Romney faces growing conservative drumbeat to release tax returns

The drumbeat for Mitt Romney to release additional years of tax returns is growing louder -- not just from President Obama's campaign, but also from conservatives who seem to worry about the political toll of the presumptive GOP nominee's refusal to do so.

The Associated Press reported that Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) called on Romney on Tuesday to release more of his tax returns beyond the 2010 forms he has already made public, and the 2011 returns Romney has pledged to release.

Perry had been among the conservatives to attack Romney over his personal finances and record at Bain Capital during the Republican presidential primary earlier this year. Another of Romney's former primary opponents, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, also told Politico on Tuesday that Romney should release additional returns.

The former Massachusetts governor has resisted releasing additional years of tax data, arguing that it would provide the Obama campaign with fodder to mine for political attacks.

"In the political environment that exists today, the opposition research of the Obama campaign is looking for anything they can use to distract from the failure of the president to reignite our economy. And I’m simply not enthusiastic about giving them hundreds or thousands of more pages to pick through, distort, and lie about," Romneytold National Review Online in an interview today.

But the editors of the conservative magazine joined the chorus demanding Romney release more returns.

"Romney argues that whatever he releases will not be enough to satisfy the Obama campaign and its factota in the media, who are, once again, proving their bias and double standards. Romney is right, but he should release the returns anyway. Let them go fish," the magazine said in an unsigned editorial.

Romney has given no indication that he would reverse his decision and provide additional tax data. In the meanwhile, the Obama campaign released a new television ad on Tuesday speculating that there might have been a year in which Romney paid no taxes at all.

Discuss this post

I think it would be much more interesting to see Obama's college transcripts and application. LOL

We all know he stated he was a foreign applicant. Why else is he trying to hide it. I wonder if he was able to beat out last in class Al Gore?

Why are libby's so obsessed with what Romney does with his money rather than what Obama does with OUR money?

But anyhoo - how interesting that there seem to be no democratic drumbeat for Obama to do something, anything about the fact that the GDP was just downgraded to 1.1%.

No dem drumbeat about african american unemployment at 14%, or the fact that real wages are crashing down.

Nope, instead we get a certain dem senator, heading up the Disclose Act who had to leave the Senate proceedings to attend, wait for it...a fundraiser.

Fantastic, right Drive By?

Look, I know that by nature, conservatives are not very curious, but REALLY, aren't you just the teenie weenie bit curious as to what Romney has on his tax forms, especially those years he was raking in so much Bain money he couldn't find enough tax dodges for it? If you want to ferret out welfare queens, why not Wall Street welfare queens?

'Cause on Red Sox and Spanky's, the headline apparently reads "Obama faces growing conservative drumbeat to release college transcripts" and the article is about Rick Perry and Ron Paul and the editorial staff at the National Review demanding to know how he got into Harvard Law.

On mine, though, it says something else. Or maybe, as NoJoe has frequently suggested, I have a reading comprehension problem?

What difference does it make what Obama's transcripts are? The fact that he was a LAW PROFESSOR and led the Harvard Law Review means that those grades must have been pretty good as they don't allow just anybody to do either of those things. Obama has been President for nearly 4 years and whatever grades he got were irrelevant however his tax returns might give us an idea how he handles money and his attitudes toward fairness in taxation. Romney should be held to the same scrutiny. Crap that doesn't matter the GOPTP get pushed out of shape ad nauseum but important stuff doesn't matter.

Obama doesn't seem to want to disclose his college and law school records

How do you know Spankster? Can you come up with a video link or a verifiable quote where he expressly refuses to comply with an explicit demand for transcript disclosure? Be a good fellow and help us out here won't you then? There's a good chap.

How are Obama's transcripts relevant to this case "counselor"? Be specific.

Even if Obama's transcripts are deliberately withheld can you reliably prove some loss due to it? What material harm have you suffered? You know the law principle of material harm dontcha' Spanks?

Regardless why don't you FOIA the records and furnish them to Fox "News"?

If some malfeasance is exposed in Romney's tax dealings then I would call that deliberate attempt to deceive wouldn't you Spanks? I want to know my President didn't pull tax evasion gymnastics when I'm ponying up the full boat.

Know what I mean Spanks?

Perhaps Bain should release their board minutes from 1999-2002 to see if the CEO and sole shareholder Willard really did have NO role in what happened at Bain.

Wait, I know it's Fast and Furious disclosure, cause you know in '08 Obama was all over Bush about the assertion of same.

Even Issa admitted that he has no evidence that Obama or Holder were aware of Fast and Furious when it was happening. The Fortune magazine article showed what a non-scandal F&F really is. So Spanky, do any Republicans have any sense of shame over exploiting the grief of Officer Terry's family to score cheap partisan points? If we trusted tax cheat Geithner, I think we an trust Romney much more.

You gcan Google it on the www.washingtonpost.com ›

Mr. Geithner "came clean" only when he was caught, first by an IRS audit that found he owed Social Security taxes for 2003 and 2004 and then when additional tax liabilities for 2001 and 2002 were discovered after his nomination. He has been praised for repaying these additional taxes for the earlier years, which apparently may not have been required under a statute of limitations, but this raises another question: Why didn't he voluntarily correct his 2001 and 2002 taxes once he found out that he had made the same error in 2003 and 2004?

Good night, going to see a show at the Ship's Theater.

That's how clueless Romney is. He has Limbaugh dictating his campaign now. And we all know the kind of advice Limbaugh is going to give.

I do hope the people of Israel and Poland know about Mitt assaulting a classmate because he didn't like the length of his hair. His classmate was different. I do hope the people of Israel and Poland know about Mitt getting rich while working people lost their jobs, their pensions and their life savings.

I do hope the people of Israel and Poland know about Mitt and his cronies and supporters not seeing our president as a real American, with American values. That's how they see all Democrats.

After all, this isn't something new to the people of Israel and Poland, considering their histories in Poland and Germany.

We have a huge propaganda machine here in America, dividing us all into real Americans and fake Americans. And Mitt has chosen to stick with Limbaugh, an uneducated clueless racist.

We're seen this movie before. Poles and Jews. I can't think of one reason why these people would like Mitt, unless he proclaims that he wants to bomb Iran. Yeah, that'll go over real well Mitt. Nothing like promising a war to the people of Poland and Jews. It's what the neocons want, and they are Mitt's closest advisers.

The Presidents college records have nothing to do with the President ability to be President.

Yes, typically college records do offer insight to the intellect, discipline, and philosophy of a candidate. I think the right is hunting for essays - signs of a liberal philosophy. This is moot, really, since the President has made clear his liberal and social philosophy in his public life and Presidency thus far. They're also looking for the application to see under what circumstances President Obama got into a prestigious school. Like Governor Romney, if records are off limits the people will wonder, rumors will fly and conspiracy theories and distractions will form.

Willard's lies and deceit on his record is important as to Romney ability to serve.

This is an example of the distraction and speculation that comes. If Governor Romney releases additional tax returns we will probably find out that he made a ridiculous amount of money and paid a low effective rate. We already know that though so this hoo-hah is a bit futile as well.

Everyone grasping at straws. I understand how both sides would resist these requests on principal alone, but should fess up anyway so we can move on.

ever had a successful business man serve as President. Look at Hoover and Bush.

Sorry, Job 1, I don't think President Bush was every entirely successful in his business endeavors.

Obama Has To Learn How To Be An American

Romney Says Obama's Policies Are Extraordinarily Foreign

    Shame. Shame. Shame.

That's what the GOP does. They go out of their way to look for reasons {excuses} to hate people. Over and over and over and over and over and over. But hey, this is the same group of losers who fought a war in Iraq because ... well, who the hell knows why.

Why won't Willard follow the same standard set by Senate GNOPer's?

    From my very own Senator Dick Durbin;

Right now, he has failed to disclose information which every candidate of both political parties running for president has made over the last thirty-six years.

And I might say to my colleague, Senator Kyl, if we have one year’s income tax, even two year’s income tax from Mitt Romney that fails to meet the minimum requirement that Republican Senators insisted for every Obama nominee for the cabinet that they had to produce, so it’s a double standard

Unless of course you have something to hide...

[...anyone care to advise us why the law requires only the release of two years?]

Wow...just...WOW. You'd think a "big brained" tea partier like yourself would want to know if his candidate is evading taxes, or avoiding the SEC...

Anyhoo...Seems McCain got a wiff of 23 years of Romney's tax returns in 2008 as a candidate for VP...THEN PICKED PALIN...OUCH!...now THAT'S gotta tell you something, right "counselor"? But you're not too bright, afterall, so I understand if you can't make the obvious connection.

But as you say, "counselor"...Romney doesn't have anything to hide, right?

    Sure he doesn't.

Or, we could go back to how you were going to provide us with the amount of jail time Mittens could face if he, indeed, did commit a felony...remember?

You were going to enlighten us by putting that "big brain" of yours to work.

But I understand if you don't see these posts, after all, you have me on ignore, right Spanky?

And as far as being bored, I can see that...business is a "bit off" in SD lately, huh...so I've read. And I've noticed that you've been spending a lot more time around the water cooler, so to speak. But that's ok...you could always fall back on your job as pivot man in the conservative circle jerk.

Spanky: good thing no one uses your legal expertise on FEC filing requirements. A simple Google of the term "Presidential Tax Returns" would reveal that there is no legal requirement for tax return disclosure.

However, since Mitt Romney is supposed to be an above board kind of guy AND his father, George Romney, set the standard of 12 years by saying to the effect that one or two years could be a fluke, it does beg the question of why doesn't Mitt Romney bite the bullet and release the returns. The longer he waits, the more deceptive he looks.

If you are so bored, try flipping on Fox News for a while. I always get at least a chuckle and sometimes real out loud laughs from watching them. If you prefer radio, I'm sure you can find repeats of Limbaugh's comedy routine available on line.

        Romney reminds me of Nixon.

His Bain experience...Americans don't deserve to see his tax records dating back to 1999 when he supposedly left Bain (but then attended board meetings and conference calls).

His Governor years...Romney "lost" state computer hard drives before leaving office. Governor Romney and his wasteful leadership felt the state should spend money to replace computers that were only 2 years old, despite having a lease for another year. Typical of Romney, spend taxpayer money to cover up his records.

It really is too bad Nixon had to be such a bad politician, he would have gone down as one of the great Presidents. From reopening relations with China, beginning the thaw for the cold war by negotiating with the USSR on nuclear weapons, starting the EPA, ending the war in Viet Nam, preventing the middle-East from becoming a permanent war zone.

Nixon's success would have prevented the eventual demise of moderates in the Republican Party.

Not all Nixon did was good, yet much he did was not bad.

His main failure was to surround himself with people who did not know that there are limits to what you can do in government. His group of advisors truly thought they could do anything they wanted to do.

I noticed a recent Obama tv add refering to Romneys mones issues. It uses quotes from disserent sources ie: Boston Globe, NYT etc, it gives months and years of these quotes, and was approved.. One quote comes from VANITY FAIR and it quotes "tax haves like Bermuda" Its dated AUG 2012. Last i checked its still JULY!!. Time Travel, Magic, Illusion or just more smoke and mirrors. Really!????

Would you like to read the entire article? Here it is:

          http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/08/investigating-mitt-romney-offshore-accounts

By the way, magazines have been coming out days or even weeks before their "cover date" for as long as I can remember.

Sorry to burst your conspiracy theory, but hey - I'll give you points for at least paying attention to detail!

Interesting thing we have going here. Romney, a relative political amateur who isn't a career politician only because he tends to lose campaigns, doesn't see the danger in remaining the mystery man. His party members, however, do see the danger. So now they are pushing him to give in and comply with his hostile takeover target - oops, sorry, slipped in a little predatory cowboy capitalism speak - comply with his political opponent's demands. And to Romney, that's weakness that potentially impacts the deal - oops, meant the campaign.

He is running on his business acumen forgetting that there are a lot of good businessmen out there, voters are only interested in his business ethics and principles since that will be important if he hopes to be President. OPPS, you mean there is more to business than JUST MAKING MONEY??? Romney is a fool to try to cover up his track record, good or bad. As usual the cover up is worse than the crime!

Actually, the coverup IS a crime.

If Romney is willing to hide information where there is no crime (the GOP hopes) then you have to wonder what will he try to cover up when there is a crime. We've already had one Tricky Dick in the Whitehouse, we don't need a Tricky Mitt.

Well, to be fair to the guy, hiding stuff on the campaign trail is hardly criminal. Dumb, arguably. But not criminal.

Don't see me coming to Romney's defense often. He is the most integrity-lacking presidential nominee from either party I remember ever seeing - and that's saying a lot, obviously. Politicians are pretty bad, the really good politicians who reach this level are really bad, and Romney has the hardest time with the truth of that whole bunch - Nixon included. Actually, JFK and HW Bush exceed Nixon, too, in my view. But with all of them, there is always a reason behind the lie. Romney lies when he has nothing to gain from the lie, and when he has to know it's going to be seen as a lie almost immediately after, and still does it. To me, that seems pathological.

But certainly nothing criminal in keeping his other year tax returns close to the vest.

Mitt must be hiding something from those of us who would give him a chance. What the Obama campaign or the "liberal" media do is unimportant (to his supporters) and he knows it. Mitt, did you donate money to homosexuals and/or abortion providers or something? Just what are you afraid of?

conservative magazine had "an anonymous writer" asking for the returns

College transcripts are not normally released. If they were, Bush Jr would have never been president. On the other hand tax returns are. For that matter, Romney has based his campaign on his business experience ect. and they should serve as proof.

He released them to McCain and was dropped like a hot potato. He testified under oath that he flew to board meetings for a company he had no dealings with? He lied, period. Not only did he lie, he lied under oath. If he is now claiming he had nothing to do with Bain during that time period, then he should be convicted of perjury at the very least.

he says he's proud to be wealthy but affraid to show how wealthy he is or isn't?

or maybe he doesn't want to get in the reduce taxes for wealthy when he doesn't pay taxes on his abundance of monies?

either way he's typical, waiting to the very end so he looks like a real fool.

whoever's running this campaign is the fool.
