Obama says there are 'other days for politics' in mourning Colorado victims

President Obama's speech about the shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater  at a campaign rally was "awkward," says NBC political director Chuck Todd. Both leading presidential contenders are suspending advertising in the state.

Updated 12:53 p.m. - The shooting of moviegoers in Colorado “reminds us all of the ways that we are united as one American family,” President Barack Obama said Friday in remarks mourning the victims of the overnight massacre.

Speaking in Florida, where he cut short a campaign trip, the president led a crowd in a moment of silence and called for Americans to reflect on what he called a senseless act of violence.

“Even as we learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings like this,” Obama said. “If there's anything to take away from this tragedy it's the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and precious.”

Mitt Romney, speaking early Friday afternoon in New Hampshire, said: "Our hearts break with the sadness of this unspeakable tragedy. Ann and I join the president and first lady -- and all Americans -- in offering our deepest condolences to those whose lives were shattered in a few moments of evil in Colorado."

The presidential campaign was essentially put on hold after a gunman waged an assault on viewers of a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, east of Denver.

Speaking at a planned campaign rally in Bow, New Hampshire GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney set aside politics and spoke of the mass shooting in Colorardo.

Obama canceled a planned campaign stop for later Friday in Florida to return to the White House; Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama also canceled political events set for Friday afternoon. The Romney campaign canceled a planned series of radio interviews this afternoon.

“I am so moved by your support, but there are going to be other days for politics. This, I think, is a day for prayer and reflection,” the president told supporters.

Additionally, the both the Romney and Obama campaigns put a hold on airing political ads on television on Colorado for at least the weekend.

"I stand before you today not as a man running for office, but as a father and grandfather, a husband and an American," Romney said, also striking an apolitical tone in his statement. "This is a time for each of us to look into our hearts and remember how much we love one another and how much we love and how much we care for our great country."

Details from the shooting were still emerging as of late Friday morning, but White House press secretary Jay Carney said that the president was first notified of the shooting at 5:26 a.m. ET by John Brennan, his homeland security adviser. Obama called the mayor of Aurora later in the morning, and received a follow-up briefing from Brennan, White House chief of staff Jack Lew, and FBI Director Robert Mueller.

"The president orders that his administration do everything that it can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time,” Carney said in a gaggle aboard Air Force One.

President Barack Obama steps off Air Force One upon arrival at Southwest Florida International Airport July 20, 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Most political reaction revolved around expressing sympathies for the victims of the shooting.

"I am stunned and furious at the news of the shooting at the Aurora Century 16 Movie theatre this morning,” said Democratic Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter, whose district includes the site of the crime. “Colorado is not a violent place, but we have some violent people. We are a strong and resilient community, and we will lean on each other in the days, weeks and months to come.”

Few elected officials touched on the impact of the Colorado shootings on the long-simmering debate about gun control laws.

"I would say as you know the president believes we need to take common sense measures that protect the Second Amendment rights of Americans while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing laws do not get them," Carney said when asked about the impact of the shooting on the gun debate. "We're making progress in that regard in terms of improving the volume and quality of information on background checks, but I have nothing additional on that for you. This is obviously a recent event."

One of the few exceptions to that came from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a longtime advocate for stricter gun laws.

At a planned campaign event in Fort Myers, Fla. President Barack Obama steers away from politics and leads the nation in a moment of silence for the victims of the mass shooting in Colorado.

"You know, soothing words are nice, but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country," Bloomberg said on WOR Radio in New York. "No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them concretely, not just in generalities -- specifically, what are they going to do about guns?"

You want to have a positive impact, to make a difference with this drastic and costly negative in our society? Then I guess we need to recognize it as a real problem within our society and while not having to take responsibility for the problem, knowing we didn't cause it, to take some responsibility for addressing the problem ... gun control won't do that as that is just a political cop-out.

I suspect it is reasonable to assume that in each of these cases the perpetrators felt alienated from society, basically alone and not considered, unfairly left out, or however you want to describe it, and then they felt the need to strike out, hoping for the attention they felt society owed them and to really just show society. The only way to impact that is to have organizations and programs throughout society that compassionately and privately reach out to identify, understand and help. These people are not totally isolated and invisible; they have interactions, even if just few, show signs and do reach out - that is their nature.

We can continue to just chastise those with the problem, correctly feeling we are not at fault and shouldn't have the expense taken from our resources, and then we can just continue to live with these catastrophes and with always fruitlessly discussing gun control. Society has to take responsibility for it's problems and not just for offering opportunity for the successful to have substantial gains - and that isn't being "liberaL', it is being self-servingly wise. A cooperative society that serves the needs of all of it's people far out produces a competitive society that just caters to "the few". When we help those with needs and bring them up to a higher productive level, we then help all of society, making the total more productive and even producing profits for "the few".

I hate it when these shootings are politicized. But what can you say. Did you see zimmerman on foxnews.com. The guy was making his case on the hannity show. And the hannity man was asking zimmerman all these soft ball questions. Even those stumped the zimmerman sometimes so the hannity man had to answer his own questions from time to time. What kind of interview is that. No. No.

It wasn't an interview. It was just another nutcase taking the stage on the world wide tv network of crooks, cheats, and criminals. The network that brought you 911. I tell you it only encourages others who just want their time in the lime light. To be able to say whatever they want to. And when the question goes over their heads, hannity, i mean the fox news interviewer will answer the question correctly for them.

All i can say that i hope the nra, the rushbo, mr grover, & the gop & foxnews.com are feeling proud of themselves with soooo many people killed and injured. The largest number ever. They are sooo much like al qaeda. They need to keep outdoing themselves.

Based on past experience, please forgive me for not believing you won't be using this tragedy to advance your political agenda, Mr. Obama. Remember, we should never let a crisis go to waste. Perhaps there's a young black man who you could wish aloud that your son resembled. Or perhaps you could use this tragedy as an excuse to sign on to the UN gun control treaty. Of one thing I'm absolutely certain: you will find a way to blame Republicans for the events in Aurora, CO somehow someway.

But as you or anyone who chooses to make ridicules political and insensitive related accusations and remarks should probably host a Republican political rally in front of the movie theater in Aurora to advocate on behalf of the 2nd Amendment rights and gun owners everywhere. Don’t forget to invite Romney and the rest of the greedy corrupt Republican elected officials.

I would ask how ignorant can you possibly be except that you would probably take that as a challenge.

No clown, unlike you I'm a veteran who actually respects the office of the Presidency no matter my feelings towards the politics of the office holder.

And compared to the failings of the President whom occupied the White House prior to Obama I would say that "Hope and Change" has been working pretty well.

Seeing as my business partner and I just joined a collective of other small business owners to negotiate a contract with a health provider that formerly did not do business in my state, thanks to the ACA passing and being on the verge of full implementation and that this will allow us to offer expanded and more comprehensive coverage to our employees for less money I would say that for me personally it's working out very well.

Sorry my reality trumps your rhetorical, nonsensical rantings.

No, he travelled to Madrasah's in Karachi Pakistan, Hyderabad in India this most muslim city in India established in 1591 by the mulsim Mohgal leader Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, as well as the muslim country on the planet Idonesia.

Obama was FOURTEEN YEARS OLD when Viet Nam ended. Are you seriously advocating that CHILDREN should serve in the military?

And seeing as Obama was a child,in the custody of his mother and stepfather,at the time of his stint in Indonesia,NOT Pakistan you phucking idiot,I find it comical that you can make a claim that he chose to do anything.

By the way the schools he attended in Jakarta (again nitwit---that's in INDONESIA) were the Santo Fransiskus Asisi (Saint Francis Asisi) CATHOLIC School, for grades 1&2 and a part of the 3rd grade and then the Bensuki School,a public school, for the remainder of the 3rd grade and the entirety of the 4th grade.

Then he moved back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents and attended the Punahao School in Honolulu for grades 5-12.

You're a jackass of the first order and I guess I understand you choosing p*ssed off as your moniker.

You can count the number on this post that are politicking and evidently oblivious to the lives lost in Colorado through some senseless action.

They can certainly "hug" their weapons each and every night, but don't seem to be a bit concerned about the parents that no longer can "hug" their kids each and every night.

No problem with foisting a defense for the 2nd Amendment, but give it a break for just one day and foist a defense for families that loose loved ones because of warped agendas or the thrill of it all.

This social media is not doing a good job of teaching respectful debate among our children.

Like a standing president accusing a political rival of a Felony? Indicting that rivals wife because she has four helpers for her MS?

Dogs on Car Roofs? High School Pranks?

                      Leadership reflects attitude.

The only reason I'm posting is to try to get folks to understand that there is a difference between political discourse and the daily "lives" of Americans. I have no problem with differing points of view, I just think that they can and ought to be discussed in a rational environment. And I have no problem with anyone strongly believing that the leadership in power needs be changed.

I'm just concerned that our children and their children who are subject to our debates, will not always be aware that discourse may be strong but not necessarily nasty.

We may disagree, but I think we can do so without demeaning each other. Respect and understanding is what we should be teaching our kids. Just my humble opinion. That way maybe, just maybe we can all live together with differing opinions.

Once again my friend, thanks for your service. We're all getting older and just trying to make life better for our, and our brother's families.

p*ssed off, you might want to check with your state ASPCA on pet transportation laws. Because or Mitts admission of putting his dog in and tying the pet carrier to the roof of his car there has been a new law written making it unlawful. Normally a responsible person would not do such a thing but then we are talking about Romney and his condoning wife which should tell everyone that he holds little regard for animals in general. Romney views the majority of the American people in much the same way which tells you that he is very good at hiding his illegal corrupt activities like the money he stole from American workers pensions.

But then as this article goes you would make a political statement on behalf of the greedy corrupt Republican elected officials in light of such a tragedy.

My thoughts and payers go out to the families and friends.

If Obama and family are back at the White House it is for their protection. Other than that it doesn't matter where or what he is doing. Didn't know he was going to Florida not interested in his phoney comment about how now is the time Americans need to join together. We know what to do ,thank you very much. Don't know how muslims do it.

I am shocked .. but not surprised.

Vast majority of progressives posters here are posting comments of sympathy for the victims and warding off attacks from Republican tea people.

Vast majority (not all though) of Republican tea people are posting comments of attack on Democrats and Mr Obama.

                        It's vile and despicable.

But :) Keep it up. There are many independents here that have not decided who the good guys are yet. This election will be decided by them. Thank you Republicans and tea people for showing your true colours.

Keep your guns (weapons). Please don't suggest that I have to worry that everyone sitting beside me and my family in a theatre has arms.

My God, I'm thinking about an afternoon or evening of enjoyment and I have to worry about the people behind me, perhaps accidentally discharging a weapon?

By all means bring them to the theatre, if you wish, but please leave them in the vehicle. The last thing we need is someone discharging a firearm in a dimly lit theatre toward something they suspect is suspicious.

Granted, had you been in Aurora, you may have been able to dispatch the shooter. That would have been lead flying both ways, but may have saved lives. That's conjecture. I'd rather bet on the best of humanity, and this tragedy was an aberration. If not, then we have a lot more to think about than everyone arming themselves.

I want to live in America, not necessarily Tombstone or Dodge City or any of the other "wild" west towns. I'm afraid we're drifting backwards.

Hard to take after experiencing Columbine. The people of Colorado are good people and we will join together and get through this again. God bless these families.

Because it's easier to get a vote to restrict voting rights to address a non existent problem then it is to address the number of murders by people using guns, which is an existing problem. Go figure. Both involve people, only the last one is true.

Hey Dennis, I saw your Obamas speech , after the stuttering and kinda slurring words he managed to drag out some sort of sympathy if that is what you want to call it. He kinda looked a little tired. He needs a vacation. Whats if been a couple of weeks since his last vacation?

dennis, let me help you - there is no voter restrictions to legal americans casting votes and there is a HUGE problem with illegals and fruadulant democrats casting bogus votes. See?

How about some proof? Oh, there's none. Just what you clowns make up. There is zero grounds for this other then to restrict voting rights. You people don't seem to believe in the constitutional right to vote.

why dont you look back through the news around 2007 and 2008 - there were 27 states bringing suites against acorn - you know - that good honest democrat organization? for fruadulant voter registration. See dennis - you need to keep up on current events if you want to join the adults conversations - dont stay uninformed then whine for "proof" when someone corrects you on something. Its noones job but yours to find facts , nobody is required to provide you with a bibliography

                                  Maria,

First, there is no such thing in most states as a "gun permit" to buy or own a firearm. There are permits to carry a concealed pistol or revolver, but there is no requirement to get a permit to buy or own a gun. Furthermore, in many, if not most states it is legal to carry a gun in the open without any sort of permit. Restrictions on gun ownership are usually related to criminal history or mental health issues. For the bulk of people there is no more a permit requirement to buy a gun than there is to buy a kitchen knife. So your basic premise that a permit is required to buy or own a gun is incorrect.

Second, among the 320 million or so residents in the United States, there are, as I understand it, more than 200 million privately owned small arms (revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns). I have yet to hear of a law, ordinance or rule which, if it had been in effect, would have prevented the sort of massacre that took place in Colorado today. In fact, there are many instances in which existing laws were not effective in preventing violence, such as the prohibitions against minors possessing sidearms in cases where teenagers have shot people. Sweden has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world, yet one man succeeded in killing dozens of children with a rifle and ammuniction he managed to obtain. People who suggest a ban on firearms will deter killing are either living in a fantasy world, or are using the gun issue to divert attention to the real problems which give rise to extreme violence in our society. I don't believe a ban on private ownership of firearms in this country has any chance of being accepted in our lifetimes.

With almost every single one completely dismissed.

There've been, what, 9 legitimate cases of voter fraud over the last 10 years or so? Yeah, really a MASSIVE problem. See here for discussion: http://www.thenation.com/blog/167217/voter-fraud-fraud#
