Subscribe to RSSPresident Obama greets U.S. service members while hosting a naturalization ceremony Wednesday to declare them American citizens.
WASHINGTON – In a moving naturalization ceremony in the East Room of the White House, 25 active members of the military declared their allegiance to the United States and became U.S. citizens on Wednesday.
The group hailed from countries ranging from the Ukraine to Cameroon to Honduras. President Barack Obama used the event to highlight his recent immigration announcement and renew the call for comprehensive immigration reform.
The president proclaimed that “America’s success demands comprehensive immigration reform” and that a “Dream Act,” legislation that would give young illegal immigrants a path toward permanent residency, was still necessary.
“For just as we remain a nation of laws, we have to remain a nation of immigrants. That's why as another step forward we're lifting the shadow of deportation…from deserving young people who were brought to this country as children. That's why we still need a Dream Act to keep talented young people who want to contribute to our society and serve our country,” the president said.
He used the 25 men and women in uniform before him as an example of how the American dream “endures for all those…who are willing to work hard, play by the rules and meet their responsibilities.”
The president also declared the naturalization ceremony as the “perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday.” He also said of the group, “All of you did something profound. You chose to serve. You put on the uniform of a country that was not yet fully your own in a time of war. Some of you deployed into harm's way. You displayed the values that we celebrate every Fourth of July: Duty, responsibility and patriotism.”
Last month, Obama announced a policy to stop deporting young illegal immigrants who entered the United States as children if they meet certain requirements.
After administering the Oath of Allegiance, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano highlighted efforts by the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to expedite the naturalization process for members of the military.
“Since 2001, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has naturalized over 80,000 members of the armed forces, bringing immigration services to our troops wherever they serve. And since 2009, we have offered non-citizen enlistees the opportunity to naturalize before completing basic training so they can graduate as American citizens,” she said.
It currently takes a few weeks to a few months for an immigrant who has enlisted in the U.S. military to become naturalized citizen. However, one must be a legal immigrant to enlist, therefore the president’s embargo on deporting young illegal immigrants does not give them an opportunity to enlist and find a way to citizenship via that pathway.

As long as there are Republicans in charge of Congress, there will be no immigration reform. Republicans know that as soon as they make it so the people they have been exploiting can be here, legally, working legally, then they won't be able to profit. Also, if the people who have been here for many, many years, working, paying taxes and taking care of this country are made citizens, then the GOP will lose its control of the South and go away, as they should. Immigrants are just like blacks were in the 1960's. The same group of hate which does not want them to be citizens did not want blacks to have full rights as citizens.

During his campaign for President, President Obama said that deficit spending was bad and he vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. I heard him say that on television. The last full year of the Bush administration was 2008 and the federal deficit for that year was 458.55 billion dollars. The last full year of President Obama's first administration is 2012. So for the President to keep his promise the 2012 federal deficit cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars. According to the President's own White House, the 2012 federal deficit is predicted to exceed 1.3 trillion dollars. That means that the federal government is expected to spend more than 1 trillion dollars more than what the President promised the American people. The White House is also predicting huge deficits for at least a decade to come. I estimate that this additional trillion dollars the federal government is having to borrow this year is going to end up costing the tax payers more than 9 trillion dollars before it is all paid back in 170 years. The President has yet to provide a plan that details how the federal government is going to repay all of this money that it has been borrowing.
What a tool the pretender in the White House is to compare the dream of 25 brave men and womans who immigrated legally to the US, served in our military, and now have become citizens; to millions of illegal aliens who are looking for a handout and to be rewarded for breaking our laws instead of being held accountable.

The Geneva Convention, contrary to popular understanding, is principally designed to protect innocent non combatants - not necessarily to provide protections for the armed combatants.

there are many reasons that led GM to the financial collapse, and worker wage is not one of them or at least not significant enough to be mentioned. You need to study Toyota vs. GM before you point fingers at the employees -employees didn't cause this. Executives' poor decisions did: mishandling of Fiat (bought for $2.4 billion but sold for $2 billion), selling control of GMAC, etc. I can keep going on but the point is, the execs are paid lots of money for a reason - they make short-term, and long-term decision that influence the being of the company. They pick the course - like a captain of the ship.

I could not agree more with the President. These 25 have more than earned their citizenship. However, what I disagree is when he says:

This is the problem with the politics in our country currently. Personally I wish a happy 4th to all citizens of this great country. Independence wasn't just won for liberals, it wasn't just won for republicans, it was one for all of us (even Fiesty! :) ). It would be nice if there was one or two days out of the year that politics and party could be put aside to where we all consider each other equal aside from beliefs, politics, opinions, religion, race, etc.

Any of them that saw combat fought with and kept citizens alive because they were there to back them up. Anothe fun fact - for every illegal deported by the Obama Administration to date either by executive order or prosecutial discreation deferred decision an equal number of illegals became eligible to apply for a work permit, and can then compete against America's unemployed workers for jobs.

Real "Tea Baggers" seek to repeal all immigrations rules other than criminal background checks so that the vast majority of current and future illegal aliens would become legal thus eliminating the controversy.

Over 45 million people come legally to the US every year, some on tourist visas, some on student or work visas. Over 1 million are granted green cards & over 700,000 become citizens - EVERY year. If it is a humanitarian issue then address that problem in their HOME country. Without a secure border you will lose your sovereignty and security. Republicans failed to cut Social Security and everything else when Clinton was in office because there was a balanced budget and the deficit was getting paid. So even you should be able to see that the Bush tax cuts and the (now) enormous deficit was planed from the beginning to hold workers (middle and lower class) dependent on and to the will and demands of what ever (the wealthy paid off) corrupt Republican politicians push on Americans. So there is our freedom, there are politicians working on behalf of the minority and not the majority of the American people. Stand by to have what you own to be taken to include what ever you might think you have earned or you believe is a secure and safe retirement pension. The excuse in the 1920's and 30's was the very same excuse when the bottom fell out of their 401K plan and why everyone who lost everything to include their savings. "Oops, my bad, we made bad investments, sorry workers lost everything".
In short, individual financial security, workers rights and a balanced budget means freedom of and for the American people. If everything you have or own is dependent on corporations, businesses and the Stock Market then you are not free and the only rights you have are the ones corrupt politicians will allow you to have. You must bow down to the will of the wealthy and if you don't then they will take it away from you.
And then you missed my comment, neither Barack or Romney served and neither really deserve to be Commander in Chief. But if I had to choose then I would choose the one who IS working in behalf of working Americans and not the wealthy and not holding workers pensions over them to continue the tax breaks that created this mess and refuse to restore workers security.

While you are at it, if you are going to be consistent and honest, how about fussing at those states that refuse to use e-Verify to identify illegal immigrants when apply for a job? It's free, but oddly enough at least three of the states that are doing a lot of fussing (Arizona, Texas, and Florida) refuse to use it or completely implement it. Per Gov. Scott, using e-Verify puts his state at a "competitive disadvantage in business." In other words, Florida businesses want illegal immigrants there.
"Submit a budget"? That's an untruth - per law President Obama has submitted a budget for FY 20120, FY 2011, FY 2012, and FY 2013 (all searchable on www. whitehouse.gov) . Fact is that Congress did not pass a budget resolution in either (calendar year) 2009 or 2010. One was passed in April of 2011 because of the danger of government shut down.
"Pick and choose which laws to comply with"? President G. W. Bush's 130 signing statements, where he specified that he felt the bills he was signing into law had no authority over the Presidency, affected over 1100 parts of different laws. Included in his signing statements were de jure opinions that the Commander-in-Chief has the power to authorize the arrest, confinement, and holding American citizens indefinitely - without charges being place.

DHS statistics show that the Bush administration deported 2x the number of illegals the Obama administartion has.
BTW you do know that Republican led House passed a budget for both FY2012 and FY2013, but the Democrat controlled Senate has failed to act. The Senate has not passed a Budget in 1,171 days.
The budget process has become a joke since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were fought and paid for outside the official budget process. They were never included in the budgets submitted to the congress which is how they added to the deficit.
bfitz, actually picking on the President not submitting a budget is really a bad choice since it was Bush who wiped out the balanced one that was in place, ballooned the deficit exponentially through the tax breaks for the wealthy and two wars. The fact is that one main reason for executive power is to act in the event of congressional legislative inability to act and with the "Just Say No", "Take No Responsibility For Crashing the Economy", "The I'll Hold Back Your Retirement Pensions for the Sake of Wealthy Tax Breaks", "The Refuse to Pass Any Jobs Bill" Republican Party.
