First Thoughts: Halftime

Candidate Mitt Romney, who was slammed by the British media for comments he made about London's preparedness for the Olympics, now says that "after being here a couple days …  I'm absolutely convinced that the people here are ready for the Games."

We’ve reached halftime in the Obama-vs.-Romney contest… Romney’s rough Thursday in England and he tries to clean up the mess… NBC’s Matt Lauer interviews Romney on “TODAY”… Obama camp goes up with its Olympics TV spot… And why doesn’t the public know Romney better?

*** Halftime: With tonight's Olympics opening ceremonies, we've now reached essentially halftime in this presidential contest. Keeping with the sports analogy, the two teams are going into the locker room with Obama ahead of Romney -- 14-13 if it's a football game, 49-43 if it's basketball. In other words, it's still anyone's game. Both sides have had their share of smart play and boneheaded mistakes, and now we get a chance to breathe, relax, and prepare for the second half, which kicks off with Romney's VP and the two conventions. The fourth quarter starts with the debates (three between the presidential candidates and one between the VPs). As we wrote earlier this week, the Obama-Romney race is beginning to boil down to a pull of two forces: the economy (which is a drag on Obama) vs. likeability (which is a drag on Romney).

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd explains how Mitt Romney offended the British public.

*** Romney’s rough Thursday: But if it's now halftime, Team Romney -- with what happened in Great Britain yesterday -- concluded it by committing a false start, a holding penalty, and then an interception. Yes, yesterday was that bad. Bottom line: Romney's interview with NBC's Brian Williams, in which the presumptive GOP nominee said there are some "disconcerting" signs about the London Games' security and preparations, ignited a controversy in Great Britain. Prime Minister David Cameron responded, "We're holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course, it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere." (Cameron’s obvious reference to “nowhere” -- Salt Lake.) And the British press pounced. The Guardian: “Mitt Romney's Olympics blunder stuns No 10 and hands gift to Obama.” The Daily Telegraph: “Mitt Romney's Olympics gaffe overshadows visit to London.” The London Times: “Romneyshambles: PM’s snub.” And London Mayor Boris Johnson topped it off by saying at a rally: “There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we are ready. Are we ready?" Ouch.

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney sparked a political firestorm during an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, in which he questioned whether London was ready for the Olympics. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

*** Clean up in Aisle 5: Romney later tried to clean up the mess after visiting Cameron at 10 Downing Street, “offering effusive praise for the London games, and calling the city's preparation for the event ‘really quite an accomplishment,’” NBC’s Garrett Haake reports. “I don’t know of any Olympics that’s ever been able to run without any mistakes whatsoever, but they’re small, and I was encouraged, for instance to see, things that could have represented a real challenge—such as immigration and customs officers on duty, that is something which was resolved and the people are all pulling together,” Romney said, later adding: “I’m very delighted with the prospects of a highly successful Olympic games.” Earlier this week, we wrote how risk-averse Romney's trip (to England, Israel, and Poland) was, at least compared with Obama's four years ago. But Romney's first full day on his trip proved that you can stumble even on the easiest of routines. Today's agenda: He has a photo spray with Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny at Ireland’s embassy in London at 10:15 am ET, and attends the opening ceremony, which begins at 4:00 pm ET.

*** Romney’s interview with Matt Lauer: But before that, Romney and his wife sat down for an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on “TODAY.” Asked to respond to all the controversy in Britain, Romney said, “After being here for a couple of days, it looks to me like London is ready.” When Lauer followed up, inquiring if Romney is walking back his earlier remarks, the GOP candidate said he’s “absolutely convinced” that London is ready and that the athletic events will overshadow anything said by the politicians. Lauer also asked Romney if he was proud of the campaign he’s running, given all the negativity. His response: I’m proud that my campaign has focused on the economy. And Romney -- once again -- said he wouldn’t be releasing more of his tax returns.

*** Obama’s Olympics TV ad: Speaking of the Olympics, the Obama campaign is up with the TV ad it’s going to air during the opening ceremony of the Summer Games. It’s a positive spot, with fast-paced music and words from Obama while on the campaign trail. “We're a nation of workers and doers and dreamers. We work hard for what we get. And all we ask for is that our hard work pays off,” Obama says. “I believe that the way you grow the economy is from the middle out. I believe in fighting for the middle class -- because if they're  prospering, all of us will prosper. That's the idea of America, and that's why America is the greatest nation on earth." At 10:15 am ET, the president signs the United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act (interestingly just before Romney heads to Israel), and he holds two fundraisers in McLean, VA.

*** Why doesn’t the public know Romney better? We want to make one final point at this halftime juncture of the presidential contest. In his interview with NBC’s Brian Williams, Romney was asked why Americans don’t know him better. His answer: “I realize this is still early for a lot of people in the political process. Labor Day is usually the time when people focus more attention on candidates…[M]ost folks won't really get to see me until the debates and will get a better sense of the character that I have. And I guess also my wife and my sons and daughters-in-law, they're doing the best job they can to get the real story about who I am.” But chew on this: Romney has been actively running for the White House for six years now. As Charlie Cook writes in National Journal, “In my judgment, Romney’s poor [poll] numbers go back to his campaign’s obsession with talking only about the economy and not attempting to define who Romney is as a person, as a way to build trust and strong positive personal feelings toward their candidate.” If you look at the fundamentals of this race, Romney should be ahead. And the fact is, he’s not. Why not? Because he has fumbled his biography. When you have to say there’s still time to introduce yourself, it’s a tacit admission that you haven’t done it yet.

Good morning, First Read! My goodness, you are up early today!

There is a larger issue with Romney and people not knowing him. He and Annie believe that the "little people" do not have the right to the information. They are the "betters" and therefore will dictate what people may or may not know. Queen Anne said it herself: ( paraphrasing): "you people know all you need to."

In their very limited world, that should suffice. They have spoken, others must obey.

This just isn't going to play well, and they don't get that.

Be interesting to see if Mittens can keep his fine Italian leather shoes out of his mouth today.

newday:

Only we political junkies are actually paying a great deal of attention to the race right now, the election won't actually begin for most of the electorate until after the Repulican convention. It wil be at this point that America gets to know Mitt Romney better. Whether they decide they like him remains to be seen.

As for him "keeping his shoes out of his mouth", I agree 100%. All he needs to do is compliment the host countries every chance he gets and talk about what strong allies we are. On all other topics he should just keep his mouth shut.

I respectfully disagree, Fool's Gold. People are going to pay attention to this, because it is the Olympics and is receiving an awful lot of press.

Moreover, our Allies are paying attention. They must wonder what has happened to our good sense.

The larger issue is this: we need two healthy political parties putting forth ideas, whether I agree with them or not. We have to ask in all seriousness...is this the BEST that the Republicans have? Really?

But, I appreciate your comment. So unusual to get feedback in a respectful way on this site.

It might make a difference if the British were allowed to vote in our elections, but they are not. With the possible exception of partisan Democrats and liberals, this is a non-issue. Remember, what Romney said may have been ill-advised, but it was the truth. It doesn't help his foreign policy creds though, which means he will have to do better in Poland and Isreal or make my day by putting Condi Rice on his ticket.

Except, Fool's Gold, the British are turning him into a joke. It will become fodder for late night comedians here. If he becomes a national joke, and I think he runs the risk of that happening, people won't vote for him, no matter HOW divided this country is.

I'm not sure I can deal with the idea of disagreement being handled respectfully here, do you think we might model new behavior for people?

WOW Guys!

Extra shot of expresso this morning? lol

Why does Willard hate our armed services so?

He managed to dodge the draft in Viet Nam by peddling around France on his magical bicycle handing out Mormon Bibles.

Not one of his 5 sons has ever served this country for a single day in any capacity.

Now, Willard refuses to go to Afghanistan to meet with our active duty military members currently protecting this country, while traipsing around overseas!

Leads me to believe, Willard does not want to get his perfectly manicured hands dirty, much like little Annie!

We don't have to worry about Mitt Romney apologizing for America, all right.

He'll be FAR TOO BUSY apologizing for his own dumb a$$!

Romney has a following on Twitter, it seems: #romneyshambles

Kinda says it all, huh.

We've yet to see how he'll place his foot in his mouth when he visits Israel. Seems Romney and Netanyahu might have some reminiscing to do, after all, Romney is his BFF:

Romney:

"We can almost speak in shorthand. We share common experiences and have a perspective and underpinning which is similar."

"Israel's current Prime Minister is not just a friend, he's an old friend".

Wow...pretty close friends, huh.

Netanyahu:

"I remember him for sure, but I don't think we had any particular connections, I knew him and he knew me, I suppose."

Yeah, I suppose...

Good morning Dawn, I love the picture of your little dog. A Papillon right? Very cute.

Welllllll, I think the fool may have a point, but it will be pointless in the second half of the game as we shall see. With the naming of the VP choice and the two conventions Joe and Joleen Sixpack will wake up and notice that there is a Presidential Race underway and at this point it's fairly close.

That's the good news and the bad news. Everything that has gone before and been discussed and dissected adnausium (sp?) by the PJ's (Political Junkies) will be all new to them. They'll suddenly go "Bain Capital"? and that argument will have a second set of legs. Likewise, the slow economy will suddenly become an issue and have it's intended negative effect on the President. Only we, the PJ's, will understand that the slow economy is largely the result of Bush 43's mismanagement and the inability of Congress to work and play well with others.

So, it will almost be a new game.

The hit that "Mitt the Twit" (Geez, ya gotta love the brits) is taking now may have a greater impact than it deserves because Joe and Joleen ARE paying attention to the Olympics and from our standpoint that's good.

So, enjoy the halftime show. It ain't over till it's over, but I think we've got the best team in the league and the chances are looking better for a fourth quarter field goal and a big win.

Just keep chanting "TAX RETURNS..TAX RETURNS...TAX RETURNS..TAX RETURNS.." even if there are no smoking guns the perception that Romney is hiding something from the American people will be just as fatal.

Have a great weekend everybody, and I do mean everybody!

Fool's Gold, agree. Speaking the truth isn't the best political move when overseas. Sure the stories about preparedness were disconcerting. But as long as he doesn't have a "Polish Death Camp" moment, his minor gaffe is history by VP announcement.

With the way things are going so far, any guesses how long before they start flinging shoes at this nincompoop?

Here's what the Slovakian Foreign Minister thinks of Willard;

From ThinkProgress;

But it turns out that the Eastern European allies themselves don’t feel so spurned by President Obama’s decision, and some even support the new plan put in place. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal in Washington on Thursday, Slovakian foreign minister Miroslav Lajcak, who is also a deputy prime minister, said changing missile defense plans was a non-issue for his government:

People have moved on. We are in a different situation now. We are discussing a different project. I see no reason to revisit discussions from three years back.

In fact, this has been a non-issue for quite sometime. The Polish foreign minister said at the time of the new missile defense configuration announcement: “When President Obama announced the new configuration of the system, we did say that we liked the new configuration better, but I think you didn’t believe us.”

Lajcak went on to give the Journal an explicit endorsement of the Obama missile defense plan, lauding its NATO auspices rather than the abandoned Bush administration’s bi-lateral approach with host countries. While Romney said in his speech that Obama was bowing to Russia — whom he considers the U.S.’s “number one geopolitical foe” — Lajcak, in the Journal’s words, said “the U.S. and its European allies must continue to try and explain the defense plan to Russia, which remains skeptical.”

To Say:

To say that Mitt Romney is the master of flip-flopping is an understatement and really old news.

To say that Mitt Romney is so wealthy he can buy elevators for his cars is a fact.

To say that Mitt Romney is so disingenuous you can't believe a word he says is accurate.

To say that Mitt Romney destroys his political opponents with carpet-bombing negative ads is a true statement.

To say that Mitt Romney is disliked by his political opponents is legitimate because they have genuine reason to dislike him.

To say that Mitt Romney remained the CEO, sole shareholder, and President of Bain until 2002 is what the documents report.

To say that Mitt Romney is withholding his tax returns because he knows there is information there that is damaging is probably true.

To say that Mitt Romney can keep a secret regarding his taxes, but blurts-out to the world that he met with MI-6 chief Sir John Sawers is inexcusable (on both counts).

To say that Mitt Romney calls the UK Opposition Chief Millibrand "Mr. Leader" is pitiful and demonstrates no diplomatic skills.

To say that Mitt Romney is viewed more unfavorable than favorable is reflected in polling data.

To say that Mitt Romney has no soul could be true, but only God knows for sure.

And to say that Mitt Romney will win in November is wishful thinking.

I really enjoy laughing at lefty liberal’s whining and complaining about businesses that “send jobs overseas” or “outsourcing”. They claim to be “progressives”, yet they despise “progress”. And the funniest part is that they have no one else to blame except their beloved federal govt. Barry was right when he said the federal govt (not Al Gore LOL!!!) created the internet, which is a major factor in the ability of the global economy to function successfully. Even worse for the lefty liberals, the internet was created by the evil military-industrial complex (cue David Walker’s head to explode). The genesis of the internet was DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which pioneered the use of computer networks by Dept of Defense contractors (i.e. private industry) to communicate with each other on a real time basis. Capitalism is like water running downhill, it will overcome all barriers lefty liberals try to put in place toimpede it.

Ain't capitalism great!!

Romney - Biden 2012!!!

Wait....huh? Has Grimey gone crazy??

LOL...no. But, I read a really interesting article that detailed multiple scenarios in the electoral college that could result in the political story of the century...a 269-269 tie. And if that happens, the process would be the following. In the House, each state delegation would get a vote for President. Meaning that unless it is a crazy wave for the Dems, Romney would win the Presidency. (Republicans hold a 33-16 edge I believe). However, the Vice Presidency would be determined separately by the Senate. And if the Dems held the Senate, they could elect Biden. Thus, giving us a Romney - Biden administration. Far-fetched? Of course...but interesting to think about.

Have a great Friday and a great weekend everyone!!

USA!! USA!! USA!!

(Special shout out to Phine...have a GREAT weekend at home!!)

Romney's Apology Tour

Good morning' TGIF

I can't wait to see what that fool Mitt R-money will do stupidly today on his foreign trip . He has no bona fides. I find it hilarious that the right wing accused our President of being on an apology tour. Well, as it turns out this is defiantly Willard "Myth" Romney's" Apology Tour". LOL ☺ ☺ ☺!!!

Mitten's should be about 12 inches tall by now and shrinking incredibility more and more. Even the MI 16 won't be able to find him soon.

I bet Willard "Myth" Romney's can get the gold for his flips during this joke of a Foreign Policy Tour.

10 Downing Street must think Willard "Myth" Romney's is doing a wonderful job of being a "Bloke" there in London. If I had to advise Mittens I would tell him:

Since you don't even know W-T-H you are most of the time ; just go see your Queene Anne's dressage or go check on your money in your safe haven and S-T-F-U; stop embarrassing US!!! You are nothing more than an outlet for fiascoes; as a possible presidential nominee you're already a laughing stock in the world; just an utter failure .
As Former American sprinter and gold medal winner Carl Lewis has waded into the row said... "stay home if you don't know what to say."

Scouring England’s newspapers last night and this morning I could not find one that did not bash Romney for his Olympic scale gaffs. I will leave it to Carl Lewis, who spoke to The Independent: "Every Olympics is ready, I don't care whatever he [Romney] said. I swear, sometimes I think some Americans shouldn't leave the country. Are you kidding me, stay home if you don't know what to say."

Well Carl, wait till he sets foot on the continent with snippets of dinner conversation as to how Americans must choose between "a European-style welfare state" or "a free land." Of course dissing the other members of NATO will be just fine seeing as they have not loaned us any of their busts.

Stay tuned for the Poland stopover and watch as he baptizes Birkenau-Auschwitz, then off to Israel to start Desert Storm part III.

As you may or may not know, the latest Quinnipiac poll has the Presidential race in the crucial state of Virginia in a dead heat at 44-44. Because of this, recently both sides have been ramping up their campaigns there which brought this little nugget to my attention:

Pets, deceased receive forms to vote in Va., fueling complaints

Voter-registration forms being mailed to Virginia residents are addressed to dead relatives, children, family members in other states, non-U.S. citizens, people with similar names, existing registered voters and residents' cats and dogs.

The errant forms are among tens of thousands being distributed in Virginia by a national voter-registration group that pre-populates the documents with key information, including names and addresses of prospective voters.

The mailings have become a source of confusion among many who receive them and are creating headaches for local registrar offices, which must spend time in a busy presidential election year investigating which of the forms are legitimate.

The mailings also can create opportunities for voter fraud
, election officials say.

Virginia election officials have contacted the nonprofit group, the Washington-based Voter Participation Center, to express their concern and ask it to adjust its methods.

The Virginia Board of Elections has received more than 100 complaints so far from residents and state registrars about the third-party voter-registration forms. The Voter Participation Center mass-mails the forms, targeting Democrat-leaning voting blocks such as young adults, unmarried women, African-Americans and Latinos. The center calls these voting groups the "Rising American Electorate."

There is a lot more to this article which was originally printed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Sorry, I can't provide a link.

If I'm not mistaken, pre-populating the registration forms with information is illegal in most states although I'm not sure if this is true in Virginia. What makes this story suspicious is that that one of the senior staff members of The Voter Participation Center is Taylor Williams who previously worked forObama for America in the campaign's media planning department.

Recently, the Romney Campaign filed a complaint with the Virginia state attorney general. This prompted The Voter Participation Center to create an ad making fun of this complaint, pointing out that cats can't exactly walk into a polling center and vote. I think the concern here would be that in such a tight race some unscrupulous individuals would be able to use fruadulent registrations to vote absentee by mail.

Apologies for this semi-coherent post, but this morning I've got to fly and don't have the time to edit.

Have a good weekend.

And you have tax returns.

It was Hillary that was running the campaign - issues and personal interest - and Obama was running on celebrity status , a nonsensical I am famous for being famous ideology (hope and change).

But reality is cruel and people again will vote their personel self interest. You can scream "TAX RETURNS" until the cows come home.

but at the end of the day your liberal voice put it best

:people will take the flo test then decide how to vote. Flo is the lady who works at Denny's 8-8. Shes working 12 hour days and still not making it, her friends aren't making it. She'd like to get her old job back but that company is gone. Come voting day all the political ad's in the world resonate because she only knows what's been happening just isn't working and something has to give. Then she will cast her vote:

Go tell Flo that Obama has actually been doing a GOOD JOB - and that the next 4 years wont be anything like the last 4 years. I am sure she's never heard a man tell her "i'm sorry baby that'll never happen again, It'll get better i promise.

The arguments on here are just a waste of time. I don't know what the readership of Newsvine is (or even the knowledge that it exists) but based on the viewership ratings of MSNBC, it can't be much. The conversations are degenerating to a point where it is sickening to one's stomach to see the name calling, impugning integrity of others, etc. The moderators have let a rancid low life gutter snipe like Seeking Sanity break all the Code of Conduct rules with her disgusting and cowardly attacks. The moderators are cowards as well.

Seeking Sanity is a troll of the worst kind, and unless the so-called right wing posters on here are just some made up entities to feed the likes of disgusting posters and human beings like Feisty, NewDay, Beverly, Ron, IR, Gingerbread, Auntie Facist, Jody, etc. they should be protesting to the high heavens to have her banned and vile attacks deleted. If you are protesting -- Fools, Joe, BrianB, NOJO, Spanky, WAC, etc. -- then the moderators are truly cowards.

Have we become a Jerry Springer society??? Is that what your vision for this country is?? My time is not worth this. There is not one left leaning poster on here that has the guts to come from behind the computer screen and face me or anyone else face-to face.

So, spend your time on here since it looks like some are doing it 24/7. That's good because your message is only going to choir. There is a little over 100 days left to save this country from the current tyrant and we are going to volunteer to man the phone banks to tell people just how much of a miserable piece of sh1t Barack Hussein Obama is and this country can not afford four more years of this socialist pig. I'll reach a helluva lot more people than you who sit around in this circle jerk.

The bottom line is I know the American people and they will vote not in the polls but with their hearts on the issues that are directly facing the country now -- deficit, taxes, economy, business, capitalism, borders, language, culture, spending. They will not vote on things that happen overseas, that happened 40 years ago, that happened 20 years ago, that happened 10 years ago. Barack Hussein Obama has been a liar and a deceiver and his socialist vision (with communist ties) are starting to show and it is making those who were on the fence but supported him the last time sick. The error of 2008 will be corrected this November.

Mitt and the Republicans suck BIG time. Check out the polls for the Congress & Mitt. Mitt is losing to President Obama in most swing states.

After the Olymics the people will paying more attention to Mitt. He will lose the election. I'm guessing the nomination too because the Republicans really don't like him and there is a great possibility Mitt is a felon. My guess is Mitt 's just riding the wave until Tampa. Either he will step down and nominate his VP choice or be forced to step down.

What is Mitt going to do take his retroactive position @ Bain?

Good Morning to all.

I'm going to pick of my favorite person who writes about Romney,

He managed to dodge the draft in Viet Nam by peddling around France on his magical bicycle handing out Mormon Bibles.

And what did President Obama served in. Oh yes! Organizer in chief.

This chatter on the Olympics, and not talking about the Economy slowing (see MSNbc FR) is nothing more than garbage and distraction.

How many gafs does the President make? Are you folks Blided by the light that flows out of his hallo?

We'll see.

Fool's Gold,

Not only is he a national joke Willard is also an international. Did you hear what Charles Krathammer said?

Charles Krauthammer Runs Out Of Adjectives Slamming Romney's 'Olympics' Gaffe

He said Romney's comments were, "unbelievable, it's beyond human understanding, it's incomprehensible - I'm out of adjectives."

According to Krauthammer, Obama has done so many things to damage the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. that all Romney had to do was show up and "say nothing," that his very presence would be a rebuke to Obama. Krauthammer added, "It’s like a guy in the 100-meter dash. All he has to do is to finish, he doen’t have to win. And instead, he tackles the guy in the lane next to him and ends up disqualified.”

Jody:

I believe his multiple gaffes in London will resonate in the US--his ineptness overseas will remind voters of George W. Bush.

He may be even more inept. Bush managed to turn Tony Blair, the liberal P.M. of Britain into his "poodle" in the view of British folks after he convinced Blair to join his dive into the Iraq quagmire. Romney goes over there and on his very first day he manages to anger the current conservative P.M., David Cameron.

so you are upset that you don't know what books Obama's read or who his heroes are? But you don't question 3 years of Romney's unknown role as Bain's CEO, whether he ever paid ZERO taxes, where his money is invested, and why he has a policy of a systematic elimination of hard drives that belong to the taxpayers?

You want to know what grades Obama got in school but you don't question the fact that Romney signed documents as the CEO and president of a company but today he claims he wasn't there?

What a bunch of silly nonsense. The libs are going to town because Romney was asked for his "expert" opinion how the London games were progressing and he gave an honest critique.

Gee I wonder how many voters will change their mind over his statement?

All this while the Obama economy continues to implode.

--Unemployment over 8% for the longest period in over 50 years

--Increase the debt in less than 4 years more than all 41 prior Presidents combined.

And take a look below at what Obama's progressive policies have done to increase poverty in our country.

The answer is clear four more years of Obama would be the ruination of this country.

List compiled by Michael Snyder....

The following are 40 facts about poverty in America that will blow your mind….
#1 In the United States today, somewhere around 100 million Americans are considered to be either "poor" or "near poor".
#2 It is being projected that when the final numbers come out later this year that the U.S. poverty rate will be the highest that it has been in almost 50 years.
#3 Approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be either "low income" or impoverished.
#4 Today, one out of every four workers in the United States brings home wages that are at or below the poverty level.
#5 According to the Wall Street Journal, 49.1 percent of all Americans live in a home where at least one person receives financial benefits from the government. Back in 1983, that number was below 30 percent.
#6 It is projected that about half of all American adults will spend at least some time living below the poverty line before they turn 65.
#7 Today, there are approximately 20.2 million Americans that spend more than half of their incomes on housing. That represents a 46 percent increase from 2001.
#8 During 2010, 2.6 million more Americans fell into poverty. That was the largest increase that we have seen since the U.S. government began keeping statistics on this back in 1959.
#9 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of "very poor" rose in 300 out of the 360 largest metropolitan areas during 2010.
#10 Since Barack Obama became president, the number of Americans living in poverty has risen by 6 million and the number of Americans on food stamps has risen by 14 million.
#11 Right now, one out of every seven Americans is on food stamps and one out of every four American children is on food stamps.
#12 It is projected that half of all American children will be on food stamps at least once before they turn 18 years of age.
#13 The poverty rate for children living in the United States is 22 percent, although when the new numbers are released in the fall that number is expected to go even higher.
#14 One university study estimates that child poverty costs the U.S. economy 500 billion dollars a year.
#15 Households that are led by a single mother have a 31.6% poverty rate.
#16 In 2010, 42 percent of all single mothers in the United States were on food stamps.
#17 According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 36.4 percent of all children that live in Philadelphia are living in poverty, 40.1 percent of all children that live in Atlanta are living in poverty, 52.6 percent of all children that live in Cleveland are living in poverty and 53.6 percent of all children that live in Detroit are living in poverty.
#18 Since 2007, the number of children living in poverty in the state of California has increased by 30 percent.
#19 Child homelessness in the United States has risen by 33 percent since 2007.
#20 There are 314 counties in the United States where at least 30% of the children are facing food insecurity.
#21 More than 20 million U.S. children rely on school meal programs to keep from going hungry.
#22 A higher percentage of Americans is living in extreme poverty (6.7 percent) than has ever been measured before.
#23 If you can believe it, 37 percent of all U.S. households that are led by someone under the age of 35 have a net worth of zero or less than zero.
#24 A lot of younger Americans have found that they cannot make it on their own in this economy. Today, approximately25 million American adults are living with their parents.
#25 Today, one out of every six elderly Americans lives below the federal poverty line.
#26 Amazingly, the wealthiest 1 percent of all Americans own more wealth than the bottom 95 percent combined.
#27 The six heirs of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton have a net worth that is roughly equal to the bottom 30 percent of all Americans combined.
#28 At this point, the poorest 50% of all Americans now control just 2.5% of all of the wealth in this country.
#29 Back in 1980, less than 30% of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs. Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.
#30 Right now, the United States actually has a higher percentage of workers doing low wage work than any other major industrialized nation does.
#31 Half of all American workers earn $505 or less per week.
#32 In 1970, 65 percent of all Americans lived in "middle class neighborhoods". By 2007, only 44 percent of all Americans lived in "middle class neighborhoods".
#33 Federal housing assistance outlays increased by a whopping 42 percent between 2006 and 2010.
#34 Approximately 50 million Americans do not have any health insurance at all right now.
#35 Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid. Today, approximately one out of every 6Americans is on Medicaid.
#36 It is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americans to the Medicaid rolls.
#37 Back in 1990, the federal government accounted for 32 percent of all health care spending in America. Today, that figure is up to 45 percent and it is projected to surpass 50 percent very shortly.
#38 Overall, the amount of money that the federal government gives directly to the American people has risen by 32 percent since Barack Obama entered the White House.
#39 It was recently reported that 1.5 million American families live on less than two dollars a day (before counting government benefits).
#40 The unemployment rate in the U.S. has been above 8 percent for 40 months in a row, and 42 percent of all unemployed Americans have been out of work for at least half a year.

jim #'s -- Perhaps you better read that report in depth. The fact is consumers are hurting. Wages have been stagnant for decades now thanks to right wing policies. What's amazing is that in the past few years theses idiots are doubling down on stupidity with "right to work" laws that are nothing but an effort to keep the masses poor and the business owners rich. Pretty effing stupid, right? If the right continues on this path of destruction and obstruction eventually business will feel the full brunt of the consequences. They will lose a good portion of their customer base due to the fact that consumers no longer have extra money to spend. Thus the vicious cycle continues thanks to the right wingers bent on destructing the middle class. Take your complaints to those who deserve it, ignorant REPUBLICANS.

Perhaps you forget 70% of GDP is based on consumers spending.

On June 24, the House resoundingly defeated a bipartisan resolution that would have authorized the mission for a year, in a sharp rebuke to Mr. Obama, as 70 Democrats deserted him on the vote.

Didn't deter President Obama in a show of executive power that would have made Dick Cheney proud.

They know that he is aware of protocols in foreign countries that are mysteries to you and your fellow ideologues.

Maybe he is but the First Lady wasn't aware

The rules are set in stone, and so the eagerly watching British media sputtered when the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, briefly put her hand on the back of Queen Elizabeth II as the two chatted at a reception. Etiquette is quite stern about this ("Whatever you do, don't touch the Queen!"). In 2000 John Howard, then Prime Minister of Australia, got plenty of criticism for apparently putting his arm around the Queen to direct her through a crowd. He denied actually touching her, but photographs suggest that he came quite close. (Another former Australian Prime Minister did put his hand on the Queen in a similar circumstance and was later branded "the Lizard of Oz.")

And lets not forget about the President's latest gaffe regarding an ally when he spoke about Polish Death Camps. I know Romney is bad but even he shouldn't be able to top that one.

A year later, the president made himself the target of a searing denunciation by Mr. Tusk after he referred on Tuesday to a “Polish death camp,” instead of a Nazi death camp in Poland, in bestowing a Presidential Medal of Freedom on Jan Karski, a hero of the Polish resistance to the Germans during World War II. Mr. Obama was guilty of “ignorance, lack of knowledge, bad intentions,” Mr. Tusk said.

The White House expressed regret for what it described as a “misstatement.” But Mr. Tusk was not mollified, saying in a statement posted on his Web site that the United States needed to “end this with class.” Poland’s president, Bronislaw Komorowski, sent a more diplomatically worded letter to Mr. Obama asking him to correct the record.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/world/europe/poland-bristles-as-obama-says-polish-death-camps.html

You do get it, don't you?

Who did Tom Brokaw work for again?

you are posting Rush Limbaugh’ snippets of an October 30, 2008, interview between PBS's Charlie Rose and NBC's Tom Brokaw. Limbaugh used Bernard Goldberg's edited transcript that falsely suggests that comments Brokaw and Rose made about their lack of familiarity with the candidates applied only to Obama when, in fact, they were referring to both Obama and McCain.

So before you accuse anyone of hypocrisy, please use something other than Limbaugh’s edited version of events!

BTW, the fact that Limbaugh was the only one who was attracted to this "transcript" like flies are attracted to $hit was not a big RED FLAG for you?

So 3.5 years into a Democratic Administration, 5.5 years into a Democratic Senate, 2 years of a Democratic House, 8 years of the Clinton administration with a Democratic House and Senate for periods of that Administration and its still right wing policies that are to be blame.

Can I ask what is the point of electing Democrats because they seem to be completely ineffectual at reversing "right wing policies".

I did laugh this morning a Mika Brezezinski's comment that Obama has been surprisingly strong on foreign policy (for a Democrat). That's because his foreign policy is indistinguishable from the Bush Administration.

What and who is Mitt Romney? Apparently no one knows but Romney, or, if others do know they won't tell. Why would anyone run for the US Presidency shrouded in such secrecy? Most obvious way to know someone is keeping a secret is for that someone to behave secretively when confronted with the obvious. This business of; "I'll reveal that after I'm President" won't cut the mustard with most people. His behavior gives cause and evidence that there is much wrong in His past. He believes, if He reveals it He's done. He believes, if He presents a coverup, it would yet be revealing enough to tell more than an up front admission. What to do? What to do? Clearly, Romney has adopted the "Rovian" campaign approach. Deflect, lie, and speak in explanations of sputterous scatter. They believe the majority of the American electorate doesn't have much sense anyway, and will settle for even less, claiming clear and glorious coherency of His innocence, honest resolve, and philanthropic intent. The real question now becomes; are Rove and Romney indeed right? For the sake of so many who suffer from, and the many who are overcome by, the lack of common necessities, inflicted upon them by an uncaring and foolish republican party, and literally, for the sake and continuation of the Republic, let us resolve to make liars of both these political outliers.

Maybe there's a trust issue. When someone writes not one but two auto-biographies you think they are relating actual events as they happened. It's disconcerting to find out later that it's not so much an accurate historical record but more a "Hallmark" made for TV story where events and statements have been changed to fit a narrative and characters as described may not exist but are a composites to expedite the story line.

I do read, and I know that the great economy under Bill Clinton was also aided by a dot com bubble. I know that the Bush economy was built on a Federal Deficit (Keynesian in nature) and by a housing bubble. I know that the current economy is limping along and the Administration is clueless on how to fix it.

I'm an equal opportunity detractor. The idea that this has been caused simply by "right wing policies" is ludicrous. It's like saying only one side was to blame for the housing bubble when I could name you 10 politicians of both parties, including the current President, who had the fingers in the cookie jar and helped keep the plates spinning. How about the Clinton Administration agreeing to NAFTA and to China's admission to the WTO. Think that had anything to do with middle class wages stagnating? In fact I'm still waiting on Obama's re-negotiation of NAFTA, or have we forgotten that?

It's time for the President to put his man pants on and take some responsibility for this economy.

2. Is Obama responsible for debt crisis in Europe, the economic slowdown in China, or the recession in Britain, a nation under conservative leadership?

3. What are those words I attributed to in block quotes you that you say weren't yours?

Let's hear what Buffet has to say:

Warren Buffett: US Economic Growth Slowing, Europe Slipping 'Pretty Fast'

Posted By: Alex Crippen | Executive Producer

cnbc.com

| 12 Jul 2012 | 07:38 AM ET

Warren Buffett has changed his view on the U.S. economy.

In a live CNBC interview from Sun Valley with Becky Quick of "Squawk Box," Buffett says the general economy's growth has "tempered down" so that it is now "more or less flat."

He does, however, see a "noticeable" pickup for residential housing from a "very low base" that "doesn't amount to a whole lot yet, but it's getting better."

For months, Buffett had been seeing general U.S. economic growth held back by a weak residential housing market.

Buffett also says things are beginning to "slip pretty fast" in Europe, especially over the past six weeks. He's confident "they'll get it worked out" by ten years from now, but right now there's no obvious answer. A big part of the problem: it's not clear who is in charge, if anyone, and Europe doesn't have its own "printing press."

Buffett says he "doesn't know" if the euro will still be a currency ten years from now. He thinks the euro zone can't exist as "originally designed."

Despite the slowdown, Buffett says the U.S. economy is still doing better than "virtually any other big economy" around the world.

He says that "to some extent," he is in a wait and see pattern on where the economy will going.

Asked about the scandal surrounding interest rate manipulation by Barclay's and other banks, Buffett called it a "big deal" and "can of worms" that "shakes your faith in certain institutions."

He believes Barclays CEO Bob Diamond had no choice except to resign.

Buffett did endorse JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, calling him "one of the best bankers in the world" who "understands banking and understands risk."

It seems he thinks despite our woes, we still are doing better than virtually any other economy in the world.

Maybe there's a trust issue. When someone writes not one but two auto-biographies you think they are relating actual events as they happened.

It's only disconcerting to those who desperately need a reason to be disconcerted now that the birther nonsense has been debunked. Obama explicitly stated what he was doing at the beginning of his book Dreams from My Father.

What might be more disconcerting, especially to people in Great Britain, our most important ally, is that Mitt Romney trashed their country in his No Apologies book as a "second tier nation" that doesn't produce much that other countries want to buy. Mitt owes THEM an apologies. Of course, they're not likely to get one because jerks never apologize to people they've insulted, as the title of the book implies.

rockton Barlow

That's a new one Houston. Instead of Bush, the Tea Party, Republicans in the house, the weather, the tsunami, 1%er's, our economy now sucks according to Houston because of the whole WORLD!

That's an old one, Barlow. Blaming Obama for things that are obviously beyond his control. And the U.S. economy is doing much better than European countries with conservative austerity policies. Great Britain under Tory leadership is in recession and the U.S. is not. And Europeans are now socking their money away in the U.S. even though they get effectively negative interest rates because they have a lot more confidence the U.S. economy under Obama than they do in their own. But of course, the Obama haters wont' give him any credit for that, even though most economists credit him for the relative stability of the U.S. economy.

Alan,

In the words of the late Gary Coleman, "What'choo talkin' bout Willis?"

What in the hell ARE you talking about?

To quote another TV icon, the late Jack Webb, "Just the facts ma'am".

The facts just don't support the fiction being spouted by the right. Bush 43 nearly crashed the world's economy by very nearly crashing our own economy. That's a fact. Bush 43, when he finally realized what he had done instituted TARP to pump cash into the economy and try to prevent the crash. It was a good idea but too little too late. That's a fact. President Obama inherited the financial crisis and as a stop-gap he continued Bush 43's TARP and added to it thereby saving the auto industry and countless millions of jobs. That's a fact. Europe was already on the brink of disaster and the damage done by Bush 43's mishandling of the US economy pushed them over the edge which in turn caused our economy to slow down. That's another fact.

When you add in the political games being played in Washington which caused the nation's credit rating to be downgraded and Mitch "I'll do everything in my power to make Obama a one-term President" McConnell's inability to work and play well with others. Yet one more fact. Then you have the current economic stagnation that is keeping the unemployment rate so high and the economy on life support.

None of that is the President's fault. Much of it could have been avoided and the economy in full recovery if the Republicans would stop playing political games in Washington. That is also a fact.

But I fully agree, it's hard for Joe and Joleen Sixpack to understand all that. They want ONE PERSON to blame and the real culprit, Bush 43, is a distant, bad memory.

Now, if you stir in just a pinch of racism, you have our current political situation.

It's a fact, Jack.

The GOP had their chance. Bush 43 had two full terms and through most of that time, thanks to the tragedy of 911, he got a pass from the news media and the support of the American people. That's a fact. Our trust was misplaced. He had a personal agenda and he darn near bankrupted the country pursuing that agenda. Yet another unfortunate fact.

That's why we're not willing to give the GOP one more chance at bat. They struck out. They damned near caused a world-wide depression. President Obama did the UNPOLITICAL THING and stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park. He stopped the economic crash and put us on the road to recovery. But the GOP has been throwing up speed bumps all along the way.

And who suffers. The American people suffer. It's tragic and in my opinion it's treason.

Just the facts ma'am, just the facts.

Alan you always give so much flak to the left, but do not give the right their fair share as well. Even though the democrats did at times have signficant control, I would have to contend that the majority of our economic policy was based off of "conservative" principles. Well, besides spending, but ALL politicians spend.

Trickle down economics does not work is the conclusion we have noe come to. Yes it does create wealth but not for enough people to drive a nation's economy.

To imply Keynesian economics has failed is not fair. It has not really been applied. Yes we have tried spending and lowering interest rates to fight recession, but politicians will not do the opposite (decrease spending) during economic expansion.

I see Brockton is AGAIN posting his list of problems the country is facing because of the Republican obstructionists. Too bad he's not truthful about any of it.

Mitt Romney went overseas to show his foreign credentials and has become the laughingstock of the world. Eighty thousand people gathered to hear the mayor call him "someone named Mitt Romney" then went on to bash him. All of the world is watching and now thinks about as much of the Republican party as most on this site do.

The reason this is important is that it made headlines in a country which has usually been our strong ally - yet Mitt insults them first words out of his mouth. He looks and acts like the arrogant a** we've all seen over and over again.

My guess is his visit to the Olympics will be far worse but we'll see. He certainly won't be greeted warmly.

This sets the tone for the rest of his trip. Each country has already seen him as a buffoon in London and will not be expecting anything more. He has hurt any chance at credibility he might have had. And, he has made the US look bad by being an absolute idiot.

Again, THIS is the best the GOP has. Pathetic.

BTW I would like you to go back to any and all of my comments and show where I was guilty of any of the things that you claim "I" wanted in your Post 1.29.

Seems you throw the word "you" around rather easily.

when I cut and paste somethinglike an interview, it is to use it to make a point, prove a fact, etc. Maybe when you post something, the content is supposed to be irrelavant to what you are trying to imply, I don't know. All I can assume from your post is that you were referencing to Brokaw claim's that he didn't know anything about Obama in 2008, and I can only assume that your intent was to discredit left's claim about not knowing anything about Romney.

You can correct me if your intent was to post some random conversation that had no meaning or relevance whatsoever to what you were trying to imply or suggest but then you need to explain what hypocrisy you were trying so hard to prove.

Europe was already on the brink of disaster and the damage done by Bush 43's mishandling of the US economy pushed them over the edge which in turn caused our economy to slow down. That's another fact.

What Bush policy initiated the crash? What regulation did he repeal or not enforce that caused a small unit of AIG, in London, to amass a huge amount of risk that created a systemic failure? What encouragement did he give to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy up huge amounts of sub-prime mortgages? Do the House and Senate Finance committees chaired by Chris Dodds and Barney frank bear any responsibility for their lack of oversight during the run up to the crash? What steps could his Administration taken to stem the flow of cheap money that funded the housing bubble? The fed, which is supposedly independent, is responsible for setting the interest rates on which mortgages are based, what was their responsibility during the sub-prime build up? Should Chairman Bernanke bear any of the responsibility for the cheap money that fueled the over-leveraging of the individual and enterprises? Finally, what responsibility does the individual have when they borrow more than they can possibly repay but decide to gamble on the asset they buy appreciating?

As I said there are so many parties that had their finger in the pie, so many incentives to do the wrong thing, the blame can spread over everybody....and this is not an attempt to vindicate Bush.

None of that is the President's fault. Much of it could have been avoided and the economy in full recovery if the Republicans would stop playing political games in Washington. That is also a fact.

If that is the truth then why does the President also blame the Tsunami, or the Europeans or maybe Chins slowing down. This is where I lose it with the President's supporters. basically their position is, he is responsible for all the good things that have happened but not the bad, that's still Bush's fault. This President appointed Tim Geinther. he had a hand in the financial crisis, the Libor scandal and the lack of conditions for TARP money....he foamed the runway for the banks. That is the President''s responsibility.

Alan you always give so much flak to the left, but do not give the right their fair share as well. To imply Keynesian economics has failed is not fair. It has not really been applied. Yes we have tried spending and lowering interest rates to fight recession, but politicians will not do the opposite (decrease spending) during economic expansion.

I give more flak to the left because most posters on this board only post one side of the story.

Trickle down may not work but no one has convinced me that the opposite is true either. It is a judgement as to what the "right" rate and type of tax should be. All I want to see is an attempt to pay for what we spend.

Trickle down has been discredited but so has Keynesian theory. By any measure Bush ran 8 years of deficit spending. It may have been tax cuts and guns not butter (although we did have Medicare-D), but it was Keynesian. This Administration has put Keynes of steroids. 8% - 10% of GDP deficit spending every year so far. The Fed has added over $3T to the money supply. How much more do want to see, how much more can we take, before the economy has self-sustaining economic growth? And sad part is that even if the economy does start to grow there are not enough politicians who will cut spending when times are good.

@Houston #1.65,

Keep up the distortions, you are proving to be quite adept with that !

First, Your question on do I approve of 100 round ammo clips has the further, unproven caveat assigned by you "..... whose only purpose is ..." is kind of like the old "wife beater" question. (Are you still beating your wife ?) It has a built-in assumption by you that you totally fail to prove. It is not a question where any thinking individual can give a simple "yes" or "no" answer to. You, however, take your assumption as "FACT" which it is not. Get me a statement from the manufacturer(s) of said clips that the sole purpose of these clips is to commit mass murder, then I will agree with you.

Second, this is another attempted distortion by you ! Bravo !! You start wandering to the economic condition of the world and relate it DIRECTLY to the poor GDP report of the U.S., then you asked me if Obama was responsible for all the financial issues of the world .... an asinine question. Obama is responsible to a very large degree for the stalling economy here in the U.S. Your attempts to change the focus of the U.S> GDP report are laughable.

Third, You did indeed try to put YOUR words in my mouth yesterday and you bobbed and weaved like a boxer in the ring trying to dodge the truth. In #23.6 you said: "What YOU are saying is that people should be able to by (buy) 100 round clips whose only purpose is to murder large numbers of people quickly".

I challenged you to prove where I said that and you have been doing the crawdad move ever since. Deny your own words if it makes you feel better ..... or maybe you can come back and try to reinvent the meaning like Obama does at times.

It is a judgement as to what the "right" rate and type of tax should be. All I want to see is an attempt to pay for what we spend.

What I do agree with is that taxes are raised but spending is never cut. That is why these deals always fall apart. Even now as the President advocates raising taxes on the top earners he caveats it with "We need this to reduce the deficit"....this I agree with..."and to make investments in education and infrastructure". So basically he wants to spend more when we are already spend 1.3T more than we take in. Maybe we could pin him down on how much of the tax increase will actually go to deficit reduction in the first year...not in 2017.

First, Your question on do I approve of 100 round ammo clips has the further, unproven caveat assigned by you "..... whose only purpose is for mass MURDER" is kind of like the old "wife beater" question.

OK. Here's another question you'll worm your way out of answering: If not for mass murder, what are 100-round ammunition clips good for? Self-defense in case there's a Zombie Apocalypse? You've failed to point out any reasonable use other than murder for these clips because there is none. The Houston Chronicle reported today that national police organizations are once again calling for a ban on these clips, but what do they know compared to some clown yammering about how he's been misquoted on the Internet?

Obama is responsible to a very large degree for the stalling economy here in the U.S. Your attempts to change the focus of the U.S> GDP report are laughable.

Once again, who are we to believe? The economists, or a clown like you posting your unfounded and irrational opinions on the Internet? Decisions, decisions.

I wasn't attributing any words to you. I was not quoting you. Unless you're a complete idiot, you know that "What you are saying" is just a figure of speech that to point out the inescapable facts associated with an assertion.

You claim that no further gun laws are needed, which is EXACTLY equivalent to saying that it's OK for people to buy 100-round clips whose only purpose is to murder large number of people quickly because that's what anyone can buy UNDER CURRENT LAW. And that's what you are saying even though you don't like the stupidity of your claims is made plain when stripped of the nonsense about "the hearts of men" making additional laws useless.

And rather than trying to twist my words, please give us another use for these clips. Rapidly shooting tin cans off a fence doesn't count as a "use".

I agree whole-heartedly with one exception. Bush 43 was absolutely clueless and did whatever Darth Vader Cheney told him to do. It was DICK "deficits don't matter" Cheney's personal agenda that sent our economy off the cliff. "Sign here, Mr. President. No, Mr. President, it's not important that you read it. Just sign."

Unfortunately, the rubberband man wants to be President so badly that a repeat performance of Bush 43 is inevitable if the evil empire regains control of the Executive Branch. Romney has the exact same cast of advisers that ran Bush 43's presidency and has already sucked up to Darth Vader himself. Fool's Gold

newday:

Only we political junkies are actually paying a great deal of attention to the race right now, the election won't actually begin for most of the electorate until after the Repulican convention. It wil be at this point that America gets to know Mitt Romney better. Whether they decide they like him remains to be seen.

I wouldn't say that only political junkies are paying attention right now and that the remaining electorate will suddenly start to pay attention at Tampa; I think that is a gross miscalculation on Rmoney's part.

Instead, I would say that 45% of Americans have already decided that they are either for/against Obama, and that very, very little is going to happen between now-and-then that will change their minds. Obama could switch political parties and pass every Republican bill into law, and republicans will still vote for Rmoney.

However the other 10%, the largely undecided, do pay attention and are informed, and although they are not as swayed by the day-to-day happenings of the campaign, they will be focused on the aggregation of everything that happens during the campaign, including: international gaffes, misleading/hiding of informaiton, vp pick, convention, debates, and most importantly Rmoney's tone and message.

If he can frame a positive message and a clear direction of where he wants to take this country, then he has a chance to beat Obama. But if all he does is criticize others, including London's Olympic preparedness, then I don't think he has a snowball's chance.

Frankly, all we have heard from Rmoney is, "Our president is no good, I can do better" without any plans or specifics, which is a lot like saying to America, "Just trust me". And that is a losing proposition every time.

    Alan,NJ

Another thing to add that Democrats did wrong was the weakening and repealing of the Glass Steagal Act in the late 1990's. Obviously it was replealed by Clinton, but the Republican sponsors of the act were all Republicans - Gramhm, Leach - Republican Senators.

I agree there is blame to go around with the financial crisis. People got into houses they couldn't afford, they used Home equity like an ATM . The Democrats, thinking home ownership provided stability, pushed for more ownership in the 1990's and home ownership soared. Yes, during that time some people who couldn't sustain a house were allowed to buy them. However, you don't seem to point out that the merging of the commerical and investment banks funnelling money into risky bets were a big reason for the crash as well. You don't mention that the credit default swaps and bundled mortgages sold and repackaged to overleveraged banks, with limited liquidity, had a hand to play.

You don't mention that the democrats although they made the mistakes of letting regulations lapse or weaken have tried to fix things. The GOP on the other hand scream for less regulations, when the weakened regulations fail the system the GOP cry "*&#%, Democrats didn't have enough regulations in place."

Perhaps you could show balance in the things that conservatives do wrong as well? How would the conservative plan which "generally" calls for less regulations have helped avert the crash?

One can surely blame the Fed and Bernanke and the oversight of the "negligient" regulators but why not blame the banking/gamblers that screwed the system? Where is the personal responsibilites for those criminals who willing played the system and lost our money?

You ask why we as Democrats vote for Democrats if they act like Republicans? Not so much as a "campaigner" as you call liberals but as a person I ask the same question. Why vote for democrats who say the right things but often don't do enough to truly change the wrong or fix the problem. Well it is far better to vote Democratic and get some improvement in lieu of voting Republican and have the problems get worse and have the GOP cause additional ones as well.

    Alan NJ -- You said:

What I do agree with is that taxes are raised but spending is never cut

I couldn't get past that one statement. What's true is taxes have been cut and cut and spending continues on and on for things like the war Alan. When's the last time taxes were raised on the whole? Last I looked the Bush tax cuts are still in place. As for your gripe on spending, some things are worth spending on. Others are not. You say Obama has put Keynes on steroids yet everything Romney is calling for is Keynesian leaning as well. Is not boosting Defense spending Keynesian? It is you making various arguments and it's hard to keep track which side of the fence you're sitting on from one post to the next.

Here’s what you said to me the other day:

If you know anybody who has built their own business you would not try and make this argument. They make choices between work and family. Work and leisure. The majority of the time they choose work.

    I answered:

Years ago I had a small business. I understand what it takes to grow a business to make it successful.

As for my not making coherent arguments this week. What's true is I've lost patience and that's not helpful when one is trying to make a point.

That dig was at Republican policies in general. But if the shoe fits Alan, wear it proudly. Quit jumping the fence for sake of argument. It's so damn disingenuous.

Just about time for Mr. Obama to "SPIKE the football" concerning "THE HURT LOCKER" since he cannot discuss HIS economy.

Wait a minute, the CIA and DOD is in court over this issue.

I wonder how far up the "chain" this will go. Now who in the World would have released CLASSIFIED INFORMATION to Bollywood ?

The assistance to moviemakers has been roundly criticized by some Republican members of Congress. Rep. King Peter King of New York claimed that the White House gave the filmmakers access to top White House and Pentagon officials with knowledge of the bin Laden raid.

Trickle down may not work but no one has convinced me that the opposite is true either. It is a judgement as to what the "right" rate and type of tax should be. All I want to see is an attempt to pay for what we spend.

Technically, the problem with the "right tax rate" is that it always changes; the top tax rate was though to be most effective during the 1950s was 94% due to the economic prosperity of the time; in the Reagan days, it was thought to be 28%, thanks to the temporary economic expansion; in the Clinton era, it was thought to be 39.6% due to the temporary expansion period that ensued.

Actually, Keynesian economics has NOT been disproved. For Bush, his main stimulative program (the Bush tax cuts) had a negligible effect on the economy; in fact, it hurt small businesses by increasing interest rates. And as for the housing bubble, that was mostly caused by the conservative (not necessarily Republican) concept of deregulation, which allowed banks to chop up subprime mortgages and sell them as AAA assets, which were ironically rated by the same agencies that cut the U.S. credit rating. For the Federal Reserve, you must understand that we are in a liquidity trap, where banks don't use the extra money to give loans; they mostly use it fix their balance sheets (this is an unusual crisis, but not entirely uncommon; the same thing happen to Asia in the 1990s). Now, the Fed could do some "unconventional" measures, like buying up long-term bonds and private sector debt, pushing down the value of the dollar temporarily to improve the export sector, or increasing the inflationary target rate to around 4% (the rate that we had under Reagan). Unfortunately, this won't be done in part due to political pressure on both Chairman Bernanke and the Federal Reserve itself. As for the Obama administration, he didn't really go big on his stimulus measures. Had he gone big, like advocating a 10 year, $2 trillion program to fix our physical and electrical infrastructure paid for by a mixture of special taxes and negative-interest Treasury bills; stimulating the consumer base by exempting anyone making under a certain amount from the payroll tax for a few years (paid for by reforming Social Security itself in a broad entitlement reform package done later); or fixing the housing industry by writing off underwater mortgages or enabling underwater homeowners to refinance at historically low rates. The problem is that he faces political pressure and obstruction, mostly from the GOP. And as for the deficit, most of it is caused by lower revenues and higher spending on social safety nets, which isn't the most sustainable form of stimulus.

What I do agree with is that taxes are raised but spending is never cut. That is why these deals always fall apart.

Not really; Clinton raised taxes AND cut spending in the 1990s.

Well, I do understand your uncertainty, but I doubt that a significant amount of deficit savings would be spent immediately (political pressure would definitely reduce that possibility). Education spending would probably increase moderately, and other stimulus spending would probably be paid for separately (like Obama's Jobs Act) with a millionaire's tax or something like that. I would say that most of the deficit savings would go to deficit reduction, as I doubt that Obama would spend half of, say, $4 trillion in savings for immediate stimulus. The odds are just overwhelming. And let me point out that much of the $1.3 trillion is due to the lower revenues caused by the recession, while the rest is the increased spending on safety nets on top of the Bush tax cuts and the rest of Bush's fiscal policy.

Romney is a bumbling idiot. The people in England know this now and don't care much for Romney.

Here in America, all Romney's ads against President Obama are nothing more than taking any speech by Obama and leaving out words to change the meaning. Then the republicans act all appalled at what the president said.

I am hoping that the American people are not as stupid as the republicans think.

    More bad news for Obama and Company;

"The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Mitt Romney attracting 49% of the vote, while President Obama earns support from 44%."

Rasmussen was perhaps the most accurate major pollster in the 2004 and 2008 Presidential elections, missing the actual results by only about 1% each time.

According to that FARCE of a poll put out by NBC a few days ago? What a joke.

They included 52% more Democrats in their polling than Republicans, even though recent polls have them essentially equal in voters - one even has the Republicans slightly ahead of Democrats in political affiliation.

That ridiculous 'spiking' of the sample created as much as a 10% error in that poll in favor of Obama. Rasmussen, who polls 'Likely Voters' has Romney ahead by 5% now, and their track record is far better.

Actually, if you adjust for that polling error by NBC, the two polls are pretty much in agreement - Romney is ahead by 4% to 5% at this time.

Unfortunately, there is so much hate mongering on Democratic side of the isle, especially in the homosexual community, that we were bound to see Newton's third law come into play sooner or later and it is evidenced in some of these posts.

Obama's moral corruption is destined to create friction in the mind of any principled American. Interestingly, just when I personally thought Obama could not become any more morally corrupt, I recently learned he has made yet another Faustian deal with the devil. In this case, he has appointed the "King Of Gay Pornography" to his campaign finance committee, patted him on the back and told him to keep up the good work.

Barack Obama has made it clear he plans to continue with his war on America, the Catholic Church, US Christians, success, small business and American socioeconomic thinking! As a result, this is creating backlash, even from within his own party. Conservatives like to complain that Barack Obama is the most liberal president we've ever had, a closet Marxist who's determined to turn America into a socialist hell and that his despotic socialist agenda is the big lie of the twentieth century. Historians realize world history provides compelling proof that Obama's brand of socialism promised prosperity, equality, and security, but has only delivered poverty, misery, and tyranny. Historically, equality was achieved only in the sense that everyone was equal in his or her misery!

Those historic facts aside, Obama has crafted a shrewd campaign from a worldly perspective. Of note is the fact a significant portion of his campaign strategy was based on development of strategic alliances with many of the most godless and morally debased segments of our society in a thinly veiled effort to secure votes from those "the Obama administration believes" to be one dimensional, intellectually compromised, single issue constituencies. Many in this group had the misfortune of growing up in a broken home. The resulting dysfunction in these homes leads to emotional instability, mental illness and severe narcissism producing a common thread and liberal bias.

Beyond requisite intellectual acumen, our upcoming president MUST have a strong moral foundation and acute, politically savvy awareness the principles of prudent governance. Unfortunately for America, Obama's morally vapid strategic political alliances clearly disqualify him from this hallowed leadership role. For that reason, more and more moderate and conservative principled members of the democratic party believe they must abandon Obama's candidacy and their party line vote for the long term good of our country! Essentially, they believe it is best to retreat and return to fight another day when the Democratic party can submit a candidate who is willing to uphold traditional American values rather than to attempt to destroy the country from within.

Out of any 100 people there'll be more of one party than the other it doesn't mean they picked more democrats than republicans. Don't you people think?"

How simplistic things seem to some people. If they had 'accidentally' picked 52% more Republicans and the poll showed that Romney was ahead by 10%, do you really think msnbc would have printed a story?

Actually, the expert pollsters don't just accept the random results of a poll because a skewed sampling would produce unreliable numbers - they 'norm' them by making adjustments to reflect how many estimated Democrats and Republicans are in the general population. It's not hard to do, and it provides much more accurate results. For example, if they surveyed 1000 registered voters and found that 350 were Democrats and only 230 were Republicans, when population studies show that there should have been 350 Republicans in the sample, they would know that their polling would under-estimate Republians by about 12%, which is a HUGE error. Apparently, NBC didn't take this normal additional step. Since exit polls show consistently that Democrats and Republicans vote 'party line' 90% of the time, this 'sampling error' would amount to an overall error favoring Obama of close to 10%.

The NBC poll did have some interesting information however. Since the percentage of Republicans and Democrats are essentially equal, this election will be decided by the 'Independents' - so what does the NBC poll show in that regard? NBC's poll says that 42% of their respondents are 'Independent', and according to their final numbers, only 14% of them said they would vote for Obama, which means that 28% of them plan to vote for Romney. This is devastating news for Obama, because if the "Independent' voters actually do vote 2 to 1 for Romney, and the Republicans and Democrats vote their normal patterns, Romney could win by as much as 10% to 15%.

Or maybe he did, but people just weren't interested in becoming BFF's with him. Romney chose to make his "biography" from the very start the oft-repeated mantra that he had worked his entire life in the private business sector and was a successful businessman. He's spent years talking about how successful he is. Then all of a sudden the stories about Bain Capital and offshore bank accounts and a couple of Cadillacs for the wife and car elevators and $10,000 bets start coming out, and suddenly the biography doesn't look nearly as attractive any more, because most middle class people realize he's never once picked up a copy of THEIR biographies to try and understand where they came from.

I guess there's still time for him to write a new one. But if "How I Spent My Summer Vacation in London" is Chapter 1, he might want to have yet a third one waiting in the wings somewhere.

If anyone every deserved the title First Lady, it's Michelle. She's brilliant at framing her answers to promote children's fitness and putting the U.S. is the best possible light overseas. Of, course, she's experienced on the world stage, which Romney is not. But I think, if Barack has a cold on the night of the presidential debates, Michelle could step in, and she would mop the floor with Romney.

Hello Jack! Nice to see ya!

One thing the media is not focusing on is how the unpopular Republican governors will drag Romney down in November. Our Tea Party governor is now putting his big, fat thumb in Maine's educational system. He's stirring controversy, instead of getting people to work together (as usual.) I agree we need to improve our schools, but threatening to make public schools pay colleges if our HS graduates need remedial classes is sheer demagoguery.

I think the unpoularity of Gov. LePage is helping Obama and all the Democratic candidates, as well as Independent Angus King. President Obama is way ahead of Romney in polling here.

JoAnne, as always - a BRILLIANT post. You are so right that Romney has NEVER picked up a biography on the Middle Class. And apparently he really needs to work on:

              Making Friends and Influencing People

Because at this point he's a social moron that has NO HOPE of becoming POTUS. I wonder if he'll read THAT memo?

Alibis for Obama. Nothing is Obama's fault ... it must be George Bush who has been out of office for 3.5 years+.

Of course, the killing of Osama Bin Laden was not Obama's fault either ...... oops ! ....... that was a GOOD thing so we will claim that one !

Geez, when will you have the balls/guts/intestinal fortitude or just plain HONESTY to admit the Stimulus only caused a minor, artificial, temporary bump in the economy ..... and since then, Obama's failed policies have done NOTHING to reduce real unemployment ! Obamacare's impending impact is what has virtually ALL employers in a "hold pattern" of fear and uncertainty.

You guys are simply doing your best to excuse away his incompetence.

Oh bull@!$%#. "Supposed to be" and "can be" are two different terms. Obama is the leader in Washington; unfortunately, he is the leader of a bunch of elementary kids. For God's sake, the Republicans, at the same hour that Obama was inaugurated and called for compromise and bipartisanship, planned to use gridlock to get Obama out of office (unprecedented, especially when the country needed REAL leadership from BOTH parties). Obama has reached out to the other side so many times that even his own supporters are disappointed with him; the healthcare plan was a REPUBLICAN concept; the deficit reduction deal favored SPENDING CUTS by a 3:1 margin; he extended the Bush tax cuts FOR EVERYONE; he even accepted $2.2 trillion in spending cuts WITHOUT any increase in revenues. How the hell is that not reaching over the aisle??? The only reason why he isn't succeeding in reaching across is because the other side is pulling the rug out from under him every damn time.

Of course, at the time, Obama had a Democratic Senate AND House...... and Obama figured he could do any damn thing he wanted to do without a need for cooperation from the other side ... a ROOKIE mistake.

Actually, Obama COMPROMISED during that time; something that many liberals regard as a liberal mistake, considering that he should have known that the GOP wasn't willing to compromise with him...

Rom/Money Snickets: A Circumstance of Misunderestimable Performances

Alas, dear Reader, it is my dolorously woeful task to impart to you the tale of Rom/Money Snickets. The most disadvantaged youth of privilege to ever belong to a zanily grim cult of fastidious obsessions, Rom/Money was always victimized by his victimization of others, be they corporations you're squeezing the employment and pensions out of or an entire country's preparation for the singular sporting event of a generation that you're denigrating if not outright insulting, no one ever understood about Rom/Money's struggle with "you people".

Tragically, all of Rom/Money's life of miserable excrescent plentitude was haunted by "you people". "You people" hounded poor Rom/Money for accountability when he perpetrated his prep school haircutting, classmate tripping, full-on bullying frolics. Often being a cheerleader or manager of the hockey team was not enough to keep Rom/Money's flagging spirits from sagging. In these times, sliding down golf courses on ice blocks or impersonating police officers would have to be the method by which to muddle through. However, in the end, "you People" were a plague from which there could be no escape.

"You People" want to see the taxes.

"You People" want to hear the plans.

"You People" want to know "my postion".

              "You People" want to understand.

As one can see, Rom/Money's life is far from easy, and with his friends at the Teapublican Anarchy Brigade trying to destroy the economy to win him the Presidency, Rom/Money is beset on all sides by forces arrayed against his massive mendacity to bring a tumult of tendencious tomfoolery; tweaking twittering tongues attached to tenacious extirpaters of tomorrow's potential.

Will Rom/Money Snickets prevail against the malignant forces aligned against him? Alas, alack and well a day, probably not, because those forces live in the mirror. And no one has ever defeated the mirror.

              Cheers.

When you've grown up in a wealthy family and your first business venture is investing 10's of millions of his daddies money almost everyone he's dealt with since he's been a child has been people who work for him or his dad. He can't deal with addressing little people who aren't beholden to him. He's had great success is business but started with a fortune which allowed him to hire very smart people. As a venture capitalist he's never actually ran any working business he simply controlled them.

"the two teams are going into the locker room with Obama ahead of Romney ....... 49-43 if it's basketball"

According to that FARCE of a poll put out by NBC a few days ago? What a joke.

They included 52% more Democrats in their polling than Republicans, even though recent polls have them essentially equal in voters - two even have the Republicans slightly ahead of Democrats in political affiliation.

                  This is the Democratic version of bipartisanship;

Nancy Pelosi, when asked why she didn't feel the need to get any input from Republicans in writing the bills in the House - because "We Won".

Obama telling Republicans they "could come along for the ride, but they're going to have to sit at the back of the bus".

Of course they are certainly quick to blame the Republicans for how their failed leadership has turned out.

Romney has some really big negatives that the anti-Obama people are ignoring. I don't know of anyone who actually wants to vote for Romney, but there are a lot who want to vote against Obama, mostly because they believe things that aren't true.

But you can't ignore Mitt's basic flaws, like his rapid fire flip flops on virtually every issue, and his stunning inability to comprehend how offensive he is. He went through the primaries telling everyone how horrible Europe is, how their Nation Health is a failure, and then is surprised when Europeans hate him. I really think that salute to NHS during the Olympic ceremony was a slap at US conservatives. And don't forget that Mitt spent two years as a missionary telling Jews and Catholics that, sorry, much as God is a good God, they are all going to have to roast in Hell because they deserve it. And then Mitt's surprised that Obama leads 80-20 among Jewish voters.

Mitt was, as Santorum observed at one point, a horrible candidate. But what choice did GOP primary voters have? The GOP policies of hatred and illogic result in the only possible candidate being an offensive moron or an offensive serial flip-flopper.

truth4u - I can come up with lots of specifics regarding Mitt's flip flops, talking down european "socialism," and so on. These are well documented. But what is the basis for saying that Obama is "morally corrupt"? That he fails to share your hatred of gays? I happen to think that your real complaint is not against Obama, it is against America. America is different from you. Hating the things that are different from you is hating America.

The great and wonderful thing about our nation is that we have the freedom to be different, even if that means being gay or atheist or socialist or a union member or an intellectual or a public school teacher or a scientist who believes that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. Embrace diversity, lose the hate, and focus on who would be a better president - the one with proven success (bin Laden, end of recession, 6400 point increase in DJIA, 2 point decrease in unemployment, $600 billion decrease in deficit, Khaddafy, international respect, healthcare for millions who previously lacked it, etc.)

or the one who wants to go back to policies of proven failure?

                    There's no doubt that there is plenty of blame to go around, but since Congress sets the spending Budgets each year, which in turn determines the amount of new debt needed, let's look at the history over the last 31 years during which 94% of the total debt was incurred (1980 - 2011);

Debt increase when Democrats controlled Congress (12 years) = $7.601 Trillion.

Debt increase when Republicans controlled Congress (10 years) = $3.238 Trillion.

Debt increase when Congress was split (9 years) = $3.052 Trillion.

The 'Conventional Wisdom' that Democrats are 'big spenders' appears to be true.

Vice President Al Gore delivered a stinging rebuke of Bush's tax-cut plan during Election 2000. He called it a "redistribution of wealth" that amounted to ''class warfare" on behalf of billionaires. Do those two terms ring a bell with any of us today? Gore said Mr. Bush's proposed $1.3 trillion tax cut would be a disaster for the economy and potentially devastating for America's families and American businesses.''

Such eerily prophetic words were spoken without the knowledge that President Bush would also engage the nation in two very costly simultaneous wars. He "charged" all of the tremendous costs of those wars on our newly issued Chinese credit card and withheld them from our federal budget. Of course, our debt ceiling had to be raised several times with full republican congressional support. When Vice-President Cheney(the engineer of the coming train wreck) was asked about America's rapidly escalating debt, he smugly replied that, "Deficits don't matter." Nary a whimper of objection from any of the Republican leadership. The last two years of the Bush administration witnessed the "economic disaster" that Al Gore had foretold so many years before; the second worst economic collapse in American history that threatened to rival The Great Depression.

The American electorate soundly threw the Republican party out of power in election 2008. The Republican leadership instantly convened a secret meeting to devise ways to assure that then President-elect Obama would be a one term president. Republican leader Senator O'Connell later publicly stated that effort would be the Republican's number one goal. They were true to their word and obstructed every move our duly elected president presented in efforts to restore our economy ( no matter the damning consequences to the struggling American people).

Thankfully, President Obama's persistance (and a very brief time period of a fillibuster proof Democratic majority) allowed him to pull this nation back from the brink of financial ruin. It allowed him to start us on the path to prosperity.

The Republican leadership played on the frailty of human nature to demand instant gratification during the mid-term election campaigns. They excitedly pointed fingers of blame at President Obama and the democratic leadership for our slow, but steady progress. They fiercely denied that their own constant obstructionism was what kept us at a snails pace. They faithfully swore and promised that they would focus only on jobs, jobs, jobs if the American electorate would return them to power in Congress. We gave them the House of Representatives.

All of those promises were promptly abandoned on the morning of Wednesday, November 3, 2010. The day after the election. They later passed many bills promoting more tax cuts for the wealthy, removing environmental regulations on big business, prohibiting women's right to choose and denying gay rights. They stretched even the most vivid imaginations by calling all of these jobs bills. They wasted taxpayer dollars and valuable time in the House on futile bills while knowing the bills would never pass the Senate, much less reach the President's desk for the veto pen. More obstructionism to fulfil their only goal.

Merely weeks after being sworn into office, their new battle cry became horrors of the national debt and the deficit to deflect attention away from their empty promises of jobs, jobs, jobs. They brazenly used blackmail before raising the debt ceiling one more time as they had done many times for the previous Republican administration. Their actions caused the U.S. credit rating to be knocked down a notch because of the threat of not paying our bills. Once again, they busily point fingers and falsely accuse the President for our now damaged credit rating that will unneccessarily cost us billions we can ill afford in our hour of need. Get ready for round two of the same old b.s.

Romney is presented as their best hope to take back the presidency in election 2012 after a republican primary season that most resembled a comedic Broadway play. Mel Brooks or Woody Allen would have been proud to produce such an entertaining show. Yes, the same Romney that was yanked off the stage as the 2008 vice presidential nominee for.......wait for it...........Sara Palin! Yes, the same Romney that is now "severely conservative" and against many of the policies he often championed in the past. The Romney that surrounds himself with leftovers from the disastrous Bush administration as his closest advisers. The Romney that embraces Dick Cheney and promises that the same old Bush failed policies will now bring us prosperity.

Electing Romney as the next President of the United States would be the perfect ending for a typical off-beat Woody Allen comedy production. It would surely bring down the house. The Whitehouse, the House of Representatives and the house of cards now called the Republican party. It would be hilarious if it weren't so very serious. Let's all settle down and not do this under any circumstances.

Amazing, isn't it? Romney, the Mormon Cultist with his Magic Underwear, is running around overseas, stepping -- no, STOMPING -- all over his schwantz... Every time he opens his mouth, more and more Bushisms or Palinisms pour out.

All Barack has to do is all the Dems had to do last time with Palin: push the moron candidate to the nearest microphone. And wait.

Dont_carry_it_all "Roy, Roy, Roy...What am I going to do with you. Quit cherry picking. Fact is about 11 trillion of the debt can be traced to Republicans. Bob is correct. A President is the signer-in-chief."

I guess facts are 'inconvenient' to you.

First - 31 continuous years is not most people's idea of 'cherry picking'.

Second - While a President does have to sign the Budget (unless Congress fails to pass a Budget, like for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 - all under Democrats), he either must sign the Budget or veto it, which shuts the government down. When was the last time a President was willing to do that?

                      A prime example is fiscal 2009. Bush did his job by proposing a Budget for 2009, but Congress refused to consider it, and also refused to pass their own Budget - hoping that Obama would win and they could spend as much as they wanted. Bush had no alternative but to sign a Continuing Resolution to fund the government operations AT THE SAME LEVEL AS IN 2008. When Obama took over, he passed the 'Stimulus and Porkulus' bills that greatly expanded spending for 2009 - and only then did Obama sign a Budget for the balance of the year in early March 2009. And yet some people still foolishly try to 'Blame Bush' for the huge increase in spending for fiscal 2009. Here is irrefutable proof of what happened under Bush;

                        • In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
                        • Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. Read the CBO’s latest budget outlook.

However, you don’t get to have it both ways. Credit whom you will, but if you are truly interested in a fair analysis of the Obama years to date—at least when it comes to spending—you’re going to have to acknowledge that under the Obama watch, even President Reagan would have to give our current president a thumbs up when it comes to his record for stretching a dollar."

Some 2 million expected added to the unemployed because of budget constraints, mandated by the Conservative Republicans in their negotiations during the debt-ceiling fiasco, and "deficit hawks" who talk a great story but in fact know they will get their's.

Bob-1920561 "Roy read this on the Federal Budget and Debt.....your buddy Reagan increased the rate of deficit 189%,,,,"

Percentages can be manipulated to provide all kinds of misleading information. For example, if I have $100 in debt and increase it to $300, that's a 200% increase, but it's still only $200 more.

Reagan's biggest increase in spending was in 1985, when federal spending increased by $94 Billion.

Obama increased spending in 2009 by $535 Billion (an increase of 18%) - the biggest increase in history by far - thanks to the 'Stimulus' and 'Porkulus' bills.

                        And I must admit that I haven't the faintest idea what an 'increased rate of deficit' means, but if you want to look at actual Deficits by President, here they are;

Reagan (1981-1988) = $1.339 Trillion over 8 years, or $167 Billion per year.

                        Bush 1 (1989-1992) = $933 Billion over 4 years, or $233 Billion per year.

Clinton (1993-2000) = $320 Billion over 8 years, or $40 Billion per year.

Bush 2 (2001-2008) = $2.006 Trillion over 8 years, or $251 Billion per year. This included all of the cost of the wars.

Obama (2009-2012p) = $5.333 Trillion (Proj) over his first 4 years, or $1,333 Billion per year. That's $4.6 Trillion more than Bush spent in his first 4 years.

                        Here's the official government link to Obama's White House - not some biased site - See Table 1.3;

Of course you don't use inflation adjusted dollars in your comments...... I use rates of increase or decrease, percentage that Federal Budget increased or decreased. Come on Roy,(supposed M.A. in finance) tell the truth. You deplore the buying power of the American dollar today as opposed to the 1960's, yet you use gross#'s of dollars to prove nothing.

Again you claim, Democratic lead Congress increased the budget, "

Debt increase when Democrats controlled Congress (12 years) = $7.601 Trillion.

Debt increase when Republicans controlled Congress (10 years) = $3.238 Trillion.

Debt increase when Congress was split (9 years) = $3.052 Trillion.", now where is your facts or attached links?

Roy, you divert and can't discuss your way out of a paper bag.....LOL. From President to Congress, now back to President.

Look at the graphs provided, and correlate who held Congress in a majority and filibuster prove session and raised the RATE of Federal Spending......... We are not dummy's and know each years Federal Budget has to account for ALL prior Laws that have to be appropriated with money. To think that one Congress will not inherit the work of the prior is absurd, and political hacking. You appear to be very good at that.

The general economy of the nation has nothing to do with the budget in your thinking. And I suppose the economy was great in 2009. Give us a break on your lack of understanding of the social implications of the Federal Budget.

Have fun in the 60's before we were removed from backing our dollar with gold, and became a sovereign monetary system, that can not be manipulated by a commodity possible held by those who do not favor our way of life.

Again you FAIL to relate facts or stats in a complete basis, but as a political hack bent on one thing,,,,Repuglican victory at any cost.

And soon the Congress has to debate the defense/social budget for the coming year, because the current law will account for some 2 million less jobs, because of budgetary constraint, fostered by the Repuglican House,,,,,,,,,,,http://money.msn.com/business-news/article.aspx?feed=AP&date=20120717&id=15336613,,,,,,,, any idea how that happened other than gross negligence on the Democratic Party?

You're correct in writing that Romney refuses to release his tax returns. He keeps saying that releasing two returns is adequate. If only he would do that! To date we have an incomplete 2010 return, and a vague promise to release his 2011 in October, if his amended return has been filed by then.

Missing from his 2010 report is an attachment called FBAR (Foreign Bank Assessment Report), which is required when a filer has foreign bank holdings. Romney's FBAR hasn't been included with his released 2010 return.

This morning I heard an analysis of the tax increases both Obama and Romney will experience if the Bush tax cuts on those making over $250,000 expire. The Obamas, with $500,000 income, would have about $20,000 tax increase. Romneys, with $20 million income, would have about $1 million tax increase. Poor Mitt! No wonder he's against any tax increase! How could he muddle through life with a measly $19 million next year?

                          Our “Anglo Saxon heritage”? Really?

Romney advisor's gaffe in Britain isn't just offensive to minorities -- it leaves out most white Americans too

By Joan Walsh Joan Walsh is Salon's editor at large.

Oh Mitt Romney. You’re a terrible person to lead this rapidly racially mixing country. Yet the white folks seem to like you. But what if they’re not “Anglo Saxon?”

On the eve of Romney’s visit to Old Europe, an adviser helpfully told the Telegraph that the presumptive GOP nominee (I always say “presumptive,” he’s so gaffe-tastic, anything could happen between here and Tampa) would make a better president than Barack Obama because:

We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special. The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.

The adviser also shared that Romney is “better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Obama.

Yeah, he’s probably swiping at Obama’s alleged “Kenyan anti-colonial mindset” there, a la Newt Gingrich, referring to the president’s Kenyan father, who he never knew. Basically the Romney folks are reminding us again that the president is, well, yes, black. It’s idiotically racist.

What about other Americans who obviously aren’t Anglo Saxon? Latinos, Asians, Native Americans? Well, like African Americans, they’re not a huge Romney demographic. So no problem there.

But I hope that Romney quote gets a lot of play among Irish Catholics. We are not Anglo Saxon, as we were reminded when John F. Kennedy ran for president. Unfortunately, though, a lot of us forgot our roots and joined Romney’s Republican Party.

But the Irish aren’t alone: The American identity of most “white” immigrant groups — especially Jews, Italians, Eastern and Southern Europeans – was forged in opposition to the supposed Anglo Saxon ideal. There are British people who don’t consider themselves Anglo Saxon, either. That Romney adviser team is super-talented. When they’re not handing the media “Etch a Sketch” imagery, or promoting “self-made businessmen” who got a major (and easily traceable) hand from government, they’re slurring most of the American electorate.

By the way, I’ve always wondered why Gingrich’s attack on Obama’s supposed “anti-colonial mindset” was supposed to be a slur. OK, let’s forget it was a lie, based on Obama’s non-existent relationship to his Kenyan father: Aren’t we all anti-colonialist? What about the Founders, whom right-wing Tea Party crackpots supposedly revere? Weren’t they the ultimate anti-colonialists?

And then we have my people: Lots of Irish Catholics are Republican now. As Romney honors our “Anglo Saxon heritage,” I hope they remember their heritage, too. I hate tribalism, and I’m not trying to stir up dated Irish-British animosity. The Romney team is.

Romney isn’t fit to be president of the world’s most diverse country. Why is this race close?

this was gaffe number one at the start of this trip, and it hasn't got any better. Do we really want this insensitive individual as our President?

Watching Romney's surrogates and VP auditioners, who previously were touting the overseas trip as proof that Mitt is Presidential, spin the foreign trip to prove his bonefides turned disasterous nightmare into it doesn't matter, it's all about the economy is entertaining. Caught a bit of Michael Steele who previously said Romney should release his tax returns, on Morning Joe today flip flop into full defend Romney mode, and adopt the no one's business and it's an assault on rich people tactics.

You left out "Bring the bust of Winston Churchill back to the Oval Office" - without being aware that it was only ever a very gracious LOAN - to President Bush, after the 9/11 attacks - and was always intended to go back to the British. But hey, that's okay - if Romney wants it back, Romney will just take it back. He talks as if it's sitting up in the White House attic, collecting dust. Last I heard, it was at the British Embassy. Don't you think they should have some say as to whether they choose to LOAN it to us a while longer?

Mr. Romney admitted they were things in his tax returns that could be turned around and used against him. My question is what are they? Let us voters make that choice.

I doubt seriously the average voter understands the complexities of tax laws as they exist in the U.S. today. Without a proper knowledge of the laws, understanding and judgment thereupon would be highly speculative.

Tax laws have been the "political football" of politicians for many decades, under many Democratic and Republican administrations. The fact that it takes CPA's and Tax Attorneys to understand some of the more difficult provisions is a direct result of the politics involved over all those years. The "Alt-Min tax is but one example. Does anyone know what ACE depreciation means ?

Hell, sometimes today you could take a taxpayer's return to different CPA's and get different results. What our government needs to do is stop the constant political "F_cking" with the tax laws with every new administration and get the help of the AICPA with cleaning up and removing the inconsistencies.

ksw62118: You might ask yourself why anyone at Bain would contribute to Obama's campaign fund? Could it be because they know Romney better than you !!! Could it be because they are not convinced Romney will win and they are being caucious by contributing to both sides !!!

You are trying to make something out of nothing. It's common practice for companies to contribute everywhere they see potential winners so the winner will view them in a positive light.

Try something else - this tactic will never fly.

jim - I agree - the House needs to introduce a tax reform bill. The last meaningful one by either party was during the Reagan term - or did I miss something.

It has to be the House because anything Obama does is a 'bad thing', even if the repubs originally thought of it. And Obama should threaten to veto it or it will go nowhere. Or it will morph into the Ryan bill.

Meaningful tax reform needs to be structured into a non-political environment to include input from real, everyday preparers. Major changes are not wise while our economy is fragile and uncertain. A decrease in C-corporation tax rates could help us restore our world competetiveness. Right now, our C-corp rates are the highest in the world and businesses are leaving for better tax environments. C-corp tax rates for true manufacturing companies need to be substantially reduced to encourage manufacturing back into the U.S. economy.

"Loopholes" seems to be a universally accepted concept, yet few can seem to give more than one or two "loopholes" for removal consideration. The alt-min tax is a beast, and needs to be re-vamped.

Obama threatening to "veto" the bill if not to his liking simply would reinstate the political process and further make tax law complex. That is not what we need.

Well, decreasing the marginal tax rate won't really do much to bring companies back to America; most corporate effective tax rates are around 25%, near the international average (although companies over there might have different effective rates). I would say focus less on tax policy and aim more for trade policy, like establishing protective tariffs to protect certain industries from dumping and other foreign trade policies (like many countries have). We cannot devote ourselves to free trade while the rest of world stays protectionist. We have to play ball with them, and my advice is to protect key manufacturing industries (aircraft, cars, and hopefully microchips and semiconductors, if that is possible), and increase R&D spending in general. But we must also play hardball with other nations on trade, telling them that we will kick their ass at their own protectionist game if they don't open up. I also propose a tariff that makes up for the difference in labor costs here and abroad, so that quality and productivity will be the deciding factor, not cost.

"Loopholes" seems to be a universally accepted concept, yet few can seem to give more than one or two "loopholes" for removal consideration. The alt-min tax is a beast, and needs to be re-vamped.

Revamped, probably. Repealed, along with the estate tax under Romney, no way in hell.

Obama threatening to "veto" the bill if not to his liking simply would reinstate the political process and further make tax law complex. That is not what we need.

If you're talking about the Bush tax cuts, he is finally telling the GOP to either compromise or go @!$%# themselves. It's about damn time for the GOP to compromise; if they do, good for the country; if not, sucks for them. And by the way, this is just the Republican policy played against them. As they old saying goes, what comes around goes around.

Specifically to the incidents, yes, it's much ado about nothing. But from the 50,000 foot view it says something larger about Mitt Romney. One, the political gaffes are important. Diplomacy is not simple. A skillful practitioner of diplomacy knows how little errors in communication can spoil an entire round of negotiations or relationships. Fortunately this happened in the UK, with a friendly. Missteps in more tenuous situations can be disastrous.

Second, I'm concerned about Romney's position regarding his wife and the Olympics. What kind of person doesn't want to see his family's entry in the Olympics? I know this guy is a good father and a good husband overall, but is he so afraid of being seen as supporting a "rich guy" sports like dressage, that he can't stand up for the core of his family? I'm reading way too much into this, but I don't like a guy who so quickly abandons a core part of his soul because he's afraid of what a segment of people will think.

                          Just my $.02

Job1- Why doesn't the public know Obama better? He sealed his college records, including the applications for admissions and financial aid. Why? Did he apply as a foreign student? I take him at his word that he was born in Hawaii, but did he apply as, and accept, admissions and aid as a foreign student? It appears that President Obama is hiding things too. And those things would be very concerning to me.

By the way: after the admissions process, very large trucks come with shredders and destroy all applications.

I take it as an actual fact that Obama born in Hawaii. It’s all been certified. (See additional below link)

When all of the Presidents start showing their college transcripts, then yes I will be for such disclosure. However, don't try to make the first Black President in history show his.

I don't blame him for not showing transcripts because he most likely took a course or two that the half-wit Neo-Nut Right Wing Drones would go crazy over and claim the President is a radical.

Obama released 12 years of tax returns and why not Romney? Where there some years in which Romney didn't pay any taxes due to write offs?

Come on Willard is hiding something and we the American People are giving him the job interview in which he better start answering questions.

We also have to remember the IRS doesn't always catch information they should.

So, the bottom line is Willard had better start giving us the truth and stop the lies.

reader - EVERYONE'S college records are sealed - even yours - if you have any.

                              From Outside the Beltway:

The common response to the points I’m raising here usually boils down to mentioning the fact that The New Yorker managed to get its hands on George W. Bush’s Yale transcripts during the 2000 campaign. They didn’t get them from the Bush campaign and, technically, whoever released them was violating Federal laws regarding the privacy of education records. Several months later, The Washington Post managed to get its hands on Al Gore’s education records, again without the consent of the campaign and in apparent violation of Federal law.

President Obama is sealing No records that have been public for any other President so stop posting the Republican lie. It just makes you look totally ignorant.

He NEVER applied for student aid as a foreign student - that has been debunked over and over at SNOPES.

If any of these things HONESTLY bothered you, you could have looked them up. But, that would have meant you'd then have to tell the truth - or would you bother?

I have no problem with skin color and neither should Job, but if he uses it as an issue then he is a racist.... It only goes to show that people like Job have to use the issue of race instead of defending or criticizing somoene on their merits.

OK, JK, why don't you tell us then, why is it that President Obama is the only President whose college applications have ever been an issue? Why Obama, and no one else who has ever run for or been President?

fielden - it's all the far right has to go after. He's an intelligent and articulate man and they just hate that. He's released his taxes - I believe 5 years of them. He graduated from Harvard and headed Harvard Law Review - obviously a dummy! He's paid back his student loans - in full.

He's an honorable man who is hiding nothing and they can't come up with a comparable candidate so they go after him.

                              Pathetic really but not unexpected.

I could care less about either issue...Romney's tax returns or Obama's college transcripts. It's the scrutiny that both sides of the political spectrum place on the others that is silly. I mean *IF* Romney released his tax returns, would that make you vote for him? So why bother? You choose to believe Obama for what he is and that makes you happy, others believe Romney for what he is and that makes them happy.

                              Jody,

I could care less where Obama makes his money from...it's his money just as I could care less where Romney makes his money. As long as both pass the IRS and neither have committed a crime, I could care less.

JK1963 - Romney's taxes are a source of concern. We have every right to know as much about him as we have about every other candidate - what's the problem with that? Why are you giving him a pass? Is it that you KNOW he's probably a little less honest than he tries to make people think?
And, why are more and more Republicans in leadership positions urging him to release them? That should bother anyone.

I want to know what he's hiding. I find it less than funny that McCain decided Palin was better qualified to be his VP than Romney. THAT alone would bother any sane person.

No, I won't vote for the empty suit and no integrity Romney. I'm surprised anyone with integrity would.

                              Seeking,

You live for the cheap shots. Simply because someone doesn't subscribe to YOUR way of thinking doesn't make them any less right or less important. People knew very little about Obama four years ago. All people knew that he gave good speeches, so gee, he must be a good President. That's ALL we knew.

There are plenty of people in this country with tons of integrity and intelligence that will vote for Romney. Since Obama is the incumbent he has to either run on his accomplishments or resort to negative ads.

For you, to insult others simply because they don't share your view of the world and politics is just childish.

I know a lot about Obama- his background and ideology and the same goes for Romney.

Biographies on both have been out for awhile and this is the problem.

Many voters do not take the responsibility of researching the candidates and that is why nobody knows much about them.

Relying on distorted information from biased sites or the media is not how you research- you have to physically go out in the market place to find non-biased and non-partisan information.

JK1963 - as opposed to your childish posts? My points are as valid as yours or moreso. And, most of us voted for Obama because he was the best candidate running. He actually KNEW we had economic problems. He DIDN'T pick an idiot for a running mate but a man who is respected for his foreign policy expertise - in spite of the occasional gaffe.

Obama is an intelligent man who has done a great deal of good during his first term and would have done better had he not been obstructed at every turn by the GOP who knew he is more than capable - and scared to death of the good he can do.

I will vote for Obama because he is heads above Mitt in intelligence, leadership and integrity - and he's not hiding his damned tax returns like a spoiled child.

It's pointless to hold a meaningful dialog with someone that continues over and over again with cheap shots and insults. Perhaps if you looked in a mirror once in awhile you might see someone that can't continue a conversation without an insult. I would actually dare you to post something without an insult but I know it would be a lost cause.

As for picking an "idiot", you could fill a whole blog full of "idiot" things Joe Biden has done and said over his political career, but instead you choose to insult someone from the other side of the political spectrum. If you have a problem with Romney, that is something you have to live with, but it would seem that alot of Americans have faith that someone besides Obama is much better for this country.

"And that's the way it is"...this week. Going for the Gold in Liberal Mitt-Picking.

Having read thousands of conservative posts the past 3 1/2 years moaning and groaning about every vacation President Obama and his family take. Whining about college transcripts--not to mention the birther nuts. Complaining about a White House vegetable garden--how dare the Obamas grow fresh veggies. Why go to the "foreign" state of Hawaii, who goes to Hawaii anyway? Shame on him for going to Martha's Vineyard. And golf, President Obama should never play golf to relax--they keep track of how many times he plays. And last but not least, the incessant whining about the cost to tax payers for AF One and the Secret Service.

In the spirit of the Olympics, it is now time for some serious, liberal Mitt-picking. Going for the Gold in Liberal Mitt-Picking begins in earnest today. Expect--at every opportunity as Willard plays "pretend"--this (according to conservative accusations) leftie, liberal, tree hugging, pinkie, commie, socialist, lazy bum to whine about Mitt. After all, "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander."

April, 2012, Mitt Romney said "people have to see that the president is not taking elaborate vacations and spending in a way that is inconsistent with the state of the overall economy." So why are Mitt and Ann in London? He many not be president but he's auditioning for the role. He could have watched it on NBC along with ordinary folks--who like those Pennsylvania bakery cookies--and saved a bundle.

Oh, that's right, Ann's Dressage horse. The one Mitt deducts $77,000 from taxes owed as a business expense while claiming it is a "therapy" horse for Ann who does not ride it but hires a surrogate to ride for her. Does the horse get Secret Service protection, too?

I'll bet Romney writes the London trip off his taxes--the Dressage horse--it's a business trip! Of course, we will never know because Mitt believes the established rules for Presidential and his own VP candidate do not apply to him, "...we've given all you people need to know..."

How much is it costing tax payers for Romney's Secret Service protection? Couldn't he just hire his own? The $57K per day he earns should cover it. Is Mitt's campaign paying for the trip to London, Poland and Israel or is this one of those "foreign diplomacy" trips arranged by his Congressional GOP pals and paid for by We the People? Inquiring Mitt-picking minds want to know.

Now that Mitt Romney is Globe trotting, he must qualify as a celebrity. President Obama should run a campaign ad showcasing Mitt's celebrity drawing power and compare him to Paris Hilton. What's that? No crowds filling the streets. Ahh, that's too bad. Wonder if he took his own supporters with him to applaud and cheer like he did when he spoke to the NAACP.

Romney gave a speech in London to tout his foreign policy and leadership credential. The Brits were not thrilled, something about rebuilding bonds with our Anglo/Saxon roots rang like a cracked bell. When was the last time anyone heard the term Anglo/Saxon? Afterwards, Mitt took questions from the press but insulted the US by refusing to answer theirs violating rule 5, never, never dis the US Press Corps.

Romney met with former, current and hope to be prime ministers who smiled and listened politely but looked bored. He forgot the name of the Labour Party leader but stopped just short of saying "hey, you."

NBC's Brian Williams interviewed Mitt in London. Poor Willard, he thought President Obama was in charge of the London Olympics and launched into a lengthy criticism of the event. Then in an effort to be funny, he insulted Brian Williams violating rule #6, never, never insult a reporter. By Thursday, the Brits were planning to ship Mitt back to the USA in a big Staples box via Fed Ex....while visions of George W. sugarplums danced in their heads.

My, my, my. Who knew that one day in London would find Romney on a REAL apology tour--apologizing all day for all things he said. In 24 hours, Mitt insulted the entire British nation, dissed the Olympics, offended British minorities, offended Prime Minister David Cameron, outraged the London Mayor who mocked Mitt before tens of thousands, forgot the Labour Party leader's name right after having been introduced, and he was not supposed to tell that he went to MI-6. In Mitt-picking liberal speak, in one day, Romney showed the world his arrogant, rude, ill-mannered, condescending self in full, flaming color.

The Guardian, do shut the h**l up like a good chap was only the beginning of the British media's assessment. The Telegraph described Mitt as "utterly devoid of charm and mildly offensive." "Mildly offensive" was British nice for total jerk. Rupert Murdoch's The Sun called it "Mitt Shambles". GOPer Charles Krauthammer ran "out of adjectives" to express his disbelief at "Mitt Shambles". One media source said he was worse than Sarah Palin; another mentioned "Dubya". Romney stepped in so much of his own do-do that he's wearing hip boots.

Rumor has it Romney decided to make a run for Switzerland to visit the millions he has stashed there to avoid paying taxes to the country he loves and sings about, "....America, America...."

Who knew that one day after starting to write this Liberal Mitt-Picking post, Mitt would implode on the World Stage and the British media would assume the role of Mitt-Picker and win the Gold. Cheers to Britain whose media is not afraid to call Romney what most liberal Mitt-pickers observed starting in 2007, and what the GOPers know but refused to acknowledge--until Krauthammer ran out of adjectives.

There's talk that Mitt Romney single-handedly made the GOP lie a fact and that President Obama will embark on an "Apology Tour" to apologize for Willard's huge and multiple gaffes while conservatives whine about VP Biden.

Enjoy the London Summer Olympics, they only come once every four years....just like presidential campaigns (thank heaven for that). Unlike Mitt Romney, I know the British will do a superb job, they will support the games and the athletes enthusiastically.....and I'll bet that, unlike Mitt in Salt Lake City, the Brits won't destroy the records a few days after closing ceremonies.

                                    Have a great weekend everyone!

After yesterday, Mitt's campaign was reduced to sending out surrogates to say that foreign policy wasn't important, the election was all about the economy. Well, if that is the case, why is Mitt (or someone-we don't know who) spending all the money and time to go on this foreign trip? It isn't to visit our troops, that is for sure. Wait---it is fund-raising. Now we know.

And Mitt is an arrogant ass! At a fundraiser last night he's "looking forward to returning the Churchill bust to the Oval Office that Obama gave away". Yeah Mitty, let's bring up that controversy yet again. I'm sure the good people of Britain want to rag on Tony Blair about a bust that was only loaned to Bush for the duration of his term. As if they would ever loan it to Romney-what an imperialist!

Enjoyed the update Jody--thank you. Just reinforces what a "wazzock" Mitt really is. He is an embarrassment to the American people. He comes off as smug and condescending--who else would have Olympic buttons printed with "We love you Mitt"? Talk about entitlement mentality--he and his family feel that he is entitled to be president because it is his turn. Quite different from our current president who has worked his way up--and provides a great example of the American Dream!

I'm still smiling from reading it.

If the Mittiot's Excelllent Overseas Adventure was planned to showcase his foreign policy skills, all I can say is FAIL. Our President has a real handle on foreign policy, due partly to Mrs. Clinton, I'm sure. Thank you for this post, Jody, I always enjoy reading your recaps.

I'm not going to join these sycophants praising your work. I'm going to get right to the point. It's about freaking time you remembered why every week has a Friday. It's for a wrap-up, and you've been negligent and hurtful..........and mean to those of us who come here every week mumbling, "Is she back, is she back?"

That said, it should be noted that Mitt Romney will be the nation's first WASM to finish in second place in the Presidential race, his foreign relations skills notwithstanding.

Don't forget next Friday. I'll be here to make sure you didn't.

Jody -- Great post. The view you provide with the week that was perfectly encapsulates the world in which Republicans live. Some of their antics/actions defy logic and should be filed under utterly ridiculous but true.

Note about NJNB -- Perhaps she's absent because Maraniss has written an op-ed in WaPo slamming the right for twisting his words. A piece with NJNB name all over it. Ha!

agn, perhaps you did not read carefully. I do believe he was born in Hawaii. What I wonder is how he represented himself, a self-admitted C high school student, to get into top colleges. Did you see the pdm of the pamphlet a few weeks ago from the publishing company who was introducing him as a future author? Obama was listed as being born in Kenya. He had control over what was in the pamphlet. Why in the world would someone "guess" that he was born in Kenya? He must have said it at one time or another. I repeat, I believe the birth certificate he produced, that he was born in Hawaii. I just wonder about his claims at other advantageous times in his life. Not low IQ, not mean spirited, just really wondering.

reader- the pamphlet you mention has been investigated. The editor who put that material out there has admitted to making a mistake when writing the brief bio on Obama, confusing that his father was from Kenya and he was born in Hawaii. Mr. Obama had no control over what was put into that pamphlet, that would be the charge of one of the editors of the publishing house, and they have admitted full responsibility for the error.

If you were wondering about this so much, it wouldn't have been hard to find the information... google is your friend...

Miriam Goderich issued the following statement to Political Wire:

"You're undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me -- an agency assistant at the time. There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more."

Romney needs to end his foreign tour and head home. If this morning's anemic economic growth report doesn't propel him into a commanding lead, he has absolutely no hope of winning in November. Oh ~ ~ ~ ~ and someone give Mitt a piece of advice he sorely needs. . . . . . . . . . . . "smile broadly, nod generously, and shut the Hell up."

                                      TJ Walker

Romney does have a temporary reprieve, given the suspension of campaigning due to the Colorado massacre and several long-planned foreign trips by the Romney campaign. However, the IRS tax return PR nightmare for Romney has not gone away; it has merely been put on hold for a week or two.

Romney’s answers might not ever satisfy the Obama Campaign, the Democrats or members of the media. But now, Romney is facing increased pressure from leading Republican politicians, conservative media outlets and the entire GOP establishment.

                                      Life Is Unfair

                                      26. A fundamental tenet among conservatives is that life is unfair. Is it possible that while it is unfair that you should have to release all your tax returns, you are simply going to have to do so before your campaign can focus on other issues?

                                      27. They may be judging you unfairly, but more and more political observers are surmising that you do not wish to make your tax returns public because you are guilty of exploiting every possible loophole, offshore account and accounting gimmick to pay almost zero percent in taxes. Why are they wrong for surmising this?

                                      28. If it isn’t zero, why don’t you want people to know this?

                                      29. If you paid a tax rate as low as 1%, isn’t that better than 0%?

                                      30. Life and politics can often be unfair. You seem to suggest that you do not want to release your taxes because Democrats will be mean to you. Is that really a good reason not to do something?

                                      31. Aren’t they being mean to you already?

                                      32. You claim that you do not want to release your taxes because your opponents will distort and lie about them. Isn’t that what is already happening?

                                      33. How exactly would releasing your tax returns give greater license to your enemies to attack your tax records than what they are already doing?

                                      34. Your wife says so many more things would be open to criticism. Why?

                                      35. Does your rationale for not releasing your tax records because your enemies could criticize you for elements within also justify hiding heart disease or a criminal record?

                                      36. You have paid tens of millions of dollars in taxes over your lifetime, far in excess of most people but people just are not focusing on the amount of taxes you pay. Should the amount be what people focus on, not the fact that you paid 14% of your income in taxes and the middle class paid more than twice that percentage?

                                      37. Conservatives believe that policy makers must accept human nature for what it is, not what we want it to be. A corollary is that humans can be greedy and resentful. Can you understand why a married couple of schoolteachers with a combined income of $87,000 who pays 35% of their income in income taxes might resent that you paid only 13.9% of your income in taxes in 2010

                                      38. Would you support a cap on personal income taxes of, say, $1 million?

                                      39. What is wrong with saying no one should have to pay more than a million dollars a year in federal taxes, even if they make $100 million or a billion?

                                      40. Do you resent paying taxes?

                                      Father

                                      41. Your father released all of his tax returns for 12 years when he ran for president. Was he wrong?

                                      42. Did your father feel an obligation to pay many taxes and to avoid tax shelters?

                                      43. Was he moral or just naive?

                                      44. Why did your father release 12 years of tax returns?

                                      45. Did he set a bad precedent?

                                      46. Was he stupid?

                                      47. Why do you want to be less transparent than your father?

                                      48. Isn’t there a chance your father would have wanted you to follow in his footsteps regarding disclosure?

                                      49. Do you remember talking to him about that?

IR---what could be worse than what we already know of Mitt's taxes: 14% effective tax rate, foreign investments, deduction for business expenses of a dressage horse which Mitt also calls a therapy horse, questionable contributions to and/or valuations of his IRA? He's been running for President for 6 years and couldn't get his finances organized in such a way as to allow their release? And we're supposed to put this man in charge of our tax policy?

It's halftime for Obama, but it's still early in the game for Romney.

Obama has already shown his cards, but with the exception of firing up his base, has had little positive effect on the rest of the voters. The economy has no wind, unemployment will become the determining factor in the race, and Obama can only play negative ball from here on out.

Romney has delayed (correctly in my opinion) to play his hand until after the convention. He has plenty of time to overcome the "likeability" factor, and play to his strengths (economy) over the next few months. Romney will gain momentum and Obama will swim in mud.

Likeability isn't going to win the election, it's going to come down to who the public believes will best put food on their table.

                                      Romney will win big.

mlk: Romney can't overcome the likeability factor...that the issue. Romney can't be likeable, it just isn't in his DNA. Perfect example was yesterday and his alienating the Brits. Romney doesn't know how to be likeable and that is something that can't be taught.

Romney has delayed because he can't afford to let people see the real him, he might lose the nomination....that is the only reason Romney is holding off.

You might want to deny likeability is a big issue when it comes to voting...but it is. Many people who don't follow politics like some of us, vote on likeability.

Part of the reason he's perceived as not "likeable" is that he's not really shown himself to the American public, and so to this point he's been defined by Obama.

As Romney gets out in front of people, the likeability factor will become less an issue.

If you have two candidates with equal strengths, likeability is important. When you have two candidates so clearly different, it's the strength of their arguments that will carry the day.

How utterly socialist to insinuate the government should put food on your table. What is it with you conservatives - one minute you want government reduced to nothing but a figurehead, the next you are begging for the government to put food on your table. Hate to tell you, but ya can't have it both ways.

Romney's tendency to appear condescending to, "the little people" and being unlikeable will play a big role in the election. The economy is important but he has to make people think he can do better when most Americans blame Bush for our current state and not Obama. When Romney brings up his business background Obama will point out his success was at the expense of average Americans. If he tries to point to his record as governor.............er well that's unlikely, never mind.

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

                                        • From bondage to spiritual faith;
                                        • From spiritual faith to great courage;
                                        • From courage to liberty;
                                        • From liberty to abundance;
                                        • From abundance to complacency;
                                        • From complacency to apathy;
                                        • From apathy to dependence;
                                        • From dependence back into bondage."

And, in accepting this Gold Medal, I'd just like to say, I couldn't do it alone. I couldn't report on the Tea Party in Maine, if it weren't for First Read, the technicians who extract bubblegum, the interns who have to delete advertizing posts and obscenity, and, of course, Al Gore, who helped get the Internet off the ground in the beginning.

And, I'd just like to say, as a college-educated woman between the ages of 30-50's, in a smaller city, apparently, MY TIME HAS COME TO SELECT THE PRESIDENT, according to what I just read on First Read! And I choose President Obama!

I don't think this party rhetoric and divisiveness will really persuade new supporters or maintain any on the fence in this election. What will have the most impact is like news economic news breaking now that will influence the most. People can talk politics all they want but the real facts are in the pocket books of Americans and if you disagree you are severely deceiving yourself.

Is this another summer of recovery per Joe Biden? 2nd quarter GDP release 1.3%growth per Wall Street Journal. Growth that small doesn't move the unemployment rate down. I guess 1.3% GDP to the President shows that his plan worked. For all you Obama supports you keep on bringing up tax returns, Bain and Ann Romney's horse while the economy continues to go backwards. I'm sure Mitt Romney and his supporters will continue to point out what a failure this President is when it comes to the economy.

I'm waiting for Obama supporter to mention the economy without blaming George Bush. Please tell me when is this economy going to be Obama's economy? I'll expect to hear nothing but crickets from the die hard Obama supporters.

"HIS" programs ? I thought the U.S. Constitution called for a SEPARATION OF POWERS. The legislative branch is to make the laws, the executive branch is to see the laws are carried out, and the Supreme Court is to decide Constitutional issues.

Obama wants to demand what the laws must be, then pick and choose which laws he will decide to enforce, and he seeks to intimidate the Supreme Court into leaving laws alone because he says so !! It all fits the pattern of a dictator in the making.

But you Obama leg-humpers are unable to see he is usurping his power on a regular basis. You are also unable to ADMIT THAT THE ELECTIONS OF NOVEMBER, 2010 WERE A DIRECT REPLY TO OBAMA'S ABUSE OF POWER.

That is why you guys were "shellacked" in Obama's own words. You still have not learned from your mistakes.

When has pointing fingers, blaming others and campaigning ever solved problems? How does adding trillions upon trillions of debt ever solved a financial debacle? This country needs a proven leader, not a failed, never had a "real job" community organizer. ABO, so Romney 2012.

Why doesn't Matt Lauer or Chuck or any of you guys press Romney when he gives this prepared line about releasing as many tax returns as Mccain? McCain was a senator was YEARS and had filed numerous disclosures unlike Romney. We know what McCain's job was for 2o years-we don't know anything about Romney's other than what he says which is very little. We are entitled to know where he has invested and in what. Obama would never have been allowed to get away with this. Rush etc would have said he was a secret terrorist. I have yet to hear one follow-up from the press..you guys just take it and move on. He needs to be challenged that he and McCain are NOT in the same position.

So, for those of you keeping score...

Bat-S*** Crazy Congresswoman Michele Bachmann channels her inner McCarthy and accuses Huma Abedin, Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, of secretly working for The Muslim Brotherhood.

Challenged for accountability in the face of her wild-eyed accusations, she refuses to back down and goes after Congressman Keith Ellison.

                                        ...DOUBLE-DOWN!!!

Asked for his opinion on Bachmann's accusations, Newt Gingrich defends her saying, “There haven’t been allegations, there was a question. The question should be asked across the board.”

                                        ...TRIPLE-DOWN!!!

Asked this morning about Bachmann's accusations, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said, "If you read some of the reports that have covered the story, I think that her concern was about the security of the country. So that's all I know."

                                        ...QUADRUPLE-DOWN!!!

Well, gee, Eric, maybe we should find out what Her Wackiness knows (or thinks she knows). Maybe there should be, I don't know, some kind of ethics investigation. I mean, don't you think it would be irresponsible for, say, Congressman Alcee Hastings started running around claiming that Speaker Boehner had ties to the KKK but offered nothing in the way of proof?

...or maybe the RNC is making too much money off of "The Mouth That Roared".

I see Cantor and his good buddy John Boehner are on different pages again on this one:

"Cantor’s comments are in stark contrast to Speaker John Boehner’s swift and strong denunciations of Bachmann’s conduct.

Earlier this month, Boehner said that questioning whether Clinton aide Huma Abedin had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood was “pretty dangerous.”

I don’t know Huma, but from everything I do know of her, she has a sterling character,” Boehner said. “And I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.”

Oh, wait - even Grover Norquist wants no part of this one! :

"It’s completely indefensible, there’s nothing else to say,” Norquist said in an interview with POLITICO."

Can't wait to hear Bachmann "roar" her apology on this one. But I'm guessing it'll be a long wait.....

                                        joAnne in PA,

Even the Council of Catholic Bishops have spoken out against Bachmann's remarks about Muslims.

Lot of conservative Catholics in the 6th district of MN.

BTW Obama is up 6% in MN polls and up over Romney in the southern part and 10% in the northeastern part of state. The major issue in these areas are heath care.

Problem is: Romney isn't likeable and the more he gets "out in front" the less people like what they see. This idea that he is going to morph into a warm, compassionate guy is nonsense.

Obama inherited a mess and as a small biz owner I can feel the economy here in FLA starting to move. It's going to take time. Romney has no plan other than being Bush 2.0. Been there done that. It will be more pain not less. It's not just about likeability it's about Romney's plans which are archaic. Welcome back to the 1950s on every social issue or should I said welcome to the way they do it in the Mormon church: women and gays get ready to be further repressed.

What about Obama other than him being black leads people to question his birth and college records? Anyone? Bueller? Right. Because he's black. Shame on you republicans who keep it up. Mitt's Dad was born in Mexico where the family had gone to be polygamists. Anyone questioning his birth? Maybe he was really born in a mormon commune in Mexico. It's a cover-up!! If Obama's family had ties to polygamy Rush's brains would have come out of his head in fury. But Mitt's white so let's take the official records as gasp official records and not question HIS birth.

Patty, Focus on the task at hand. In November we need to elect a better leader who can fix the economy. While it is hard to dismiss the symbolism of Obama being the first 1/2 black president. We should focus on what his misguided policies have done for America. Obamacare alone will put 10's of millions more people on public assistance. We should be focusing on getting them jobs and opportunity. Who these candidates grad fathers sleep with is interesting but not relevant to fixing America...

exactly how are republicans planning on getting people jobs and opportunity? with tax cuts for the rich (cause the past 10 years of that have worked really well in creating jobs...)? with their repeal of the ACA? oh, i remember now, it is drill baby drill right? everyone can get jobs dredging tar sands oil and ruining our environment even more for some measly short term gain...

I don't see any misguided policies from the Obama Administration. What i see is a minority group that has done all they can in order to make the president fail in a re-election bid from day 1 of his term, and that decision has put our governement into partisan gridlock where the policies of the majority have been unable to move through congress. That group has no ideas, no platform other than retreads of previous policies that failed, and gives this nation no hope of success unless you are already at the top. Their economic and budget policies are the popular definition of insanity, 'repeating the same behavior and expecting different results.'

Feel free to spout your ABO mantra, but don't expect anyone outside of your partisan compatriots to agree with it...

Here was the full question and answer...

                                        BRIAN WILLIAMS:
And in the short time you've been here in London, do they look ready to your experienced eye?

                                        MITT ROMNEY:
You know, it's hard to know just how well it were turn out -- will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting, the stories about the -- private security firm not having enough people -- the sup -- supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials, that obviously is not something which is encouraging. Because in the games, there -- there are three parts that makes games successful.

Number one, of course, are the athletes. That's what overwhelmingly the games are about. Number two are the volunteers. And they'll have great volunteers here. But number three are the people of the -- of the country. Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? And that's something which we only find out once the games actually begin.

                                        1. Mr. Romney mentioned the "public unions". If that's what this was really about, wouldn't he say so?

                                        2. Next time, how about we not gloss over the private security firm that was hired and couldn't do the job?

Eleanor was ugly, Nixon a crook, Reagan senile, Clinton a shirt chaser, Bush 43 an alcoholic, and Obama a skinny guy with Will Smith ears. But no foreigner flying under the flag of diplomacy has ever come to American soil to 'point those things out.' What is painfully obvious here is that Mitt is extremely scripted ~ and when he deviates from the script, he is fundamentally lost.

Unless Romney talks in front of the crowd at the games he will not have the crowd Senator Obama had on his trip across the pond in 2008 100,000-300,000 people in nearly every country he was in.

Clean up in Aisle 5: Romney later tried to clean up the mess after visiting Cameron at 10 Downing Street, “offering effusive praise for the London games, and calling the city's preparation for the event ‘really quite an accomplishment,’”

It is comical how many times ANY of the GOP clowns need to be "Re-phrased"

Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Santorum, Gingrich and now the Mittster just cannot open their mouths without putting their foot into it!!!

The one guy (Ron Paul) who clearly and directly makes his case and never has to retract anything isn't even considered, yet buffoons like Cain and Santorum were actually once in the lead for the GOP nomination.

                                        I didn't vote for Obama in '08 and won't in '12. (Libertarian)
