Poll: Obama, Romney in dead heat in Virginia

President Obama’s lead in Virginia has evaporated.

A new Quinnipiac poll out this morning shows Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney tied, 44-44 percent, in the commonwealth, a critical toss-up state.

Obama led eight in the poll in March, 50-42 percent, and five a month ago, 47-42 percent.

"Virginia voters are sharply split along gender and political lines about the presidential race. The two candidates equally hold their own political bases and are splitting the key independent vote down the middle," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a press release. "One small edge that President Barack Obama has is likability. Voters have a slightly more favorable opinion of the president than they do Gov. Mitt Romney."

Obama’s approval rating in the state is just 45 percent.

One factor for the shift could be that in the last month, with the help of pro-Romney outside groups, there are more anti-Obama TV ads on in the state than pro-Obama ones. Romney and allies have spent $10.6 million during the stretch from early June through July, compared to Obama and allies spending $10.1 million.

Uh-OH!

It's only July and the trend looks really bad for the Blue Team.

You folks keep worrying about Tax Returns and Bain.

The rest of the country is worried about putting food on the table.

Romney factuality, or for a change:

"Quietly, with an unpublicized executive order, Romney abolished affirmative action in the state, only to backtrack completely when enraged minority groups found out.

He also tried to control information. He discouraged officials from talking to the media, fired almost half of the state's press secretaries and centralized control of information in the governor's office. And he tried unsuccessfully to close down the office of the state inspector general, which looks into corruption.

...That's from just his first year as governor.

Did it make it too obvious that this was nothing more than a hack job hit piece?

Holy Moley Navy/Backhouse, that has to be the quickest deflection I have ever seen!

Quite the contrary. The article says they're in a dead heat, and Backhouse is showing that they simply shouldn't be, because Romney makes Obama (for all his faults) look downright awesome.

It really depends on who shows up in November.

But many Republican-controlled states have passed strict voter ID laws, targeting many inner city voters who don't drive (thus without a driver's license), for example. Pennsylvania GOP chair bragged that with the passage of their voter ID law, they have ensured Mitt's victory in Pennsylvania - a battleground state. Pennsylvania law requires IDs with expiration dates, among other things. Most student IDs and veteran IDs have no expiration dates, they are thus excluded from voting - how evil GOP's plan is!!!!!!!!!

Many regular voters have already been stripped of their vote - based on many strict voter ID laws in GOP-controlled states.

But many such state laws have either been suspended by higher courts or been put on hold because of lawsuits.

How evil some of the GOP plans has been - reminding people of past experiences of having been disenfranchised. But we are not surprised because we all know what GOP stands for ... bigotry (pig's bigotry - GOP supports a government by pigs, of pigs, and for pigs.)

According to an estimate by New York University Brennan Law School, these state voter ID laws would disenfranchise more than 5 million voters, enough to make a difference. Fortunately, many such laws have been put on hold due to legal challenges.

Hasn't had time for Mitt's fubar to sink in yet.

He didn't release the entirety of his 2010 tax returns.

Quickest link to it was huffpo, which some might agree is a tad partisan. But you can find others.

Also, i hear whispers of 'IRS tax amnesty' for his 2009 returns. Dunno how accurate they are, but it is possible Mitt is a tax-dodger.

He dodged the draft, why not taxes too?

Sometimes the polls are skewed too. We Obama supporters do not fall for anything like that Quinnipiac poll. We stand against people like t- baggers, birthers, and Mitch McConnell, greedy Romney intent on destroying this nation. We stand for something rather than nothing.

President Obama and Romney supposedly tied how could that be? President Obama had a 12 point lead the last time. That Quinnipiac poll is just Bullsh!t.

Pigotry

Pay no attention to the Stiff Collar. We all know stiff collars can be animated with lots of rapid inconsequential commercials.

That's all he is; a nonsensical talking collar!!!

The map of Shame; voter suppression

View the Animated Map of Shame to see just how quickly many states rushed to pass government-issued photo ID laws without considering the consequences.

Do you think getting a government-issued photo ID is easy? Think again!

State voter photo ID laws and other suppressive legislation have swept the nation recently, threatening to roll back the hard-won right of every American citizen to participate freely in our Nation's democratic processes. These newly enacted laws disenfranchise many voters including minorities, low-income persons, senior citizens, voters with disabilities and students.

Restrictive voter ID laws are truly a "solution in search of a problem," since the issue they purport to address - impersonation of voters at the polls - is practically nonexient

and states already have numerous protections in place to ensure that this type of fraud does not occur and penalties in the rare event that it does. Therefore, these newly enacted voter photo ID requirements serve only to remove eligible voters from our democracy and are NOT needed to stop potential impersonation voter fraud. So why are these laws being enacted?

Our fundamental right to vote is too important for us to allow these assaults to continue.

Agree polls don't mean much this time of year. That being said, those numbers don't actually add up.

1673 totals per your post 2.3 means that (note I showed whole percentage points rounding up or down as necessary)

500 or approximately 30% of Republicans made up the sample

439 or approximately 26% of democrats made up the sample

630 or approximately 38% of independents made up the sample

104 or approximately 6% of don't know made up the sample.

Looks like they over sampled independents and sampled more republicans then democrats so the result of a tie is not surprising. A straight 33% break down of D, R and I would probably show Obama in the lead.

    • 6 votes
    #2.8 - Thu Jul 19, 2012 11:51 AM EDT

Actually, it probably is a decent poll.

I think we will find that in the "battleground" states, the results will show that the two are basically tied, with movement up & down within the margin of error of the polls.

What you will not find is a significant by Romney, ever. He just does not have that kind of support, even from his own party. The support he has is just because he is not Obama. ANYONE the Republican Party would put up would receive the support Romney has received from the GOP. John McCain could have run again and received the same underwhelming support of the GOP.

President Obama will win his re-election. If voters wouldn't replace George W. Bush, arguably one of the worst Presidents we have ever had, in 2004, they aren't going to fire the energetic, brilliant, empathetic and gifted President who succeeded him.

So Rocco what is your solution for the fighting in Syria? What should Obama do, from your posts diminishing Obama and his relevance and standing in foreign policy. Why do you think a corrupt, foreign dictator would listen to Obama to listen to reason?

Perhaps you are but I for one am not ready for another military intervention. You might find it harsh but that is another country's problem that IMO doesn't warrant an american miltary intervention or lose of US life. Not worth getting into a possible civil war, because our prescence could be a way to mend their differences as they combine to go after us.

Actually, President Obama has been doing to Syria what he did about Libya, he has gone to the UN Security council seeking support of the nations of the world to end the attacks on civilians. In case you had not been following the news, Russia and China have refused to allow any type of action against Syria to move forward.

The US did not act against Libya alone. In the modern world, no one acts alone. The shoot first, explain never GOP just doesn't get that going to war costs more than just a few missals shot from a ship. Unless we have the support of our allies, we risk losing much more than could be gained.

The only thing that has changed is the weighting in the poll. Last time 31 percent of democrats were polled, and this time 28 percent of democrats were polled. The same number of republicans and democrats were polled and 3 percent more independents were polled. I did not know that the registration number of democrats has changed so drastically in one month, but I suppose that could have happened.

Where , oh where, did they scatter to this morning? Hello? Come take your medicine.

I said wait a bit, Romney will win Virginia. Bob McDonnell has turned the state's economy around, and has turned Virginia from blue to purple to red.

What is rarely mentioned in these polls, is what Dick Morris often points out ...if you ask a spouse if he or she will still be married next year and the response is "undecided", things dont look well, do they?

Undecideds almost always break for the challenger, so these polls are more dire for Obama than on first glance.

                July 19, 2012

This tight one is starting to open up a little bit more in favor of Obama. So, my current Projection: (Currently the states that will continue to play the biggest in November are Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and Florida and Wisconsin. For now these states are remaining in the toss up status, while leaning toward Obama. However, if the election were held today, Obama would win the general.

The key months for this race are going to be September and October. And as far as the debates, Romney most likely will have a problem in this area, along with his lack of availability to the press/media.

Another issue that will hurt Romney is the battle being waged by the President to raise the taxes on folks earning more than $250,000 a year. This is something that the majority of Americans are for and Romney is against.

For now the biggest problem for Romany is his record at Bain and as Governor of Mass.

The new projected election out come totals are:

                Projected Winner Obama 293

                Projected Loser Romney 245

Don't you just love it when people who don't live in VA try to tell people who live in VA what they feel and are thinking? On another note, it was very nice of Obama to come to VA and tell us he does not have the intelligence to be elected President, as everybody knows, you can't do anything on your own, you need help from the government. Glad he cleared that one up. As he said, there are a lot of smart people out there, if you think you did it on your own your are wrong.

Not including you, apparently, since you cannot correctly quote, or understand what the President said.

How much money did Virginia get from the stimulus bill.

Of course, you will tell us that has noting to do with the economy

                  in your state.

Sandy, amazing how lefties credit everything good that happens to the Almighty God of the Federal Government, and anything bad is ....due to rich people, or greed, or something...

7 of 10 states with lowest unemployment have GOP Governors...all 17 GOP Governors elected in 2010 have lowered their unemployment rates...

Whereas free spending public employee union dominated stimulus spending NY and Cali and Illinois are doing crappy...

                  Keep denying reality, feel free.

Or it could just be like Florida when Quinnipiac had Romney up by 6 then the next month Obama was up by 4 simply because the polling sample went from more GOP to Dems.

This month's Virginia poll has more men and less Dems then the previous month poll and if you weighted the poll to reflect the demographics of the previous month then Obama would be up by 5-7%.

Traditionally Republican leaning poll puts the VA race in a dead heat. That means that Obama is still ahead in VA by a slim margin. Polls are easy to read.

By fall, Romney and the leaves on the trees will have dropped. Screaming and tap dancing don't prove that Romney's got talent. Besides, he's hiding behind the curtain and is desperately trying not to reveal himself.

Romney can't hide behind "Executive Privilege" the way Obama does to hide his involvement in Fast and Furious.

I just wanted all you libs in denial to have to read it again! And Romney hasn't even been allowed to open up his campaign warchest yet! He's going to wash over Obama like a sunami!

                        Romney 2012!
