Romney sharpens tone as he tries to pivot to offense

IRWIN, PA -- Mitt Romney sought Tuesday to pivot to offense versus President Obama with a fiery speech at a rally here accusing the president of "crony capitalism" and a fundamental misunderstanding of business.

After having spent nearly a week on the defensive over his refusal to release more than two years of tax returns and amid a barrage of criticism of his tenure at Bain Capital, Romney ripped into what he said was a telling remark about Obama's view of government.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrives on stage before speaking at a campaign rally at Horizontal Wireline Services July 17 in Irwin, Pa.

The president said Friday at a campaign event that, "If you’ve got a business, you did not build that -– somebody else made that happen," in a larger monologue about the importance of government support for business.

"That somebody else is government in his view. He goes on to describe the people who deserve the credit for building this business and, of course, he describes people who we care very deeply about who make a difference in our lives, Romney said, referencing teachers, firefighters and other public workers.

"But you know, we pay for those things, alright; the taxpayers pay for government. It's not like government just provides those to all of us and we say oh thank you government for doing those things no in fact we pay for them and we benefit for them and we appreciate the work that they do and the sacrifices that are done by people who work in government," Romney added. "But they did not build this business."

The presumptive GOP nominee then launched into a list of historic American entrepreneurs to prove his point. Those figures, Romney argued, built their empires through their own efforts.

"The idea to say that Steve Jobs didn’t build Apple. That Henry Ford didn’t build Ford motor," Romney said, continuing to list other prominent American companies. "To say something like that is not just foolishness, it’s insulting to every entrepreneur, every innovator in America, and it’s wrong."

Buoyed by a crowd of roughly 1,000 supporters here in a deeply Republican part of the state, Romney came out swinging this afternoon, hitting the president with a charge of "crony capitalism," in the case of Fisker automotive.

"I'm ashamed to say that we're seeing the president hand out money to the businesses of campaign contributors. When he gave money -- $500 million dollars in loans to a company called Fisker that makes high-end electric cars -- and they make the cars now in Finland, that is wrong, and it has got to stop," Romney said. "That kind of crony capitalism does not create jobs and it does not create jobs here. I believe in free people and free markets and I want government to get out of investing in individual businesses."

Democrats have often pointed out Romney entered into similar partnerships during his tenure as governor of Massachusetts.

Romney once again invoked former Democratic President Bill Clinton in attacking Obama in an effort to drive a wedge between Obama and more centrists Democrats and independents who supported Clinton but may not be enamored with this president's policies, which Romney called "extraordinarily foreign."

"What he is saying is his justification for a larger and larger government," Romney said, pivoting to attack the president's health care plan. "This is very different by the way than the Democratic party of Bill Clinton, that said that the era of big government was over. That reformed welfare -- you heard that story by the way -- he is trying to take work out of welfare requirement. It is changing the nature of America, changing the nature of what Democrats have fought for and Republicans have fought for."

There are now more people signing up for disability insurance than are finding new jobs. This is the Obama economy.

Obama is trying to get people used to 8.2% unemployment as the norm. It doesn't have to be.

Obama is ruining this country. We need to remove him now!

His policies are driving us over a fiscal cliff.

He has no talent and no experience.

His Marxist plans are destroying America.

Stop Obama's war on capitalism, his war on America, his war on the middle class, his race baiting, and his class warfare!!

The amateur in the white house needs to go.

Why isn't this President running on his record?

Hell he passed Healthcare, Got the Stimulus and saved GM.

Why isn't he running ong on all those accomplishmnets?

Let's see:

Most don't want Obamacare.

The stimulus was a failure.

GM stock is down to $19/share, meaning the taxpayers are into GM for about $30 Billion dollars right now.

Yeah, I guess I'd lie if I were Obama, too.

The context of the Roanoke, VA speech you refer tonotice, I clarified the meaning in “( )” for those, like Mr. Romney, that don’t understand what the “that” is referring to:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that (unbelievable American system). Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

Funny thing is Dennis that most new businesses fail.

So were is the 'we do things together' BS then?

See Dennis it's a big risk to start something from scratch, and it's against long odds. So when we hear it really isn't us that succeeded we tend to get a tad pissy.

Then again I'd suspect you'd understand if you were in the club, eh Dennis?

Dennis - you start up any business? You responsible for making payroll every week/month?

Ain't no one around to help out with that Dennis.

But then again, not like Obama has any knowledge, skill, or training in business, startups, or running a business.

Nope he runs an entity that creates $4 billion in new debt every single day.

Wow, just wow.

Actually, I've read the transcripts of a few. Obama talks about when he first ran for state Senate, and were he traveled, who he met, what he learned, ..... talking about his grandparents, what they did, what they taught him ... his mother ... Michelle, her parents - her brother ... his realizations, middle class, the basic bargain ... how he is a champion for the middle class .... how he gets up everyday thinking of them and fighting for them .... blah blah blah.

One speech, Obama mentioned himself every 13 seconds ... he won't / can't talk about his record because his record is so pathetic.

The guy has nothing.

Anyway, happy ankle humping Betty.

These Romney campaign workers are turning out to be the biggest dolts. I suppose in a way it is giving them points, but don't any of them remember what they said in other campaigns, here we have Ed Gillespie who in 2004 was RNC chairman, demanding that John Kerry release 20 years worth of tax returns and then went after Teresa Kerry who files her own tax returns. What a hypocrite!

http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/07/17/530951/top-romney-spokesperson-urged-kerrys-presidential-campaign-to-release-more-tax-returns-in-2004/

In another flub yesterday, they had to take down the ad they rushed to produce, to try to offset the devasting ad the Obama campaign made showing Mitt singing "America the Beautiful" and used a portion of the President singing at a fund raiser "I'm so in love with you" which is copywrite material. Every day they trip over themselves.

It's the height of hipocracy for Obama minions to suggest Romney is a felon when Obama handed his buddy at Fisker MILLIONS of dollars of taxpayer money for campaign contributions.

Reminds me of Diane Wilkerson, a former MA state legislator that got bagged stuffing payoff money in her bra.

I wonder where Obama stuffed his payoff money. Maybe Crazy Joe Biden was on to something when he talked about Obama's big stick.

If the right wants to demand substance from a candidate, they should be asking Mitt Romney because every speech I've heard President Obama give he has talked about what he has done as President. The only thing Mitt talks about is President Obama; and Willard never gives specifics on what he will do beyond repeal Obam-NeyCare.

Oh, he's sharpening his tone is he? Try pulling your big boy pants up first Romney, and stop crying like a school girl for an apology.

Some time back when Romney was tagged for claiming he started a company, he stopped for a while, but now that media attention on this has died down he is back at it. Bill Bain started Bain Capital a year before Romney came on board! Romney did not risk anything--no capital, nor job security, or even his reputation. And regardless of the handful of companies that survived Bain's corporate raiding versus the many more that went under, the bottom line is Romney profited 100% of the time--often with use of taxpayer funds.

Romney doesn't say much about the Olympics anymore, and for good reason. He jumped on the chance to use his connections in Utah to resurrect his political career. Then he did some wheeling and dealing with Bain Capital (which supposedly he left) to apply pressure on companies like Staples for corporate sponsorship. The Olympics weren't even over before Romney was campaigning for governor in Massachusetts. Everything has been a stepping stone for him and that's all.

There's a rightwing chain Email (is there any other kind?) that even claims Romney is completely transparent (unlike the president-ha) including his tax returns! The Bermuda story is much more relevant than folks realize -- Romney put this in Ann's name the day before he was sworn in as governor.

And then in an attempt to appear not to be a "tax hiker," he increased regressive fees and caused sales tax and city taxes to go up to compensate -- Regressive meaning on the backs of the middle class/working poor. Also, Massachusetts would have ranked even lower in jobs if so many people hadn't moved out of the state. Not very different from Sarah Palin, Romney was absent the last two years as governor campaigning for president. Then on his way out, Romney took the hard drives with him.

Mitt's father George Romney said that only one year's tax returns could be a "fluke." Like blind trusts aren’t really “blind,” Romney knows full well that he is presenting a "fluke" tax return because he, unlike any other politician in history, has money offshore including a Swiss bank account. The reason Romney did not accept pay as governor is the same reason he contributes speaking fees to charity -- Because EARNED INCOME would make him pay more than a 13% tax rate. As for 10% of the 19% he gives to charity, this is tithing the same as all Mormons pay.

Unfortunately Mitt only learned the wrong things from his parents -- Who should have forced him to make his own way so that now he would be his own person. Legal is not the same as ethical or moral. A candidate can cheat on his wife who is dying from cancer, and that is not illegal. But do we want this candidate to be POTUS, Commander in Chief, and leader of the free world? No.

Character matters. Romney -- He's not in it for you.

Wow, I was going to mention that the number of federal employees is up 11%, that yea, state and local government employees are down because the states can't print money like Obama and the people have wised up to insane spending ... but Obama has the fewest "government employees today than ever?"

Wow ... you are adled.

You would also know that Obama's spending is the lowest since Eisenhower ended the Korean war.

Are you kidding me?

Eisenhower's highest deficit spending as a per centage of GDP (the real measurement) was -2.6%.

Obama's deficit spending as a percentage of GDP is -10.1%, -9%, -8.7%.

Eisenhower's spending as a percentage of GDP averaged 18.06%.

Obama's spending as a percentage of GDP averages 24.7%!

Those numbers are THE worst since WWII!

bob-180.... you know your stupidity is only overshadowed by your total disgusting persona. You are truly a pathetic excuse for a person but I guess that makes you a valuable Republican. The lower the level of the person the better the Republican.

I hope you don't have children or any influence over any children. Your filth and stupidity would have a totally adverse effect on any young impressionable person.

Your lack of intelligence and gutter filth is totally outside the realm of what any human being should be subjected to. Your disgusting "values" should not be inflicted on any normal person.

The mental midgets of the right are totally out of control as your post shows.

Go crawl back under your rock. The other snakes are waiting for you!

Those 20% of taxpayers who paid 94% of FEDERAL income taxes paid a smaller percentage of their income in total taxes, and probably have more than 94% of our country's wealth.

There are now more people signing up for disability insurance than are finding new jobs.

Oddly enough that pretty much is normal and not a number to be comparing with jobs at all. :) 85K monthly is pretty average.

When you read something question it, when you question it go look to see what the facts are, when you find out the facts you'd see it's BS shell game with numbers and you'd feel stupid for even bringing it up.

Here, read up. I dare you to become smarter.

This election should be a no-brainer. Obama is the most divisive President in decades and is totally ineffective. And was it yesterday that he said if you are rich, you didn't get there by yourself? Once again he tries to split this nation down lines of class, just as he has done down lines of race. I'm not rich, but am surviving as a business owner and I have nobody to thank except myself. Hard work and a desire to make a better life for myself and my family is only a bad thing in the eyes of our fascist President and those of his followers that are expecting to live off the backs of the rest of us.

If folks are signing up for disability, you can thank the GOP/Bush-era policies for the Lost Decade that has destroyed an entire generation of baby boomers. The younger generations too, but they have time ahead of them. Sadly, the repercussions will be long lasting.

So 5.25% Unemployment and a 3.9% GDP for 8 years was a Lost Decade??

What would you call 9.1% Unemployment and a 2.2% GDP for 2 3/4 years?

#1.66 - Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:31 PM EDT

Re-post:

The George W. Bush presidency, the Bush/Cheney years were bad years for us as a country. The national unemployment rate went from a little over 4 percent when he took office to nearly 8 percent by the time that he left. We went from a budget surplus of more than $200 billion to a budget deficit of more than a trillion dollars.

After decades of U.S. household income climbing during the 1980s and 1990s, households fell off a cliff during the Bush years. After poverty declined in the 1980s and declined in the 1990s, in the Bush years, poverty went up.

By the time George W. Bush left office, 6 million more Americans were added to the rolls of Americans who did not have health insurance. Wall Street in the Bush years collapsed. The country was plunged into the worst depression since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

The years of peace and prosperity under Bill Clinton are what folks want to return to. But the older workers hurt by the Lost Decade at a time when they should have had peak earnings, should have been able to build assets, and prepare for retirement -- some who may never reenter the job market, and if so, not with the compensation they deserve -- will NEVER get that decade back.

Ahhh, Bob. You just never want to mention George W. Bush, do you? And I am not sure where your numbers come from.

From Politifact:

For spending as a percent of GDP, the ranking from low to high is Eisenhower (18.1 percent of GDP), Johnson (18.7 percent), Nixon (19.2 percent), George W. Bush (19.6 percent), Clinton (19.8), Carter (20.8), George H.W. Bush (21.9), and Reagan (22.4).

    Bob -

The numbers above are total spending... my Bad!

But I like your shift from deficit spending to total spending as percent of GDP. In actuality, Bush ran about 20%, Obama is running about 14% AND dealing with Bush's legacy of Recession.

In actuality, Bush ran about 20%, Obama is running about 14%

      Wrong again.

Obama's "revenue" is running 14% of GDP (actually it has run around 15%.) .

Obama's "outlays" are running 24% of GDP.

Might want to try OMB, Historical Tables, Table1.3 instead of politico.

AND dealing with Bush's legacy of Recession.

Your post has just as much BS in it as Romney's speech. All you people have are misquotes and hate innuendo... it's pretty easy to see right through your fallacies (called Republican fantasies).

The truth is that the list of Bush and follow-on GOP f#$%kups are long and real and Americans will not forget them anytime soon...

Romney claims that Obama doesn't understand "business"... this coming from a man who's view of business is so out of touch and myopic that he wouldn't recognize a small business and their hardships if it hit him in the face.

You see, in a Romney world all problems are solved by tapping into your Cayman Islands account. In the real world personal plight goes hand-in-hand with your ability to start and/or support business. Try running a business with no money... not even in Romney's eyes.

So all Romney has to change the conversation against his taking millions out of this economy and refusing to release tax returns?... misquote Obama and act all insulted... how f@#$king clever! Wow, he's got me convinced!

        What an idiot.

Meanwhile Dems are begging the Fed to print more money:

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., exhorted Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to stimulate the economy before November through some form of quantitative easing or other monetary policy, which Bernanke said could create jobs.

“Despite two false starts, we’re having a much rougher time than we ever imagined getting unemployment down,” Schumer told the Senate Banking Committee. “So get to work, Mr. Chairman.” -The Examiner

He only grants interviews to fox. This man has nothing to offer this country except for more of the same old policies. Obama has knocked him back on his heels, and he is trying as hard as he can to not let us know who he really is or what he really stands for. This lack of information speaks for itself. He would finish the middle class off once and for all if he were ever to take the oath, which he would immediately violate. He would only be there for the wealthiest Americans, who don't need anyone's help.

I could provide you incredible links (if I thought it was worth my time) to show you that the president would probably kill to have Gov. Romney's record to run on. But the left only want to bring up the things that went wrong and not what went right which is overall a great record for MA.

Ben - Romney is NOT winning Independents. I'm a registered Independent and know many. Not ONE believes a word that comes out of Romney's mouth. He is winning no one but is constantly making it harder and harder for people of his own party to vote for him. I know Republicans who are planning to stay home and not vote because they can't - with a clear conscience - pull a lever for Romney.

You can believe what you want but, if Romney was winning ANYONE over the polls would show it. No one can get excited about him. As the campaigns move forward and more and more of his dirty laundry comes out, fewer will be willing to waste a vote on this nothing of a candidate.

The more he counts on the nastiness of Karl Rove, etc., the more he will lose the backing of decent people. And, he doesn't have the backing of young people at all. The GOP party line of hate for everyone who isn't in lock-step with the far right doesn't play well with young people.

That's the only logical conclusion. IMHO

I posted this earlier, but I think its worth repeating.

          Obama's speech October 22, 2008 -

Now my opponent is doing his best to change the subject and try to distract attention from the economy. Senator McCain's campaign actually said a couple of weeks ago that they were going to launch a series of attacks on my character because, they said, "if we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose." And that's a promise my opponent has kept. He's been on the attack. That's what you do when you are out of ideas, out of touch, and running out of time.

Well, Virginia, here's what my opponent doesn't seem to understand. With the economy in turmoil and the American Dream at risk, the American people don't want to hear politicians attack each other - you want to hear about how we're going to attack the challenges facing middle class families each and every day. That's what I'm talking about in this campaign. That's what I'll do as President. Because I can take two more weeks of John McCain's attacks, but the American people can't take four more years of the same failed policies and the same failed politics.

          Does anyone see any similarities?

(Sorry about the repeat, but the section above is likely to collapse.)

          Wayne-1656909 -- Agreed.

Three things: 1) Romney is a one-trick pony running on his "business experience," 2) even if the media stopped investigating Romney's finances, he still fails to provide a compelling reason why people should vote for him, and 3) the flip-flops are so "severe" that even staunch Republicans (especially Teavangelicals for reasons of their own) don't trust him.

The current debates about what kind of country we want to be are important. Private Inequity, Vulture Capitalism, and oligarchy rule by 17 cranky gazillionaires?

Eric Cantor is yet another Teapublican who has profited from "betting against America." Sheldon Adelson, a gambling mogul who is one those gazillionaires, just gave Cantor $5 million for his little campaign. But good old Sheldon Adelson may well be investigated for bribing foreign officials in China. The GOP/TP can try to block transparency about their donors, but we'll get some sunlight on it one way or another!

Clean the House -- Throw out these corrupt Teapublicans. And anyone who would vote for a 1% plutocrat like Romney has got to be off his/her rock.

And, since most of us care about the future of the country and of today's youth, we'll be voting for President Obama instead of the empty suit.

Maybe you should vote for he Marist? Perhaps their political views will be the same as yours - totally useless!

Don't say I never helped LOL.

Marist is an adjectival noun, the word is derived from the name Mary - in particular Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ. It was founded by Saint Marcelin Champagnat . The term Marist refers to organisations that are linked to (or whose origins are linked to) the religious orders that began as the Society of Mary, The Marist Fathers and Brothers and the Marist Brothers of the Schools, as well as to the Marist Sisters and the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary.

          Not really.

Obama is much better at message-framing than McCain was, and much better than Romney too. He's going to keep setting the frame until the republicans find a better campaign manager/strategist.

          It's not substance, it's style.

You express disbelief that Romney is nimble enough to pivot to offense. When I read the headline, all I could think was "Pivot? Why? Mitt Romney is quite offensive enough already."

Did you read about how his 2002 Olympics got their torchbearers' uniforms from Myanmar, over objections from most other countries who felt having forced-labor sewn outfits would be offensive. But Mittens, always ready to save a buck (or pocket a hundred) disregarded world opinion and bought slave-produced uniforms.

LIAR Romney! I'm so pissed that Romney is repeating the FAUX Noise LIE and taking the president out of context! Again, here is the complete statement:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business — you didn't build that (unbelievable American system). Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

          http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/07/13/remarks-president-campaign-event-roanoke-virginia

          STOP with the LIES!

Romney, you won't answer any questions -- Is that how you plan to serve our country? Uh, no, we don't want a lying secretive crook like you in the White House. Stop deflecting with lies about your opponent and come clean about yourself!

All Romney does is further convince us how badly we need to fix the tax code to end the 1% tax evasion, and make everyone play by the same rules. Obama/Biden - 2012!

Here Romney touts his business experience and yet whines and cries when someone challenges his business experience. Romney: own up to your underhanded business tactics that made your rich, own up to your offshore tax-haven accounts that made you rich, own up to your sending jobs overseas that made you rich, own up to your low tax rate that made you rich.

Romney, stop your crying already. It's not very presidential.

If the governor was on his heels, it was just a tactic. This gaffe (a real insight into socialist thinking) is the president's John Kerry moment. This is the body shot that will open the head.

Your post has just as much BS in it as Romney's speech. All you people have are misquotes and hate innuendo... it's pretty easy to see right through your fallacies (called Republican fantasies). Your "body shot" or "Kerry moment" isn't even worth responding to. It's a misquote. It's a lie. It's another Romney "I wish Obama had really said this" moment that will, again, go nowhere.

The truth is that the list of GOP f#$%kups over the last decade are long and real and Americans will not forget them anytime soon...

This election is becoming clearer by the day..

Governor Romney seemingly has no intent to stray outside the gated communities very far, for very long. His primary roll seems to be to fire up the red meat crowd, to open their pockets as far as they can, so the GOP can make record bank, and then divert that money into elections they feel they can win.

It's all a ruse.. or else the Governor would be doing things and running things a lot differently.

Such as how? Dancing to Obama's tune?

Obama opened his mouth and let the truth fall out- same as when he said "the private sector is doing fine". The truth? Obama is completely clueless about how the economy of this country works.

Government does not enable businesses- businesses, and those who own them and run them profitably- enable government to exist.

Taxes collected from barely half of us pay the bills. The rest is on a credit card that will be paid by our children and grandchildren- not all of them, mind you. Just the ones "fortunate" enough to be born to millionaires and billionaires who earn $200,000 a year or more.

Now that even the New York Times is calling a lie a lie- with regard to Bain- it will be interesting to see what other slander Obama can manufacture. Romney is happily married to his high school sweetheart- so he cannot dumpster dive into sealed divorce records. What's he got left? He wants to "tell us a story".

I've got one- it's about a really incompetent empty suit that got swept into office on a cloud of euphoria, and the hangover felt by the electorate just two years into his term. He gets swept out in the end- and after working very hard to repair the damage done by him, they all lived happily ever after, while he portrayed himself as a victim on TV.

              I call it

              Obama shelved in 2012.

I can't quite understand the Conservative logic.

On one hand, they claim that if small businesses are NOT sucessful and jobs are NOT being created it is the government's fault. However, if a small business is successful and creates jobs and wealth it has nothing to do with the government - they did it on their own.

Kinda like outsourcing jobs, fighting against minimum wage increases, reducing union influence, and eliminating public sector jobs - then complaining that 50% of people don't pay taxes!

President Obama was merely pointing out that after someone works hard and achieves success there are two approaches to deal with it - take all the credit and look down on those less successful, or be thankful and do your part to ensure others can achieve success.

Now which way is more American?

Hate to break it to you, government is for citizens and is enabled by citizens. No where in the constitution does it say "We the business...". Thank you for stating so eloquently, something I've been struggling to articulate for months.

The Republicans hold President Obama responsible for everything from the price of gas, to cutbacks in NASA programs, then they turn around and say we should shrink government to the size it could be drowned in a bath tub. If the free market sets the price of gas, how can you expect government to make the price fall?

Space travel is being privatized under President Obama, and the Republicans cannot even cheer for their favorite free market solution, because that would be giving Obama some credit.

Do you or your Republican minion have a clue how "the economy works according to Romney"?... and according to his big-money donors? I do. And the way they understand how it works doesn't include you or any others duped into supporting them.

Romney's view of business is simple. Business is a means to an end to take money out of this economy to support their continued richness and self largesse on the backs of EVERYONE else. Romney's love of the 15% tax rate and off-shore accounts is his "business acumen". He knows the system. He knows how to play it. Low taxes at the top end do nothing but encourage huge executive paydays and the REMOVAL of money from businesses that otherwise would go towards reinvestment or JOBS.

His problem? We know his play and the more others that know it will not just move their vote... they will hate him and what he stands for. Romney's brand of "business" is self propelled greed... nothing more, nothing less.

Governor Steve Beshear on Tuesday issued an executive order establishing the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange, a requirement of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).

States have two decisions to make after the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act: how to implement the health benefit exchange, and whether to expand Medicaid eligibility to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

The question of whether states will expand Medicaid eligibility is completely unrelated to the health benefit exchange implementation. Kentucky is still in the process of gathering information on the possible impacts of Medicaid expansion, and as a result, no decision has been made.

Clara, i'll add to thier PAIN with this Story from WLEX in Lexington, KY, a lil over an hoir ago.

Seems as tho these Conservative Democrats in KY,(also known as Republicans)understand that the Supremes Final Say a couple weeks ago, means they better get on the Ball & do something.

                Bracing for 2018!!!

By the time 2018 rolls around, employers will be required to pay a 40 percent excise tax, known as the “Cadillac tax,” for group plans with premiums that exceed certain thresholds. This also applies to self-insured plans, Trautwein says.

Under this provision, the tax is to be paid by the insurer for a fully insured group or third-party administrator in a self-insured arrangement, which would then be passed on directly to the employer.

“This is one of the worst provisions in the bill mainly because it takes an arbitrary number instead of looking at if your premiums are over a level, you’re going to pay an excise tax on every dollar above that level, whether you’re fully insured or self-insured,” Trautwein says.

Given future health care cost projections, nearly every group would fall into this Cadillac tax, and because of this, there is a push to repeal this part of PPACA, Trautwein says.

                TNSEVOL,

Yes I do know what Exchanges / Insurance are. My husband plan is considered a Cadillac Plan. This plan will take a big hit forcing the insurance company to pay out more which will trickle down to the employers. Two things can happen, employers drop out of the exchange and pay the taxes. Or the employer passes the increase on to the employees. Either why it looks like we will be shopping around for insurance, and what we once had and can afford will beyond our reach.

If my husband wasn't so ill the change would not be so upsetting. My biggest fear is he will lose his pulmonary specialist.

                Feisty,

I work for the owner of a Medical / Surgery Center Facility, which we also manage. I never said I was in the Medical Industry.

"Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain." Smoke and fire are no substitute for turning over the tax records. The Republican Party needs time to come up with a better candidate, and Romney cannot run and hide at the same time. He is in big trouble for lying to voters for ten years or for lying to the SEC for three.

Huckabee, Santorum, Perry, and Gingrich are all on record calling Romney a liar. Only the Republican base enjoys being lied to by their politicians.

Affinity, they tried out everyone during the primaries, when it looked like they'd anoint anybody who wasn't Romney. Problems was that one was nuttier (Bachman, Cain, Gingerich) or more dopey (Perry) than the next, and in the end they had to bite the bullet and take Romney. Seems they have a really short memory since Mittens is such a great candidate now.

Lets see now, Romney was successful as Governor of Mass., he was a very successful business person, and he was a very successful leader of the SLC Olympics. So he has a proven record of being able to manage large and complex organizations. And Obama... that's as far as I can get.

So, it will be 2050 and perhaps another Dem will be elected President and the economy will be faultering and the Dems will be saying "but Bush..." If you really want to talk truth, then finally admit that this is now Obama's economy and it sucks.

No, Dragon, unfortunately the GOP will go with Romney. He's the best they got and it would be embarrasing to go with someone else. Likely they'll chalk this up as a loss before it is started and move on toward 2016. You don't think they would nominate someone who is stumbling and bumbling? Well, they did in 2000 and 2004. How soon we forget.

Obama has accomplished absolutely nothing except preside over a poor economy and he has no idea how to make it better. Heck even the so called affordable care act was not his idea and he did not even write any of it and he barely got that passed with a huge majority. Dems should have had their way back then, but barely passing teh AFC was the best they could do.

Is that the best you've got. Heck, I'll even say that Clinton was twice the leader as Obama, at least Clinton was intelligent.

So, yes it taks more than one person to create and run a business. Customers, suppliers, owners, employees all are important in even the smallest of businesses. So go ahead and take credit for the successes and blame the failures on others it's perfectly normal. Selective memory is also a good trait when trying to woo the rwnj base.

The way you choose to interpet President Obama's remarks about 'no one doing it alone' reveals alot about your character.

My older brother and I are both fairly succesful. We both grew up in a lower middle-class environment raised by two parents with only high school educations.

We both went to college, received our degrees, and went on to pursue advanced degrees. My brother earned his law degree, and I achieved an MBA. He passed the Bar Exam, I tested and earned my CPA certification.

My brother takes all the credit for his success - anyone who isn't as successful as him is lazy and ignorant. His chiodlren look down on our parents and consider them "lower" on the social scale.

I freely admit that although I worked hard, I would never have made it without the support of my parents and others. My Dad worked his butt off providing for us - he took care of the big things like food & sheleter, and left us free to do our homework and study. We never went hungry, and we always had clothes on our back. My brother looks at my dad and thinks "why weren't you more successful", I look at my dad and think "thank you for working so hard to make sure I could be successful".

The difference in our two approaches highlight the differences in the interpretation of President Obama's speech. He is just asking us to be thankful for what we have, and support an opportunity for the success of others.

The conservative approach appears to be "screw you, I have mine go get your own".

@TNS - Sadly, this egotistical view is the most perverse human trait, and it seems to be the most prevalent in the GOP. Rather than thank public education, they bitch about it. Rather than thank the government for the protections it provides, they bitch about them. Little do they understand that without the role of government providing a playing field of opportunity, they would accomplish nothing.

When was Mitt Romney and his campaign to take the gloves off, get in the fighting spirit, and push back against Obama narratives?

Today in Irwin, Pennsylvania, Romney delivered.

I believed in what he was selling: A vision for restoring American greatness and defending success.

Obama’s inability to hide his ideological contempt for entrepreneurs & individual success has helped Romney self-actualize.

If he gives this speech with the same zeal and optimism from now until November — offering a clear, unapologetic contrast to Barack Obama’s bitter politics of resentment, class warfare, and entitlement, Mitt Romney will win.

You can watch the speech at the link below. They have the full speech and a 10 min version.

sonmanvb - which is exactly what the GOP is doing over and over again. They keep putting failures in office and think things will get better instead of worse.

Again, seeking sanity in the GOP where there is absolutely none to be found.

I wouldn't want to watch any speech by Romney. His speech is always filled with lie after lie. Sununu is showing how really unintelligent he is. What the right dislike about President Obama is that he is African American and really really smart and intelligent. They can't believe a Black man could speak so articulately and relate to ALL OF THE PEOPLE SO WELL!! Anyone running for President, should disclose all financial documents. The fact that he won't seems to indicate something wrong. This man, with all of his billions, pays 13% income tax. Those of us making $65,000 pay 22%. What is wrong with that picture.

Sununu owes an apology to the President for saying he is not an American. The fact that he had to try to walk that back says that he didn't expect the backlash from is words.

There are so many reasons not to trust Romney, with surrogates calling Obama "unAmerican". The ads run by the Obama campaign are truthfull and somewhat negative depending on whether you are left or right, but he never calls Romney a negative name.

You are correct, there is something wrong with him and others like him only paying 13% tax. It has to do with investments not taxed the same as income which should be taxed as income to bring the 1% folks to the same tax % as the rest of us.

I wonder if Romney &/or his team put Sununu up to it, as Romney hasn't the nerve to do so himself.

Obama failed big time on his policy agenda. he ignored to maintain a focus on an economic recovery. What good is healthcare if one still can't afford it? What good is financial reform if joe average can't meet the new financial requirements? You know the FED won't keep interest rates low forever. Then what?

Obama brags about avoiding colloquial definition of insanity shortly before putting self in straight-jacket

Speaking in Ohio yesterday, President Obama said he’s careful never to become the colloquial definition of insanity(Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result evry time.):

“I don’t know about you, but in my life what I’ve found, you know, sometimes I do boneheaded things, I make mistakes,” Obama said. “I find, when I try something that doesn’t work, then I don’t try it again. I don’t – you don’t go back to doing something that didn’t work.”

Then, less than ten minutes later, who’s up for some more “green energy” investments?

“We’re going to invest in American energy,” Obama said. “Yes, we want to continue to expand our production of oil and natural gas, but I also want to make sure we are the leaders in solar and biodiesel – the energy of the future that can help reduce dependence on foreign oil.”

The Obama administration spent $9 billion on solar and wind projects from 2009 to 2011 resulting in the creation of 910 “direct jobs,” according to a report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which is part of the Energy Department.

A study by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, found that 19 of the companies that received loans or grants by the Obama administration have filed for bankruptcy or are in the process of doing so.

These include Evergreen Solar, SpectraWatt, Solyndra, Beacon Power, which got $43 million; AES’ subsidiary Eastern Energy, Nevada Geothermal, which received $98.5 million; SunPower, which got $1.5 billion from the government; First Solar, which received $1.46 billion from the federal government; Babcock & Brown, an Australian company which received $178 million from the administration; Ener1, a subsidiary EnerDel that received $118.5 million; Amonix, which received $5.9 million; The National Renewable Energy Lab; Fisker Automotive; Abound Solar, which received $400 million; Solar Trust of America; A123 Systems, which received $279 million; Willard & Kelsey Solar Group, which received $6 million; Johnson Controls, which received $299 million; and Schneider Electric, which received $86 million.

Obama is without business smarts according to Romney people. Romney was a successful venture capitalist because he was willing to destroy vulnerable companies for his investors, and obliterate American workers' lives without any remorse or sympathy. This is also why Romney is revered by the plutocrats as a presidential candidate: he has demonstrated the capacity to kill the weakened US economy, feed off its carcass, and destroy ordinary Americans’ lives without any remorse or sympathy for anyone but himself and his buddies.

Obama promised he would quote "remove 2 million families from poverty in his first term"

Obama promised he would quote "cut the deficit in 1/2 by the end of his first term"

Obama promised he would quote "fix the economy & get America back working"

Well Barack, you've owned 2/3 of Washington since 2006 (100% your first two years) and you've managed to triple our debt, put over 12,000,000 more people on unemployment (4% increase x our population), added 2 million more families to poverty, the economy still sucks and you've given a free pass to illegals who are breaking the laws of the US Constitution.

You must be proud of yourself.

Mix together Joe Biden’s “every great idea has required government to succeed” and Elizabeth (Spreading Bull) Warren’s “there’s nobody in this country who got rich on his own” and you get this doozy that took place during Faint-Fest 2012 last week.

Transcript of part of Obama’s speech via The Blaze:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own**. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Yes, somebody did “invest” in the infrastructure that helps us thrive — taxpayers did — including those who are wealthy, along with small business owners and others who are apparently fooling themselves into thinking they worked hard and smart to get where they are when in fact they were carried there by big government.

Isn’t it too bad Obama, Biden or Fauxcahontas aren’t willing to make these statements to people on the other end of the economic spectrum? It would be interesting to see them stand before an audience of, say, plant workers who lost their jobs because of EPA regs, and remind them “you didn’t get to the unemployment line on your own — somebody gave you some help!”

Show me someone who lost their job due to EPA standards where the Standards did not benefit the greater good. EPA Standards have created more jobs than they have cost and we all get cleaner air and water as a benefit.

Obama should be proud of himself, or ashamed. You decide.

This shows the ratio of Federal employees to the private sector going back to 2001. The highest years, or course, are during the tenure of Party Boy Bush, the poster child of borrow and spend. Lately, even though Federal employees are being added to keep up with larger populations, they are enduring budget freezes and cutbacks. So, the next time you wait at the Social Security or U.S. District Court, remember that you have a voice.

Hey, I have an idea. How about if President Obama simply runs ON his record, instead of AWAY from it?

Record unemployment numbers. Record deficits. Record addition to the national debt. Record number of Americans receiving government aid. The only credit downgrade in our history.

And while he is running those commercials about Romney's time at Bain and exactly when it ended, maybe he can explain how THAT is somehow more important than Fast & Furious being covered up by "executive priviledge". I doubt many Americans care more about what month or year that Romney left Bain compared to finding out who approved allowing guns to be smuggled to Mexico and into the hands of people who are willing to kill American law enforcement personnel with them.

I'm tired of the he said-he said. Enough of the blame game. I want to know specifically, in minute detail, what both Romney and Obama plan to do about the economy. Romney's declaration that he will create jobs isn't enough. How, exactly, precisely, step-by-step. If he can't articulate that, then nothing he says has any value.

PS And he needs to release his tax returns. There is no good reason not to. If Romney wants to be CEO in Chief, then we need to see how he manages money.

Great idea, but one that can never happen. Neither candidate stands a chance of getting anything done as long as the corporations and lobbyists are controlling the House and Senate. It does not matter who sits at the desk if legislation never reaches it. Our lawmakers don't even write the laws they introduce until they are vetted by their corporate masters or the special interests that keep them in office.

The fact is that Romney made money for Bain and it's investors. Pretty simple to see he knows how to handle money.

Romney won't actually CREATE jobs, because it is not government's JOB to create them in the private sector. What he will do is foster a pro-business-type of government with fewer regulations and less taxes.

What have been Obama's plans to "create jobs"?

After listening to Mitt for the last 3 months, I can understand why. This clown will say anything to anyone at any time depending on where he is and who he’ talking to. He has no foundation. He’s for and against everything at the same time.
