Veepstakes: Attacks on Portman start

AYOTTE: Kelly Ayotte makes The Hill’s 50 Most Beautiful list.

CHRISTIE: Cross him off the veepstakes? First, NBC’s Jamie Gangel reported that Christie would be keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention, now he says he’s open to a 2016 presidential bid: "If there's an opportunity for me to serve in another capacity and I think I have something to add to the mix, I don't think I'd back away from it,” he told AP.

PORTMAN: “Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) on Wednesday introduced a bill aimed at ending the threat of a government shutdown once and for all,” The Hill writes. “The bill would automatically extend government spending at current levels for 120 days when funding expires. If Congress continues to fail to act, spending would be cut by 1 percent across the board every 90 days.”

“Prospective VP candidate for Mitt Romney, Rob Portman, is under criticism by Democrats for advice to George W. Bush that resulted in damaging the U.S. steel industry. His advice is linked to sales declines and job losses. His defense is that Bush did better for steel than Clinton,” the Washington Examiner writes.

As usual Piggy you lie. Portman came to the Congress in 1993. Hardly during the Bush admin. He was in the Bush admin. And resigned because of the admins desire to increase spending and government.

Aside from other problem's with Portman's solution to budget showdowns is that it is probably unconstitutional. One of the express limitations in the Constitution is that Congress may not appropriate expenditures for he military for more than two years. Under the Portman proposal, appropriations would effectively be for a 25-year period before they zeroed out (and that is assuming that the one percent is based on the original appropriation rather than the appropriation after previous across the board cuts).

I do not know how anyone can critize whoever the Republicans pick. The current administration has no grounds to talk bad about anyone else. When your the worst ever you give up your right to say anything negative about anyone else.

Spoken like a true member of the 1%. I don't like the current administration much either, but I'm not rich enough to like the new alternative. Come on Republicans.... can you give us a viable option here please!

romney needs to pick a complete unknown, not a washington insider, because he has enough baggage.

Picking a Washington outsider -- and a complete unknown -- worked out pretty well for McCain, didn't it?

Romeny could pick Jesus and the liberals would tear him to shreads. I wont matter who it is. They have nothing to run on other than look how bad this person is.

With Christie you get both a presidential and vice presidential candidate rolled into one.

We conservatives need to tread lightly here. The liberals will keep bringing up history and experience to use against us. So what if somebody gave GWB bad advice on WMDs? These thinks happen, but those darned liberals insist on understanding history so we don't "repeat" it. How pathetic.

The man who thought up that overused bromide about understanding history and not repeating it was named Santayana. Sounds Hispanic or Muslim, doesn't it. You gonna trust anything that came out of HIS head? Middle name was probably Hussein.

Do we really care who is VP pick is? Unless it is a coal miner we are not going to trust that Mitt can understand anything that the working person deals with on a day to day basis.
