Romney tells London fundraiser he'll return bust of Churchill to Oval Office

LONDON -- Mitt Romney collected $2 million from expats at a fundraiser here this evening, delivering remarks that seemed to suggest the presumptive GOP presidential nominee was maybe measuring the drapes in the Oval Office, to an extent.

Romney told the crowd in the United Kingdom's capital that he was "looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again," referring to the sculpture of the towering World War II-era prime minister that President Obama removed from the Oval Office after taking office.

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate. Mitt Romney walks out of 10 Downing Street after meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London July 26.

"You live here, you see the sites day in and day out, but for me as I drive past the sculpture of Winston Churchill and see that great sculpture next to Westminster Abbey and Parliament and with him larger than life, enormous heft of that sculpture suggesting the scale of the the grandeur and the greatness of the man, it tugs at the heart strings to remember the kind of example that was led by Winston Churchill," Romney told donors gathered at the Mandarin Oriental hotel this evening.

Obama had the bust of Churchill replaced with a bust of Abraham Lincoln as part of the customary redecorating on which a new president usually embarks. At the time, some British news outlets speculated that the switch was an affront to the "special relationship" between the United States and United Kingdom.

Romney took questions from his 250 guests -- all American citizens who had their passports checked at the door -- while atypically allowing the press to remain in the room for the Q&A.

While Romney made no major news, he did criticize the financial regulatory reform bill -- a regular topic of his stump speech that took on pronounced meaning in London, one of the world's financial centers.

"I very much believe in updated regulation, but I believe Dodd-Frank has gone beyond what was appropriate for the sector. With regard to regulation here in the UK, I’ve got nothing to say about what goes on here, but back in the U.S. I want us to stay highly competitive, the financial capital of the world," Romney said. "At the same time I want to make sure that we protect the citizens in the nation and have rules that people can rely upon.

The presumptive GOP nominee did not further comment upon the day's other media kerfuffle, over comments he made appearing to criticize London's readiness to host the Olympic games, but did praise the games' setting in downtown London.

“What I love and I'm sure you've already seen this is how the organizers have placed the Olympic venues right in the heart of the city. So that it's not that Olympics will be off in some far place that only people who are able to get a ticket can then experience, instead it's right here," Romney said.

Romney was accompanied by his sons Tagg and Craig, and their wives, along with his wife Ann, who over the weekend will travel to Wales to visit with relatives there, according to a campaign aide.

Earlier in the day, Romney met with a pantheon of current and former British government officials, including Prime Minister David Cameron, Foreign Secretary George Osbourne and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. A senior adviser to the campaign, present for the meetings said they mostly revolved around economic issues, including the looming fiscal cliff in the United States, and the Eurozone crisis here in Europe.

In remarks to reporters this afternoon, Romney also disclosed that he spoke today with Sir John Sawers, the head of Britain's intelligence agency MI6; a meeting not on his public schedule and which his campaign would not explicitly confirm or comment upon after the fact.

Meanwhile, in other news, Romney's trip to London has been widely reported as a complete bust after telling Londoner's they did a piss-poor job planning the Olympics. Being an expert at this sort of thing, Romney agreed to leap in, get a few billion from the U.S. government, and slap those lackey socialist Brits into shape. As part of the agreement, he will work for free as long as he is given 50% of the profits and 100% of the UK pension fund. On a side note, he will retro-actively retire from Bain Capital sometime in the next 2 or 3 years.

Here's what the Mayor of London thinks of Willard;

Later, London Mayor Boris Johnson, also a Tory, called out Romney in a speech at an Olympics event before to tens of thousands of people in London’s Hyde Park:

JOHNSON: I’ve never seen anything like this in all my life. … people are coming from around the world and they are seeing us and they are seeing the greatest city on earth. And there are some people who are coming from around the world who don’t yet know about all the preparations we’ve done to get London ready in the last seven years. I hear there’s a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we’re ready. He wants to know whether we’re ready. Are we ready? Yes we are!

I'm sure passports weren't the only thing that was checked. I'm sure the right political affiliation was very much required as well.

Here's what Slovakian foreign minister Miroslav Lajcak, who is also a deputy prime minister thinks of Willard's BS;

People have moved on. We are in a different situation now. We are discussing a different project. I see no reason to revisit discussions from three years back.

In fact, this has been a non-issue for quite sometime. The Polish foreign minister said at the time of the new missile defense configuration announcement: “When President Obama announced the new configuration of the system, we did say that we liked the new configuration better, but I think you didn’t believe us.”

Lajcak went on to give the Journal an explicit endorsement of the Obama missile defense plan, lauding its NATO auspices rather than the abandoned Bush administration’s bi-lateral approach with host countries. While Romney said in his speech that Obama was bowing to Russia — whom he considers the U.S.’s “number one geopolitical foe” — Lajcak, in the Journal’s words, said “the U.S. and its European allies must continue to try and explain the defense plan to Russia, which remains skeptical.”

PS: I still want to know why Willard isn't going to visit the troops in Afghanistan?

This one also cracked me up. Thanks to the Brits for inventing "Romney Shambles". Boris better not turn his back on Romney - he has long, blond hair, and we know what happens to Romney when he sees locks of long blond hair on men. We can only hope the TSA confiscated the scissors at the airport.

In what’s been widely panned as “Romney Shambles,” the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s trip to Europe hasn’t gotten off to a great start. http://thinkprogress.org/security/2012/07/26/593261/johnson-romney-olympics/

Anytime Layton! Check out what Netanyahul thinks of Willard! lol

Vanity Fair:

ROMNEY: "We [Mitt & Netanyahu] can almost speak in shorthand. We share common experiences and have a perspective and underpinning which is similar."

ROMNEY: "I'd get on the phone to my friend Bibi Netanyahu and say, 'Would it help if I said this? What would you like me to do?'"

ROMNEY: “Israel’s current prime minister is not just a friend, he’s an old friend

Netanyahu on the other hand has quite a different memory:

“I remember him [Romney] for sure, but I don’t think we had any particular connections, I knew him and he knew me, I suppose.”

He doesn't even have his own personality to decorate around. Needs to do what Bush did. What does that tell us?

Liberals need to keep grasping at straws to find some reason to be hopeful of the election. With 3.5 years of failure under his belt, the Obama strategy of dividing the country to stay in power is not going as planned. Thinking some July news article from London is going to help Obama is laughable. All Romney will need to do is remind everyone of the Obama world apology tour where bowing to foreign leaders made the US look weak.

Obama had the bust of Churchill replaced with a bust of Abraham Lincoln as part of the customary redecorating on which a new president usually embarks.

So, why are Republicans making such a big deal about President Obama's decision to return a bust of the United Kingdom's greatest leader and replace it with a bust of the United States' greatest leader?

It's not about the the actual bust or the dumb iPod.........it's about the arrogance, the lack of decorum, the ignorance towards diplomacy, the slap in the face to our allies. All the comments from Obama supporters show just how far half the people of this country have sunk. Anyone that thinks our treasonist WH occupier is justified in any of his actions is lost. There are a lot of screwed up people out there.

Expat's eh??? Nice shortening of the REAL word expatriate

The term 'expatriate' in some countries also has a legal context used for tax purposes. An expatriate living in a country can receive a favourable tax treatment. In this context a person can only be an expatriate if they move to a country other than their own to work with the intent of returning to their home country within a certain period. The number of years can vary per tax jurisdiction, but 5 years is the most commonly used maximum period. If you are not affected by taxes 3 years is normally the maximum time spent in one country

So,,,,,,,,Basically Romney met with a bunch of other rich folks who are avoiding paying their taxes

Another ignorant lib lie in need of the truth.

The US is one of only 2 countries in the world that tax based on world wide income. An expat on temporary assignment (1-5 years for example) in a foreign country is required to pay all US taxes. Furthermore they are required to pay the taxes in the foreign country they reside.

Since no US employee would accept an assignment where they would have to pay FULL taxes in two countries, the company they work for "Tax Equalize" them. Meaning, the US employee pays no more or NO LESS taxes than if he/She had never left the US. The company pays any and all tax burden above and beyound this amount for both countries. If the employee receives a tax refund as a result of foreign tax credits, that refund must be handed over to the company that paid the foreign tax on his/her behalf.

It is very complex and costs a company 7-10 thousand per expat to prepare such complex tax returns to ensure the employee pays...again no more or NO LESS than his/her full US tax burden.

There isn't a single expat working for a reputatable company avoiding taxes, plain and simple.

Wrong- but you obviously know nothing about the tax code.

If an American citizen moves to another country for employment reasons, they are fully liable for income taxes to this country- as well as the country in which they are earning their money. So, those living in the UK must pay resident alien taxes, AND U.S. taxes.

That little Wiki clip you have? Perfectly correct- as regards citizens of other countries than the U.S. for example, a Brit ex-pat living in Singapore is NOT liable for U.K. Taxes- only Singaporean. The same is true for Japanese, French, German, -actually, almost every other country in the world.

Not the U.S. Uncle Sam sticks his hand in your pocket even if you earn your living on Mars.

Yes I enjoy the heck out of reading damage! He's collapsed more than any poster here, an indication of him being spot on. Personnally I have never ever put a poster on ignore, never collapsed or flagged a post for collaspe as I am not afraid of the truth like libs are or what others have to say. I read it all.

You on the other hand, I gave up waiting for you to post something of value besides name calling.

I read Jody and IR too. IR has a nice, down home writing style which I like, but is in no way shape or form an independent.....hasn't posted an unbiased sentence in years.

LIke IR, Jody writes well but is too partisan. Picks through that which fits the narrative and ignores the "rest" of the story. Too bad because both, if interested in the whole truth, could really bring something of value here.

Certainly Winston Churchill was a great leader. Two others of his time should also be right next to him on Willard's credenza and they are Stalin and Roosevelt. The trio who led the allies in WWII. Put him in the middle with Roosevelt on one side and Stalin on the other. On the out side put Jos. Smith and Brigham Young. That way Willard covers all his bases and everybody loves him.

At least he isn't going around like Bush and calling Her Magesty "Queenie" or referring to the Russian leader as Phooty Poot Poot.

If I were President, I'd replace the bust of President Lincoln with one of William Shakespeare . . . . you know, the one that folds over backwards and you get to flip a switch that opens up the hidden door to the sliding poles to the Bat Cave!

In all seriousness, Winston Churchill was a very astute and well spoken man who was exactly the right leader for England at the right time. As was President Lincoln for us. Neither bust is out of place if they inspire.

                        Matthew:

Good post. Might I add that both Lincoln and Churchill contrast with our current president, who is poorly suited to confront the issues that we face, and is exactly the wrong leader for us at this time,

What is wrong with this man Romney - The bust of Winston Churchill is the most important item on his agenda !!!!! Winston belongs in England and that is where he should stay. Churchill was a great politican but an awful scholar - I can imagine the quip Churchill would make he he knew the fuss about the "bust". Romney will say and do anything for votes !!!!

Something the President would never do. Oh, wait, the "No black child left behind" Office will be created to help only black children. Oh no, our president wouldn't pander for votes, would he?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is creating a new office to bolster education of African-American students.

The White House says the office will coordinate the work of communities and federal agencies to ensure that African-American youngsters are better prepared for high school, college and career.

Obama is announcing his election-year initiative Wednesday night in a speech to the civil rights group the National Urban League as he seeks to rally black voters. Aides say his executive order, to be signed Thursday, will set a goal of producing "a more effective continuum" of programs for African-American students.

(slow opening scene in the formal dining hall. Food is being served by properly attired and attentive waiters. Glasses are being lifted, wine is bing poured, silverware is clinking on the wedgewood. All guests are attired formally - long dresses for the ladies, men in white ties and tails. Near the head of the table are PM Churchill and Gov. Romney.)

Romney speaks, "You know Winnie, if I'm elected President I'll put your bust right back in the oval office!"

Churchill turns aside to speak to another guest, "Pardon me Lady Astor, I'll take that coffee now."

Tunanut -- I gather from your disdain of President Obama wanting to establish a committee to study why African-Americans are being left behind that you think that things as they are need no fixing. This means that you endorse the urban African-American attitudes (education not valued as it should be, success is a "white" thing, etc.). Let my qualify my last statement by saying "not ALL urban African-Americans" (I know I'm on thin ice here).

President Obama is pointing out a problem that needs to be fixed.

                            You don't see a problem.

You should then go into a depressed area of a city and join a gang. Good luck.

Pull the race card when you have nothing else, right? I just hope you fools are ok with our first Hispanic President starting a "Hispanic Child Only" Office of the Presidency and the first Indian President starting a "Indian Child Only" Office of the government. Talk about dividing our country, this guy is good. Besides no Office of the Presidency is going to fix the degradation of the family unit in any community. Personally, I would rather see a "free ride" to these at risk kids for college providing they make the grades and stay out of trouble, but they wouldn't have to be AA to qualify, just underprivileged. Cause I'm racist like that.

Who said that returning the bust of Churchill is the most important thing on Romney's agenda? The only people that I hear saying it are the people on this board.

Even you can't be unaware that US relations with UK, Poland, former President and Polish national hero Lech Walesa specifically, Israel, and Prime Minister Netanyahu specifically, have deteriorated during the Obama administration due in some cases to specific policy decisions that Obama has made. If you don't know what I'm talking about I can enumerate, but I would prefer that you do your own research. The message that Romney is trying to convey is that he, unlike Obama, intends to treat our friends like friends, and our adversaries like adversaries. It is my opinion that this would be a much better foreign policy for us and for our friends, than the policy that Obama is currently pursuing.

One final note. Reading the swill on this board is painful. If you don't have anything substantive to say, then please do us all a favor and STFU.

I think the best way to describe waskily womney's campaign...it's going Quayle (Dan).

You decide, which are Dan Quayle quotes and which are waskily womney's quotes?

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe."

"Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child."

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

but, when you read them you can easily attribute them to either Quayle AND FUD Romney!!

Here is a Previous Post by me on First Read about Romney's Overseas Trip. I see I was DEAD ON in my assessment of Romney and this Trip. He could not wait to Trash the President to other People overseas and Leaders. Driving a wedge with the Winston Churchill Bust was just a taste of Romney trying to undermind the President to other World Leaders and his just a Candidate. This man is a one of the Best Liars with a Straight face that I have ever seen. The funny thing about him is that he thinks he is showing his PRESIDENTIAL BONAFIDES! So far all I see is an embarassment. See Previous Comment about 1 Week Ago Below"

"The Romney Campaign is lying when they said the Politics Stop at the Water's Edge. I know some of you Romney Bots will say how do I know. A person like Romney who has twisted himself into a PRETZEL to get this Nomination and totally has done a 180 on what his previous belief System was, You be the Judge.

Romney wants to win this one for the Mormon Church so bad he can taste it. He is TAKING all kinds of heat on his Offshore dealings and still refuses to reveal information. Ann Romney has said it is their turn and they have given "you people" all you need to know. He wants to do it because his Dad did not.

He has lied and made up things on this President, I don't see anything stopping him when he Goes overseas.

The Republican Congressional People won't put him down if he does. As a matter of fact they might encourage it. Why? because the Republicans have shown VERY LITTLE, IF ANY, Respect for this President or the Office, when he is traveling overseas to Represent this Country. Something that was UNHEARD of in my Lifetime of voting and watching Presidential Politics to Bad Mouth a Sitting President overseas. The HATRED for Barack Obama is so INTENSE by Republicans, to the point, that they really don't "give a Damn about the Office of the Presidency" as long as he is in it."

Romney has always acted PALIN like to me. He had HOOF AND MOUTH DISEASE when he was battling for the Nomination.

You know the fallacy people have about a well-dressed, RICH man like Romney is that he is Smart because HE ran a "successful" business at the expense of a lot of People's Lives and Government Subsidizing that success.

A Fallacy about someone like Mitt, is that how can one FAIL, if you have been sent to the Finest Schools money can Buy, Daddy can afford to buy a Building so you won't fail and the ROAD IS PAVED FOR YOU, in Education, and especially Business. George W. Bush fell into the same Catagory as Romney. If you fail, it is because you are a total IMBECILE. If you have a 1/2 Brain, like Mitt you can look successful.

Romney had no worries of ever getting through school, so he had time to being a Bully in School, cutting off another Student's Hair. He has no problem sending someone's else's children to War and his Sons are too good to go because they have to help elect him President. He Dick Chaney would get along well they are Mr. 5 Deferments Each.

Show me the "self-made successful" person, a person who matches a Mitt Romney on Cheer Guts and Fortitude to make it in spite of the Pit Falls. I think you will really SEE the difference.

Mitt sat out because of that Money and Advantage from the most important Social Upheavals in this Country, during Mitt's time, Civil Rights and the Viet Nam War . Now he wants to VEIL himself in Secrecy about who HE REALLY IS. The Voting Public is suppose to be OK with that SECRECY from a person who wants to be President.

President Obama has been Examined from the day he was Conceived. Republican Party is ready to denounce Hawaii as a legitimate State. Slightly less than half of the Republican Party and others still believe he is a Muslim. Being born of an American seems to make no difference to these people.

So all of you impressed with Mitt's so call Job Creation/Business skills, I beg to differ. I can only hope there are enough voters who agree with me.”

The Churchill sculpture was on loan to the White House after 9/11. It wasn't a gift. Once again, the Repubs think they have a weak spot to attack and play up the drama to the hilt and try to turn it into a heart-wrenching soap opera. What a controversy about someone returning something to its rightful owner. I hate to say it, but I'm starting to miss Palin -- at least her mistakes were funny. Romney's are just pathetic.

You *itch and moan about what he does, but I ask you, what has the President done lately? Regardless of what he does now, the bottom line is he is not the President. How abouts we focus on what Obama is doing and saying since after all he does reside in the White House. You folks are pathetic, petty and refuse to see how you are being played for fools!!

Last time I checked he is the one pushing for a job bill to get passed, tax issue to get solved, and trying to get things done. Not talking rhetoric. If Romney is running for this office he deserves all the criticism that comes with it!!! I am surprised someone would say what he says right now is not important? Than why is he even overseas???

Obama had the bust of Churchill replaced with a bust of Abraham Lincoln as part of the customary redecorating on which a new president usually embarks

Art 15 sec 3 of this small arms treaty gives the US Government permission to bring the UN troops into this Country to enforce said treaty. READ IT! It gives the UN power to make unlimited Amendments by passing 2/3 vote by attending states. Obama is about to give the UN a blank check sponsored by Hillary Clinton her self!

You don't really understand the Constitution, do you? I'd loosen the tinfoil before permanent damage occurs.

JIM what are you talking about? If we are talking about the constitution it was written and in place about 170 years BEFORE the conception of the U.N., and to my knowledge, has never been emended to accommodate the organization. You sound like a conservative wingnut who is probably clutching a gun while typing with one hand!
