Updated at 8:02 a.m. ET on July 27: LONDON -- Mitt Romney found that all politics are, in fact, local after being forced Thursday to clarify remarks about London's preparation for the Olympics, which prompted a minor uproar in the British press.
In his interview last night with NBC’s Brian Williams, Romney called several logistical issues at the 2012 Olympic games here “disconcerting” -- including a contracted security firm’s failure to provide enough personnel -- and said that a possible planned strike by customs and immigration officials was “not something which is encouraging.”
Local press seized on the comments, which generated buzz on British television today and which one newspaper columnist called “derisory." Even Prime Minister David Cameron reacted, pointing out that the London games were being held in a major metropolitan area, not in “the middle of nowhere,” a comment interpreted as a reference to the games Romney headed in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Romney backtracked somewhat in comments to reporters outside the prime minister's residence, offering effusive praise for the London games, and calling the city's preparation for the event "really quite an accomplishment."
“I don’t know of any Olympics that’s ever been able to run without any mistakes whatsoever, but they’re small, and I was encouraged, for instance to see, things that could have represented a real challenge—such as immigration and customs officers on duty, that is something which was resolved and the people are all pulling together,” Romney said in a short availability with both American and British reporters.
“I’m very delighted with the prospects of a highly successful Olympic games,” Romney responded to a follow-up question. “What I’ve seen shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organization and I expect the games to be highly successful."
GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney sparked a political firestorm during an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, in which he questioned whether London was ready for the Olympics. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
The press availability capped a busy afternoon for the presumptive GOP nominee, who also met with an array of other current and former British leaders, including the deputy prime minister, foreign minister and leader of the opposition Labour Party -- along with former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Romney also tipped his hand at having met with the director of MI6, the British intelligence agency; the meeting wasn't on Romney's official itinerary, but Romney made reference to the meeting in his remarks.
Press were allowed to record only the opening pleasantries between Romney and his hosts, but aides to the campaign told reporters that a wide range of issues were discussed in each meeting. Romney and Foreign Secretary William Hague discussed economic policy, trade, and the deteriorating situation in Syria.

Romney elaborated somewhat on his discussions about foreign affairs during his comments to reporters, saying he not only discussed Syria but several other regional hot spots, including Iran, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“I don't want to refer to any comments made by leaders representing any other nations,” Romney said when asked to describe the conversations in more detail. “Nor do I want to describe foreign policy position which I might have while I’m on foreign soil. I think discussions of foreign policy should be made by the president, and the current administration, not by those who are seeking office.”

Romney’s first full day in London comes as the candidate begins a three-nation foreign trip set to also include stops in Israel and Poland, and which mixes private meetings, public appearances and fundraisers with Americans abroad.
Later this evening, Romney will hold one such high-dollar fundraiser at a luxury London hotel, with a minimum ticket price of $25,000 per person. In keeping with US election law, only American citizens will be allowed to donate and attend the fundraiser, and an invitation to the event examined by NBC News says passports will be checked at the door to ensure citizenship.
Afterwards, Romney is expected to attend a reception honoring American athletes at the USA House in the Olympic village. Romney’s experience in running the 2002 Salt Lake City games was a regular topic in his meetings here today, as were his plans for taking in some of the London games.
Romney told Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg he planned to attend a swimming event later this week because “Americans typically do well in swimming.”

And for those who claim Romney is a coward (Fiesty) for not visiting the troops I would like to know what you do to support the troops. (I happened to have served for 20 years on active duty).
Whenever Romney is unscripted, he insults someone's cookies or something -- in this case an important ally. After Dubya, the rest of the world only needs to learn that Romney is the Republican candidate, and that will end any further attempt to make a good impression.
And of course, the Olympics and traveling overseas has done nothing to stop people from demanding 8-10 years of tax returns. How pitiful that the only thing Romney is truly committed to is not releasing his tax returns. Now he's narrowed down excuses to McCain releasing two years, and the media fails to point out that McCain had been releasing financial information as a Senator for years prior, so that's why McCain only needed to release two years.
The secrecy obsession is opposite everything there is about being POTUS -- even having a smart phone is a problem. Did anyone notice when Romney took the stage at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he didn't want the guy who introduced him to touch him? One might understand discomfort with a bear hug, but Romney didn't even like the guy patting his shoulder.
Aside from bullying and impersonating a cop (which are only the tip of the iceberg of what we know so far), Romney has some issues that are "disconcerting."

Well, it became a big scandal once this one guy at the Telegraph in the UK declared it an outrage, and said it was all because Obama was way in over his head and not qualified to be president, because he didn't give their precious PM a nail file forged from the steel of the USS Shaw. Then, this hack's article got on the Drudge, and then it got on the American TV, and so on, etc.
The Telegraph certainly hopes lightning strikes over and over and over and over again, so they jumped right on this latest gaffe: Barack Obama gave the Queen of England an iPod, but she already has an iPod!
Well, she has a 6GB Mini she got in 2005. We don't know the details of which iPod Obama got for the queen, but it has video of her visit to the US in 2007, so it's probably a bit of an upgrade from the one she has! It's not a sentimental gift, but Obama doesn't know this old bat! And what, exactly, did she get our President?
"Gilding the lily" is something Romney does even when it's not necessary because he derives pleasure from it (see post above about psychological issues). The negative ads with blatant lies have the added benefit of getting everyone off the topic of his tax returns (and Bain, and Romney care, and....).
But it won't work. Romney, show us the tax returns! What rate did you pay in 2008? How did you get so much money in your IRA? What have you been up to in the Cayman Islands? Show us the tax returns!

You've been watching Chris Mathews too much. You really think Romney is going to say anything of substance on this trip? There is nothing he can say on Iran or Palestine that will make things worse. Relations with Iran are almost at war anyway regardless of who is President, but I think both sides will take a step back. The issue is how to stop Iran from getting the bomb and neither Obama nor Romney has the answer short of war. I think Obama missed an opportunity in 2009 after the Iranian elections but who can predict what would have happened and that window is closed now.
One (slight) difference I think between the two is that Romney is likely to be a stronger supporter of Israel than Obama. That might reassure the Israelis enough to deter them from attempting a preemptive strike on Iran, but this is a small hope as the Israelis will do what they think is right for them and if a country that hates you is coming close to building the capacity to destroy you who can blame them. Unlike Cheney's imaginations, this is a true extensional threat to Israel.

Did he tell the truth? Yes. Should he had? It depends on what side of the fence you are. As far as I'm concerned I have seen alot worse from many other Presidents (DEM or REP) including our current President OBama.
This is not going well for M.T. Suit for two reasons:
1) It seems that at almost every single opportunity where Romney goes off script or is a seemingly innocent conversation, he finds a way to offend or say something inappropriate. Obviously, his handlers knew this was a problem from day one and work around the clock to keep him in very controlled situations. We all have off-days, but this guy is having an off-decade.
2) Isn't preparing and running an Olympics something that Romney is using as his calling card (regarding organizational skills and diplomacy) for the office of President? Then why would his first action on this beauty pangent be to insult the host country? They found a problem, rapidly responded, and have mitigated it - isn't that the proper thing to do? M.T. Suit's master plan for everything seems to be to never have a problem -- well, good luck with that; especially with that one you're going to have on November 6, 2012.

Just a couple of clarifications for the avoidance of doubt....
-BrianB - the British aren't notoriously oversensitive - like the inhabitants of most countries they dislike having their country criticized by outsiders (it's our job to grumble about our country; one of our inalienable rights along with queueing, talking about the weather and drinking tea). I strongly suspect that had PM Cameron lambasted the US that the American press and TV (especially that Glenn Beck chap) would shout loudly (and possibly in Beck's case cry a little). Nobody likes someone from another country criticizing their country - that's only natural and hardly over-sensitive.
Of course, the British may criticize another country in private - as I'm sure Americans do (isn't that freedom of speech?) - but when in public and by public figures insulting other countries does tend to be frowned upon.
As for your reply to criticism - you do come across as somewhat over-sensitive yourself!

The Olympics security wasn't caused by Union types striking it was because the company contracted to provide the security said it provide thousands of staff and then failed to recruit them in a timely manner to enable both background checks and sufficient training. There was a proposed strike by some Immingration and Customs staff - based on the lack of commitment to strike action by the same people earlier in the year it would have barely created a ripple of perturbation. The strike was called off. Ironically, they were not proposing to strike for more money but because they felt there were inadequate staffing levels to keep the country safe - so they weren't out for themselves.

Romney was right to address them with his statement before going to Britain. It’s the typical thin-skin of the monarchy to get their panties all bunched up when someone criticizes anything they do. No Olympics have ever been on budget. The 2002 Olympics were less than 10 months after 9/11. The alleged cost overruns were still less than the 1996 Atlanta Olympics which cost over $2.5 billion ( in 2010 dollars). Not that I condone any waste, fraud and abuse, but that’s a different discussion.
What I’m saying is that despite everyone being gaga over killing Osama we still have a significant global terrorist threat. If he was so instrumental in the terrorist world why are we still spending hundreds of millions on security? Why do we still need Homeland Security? It was a phony war; politicians (from both sides) lied and exploited the American people's terror and anger. We as a nation were stupid, stupid enough to believe shoddy reports on WMDs, stupid enough to believe leaders that had no credible evidence for their claims, and stupid enough to believe that we could declare war in not one but two places, send an extremely small portion of our population to fight this conflict and do all the dirty work while we sit down sipping lattes in our safe little homes without fear of losing a loved one, and do all this "nation-building" and overthrowing cruel governments without raising taxes, cutting spending, or even raising money via war bonds to pay for the damn thing. We isolated ourselves from the war (and from the world) just so we could feel at peace and calm; at the very least, given that it was a war (no matter how unjustified), we could have initiated some kind of way to show humility, not just on the Fourth of July but every day until the war ended. The Royal Dock complex, adjacent to London’s financial district at Canary Wharf, is hosting up to one hundred super yachts, including twenty of the world’s most opulent, as the Olympic Games begin.
Its transformation into a Monaco-style marina playground for the super rich is a telling rebuttal to all the official rhetoric about the “peoples’ games.”
East London’s Royal Docks, including the Royal Albert Dock, the Royal Victoria Dock and the King George V Dock, was once a centre of industry and trade employing hundreds of thousands of workers.
The games in general are dominated by the vast global social chasm. Buckingham Palace played host to an Olympic reception on Monday, where Queen Elizabeth and others received the Olympic committee. It is estimated the official functions alone will cost up to £100 million; in addition, numerous unofficial events will be held.
The global elite view staying in a hotel as passé, or “so Beijing” as one newspaper put it.
Accordingly, many have therefore brought their super yachts and will arrive at Olympic events in helicopters or speedboats along the Thames, which connects Windsor Castle and Hampton Court, the Bank of England, Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, and so on. Curator of the National Maritime Museum Robert Blyth made the telling comparison that “Historically, kings and queens would have travelled by river—the roads were rather uncomfortable and dangerous.”
Fully 30 miles of road lanes are reserved for Olympic VIPs and competitors. “Games Lanes” is their official title, but they have been dubbed Zil lanes—after the limousines used by Stalinist apparatchiks in Soviet Russia who travelled in lanes that were reserved for them.
To stray into one will cost a member of the public a £130 fine. In addition 1,300 sets of traffic lights will be changed to facilitate Olympic traffic.
The Olympic organisers and the government have bent over backwards to show sensitivity to the desire of the financial elite to avoid the general public, whose lives are already in a ruinous state in socially deprived areas of London.
As Camilla Storey, an executive for the co-ordinating of Olympic party events put it, “We will have the entire financial industry, everybody from the worlds of business, sport and entertainment, all coming together. That is a unique opportunity. Do these people want to be lost in the hubbub, immersed in the tourist crowds, or do they want to be watching it, waited on hand and foot, from the top of one of the world’s most exclusive yachts?”
The Economic Times wrote that Roman Abramovich’s “sumptuous 1-billion-dollar boat, which is the playground of billionaires, oligarchs and A-list celebs, will be arriving in London on Tuesday. At 557ft, the Russian tycoon’s Eclipse is the largest private yacht in the world. It has two swimming pools, two helipads, a dedicated disco hall, 30 cabins, a cinema, a mini-submarine, and even its own missile defence system.”
Another super yacht moored at the Royal Dock is Ilona, the property of Australian-Israeli billionaire Frank Lowy. Lowy co-founded the shopping mall group Westfield. His yacht is docked a short distance from the company’s new £1.45 billion retail complex that dominates Stratford shopping district, adjacent to the Olympic Park.
The Daily Mirror reported on the arrival of Octopus, owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It boasts “two helipads, a swimming pool, nightclub, a basketball court, a cinema and two submarines. ... It has a 10-man submarine capable of two-week-long trips under the sea, as well as a smaller remote control-operated sub. ... The aft of the ship also contains hatches that can open to reveal a fully serviced spa, a bar area and access down to the sea to swim or to play with some of the yacht’s jetskis.”
The Mirror also reported “arriving soon will be Allen’s business partner, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, 56, in his super yacht Gogypus. Another set to arrive over the next few days is The Maltese Falcon, owned by Greek millionairess Elena Ambrosiadou, 42.”
According to Time magazine, even these luxury vessels are to be superseded. “To help oligarchs and tax exiles keep pace in 2011, U.K.-based Yacht Island Design has dreamed up the ‘Streets of Monaco,’ a $1.1 billion super yacht modelled on Monte Carlo. ... The four-story liner, which will stretch for more than 500 feet, will include a casino, race track, go-kart circuit, multiple tennis courts, and pools with swim-in Jacuzzi bars. Rather than having decks the ship will have buildings, including a replica of Monaco’s famed Hotel de Paris. The lucky owners will be able to enjoy their champagne kisses and caviar dreams on a helipad, beside waterfalls and in a restaurant with underwater views.”…

The secrecy obsession is opposite everything there is about being POTUS -- even having a smart phone is a problem. Did anyone notice when Romney took the stage at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he didn't want the guy who introduced him to touch him? One might understand discomfort with a bear hug, but Romney didn't even like the guy patting his shoulder.

A jobs bill would be a money bill, therefore would originate in the House -- except that Republicans control the House, so have blocked every proposed jobs bill.
