Michelle Obama in Florida: 'We need to keep moving forward'

Orlando, Fla. -- Speaking before a crowd of more than 2,000 Tuesday at the University of Central Florida, First Lady Michelle Obama listed President Barack Obama’s initiatives during his first term – including his recent executive order to stop deporting undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children – and said those policies are all “on the line” in November’s election.

“In the end, it all boils down to one simple question. Are we going to continue the change we begun, the progress we made?” Obama said. “Are we going to let everything that we fought for to just slip away?”

“We cannot turn back now,” she added. “We need to keep moving forward.”

The reference to President Barack Obama’s announcement last month that he had moved to block the deportation of hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants was perhaps an indication of how crucial Florida – rich in Latino votes – has become in an increasingly tight election.

“He knows and believes that it is time to stop denying responsible, young people opportunities in this country because they’re the children of undocumented immigrants. It’s time to stop that,” Obama said of her husband’s support for the DREAM act, which would offer a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who have graduated from high school.

The measure has been held up in Congress since 2010.

According to pool reports earlier in the day, Obama made a quick surprise visit to  the Blanchard Park YMCA in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood in Orlando. Many children recognized her – one girl covered her grin with both hands but could not hide it. Another asked for a hug.

At the university, Obama spoke for about 25 minutes inside the basketball arena.  A state fire official estimated there were 2,251 people in the bleachers and on the gym floor.

There was no mention of the president’s opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, or of class and money – prominent themes in the attack ads released by both sides.

Still, Obama made a careful pitch of her husband as an ordinary man, whose origins as the son of a single mother “who struggled to put herself through school and pay the bills” leavens his judgment in office.

“I have seen how as president you are going to get all kind of advice for all kinds of people,” Obama said. “But at the end of the day, let me tell you when it comes time to make that decision as president, all you have to guide you are your life experiences. All you have to direct you are your values.”

"We all know who my husband is, don’t we?" Obama added. "We all know what Barack Obama stands for, don’t we?”

moochelle is RIGHT. Clearly right ! She needs to keep moving. Yes, back to the Rezko Mansion in Chi Town. We don't really need her stinking up the White House do we?

Valerie, Marion and Moochelle what a great combination. Three people with less than half a brain between them. Oh don't misunderstand. Valerie, born in Iran has been a perfect slum lord in Chi Town. She also hired' Moochelle into a non-position at a Chicago Hospital for 300 thousand bucks per year and Marion, well she runs the 'roost’. Ho ho ho !

She suggests things for moochelle to have barry do .

This triumvirate of women working as the REAL PRESIDENT are so proud... they are just sad that they cannot boast about their power and control over barry.

But in a few months the frosting will be off the cake and we will all see that barry had no clothes and no balls.

Have you been to the Border and i am not talking about the check points I am talking about the wide open spaces. I have and in my three days there I observedat least 5 groups of 10 to 15 people moving across the border and I was not there looking for them. So maybe you should make a visit to TX or AZ before telling people to take their meds.

Giving work permits to millions of illegals when you are ineffective in helping unemployed citizens/taxpayers is certainly a bit of an insult to the unemployed American worker.

Think the jobs report and unemployment published this week was bad. Wait until they add those millions of illegals with work permits to those statistics.

No matter which way you "SPIN IT"! LAWS ARE LAWS. If you are caught speeding, you get a warning, maybe a ticket, if you are caught shoplifting, you can be arrested, make restitution, even may have to serve some 'time'. If you rob a store, assult another person, you are breaking the law and are arrested. When you come into this country, the United States of America, without the proper documentation, illegally......YOU ARE BREAKING A LAW. That was voted on, adopted, and supported by the citizens of our country. NOW.....what part of breaking the law of the land do you not understand Mr. President! Take a look around.....the middle class of America, the real bulk of tax paying citizens are tired, of the huddled masses that are taxed to support! Enough is enough!

      #35.1 - Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:50 AM EDT

That would be great if it wer true. According to DHS statistics, the Obama administration deported more illegals in FY2011 than were deported in any previous year. However, through the past fiscal year, DHS statistics show that the Bush administration deported 2X the number of llegals the Obama administration has.

But Bart, here are some fun facts that you can celebrate about Obama.

Mr Obama has MORE illegal alien relatives, evading deportation than any previous POTUS

Mr Obama has granted MORE illegals deferred action from deportation and made them eligible for work permits than he has deported.

Reality is not as simple as "laws are laws". The fact is, these teabaggers hate intelligent, law abiding people who are in this country, solely because they haven't properly filled out all the required documentation. Wow, how terrible.

      #35.3 - Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:02 PM EDT

No "clotho", it really is that simple. Laws are just exactly that, LAWS. We, as United States citizens, are bound by these laws by virtue of the fact that we are legal American citizens. By your reasoning, if you're not a citizen, you don't have to follow the laws? Really? It really doesn't matter if you swim, fly, crawl, or drive across the border, if you don't have the properly filled out documentation, you are in this country illegally. Period. I really don't understand why this is so terribly difficult for you silly liberals to understand.

      Sorry Clotho -

Your post is simply rubbish, unfortunately.

"Teabaggers hate intelligent, law abiding citizens who are in this country" - you could not be further from the truth when you say that, and by the way, that required documentation you mention - that is what would make them LEGAL. Since they have not, they are by definition not law abiding.

See how simple that reality is? Laws really are laws - that you disagree with them does not change the fact that they re LAWS.

We know what your husband stands for and what he has said. Obama told The Today Show’s Matt Lauer on February 1, 2009
“A year from now I think people are going to see that we're starting to make some progress. But there's still going to be some pain out there. If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition.”

Jan. 25, 2010 Obama told ABC News, "I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president."

                  June 13, 2011

“Shovel-ready was not as … uh .. shovel-ready as we expected.” The Council, led by GE’s Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter. Thats good Mr. President. Spend over 800 billion of our money and joke about it, getting laughs from your pal at GE who is "out sourcing jobs to China".

I doubt Mitt or Anne would have fared so well as President Obama and First Lady Michelle if they hadn't been born into wealthly and infulential families. Neither have the inner strength or fortitude....they've been given everything on a sliver platter, never had to struggle, never had to overcome the odds....they is why they believe they are "entitled" to win the election....they've been entitled all their lives.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle make Americans proud....and we will be thankful when they are re-elected.

I agree, The Obamas have lived the American Dream that many who come to this country are seeking and with hard work and good education most do find. How anyone believes that children who were brough here and have lived here and only know this country as their home should be sent to their parent's country is ludicrous. Illegal immigration has been going on long before this president was even in the senate. Why didn' McCain and the other republicans do something about it then? If it was not such a big discussion during this president's administration I would be willing to think that the republicans were more serious about the issue. At this time, I believe it is more of just another way to insult the president.

Dragon: so, your comments indicate that you believe that people of wealth don't have struggles, never have to overcome odds and they feel "entitled"....so I guess the President's consistent message of class warfare has certainly worked on you...it's the first time in my life that people get beat up and distained for their success and wealth...but that's only one reason that I am NOT voting for President Obama.

juanita: Yes, people with wealth have some struggles, but not like the average American...you think Mitt or Anne every had to worry about paying rent or a mortgage? How about worrying about putting food on the table for their children? How about being able to afford healthcare? How about being worried because you were laid off and can't find another job to support yourself or your family? How about being worried that you are sick, or have a sick child but can't stay home to take care of it because you might lose your job? How about having to work multiple jobs in order to pay the bills?

Mitt and Anne have never had to worry about those things. Anne has suffered some medical issues but never, ever, ever had to worry about if her insurance would cover the procedures or prescriptions....did she? Never, ever, had to worry about paying the co-pays...did she?

This is not class warfare, this is the simple truth. I do not have distain for people of wealth, if they are honest about being weathly and not having to deal with the day-to-day issues average Americans have to deal with....if they do not pretend they can relate to average Americans.

And if they don't put their money into overseas accounts to avoid US taxes.

Don't forget $70,000 tax exemptions for the horse Ann uses to keep her MS under control. A terrible disease that usually decimates families. I know of husbands that simply left their wives everything and walked away when they found out she had MS. I know of wives that have struggled to keep their husbands out of nursing homes and still earn a living. The Romneys have never had to struggle on those levels.

Sorry...even if you don't admit it...you agree with Obama and is on-going diatribe of pitting the middle class and poor against the rich. Me, I don't want to vote for anyone that promotes the gov't taking care of every aspect of our lives...and that is who Obama is.

Which Obama are you talking about. How exactly is the government taking care of every aspect of your life?

How is having to buy PRIVATE health insurance the government taking care of you?

You seems to have a created an Obama that doesn't exist.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Republicans and conservatives are running against an imaginary Obama that doesn't actually exist. Not the real man.

                        Bart -

Perhaps the Obama that has now successfully made it mandatory for all to purchase insurance...

Now this is the important part, so pay attention - if you cant afford it, the government will help you do it.

Hows that for the Obama that people are talking about?

And Clotho - fortunately , the policies of the real Obama are bad enough so that no imagination is actually required to stand against his policies or direction.
