Handicapping a potential veep shortlist

Go big or go boring? That’s the question for Mitt Romney and his campaign team as they consider a vice-presidential running mate to join the GOP presidential ticket.

The cliche first rule in picking a No.2 is, “First, do no harm.” And that’s the lesson the Romney campaign likely learned from John McCain’s 2008 pick of Sarah Palin. The conventional wisdom because of it? Romney makes a “safe” pick in 2012. Then again, GOP presidential nominees have had a history of making surprises – George H.W. Bush’s selection of Dan Quayle, George W. Bush choosing Dick Cheney, and McCain picking Palin.

Vote now: Who would be the strongest pick for Romney?

Here is the NBC Political Unit’s guide to Mitt Romney’s veep pool – a look at nine of the most-frequently mentioned candidates potentially vying for the job.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte speaks during a press conference at the U.S. embassy in Manila on Jan. 17, 2012, while fellow senator John McCain listens.

Kelly Ayotte, New Hampshire senator

Age: 44
Education:
B.A., Pennsylvania State University, 1990; J.D., Villanova, 1993
Elected Office: New Hampshire attorney general, 2004-2009; U.S. senator, 2011-present
Professional Career: Attorney
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Joe Daley
Children: Katherine and Jacob

Strengths:

  • Ayotte is the sole female in Romney’s pool of top-tier veep possibilities, and could potentially help him erase the gender gap he faces against incumbent President Barack Obama. The latest NBC News /WSJ poll found Obama leading Romney among women by 13 points, 52 percent to 39 percent.
  • She’s young, telegenic, and conservative.
  • An early backer of Romney (she endorsed him in Nov. 2011), Ayotte has regularly campaigned for, and with, the former Massachusetts governor. Her most recent campaign appearance with Romney took place on July 4 in Wolfeboro, N.H.
  • She hails from a key battleground state that Obama won by nearly 10 points in 2008. That said, a recent NBC-Marist poll shows that adding Ayotte to the GOP ticket doesn’t really increase Romney’s poll standing in the Granite State.

Weaknesses:

  • Ayotte has been a U.S. senator for less than two years, which – fair or not – could draw comparisons to Sarah Palin, a conservative, female politician who served in major statewide office for less than two years before joining a GOP presidential ticket.
  • If former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney selected Ayotte (from neighboring New Hampshire), he wouldn’t gain much geographical diversity. Then again, a ticket consisting of southerners Bill Clinton (from Arkansas) and Al Gore (from Tennessee) won the White House – twice.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaks at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif., on Sept. 27, 2011.

Chris Christie, New Jersey governor

Age: 49
Education: B.A., University of Delaware, 1984; J.D., Seton Hall, 1987
Elected Office: Member of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, 1997; New Jersey governor, 2010-present
Professional Career: Lawyer; attorney for the District of New Jersey, 2002-2008
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Mary Pat Foster
Children: Andrew, Sarah, Patrick, and Bridget

Strengths:

  • He is the “bold” pick – a firebrand, who doesn’t shirk from battle. That demeanor fires up the GOP base, which loves a fight and wants someone to take it to Obama.
  • He balances out Romney’s somewhat careful, somewhat bland demeanor.
  • He’s seen as a problem solver – someone willing to deliver tough medicine, especially to public workers, in order to balance a budget. That would appeal to those who believe debt and deficits are top issues in 2012.
  • Pushed to diversify N.J.’s state Supreme Court, he nominated an openly gay African-American and a Korean-born prosecutor. Both were blocked by Democrats. This could help deflate the perception of a Republican party largely in favor of white men at the helm.

Weaknesses:

  • Though Christie’s moderate policy views (on things like gun control and immigration) might appeal to independents, his demeanor might not – he’s brashly gone after public workers, a sector that’s struggling.
  • The most obvious thing about Christie is his weight. There would be legitimate health issues raised about his readiness to be president and the rigors that come with the job.
  • Romney is looking for someone whose main objective isn’t their own career –  he needs someone soley devoted to getting him elected. Christie, with his larger-than-life personality, could overshadow Romney.
  • The New York Times suggested that Christie’s late arrival to Romney fundraiser might have created a negative impression with the presumptive nominee’s team.
  • His stance on gay marriage – vowing to veto it and then calling for a voter referendum – might hurt him with independents. Support for gay marriage has increasingly grown more popular.
  • After he canceled the largest infrastructure project in the country (a new train tunnel across the Hudson River), a congressional investigation found he “exaggerated when he declared that unforeseen costs to the state were forcing him to cancel” it, The New York Times reported.

Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington on Feb. 11, 2012.

Bobby Jindal, Louisiana governor

Age: 41
Education: B.A. 1991, Brown University; M. Lit, 1994, New College at the University of Oxford
Elected Office: Governor, 2007-present; U.S. representative, 2004-2007
Professional Career:  Health and Human Services assistant secretary, 2001-2003; president of the University of Louisiana Health System, 1999-2001; executive director of the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicine, 1998-1999; Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, 1996-1998
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Supriya Jolly
Children: Selia Elizabeth, Shaun Robert, and Slade Ryan

 Strengths:

  • Jindal checks many boxes – he’s conservative, a two-term governor, smart (he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford), and policy whiz (in his 20s, he helped overhaul Louisiana’s public health system). As conservative writer Philip Klein put it, “He’s more exciting than Portman and more experienced than Rubio.”
  • Despite that experience, Jindal – at age 41 – is still a young rising star in the Republican Party.
  • And as an Indian-American, Jindal would bring diversity to the GOP presidential ticket.

Weaknesses:

  • Unlike some other potential VP picks (like Ayotte, Pawlenty, and Portman) Jindal endorsed Rick Perry – a fellow governor from the South – during the GOP primaries.
  • Jindal’s first performance on the national stage – giving the Republican response to President Obama’s first address to Congress – fell flat. His surprising aw-shucks, Howdy-Doody delivery was widely panned, even likened to Kenneth from NBC’s “30 Rock.”
  • In March 2011, The New York Times reported that some corporations seeking business with Louisiana’s state government (like AT&T, Marathon Oil, and Northup Grumman) donated a significant amount of money to the Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana’s Children, a charity established by Jindal’s wife. This revelation came out after Jindal worked to tighten Louisiana’s ethic rules and lessen the influence of special interests.
  • Despite his insistence to construct sand berms to contain the BP oil spill – and his sharp criticism of the Obama administration during environmental disaster – a presidential commission concluded that Jindal “wasted $220 million building controversial sand berms that captured a ‘minuscule amount’ of oil and proved to be ‘underwhelmingly effective’ and ‘overwhelmingly expensive,’” USA Today reported.
  • In 2004, Jindal wrote about witnessing an “exorcism” that he claimed cured a friend of cancer.

Gov. Bob McDonnell speaks during the 7th annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on April 27, 2011 in Washington.

Bob McDonnell, Virginia governor

Age: 58
Education:  B.B.A., University of Notre Dame, 1976; M.B.A., Boston University, 1980; M.A./J.D. Regent University, 1989
Elected Office: House of Delegates, 1992-2006; Virginia attorney general, 2006-2009; governor 2010-present
Professional Career:  Lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army (active, 1976-1981; reserve, 1981-1997)
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Maureen Patricia Gardner
Children: Jeanine, Cailin, Rachel, and twin boys – Robert and Sean

Vote now: Who would be the strongest pick for Romney?

 Strengths:

  • Popular governor of a key swing state. His approval rating, according to a June Quinnipiac poll, was at 53 percent, though that’s down from ratings in the high 50s and even 60s earlier in his term.
  • He fits the image – good looks and an attractive family – including a daughter who fought in Iraq.
  • McDonnell’s not gaffe-prone. He rarely makes unforced errors.
  • The governor is seen as smart, capable, and not overtly ideological – even though he’s very conservative.

Weaknesses:

  • Polls have shown a McDonnell pick wouldn’t make much difference in Virginia, and Obama has continued to lead narrowly there.
  • He got carried into the national fight about women’s health rights when conservatives in Virginia proposed legislation to require invasive, trans-vaginal ultrasounds before women could undergo abortions. McDonnell ended up signing a watered-down version of the bill that required abdominal ultrasounds – but his approval rating among female voters still suffered because of it.
  • He won big in his 2009 gubernatorial election, but the thesis that he wrote as a 34-year-old graduate student at an evangelical school in Virginia, might get fresh attention. He called feminists “detrimental” to the family and was critical of a 1965 Supreme Court decision that overturned a Connecticut law prohibiting married couples from using birth control.

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty addresses the 2012 Michigan Republican State Convention at Cobo Center in Detroit on May 19, 2012.

Tim Pawlenty, former Minnesota governor

Age: 51
Education: B.A., University of Minnesota, 1983; J.D., University of Minnesota, 1986
Elected Office: Eagan City Council, 1989; Minnesota House of Representatives, 1993-2003 (House majority leader from 1999-2003); governor of Minnesota, 2003-2011
Religion: Baptist/ Evangelical
Marital Status: Married to Mary Anderson
Children: Anna and Mara

 Strengths:

  • Although once a rival for the GOP presidential nomination, Pawlenty has become a constant and loyal surrogate for the Romney campaign. The two men campaigned together in Iowa before the caucuses there; Pawlenty stumped for the Romney campaign in Oklahoma in May; he shadowed Obama on his July bus tour; and even made a cameo in this Romney TV ad.
  • His conservative credentials are rock-solid, which would please the GOP base. He opposes abortion (except in the cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at stake), he and his wife are evangelical Christians, and he opposes same-sex marriage.
  • As someone who has run for president before, Pawlenty is more than familiar with national scrutiny and high-profile debates.
  • Could he put Minnesota in play for 2012? On the one hand, he’s a former two-term governor of the state. On the other hand, he didn’t receive 50 percent or more of the vote in those two races. In 2006, he barely won re-election against Democratic challenger Mike Hatch, 47percent to 46 percent, and he might have lost if his challenger hadn’t referred to a female reporter as a “Republican whore.” In 2008, by comparison, Obama won Minnesota, 54 percent to 44 percent.

Weaknesses:

  • There are some holes in his conservative record. For starters, he signed a 75-cent fee on cigarettes, which some believe violated his “no new taxes” pledge. In addition, from late 2006 through 2008, Pawlenty championed policies to reduce greenhouse gases – like clean energy initiatives and cap and trade programs. In fact, he made climate change a signature issue as head of the National Governors Association. But during his presidential bid, he said this was a mistake. “I look the American people in the eye and say I made a mistake.”
  • How much do conservatives really like Pawlenty? Remember that despite going all-in, he finished a disappointing third to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul in the 2011 Ames Straw Poll. The day after that third-place finish, Pawlenty dropped out of the presidential race.
  • Given that the economy is Issue No. 1 in this general election, observers criticized the economic plan that Pawlenty unveiled during his presidential bid. That plan cut taxes (top rate reduced to 25 percent) but balanced the budget by assuming a bullish 5 percent annual GDP growth. One critic called that growth assumption “patently ridiculous,” according to The Associated Press.
  • How much does Pawlenty owe Romney? According to an analysis by USA Today, more than half of the political donations Pawlenty received after he suspended his campaign – to pay down his debt – came from Romney donors. “Romney loyalists, including 11 members of his family, several key fundraisers, his campaign aides and employees of the private-equity firm he helped create, donated more than $330,000 to Pawlenty since Aug. 14.” In April, Pawlenty announced his campaign was debt free.
  • Pawlenty recently joined the board of Smart Sand, a Pennsylvania firm that has built a large frac sand plant in Wisconsin. That sand is used in a controversial process to extract natural gas from rock.

Sen. Rob Portman attends the 2012 Fiscal Summit on May 15, 2012 in Washington.

Rob Portman, Ohio senator

Age: 56
Education: B.A., Dartmouth College, 1979; J.D., University of Michigan Law School, 1984
Elected Office: U.S. representative, 1993-2005; U.S. senator 2011-present
Professional Career: Attorney; business owner; U.S. trade representative, 2005-2006; director of the Office of Management and Budget, 2006-2007
Religion: Methodist
Marital Status: Married to Jane Portman
Children: Jed, Will, and Sally

Vote now: Who would be the strongest pick for Romney?

Strengths:

  • Portman hails from the battleground of Ohio, which could very well decide the election. He won 59 percent of the vote in his 2010 Senate campaign in the state.
  • If you’re looking for the exact opposite of Palin, it might be Portman – a former congressman, OMB director, and U.S. trade representative. He’s also been the go-to guy for GOP mock debate preparation, having played Obama (in 2008), John Edwards (in 2004), Hillary Clinton (in 2000), and Joe Lieberman (in 2000).
  • With the number of conservatives urging a “boring” pick, Portman certainly fits that bill – in the most positive sense of the word. He wouldn’t make mistakes and would start out as inoffensive to independents. He’s not a firebrand; he’s generally seen as polite and sober – which could also appeal to independents.

Weaknesses:

  • Romney currently has no direct ties to the Bush legacy. But Portman could take that away – he not only worked for the George W. Bush administration, but he owes much of his career to that political family.
  • As Bush’s OMB director (from 2006-2007), Portman presided over a period of time when the federal government was running deficits. That deficit would climb even higher after the housing bubble burst and the financial industry nose-dived in 2008.
  • He’s not even two years into his first term as senator.
  • While “boring” has an upside, it also has a downside, too. A potential Romney-Portman ticket has been dubbed “boredom squared.”

Sen. Marco Rubio addresses attendees at the NALEO conference in Orlando, Fla., on June 22, 2012.

Marco Rubio, Florida senator

Age: 41
Education: B.S., University of Florida, 1993; J.D. University of Miami, 1996
Elected Office: Florida House of Representatives, 2000-2008 (elected Speaker of the Florida State House, 2006–2008); U.S. senator, 2011-present
Professional Career: attorney
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Jeanette Dousdebes
Children: Amanda, Daniella, Anthony, and Dominick

Vote now: Who would be the strongest pick for Romney?

Strengths:

  • The GOP’s conservative base views Rubio as a rock star, so he could help Romney with a right-flank that’s often had its suspicions about the former Massachusetts governor.
  • As a Latino, he could potentially help with this fast-growing demographic group – and he’d make history as the first Latino to be on a major political party’s presidential ticket. However, there’s a question whether Mexican-Americans and Latinos with roots in Central America would identify with a Cuban-American.
  • At age 41, he’d give the Romney ticket a jolt of youthful energy.
  • As a senator from Florida, Rubio could help Romney in this must-win battleground state for the GOP. But polling suggests that adding Rubio to the ticket doesn’t boost Romney’s poll standing in the Sunshine State.

Weaknesses:

  • Given his less than two years in the U.S. Senate, Rubio as the VP nominee would raise questions if he’s prepared enough to serve a heartbeat away from the presidency – and it would (fairly or not) draw comparisons to Sarah Palin. (Obama, by comparison, spent four years in the U.S. Senate before becoming president.)
  • The revelation, in 2011, that Rubio’s parents originally migrated to United States before Fidel Castro came to power – despite his impression and statements to the contrary – highlights the lack of vetting he’s received on the national stage.
  • The additional revelation that Rubio was baptized as a Mormon (though he’s now Catholic) could bring more attention to Romney’s faith.
  • And he’s not exactly a model for fiscal responsibility: Rubio charged more than $100,000 to state GOP credit cards, had racked up nearly $1 million in debt, and had nearly foreclosed on a home. What’s more, his friendship with the scandal-plagued David Rivera could be problematic as well.

Rep. Paul Ryan listens during a campaign event at Monterey Mills in Janesville, Wis., on June 18, 2012.

Paul Ryan, Wisconsin congressman

Age: 42
Education: B.A., Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, 1992
Elected Office: U.S. representative, 1999-present
Professional Career: Marketing consultant, congressional aide
Religion: Catholic
Marital Status: Married to Janna Ryan
Children: Elizabeth, Charles, and Samuel

Strengths:

  • As chairman of the House Budget Committee, the 42-year-old Ryan is a young rising star in the GOP, and has become their chief spokesman when it comes to reducing the deficit and debt.
  • Romney picking Ryan as his running mate would signal that he’s doubling down on an austerity/deficit-reduction message. Indeed, while the Obama campaign and Democrats could point to visible improvements with the economy over the past three years (a lower unemployment rate, stronger GDP growth), there hasn’t been much progress in reducing the deficit. The deficit was $1.4 trillion in FY ’09; $1.3 trillion in ’10; $1.5 trillion in ’11 (projected); and $1.1 billion in ’12 (projected).
  • Ryan hails from a battleground state – Wisconsin – where polls show Romney currently trailing Obama. Obama actually won Ryan’s district in 2008, 51 percent to 47 percent.
  • Comfort level: When Romney campaigned with Ryan in the lead-up to the April 3 Wisconsin primary, the two men demonstrated a rapport not seen with other surrogates.
  • He would be a person to please both the conservative intelligentsia and the Tea Party base.

Weaknesses:

  • Ryan’s budget plan has become a lightning rod, and it will be a focus of Democratic attacks in the fall. The most controversial component of the plan is that it significantly transforms Medicare, which is regarded as the government’s most popular program.
  • There are also holes in Ryan’s budget-hawk armor: He voted for some of the biggest drivers of the deficit/debt: the Bush tax cuts, the Iraq war, and the Medicare prescription-drug benefit. Moreover, Ryan voted against the recommendations of the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles commission.
  • A member of Congress, Ryan has never held statewide office. He also has no foreign-policy experience. Both could be liabilities.

Sen. John Thune speaks to reporters after the Senate Republicans' policy lunch in the Capitol on Dec. 13, 2011.

John Thune, South Dakota senator

Age:
51
Elected Office: U.S. senator, 2005-present; U.S. representative, 1996-2002
Professional Career: Executive director of the South Dakota Municipal League, 1993-1996; South Dakota Railroad director, 199-1993;executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party, 1989-1991; special assistant to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 1987-1989; legislative assistant to U.S. Sen. James Abdnor, 1985-1987
Education: B.A., Biola University, 1983; M.B.A., University of South Dakota, 1984
Religion: Baptist
Marital Status: Married to Kimberley Weems
Children: Larissa, Brittany

Strengths:

  • Like Romney, he looks the part – Thune is both handsome and telegenic.
  • He could help with evangelicals, and is revered in conservative circles for defeating then-Democratic Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.
  • Thune is an early Romney endorser. He made the endorsement in Iowa, which borders South Dakota, in hopes of helping Romney in the caucuses.

Weaknesses:

  • He brings no geographical advantage to the ticket. South Dakota is solid Republican (although, as mentioned above, it borders Iowa).
  • He’s a former lobbyist, and that past work could play directly into Obama attacks.
  • He also voted for TARP in 2008, which wouldn’t please the conservative/Tea Party base.
  • If Thune were on the ticket, that might contradict the GOP’s fiscal debt/deficit message. Was named "Porker of the Month" by a watchdog group in Nov. 2006.

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL Tell me why none of this has been done by Obama your so smart.

Barack Obama promised to create five million new energy jobs alone, he claimed that, by the end of the first term, his healthcare plan, would quote, "bring down premiums by $2,500 for the typical family." He guaranteed that his financial rescue plan would help stop foreclosures. In the first year of his presidency, he pledged, quote, "to cut the deficit we inherited in the half by the end of my first term in office." He said he would, quote, "lift two million Americans from poverty" and, quote, "jolt our economy back to life."

Looking at the above choices, repubs are saying...none of the above including Romney. Romney ends up as the pitiful last candidate as each one of the others fell to the wayside.

Romney has been hiring advisers from the old failed Bush Cheney team. Bush/Cheney/Rove/Norquist/Romney for a worse tomorrow today. The failed destructive policies of the past that Romney holds so dear to him, because he was one of the greedy rich who made profits from planned downfall of America. It does not matter who he picks for VP as Romney wants to return to failed policies.

The silliness of this post and the fact you always have to be first speaks volumes about the lack of depth and integrity of the typical Obama supporter. At least Romney is choosing from a field of well-qualified fresh faces and not reaching back into the past for failed retreads as Obama did. Very diverse and qualified crew of VP hopefuls, but I wish he'd choose Ms. Ayotte, who would make people stand up and take notice of her intellect and qualifications.

Repubs ad for Vice President ran in papers the other day. The ad read, "Need a second strawman in case something happens to our first strawman." Actors were applying because they thought they were applying for backup roll as the scaecrow in the musical, "Wizard of Oz!"

And Redheads response was.

Or have you forgotten about our DO NOTHING Congress

Let me think about what you said. Obama couldn't get anything done in the first 2 years when he had one of the largest majorities in both the House and the Senate in a long time for one President, then in 2010 he lost the House and he couldn't get anything done and now a lot of analyst say it looks like they will lose the Senate. So using your logic we shouldn't vote for Obama because he can't get anything done with a majority in both House and Senate, couldn't get anything done with a split and he sure won't be able to get anything done if the Senate goes Republican.

So the repubs need a strawman....Hmmmm!. ......The Wizard of Odds needs a strawman......

Romney the strawman met with Cheney the other day at Cheney's home. Dorothy Cheney asked Romney, "Strawman, What would you do if you had a brain?" Romney the Strawman broke out in song, " Why if I had a brain I could...I could while away the hours, conferring with the flowers, consulting for the BAIN. And my head I'd be a-scratchin', while my thoughts were busy hatchin', if I hadn't worked for BAIN!

I had to laugh when Obama said in a interview this weekend that most of his ads are positive. Of course those that track such things claim 75% of Obama's ads are negative. When all Obama has done for 3.5 years is bombard the American people with blame and excuses, his idea of positive versus negative is as blurry as his definition of transparency.

Obama simply has no record to run on. Rather then cutting the annual deficit in half, Obama more then doubled it. Instead of changing the way Washington works, Obama has made it more partisan. Instead of uniting the country, Obama has divided it through race and class warfare. Even though the American people have suffered under Obama, his donors have received huge payouts in taxpayer dollars in some of the worst ever displays of crony capitalism.

Allen James, I agree. Keep in mind that nearly every presidential candidate has promised and failed to carry out their promises. Promises are just a part of the campaign. And for you Ms. LeftLeaningLisa, You criticize a common typo that even a first grader can point out. So how about you sit down and shut up.
The Romney campaign is not one I am in favor of, neither is the Obama campaign. As an independent, my vote can go either way. Beginning the 2012 election, the only person who appealed to me was Mr. Santorum. When he dropped out of the race, I no longer cared who would win the 2012 election. That is, until they VP candidates were being named. One name that wasn't listed in the article was Ms. Connie Lisa Rice. She's a wonderful woman who can emphasize conservative party. She has plenty of experience, and although many democrats would attempt to compare her to Bush just because she was a part of his cabinet. Keep in mind that her expertise may be enough to finally put an end to the chaos that has been going on in this country for 16-20 years.
P.S. JFK (Democrat) was the first Roman Catholic President. According to me, he was by far the best Liberal President this country has ever had. Don't you even dare comparing Obama to him. They're nothing alike!

I'll be happy to to refute the Senate Super majority lie yet again. There was not a filibuster proof majority in the Senate!

I'll repeat this again, just for you and all the others that continue with the Senate Super Majority lie. Here are the facts for you about "control" of the Senate. A party majority does not give you control when it comes to the Senate rules of filibuster. Every bill must have 60 votes to pass.

President Obama spoke about collective amnesia and rightly so. Apparently, there is an epidemic of selective amnesia concerning the 2009 and 2010 Senate "Super Majority".

For those who persist in the Senate Super majority lie of the 111th Congress and the continuing obstruction of the 112th Congress. So, how did anything get passed?( ie. Healthcare Reform, unemployment benefit extensions, payroll tax cuts) Ah, that dirty word -compromise. Even then and today, every bill needed votes from the Independents and Republicans.

No matter how many times you repeat that Super Majority lie it is still a lie. Did everyone forget the Blue Dog Dems (ie. Evan Bayh, Nelson, etc?) In fact, they never had a Democratic Senate super majority because of Blue dog Dems & Leiberman(I. Conn), just another pissed off Independent that consistently votes with the Republicans even though he will caucus with the Dems. He backed McCain, didn't he?

There was never a "Senate Super Majority". The GOP/TP has set a historical record for the number of filibusters in this administration and it still continues to obstruct any bills to move us forward.

The Senate Super majority myth

January 3, 2009 - 111th Congress sworn in. 55 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 2 vacant.

January 15, 2009 - Roland Burris sworn in to Barack Obama's seat. 56 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 2 vacant.

April 30, 2009 – Arlen Specter changes parties. 57 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

July 7, 2009 – Al Franken seated. 58 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THE DEMOCRATS HAD A SHOT AT A
60-VOTE MAJORITY AND STILL NEEDED BOTH INDEPENDENTS
.

August 25, 2009 – Teddy Kennedy dies. Kennedy had missed 97% of the votes in 2009 and over 90% in the last half of 2008. 57 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

September 25, 2009 – Paul Kirk appointed to Teddy Kennedy's seat. 58 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents.

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE DEMOCRATS HAD A SHOT AT A 60-VOTE MAJORITY AND STILL NEEDED THE INDEPENDENTS.

February 4, 2010 – Scott Brown sworn in to replace Paul Kirk. 57 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents.

June 28, 2010 – Robert Byrd dies. Byrd had missed over 90% of the votes in 2010 and almost 50% in 2009 due to illness. 56 Democrats, 41 Republicans, 2 Independents, 1 vacant.

November 29, 2010 - Mark Kirk sworn in to replace Roland Burris. 56 Democrats, 42 Republicans, 2 Independents.

Super-majority? It never existed because even during
two periods when Teddy Kennedy and/or Robert Byrd were unable to vote they still needed to get the votes of every Democrat plus BOTH independents.

FACT: The "Democrat Senate Super Majority" is a G.O.P. lie.

FACT: The GOP used every roadblock, filibuster, and secret hold they could think of so that EVERY bill had to have a 60-vote margin for closure.

July 7, 2009 – Al Franken seated. 58 Democrats, 40 Republicans, 2 Independents.

The two "independents" were the Self Proclained Socialist Senator from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats, and Joe Lieberman who is only an independent because he lost the Democrat Primary and ran for office as an Independent instead. 59, 60

Why is it Democrats need a filibuster proof majority in the Senate to take responsibility for anything? Republicans under Bush never even had anything close to a supermajority and yet you had no problems blaming them for everything.

Fact Democrats held control of The House, The Senate, and the White House and were powerful enough to pass Obamacare without ONE SINGLE REPUBLICAN VOTE.

Fact Democrats controled The House, & The Senate for Bush's last two years yet accpet no blame for anything that happened in this time frame.

Go big or go boring? That’s the question for Mitt Romney

It does not matter who Romney picks for his VP.

Republican policies do not bring about fairness, nor prosperity to our society.

Failed GOP policies:

Trickle/Down-economics: This principle allows huge profits to stay at the top.

The wealth does not even "drizzle down" on the "average American."

Supply Side economics: This principle does not create consumer demand.

"Do not tax "the job creators."

The posh "job creators" collect their cash and pocket it.

These above entities then outsource American jobs.

Low to No tax rates for the wealthy. This principle deprives the U.S. treasury of owed revenue.

Giving the "kitty," the U.S. treasury to the elites. This principle has made less funds available to the government. Now, it is difficult for the country to support its infrastructure.

Deregulating the financial industry. This concept has lead to massive bank fraud, a huge mortgage mess and the U.S's economic collapse.

Abe Lincoln is a famous Republican.

If Lincoln borrowed from today's Republican's "bag of tricks," he would get the same bad results.

GOP = No Health Care for "The Rest of Us."

Vote a Straight Democratic Ticket!

gtouch - okay, we'll put it in simple words for you - maybe then you'll understand. The Democrats had a majority in Congress during the first 7 months of our President's term. However, even during that time Ted Kennedy was ill so not voting and Congress took recess several times. Our President made the mistake during his first months of actually trying to work with Republicans. He didn't know they had gathered - on his first elected day - and declared they would do anything they could to make him a one-term President, to hell with the country.

And, once there was no filibuster proof majority (roughly 4 months) the GOP blocked everything. More filibusters than ever before!

Can you understand that or is that above your intelligence level? My guess is you'll have trouble with it.

....Except for Christie a bunch of clowns

Christie's accomplishments are all in his head. He only gets press because of his highly published (and probably setup) confrontations. His value to the party and the reason he was handed the job of the Federal Prosecutor was because he raised a lot of money for them.

What's he done for NJ? Zip. He likes to think he's taking on labor and yet all he has done is manage to get put into law what was pre-agreed on by both sides. Before the election he was trying to kiss their ass.

So far all he has done is give hundred million dollar plus tax breaks to businesses who moved a few miles. Thankfully, he spends little time in the state or it would be even more screwed up.

Face the facts libbies, your leaders in the White House and in Congress are useless. They can't get anything done so they blame the other party. Could you please tell me when any party had a filibuster proof majority? Bush didn't have one and you clowns blame him for everything, but I guess your party must share the blame because they could have stopped him. So it looks like you guys share the blame or have to admit your side is useless. But we already know that when things get tough the useless party runs and hides. The only problem with that is the simple fact that they always return and still get wooped. Remember Wisconsin? Bunch of chickensh*t coward dumb fux.

The left is pathetic when they claim Obama can't govern or lead because he doesn't have 60 votes in the Senate. There is such a thing as LEADERSHIP, which Obama does not have or understands. All Obama does is WHINE and play the BLAME game.

gtouch, You want 'broken promises,' here's a short list..."There are 43 million uninsured Americans – 4 million more than when the current administration took office. I will reverse this trend by making health insurance affordable for hard-working, low-income families." George Bush - 2000. Never happened. "I will establish the 'Healthy Communities Innovation Fund' to provide $500 million in grants over five years to fund innovative projects addressing targeted health risks, such as childhood diabetes." George Bush - 2000. Never happened. "To provide energy assistance to low-income Households and Address Short-Term Supply Threats, I will expand the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) by seeking the release of $155 million, and directing a portion of oil and gas royalty payments to the program, costing $1 billion over ten years." George Bush - 2000. Bush's first budget, for the 2002 fiscal year, cut LIHEAP funding by $300 million as compared with the previous year, despite higher unemployment and a colder winter. "To restore confidence in government, I will...return civility to the nomination process." George Bush - 2000. When Democrats objected to the nomination of William Pryor to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the White House stood by its allies who leveled charges of anti-Catholic bias at the Democrats. When Sen. Patrick Leahy confronted Vice President Cheney about the impropriety of this charge on the Senate floor, Cheney civilly told him to "F*** off." "To restore confidence in government, I will...attack pork-barrel spending." George Bush - 2000. Since assuming office, President Bush has failed to veto a single bill, despite the enormous amount of pork that has crossed his desk. Even conservatives were getting frustrated. The Heritage Foundation wrote, "Budget discipline clearly isn't a priority of this administration, so why pretend it will get tough on frivolous measures like these?" "By far the vast majority of my tax cuts will go to the bottom end of the spectrum." George Bush - 2000. The top 20 percent of earners received 69.8 percent of President Bush's tax cuts. Millionaires received an average tax cut of $123,000. Those in the bottom quintile of earners received an average tax cuts of $27. Those in the second to bottom quintile received an average cut of $317. "The Social Security surplus must be locked away only for Social Security." Bush - 2000. During 2002, the first fiscal year for which Bush was responsible (which is strange, since the GOP always say President Obama was responisble for everything since he took office Jan. 2009), he spent $159 billion of the Social Security Trust Fund surplus. The theft of $2.5 trillion in Social Security SURPLUS funds since Bush was in office, isn't criminal to you in the least?

Something that has been tried by 11 presidents before him unsuccessfully. Obama got it done. Not to mention he took an economy that was bleeding 700,000 jobs and now has added jobs for the last 20 months. He without any help from the republicans has done a great job and most assuredly can run on his record, of achievements.

And, the folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop.
And the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!
Now... the people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.
So... the people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff and giving them the free stuff in the first place.
We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

When you hit them with logic, like you did, they get very defensive and name call, and claim that you could never understand the answer, so they won't bother to give you one.

In all of my years of travel, I have rarely seen a lib who would even pay attention to a point other than their own. It seems to be some sort of cult or religion. I would be happy to have a conversation with one of them without the name-calling and insults, but I haven't found one willing to do that. The search goes on. The whaaaa, waaaa, waaaaa wistle is blowing hard. Looks like feisty got her dander up a bit.

Feisty writes

I already answered it YOU idiot!

And so did Cynthia's Point...

thanks for the win!

Whatever gets you off...!

Now be gone!

You're not worthy of my time OR attention... FRIEND! ;o)"

HEY VINE PATROL...ISN'T THAT A DIRECT VIOLATION OF SECTION 132-B/111 C3POR2D2 IN THE CODE OF CONDUCT LIBERAL ETHICS (no such thing) bi-laws? Are we allowed to call each other "idiot". I mean, I called someone a "dingbat" a while ago and the vine police suspended me for a MONTH! I had no idea that we could call each other "idiots" or I would have been throwing that around left and right because there's a great deal of applicable posters on here for that adjective. Apparently if Feisty does it it must be acceptable. Well, I'll just wait a little while for the verdict before I follow the always crude and never eloquent lead of feisty (what's her avatar say again? oh yeah "dumb fux") red head. Maybe I'm mistaken and you guys will call her out on it. We'll see.

I predict that Mitt Romney's first choice for VP will be thrown back in his face by all members of his party, from the far right to the extremely far right. He will be forced to pick another nominee, who may only be marginally more acceptable than his first. Let's watch what happens next.

For the Record:

This tells the story, why Bush was so bad at the end of his
term.

Don’t just skim over this, it’s not very long, read it slowly and let it sink
in. If in doubt, check it out!!!

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22, 2009, it was actually
January 3, 2007 the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives
and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time
since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that
everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this:

January 3, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the
Congress.

At the time:

The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77.

The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%.

The Unemployment rate was 4.6%.

George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB
GROWTH.

Remember the day...January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over
the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate
Banking Committee.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the
economy?

BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Unemployment...to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION
Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
FIASCOES!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001
because it was financially risky for the US economy.

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA

And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat
Congress

So when someone tries to blame Bush...REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007....THE DAY THE
DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party
that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as
well as 2010 & 2011.

In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to
compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending
increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely,
passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama
could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to
complete the 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very
Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the
omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of
the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the
fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress
took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the
budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what
Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to
expand that deficit four-fold since January 2009.

There is no way this will be widely publicized because of the strangle hold this Adminstration has on the media!

D Ray

Feisty is referring to this article refuting the Democratic Super Majority Myth

The term was they had a majority in both houses...........it never was about a "Super" majority that is why they would never answer the question they kept going over that and that had nothing to do with the question. So D Ray maybe you can answer the question since none of them could. If as Fiesty and others say that Obama could not fix the economy and jobs etc. because as they say the GOP would stop him. Which they say they did in the first 2 years when he had a "majority" in both houses, and they stopped him when the GOP won the House and he still has the Senate and if like many analyst say it looks like the GOP may take the Senate and have both houses..........then how is Obama going to do anything if elected since it will be harder in the future for him since he may have no majority in either House. That is the question and everyone hides from it because they cannot answer it. So please D Ray if you can give it your best shot.

@gtouch

I think your 'analysts' are engaging in wishful thinking. And I don't think anything I say will change your mind. Since you seem to miss the point of the article I'll paraphrase. Obama had a majority in both houses for just under six months due to Norm Coleman's stonewalling, Ted Kennedy's passing, and Arlen Specter's defection. He used that period to pass the ACA.

All credible economists say the economy is improving though not nearly the rate it could. Guess whose fault that is? House Republicans have deliberately impeded any economic or job creating bills until we the people finally give in to them and vote President Obama out of office. That won't happen. I estimate that Democrats will net one seat in the Senate and the House gavel to return to Ms. Pelosi. The filibuster rule will be eliminated on the first day of the next congress and then you are going to see a big can of economic whoopass.

Jettison the dark side my friend. We've got cookies over here.

D Ray

I think you need to check your facts before you post. Obama had a majority in both houses until the 2010 elections when the Republicans took the House and they took over in January of 2011. He had a majority for TWO YEARS. I guess that comes as a shock to you. So everything you typed after that is meaningless since your entire premise was based on incorrect information. So you cannot answer the question either.

I'm an independant so no side to jump from or to. I just don't like Obama's policies or the direction he has taken the country. I'm not anti Democrat. I don't like the extreme left or extreme right as to both of them it is a religion.

As far as the Senate goes.

Experts also agree that Republicans are well-positioned for success.

"My read right now is if you were making odds, it's probably fair to say that the odds of Republicans gaining the majority is greater than them not getting it," says Jennifer Duffy, senior editor for the Cook Political Report. "But we have a long way to go."

@Allenjames

Looks like not only does crusty dead head not have an answer for you but no other liberal on the vine cared to attempt to justify those broken promises. Oh people on here bring up Bush (not the sitting president) but they don't even attempt to debate your question.

First of all; that's feisty "dumb fux" dead-head for you. She will NEVER come back with a good debate when presented with opposing facts. I would love to see her trying to answer your question. I'm sure she hits the searches and says "okay, obama says healthcare reduced by $2,500 per family....uhhh, (searching, searching, typing, googling, searching) uhhhh, SHI% I can't find anyone elses words to combat him. Okay, okay, how about obama reduce deficit in half by end of first term (searching, searching, typing, googling) DAMMIT! still nothing...ahhh, I'll just find someone I can call a name or two instead"

I picture a smallish overweight troll with that fake purple/red hair and wayyy too much makeup or even worse...not enough makeup. Feverishly searching the web for her cut and paste responses. But to yours....nope, nothin', nadda, That's what you get when you deal with feisty "dumb fux" fake red head.

Now secondly, it seems you had a response from Leftleaninglisa that was oh so eloquent in nature. I believe she criticized you for a misspell or maybe a typo on your part. That's funny in itself, I hope she never, ever, makes a typo or mistake that I come across. But then she finished it up as so many holier than though liberals like to do. She finished by saying "STFU". Interesting, I get a great deal of entertainment out of people who attempt to silence others on the vine with that type of attitude. To Lisa I say be very careful with that sissified statement because by doing something like that you may just find it so deafening around you from now on that you won't be able to hear yourself think, that is if you ever did think...which we know you don't.

Well anyway, nice question that sure as heck shuts the liberals right the f&*% up doesn't it? That's because they have absolutely no defense or explanation that will hold any water at all. I love liberals/Tyrannicals, they are sooooo frickin easy.

D Ray do you even know what the word "majority" means? Apparently not. You do understand that in the Senate 51 is a majority since there are 100 Senators. That means there are more Democrats than Republicans. Why is it so hard for you to get this. The Democrats had a majority in both the Senate and the House for TWO YEARS. It isn't complicated. So let's keep this simple the Democrats controlled both the Senate and the House for the first two years of Obama's Presidency..............do you get that or is that considered higher math and beyond your abilities. It doesn't take 60 to have the majority that is the number needed to end debate....................Priceless.

Nope. We don't like him. He left a mess that will take YEARS to unravel.

Of course, there is that bridge issue, where people died, and Pawlenty's staff that held the portfolios could not be bothered to come back and deal with it. People dying was just unimportant compared to all the fun they were having on their taxpayer jaunts.

Can't be Paul Ryan, he was just dumped by all Catholics for his Ryan plan that attacks middle class and especially the poor by cutting foods stamps and special programs for the needy, and raising taxes on them while giving more tax breaks to the rich.

Pretty much any American news is skewed and has an agenda of some sort. If nothing else, the agenda is SENSATIONALISM to grab people's attention and get page views.

To the extent that MSNBC is liberally biased, I would state that equally so, Fox News is conservatively biased. Different demographics. MSNBC was for the New York expensive coffee drinking tree hugging crowd, while Fox News is for the Country Music listening, gun toting, Budweiser drinking crowd - and senior citizens who stay home and watch TV all day, and racist ethnic white people in the Northeast (some overlap there). CNN - not sure what their deal is, but Wolf Blitzer gets on my nerves.

FYI - If you were a fan of Fox News during the Bush Jr. administration, you are no better than anyone you criticize. People who swallowed the Fox News propaganda in support of Bush's Iraq war after 9/11 should bow their heads in shame for being such dupes.

Observations: Isn't it bizarre that all of the primary candidates - Trump, Bachman, Paul, Perry, Santorum, Gingrich, Cain - have vanished from consideration? Is Romney too thin skinned, or is it that everyone of those guys has sound bites about how bad Romney is, or is it that everyone of those guys has been firmly fixed as a Klown School Drop Out in the public's mind?

Romney's VP selection has the same problems that the GOP primary process has - you can't have an individual that both appeals to the wacko base and is sane. Everyone of these proposed candidates (and, in fact, every American citizen) is unacceptable to the base or is completely batty. That's because the rightwing base is looney tunes! They want to balance a $1300b deficit by cutting $20b in welfare and increasing military spending by $600b. They want to fight terrorism by destablizing the middle east and creating more terrorists. They want to lower gasoline prices by drill, baby, drill even though everyone in the business world agrees that doesn't help. They think conservation will cost too much, so they burn oil like mad, and they are surprised that the price of oil keeps going up. They want to help the middle class by eliminating "death taxes" and capital gains taxes. They want to defund medicare and social security, but they want to keep collecting payroll taxes to balance he budget! (and, of course, when they are collecting medicare or social security, suddenly they feel that they earned it and don't want those programs touched)

You cannot run a major political party on crazy positions. You can't even find a decent VP candidate.

Dave - I think you mean attack a woman routed in Marxism who dislikes this country for what it is/was. A woman who was never proud of the country until they nominated her piece of garbage husband for president. A woman who has a more hard core leftist agenda than that waste of oxygen she sleeps with.

If referring to her as a horse is "attacking" her it just goes to prove once again how thin skinned and wimpy the left is. Libs can dish it out alllll day long but can't take it to save their lives. Oh but I'll bet you didn't say squat when members of your pathetic party wished publicly for Dick Cheney's death huh?

Don't give me this "woman" bull shi$. Liberal/tyrannicals ripped the hell out of Laura Bush, Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan. They absolutely attempted to DESTROY Sarah Palin but couldn't come close because she's a strong woman who can handle a bunch of candy azzes like liberals. You're party came out in droves slamming Bachman for things that had nothing to do with politics but everything to do with her being a conservative woman. How about Bristol Palin? The only difference between her and the liberal sluts that frequently show up in the news spouting crap like you just did is that she decided to have her kid where they decided to kill theirs.

Attack a woman? WTF DAVE? You guys mastered it. So yeah, I'll go after Michelle and her Marxist philosophies, her hypocritical million dollar wardrobe and makeup job (she needs it) and anything else that I feel like going after her for. When liberals start showing one little ounce of couth I will play along. But your BS about nothing better to do than attack a woman is so far from reality it's comical. You round up your posse of liberal attack artists and fire off a nicely written public apology for all of the ignorant-ass garbage that libs have spewed time and time again and I'll think about recanting that michelle obama is a horse...of course, of course, that is unless that talking horse is barck obama's wife. Until that happens, welcome to reality where your liberal/tyrannical party doesn't get to make all the rules pal and it's very easy to beat libs at their own game.

Speaking of horses....have fun up on your high one...oh and you too WHAT.

Romney has no Bush administration ties? You're a day late and a buck short! Last week, Romney was the beneficiary of a Dick Cheney (AKA, The Prince Of Darkness) fundraiser. There's also talk about Condi Rice as Romney's VP. You remember ol' Condi? The expert on the USSR who was supposed to transfer that skill set to Iraq and failed miserably? How many more ties to the Bush administration do you need?

Good to see you track and follow all Romney's fund raisers... how about Obama's? Do you even pay attention to he cavorts with to raise money? How about those fundraisers by some of Bain's competitors? You know, vulture capitalists? How about the brain dead Hollywood actors... oh, I forgot, they are popular people so who could ever judge them by their socialist and progressive lifestyles and beliefs? Even though I'm a political atheist, I totally agree with Democratic Strategists and Pundits (one even on the Fox Channel) that Romney would be NUTS not to pick Rubio. I totally agree. He'll get whatever is left of the Tea Party, maybe Catholics and maybe Hispanics.

I won't pick a woman because that ship sailed...even though, as a single woman, I'm leaning toward Romney.

I practice birth control yet I find a woman's issue is more than her reproductive organs. It's all about the economy.

Auntie Fascist - Your narrow view of the war in Iraq is but a snippet of the overall picture. Why don't you add to the 4000 that died, the 25 million people that were freed? It would at least lend some credence to your hatred for Bush... no wait, that might actually level out the disdain you carry around with you. Liberals far and broad hated Bush from day one. 911 slowed that hatred down for about 2 weeks. For 8 long years we heard liberals cry, squawk, blubber, complain and shout very loudly their hate for Bush. Don't you think it's about time to give it up since he will never be president again? Or will you continue this for another 100 years into the future? Don't you know when to give it up? Apparently not. I know Obama uses Bush every chance he can. He, like you are sounding like a child that can not get over stubbing your toe.

I don't care what politico polled. First of all, you have no idea who they polled, or what questions they asked.

When Romney does go on stage, he will be carrying the burden of the Bush/Cheney legacy to overcome. Romney appears at Cheney's home for fundraiser and it is quite evident Cheney is calling shots on repub/Romney foreign policy. Numerous repubs that were on Bush/Cheney team are now working for or lined up on his team to be calling the same failed plans they did for Bush Cheney era. Why would America vote for Bush Cheney Romney again after they killed thousands of our soldiers because they lied? Why would Americans vote for Bush/Cheney/Romney again after they crashed the economy?

starsailing - It's so nice to see how a liberal thinks and spells it out so plainly. It leaves nothing to the imagination as to where your beliefs lie. I applaud you for sticking to your stories, no matter how wrong they are.

The economic crisis occurred after 06. In fact they occurred exactly 16 months after the democrats retained power in congress. The housing bubble was burst because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac sold toxic loans to lenders across the nation. Those toxic loans were made because of DEMOCRAT policies. Somehow you have been led down the road to hell in your beliefs that Bush caused it. The banking crisis is an offshoot of the housing crisis. So, do tell me exactly how Bush caused any of the economic calamity we are feeling today? Just because he was the president doesn't mean he caused it. Blame goes in the direction of the democrats and they've done an awesome job of convincing liberals that it was Bush's fault. Do yourself a favor... how about learning and researching what caused the economy to fail... it might actually open up your mind to the truth for once and you might redeem yourself.

But I regress... you have already been brainwashed.

I love hearing the same-old-same-old arguments from the left on anything GOP. That strategy has been used against Republicans since the Bush days, when they did everything they could to defeat him, stop his policies, and use anything to stop his administration from moving forward. After all, during the last two years the Dems controlled everything, and up to the first two years of the Obama administration.

If you are a conservative, you're bad-a member of the spending party, you're ok.

Since the Obama tribe has nothing positive to run his re-election on, let's do what is best and bash Romney.

Yes, they wish to see the previous 15 years or so of tax returns from Mitt. But why is it acceptable for President Obama to seal documents that others are required to reveal? Is there a double standard here? Of course there is.

And why? It's to move away from the Obama administration policies and continue to attack Mitt.

The move for a VP candidate on the GOP ticket is important to the libs for the sole purpose to conduct more negative campaigns against that candidate.

When you have such a dismal record of achievements in the White House, what else can the Dems do but attack in a negative manner?

My guess would be McDonnell, since Virginia is a key swing state, but Rubio would also help in a key state (Florida), and Portman would be an outside possibility - but not aggressive enough - Romney needs an 'attack dog', and Rubio would fit that quality best. I suspect that Hispanics would welcome him as 'one of their own'. The idea that only 2 years in the Senate is a problem is laughable, since all Obama did in his 3+ years in the Senate was run for President.

        Time will tell.

I would not put too much faith in Rubio getting the "Hispanic" vote.

He's from Cuban descent, which means the majority of Hispanics (mostly Mexicans) do not identify with his so called immigrant experience. The whole wet-foot/dry-foot policy is at fault, most other Hispanics resent Cubans because of that policy and think of them as having an unfair advantage when it comes to immigrating to the U.S. Haitians and other non-Spanish speakers hold the same resentment as well.

The new stance from the White House about not deporting immigrants who attend college was also a masterful play, in my opinion to derail a Rubio VP nomination. Given that Rubio's main thing was the Dream Act, the new situation diminishes greatly any impact Rubio would have had in voter consideration for that possible ticket.

Although Condi Rice is a rumor and a ploy tactic I rather like the idea of her as his running mate. I think she would compliment Romney well especially with her previous experience with matters of foreign affair. She ran the state department during Bush's term so who better to help guide Romney in handeling the world at large. She also comes with a wealth of experience that could only be an asset to Romney. Bush might not have been a popular or well liked president and no matter how we think he got it, managed to win two terms which has got to count for something.

I think that he should give her nomination a real look and consideration if she is even willing to entertain the idea. It will also prove to female voters that the republican party has evolved and is not the "old Boys club" that we tend to think it is which was the point of Palin's nomination(Although she was a superficial, selfabsorbed idiot. McCain could have found another female in the party who was more superior in intellect to fit the bill). I think we can ALL AGREE that Condi Rice is NO Sarah Palin.

I am a registered Republican who often votes Democrate in all honesty and for the life of me is trully stomped this time around on where my vote will be cast. With all of Obama's recent revelations and sway from his previous core message I've become a bit disillusioned with "CHANGE" but at the same token might not be ready to hand over another 4 to 8years to some millionaire whose interest might not align with myown seeing as that I am that disenfrancised middleclass voter. No we had 8yrs of corporate and millionaire interest being PROTECTED with George Bush to the point it almost destroyed our country. We gave them the money and they outsourced our jobs to countries with paywages that are a joke if not a travesty all so they could maximize the bottom line and their pockets.

So excuse me if I don't jump on the Romney train fully as he is not willing to be forth coming with his tax returns and disclose just how much he has made over the years. It denotes deception and that hes trying to hide something. Which even fellow republicans have told him to just release the records whats the problem? Chris Christie is NOT a good fit as his V.P. because his personality is as large as him and would overshadow Romney completely not to mention that he has a big mouth with zero self control and this would not bode well with foreign leaders as well as local politicians who want respect in their own right. Christie would inadvertently cause world war 3 and after 9-11 I know I and others around here aren't ready for that.

Hmmm... I am one of the Republicans who believes that Willard Romney would not be a good choice for the Republican party to run against Mr. Obama.

Aside from the religion issues, Willard has far too many kinks in his hose. He is not being forthright about his sources of income, and, Willard has failed to release 10 years of his income tax returns. This sets forth the idea that he must be hiding things. Why would Willard have to have some of his fortune in off shore banks, including Swiss banks? What is he hiding?

Any POTUS candidate wannabe who cannot disclose such information is a liability. Other Republicans need to realize this; and, focus on finding a better qualified candidate. If Willard wins the nomination, I am sure that he will lose to Mr. Obama.

It does not matter who Willard picks for a VP running mate. Willard could pick the POPE, have him convert to Mormon, and they would still lose to Mr. Obama.

Willard is very "sensitive" about his income tax issues. In defense of not disclosing the information, Willard actually said that U.S. Senator John Kerry's wife did not disclose her income tax returns.

Uhhh, Willard, you need to dump your advisers if that's the best they can come up with - Surely you must realize that Mrs. Kerry was not running for POTUS, her husband was running for POTUS.

Romney's choice of potential V.P. candidates is as bleak as the choices for the GOP during the Presidential primaries. His only saving grace was the many millions he used to smear his weaker opponents. Strangely, the only pick that would increase his odds in the general election is the very same choice that would alienate and bring defeating rebellion among the GOP base. Jon Huntsman.

The Christian right would crucify a ticket of two Mormons. The radical Tea Party would self-implode with a long suspected moderate and an avowed moderate leading the ticket of the party they worked so hard and so long to hi-jack. The GOP "Screwed the Pooch" by courting the Christian right and the Tea Party in a marriage of convenience. They are left with only a toss of the coin. The Christian right on one side and the Tea Party on the flip side. They lose either way.

LogicReguired -- The reason you don't see stories calling out Democrats for supposed hypocrisy is because Birthers, Transcripters, Fast & Furious Operation Wide Receiver, etc. are all conspiracy theories and real journalists don't go for that crap. Why is it that rightwingers never figure out that if a story has truth it will grow legs, and conspiracy theories aren't reported on because there is NO truth to these?

No doubt you would love to have nothing but FAUX Noise on the air. The Collapse Nazis that come in here on behalf of Team Romney and Karl Rove prove it. And talk about hypocrisy, you refer to the founding principles and constitution, but completely reject free speech, and a free press to play a watch dog role and inform voters, which is vital to democracy. No, you want just FAUX Noise and a one-party Teapublican system. And rightwingers call liberals communists.

Commonsense101 -- Agreed. The problem is the front runner. And if they were going to go with a Mormon, they should have gone with Jon Huntsman. Regardless of religion, Huntsman was the best in the original clown show.

Republicans are fascists and democrats are socialists. Rightwingers try to claim Democrats are anti-capitalism and even anti-religion, but they aren't. If anything Republicans who want a one-party, pro-military oligarchy -- that aspect of communism is a better fit to Republicans (the part of communism that is fascist). This is the common confusion.

Ryan, lovingly, sucks the anal-grease out of Satan's poopie hole in a very loving way, after he carefully reads long passages from the New Testament. He cries and kisses Satan's pooper hole after the dirty deed is done, too. He cuddles the Bible while raping small gerbils, and punishes his daughter for not looking chaste. He likes the smells of farts.

Typical, give up and go home because it can't be done since it hasn't been done before.

        Um, what about Reagan?

Thank goodness only half the country has this give up and quit mentality (and then blame it on Bush), makes room for the rest of us who want prosperity to get in and get things done.

        McCain lost to Obama

Did Romney take classes in how to win elections since then? How is he suddenly more qualified to beat President Obama? Answer: He isn't. Never has been. Mitt isn't even qualified to be dogcatcher. Especially dogcatcher. I'm not even sure Willard is going to make it to the debates much less survive one. Wonder who the RNC is currently plotting to broker the convention in his stead?

Starsailing again showing that he has no idea what he's talking about. Reagan raised taxes on a bogus deal from the ass-hole liberals that welched on their end of that deal, a lesson he admitted was a hard one to learn. What was the moral? NEVER trust liberals.

There you go with your Norquist reference. Shi$ you are predictable. I'm making a personal bet with someone right here. Seekingsanity won me some money a while back for being so predictable with every one of her/its posts, now I'm placing some money on you. Can one single liberal genius tell me how raising taxes on the rich will dent the 15 trillion? Please, anyone? Okay, I'll just ask for any liberal instead of any liberal genius...my bad, I should have known not to ask for something that only exists in fairy tales.

Rightwingwacko.........YOUR SAME WHINE OVER AND OVER> Don't raise taxes back up on the rich even though there is a clear correlation to depression and low taxes on the rich.

In the 1920's...repubs /severe tax breaks for rich/bubble/bubble burst/ depression.

Roosevelt Raises taxes back up/invest in America from Roosevelt and repub Eisenhower up to Reagan economy fine.

Reagan/voodoo economics under Reagan/ severe tax breaks for rich/ Reagan, Bush, crash severe deficit.

Clinton raise taxes back up/surplus economy great hands over super surplus to Bush.

Bush lowers taxes on rich again, crashes economy, two wars, doesn't pay for spending, tax breaks for rich economy crashes. Repubs pledge to take economy down, repubs plede not to raise taxes on rich/super depression while taxes at all time low and manufacturing profit at all time high, wages super low and midlle class has no money to buy goods etc. NORQUIST KING OF REPUBS/the economy crasher.

History shows raise taxes back up to fair balanced level, remove tax loopholes that allow rich to pay NOTHING and economy recovers and defits go down.

Even Reagan went nuts when his rich friends told him tax loopholes allowed the rich to pay nothing! Reagan raised taxes 11 times to cover his butt because things got so bad. Bush sr went crazy when he heard Reagan's plan to trickle on middle class. They bribed him to shut up with VP job!

When Romney was Governor the groth rate here was 47 th in the Nation because we were at above full employment under Romney. There was no upward room for us to grow, but we then elected a Democrat and now there's plenty of room to grow because plenty of us lost jobs here under the Democrats. The fact you are happy that people lost their jobs makes you the epitome of the Democratic voter.

I don't understand the aversion to facts from the Republican camp. Had Jeff just stated the facts it would be very helpful to Romney's image as governor and "job creator". Instead you choose to use exaggerations like "above full employment". Did you know that "above full employment" is not a desirable condition? It is an unsustainable condition that leads to inflation.

The facts are that during Romney's term, the state went from 51st in job creation to 30th. Unemployment went from 5.6 to 4.6% (with a 6% there in the middle). And, the fact is that state policies have usually very little effect on unemployment; the macroeconomics are the real driver.

The biggest asset to her name - and I regret that this may sound sexist - is that she's a woman. Republicans have been having a hard time with women voters the last decade or two, and something to prove that the GOP isn't actually about male dominance could be a nice strategy.

That said, of course, McCain tried something similar and it fell flat. Sooooo.... yeah, not holding my breath.

The problem Luke is who will help job creators stay in the US and make jobs here:

Is that going to be OBAMA or ROMNEY.

So far Obama AKA Community organiser has not been doing anything to help job creators stay in the USA. Plus to this day has Zero Experience in the JOB FIELD.

Romney on the other had has experience at the very top of a company and knows why jobs stay or leave. So this insight will help him create Job Friendly policies, so jobs not only want to create some here but stay.

Romney was in charge of Bain the entire time it owned Holson Burnes, from 1987 to 1995, FactCheck.org explains. According to SEC filings, Holson Burnes outsourced most of its photo frames.

The South Carolina plant's closure did not mean the immediate opening of a Chinese one, because the company closed that line of business, which sold to pro photographers. It did open a foreign plant to do another line of business, the fact checker says: "after the South Carolina plant closed, Holson Burnes entered a joint venture with Chu Kwun Kee Metal Manufactory, Ltd. in mid-1994 to manufacture picture frames."

They supposedly support the working man, but continue to immobilize them with extensive unemployment and welfare funds. The Liberal leaders, believe it or not, as ridiculous as it may sound, don't want to help bring up the lower middle class. They want to push them down and make the the social gap larger than what is is. I could go on about the faults of each party but I'm tired of typing.

Some of you people use this old saying.....".Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifelime."

Well it has been updated now,"Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will buy every bait in every color, new rods and reels and new boat every year, and he will help the economy to recover!"

          Lukewarm,

In your mind, why do companies "outsource"?

To most of us, the answer is to stay compettative, especially when a product or service require significant unskilled labor. So if president Obama makes it more expensive to hire american workers, with acts like PPAHA, among others, not to mention agressive anti-energy EPA policies driving up the cost of domestic energy, well that just forces companies to outsource more... They have to stay compettative with overseas companies or go out of business. Look at Solyndra if you need an example of what happens when you don't outsource - They produced solar panels domestically for 3 times the cost others were importing it for, even with half a billion dollars expedited to them by the administration, they were bankrupt in 2 years.

Blame 'Greedy corporations' all you like, but they outsource many production jobs to save the remaining US jobs, If they didn't they'd be out of business... Keep supporting these big government socalist types, like president Obama, and there will hardly be a company around that can afford to keep jobs in the US.... Whatever Bain did or didn't outsource, they did it to save the companies they invested in from the liberal socalist policies that were driving them out of business.... Hopefully, if Mitt is elected, he'll make decisions that will save the remaining US companies from needing to do it...

Bart wrote..."Blame 'Greedy corporations' all you like, but they outsource many production jobs to save the remaining US jobs"

Bart..........................Oh I get your point, send the $25 hr job overseas and give the displaced person a new job at Wal Mart for $8 less 40 hrs stocking the parts he used to make in America.

People who don't agree with Bart....Bang your head here>* It won't get any better for him. He doesn't understand outsourcing to sweat shops yet!

          starsailing,

Denying reality doesn't change it... Try this experiment, open a gas station across the street from an existing one.... Then charge double what he charges, but not for greedy reasons, you'll pay your employees double what he pays... See how long you stay in business.....

Good intentions don't translate to increased consumer demand... Company's outsource so they can compete, If they didn't they'd be out of business.... So you want a socialist agenda that makes it expensive to have employees, that's great, but unless every nation in the world does the same, you're just shooting yourself in the foot... Bain understands reality and works with the cards they have been dealt... Socialists ignore reality and blame the rich...

It's not new.. these tactics destroyed many nations before, hopefully we wake up before it destroys ours...

Bart: If we used your logic throughout history we wouldn't have been the worlds greatest industrial power until 30 or so years ago. We once did as China does now by protecting our manufacturing base. China discourages imports and forces companies that wish to sell there to partner with Chinese companies and share trade secrets with their new partners. They manipulate their currency and restrict imports of anything that competes with their companies.

We give them most favored nation status, impose low tariffs and allow items made in China by American companies to be treated as if manufactured here. We are expected to compete with so called free trade countries that pay $1 an hour and freely pump their sludge in rivers and ponds. Romney wants one of his first acts to be adding 5 more countries including Panama and Columbia as free trade partners.

It seems too many won't be happy until free trade means we compete fairly with third world countries living in mud huts pumping their sludge freely into rivers and the air all to make the 1% become the .01%. The U.S.A, the next third world country.

Larry: I just want to point out to you, Bart is talking about the world we live in, you are talking about a hypothetical world where the US isolates itself from the world via tarriffs. As far as I know, Obama has never suggested a Tarriff against chinese, or any other third world nations, imports to the US - So it doesn't really make sense for the US to enact policies for a scenario that doesn't exist and isn't going to exist in the forseeable future

          - I think Romney, is going to deal with world as it is, if he is elected - Dems, tend to think like yourself. They pretend they live in another, more idealic reality, and legislate for it - which, generally, just make things worse.

Bart...I bought my gas two blocks away from the gas stations you mentioned, cute girl working there!

Manufacturing was making record profits and middle class had money to spend on those products. I worked for Jostens when NAFTA was passed the next day they opened plant in Mexico. They were supposed to pay adults a certain amount, turns out children for pennies and teens who could not read English let alone Mexican. Plant failed, I blew the whistle on failed quality. Jobs came back, the company took quite a bath on image and quality for years. GREED.......Nothing but Greed. Point being product was great, profits were great, but GREED killed the golden goose and the people that fed the goose!

Repubs block all attempt to remove those tax breaks for companies who took jobs overseas.

Repubs block all attempts to give tax breaks to companies to bring jobs back.

Andrew, what you are trying to say to Larry is....you want the greedy rich to be able to keep the laws skewed in favor of the rich to make the maximum profit with out any allegiance to America and the middle class.

If elected you'd have to give Romney the title illegal immigrant president. His plans include giving instant legal status to 1,250,000 high tech immigrants. Romney claims there's a shortage of workers for high tech jobs even though government figures show unemployment in those sectors are double what they were before the recession. The truth is Romney wants cheaper tech workers and since those aren't the type that usually slip across the border he's willing to provide airfare.

Romney does claim bringing in these new citizens will create a lot of support jobs. Anyone up for selling Big Macs to our newest citizens? Those on the right blame Obama for allowing those who have lived here most of their lives to stay temporarily but have no problem with Romney flying them in?

The lunacy of the right bitching about welfare and the number of poor not paying taxes is that neither party will tax the poor or eliminate or restrict welfare. Foodstamps under Bush increased by 14.7 million the most in history and eligibility requirements were the same when he became president as the day he left. Nothing in Romneys plan taxes the poor or restricts welfare so what's the point of posting nonsense?

NORyC..........hard to folow huh?....The rich want to keep the laws in place to favor the rich at maximum profit no matter what. Crashing the economy was great as many made off with billions of dollars, causing the middle class to lose everything because of the lost jobs they had. Having jobs in the $20 dollar wage range allowed for a fair living. Now the middle class fight each other for jobs at $10 an hr while the rich reap record profits. Families, children are now starving and had to go on welfare to survive. Repub Ryan plan gives tax breaks to rich and kills food stamps for the starving.

Choice...... feed children and starving people caused by greedy rich, or give the rich even more money. How about getting the normal paying wage back?....Jobs outsorced by Romney ar Bain/job killer.

Pawlenty...borrowed, borrowed, and borrowed and would not compromise on any issue with his pledge to Norquist. Kick the can down the road, borrowing against education funds and not paying them back. Since T-paw would not raise taxes to pay for his plans, all property taxes shot up to cover Pawlentys borrowing. Then he says he balanced our budget? Spend and borrow, typical repub.

VP choice can't be Paul Ryan or Cantor, they were part of the traitor team of repubs that met the night of Obama's inauguration that pledged to take the economy down.

The night of President Obama inauguration, 14-15 repubs met and specifically pledged to vote against every bill that would help President Obama in a bid for a second term. They pledged to act like the Taliban, like insurgents do to make President Obama a one term president. They also took the Norquist pledge putting Norquist above the people and the constitution of the United States. The same plan Bin Laden put in writing to take the country down. Traitors to our country, take the economy down to make President Obama a one term president. Never in our history has this happened.

Actually, choosing a running mate may be a waste of time for Romney. I predicted way back at the beginning of the Republican primaries and caucuses that the actual Republican nominee might not emerge until the convention, despite how late it is. If Romney really has something in his tax returns that he's wanting to hide, he could end up losing the convention vote. Republicans already are criticizing him for all this Bain Capital mystery, the offshore accounts, etc. He's never solidified his base--in fact, Romney's base seems to consist of a small group of one-percenters. If the Tea Party-ers turn on him, look out.

Oh, OK Bob. Romney's candidacy has conservatives shouting "hosanna"!! This isn't the first time there's been discussion of a brokered convention. Politico.com today discusses the potential disruptions that could be caused by Ron Paul, Sarah Palin and Donald Trump. Fans of watching building implosions might really enjoy watching the Republican convention.

The person doing all the hiding is bama lama dip@!$%#. Hiding his entire life, school papers, birth certificate, draft registration, social security info. You name it. He's so desperate now that he's saying crazy stuff. Dipwad says that business owners didn't build their businesses, somebody else did it for them. Obviously knows nothing about business or the economy. He's desperately throwing the kitchen sink out just in hopes of distracting from his lousy record. Romney's team should put him on 'ignore' and just keep driving home each and every think the dip has done to harm this country. His diversionary tactics aren't working with anybody that has half a brain.

Clearly half a brain is a HUGE step up for you which is why you don't recognize a great President like Obama when you see one. However, I'm sure Mitt's is your choice. Do you even have 2 brain cells to rub together?

Jerry ...you are correct. Rove and Norquist won't tell Romney who they chose until convention. They want to forstall the dems from examining the the strawmanII for as long as they can.

Many repub supporters gave millions to Newt, Bachmann, Santorum, Perry, Cain Ron Paul, now have to give money to the guy they did not want. Romney, the pitiful last choice. It sticks in their throat and is pretty tough to swallow, give money to the same guy they just bet against.

That's the statement everybody with a brain was saying in 2008, 'can you even imagine that idiot being prez'. Too bad we have to experience that mistake playing out. We would have been out of the recession and on the way to prosperity about 2 years ago with any reasonably intelligent person who understands economics.

IF Romney wants to win the race, there are 2 things he MUST do.

                  1. Give the blast tax returns. He did it for McCann all 23 years. Don't whine about it.

                  2. Get Condi as VP to get the African American vote.

                  Disagree.

                  1. The tax returns are a red herring. 0 doesn't care about them. He's just using it to divert attention from his failures. Either way, it diverts. He's answered that, and should ignore and move on.

                  2. Allen West would be every bit as good a VP as Condi. Condi's ok, but West is better and he's got the military experience. And he's conservative. Has no Bush baggage.

Condi has never held any elected office. She is pro-choice. She was extremely close to George W. Bush, whom the GOP is trying to pretend never happened. I like her personally, but she'll never get the VP offer.

I totally agree on the tax returns, and many conservatives are saying the same thing. Release 10-12 years today, spend a few days dealing with them, and move on while there are still months to go. Otherwise, the questions get bigger and bigger.

I suspect Romney paid no taxes for a few years, and he doesn't want us to see that we pay taxes and he doesn't have to.

Allen West is a crazy extremist, who insists there are "communists" in Congress. Also, black voters are not stupid. They know pandering when they see it, just like women saw McCain pandering for their votes with his mistake of a running mate.

You are smoking crack starsailing. It would be nice if you actually ever addressed anyone when they threw you a question so I don't expect anything back but just for shi$s and grins I'll ask anyway.

Liberal bucket heads target Fox because it's the only conservative supporting TV network out there. They say Fox is evil and those of us who tune into fox are brainwashed. With me so far cupcake? Okay, I don't want to lose you with too many words or anything so hang in there tiger. Now if your man-cub barack has this thing in the bag because according to you Romney is a straw man for Norquist. Which by the way, no matter how many times you try to preach it or how many different posts you blather on about it...nobody gives a shi$. Seriously, nobody cares. You are quite literally the only one ranting on about it. You're not convincing anyone of a damn thing but more than that, by going back to it in nearly every post you force people to just not give a shi% Well, good job and good luck with that anyway.

Okay, so I got sidetracked where was I? Oh yeah, so barack hussein has it in the bag and Fox is just some piss-ant little network that no one takes seriously right? Come on stay with me right? Now not only is Fox a joke of a network but they are the only one out of an overwhelming number of television news outlets that lean conservative.

So you've got all these other news networks, a marginalized group of brainwashed fools who only watch Fox which is an irrelevant station and according to you barack is as good as in. Okay, I think I've got all that, does it sound about right to you Mr lover of all things straw? Do I have it down or am I missing something? That's about it? Okay, So how in the hell is this race so tight right now in so many polls? Hhmmm, come on, are they all lying so there's a big money shot surprise at the end, are they fabricating the polls to keep people interested? Please, oh wise worshiper of the straw, please enlighten all of us weak minded brainless souls that don't know anything about what the country was intended to be. Please starlsailing, please, please show us the light of your wisdom.

You are so misinformed. You really need to read past a headline on more than one or two news sources once in a while. Talk about brainwashed!

The problem with Romney picking her is that she's more presidential material than Romney is. Her inexperience and connection to the Bush era would probably be a problem though.

Let's be fair to the President, though (if it's possible). We are in the "mother of all lame duck sessions", as James Clyburn put it. Congress is going out of its way to make sure that nothing gets done to stimulate the economy. It would be more accurate to direct your ire at Congress than at the President, as most Americans are doing. If Congress help Americans get back to work, Obama wins easily. Can't allow that.

By the way, congratulations to Congress for its approval rating going up to a whopping 16% today!

I agree. Any level-headed American with any common sense should realize by now that Congress is monumentally to blame for most of Obama's perceived shortcomings. Whenever I hear some stupid Republican pointing the finger at Obama I want to smack them up the side of the head and tell them to go buy 2 brain cells they can rub together. Obama has had one of the most partisan and obstructionist governments to maneuver in history, and has done very well in spite of them. The real blame goes to the American people who gave the Republicans the House in 2010, individuals too stupid and impatient to realize that you can't undo 8 years of incompetence in 2 short years.

                    Dear Grandall and Clotho,

You too blame Bush for the huge budget deficit. I blame the Democratic controlled congress that took office in 2007. Please read below.

January 3rd 2007 was the day Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this:
January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress. At the time:

The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
                    The Unemployment rate was 4.6%

George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB GROWTH
                    Remember the day...

January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
                    BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy.

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA
And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie?
                    OBAMA and the Democrat Congress
So when someone tries to blame Bush...

REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007.... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!"
Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 &2011.
In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

Also, remember this quote when you think about the expansion of our government called Obamacare.
"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have."--Thomas Jefferson

                    Backwards logic,

president Obama had a supermajority in Congress for 2 full years, and during that time what they pushed through was so counterproductive, and unpopular, with most of the American People, they elected in a slew of Republicans, with the hope that they would at least stop the madness before the Economy was completely irrepairable. Do nothing, unfortunately is a huge step up, from the compliant, do everything Obama commands, Congress, Obama came in with, and under who's beurocratically institutuionalized legislation we may well continue to suffer for generations to come...

Mike: Romney appointed his friend and personal attorney to run his blind trust saying he has no idea how any of the money is invested even though 10 million is invested in a company run by his son, Tagg. As president it would be illegal for him to direct or have any knowledge of how his money was invested. Romney claims he doesn't. Does even the most radical supporter really believe that?

                    @bart, NYC

As debunked previously, President Obama had a 60 vote majority in the Senate for less than six months (presuming Joe Lieberman cooperated which was not always the case). The President used that period to pass the ACA which most Americans like but don't completely understand yet.

Hmmm more vetting here than done of Obama: Lets start with this: Speaking of Records: Where are President Obama's College Transcripts? What happened while in school?

President Obama may have lied on his entrance applications?
President Obama may have cheated on tests?
President Obama may have plagiarized while in school?
President Obama may have protested and publicity denounced the United States?
President Obama may have failed to disclose his actual income on financial aid applications?
President Obama may have been a C only student?
Did president Obama repeatedly fail his economics class?
Did President Obama protest against business in college?
Did President Obama rally in support of Communist Russia?
Did President Obama protest in favor of Saddam Hussein in Iraq?
Was it possible President Obama was protesting against Christian religions?
Is it possible President Obama was protesting against a woman's choice?
Was President Obama actually protesting President Clinton's policies?
Was President Obama protesting General Motors outsourcing?
Was President Obama protesting General Electrics outsourcing? Yes or No?
Did President Obama get caught doing drugs in college? His book said he did them!
Did President Obama burn the Flag?

We Voters have a right to know these pressing questions! Why is the President COVERING
UP his records? What's the Secret?

Don - your ignorance is only overshadowed by your eagerness to show how totally stupid you are - and by Ulyanov's posts.

No President has EVER been required to show his school records. Plus, Obama graduated from Columbia and Harvard - and he headed Harvard Law Review - something very few are capable of doing. And, WAY above your intelligence level.

                    Let's see:

Did you even attend High School?

                    DId you burn the flag?

                    Clearly you did HEAVY drugs!

Did you even pass first grade?

Do you even know what economics are?

Can you recognize the US flag when you see it?

Are you really so stupid you posted what you did? The resounding answer to the last question is YES!!!

If you want more TAX Returns by Romney then we on the Right want to see:

Obama's College Transcripts and what type of College Grant was given to him.

If not the stop the BS with the tax returns.

Leatherneck, he has NOT provided the requisite tax returns because he has NOT provided 2011. He also has NOT answered why so much of his liquid capital is OFFSHORE. Both of these go towards his emcumberences or lack thereof and may indicate conflicts of interest - or may not. But we as the American voting public have a RIGHT to know if there are any potential conflicts of interest in his past.

But if you're going to ask for Obama's transcripts, let's see Romney's as well. Let's see how he AVOIDED the draft in Vietnam (since he was actually old enough to be drafted AND his number actually CAME UP). Let's see the actual filing papers for Bain from 2000, 2001 and 2002 so y'all can SEE Mitt's signature on documents when he said he was not active in Bain. You ARE aware that documents WITH HIS SIGNATURE exist, right? And that means either he lied to the SEC or he is lying to the American people NOW. It also might mean that his entire governorship in Mass was ILLICIT since he may NOT have met residency requirements.

BTW, you DO know that since he is basing part of his ability to be President on his experience at Bain that EVERY SINGLE THING about Bain is OPEN and nobody can complain that it is "irrelevant" because HE is the one who has said that his Bain tenure gives him legitimacy, right? So the LIES (either when he ran for Governor, to the SEC or now) about Bain are FAIR GAME. And if he's willing to lie about BAIN, what else is he willing to lie about. In addition, if he is incapable of multitasking Bain and the Salt Lake City Olympics bid, what the heck makes people think he can multitask Foreign policy, Domestic policy and safeguarding American soil as President?

Ah. A few huge differences. Romney's tax returns are relevant; Obama's college grades are not.

Obama's college transcript is the same racist birther nonsense part deux. It feeds into the racist fears that "he's not one of us, and I bet I can prove it if we just see everything!" Romney's tax return requests are not racially motivated.

Romney is being treated exactly the same as every other Presidential candidate; Obama is being treated differently, by being told to show things no other President has (GW Bush famously refused to release his school records.) See the racist issue above.

Surely even Republicans want to know more about Romney before voting for him, right? Why would they fight so hard to prevent knowing about his tax returns?

Really, Leatherneck? You expect me to swallow an ESTIMATE as a full disclosure tax return?

See, I have had to analyze tax returns for a job in the past. I know a preliminary tax return when I see one. I know that when a "tax return" has the phrases "the taxpayers EXPECT to have a form XXXX filing requirement in 2011; however information is not currently available or estimable at this time" REPEATEDLY in a stack of papers and the tax return doesn't have a DATE PREPARED by the tax preparor that it is NOT A COMPLETE AND FILED TAX RETURN. Therefore it does NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS by definition of the IRS.

By the way ... I am a moderate Independent. I have not ONCE in my life voted a straight ticket (and how many times have YOU voted for a liberal/Democratic candidate, Leatherneck?? I suspect ...

N E V E R). I am conservative in some areas and liberal in others. I was raised from birth through my 18th birthday by my father who was a career military officer who continued to work for the DOD after he retired (24 years after his Commissioned Officer oath). I had a brother who worked DOD contracts until the day he died. I worked in the financial/housing sector for over a decade - sometimes on the purely financial aspects and sometimes in tech support. I am a small business owner, the wife of a career shipping professional, the mother of a young child who is concerned about the society we are leaving for my son.

See, the FACTS that Romney couldn't do ANYTHING in the financial sector with the twaddle you posted a link to apparently doesn''t mean anything to you. You obviously don't know the difference between a 1040 IN PROGRESS and a completed 1040. And I'd be willing to bet that you have no idea how to READ it (since you missed all the indicators that the 1040 you linked to is NOT complete) with all the requisite forms. I DO. It is not complete. It is a very rough estimate. But ... you apparently don't understand that.

You talk about Obama's college transcripts being irrelevant, but I have another question for you. How did Barrack Obama pay for college. After all, he was from a poor family and he attended some pretty elite schools. The real question is how did he pay for it. I heard some unconfirmed reports that applied for a grant as a foreign student. If that is true, that is a crime that should prevent him from serving in the highest office in the land. I think that is relevant information to know. What is he really hiding by not releasing those documents?
