Updated at 9:51 p.m. ET: The Romney campaign ratcheted up its language on Tuesday in a conference call on which former New Hampshire governor and White House chief of staff John Sununu said he wished President Obama "would learn how to be an American."
Sununu led a series of Romney surrogates in questioning the president's commitment to economic freedom, dredging up the president's ties to Tony Rezko; another speaker on the conference call said Obama's policies were akin to "socialism."

But it was Sununu's questioning of whether the president understood how to be an American, even after a subsequent walk-back, that made the call feel like part of a late-October attack, and not a story out of what Sununu called the "summer doldrums."
"The president clearly demonstrated that he has absolutely no idea how the American economy functions. The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world -- it is the American way," Sununu said in his opening remarks of the conference call.

He added: "I wish this president would learn how to be an American."
The first question to Sununu later in the call was about that comment, which exploded quickly on Twitter for its stark claim about Obama.
"What I thought I said, but I guess I didn't say, is that the president has to learn the American formula for creating business," he said. "If I didn't give all that detail I apologize."
The Obama campaign's Lis Smith said that Sununu's rhetoric represented that the Romney campaign had grown desperate.
“The Romney campaign has officially gone off the deep end," she said. "The question is what else they’ll pull to avoid answering serious questions about Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital and investments in foreign tax havens and offshore accounts. This meltdown and over-the-top rhetoric won’t make things better -- it only calls attention to how desperate they are to change the conversation."
Speaking Tuesday with Wolf Blitzer on CNN, Sununu said, “Frankly, I made a mistake. I shouldn't have used those words.” But he said he did not apologize for the idea that “this president has demonstrated that he does not understand how jobs are created in America.”
“He thinks that jobs are created by giving grants to your cronies, to your bundlers and your contributors, like he did with Solyndra,” Sununu said.
When asked whether he was apologizing directly to the president, Sununu said, “Yes, I'm apologizing for using those words. I shouldn’t have used them.”
Despite the walk-back, the tone of the call was consistently negative -- and harshly so -- with Sununu and the four small businesspeople on the call ripping the president's policies, background and campaign tactics.
"He comes out of that murky political world in Chicago where 'politician' and 'felon' have become synonymous," Sununu said at the top of the call.
"As an African American woman, people think I need to vote for Obama because he is black. Well I have been black for a long time and he won't get my vote," said Rene Amoore, a small businesswoman from here in Pennsylvania, adding. "He doesn't know what hard work means."
In defending the campaign's decision to not release more than two years of tax returns, Sununu also provided the kind of aggressive counterpunch that conservatives have been calling on the Romney campaign to throw for weeks, comparing the Democratic and media calls for more returns to be released to the movie "The Neverending Story."
Asked to respond to a new Obama campaign's ad which suggests Romney might not have paid taxes late in his Bain career, Sununu responded bluntly.
"It just shows how stupid the Obama campaign is," Sununu said, opining that if Romney had not paid taxes the IRS would be "knocking at his door."
"The Obama campaign has once again demonstrated that they are clearly and unequivocally a bunch of liars," Sununu said, just before the call's operator broke in to say there would be no further questions.

Their policies wiped out millions of jobs, left us fighting to wars without an objective, left the American dream in ruins after a housing bubble, created a too big too fail banking empire that is robbing the people blind, and concentrated most of the wealth in the hands of the privileged few. Is that what being an American is all about?
Obama's comments are just so classic.
So all us folks who took huge risks and left comfy jobs to start something from scratch and now employ others could do so only cause of all those great roads and public services.
Cool. But see gang, the vast majority of new businesses fail. All those poor bastards lose, and lose big. Big risk, big reward/big fail. Or as a mentor told me early on - you are now free to set your own schedule, and free to starve.

He was delivered by what doctor and attended to by which nurses? Oh yeah, all the records are in Kenya, except for his original birth certificate he'll only show a copy of because in reality Hawaii actually destroyed all birth certificates and rep[laced them with standardized state certificates of live birth. I'd say dismantling the corrupt lobbying health insurance industry is a good start to behaving like a true American. The Clintons attempted to do it but failed. Both Bushes ignored it and concentrated their efforts on both of their wars. In 20 years Obama will be noted as the one who ultimately started health care reform in this country (reform is just starting it has a long way to go), just as Reagan is now regarded as the pinnacle of deregulation which ultimately lead to our financial collapse. Albeit 20 years from now, health care reform will eventually become Obama's legacy as a true American.

1. Lying about everything. Remember that Sununu is a good Nixon republican.
2. Stealing from the masses for profit. If a business can be ethical and make a fair profit, then it can be unethical and make a ton of money. Since Obama does not support businesses doing this - he must be a 'foreigner'.
3. Taking tons of money from foreign interests. This is why Romney is not disclosing the names of his donors - they are not US Citizens (which is illegal). But hey - the laws only apply to the little people. Since Obama does not support / condone / profit from illegal activities - he must not be a 'true american'.

so your answer is that small businesses should not be allowed to exist and we should all be forced to live in the shadow of the uber rich corporations and spend our lives working to support their lavish lifestyles. NOTHING is more american than the small business man setting up shop in his community and working to provide jobs for others and an income for himself and a service to that community. but, big corporations would seek to destroy that. i watched a show about the middle ages the other day and feudalism. they described feudal kings and lords as believing that the common man was only there to work to provide for their lavish lifestyles. no one owned property except the elite. no one stepped out of their well defined class status to go to school, to start a business to OWN something AND the church helped the elite keep everyone in line be using fear as a tool. looks like our elite is trying to bring back the feudal system. but, in the middle ages, there was a small group of military men who lived just above the peasant class who started demanding rights, freedoms and fair wages. they forced the signing of the Magna Carta...the beginning of democracy in the modern world.
and just like these fighting men, we middle class will NOT go down without a fight! i have nothing against someone working hard and getting rewarded for that hard work. that's what the american dream is all about. but, when a very small elite controls everything, the average business man can't get a foothold. but, we can change that. how? STOP SHOPPING AT WALMART. JOIN A CREDIT UNION. start living lives that reflect your values. quit allowing organized religion to fill your hearts with hatred, prejudice and fear! God isn't about all that! God is about love and acceptance and brotherhood. the united states is SUPPOSED to be all for one, not every man for himself! we have allowed ourselves to lured into complacency by material needs. i want my mtv. i want my iphone. i want, i want i want. and if i have to bow down to the corporate overlords to get my little piece of the pie, i will.
i shop at trader joe's, a relatively small grocer in california. now, it's not so good if you have a horde of kids to feed, but for those of us who live alone or with just a few, it's perfect. they treat their employees right and it's a good company. i never go to walmart, i am determined to shed corporate american off my back like so many fleas and i will bet you i can live just as nicely as anyone else. if we all stood together, believe me, the corporations would change because nothing is more important to them than the god almighty dollar, the only god they worship. and if more people left their churches, they too would change rather than lose your money. we are all responsible and in control of our own lives.
don't blame the president because he wants to create an atmosphere where more small businesses can exist. if the larger businesses weren't so rife with corruption, we wouldn't need all the regulations. let's not forget businesses don't give their employees a safe work place because they have a conscience, they were forced by law. they don't pay at least a minimum wage because they want their employees to be able to live, they have been forced to by law. your boss doesn't demand sex from you because he's a good christian man, he leaves you alone because you can sue him and he can get thrown in jail! these things didn't come about for no reason. we as american workers, union or not have had to fight for every tiny thing we have! if corporate american had its way, we'd ALL be working for $7.50 an hour! and your wife would work and your children would work and you'd just work until you died. there! there's the solution to medicare and social security. just force people through necessity to start working when they're six years old and work until you drop dead. that would certainly save corporate american a lot of money...but then there wouldn't be anyone to buy their goods, would there? it seems that the uberrich are shooting themselves in the foot and they are under the misconception that all that money they're stashing away in the cayman islands is going to shelter then if the world economy implodes. they should seriously go do some reading about the french revolution, the russian revolution and the market crash of 1929. the middle class will rise from those ashes and we'll start again. but, will we ever learn our lessons?

People and businesses offer products and services in hopes of building a customer base, not waiting for a customer base to come around and then opening a business around it. Customers look for the best for the least and everyone else tries to compete with each other on that business. Why don't you think about a world were entrepreneurs were all gone, people seeking to build there own business to compete with the one down the block because they think they can do it better, get rid of all these people and see where your economy ends up.

Why is anybody surprised by the comment? It's true - isn't it? This president has made several comments to show he does not believe in Americanism:
1) Obama said he wanted to "fundamentally change the United States". What does that mean? To fundamentally change means you don't like what is currently the case and want to change it. So Obama does not like the U.S the way it is (and has been for over 200 years) and has started the process to change it to a Socialist European nation.
2) Obama has said at "some point you have made enough money". That is not America. We all have been taught (at least USED to be taught) that anybody can succeed with hard work and dedication. You can't be a professional tennis player without countless hours of sacrifice and commitment and the same is true in business and life. It's not guaranteed but for those who are dedicated, sacrifice, and are committed you CAN succeed. However, the opposite is true. If you are NOT willing to be dedicated, sacrifice, and be committed then it is a guarantee you CANNOT succeed. Obama has that backwards which is not what Americans believe.
3) And now Obama's latest incompetent comment that if you have a successful business you didn't do that yourself. Obama is implying (if not stating) that government is the reason you succeed. That is not American either. The Wright Brothers did not succeed in first flight because of government. Eli Whitney didn't invent the cotton gin because of government. Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb because of government. So Obama is wrong that government is responsible for your success.
So only a person who was uninformed could honestly believe that Obama believes in American values and quite the contrary. Obama hates America and doing his best to cause its capitalist failure (and is doing a great job).

The owners and workers in those stores then get paid from their customers, so they go spend money in businesses. And those businesses make money from them. And so it goes, all the way up the chain.
You remove customers like Republicans want to do... you remove the money coming in from the bottom... and that results in less money going up the chain, meaning less money for YOU. That's how the economy works.

Romney said he left Bain in 1999 to go and help with the Olympics, which is true. He was still listed as CEO and asked to sign some SEC paper work but had no involvement in Mangement and investment decisions. Which is true and not illegal. You can be CEO of a company and not make any day to day decisions. This has all been fact checked and everyone has concluded that 1.) He BROKE NO LAWS, 2.) Had no Involvment in decisions made at the time, 3.) Has not lied about to anyone.

In the case of Romney and his questionable business dealings and offshore accounts that no other politician to date has had (including the black-and-white claim that he didn't have anything to do with Bain after 1999 though in fact he did), this area of transparency is of particular importance.
The business about college records started with Dubya because he had a 'C' average, and his National Guard deferment, which was shorted is at the basis of the "Stolen Valor Law." Asking for transcripts in the president's case is just more Birther crap. Everyone knows the president graduated magna cum laude, so this is about lies that he got into Harvard with shady tactics -- NOT!
The excuses Romney has been making are so lame--Theresa Heinz should have released her tax returns? So what about Ann? McCain only released two years? Not true. McCain only released two years for the presidential campaign because he had been releasing his return all along over the years. In fact, John Kerry had been doing the same totaling something like 23 years of returns. Romney on the other hand has not done this.
George Romney, Mitt's father was among those who started this standard by releasing 12 years of his returns, saying that one year could be a "fluke." Romney didn't get his finances cleaned up prior to the one year he has released, and the partial on he says he'll release so close to the election he hope it will be difficult for anyone to attack.

He paid 15% because it was dividend income. He already paid a higher tax rate when it was earned as income. Just how much and how many times should the same dollar be taxed?

It also, along with his statement that "the private sector is doing fine", and insisting that those earning over $200,000 are "millionaires and billionaires", goes a long way toward explaining his failures.
Funny thing- my dry cleaner- an immigrant from Korea who actually has a framed copy of his citizenship papers on display in his business- was absolutely railing about that statement today. He and his wife and children worked sixteen hour days to earn enough money to buy their shop- and continue to work fourteen hour days to keep it profitable. Look at what I said above... the music industry. Used to require hundreds of thousands of people at music stores to get CDs to people. Everyone from plastic manufacturers to delivery, stock and sales employees. All those jobs gone, replaced by easy internet services that get music to customers. Will tax rates bring those jobs back? I live in MA, and contrary to claims, Romney wasn't all that successful with our economy during his tenure here. I'm not going to quote some politico, but Moody's Economy.com stated that Massachusetts was 4th weakest state in job creation during Romney's term - only 24,400 jobs created, a 0.08 increase. The good news is that we beat out post-Katrina Louisiana. Wages, adjusted for inflation, rose only $1.00 but government spending rose more than 20%. If Romney couldn't create many jobs during a tough economic time here (the dot com bubble had burst and MA was hit hard), even with a motivated and highly educated workforce, what makes anyone think he'll magically be able to do it as President for the entire country?
And I wouldn't trust Sununu even if I was dripping wet and he told me it was raining. Does no one remember how much taxpayer $ he spent on personal trips while chief of staff for Bush Sr.? As for your claim that the president is looking out for small businesses you are so off base. Obama wants to let the Bush tax cuts expire this year for people making $250,000 of more when in fact a small business owners business earnings are counted as personal income to him even if he employees others. So no Obama isn't looking out for the little guy. Obama gave trillions of dollars in bad loans to big corporations the only difference is instead of oil it is, so called green energy, but all green energy takes fossil fuel to run. Obama has handed out more food stamps and welfare then any president has ever. He was born out of wedlock to an African Moslem and the 18 year old white daughter of out and out Communists. The mother then married an Indonesian Moslem who promptly adopted the boy and moved the mother and the boy to Indonesia where he was raised in a Moslem environment. At the age of 11 his mother divorced his Moslem father (remember he had been legally adopted by the Indonesian) and came to live with his white Communist grandparents in Hawaii (a state not steeped in American tradition). Then I do some analysis to see if there is a DEMAND for that item. To say that customers "helped" me start my business is ignorant and naive. Customers did not "help" me. Customers like my good or service and elect to spend their hard earned money buying my product. If they buy enough I make a profit. If not then I lose money and ultimately may close my business. So to say that customers "helped" me start my business is one of the most unintelligent comments I have read on these threads (and I have read a LOT of ignorant comments). I opened my business BECAUSE I offer my product and believe people will make the decision to buy. I don't open my business because customers helped me. What a stupid comment.
So now we get to government and what are the true functions of government. Government is responsible in protecting the country and creating rules of law. But you are all backwards in your thinking. Businesses do not open and risk their time and capital hoping to make money THEN thanking government for their wonderful support but quite the opposite. Government is supposed to create an atmosphere so businesses can prosper which will benefit government. Government is not helping business. Business is helping government.
Therefore GOVERNMENT should be thanking business because without business we CANNOT have a government!! So government should be doing their best to REDUCE hindrences in the private sector. When government does that then businesses can succeed which leads to economic growth which leads to more tax revenue so government can continue investing in infrastructure that allows businesses to grow more.
This unintelligent logic that businesses should pay HIGHER taxes and that will help government is naive and incompetent. If you want an economy to grow then government needs to make things EASIER for business and why? Because business helps government. Government cannot exist without businesses so government should be THANKING business.
This president is anti-business and all economic indicators prove this point. Unemployment above 8% for going on four years? GDP now estimated at a measly 2% a year for the upcoming future? 1 in 7 on Food Stamps (highest level since the program was founded)? Most on Welfare in over 50 years? Most people unemployed for more than 6 months since the Great Depression? Lowest labor participation rate since the 1960's? This is a DIRECT cause of the anti-business policies of this president that hates capitalism.
So to summarize. No, I don't need to thank anybody for my business. I work 18 hour days, invested and risked my own money, sacrificed 6 years of earning potential while I completed a Bachelors degree in Economics, a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics, and a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration that also cost me tens of thousands of dollars (BTW, I also teach Economics part-time at a local college in addition to my business so if you want to debate me on how an economy works have at it and give me your best shot). I sacrificed delaying marrying my high school sweatheart by 4 years to complete college degrees and thus put off starting a family too.

THAT is success and is due to THEIR hard work. A FAILURE is a person who doesn't take responsibility for their actions and CANNOT succeed because they don't try. THAT is a FAILURE!! But don't come whining to me if a person is a failure. Take responsibility for your own actions and quite blaming everyone else for your failure. And Obama needs to be the FIRST person to stand up, accept responsibility for his failure, learn from it, THEN even Obama can be a success. But he will never succeed until he is able to identify areas in which he has failed (and there are a LOT of those) and learns from them. First thing Obama needs to learn is how business and economy works.

There is more to being the President of the USA than simply having business experience in the private sector imo. It is more than being able to sell or buy or market particular products for profit. It is more about the human resources here and abroad.
What the President of the USA does, do have an impact on people all over the world, whether we like it or not. The President cannot simply hire/ fire or lay off or downsize the masses here and around the world, or shift their jobs overseas for profit leaving the masses here without jobs or access to same. There are many services that a govt must provide for its peoples eg like safety and security, healthcare, education, consumer protection, public safetynets etc, which a corporation is not required to do. And the list goes on.....

When Obama was born it was called Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital. Now it is called Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. It is still there and you can still go there. However, confidentiality of medical records would probably prevent you being able to find out who his mother's doctor was.
Mr. Sununu's comment about if Mitt Romney had not paid taxes for some of those years the IRS would have come after him is disingenuous. He could easily have come up with enough loopholes and "business expenses" to offset his tax liability on unearned income (or "carried interest"). How much do you want to bet the infamous horse was written off as a "business expense"? He doesn't want to release his tax returns because he knows how upset people would be when they discover he managed to find "perfectly legal" ways to avoid paying any taxes at all in some years. Not having enough income to owe any taxes is a legitimate reason for not paying taxes, but making millions and paying no taxes is harder to explain.

In the first quote, by editing it as you have, you have made it sound like the quote is supposed to mean that Obama doesn't give any credit to the entrepreneurs, that the "that" means the business. In the context of the complete quote, the "that" seems more likely to relate to the mention of public roads and services in the preceding sentence. It is a bit confusing if you don't include the preceding sentence, but the larger quote is pretty explicit saying that entrepreneurs don't exist in a vacuum, but rather as part of a larger economic system. From that starting point, he implies that if more than one person is necessary for a transaction to take place, it is logical and fair that more than one person should benefit from the exchange. That is the nature of taxation.

Whether you agree with that point or not, it seems incumbent upon a man or woman of honour to represent it in the spirit in which it was spoken.
A functioning country and economy requires many components. Yes, there is some waste, and no, not everybody provides as much of the effort as some do. However, the rights to property are granted by the citizenry in a democracy. It is not always obvious, but we have all agreed to work together to build what none of us could alone. We do things that are patently unfair, but that we see as being for the public good simply because they coincide with our established social order, like rewarding trust fund babies for their good fortune in parentage.
The current incarnation of the United States is not static. We keep trying to find a better way, driven generally by a desire for equity. But equity is a slippery term. If your belief is that we should allow these people to die of illness, or starve, or allow their children to lose any possibility of survival or advancement, that is your right. But it is out of keeping with my reading of the history of the American character.
In general, I believe we try to maximize the realization of our collective well-being. This does not mean that everybody experiences equal joy or pain. It doesn't mean that everybody gets everything the want for free. It does not mean that benefits are always financial, nor that they are never financial. Often we are left with deciding what is the least destructive way to be unfair.
However, being an American citizen means that we help each other out when times are difficult, but also that we teach the generations that follow us that is their responsibility to serve, not just take, and that to serve well requires the development of resources during times of plenty that can be called upon during lean years. Our leaders forgot that during the last decade, and we are paying the price, now.

According to her financial disclosure form.
A lot of attention has been focused lately on Mitt Romney’s offshore finances in places like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.
But the word Bermuda pops up on the financial disclosure forms of one of President Obama’s top advisers too.
Valerie Jarrett’s financial disclosure form filed May 4 lists a line of credit from a Bermuda insurance company valued between $100,000 and $250,000.
We’ve asked the White House what exactly this mark is, and we’re waiting to hear back.

He has GE CEO Jeffrey Inmelt head his economic team while GE moves light manufacturing to China and the X-Ray division to China. Then GE partners with China to build commercial aircraft and transfers American technology (advanced avionics) to China. If the American people do not see that Obama facilitated more outsourcing of jobs than any other President, they are fools.

If we could only see Mitt Romney's tax returns, we might just find out how foriegn he is, or is not. Romney wasnt just "listed" as the CEO and as the sole shareholder of Bain- he was in fact the CEO and the sole shareholder at that time. The Romney response is I wasn't actively managing the company after 1999. Fine- but what is his position on what the company management he left in charge, primarily people he brought on board, did with the management of his company- since he was still the sole shareholder? Don't you think these people left in charge reflected his own views as well? And, what does that tell us about what he would do as President, if elected. Since Romney doesn't want to give us, the american voter, any specifics about what he intends to do as president to deliver jobs and jump start the economy, we are left to try and guess from his past actions. Maybe outsourcing was the right economic decision for Bain to make to mazimize its return on a particular investment. If so, why won't Romney stand up for those decisions, instead of trying to distance himself from them? If his position is that he would do things differently as President, since one company mazimizing their return might be the absolute wrong thing for an entire economy, if its at the cost of american jobs - why cant he say that?
And how do we square his current comments with him telling the Mass election people that he was returning to Mass. for business and other reasons during the period of 1999-2002 when he was living in Utah, in order to claim he had not abandoned his Mass residency so he could run for Governor? What "business" was he talking about?

The President's approval rating is certainly higher than that of the Congress, fhill. I would suggest they do something about that other than vote on the ACA and stump for re-election. He was born out of wedlock to an African Moslem and the 18 year old white daughter of out and out Communists. The mother then married an Indonesian Moslem who promptly adopted the boy and moved the mother and the boy to Indonesia where he was raised in a Moslem environment. At the age of 11 his mother divorced his Moslem father (remember he had been legally adopted by the Indonesian) and came to live with his white Communist grandparents in Hawaii (a state not steeped in American tradition). He was then raised from the age of 11 by these same white Communist grandparents.

President Obama is not responsible for his upbringing, but I must say that given all the opportunities for failure, he certainly did "bring himself up." What, if anything do you know about his mother, Ann Dunham?
Did you know that she was an anthropologist who specialized in economic and rural development? That's probably why she ended up in third world countries, and thus it's not surprising that she also married someone from one of those countries. His father, by the way was an economist. Sounds to me like he came from two very educated parents.
Why in the world would you call his grandparents communist? His grandfather was an Army Sergeant who enlisted right after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. His grandmother was a bank president.
Doesn't sound to me like these were people soaking off of society, and that even though his upbringing was not what the rest of us would call "normal", but he sure seems to have overcome the difficult times with the love and support of his family.

And as far as Romney's tax returns go - there probably are years he paid no taxes but did so legally through tax shelters and loopholes that are available only to people in his income bracket. I'm sure his campaign knows that trying to defend that, legal or not, would be impossible.
And there is the problem. The tax code is written by the rich for the rich. All the deductions and credits that favor the wealthy need to go. I would agree to a flatter tax if you remove all the special interest credits that have been put into place over the decades. The tax system needs a re-write. The basic tax creed should be 'if you earn it, we tax it'. There should not be these pages and pages of earnings that don't need to be taxed. If someone makes 20 million a year, they should not pay a lower tax rate than someone making 50,000 a year.

The home mortgage deduction and employer health care exemption. Anyone whose employer provides health insurance or anyone who deducts their mortgage interest will pay a lot more.

At those arguing about fair share, go look at the IRS cumulative tax tables and please explain why the top earners should pay a lower percentage than the middle. Tax laws are currently very slanted to give the biggest earners an advantage, but the sheeple fail to look at hard data and prefer to follow blindly.

Romney, unlike O'Donnell, should be able to defend himself without making a fool of himself. He has a mostly solid record as a governor. I made an intentional omission of political parties in my original comment. I clearly called out the distinction between liberals and conservatives as I see very little difference in congress between Democrats and Republicans. Congress has been bought and sold, and it was the supreme court that sold it. The only office we have left that represents the PEOPLE is the white house. Obama had super majority in both the House and Senate for two years and yet Reid never passed a budget. I call BS here. First, Obama had a supermajority ONLY in the Senate (and only for 6 months of that 2 years due to recounts and deaths), and only a simple majority in the House. Second, Obama's budget for FY 2010 passed in summer of 2009 - look it up. 2011 and 2012 have been funded with continuing resolutions, as 2009 (proposed in February 2008) was. 2013 is due anytime now.
