Romney tried to carefully craft his statement.

Romney said the president gave money to “the businesses of campaign contributors.” In a highly technical sense, because Doerr is an important partner at Kleiner, he is somehow related to Fisker, but it is a stretch to say it is his “business.” In fact, Ray Lane, who contributes mostly to Republicans, is the key Kleiner partner on this deal. Moreover, the money was raised before Obama became president.

Romney said Obama gave “$500 million in loans to a company called Fisker” — but it was a loan originally submitted under the Bush administration for a Bush administration program. He also said “they make cars now in Finland” --technically true, but in a way that suggests the taxpayer money went for that purpose, rather than for jobs and work in the United States.

Finally, Romney makes the leap that because of the “crony capitalism” — not proven — no jobs will be created. The company says jobs have been created, though the venture is still highly uncertain.

Romney’s phrasing has too many weasel words. An ordinary listener would believe that Obama paid off a contributor to build cars in Finland with U.S. taxpayer money, with no hope of U.S. jobs being created. But the Kleiner partner behind the deal mostly backs Republicans, and the U.S. loans were used to create jobs in the United States.

We usually give some credit for a semblance to the truth, but the net effect of Romney’s words are too much.

Mitt Romney probably thinks he's still in the corporate where if anybody asked a question he didn't want to answer, he could just say "No comment" and that would be the end of it. That doesn't work in a presidential campaign, but his favorite response to almost every question is still the equivalent of "No comment".

Politically, the motivation is clear. Every time he takes a stand on something, or reveals something from his past, or defines himself in any way, he risks alienating somebody who dislikes or disagrees with that stance or definition. He wants to keep himself as mercurial as possible to remain in consideration by the most people, and then rely on attacks on Barack Obama and an anti-Obama vote to win the day.

Politically, the Obama team realizes this and so their strategy is to fill the void and define Romney in the worst possible light to disqualify him in the minds of voters.

It all makes sense politically, but it's all rather pointless and depressing if you're one of the few voters who would rather know where the candidates actually stand on issues and what their ideas are for confronting the problems the nation faces.

Rmoney CANNOT release his tax returns because of the damning evidence in them. He HAS to release them if he wants any kind of shot at the White House. He is screwed.

Maybe next time the RWNJs will vet their candidate a little better, and not just go for the one with the most bags of money.

My guess is that the Obama folks know exactly what is in the unreleased Romney tax returns. There are so many regulatory filings that are required for the sort of quasi-legal tax evasion that Romney not only engaged in, but set up for others, that the paper trail is huge.

Remember that in the tax return released, Romney was "caught" with a Swiss bank account and transferring money into his wife's name. There is a huge liklihood that there is even more damaging in the unreleased tax returns and the Romney folks know it.

Why do pollsters disagree so much?

There is certainly some disagreement – even in final polls just before an election, but when you average all of the polls, you tend to get a better overall picture – probably because you are then greatly enlarging the size of the 'sample', thus minimizing the 'margin of error'.

One of the best sources in this regard is Realclearpolitics.com, which is an 'average of the polls'. Their accuracy over the last two Presidential Elections (2004 and 2008) has been quite good – beating all of the major pollsters, although they do have a slight Democratic bias.

One caveat that needs to be made with regard to Realclearpolitics.com, however, is that in the process of averaging polls, they 'mix apples and oranges' to some extent, which distorts reality – For example, they may combine some polls of 'All Adults' with polls of 'Registered Voters', and other polls of 'Likely Voters'. This can result in significant errors when estimating an upcoming election because Pollsters recognize that polls of 'All Adults' are typically biased towards Democrats by about 7% (when compared with actual election results), and polls of 'Registered Voters' are also biased in favor of Democrats, but with a smaller margin of about 4% (see link below for an explanation). All major pollsters recognize that polls of 'Likely Voters' are the best indicator of election results, but most of them don't switch to 'Likely Voters' until about a month before the elections – to avoid an embarrassing result when their final poll is compared to actual results..

If you look at the poll average issued daily by Realclearpolitics and make the adjustments for 'Adults' and 'Registered Voters', you actually will find an amazing consistency among pollsters. For example, on July 17, 2012, the Realclearpolitics' average of 'Likely Voters' polls shows Romney with a 2% lead, and if you 'adjust' the polls of 'Adults' and 'Registered Voters' for the average bias in those polls, they would also show Romney with about a 2% lead over Obama, even though their overall average favors Obama by about 2% because of the 'Adult' and 'Registered Voters' mix.

Of course, these polls change constantly, and we'll get a much clearer picture as the election approaches.

One last point for those who want to make a 'guess' as to the favorite at any point in time is the 'adjustment' for 'Undecided Voters', which most pollsters say are about 7% of the electorate at this point in time. Studies have shown that when there is an Incumbent running for election, most of them 'break for the challenger' by anywhere from 65% to 85% (see link below)- typically they are 'Undecided' because of dissatisfaction with the Incumbent, but just haven't made that final commitment to vote against them. If this holds true in 2012, then that could add anywhere from 2% to 5% to Romney's total . At this point in time, it appears that Obama could be in serious trouble.

While Romney deserves credit for making Bain Capital a success (if one can call it a success to purposely bankrupt profitable companies in order to buy other companies), it wasn't his money he was risking; it was the money of those who invested in the endeavor. Romney didn't use his own money for anything at Bain Capital nor at any time did he risk anything except the possibility of Bain not succeeding but failure would have had no impact because Romney was guaranteed his money.

And if you claim they were blocked by the filibuster, these are tax issues that can be passed through reconciliation (the way Bush did it), and so would only require 50 votes in the Senate (VP casting the deciding vote).

As ridiculous as this is, this is something Romney needs to do or it will haunt him through the whole election cycle. It's ridiculous because through the course of history only 2 presidents have released their tax returns for years prior to their candidacy. Perhaps he could do what Ford did and release a summary of his tax filings although that might just exacerbate the howls from the left.

If I were him I would release 3 more years -- making the total 5 years worth of returns -- and when the left inevitably and reflexively cry for more -- they won't be able to help themselves -- Romney can say "See! I've gone above and beyond and still it's not enough. I gave 5 years and now they want more. If I give them that, they will want even more. Where does it end? I've given more than enough and am not going to participate in this ridiculous partisan Democratic snipe hunt." Taxable income is defined by the IRC as "income fromall sources, unless exempted, less allowable deductions from income" and

Net worth is defined as "a persons assets less their liabilities" and

It is been paid for by the private sector in conjunction with the city government. Why just yesterday the wingnuts couldn't line up fast enough to defend the 'honor' of their precious Bainer Boy. Get this,...they were using polls to show how viable Romney is as a candidate (rather than address the complete mismanagement of his campaign, which was the topic of the poing).

All the polls tell me about this 'close' contest with President Obama is that

1. some need it to be a horse race to keep political junkies like us tuned in

2. The net of people polled isn't being cast very far or wide

With coffee in hand, he decides to share with the world the virtues of being a self-made man. This works in part because the city exerts very strong pressure on developers and companies in return for granting community zoning approvals for new buildings. This isn't an example of an altruistic private sector, but of one that knows how to keep government (and thousands of community activists) happy. So, in other words, the private sector is helping out because of government regulations.

This also works because these company's top executives live and work in NYC. They have a vested interest in a nice environment. A factory or call center in Nebraska, but owned by a NYC-based company, isn't going to be as likely to fund expensive new parks and public spaces.

Finally, Mayor Bloomberg himself gives millions of dollars to causes around the city. He's actually a billionaire who understands the concept of noblesse oblige.

About the tax returns, here's how I see it ...

Romney has complied with the law and is under no obligation to release further returns. However, this goes against the common precedent set by all other people who have run for president.

So what, you ask? The problem Romney has is it APPEARS shady. Do I think he did anything wrong? No. The returns and whatever is in them are almost certainly perfectly legal. If they were not, the IRS would have done something. I suspect that, if released, Romney's tax returns will paint a very negative picture of him, despite being perfectly legal ways to reduce taxes and manipulate his own money.

They may, though one will never know unless released, reveal he hasn't been totally honest about something. I'm not saying the returns will show Romney has lied. I'm saying that by refusing to release the tax forms he is inviting all sorts of speculation and he has to deal with the situation he himself is creating.

Draw your own conclusions, but I think Romney is facing a choice of not releasing the returns and having people think he's hiding something, or release the returns and have people see something he knows will look very bad. He'll do whichever has the least negative impact.

The myth that the President said unemployment would be at 6% has been proven to be false. An advisor made a projection based on data they had. THEY DIDN'T know at the time HOW DEEP THE HOLE WAS.

So to use your logic that a Presidential adviser's projection was off by over 25% (8.2% vs below 6% by 2012Q2) why then should I believe the projections for PPACA, in fact why should I believe any projections from this Administration.

Rant and Rave? The President used this forecast to sell a 800B spending bill. I would say that's pretty significant. I only objected to you calling the projection a myth, rather than a lousy projection. If someone sold you a variable rate mortgage and said in a couple of years the rate will be 6% and it turns out to be 8% would you blithely write it off as being a fluid situation? I know if my company projects 5% revenue growth and we only make 3% my salary and bonus are affected. Maybe Obama should put his man pants on and stop whining about getting held to prior statements.

I listened to Romney's press secretary over the lunch hour on the Andrea Mitchell show. The press secretary's name is Andrea Saul, WOW!!!!!!!! The word that came to mind listening to her was: braindead.

Technically, I see a legitimate argument about Romney's tax returns. Why doesn't he bite the bullet and let us see them??? If he is going to be "tough on China" and browbeat the Iranians on the nuclear question, how come he isn't brave enough to just release his tax returns??? Trust is key to leadership, and without trust you are just an unpopular figurehead.

Now, to those who say that Obama has no record to run on, I disagree. This guy enacted health reform (whether you like it or not), repealed DADT, re-regulated the financial industry, passed a stimulus that helped the economy get out of the recession, and has presided over nearly 30 months of continuous private sector job growth. And if anyone wants to point out of the abysmal jobs report two weeks ago, let me remind you that the private sector had created 176,000 jobs, but only a net of 84,000 because 92,000 PUBLIC SECTOR workers had been laid off. So, if we had been giving aid to the states, the unemployment numbers would be much better than they are now.

Now let's focus on Romney's "formula" for economic growth. According to his 59 point plan and all the statements on his policies, he would cut taxes by 20% across the board (although the Tax Policy Center stated that he would raise taxes on those making under $30,000); he would eliminate progressive taxes like the estate tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax; he would endorse the Ryan budget, which cuts $3.3 trillion from the very domestic programs that we should be investing more in, like education; he would extend the costly and regressive Bush tax cuts; he would expand defense spending and nullify ALL of the defense cuts scheduled; he would privatize Medicare; he would gut crucial regulations, among them Dodd-Frank. The total fiscal cost for Romney will total to around $10 trillion or more, even if he accepts the Ryan budget, which cuts taxes by around $4.6 trillion. As for economic results, the economy may either fall into another recession or limp along until the mid-to-late teens, where it will suffer greatly due to the added debt burden caused by the Romney fiscal policies. In short, Romney will be both an economic and a fiscal disaster for this country; Obama is MUCH better compared to him.

Once again they are desperately trying to twist and distort this issue. THE ISSUE IS NOT what the President did or did not accept. That is irrelevant. THE ISSUE IS THAT MR. ROMNEY REFUSES TO BE HONEST WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! Even his fellow Republicans are urging him to come clean!

The really stupid part of what Obama said regarding "somebody helped you along the way" is that the prisons are full of convicted felons who had access to the same roads and infrastructure as successful people.

On average, I bet that those felons (except the white collar ones) didn't have access to the same infrastructure as "successful people." On average (and everything must be looked at as averages), more successful people probably went to better quality public schools and had access to better libraries, parks, etc....

Ol_Doc: Before you disagree and claim facts I have a suggestion - check your facts first.

1) You blame Deregulation of Wall Street for our economy. Try blaming the federal government who created the housing bubble by forcing banks to lend money to people who did not have the means or ability to pay it back. Wall Street did not cause the economic collapse. Try doing a little research first.

2) You blame "two unfunded wars". Surprisingly I will agree with you that we should not have gone to war without a means to pay for it but the "wars" cost a little less than $100B a year so don't blame "the wars" for the debt. Yes it was about $1 Trillion over 10 years but Obama has borrowed $6 Trillion over his term so don't blame the wars for Obama borrowing $6 Trillion.

3) You blame Bush tax cuts for the debt. Ignorant is all that is. It is mathematically impossible for a tax cut to cause debt. The debt is caused by spending money you don't have. That is like a family making $40,000 a year and spending $40,000 a year. If a person gets a pay cut and now the family only makes $35,000 a year THAT is not causing debt. Causing debt is when this family decides to continue spending $40,000 (or even $50,000) a year when you don't have it. Then the wife starts to spend $60,000 a year and tells the husband to get a 2nd job and make another $20,000. He says he can't and then the wife says that NOT taking the 2nd job is putting the family in further debt. That's nonsense and for you to use that argument is, well, further proof of ignorance.

3) Medicare Part D (unfunded). Well, you are correct there (but a broken clock is right twice a day too). That is another entitlement program that is not funded and is breaking our economy. Medicare Part D needs to be cancelled as you suggest. We can't afford it.

So I come back to the request to show tax records has no benefit. It is asking Romney to "prove" he has done nothing wrong but will be used simply to distract from the failed policies of Obama. This election is about the economy - period!! And you wanting to find SOMETHING to talk about besides the economy confirms the Democrats are running scared.

Obama CAN'T run on his policies and performance since he has failed on any and every scale so the only option is "distraction". Sorry, we are not playing that game. The debate is about the economy and ONLY the economy. Let's see how well Obama can explain his dismal economic record.

1) You blame Deregulation of Wall Street for our economy. Try blaming the federal government who created the housing bubble by forcing banks to lend money to people who did not have the means or ability to pay it back. Wall Street did not cause the economic collapse. Try doing a little research first.

Actually, the housing bubble was caused by a lack of regulations which allowed businesses to give subprime mortgages and them sell them as "AAA" investments to investors in numerous other financial institutions. Now, since Wall Street had no regulations and consisted of a few large banks, not to mention the fact that banks were now both holding deposits and making risky investments and bets, the crash of the housing market dragged down Wall Street and the global financial industry.

2) You blame "two unfunded wars". Surprisingly I will agree with you that we should not have gone to war without a means to pay for it but the "wars" cost a little less than $100B a year so don't blame "the wars" for the debt. Yes it was about $1 Trillion over 10 years but Obama has borrowed $6 Trillion over his term so don't blame the wars for Obama borrowing $6 Trillion.

The cost of the wars will be around $2.4 trillion by 2017, according to the CBO. The deficits were also around 10-20% of the Bush deficits. In addition, Obama did not borrow $6 trillion; he borrowed around $4 trillion, since Bush's last budget was 2009. In addition, Bush had a relatively better economy than Obama, so the idea of him running deficits during an okay economy is damaging. Most of the borrowing under Obama has occurred because of the recession and because of the forced extension of the Bush tax cuts.

3) You blame Bush tax cuts for the debt. Ignorant is all that is. It is mathematically impossible for a tax cut to cause debt. The debt is caused by spending money you don't have. That is like a family making $40,000 a year and spending $40,000 a year. If a person gets a pay cut and now the family only makes $35,000 a year THAT is not causing debt. Causing debt is when this family decides to continue spending $40,000 (or even $50,000) a year when you don't have it. Then the wife starts to spend $60,000 a year and tells the husband to get a 2nd job and make another $20,000. He says he can't and then the wife says that NOT taking the 2nd job is putting the family in further debt. That's nonsense and for you to use that argument is, well, further proof of ignorance.

Actually, tax cuts do cause deficits. Tax cuts subtract from revenues, and that adds to the shortfall because even though outlays stay the same, revenues go down. The Bush tax cuts cost around $4 trillion over a decade, reducing revenues and is a large causer of our deficits, according to numerous budgetary agencies.

3) Medicare Part D (unfunded). Well, you are correct there (but a broken clock is right twice a day too). That is another entitlement program that is not funded and is breaking our economy. Medicare Part D needs to be cancelled as you suggest. We can't afford it.

It's probably a tough concept for a lot of people on this board, but the guy was in private business and did nothing illegal.

Nobody said he did anything illegal, although he MIGHT be in trouble with the law for lying to the SEC if he really wasn't the president, CEO, and chairman of the board of Bain Capital as he said he was in the papers he filed. Lying to the SEC is a crime. Lying to the American people is not. My guess is that Mitt committed the second offense regarding his claims of non-involvement with Bain, which is immoral but not a crime.
