Donald Trump to get 'Statesman of the Year' award just before GOP convention

CONCORD, N.H.-- On the eve of the Republican National Convention this August, real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump will accept an accolade of his own just an hour south of Tampa as he receives the 2012 "Statesman of the Year" award from the Sarasota Republican Party.

An invitation to the event, which serves as a fundraiser for the Sarasota GOP, shows ticket prices ranging from $150 for general admission to $1,000 for a private meeting with the outspoken Trump at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota.

Trump spokesman Michael Cohen says Trump is "honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award," which was bestowed in 2011 on former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. Then-presidential candidate Herman Cain delivered the keynote address at that ceremony.

Despite controversy surrounding his persistent questioning of President Barack Obama's American citizenship, Trump has emerged as a prominent surrogate for presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney; recording robo-calls and conducting interviews for Romney's in early primary states, and raising money on the candidate's behalf.

In May, Trump hosted a fundraiser for Romney at Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, and on June 28 he attended another fundraising event for the former Massachusetts governor in New York City. A heavily promoted "Dine with the Donald" event, in which donors could win a contest to have a meal with Trump and Romney, was rescheduled, according to aides to both men.

Despite all this, the two have not campaigned together -- or even been seen in public together --  since Romney accepted Trump's endorsement in February, fueling speculation that the Romney campaign would prefer to keep its distance from its supporter's more controversial remarks.

Trump's presence just an hour down Interstate 75 from the Tampa convention, set to begin the following Monday, could put an unwanted spotlight on his birtherism at a time when most Republicans would rather talk about almost anything else.

Cohen, however, said he expected Trump to take an active and visible role in the convention.

"It would seem obvious that Donald Trump will play a role in the Tampa convention, as his massive popularity, reflected in this recent award, shows what an asset he would be in making the convention into an even greater success."

Really Garrett .... From the world resources of NBC News ....Some repub club in Sarasota giving Trump the "Statesman of the Year" is the best you guys can do?

Well …. In other big news …..

(CNSNews.com) –

"Speaking in Sandusky, Ohio on July 5, President Barack Obama used the first-person pronoun "I" and "me" a combined 117 times in a speech that lasted about 25 minutes and 32 seconds."

Obama -

"I want you to know that when I ran in 2008, I said I wasn't going to be a perfect man and I certainly wasn't going to be the perfect president, but I'd always tell you what I thought. I'd always tell you were I stood. And most of all, I would wake up every single day thinking about you …."

Obama mentions himself 117 times to tell them …. He wakes up thinking about them?

This guy is really funny until you come here to FR and realize people actually fall for it.

But back to the article ....

Sheesh … Who are they trying to kid. The guy whose only accomplishment in life was writing 2 books about himself mentioning himself every 13 seconds ….. is not news.

How is this ….. Pigs Can Fly

If that were true, seems like that would be news.

Well ….. it is true.

Yep, Obama's (Same source btw) …

"Department of Transportation published its 'Nondiscrimination on the Basis Disability in Air Travel: Draft Technical Assistance Manual' in the Federal Register on July 5, providing guidance that allows swine on airplanes if they are to be determined service animals."

Really …. Obama's federal government is ordering that 300 lb. pot-bellied pigs must be allowed on airplanes if some nut says it is their emotional support - their "psychiatric service animal" ….!!!!!

Sheesh …..Who are they trying to kid …. This isn't news …. The Obama administration does senselessly stupid, crazy crap like this every day.

OK Garrett – You win Trump /GOP blah blah blah blah

Wow, bob, even for you, that last post is rubbish. Are you positing that your President PERSONALLY ordered that Pot Belly Service Pigs be allowed on airplanes? How many Pot Belly Service Pigs do you imagine we are talking about in this nation?

I would suppose that you would be counting the use of "I" or personal reference with Romney's speeches, right? Or is that just too non partisan for you?

You sound petty and ridiculous, bob.

That Trump is receiving any kind of award from the Republicans is a measure of how far they have slid off into the land of delusion. The fringe nuts control that party and it will come back to haunt them.

Thank God. And I thought the GOP was creeping dangerously close to relevance until this happened! Trump really has this nasty habit of short-circuiting the GOP if he thinks the spotlight is being torn from him.

There is a growing number of politicians showing up to GOP functions with bags over their heads. Being a GOP'er nowadays carries about as much prestige as having your daughter busted for prostitution. Thank you for providing the story on that, Pat. Excellent observations as usual.

I think this polarized extremism is what will sink the GOP in 2012. People will be looking to atone for what they did in 2010. I can't tell you how many GOP'ers I know that intend to stay home on election day, and my friend Jim, known on these boards as UAWJim quit the GOP a couple years ago.

A lot of people have, both high and low profile.

Fascism doesn't suit America. We fought against it once before, and left Europe in smoldering ruins because of it. Once America sees that the repubs are trying to finish the work Hitler started they will respond the way Freedom-loving people do when their liberties are being assailed.

People don't like being yoked by corporations, and when pushed they WILL push back.

People are tired of fascist republikans and will be cleaning house in November.

McCotter figured this out,....and got out early.

Trump is to receive the "Statesman of the Year" award for what?

Is it because he has taken the side of the birthers?

Is it because he continually says disparaging remarks about our president?

Or is it because he is a well known person with deep pockets supporting Willard?

I believe it is the later. The probable reason that Alderman didn't receive the award for all of the millions he has donated is because he isn't as well known as Trump so the "award" would be wasted by bestowing it on him.

The GOP was fast becoming a bad joke. Now they have Willard as their presumptive presidential candidate. They have arrived at their final destination of complete lunacy.

Mo.........

I have no doubt that Trump has a lot of money. What Trump is worth is unknown to me and I really couldn't care less.

As far as him doing a "reality" show, it is, in my opinion, to help bolster his unquenchable thirst for fame. The man is probably the biggest egomaniac in the country. The man gets to take center stage every week as the 'all important one' who directs the shows agenda and then decides who to fire. He also gets to "showcase" some of his children.

Does any of that make for credibility in the political world? Only for the GOP. They place their political priorities in this order: Money, Oil, Corporations, Lying and a continuing Separation of Classes.

Amy as you can see Mitt is a fluke too. Couldn't finish my comment. My neighbor knocked on the door distracting me. They are giving me a bar-b- que for my birthday today.

Mitt needs to denounce Trump for his birthism.

PS: Today is also important to me. It was the day the Declaration of Independence was read.

The Original Celebration

The very first celebration of American Independence was on July 8th 1776 when the declaration of Independence was read aloud and the Liberty bell tolled in Philadelphia. The following year in 1777, July 4th was celebrated in grand style guns were fired in the morning and at dusk, ships were docked and bedecked with red, white and blue banners, parades, prayer and speeches marked the day.

in spite of all the caterwauling from the left at ths site about nonsense like this article, we must remember that it all comes down to the economy in November as it has in most elections in the past.

the economy under Mr. Obama's "leadership" is nothing of which he can be proud.

recent news shows that more people are out of work today than when he took office; fewer women are employed today than when he took office; more African Ameicans are unemployed now than when he took office; the deficits he has run during his term have been greater than any other administration; he has added more debt than any other administration; he has ordered the murder of an Ameican citizen without any due process; he took GM through a contrived bankruptcy that rewarded unions, penalized investors and gave GM a huge tax write off; managed to facilitate the sale of Chrysler to Fiat; lost billions in taxpayer money on poor investment choices (like Solyndra); takes credit for a health insurance bill opposed by the majority of Americans; appointed a job czar who has outsourced thousands of jobs.

think of the damage this amateur can inflict on our country with four more years that will include more flexibility as he promised the Russians - that statement alone is scary enough to warrant his dismissal.

GOPis-

"Fascism doesn't suit America. We fought against it once before, and left Europe in smoldering ruins because of it. Once America sees that the repubs are trying to finish the work Hitler started...."

Here is a re-post reponding to another ignorant bigot on this subject. (Sorry - You aren't worth wasting more time on the subject.)

Thanks for the opportunity to address the issue again.

US Navy "Soup Nazis" Disabled, Veteran - Retired,

Day after day you come to FR with your cut-in-paste characterizations of the right as Fascist and Nazi. You use deliberate misrepresentations of the right and convulted exceptions in an effort to suggest a rule. And by doing so, you throw out the Nazi label, an ignorant marginalization so repugnant that it suggests no need to give the time of day. Just dismiss. Like Seinfield's "Soup Nazis", if you don't approve, or like - they are automatically dismissed. Problem with that analogy though, is that while Seinfield's character is comical, your characterization is malicious - as demeaning as the other N Word.

With regard to Fascist and GOP/TP: The root word of Fascism is fasces, translated as a bundle of sticks signifying the strength of the union - a bundle of sticks are much stronger than the individual sticks symbolizing the power / strength of government over the power / strength of the individual. It is related to the Italian word fascio of which the most pertinent meaning is "labor union".

Does the GOP/TP advocate big government and labor unions, or some other party?

Nazi was the original National Socialist Germans Workers Party. The operative words are Socialist and Workers Party (Unions). Same Question.

The Nazi rose to power exploiting anticapitalist rhetoric they indisputably believed. They believed in the notion of ending class distinction. Sound like what you guys say about the GOP/TP, or sound like some other party?

The NAZIs believed in national health care, abortion, gun control. Same question.

The Nazi were anti- church, even doing away with nativity scenes. Sound familiar, is that the GOP/TP, or some other party.

The Nazi believed health care was not a private matter, were antismoking, promoted organic foods, believed in homepathy and herbal remedies and public health drives that foreshadowed today's crusades against junk foods. Are the GOP/TP doing that, or some other party.

Almost every social issue was the same as the progressives of today. Big government, anti-capitalism, belief in the state not the individual.

The Hitler / Der Fuher (The Leader) was the Nazi Party. Does the Tea Party even have a leader?

His greatest gift was his oratory skill. He campaigned on change, movement. Sound like Palin, Bachman, or more like someone else?

Hitler was a revolutionary, a tranformative leader? Who said they were going to be a transformative President? Change, not going back to the past, move forward, etc. Is this the GOP/TP, or what you guys espouse everyday?

All of the above are marks of modern liberalism, the daughter of American Progressivism - the sister of Fascism and Nazism.

Status quo is the mark of conservatives. In the case of America today, the status quo is to conserve - Conserve the the victories and legacy of a previous revolution.

You look around and see Nazis everywhere. They don't exist except in exceptionally small numbers of fringe sicko-s, the skin heads that no one acknowledges. But there are surviving relatives, many of the same genetic make-up. To see those with that family resembalance - they are easy - look in the mirror, Navy - THEN CUT THE NAZI CRAP.

None of that was a hint?

You can't be this obtuse ... there has to be one lib who can fog a mirror and think at the same time.

This is your usual schtick.

No ... my usual schtick would have been to spend 500-600 words detailing Obama's pathetic speech ... point out him talking about when he first ran state Senate, and were he traveled, who he met, what he learned, ..... talking about his grandparents, what they did, what they taught him ... his mother ... Michelle, her parents - her brother ... Bo said hi - btw .... his realizations, middle class, the basic bargain ... how he is a champion for the middle class .... how he gets up everyday thinking of them and fighting for them .... blah blah blah

Then I would have asked ... so what has he done for the middle class ... how has he improved their lives ... what has he achieved after being their president for 3 years - That more American middle class are in the ranks of the poor than anytime in history, that more middle class have been moved to food stamps than anytime in history, that almost 50% of all households have been reduced to now receiving at least one form federal assistance .... that the middle class has lost 38% of its wealth, all occurring since Obama has been in office!

And this guy mentions himself every 13 seconds ... he won't / can't talk about his record because his record is so pathetic - he has to talk about when he ran for the state senate, his grandparents, his dog..

Nope that is my usual schtick. You know I usually put up the damning facts, I argue how inept - what a disaster he is. Simply making fun of his narcissism is not enough usually.

Make ridiculous accusations, and then try to bail on them.

Are you stupid? Obama didn't make that speech, the text isn't real ... the DOT didn't make that registration on that date? Gosh ... why don't you put up a supportable rebuttal ... you don't want to count the "I"s and "me"s yourself from the text?

Me bailing? When have I ever bailed ... my stuff is all there, not hidden like the libs do - mind putting that up?

Daily Kos:

One of the right's most respected legal thinkers, Richard Posner, revealed in an NPR interview this week that his frustrations with today's Republican party have driven him to become "less conservative."

"I've become less conservative since the Republican Party started becoming goofy," he said.

Posner...speculated that the leaks about the deliberations over the national health care law — which are apparently designed to discredit Chief Justice John Roberts' opinion upholding the law — would backfire. "I think these right-wingers who are blasting Roberts are making a very serious mistake,"

"Because if you put [yourself] in his position ... what's he supposed to think? That he finds his allies to be a bunch of crackpots? Does that help the conservative movement? I mean, what would you do if you were Roberts? All of a sudden you find out that the people you thought were your friends have turned against you, they despise you, they mistreat you, they leak to the press. What do you do? Do you become more conservative? Or do you say, 'What am I doing with this crowd of lunatics?' Right? Maybe you have to re-examine your position."

____________

The GOP IS full of crackpots, with Trump at the head of the line. Who is there to like in that party?

Surely not Trump. He's a liar.

There's McConnell, Palin, Christie, Walker, Cantor, Walsh, Boehner?

Give Trump the award. He needs attention. And a better barber.

"One of the right's most respected legal thinkers" is reduced to a PROGRESSIVE BLOG?

Good one.

"I've become less conservative since the Republican Party started becoming goofy," he said.

Yea ... great legal thinkers who have spent their lives studying law, the courts, decisions, briefs and opinions .... don't base their values on interpretation of the Constitution ..... they base their principles on the "goofy" factor.

(Btw - #1 Do libs and this idiot really not have a clue that there is a difference between a conservative and a republican ... and #2 Is this ignorance just plain ignorance or willful ignorance?)

Posner...speculated that the leaks about the deliberations over the national health care law — which are apparently designed to discredit Chief Justice John Roberts' opinion upholding the law — would backfire. What a dumbass .... lazy one too!

Average of polls reveal Obama's approvals actually took a dip AFTER the decision.

But more importantly - the Supreme's approval DROPPED 12 POINTS!

The Court was the only body with a significant degree of approval and respect.

Roberts blew that out of the water.

[...when you believe that CNS is a reputable source for news.]

Well, b0b has posted crap from WND as well as other "severely conservative" sources and tried to pass it off as a reputable "news"...

But what I thought was pretty odd is that b0b would berate NPR as a credible news source. Evidently b0b doesn't know (or more likely doesn't care) that NPR is used by mostly SANE conservatives and independents to actually get unbiased news.

Then I thought that wasn't odd at all...seems b0b is more concerned with bull@!$%#-filled, Obama-hating rants and 4th grade mathematics than actually focusing on what is really going on in his party: It's self-destruction from within.

Maybe he should watch Bill Moyers, PBS NewsHour, or Religion and Ethics tonight on his local PBS station for a little insight into what's REALLY going on.

Actual news and the truth really get tea people like Bob angry. They get up in the morning anxious to repeat all the lies they've been told and get more lies to repeat tomorrow. Lying is what the tea people Koch republicans do. Sad thing is the citizen united bought media won't call them on their lies and in most cases they repeat them as truth also. We won't be a great country again until the media starts doing their job again and starts reporting facts and debunking all the lies.

[Fairness Doctrine.lol Man have you lost your mind?]

Yea, 'cause being exposed to a diversity of viewpoints is oh, so terrible...from Wiki:

The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Commission's view, honest, equitable and balanced.

The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows, or editorials. The doctrine did not require equal time for opposing views but required that contrasting viewpoints be presented.

The main agenda for the doctrine was to ensure that viewers were exposed to a diversity of viewpoints. In 1969 the United States Supreme Court upheld the FCC's general right to enforce the Fairness Doctrine where channels were limited. But the courts did not rule that the FCC was obliged to do so. The courts reasoned that the scarcity of the broadcast spectrum, which limited the opportunity for access to the airwaves, created a need for the Doctrine. However, the proliferation of cable television, multiple channels within cable, public-access channels, and the Internet have eroded this argument, since there are plenty of places for ordinary individuals to make public comments on controversial issues at low or no cost

"It would seem obvious that Donald Trump will play a role in the Tampa convention, as his massive popularity, reflected in this recent award, shows what an asset he would be in making the convention into an even greater success."

Oh please, god, please put the Donald front and center at the convention. Nothing would help seal the Presidents re-election more than over exposing this ego maniac moron.

Should be more like

"It would seem obvious that Donald Trump will play a role in the Tampa convention, as his massive popularity ego, reflected in this recent campaign for this award, shows what an asset he would be in makeing of himself at the convention propelling the President's campaign into an even greater success."

Thanks! Obama 2012!

Let me get this straight: Sarasota Republican party will put on a fundraiser for themselves. Gives out the Statesman of the Year award to Trump at their dinner.

Then Mr Cohen ,Trump's publicist says," this pretigious award is proof that Trump is popular and asset to the GOP National convention and can contribute to its success.

I thought the GOP convention was all about nominating Romney and his VP and give a rousing speech!!

Poor Romney, who will rain on this parade?

The list is getting growing: Santorum, Ron Paul and his delegates, and now Trump.

This convention will be a hoot.

Trump will keep the clown show going at the convention.

Trump needs to realize, it's the media that keeps giving him attention. Every time the media can find a worthless story about Trump they talk about it 24/7, every time they do their revenue goes way up, because the tea people Koch republicans worship nuts like Trump.

"Statesman of the Year Award", more like, the Combover Clown Award, Donalds biggest fear is the wind, thats why he has to use a can of hair spray to keep his hair in place or it would fly over to the other side of his head, pull him over!. Gotta love the GOP Circus!

If Trump passes for a statesman, I guess the racist birth-ism movement is about as statesman as the republicans get.

Republicans the party that can't ask the rich for a small surcharge to put Americans back to work and improve our economy. Yet they have no problem asking these same rich for hundreds of millions of dollars to convince you to vote against yourself and vote instead for the 1% and their tax cuts above all else.

Are the tax cuts for the rich 1% more important than jobs and the American economy?

They are if you vote for a republican.

Mr Trump, please stay out of the limelight. I know it will be a blow to your enormous ego, but please...believe me...we can throw Obama out of office without you getting in the way or becoming even more of a distraction.

I wrote an editorial a few months ago about what a circus the GOP primary was. I was just looking back over it and thinking how dated it seems, how much more seriously we're all taking the corpoarate pandering, willful ignorance, and unabashed doublethink of the Right these days.

Then I read this article, and I started heating up the popcorn; the GOP convention will be The Circus Redux.

Haley Barbour is just another Southern bigot who, as his parting shot to Mississippians, pardons 208 inmates, which in itself isn't so reprehensible...what IS reprehensible is that 14 of those pardons were convicted murderers. Seems he has a penchant for this type of behavior, as he's done it in the past...Statesman indeed...
