluster, at best, not to mention dropping job growth rank to 47th in his last year, a drop from about 44th(?) when he started as Governor. The only good things that I've heard he did was to sign a law to ban assault rifles, and the health care legislation he is now trying to run away from.

His governorship just proved the old adage that you can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. He lied about how he was going to treat a woman's right to choose, and LGBT issues when campaigning for Governor. Once he was in office, he reversed himself on both issues. And you think we should trust him now? He has evidently fooled you.

And, no, being governor for one day did not eclipse President Obama's experience before he became President.

Nice try at deflection, M.J., but you did not address the fact that being a CEO does not necessarily prepare you to be a good President of a country. And, evidently from Romney's record as Governor, it did not prepare him to be a very good Governor, either.

Try to stay on point, M.J., if you can.

Senator Thune is wrong. The most damaging moments for Romney have come when he was being himself. "Himself" is an out of touch child of wealth and entitlement who sees everyone and everything as just dollars on a balance sheet and has no comprehension of or compassion for anyone who is not also extremely wealthy or cannot contribute to his own fortune. "Himself" is a raging egomaniac with daddy issues, trying to assert his oedipal dominance by achieving the most prominent thing his father failed to. "Himself" is a politician so shamelessly self-serving as to be a caricature, totally devoid of integrity or substance, calculating every position and every statement against polls and their impact on his electoral chances, willing to throw anyone, any ideal, and any policy under his campaign bus if he thinks it will help him politically.

I'm still waiting for Mitt's birth certificate. I want proof he's really an American... after all, his grandfather had 5 wives in Mexico to avoid the "conservative laws" of the U.S. so are we really sure about him? But, that seems to be a Romney tradition; if you don't want to obey U.S. laws, find "legal" ways to avoid them. If all Americans did this, we might have had trouble protecting our nation in times of war when we had a draft. If all Americans avoided paying their taxes by hiding their "wealth" offshore, we wouldn't be able to finance our government. With just those two simple points I feel THAT behavior doesn't sound very American to me. I know I could write more, but these are enough to keep me very worried... a political candidate who strongly whose party strongly advocated two wars on credit and more war in our future, but whose FIVE SONS have NOT served our country like other Americans. This seems rather "DISCONCERTING" (as Mitt sez).

EXPLAIN THIS REPUGNICANS: Why do the right wingnuts always blame the "liberal media" for everything they are caught on? FUNNY, Rupert Murdoch owns the Star and who named him "Mitt the Twit" and another paper and it was the CONSERVATIVE Mayor of London and CONSERVATIVE Prime Minister of England who became upset with Mitt and verbally came back at him... then, the papers picked up on it. If you were to research the owners of most of these newspapers and television networks, you'd find many times they are NON "Liberals," so stop whining and owe up to the fact the Mitt is himself at ALL times - a fool. The only thing he was clever about was how to burn American workers for their jobs, retirement funds, healthcare plans, etc. while pocketing all the proceeds including monies acquired for loans. In addition, the American taxpayers had to bail out at least one company I know of for $44 million in retirement funds which our government guarantees like the FDIC. Bain Capital pocketed that money and your boy Mitt keeps his returns from the public because we will see his windfall profits from this sleazy ripoff of the employee retirement plan and the American taxpayers who ended up paying for it. Let's get some FACTS out on the table, Bubba.

As a moderate I say Obama through 2016 and Hillary through 2024.

Retake the House, Democrats, and capture 60 seats in the Senate. Pack the Court with young progressives. Roll back Citizens United and advance single-payer. Cut loose the defense industry welfare state and dedicate the savings to rebuilding infrastructure.

Getting there will take some effort as it will be Christie whom Hillary will have to defeat in 2016. He is a dangerous bully, combining just enough of Reagan's folksy everyman with Cheney's sinister manipulations.

Christie and those like him are the true enemy. Romney, soon to be dispatched, is inconsequential.
