Subscribe to RSSWASHINGTON -- In a new effort to give supporters a sense of community and urgency about the upcoming election, Team Obama is deploying the president's most personal surrogate: his wife.
The "It Takes One" campaign, which launched this morning in a web video featuring First Lady Michelle Obama, urges volunteers to focus on one-on-one engagement in their communities and to enlist new voters in the president's re-election campaign.
"Don't ever underestimate the impact you can have," she says in the video. "As Barack has said all along, it takes one voice to change a room, and one room to change a community, and one community to change the direction of our nation. It takes one and it starts with you. "
The pitch -- which contains no explicit reference to opponent Mitt Romney or to the Republican agenda as a whole -- is similar to the one that Mrs. Obama makes when she speaks to grassroots supporters around the country. But the new effort refocuses attention on the ability of existing supporters to nudge friends and neighbors to get them to the polls in November.
"That one new voter you register in your precinct, that one neighbor you help get to the polls on Nov. 6, that could make all the difference," says Mrs. Obama. "That one conversation you have, that one new volunteer you recruit, that could be the difference between waking up on November 7 and feeling the promise of four more years or asking yourself "could I have done more?"
The launch video narrated by the first lady also highlights the energy surrounding Obama's 2008 campaign. Images of his Iowa caucus surge, his election victory and his inauguration are interspersed with footage of grassroots supporters going door to door.
Mrs. Obama will publicly unveil the "It Takes One" campaign during two campaign stops in swing state Virginia on Friday. Battleground states will begin activities under the "It Takes One" banner next week.

So when we need to start raising taxes to pay for Obamacare...on activities or inactivities ...you know, those taxes in support of the public welfare which the Supreme Court said was constitutional...are we really going to tax the obese?

The ACA is good for America. I know the tea baggers don't like it, because they would then have to stop getting medical care for free off of the tax payers dime.

ACA will help the country and our deficit. Not hurt it financially in any way. We have Massachusetts as the model and the ACA addressed the cost factor that Massachusetts didn't. So going forward we will "ALL" practice personal responsibility and have health insurance or qualify for Medicaid or we will pay a penalty or tax to the IRS for being irresponsible citizens of this country.

ACA is going to ruin us. Don't forget all of the other laws tucked inside of it, such as a 3.8% sales tax on the sale of a home. The sales tax goes into affect in 2013 after Obama has either been kicked out or reelected (pretty convenient).

I can't believe some people will do anything to tear someone down, especially Michelle Obama. Seeing the level of thought that goes into most comments on political message boards, I'm struck with two questions. First, is our education system really this bad? Second, should we be reconsidering this whole democracy thing?
That aside, I'm not a fan of this "it takes one" slogan. It's so easy to joke about, even Obama supporters will be tempted. For instance:

You know, being overweight has caused more health problems - living near the beach - I get sick at the sight of young people hanging out of suits they should not be wearing. On the other hand, trying to be "skinny" causes other health problems. We, as a people, need to try and eat smarter and exercise more, and stop looking for the quick and easy way out of everything. Health costs would go down. All the fussing about Obama/Romney care would disappear.
We do need one person with a vision (aka JFK with the push to the moon) to excite first the room, then the town, then the county. IMO this would help the country and the economy as a whole. Please don't attack me for this point of view, but some constructive ideas would be interesting to read.
Hi Phine -- I hope you are well and you are in my prayers. I see you listened to Morning Joe today. There is nothing wrong with promoting physical fitness. I remember in grade school -- too many years ago -- that there was a President's fitness program. That was great.
Then came the era of "I'm OK. You're OK." Well, that's fine too. It is however government's role to promote not mandate well being. Aside from those who really suffer from a chemical/medical imbalance, physical fitness or lack of physical fitness is a personal choice -- therefore the consequences should be personal responsibility. Educate not mandate.

I agree wholeheartedly with you vision comment. I think a lot of people thought that was what they were getting 4 years ago but unfortunately that turned out not to be the case. I think there is a lot of buyers remorse out there especially with the administration's positions on illegal immigration, food stamps, entitlement reform, budgeting and debt, attitudes toward business and personal achievement etc. etc. While we may have made a mistake then in electing who we did, we need not repeat it now. We do have a choice in this.
More government is not the answer as has been painfully shown. Personal pride, hard work, personal responsibility and the personal desire for continued self improvement are what is sorely needed.
All of us have the access to good education (the unions tell as that) but not all of us take advantage of it and study hard. We all had, up until recently, the feeling that we could achieve the American Dream but increased Government control and the depressing by Government of our own initiative with the ease in collecting extended unemployment benefits, food stamps and now welfare payments is sapping our self confidence and pride. Yes we are all in this together - it just seems like some of us are more personally and financially invested in it more than others.
This feeling of personal helplessness has to end and hopefully it will this November.

Speaking of intelligence, or lack there of, I'm also struck by the total lack of comments regarding the premise of the article. The idea of "grassroots" and the it takes one campaign organized at the top by the first lady, seems to be an oxymoron. But, then again, it does seem that Obama's grassroots supporters need to be told what to think.

I wonder what their response will be when Romney's forced to show tax returns other than the 2 years he knew would be released and they show he's one of the 48% who paid no taxes? As his father said, anyone can release 1 or 2 years returns they know they'll have to show to look good so he provided 12 years returns. Every presidential candidate since has provided at least 8. Romneys dads average rate was almost 37%, his son's on doctored returns was 14.5%. I'd bet good money he paid no taxes some if not all other years.
