CINCINNATI, OH -— President Barack Obama took aim at Republican challenger Mitt Romney at the top of an otherwise lighthearted town hall meeting in a key battleground state.
The president addressed unplanned questions about topics ranging from gay rights and education to haircuts at a crowd of 1,200 here in southwest Ohio.
But not until he leveled more criticism at Romney.
The president said he hadn’t found “any serious economic study” that claims Romney’s economic plan would create jobs, “until today.”
“Today we found out there's a new study out by nonpartisan economists that says Gov. Romney's economic plan would in fact create 800,000 jobs. There's only one problem: The jobs wouldn't be in America,” he continued.
The president went on: “By eliminating taxes on corporations' foreign income, Governor Romney's plan would actually encourage companies to shift more of their operations to foreign tax havens, creating 800,000 jobs in those other countries.”
The president was citing an article from a tax policy newsletter called “Tax Notes” by a Reed College economics professor named Kimberly A. Clausing. In the article, Clausing doesn’t mention Mitt Romney by name but she does claim that a “territorial” corporate tax system similar to one of the aspects of Romney’s tax plan, would “encourage job creation abroad instead of at home.”
The Romney campaign as well as congressional Republican offices immediately pounced on the new talking point, sending out links to a Weekly Standard article that says Clausing is by no means “non-partisan” and that she’s donated money to the Obama campaign in the past.
Today’s move allowed the president to extend his outsourcing attack on Romney. “We don't need a president who plans to ship more jobs overseas or wants to give more tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas. I want to give tax breaks to companies that are investing right here in Ohio,” Obama said to an applauding audience.
But none of the questions that came out of today’s town hall were specifically about taxes or Mitt Romney or Bain Capital. Mostly people wanted to know what could the president do about unemployment and how could he help small businesses survive the current economic times.
Tony White, who owns a barber shop in Cincinnati asked the president, “What will you be doing…for the self-employed and businesses…with less than 10 employees?”
The president used the question as an opportunity to bring up the tax cut fight going on in Washington right now.
“His [Romney’s] basic tax plan is to give folks at the top… a tax break. Now, we can have that debate. But what I've said is, in the meantime, let's give 98% of individuals and 97 percent of small businesses some certainty right now by going ahead and passing a law that says your taxes won't go up.”
Afterwards, White seemed satisfied with the response but did say he wanted the president to go into more depth about how small businesses can get help since there’s so much red tape in getting what he needs from the government. “If he can cut out some of that red tape for the small guy, everybody would be a lot better off,” said White.
White also took the opportunity to ask another question: “Also, when can I cut your hair?”
Over the laughter and cheers of the audience, the president responded, “You would not want a president who was disloyal to his barber…I am not going to let you cut my hair, because my barber would be hurt.”
But the president’s most controversial answer of the day very well could’ve been to a question he got from a Girl Scout in the crowd: “What's your favorite Girl Scout cookie?”
The president’s answer was that he’s pretty partial to the mint cookies. Though the president couldn’t quite come up with the name Thin Mints, some in the audience knew exactly what he was referring to and booed the choice.
“I didn't mean to create controversy here. There was somebody -- did you hear, there was somebody booing?”
Tomorrow the president heads to Texas to some fundraising.

Just before that statement, the president spoke about all the great things in this nation that helps businesses succed, for example roads. That's what businesses didn't do, educate workers, build infrastructure, provide a military and police, etc.
Then after that statement the president went on to praise entrepreneurship. In fact, if you listen to the entire message, it is very inspiring. And unlike Romney, sincerely patriotic.

In Roanoke, around three thousand showed up- in an area of over 350,000 folks in a democratic strong hold.

So, as innovators innovate, take risks with sweat, time and capital, strong industries develop. Strong industries drive the economy and every one prospers. Automobiles led to mass production which led to factory workers which led to supply which filled the demand which created the need for better roads which led to construction of roads which led to lots of people working.....
To the President, however, that type of innovation doesn't seem to be enough.
We should see what Tim Berners-Lee has to say about the President claiming the government invented the internet so companies could sell things. That would be interesting.

The earliest use of vehicles was upon city streets, not on rural horse cart toll ways. In fact, early car owners were reluctant to use rural toll ways for travel because of their unreliability. Now go learn your history, and come back when you figure out that rural travel became widely popular when the government took over ownership of the toll ways and eliminated the 'toll road' concept.

Cough it up Candice, what does Obama say about the Internet? Ya see, Tim Berners-Lee might have a lot to say, but in case ya didn't know, the internet is something completely different than the web. Berners-Lee helped create hyperlinks and http, unique web interfacing with the internet. The internet, the backbone to the web, was developed by universities funded by the government. But hey, you knew that, right? Your snippy-snide comments indicate you know all about how that connection you enjoy to post your drivel.

The internet was originally developed as a way for universities to share information. The government helped fund that project initially and even more so as the defense department helped develop it for defense purposes. (If Russia dropped a nuclear bomb on Chicago, DARPA made it so we could still launch a counterattack from Kansas City).
The President said the government invented the internet so companies could sell things. That statement is just plain wrong.

Ah, that's a good line by Obama, or whoever wrote it for the president's prep. But this townhall can be seen as a canary in the coal mine for Obama. Everyone gets it - you're a better candidate, you're faster on you feet, you're less doofy, you're occasionally believable (as opposed to CEO etch-a-sketch), on and on. But this year there's too much economic concern to ride that advantage to the finish line. People want candid talk about what's next, what to expect as we continue the initial stages of this deleveraging experience.

Your statement implies you do not believe in the American system of governing because the President can do almost nothing without Congress. He cannot create law but he can sign executive orders that are only temporary and the EO’s can be challenged in court by Congress. Then we have the Supreme Court that can overturn laws that violate our constitution.
Why isn't MSNBC covering the statement from Obama that no matter who you are, or what your business is, or how matter how much you worked, sweat, and invested your own money into something, that "you didn't build it, someone else built it for you"?

During the 2010 mid-terms the GOP campaigned fiercely on the platform of job creation and, as a result of such promises, the GOP gained the majority in the House of Representatives. As the new Speaker of the House, John Boehner made the welcome claim that the primary goal of the Republican Party was to increase employment in the U.S.
His exact words were: "We're going to have a relentless focus on creating jobs."
Hmmm? Seems that Pres Obama has created more jobs than the ReSuckicans who likewise promised to focus on creating more jobs. They have created exactly NONE! But they have focused on one thing very successfully; blaming the Pres for the lack of job creation and a poor economy that they themselves are equally responsible for!
