Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, distanced herself Tuesday from attacks on President Obama made by Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney.
Earlier Tuesday in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) convention in Reno, Nev., Romney accused Obama’s White House staff of revealing “classified material for political gain,” citing recent comments by Feinstein that appeared to support the attack.
This prompted Feinstein to say in a written statement that she was “disappointed” by Romney’s inclusion of her remarks in the speech.
Mitt Romney took aim at President Obama, calling for an investigation into leaks of classified information and criticizing him for military spending cuts at the VFW convnetion in Reno. Watch the entire speech
The leaking of intelligence information “betrays our national interest,” Romney told the VFW. “It compromises our men and women in the field… Exactly who in the White House betrayed these secrets? Did a superior authorize it? These are things that Americans are entitled to know – and they are entitled to know right now.”
Romney added that “These events make the decision we face in November all the more important. What kind of White House would reveal classified material for political gain?”
At a World Affairs Council event on Monday in Washington, Feinstein said people in the White House appeared to be responsible for some leaks of classified information.
"I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from their ranks," Feinstein said.
In seeking to clarify her remarks, the California Democrat explained in her statement Tuesday following Romney’s speech that “I was asked whether the White House might be responsible for recent national security leaks. I stated that I did not believe the president leaked classified information. I shouldn’t have speculated beyond that, because the fact of the matter is I don’t know the source of the leaks.”
She added that, “I regret my remarks are being used to impugn President Obama or his commitment to protecting national security secrets. I know for a fact the president is extremely troubled by these leaks. His administration has moved aggressively to appoint two independent U.S. attorneys. There is an investigation under way, and it is moving forward quickly.”
But Republican senators, led by Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the ranking member of the Intelligence Committee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, have said that Attorney General Eric Holder's appointment of the two U.S. attorneys to investigate the leaks is inadequate and have called for the appointment of an independent counsel.
Cornyn has said that the fact one of the prosecutors whom Holder appointed, Ronald Machen, contributed to the 2008 Obama campaign and worked on the vetting of Obama's vice presidential choices compromises his independence. Holder defended Machen saying he “has the capacity to investigate this case in a non-partisan, independent, thorough and aggressive way.”
At issue are stories such as a recent New York Times page one feature on Obama’s weighing of which al Qaida operatives to order to be killed in drone strikes in Yemen and elsewhere, and a book by New York Times reporter David Sanger, Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power, which is based on interviews with national security officials in the White House.

IT appears that many politicans consider themselves above the law..including Romney, who has no problem taking statements out of context or out right lieing about what is or is not said by Obama. Obama is at least trying to get things done. The republicans have blocked about everything that has come before congress..and they had ran their electives on jobs...well...where are the jobs,,they have brought up nothing having to do with any jobs...I am not happy with anything congress as a whole has done..since it amounts to nothing. AS for Romney..it would be great if he had any idea what the truth was and used it...but then..no republicans has so far been able to use the truth in any form.
All of congress was elected to work together....for the past 20 or more years that has not happened. What we really need is "honesty" in our government..we do not have it from either party.

Where is Romney's evidence that President Obama was personally responsible for leaking this information? Can he provide a scrap of proof to validate his wild claims? No? Certainly, there was plenty of evidence that implicated Richard Armitage for outing a CIA agent to punish the agent's spouse for being critical of the Bush administration. Similar proof should be available if Romney's assertions hold any water. If he cannot provide that evidence, then clearly Romney is lying yet again.

Sailcat - We will have to wait and see what the DOJ comes up with when the leaks investigation is completed. I doubt if they will find anything since they were appointed by Holder. I believe an Independent Counsel should have been appointed because these leaks were very serious and much more harmful to the U.S. than the so called "outing of Plame", which was investigated, at the insistence of Democrats, by a Independent Counsel.
As for Romney's evidence, I believe he was quoting Senator Diane Feinstein who stated that she felt the leaks, because of their nature, had to come from the WH Staff, she later tried to walk it back. President Obama is responsible for his WH Staff, thereby the insinuation is the one at the top has to take responsibility.

As you stated above, there was ample evidence indicating Richard Armitage after the investigation by an Independent Counsel, however, the left still keeps blaming Cheney. No one is saying Obama personally released the classified information, but if it came from the WH, which is very likely because of it's subject, then Obama should fire the individual.

Ms. Feinstein told the truth. No one with a brain actually needed her to say it out loud because we all know it to be true. Clearly someone in Obama's White House Staff is leaking this information.
For what gain is the obvious question. Clearly these leaks help the boss by making him seem tougher in foreign policy. The Stuxnet virus for example had been widely assumed to come from the US and/or Israel in 2009. No doubt Iran either knew it or at the very least assumed it. So why would anyone bother to clear it up for them by leaking the details? Only one person benefits from it and that is Obama. Unfortunately, it is very likely that harm is done to the secret agents who are now fully implicated. Iran not only has it figured out now they know who the players were.
Obama either knew of these leaks or he instructed someone on his staff to pull out the stops to make him seem a better leader but "don't tell me anything about it." (plausible deniability? right)

The intelligence leaks of this nature compromise our national security, puts our people in harms way, undermines the work of our allies, and helps our enemies. The level of security and the number of people that even knew of this intelligence immediately reduces the number of suspects.
It is a virtual certainty that someone within the Obama administration leaked the information, but the question is why, and who else knew? This situation requires the appointment of a special counsel to investigate, and the fact both sides are not demanding it proves the Democrats place the protection of their party over the truth.

Most young people of today do experiment with marijuana and drinking and that applies to your children and your family members. There is nothing wrong with a young Obama using marijuana and admitting it. He had nothing to hide and so did not hide it. Bush used cocaine which is very addictive. Bush was also a serious drinker. I respect President Obama for the hard work it took for him to get to Harvard and graduate magna cum laude. He then became a lawyer. Then was elected to the Illinois Senate. He ran for the U.S. Senate and won and now is the President of the United States. I am very proud that he is a real middle class American. He wrote several books and because of his hard work and intelligence came to be the great leader that he is now. Republicans who think Romney with his wealthy upbringing and his silver spoon life will give a darn about the middle class or poor are kidding themselves. We see time after time that the GOP is the party for the wealthy and they will continue to be only for the wealthy. Since no one knows the source of the leaks Feinstein saying she didn't know if someone on the presidents staff had released anything or not would be true. That being said Romney trying to use her statement for political gain just makes him look like a hypocrite. This is why I have a hard time believing in conspiracy theories. Washington is a sieve. Somebody is always leaking something. I don't know who leaked this particular information, but the information itself would appear to be fairly harmless, no CIA operatives outed, no undercover operations exposed, no big secrets told. This is another one of those non-issues that Romney is seeking to blow out of proportion in order to distract us from those pesky tax returns. Yep, I reread Feinstein's remarks and I can't see where she accused the White House of anything. She admitted that the leaks could be coming from the White House. She didn't say that they were. She might have gone on to say that the leaks could be coming from the Romney campaign. Just because something is possible doesn't mean that it is true. Acknowledging that something is possible doesn't make it true.
Let's get back to Mr. Romney's tax returns. I want to know why we aren't being allowed to see them. I want to know what Mr. Romney is afraid of. No matter what any of the righties say, this is indeed unusual behavior from a Presidential candidate. How can the candidate talk about transparency when he is deliberately obscuring such a significant part of who he is and how he has made his money? It is possible that he is writing off visits to sexual surrogates (hookers) isn't it? You know how that works? It's possible. Unfortunately, almost anything is possible when the records are hidden and concealed by this "transparent" candidate.

Don't worry about releasing technical details about our means and assets in the war on terror. Far more important that this Whitehouse get it's message out. We need another 10 documentaries on how Obama got Osama, with riveting detail. It isn't treason, it is necessary to keep the President in the Oval Office.

I think it's pretty obvious where this classified information was leaked from, and why. It's also pretty obvious that the current administration will block any attempt to get that information out to the public before the election.
Be your own judge. Is the Obama administration forthcoming, or obstructing? What was the motive? Who had access to information? Who stood to gain from leaking it?
