Romney staff helps stamp out Paul's longshot hopes in Nebraska

Mitt Romney’s campaign had a heavy presence this weekend in Nebraska to help ensure that Texas Rep. Ron Paul would not have the chance to have his name put forward as a potential GOP presidential nominee at next month’s convention in Tampa.

At least five staffers, including campaign lawyer Ben Ginsberg, attended the Nebraska state convention this weekend, where the state’s Republicans were formally selecting delegates to send to Florida. Paul needed to win a majority of the delegates in Nebraska to add to the four other states he had won, and meet the five-state threshold he needed to at least maintain his longshot bid for the Republican nomination.

When all the votes were counted, the Texas congressman only won two of Nebraska’s 35 national slots – despite rallying supporters the night before on a conference call.

Nebraska Republican Gov. Dave Heineman did not attend the convention, but reportedly “worked actively behind the scenes to personally contact Nebraska Republicans who made the delegate selections.” As the first Republican governor to endorse Romney, Heineman wanted to avoid embarrassment and deliver his home state.

“We had a primary process,” Heineman said. “Mitt Romney won that and Ron Paul didn’t win a single state. I wanted Nebraska to reflect that.”

State party officials had security concerns due to the intense interest of Paul supporters after being warned by Republicans in other states their event may encounter “significant disturbances.” They initially planned to hire additional security guards to patrol the convention, but the idea was withdrawn days later and the convention concluded at the Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island with no major problems.

“We did it the Nebraska way. In Nebraska, we can have our disagreements but, at the end of the day, we work together,” state GOP chair Mark Fahleson told the Omaha World Herald.

Paul revealed that his staff has spoken indirectly with the Romney campaign about the national convention and described their organization as “very insecure.”

“They want to build a party and they preach this thing about big tent -- it's not like I'm preaching socialism,” Paul said Friday on Fox News, addressing fears over his presence in Tampa. “I am … for doing exactly what Republicans claim they believe in. So it is sort of ironic. … Why can’t we have a little debate?”

The Paul campaign claims to have 500 supporters as delegates – most bound by state party rules to vote in favor of Mitt Romney for president – and on Friday, the leader of this movement hinted at the influence they can have on nominations for vice president.

“The rules dictate who gets to be nominated … not only for a president, but for vice president as well,” Paul declared.

RNC Rule 40 (b) states that “each candidate for nomination for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States shall demonstrate the support of a plurality of the delegates from each of five (5) or more states, severally, prior to the presentation of the name of that candidate for nomination.”

The Paul campaign believes they have a plurality of delegates in at least nine states and are also represented in non-Romney slates of delegates from other states headed to the national convention. These activists originally supported someone other than Romney during the primaries and aren’t bound by state party rules to vote for the former Bain executive’s vice presidential pick,  which could present a challenge to Romney during the symbolic procedure of officially endorsing the nominee’s pick for vice president.

Too bad...Paul's appearance would've provided a little comic diversion at the Republican convention! But you had to figure Romney could control Nebraska's outcome with nothing left to spend money on in the primary.

That speaks volumes. The young Republicans are running away from the GOP of today and straight into the arms of Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is the least of NitMitt's worries. He already has enough delegates to win hands down. So why is he further alienating and angering the Paulie's? Does he want to lose that group too???

The last paragraph leads me to believe Nebraska doesn't matter.

They are claiming a plurality in 9 states, which according to their rules means he can still be nominated from the floor.

This was a very poorly-titled article.

20 Reasons I won’t Vote for Ron Paul.

He’s anti-gay marriage (supports DOMA)

2. He’s a young earth creationist

3. He’s a climate change denier

4. He believes that America, founded on principles of freedom of worship by many less-than-Christian framers, is a Christian country.

5. Worse, he believes that separation of church and state is a myth

6. He is against net neutrality (you know , liberty online)

7. He believes the civil rights act had a negative impact on the country

8. His stance on safety-nets (none, please)

9. His stance on student aid (do away with it)

10. His stance on health care (including Medicare, Medicaid)

11. His stance on abortion (goodbye, Roe v. Wade)

12. He would shutter the EPA (goodbye environmental health regulations, hello toxic daily life for our children)

13. His stance on Social Security (a hindrance to freedom)

14. His stance on taxes on the super-rich (no, thank you)

15. His stance on financial regulations (none, please)

16. His lack of support for renewable energy

17. He would close the Department of Education

18. He wouldn’t be able to bring the troops home: “Closing bases and withdrawing troops is an expensive process, and the DoD isn’t going to get very far if Congress forbids them from spending any money on it. It’s the exact same problem that prevented Obama from closing Guantanamo Bay.”

19. He signed the Pro-Life Presidential pledge, which includes a vow to only nominate pro-life judges to the Court. Generally, serious presidential candidates should refuse to sign all pledges, since they remove the rights of citizens in a democracy to see their wishes represented, and make their reps beholden to outside interests.

20. Given his ground game, he’d be tough for President Obama to beat. A lot of liberals, including myself, would be tempted to vote Paul. I’d rather Obama get to bat around damaged-goods Newt or wooden-1%er Mitt.

His foreign policy stances.

I hate his economics, but I am totally in line with his foreign policy.

I hate Obama's foreign policy, and I'm part of 'the base'.

So that would be the big 'discussion' far as I was concerned.

Ron Paul does not deserve audience at the convention as he is corrupt and biased in his thought processes and his minions are following a dead horse. His TEA party has but one thing in mind, and that is to limit Obama to one term. Sadly, if the people do not get out and vote, fringe elements will continue to control local and state level governments while America fumes.

Some of Ron Paul's views are good, while others are a bit whacky to me. I don't agree with all of his views, but I respect the fact that he's very upfront and says precisely where he stands on issues and why. Dr. Paul will never become President of the U.S., and the reason is very simple. He wants to cut bloated and unnecessary federal departments like education, commerce, energy, and urban development, balance the budget, eliminate the Fed, and put us back on the gold standard. These actions alone would save this country billions if not trillions of dollars, but most Americans can't fathom the thought of making such realistic decisions, and our entitlement society would never tolerate it. The pain would simply be too great, but the alternatives of doing nothing are far worse. It seems that Dr. Paul has the intestinal fortitude to do what is necessary, and that is precisely why he is not electable. The people of America want to be pacified, coddled, and schmoozed, so they can feel better about themselves and their maligned philosophies.

It makes me wonder what those Americans will think when the tax increases are implemented and keep increasing. When the deficit hits 25 trillion or more, and this government can't borrow enough to sustain its glutenous overspending, and people are giving more of their paycheck(if they even have one) to the government, the incentive to work becomes a disincentive, and the tax base dwindles even further. I always laugh when I hear Obama say he is going to tax the rich, when he knows that the rich are leaving this country in droves. Over 1800 gave up their citizenship last year, and more will be giving it up in the future. It is the working middle class that supports this economy, not the rich. If you don't believe me, just ask Warren Buffett.

It was hilarious to read about a couple of U.S. senators, Schumer and Casey, screaming for legislation called the Ex-Patriot Act, to keep the tax dodgers from ever returning to the U.S., which is absolutely laughable when we have millions simply walking across our borders every year. These politicians have to be the biggest idiots in the world, and the lack of their rational decision-making abilities will be a death knell for the entire system, so we'd all better be stocking up on ammo before Homeland Security orders another 450 million rounds of 40 caliber hollow points.

It is no wonder that God will eventually decide to purge this earth of its abominable infestation.

Ron Paul did not have a chance to win Nebraska is you count the votes of Nebraska Republicans. Mitt Romney won every county by getting an average of 71% or the vote. Ron Paul won only 1 of 1,785 precincts (plus tieing for first in another) and that was with 3 votes in each precinct. The chance of Paui winning Nebraska was a dream for Paul supporters and the liberal media.

mdsj, that is precisely what we have now. The federal Department of Education is extremely bloated and has not increased the educational level of the youth of this country, since its inception. If you check the "facts", the U.S. is very far down the list educationally and continues to fall.

Education is much better managed by states, and states should not be forced to follow federal mandates that have failed miserably and have actually encouraged cheating and dishonesty by faculty and staff to meet their required quotas. As a former educator, I can assure you that there are many aspects of big government that need to be modified, and the Department of Education is one of them.

A number of conservatives, such as pundits Bill Kristol and George Will and GOP politicians such as former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and primary rival Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, have demanded that Romney release his tax returns. And now the right-leaning National Review Online released an editorial stating that Romney needs to release them.

What are you hiding, Romney? My guess is that one or more years you paid no or only minimal taxes. It is that slick Wall Street way which upsets most of the hardworking blue collar Americans. This is the same Wall Street arrogance which brought us toxic assets (and consequently the Great Recession) and now Libor.

Why do pollsters disagree so much?

There is certainly some disagreement – even in final polls just before an election, but when you average all of the polls, you tend to get a better overall picture – probably because you are then greatly enlarging the size of the 'sample', thus minimizing the 'margin of error'.

One of the best sources in this regard is Realclearpolitics.com, which is an 'average of the polls'. Their accuracy over the last two Presidential Elections (2004 and 2008) has been quite good – beating all of the major pollsters, although they do have a slight Democratic bias.

One caveat that needs to be made with regard to Realclearpolitics.com, however, is that in the process of averaging polls, they 'mix apples and oranges' to some extent, which distorts reality – For example, they may combine some polls of 'All Adults' with polls of 'Registered Voters', and other polls of 'Likely Voters'. This can result in significant errors when estimating an upcoming election because Pollsters recognize that polls of 'All Adults' are typically biased towards Democrats by about 7% (when compared with actual election results), and polls of 'Registered Voters' are also biased in favor of Democrats, but with a smaller margin of about 4% (see link below for an explanation). All major pollsters recognize that polls of 'Likely Voters' are the best indicator of election results, but most of them don't switch to 'Likely Voters' until about a month before the elections – to avoid an embarrassing result when their final poll is compared to actual results..

If you look at the poll average issued daily by Realclearpolitics and make the adjustments for 'Adults' and 'Registered Voters', you actually will find an amazing consistency among pollsters. For example, on July 17, 2012, the Realclearpolitics' average of 'Likely Voters' polls shows Romney with a 2% lead, and if you 'adjust' the polls of 'Adults' and 'Registered Voters' for the average bias in those polls, they would also show Romney with about a 2% lead over Obama, even though their overall average favors Obama by about 2% because of the 'Adult' and 'Registered Voters' mix.

Of course, these polls change constantly, and we'll get a much clearer picture as the election approaches.

        http://www.polimerican.com/adults-vs-registered-vs-likely-voters/

One last point for those who want to make a 'guess' as to the favorite at any point in time is the 'adjustment' for 'Undecided Voters', which most pollsters say are about 7% of the electorate at this point in time. Studies have shown that when there is an Incumbent running for election, most of them 'break for the challenger' by anywhere from 65% to 85% (see link below)- typically they are 'Undecided' because of dissatisfaction with the Incumbent, but just haven't made that final commitment to vote against them. If this holds true in 2012, then that could add anywhere from 2% to 5% to Romney's total . At this point in time, it appears that Obama could be in serious trouble.

Republicans are not an inclusive party. They walk in goosestep together. There agenda is one of racial and wealth divisiveness and fascism. They kidnap the word freedom all the while trying to grow government by putting it in your bedroom, place of worship, growing the military and slowly turning into a police state. However, if they would pay attention to their own fascist tendencies they should take note that history proves fascism turns into a totalitarian government quickly and then everyone, including the wealthy, loses until a bloody revolution commences.

                  Detriot Storm,

Paul will hold a alternative rally in Tampa with music.

He did this in 2008 in ST.Paul. M. Bachmann even attended Paul's rally and lavished praise upon him.

And of course you have Trump arrivng in Tampa after his "Stateman of the Year " Award the previous week from Sarastoa GOP club.

Comedy Central and SNL will have a field day with this convention.

I may not agree with Dr. Paul's ideas, but I do respect the man for the strength of his convictions. I don't think these kinds of shenanigans are going to do the GOP and favors come November. Disenfranchising a segment of their base is either going to keep them away from the polls or to vote out of spite. This "tow the line" mentality is not going to help them in key states.

The republicans are expecting their base to vote out of hatred for Obama.

Why would it be unreasonable to expect RP supporters to vote out of hatred for the Republican Party which disenfranchised them?

Well, tek, Obama is busy locking up the dead pet vote

                  http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2018684401_voterforms14.html

Now, before you get all red in the face and start yelling that when those dead pets show u at the polls, they'll be refused because they cannot sign their names, (although, who knows what happens in pet heaven), bear in mind that no such requirement will stop them from voting by mail.

Nor will it stop the many non-citizens, who may, based on receiving registrations with their names already filled in, from believing that, WOW!, Obama got them the right to vote.

On the same note- Florida won the early round on the vote purge, so Obama decided that he'd better let them have that Homeland Security data they were looking for- and the purge is on, as the law suit was lost. So much for Obama's margin of victory in Florida in 2008. He sure will not be able to repeat.

What Paul was doing was the shenanigans, this time.

Ron Paul's main goal was to gain power in the party, and the second was to be the nominee if the things worked his way.

He was trying to undercut the support of the other candidates by getting his own people appointed or elected as delegates. Most delegates were "soft" commited, so if he got people favorable to him, they could vote for him instead of the way the state vote was cast. It's a rule legal maneuver but none the less a back door approach.

Romney put an end to it all by protecting what he had fought for.

A vote for a third party candidate, a write-in vote, or a withheld vote is tantamount to a vote for Obama. I would imagine that between Labor Day and election day Obama will slowly but steadily widen the gap in his favor. What remains to be seen is if the GOP focus turns away from Romney in favor of promoting the many congressional races. Obama can still prevail against Romney and his money but Democratic congressional candidates will have a hard time running against that much money if it is thrown into their races.

Every time I hear something like that said about someone I cringe. I have a question. Would you respect Hitler for the strength of his convictions? How about Tim McVeigh? Do you respect him for his convictions? No doubt -- Hitler stood up for and fought for his convictions. Same with Tim McVeigh. I'm not comparing Ron Paul to either of those men in any way. It just seems to me that what a person's convictions are is more important than respecting a person for the strength of those convictions

Wow that speaks loads about your supporting party if any vote but a GoP vote is a vote for Obama. Not only does it show a lack of confidence in your party, your candidate, and their supporting interests ... but it also shows that Tea Partiers amount to just pawns, means to an end of regaining power, its not like Romney represents tea party interests, or anyone say anything supportive about him without using the word Obama. Sorry tea party you were useful pawns in fighting "libs" but now its time to step in line and serve big money interests, because you hate Obama for all the parrot talking points we provided you.

Plus he had to work on that 2011 tax return and make sure his dressage horse (also known as "Tax Shelter") was ready for the Olympics. Wonder if the horse's equipment will be made in the U.S.A.?

Remember, it's our turn and the truth doesn't matter if we have all the gullible Republicans behind us." Unfortunately for them, all the gullible Republicans appear to be getting tired of more s**t from Romney. Lots of them are saying he needs to come clean about his Bain dealings and his taxes. Talk about a bad month for Mitt - July just doesn't seem to be his month!

But ya gotta give GW and the Big Dick credit ~ with the aid of bailing wire and elephant snot, they managed to keep the wheels stuck on the wagon until they could get the Hell out of town. All of 2008 was devoted to that task. No one was any more thrilled to see somebody else ~ ~ ~ anybody else ~ ~ ~ assume the office than GW and Cheney. Things reached critical mass in October 2008 and it was quite a juggle to keep all of the balls in the air until they could escape. They did it! That may be GW's greatest accomplishment, come to think of it.

People here don't understand the whole dynamics of this situation. Ron Paul has won 4 states. Minnesota, Louisiana, Iowa, and Maine. He has a plurality of delegates in colorado, nevada, alaska, virginia (most likely). Being nominated from the floor is not a bound vote. The chairman according to rules has to announce from the floor what the delegates of the state nominate. This is where the uproar will occur because the chairman at the microphone will not go with the wishes of the delegates of his state with is against party rules. Romney is going to do this because his whole election at the state conventions has been thuggery. They have been passing out fake slates, miscounting votes, and ignoring Robert's rule of order (very common by republicans). If the chairman ignores the wishes of the delegates which is not a bound vote they will be loud on national tv. People need to realize the only bound vote is the actual vote for the presidential nomination. The placing someone into nomination is NOT a bound vote. I hope people understand the rules. If the GOP follow the rules then Ron Paul will receive his 15 minute speech in front of the delegates. Knowing the history of this primary Romney will do everything illegal to make this not happen.

It has been Ron Paul not Mitt Romney who has resorted to "thuggery" at the state conventions. Ron Paul's strategy has been to consistntly snub the voting public in order to snag delegates at the state conventions that he never legitimately won through the caucus/primary process.

It's Rebublicans who have been wronged by Paul and his worshipful following, not the other way around. Republicans realized long ago that Ron Paul and his clan don't care about their vote if they can legally (but unethically) skirt around the rules to rack up delegates.

There is some concern that the convention will not be a rubber stamp for Romney. If this concern were not present, some states would not be requiring their delegates to sign loyalty oaths before being seated in the delegation. The fix has been in for several months, long before Gingrich and Santorum bailed. Ron Paul is nothing more than an antagonist at this point ~ but even that could create a turmoil. A helluva lot can happen between now and the convention. Republicans are committed to winning ~ and if it becomes apparent that Mitt can't get the job done then strange things can happen.

Obama run with it, give Romney what he deserves his contradcitory statements and foul ups deserve the exposure he is getting . Mc Cain after the persusal of his tax papers realized he would be a liability ,{ though Palin was an albatross around his neck} so he ran from him. In the primary he refused to release the tax papers, he was forced to . Newt called him a liar and Santorum said he was the worst person in the USA to run for president. They had good reasons to say these things .

For all Obama's ills, Romney and Company are either shooting themselves in the foot, or falling asleep at the pitcher's mound while the opposition steals home plate. It's not just the GOP base Romney must convince...it is the swing voters on the fence who last go around voted for Obama. While Obama may have disillusioned quite a few, it's another matter of getting them to the voting both, and yet another challenge to get them to vote for the GOP and Romney.

Personally I think the GOP missed a good opportunity...they could have let the Nebraska/Paul think play out organically. Instead, this will make them come off as heavies. Nice work.

I well remember the 2008 Democratic convention, when Hillary Clinton put Obama's name up for nomination. It was a stirring moment, and one that brought the party together after a bruising primary. Who's going to put Romney's name up? Donald Trump? Oh, that will be moving.

WM... I like your baseball analogy. I would like to add that a Mitt can be of less protection when you've been playing hardball too much. Things begin to sting when you're catching what the other guy is throwing at you. It starts to hurt especially when you throw the ball his way and he slings it right back at you!

Hardball ain't for sissies who can't stand being stung!

Mitch McConnell looks like he died a few years ago but he is still the minority leader in the senate. Funny that he is the minority leader and is totally against all minorities like the rest of the republicans.

In 2016, Ron Paul will/would be 81 years old. I'll bet the race for VP will be a barn burner.

Actually, I think he's setting up for his son to inherit the mantle.

That is truly to bad for this nation...In reference to the article about our blood soaked bitch...

Blood soaked bitch, where a blue stripped dress or purse just like the misfit crew that followed me into the Caribbean, with the blessing of DOD, so they could plausibly identify themselves before Obama's SOP had to roll them into a ford commercial that seems to be the best place to infer lethal control directed toward our closed society in his snowballing bubble...

A real leader would have cut all @!$%#in ties and put these freaks (that always stand in front of a terrorist to measure themselves) but my government seemed to be the @!$%#in lead with an investigative foundation by the FBI being used to secure this activity until they discovered their may be some seepage and they quickly but their cop hats on...

I would have rather had the psychopathic boyfriend of the girl that appeared on my floor and kept hanging on me put a glass bottle through my throat as the only three big Mexicans on the entire @!$%#in island (that also appeared on my floor) sat on my chest yelling for a doctor, then what I am going through now taking my family under with me...

The health care would have been better anyways if I survived...

All this to protect the perception of rule of law blood soaked bitch because your trash needed to reduce the risk of one innocent man by .0000001 % who had his head scanned -via a lethal procedure- for no reason by our global pile of @!$%# -without one fact to justify it- by collapsing an exponentially greater swath of society in front of what he was being forced to say while being maintained in an artificial state a shade less than torture -using the collapse of their rights to both suppress this deepening and widening criminal activity and actually add to it to steer me into the frame work of a false profile that would latter be back filled with pure torture should this repulsive @!$%#s fail...

From holders point of view the point of murder is better monitored as a foreign crew assumes it but since our entire democratic structure collapsed for no reason under him why not type up another classified nation wide constitutional opinion to allow one man to be tortured to death to save the perception of rule of law keeping a lethal injection from his arm if any court only read even the summary...

These @!$%#s were so bad that the two directly across the room from me, trying to befriend me with the most arrogant American mannerisms, broke down into perfect Hebrew when I wasn't looking when when of their tails arrived...Another one started to think I was part of her @!$%#in crew and took a liking to me until she found out what her job was and she couldn't even look at me the rest of the time...

The only thing protecting your repulsive comedy show of freaks is the most powerful and sadistic and immoral government on the face of the @!$%#in Earth where the same cowardly shame and perverted ignorance that makes every Senator worry about the position they were sunk into over the collapse of a democracy to hold a society at bay until the proof of a nation collapsing that occurred for no reason is dismissed by full blown torture that the FBI spots, is the same shame and ignorance that lets you have any influence over this nation where you take pride in always standing in the shadows of the most overt @!$%#s on the face of the earth hiding the second most repulsive and pathetic covert @!$%#s on the face of the Earth because now every US senator -that can't stand on anything else except you pointing out who those bad evil guys are, joins you...

What a strange little world you created Poet when all I wanted was a little pleasant vacation...but should I survive the next few months Jew(I know your memory is forever with you twisted @!$%#s) guess where I will be sitting..

Anyway, the only good American intelligence officer or counter intelligence agent is the one that doesn't show up to work...

The Republican Party has no big tent. It does have a nice beach mansion in the Hampton s for their 1% that are VIP's, but sorry Charlie, no room for any Southern Tea Party folks, your just not their type. The American public is beginning to see the hypocrisy in this party and Mitt and his gang will have to wait for another day unless they disenfranchise the American Public to the level that they lose the House as well. As so many are saying, "This isn't your father's Republican Party anymore" and my father was a Republican and is turing over in his grave to see all of this.

The Repubican party has developed as a core competency the ability to limit voting rights. Normally this is targeted to voters who they think may tilt to the Democratic party, but they can certainly apply to their own if they stray from the path....

Democracy is a foreign subject in the Republican Party. There are many Americans, they demonstrate, that could do without democracy too. Republicans have gone from opposing Democrats to opposing democracy itself. So, don't be the member of a minority or a woman if you want your rights preserved.

Romney is supposed to be so sure that he has the nomination but does he? If he is sure than the enterance of Dr. Paul shouldn't matter. The Paulites might make a little noise and a few silly demands (Shakespeare calld dumb shows and noise) but as a serious threat, no. I say let them play their games, shoot off their mouths, make their scenes, parades and all that stuff as it would be fun to watch but don't take them seriously as Paul has the chance of an ice cube in the Sahara of getting a major party nomination for President let alone win. People aren't that nuts!
