Updated 2:41 p.m. - Most Americans say Mitt Romney should release more of his tax returns, according to a new poll released Thursday.
Fifty-four percent of Americans said in a USA Today/Gallup poll that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee should release additional years of tax records beyond the 2010 returns he's already released and the 2011 filing Romney has pledged to make public before the election. Thirty-seven percent of adults said Romney should not have to release more tax records.
The Obama campaign has sought to make Romney's taxes an issue in the campaign, going so far as to suggest that, in the absence of evidence, it's possible that the former Bain Capital executive might not have had to pay any taxes in a given year.

The Romney campaign has rejected that charge, and has refused to budge in its stance against releasing more tax returns. Doing that, Romney has said, would provide Democrats with more opposition research fodder.
"We've given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life. And so, the election, again, will not be decided on that," Ann Romney said of the tax returns on "Good Morning America."
Still, Republicans and conservative media outlets, fearing the collateral damage from the candidate's refusal, have joined the chorus calling for Romney to release his returns.
To that end, 30 percent of Republicans in the USA Today/Gallup survey said Romney should release his returns; 53 percent of independents want to see more of Romney's records.
The poll was conducted July 18 and has a 5 percent margin of error.

Feisty - Letterman took Romney to task last night about his tax returns. Totally skewered him. A lot of people - most in fact - know this jerk is hiding something. But, if he waits long enough the accountants can "cook the books."

I don't believe a statement should be dismissed solely based on "the source". If the statement makes sense, it should be considered. What made sense to me was who really cares about only the last two years that the person KNOWS will be under intense scrutiny? Too many questions remain about a period of time that could or could not be substantial to his campaign platform.
If, in fact, this is a man who profited greatly at the expense of the American workers who lost their jobs to outsourcing, how would he know how to create jobs here?
He argues that too many people are cashing in on the cash cow of social programs, etc. Those programs and/or loopholes are offered by our Government just like the IRS loopholes that he exploits to build and maintain his off-shore accounts.
More power to him for being in that position and for being able to find those loopholes but... why not start there in his "reform" platform?
As a person who doesn't align himself with "Party", I don't believe Obama has a real quick fix solution to any of this nightmare but I don't see Romney as anything other than a Norquist/Koch Bros talking head.
If any of these "politicians" were really concerned about the National Condition, they wouldn't be pushing backroom agendas in order to have the voters side with one party or the other. A true "politician" understands that and knows how to overcome 'the aisle' that separates them. I don't think either of today's candidates understand that concept.

Senate Republicans on Thursday killed a bill to encourage American companies to bring overseas jobs back to the United States. The bill would have stopped companies from deducting the expenses of moving workers or operations overseas from the U.S. It also would have offered a 20 percent credit for the costs of shifting workers back home. Mitt the barber may have painted himself into a corner if his tax returns show continuing salary from Bain long after he retired. He has acknowledged that he took some retirement benefits as salary for a few years, but I suspect it may be the Bain connection in his returns he doesn't want to hand over to the DNC opposition research team.
Also, the IRS can impose the "ordinary and necessary" test to executive compensation. Paying someone for not working may be hard to justify as "ordinary and necessary".

Nixon released 1969-72 and he was president from 1969-74.
Ford 0.
Carter released 1977-79 and he was president from 1977-81.
Reagan released 1981-87 and was president from 1981-89.
Bush Sr released 1989-91 and was president from 1989-93.
Clinton released 1992-99 and was president from 1993-2001.
Bush Jr released 2000-2007 and was president from 2001-2009.
Obama released 2000-2011 and has been president in name only.
In 2008 McCain released 2 as a candidate for president.

Mitt also hasn't disclosed his audit history so we don't know if the IRS has ever examined his returns. We do know that he has taken an aggressive position with the deduction of over $70,000 in losses related to his dressage horse. There is a question of whether that is a hobby or a business and whether the losses are properly deducted.

If all Romneys tax returns show are he paid no taxes in previous years even if nothing he did was illegal he'd never get elected president. Refusing to release information that any Judge, Cabinet member or high level post that by law would have to show 8 years returns under a Romney presidency is hard to defend his not doing so just because there's no legal requirement to do so.

#5 An important measure of U.S. manufacturing activity has fallen to its lowest level since June 2009.
#6 Hundreds of thousands of federal jobs at civilian agencies will likely be lost if Congress allows the automatic federal budget cuts to go into effect next year. The following is from a recent article posted on federalnewsradio.com….
#7 The teen unemployment rate in Washington D.C. right now is 51.7 percent.

Apparently liberals haven't been noticing the trends in the polls lately. Romney is gaining ground and Obama is losing. It would seem if any of these endless attacks and conquered up conspiracies were working, the polls would be going the other way. But when the latest CBS/NYT poll has the following, there is trouble ahead for the Obama campaign.
Obama Job Performance: 44% approve 46% disapprove.
Obama Handling of the Economy: 39% approve 55% disapprove.
Opinion of Obama: 36% favorable 48% unfavorable.

So the polls certainly do not suggest Romney needs to change his campaign strategy, while they are screaming that Obama must. The 3.5 years of endless blame and excuses has caught up with Obama, and he is now seen by the vast majority of Americans as acutely negative. True leaders are always positive, and to date Obama has been unable to lead.
Here's something the liberals need to stand up about and take notice. The NYT's poll this morning has Romney leading Obama by one point, but, in their disclosure about the poll, they polled 6% more democrats than republicans... meaning the polling was weighed in the democrats favor... and Romney is STILL ahead of Obama.

You think 1 poll by a newspaper in 1 city has any bearing on what the nation as a whole will do?
When statistics say that you can count 3% of the vote and predict a winner, then yes one polls can certainly be an accurate interpretation of the nation as a whole. But this was a poll conducted by left leaning news organizations with a stronger left leaning sampling, so the results are even more telling. I think Obama and all his liberal supporters should ignore the poll results, after all I would hate to see them change from what isn't working.
I'm not altogether sure it would show anything that unusual from all the other politicians. They are all a bunch of crooks. I tend to buy his excuse that it would just be political fodder to be used against him no matter how clean they are (or aren't - most people wouldn't understand them anyway). I'd much rather both sides got down to some issues instead of this incessant name calling and innuendo. This is a national security issue. He has not released even one complete return! The 2010 return he released is not complete. As president, he would have to make decisions that could affect his offshore interests/accounts. We, the people, deserve to know the facts before being asked to make a decision. When Mitt Romney took office his state was rated number 50 and when he left four (4) years later, it was number 47. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.7%. Any number below 5% is considered full employment by Economists.

I think the reason he doesn't release anymore information is because there is something there that would damage his candidacy. I'm not saying it's anything illegal, but something that would pretty much support Obama's campaign when they say that Romney "isn't the solution. He's the problem."
He probably didn't pay taxes for a few years using loopholes. It's has to be something bad. Otherwise, McCain would have picked him over Palin.
The McCain campaign in 2008, after they checked Romney's tax returns (which he handed to McCain to vet him for VP), stated that "Palin was the better candidate". Better than Romney. What does that tell you about him?

Here's a news flash for you. The people you say are upset that Romney won't disclose more returns,...well they won't vote for him anyway. Just like Obama and his transcripts. All are farts in the wind.

Why all the jobs, under Obama's watch, are all going to China, Why G.E. and it's CEO, you know, Obama's buddy, are moving all of their jobs offshore. If you want to stop having jobs moving offshore, then you have to have tax policies that rewards keeping jobs in the US and punish for moving jobs out of the country.
Here a news flash for you: Congress just voted down the "Bring Jobs Home Act" (H.R. 5542), which would eliminate the tax deduction companies use to OUTSOURCE jobs and would reward companies keeping jobs here with a 20% tax deduction. Isn't that what you're complaining about?
Guess who controls congress? If you want to complain "where are the jobs?", instead of accusing the executive branch for doing nothing, try looking at the legislative branch, whose job is to handle these things. Remember, we have three branches of government for checks and balances. It's not just the President that dictates where the jobs go. Especially when congress blocks ANY proposal that the president supports.
I suggest your write to your congress person and ask how they voted for this proposal. If they voted against it, ask why. They'll probably give you some "socialism vs. capitalism" crap answer they like to give. The real truth is that they're treating the country as a chess board to see who can win the next election.
Dave D. Bush spent over 1.5 trillion in stimulus spending most going to banks and financial institutions. Most of Obamas 780 billion stimulus went to states to boost job creation on jobs states had that were shovel ready. You seem to blame Obama for every dime even though clearly most went to help the country but don't mention Bush. I'm sure a number of companies helped by Obamas stimulus used money on foreign parts of their businesses. You conveniently for get Bush's 700 Billion dollar tarp payments went to banks with foreign operations and much of the 150 billion he gave to AIG went as insurance payments to foreign banks.
