Obama announces new education program focused on African Americans

Locked in a tough re-election battle with Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama aimed to energize his core supporters – African American voters – by delivering a rousing speech and unveiling a new executive order at the Urban League’s annual convention in New Orleans Wednesday night.

The president told the largely African American crowd of roughly 3,700 people that the executive order will seek to improve educational achievement for African Americans at all levels “so every child has greater access to a complete and competitive education from the time they’re born to the time, all through the time they get a career” the president said to cheers.

An administration official tells NBC News the order will create a new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans that will “work across Federal agencies and with partners and communities nationwide to produce a more effective continuum of education programs for African American students.”

President Obama addresses the National Urban League in New Orleans, La., on Wednesday. "If you still believe in me ... stand with me," he said.

The official added that the initiative would be housed in the Education Department, which will work with the Executive Office and other Cabinet agencies to identify practices that will improve African Americans’ achievement in schools and colleges. The administration official did not yet know how much funding the program would receive but said more information would be released Thursday when the president signs the executive order.

The president has previously received criticism from some black leaders for not doing enough to help the African American community as rates for school dropout and unemployment among African Americans continue to be higher than the national numbers.

For example, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the dropout rate for African American students ages 16 to 25 was 8 percent in 2010; by comparison, white students in that age range had a 5.1 percent dropout rate. Further, the unemployment rate for African Americans is 14.4 percent, significantly higher than the national average of 8.2 percent.

Last August, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) told a crowd of Congressional Black Caucus members in Detroit, “We want to give the president every opportunity to show what he can do and what he’s prepared to lead on. But our people are hurting and the unemployment rate is unconscionable.”

Obama has in the past responded to such criticism. In an interview on BET last September he answered a question about why he didn’t create more policies specifically targeted at African Americans: “That’s not how America works,” the president replied, “America works when all of us are pulling together and everybody is focused on making sure that every single person has opportunity.”

When asked if this latest executive order is timed to mobilize African American voters ahead of the election, one White House official said it is “one more step along a path that the president has been walking.” The official cited the fact that the president enacted the Race to the Top initiative and new flexibility on No Child Left Behind, actions aimed at improving educational opportunities for all students including minorities, according to the Official.

On Tuesday, the president admitted there was still a lot more work and asked the Urban League crowd for their continued support: “If we don’t keep fighting for better jobs and a better future, who will? That’s our challenge. We don’t quit.”

From the Romney camp, spokeswoman Tara Wall responded to the speech, saying, "As black Americans, we all take pride in Barack Obama's historic election - but unfortunately his performance as president has not matched that enthusiasm."

Exit polls show that 95 percent of African American voters supported president Obama in 2008. Analysts believe he will need them to turn out in similarly large numbers if he hopes to win key swing states such as Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina.

The president wrapped up his remarks with a familiar plea for voters to turnout in November; “I still believe in you and if you still believe in me I ask you stand with me. March with me. Fight with me and … I promise we will finish what we started, turn this economy around, seize our future and remind the world why the United States of America is the greatest nation on earth.”

That is stupid. Every child deserves an equal chance. Not based on race.

President Obama has problems with the truth--specifically, he never met a lie he couldn't tell well. He has cast himself as a defender the downtrodden when he, his wife, and his children have never had to attend a public school in their lives. He even joked about using drugs with his rich white friends while attending his private school. He cares even less for African Americans than he does whites--he just sees them as a loyal democrat party voting block just like Jewish Americans! Those of you who value you churches remember this was the guy who described believers as people "who cling to their God"!

Just more demo vote buying with our taxes. Accomplish better results in education by stop paying taxes to least educated, often single women to have babies just to make more demos and crime. Never happen unless states each pass amendment to Constitution stopping the terrible waste.

            1. How much extra help do we need?! Equality is equality…let’s use the same things everybody else uses…the same programs…the same opportunities. This new program is saying that there’s something wrong with Black people so we’ve got to give them some extra help. There’s nothing wrong with us…we’re not inferior, weaker…you don’t need to give us a head start in the race…Stop treating Black people like we are an inferior race and need extra programs to achieve. We are just as awesome as any other race and we can achieve using the same opportunities that are afforded to everybody else. Don’t give ME a slave mentality —I don’t accept it!

I think White people should protest and demand the desegregation of this new program.

Its crazy to me how all these right wings ca sit here and call Obama racist but don't want to look at the statistics. Its easy for you all to say, "We're America! There should be no hyphenated Americans! We shouldn't be divided! Obama is just trying to keep us from coming together!"

Ha! You say that but look at the facts! Black unemployment is at 14.4% when the national average is just 8%! Black and Latino drop outs are at all time highs! But we're so equal and we're so united and we should all come together. The way I see it, as a Black woman, I'm less likely to get a job than 90% of you Republicans commenting on this article. My fellow African Americans are significantly more likely to not have the same oppurtuities as you to go to to college. So spare me your sappy unification crap. That means nothing to me. When are empolyment and education are statistically equal THEN you can come to me about how we're all equal and shouldn't be divided and blah blah blah.

Also, to the idiot who went on to say how the Democratic Party was historically a defender of slavery and Republicans freed Blacks and all of that. Sure, historically you're right. But what about now? Who is defending our rights now? For the last 50 years it was the DEMOCRATS who have fought for our civil rights much more than the Republicans and you know its true. Don't try to cry to the Black voters with information from 200 years ago when you know that it was the Democrats helping us through the Civil Rights movement.

And you all can sit here and question what benefits you get from being White all you want. Its called White Privilege and its REAL. There is a reason we are behind in education and unemplyment. You think its just a coincidence? Just look at Trayvon Martin!!! These problems still affect the community everyday. The deaths of our Black men by police officers happen everyday and you're gonna sit there and tell me that we're all equal!? Please, save that bull@!$%# for someone else because no one is swallowing that nonsense here.

Its about time Obama brought some light on this issue and put forth measures to help us. Its obvious that in this country I'm Black first and American second. Hence the reason I'm AFRICAN-AMERICAN.

Every child should have the same opportunity when it comes to education but the facts remain that this is not true.. My 7 yr old son has been discriminated against since 2010. you see it has nothing to do with what race he is. It has to do with who he is..My son has Asperger's and no-body wants to teach children like my son. So when I see that there is more money going to help kids who do not have any needs like it bothers me because children like my son do not always get the help they need. there drop out rate is 25% who leave before high school and another 20% for other reasons. I pulled my son out last Dec. due to the school wanting to send him to a lock-down school..have you ever seen a lock down school? I have and I wish I never saw it they where not teaching these children how to cope with there feelings or emotions they where just pushing them aside and if the child did not follow the rules then it was the cool out room for them. where they stick your child in a small room with concrete walls, no windows, a security mirror in the center of the room, and a security camera in the corner,. The rest of the school was just as bad with locked doors, and children without smiles on there faces. I took this tour so the school system did not label me as being the UN-flexible parent. I even went as far as getting a lawyer to help me change schools but found out I would have to put my son back into the school (he was only there for 21 days) that I pulled him out of to ask there board for a different school.. The schools get the most money out of kids like mine here in my state the schools get $25,850 per child for one school yr. for a Reg. child they get 1,650 dollars. Children like my son are the money bags and since my son is now home schooled by me I get nothing to help him.. This is not equal and until more parents have children like my son you will NEVER know the hurt and pain that I go through every day wishing I could do more to help him with my money stretched as far as silly putty I do not have much left over.. The help out there in the world is always the same thing over and over again. I can only do so much with when teaching due to the Gov. not helping what so ever..What I really need for my son is a teacher who can teach my son and meet his needs. But that will never happen due to the Gov.

What state do you live in? Where did you get that $1,650 figure and $23,850 for special needs. Why didn't you have an IEP? If you want your child to have more one on one you need to put him in a school that does that, not the public school. They have to offer it to you...... I don't think your telling the whole story.

Education for children improves when the parents take an interest and see to it that their children study, eat well and get sufficient sleep, it also helps to make sure they make it to school on time, the color of their skin does not matter.

There is an prevalent attitude that education is a bother among students. An army of concerned community-involved individuals will not help because the attitude is so inherently entrenched into their psyches that another approach is necessary. Imagine Obama, going into these neighborhoods, walking the streets, doing face work, rolling up his sleeves, setting an education-is-cool attitude, and becoming endeared as the education president; something a community organizer could easily do. His term has shown that fund raising, pandering, and re-election are his all. Times up, let's try an alternative president next term.

dont mean to listen to your conversation..I think mac was referring to the billions of dollars obama gave to the banks as Re-capitalizing...nationalizing would be to take control of as the 99% share holder there by deciding whom gets the loans..kind of like when the democrats forced the banks to ease its lending requirements so more minorities could get homes..opening the whole 5.1 3.1 arm product that let unqualified people in houses they couldn't afford..then as capitalism dose (like it or not) some sharp people took out loan liability insurance out on the bad assets as they knew when the arms recalculated they would foreclosure every where and the policies would pay handsomely...yes its hard to hear my liberal friends but once again a well meaning ill thought out social gov.program caused a catastrophe....but you knew that....

Unfortunately you can't fix a cultural problem from the outside. Education needs the respect it deserves in the home. If parents aren't part of the solution, the government will attempt to parent and fail.

So where was this nggr for the last 3.5 years as his base was suffering in their ghettos? He didn't care did he! Now when he needs the black vote he will shower them with all of his phony love and affection. He could not care less about you ghetto dwellers. All he needs is his big money people in Hollyweird, the UAW and the SEIU.

BTW, for you inner city educated blacks, that .5 above means 6 months!
