Romney to travel to Israel

Mitt Romney will travel to Israel this summer on a leg of a foreign trip for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee before the height of the fall campaign season.

The Romney campaign confirmed a New York Times report on a long-suspected trip by Romney to Israel. While the exact timing of the trip is unclear, a previous campaign aide told NBC News that it's likely that he'll travel to Israel from London, where the GOP nominee will head at the end of this month for the opening of the Summer Olympics.

Romney's approach toward Israel has been one of the main areas in which he's distinguished himself from President Obama on foreign policy issues. Romney had previously accused Obama of having thrown Israel "under the bus" for outlining preconditions of a peace process. Romney's also been hawkish toward the prospect of an Iranian nuclear program, a major concern of the Israeli government.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP's presidential nominee in 2008, made a similar trip to Israel. A visit to Israel has traditionally been seen as a way to appeal to evangelical voters in the Republican base, and perhaps pick off Jewish voters who tend to favor Obama.

A major donor to pro-Romney efforts, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, has been a major proponent of Israel's, and has cited it as a motivation for defeating Obama this fall. Moreover, Romney has maintained a relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both of them worked decades ago at Boston Consulting.

Lovely!

You have to be crazy to believe Mr. Adelson doesn't expect something in return for the gazillions he's buying the election with...

...which, of course, explains the $3.1 Billion in military assistance for Israel that the President put in his proposed 2013 budget.

How many ways will he find to embarrass the United States? Stay tuned for laugh after laugh.

"Good morning Israel"

"Today I announce that if I become President America's Treasury is closed to Israel, and that we are recalling all American troops and sailors from not only Israel, but from every military outpost across the entire planet."

"South Korea and Japan will be on their own too,....hell,....we're even going to close McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Instead of spending all of America's loot on the military chaperoning of the planet we will divert the funds into alternative energy, college for all our kids, universal health care, and a bunch of plowshares kinda' stuff."

Sheldon Adelson, a proponent of Israel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are working in tangent. Romney will do anything to get elected; including advocating war or a big time flip flop if necessary.

Also, Bibi will use every pander in the book to cater to the right wing neo-cons to maintain a strong stance in the Likud Party.

Well Good evening to You too Ms. Sanity:

Now think real hard on this, If a Republican candidate was to write a couple of books where he outlines how his mother was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and His Father had been a Member of the Ku Klux Klan, and then He had a Step Father Who was also a member of the Ku Klux Klan, (and his Mother then sent him to live with His GrandParents who were also members of the Ku Klux Klan because she thought her new lover man wasn't radical enough and was a bad influence on the Boy. So then He is raised by His Grandparents but hangs out with his" Mentor" who was a long time Grand Wizard of the Klan, then goes to college where He admits in his book that He sought out Klan members and other radicals of the same mindset. He graduates from college moves to a hotbed of racism, gets a job teaching from a book that is considered the Bible of racists, surrounds himself with racists and is supported in his presidential bid by racists and then fill his administration with racists, now, what would You such a man? If You actually read Your noble Communist leaders Two books and You replace Him as the candidate and Communist for Ku Klux Klan You KNOW that is Him I am describing from his book! Those are the facts Missy from the Horses own mouth!Or don't You believe Your own noble leader?

[Romney to travel to Israel]

Is he trying to one-up Glenn Beck? This should be good...

You always remind us of precious nuggets. From an Israeli news report about Drama Queen Glenn Beck:

There is also no question that he is a devout Mormon, that this is the basis for his worldview and that he sees the world through the parameters of his faith, making some Orthodox rightists uncomfortable.

Consequently, Glenn Beck's visit to Israel sparked the traditional Jewish debate on every subject, typified in the famous anecdote on The Elephant and the Jewish Problem--that is, whether "he is good for the Jews or bad for the Jews."

Apparently, and to no surprise, Glenn Beck orchestrated his visit with selected locations, guests, and audiences. If this sounds familiar, Dubya/Cheney started this, and Romney likewise embraces the tradition.

If Romney travels anywhere, he keeps in mind the protests he faces domestically, but imagine how unpopular he is in most countries around the globe as well. Dubya/Cheney are afraid of arrest for war crimes on top of it all. I'll bet there will be factions in Israel who will protest, but it probably won't be reported.

JD you show your total ignorance. To think that someone you perceive as a Nazi would support a Communist or visa-versa is ludicrous at best. They are at opposite ends of the political spectrum and hate each other. OOps there goes another extremist right wing Fascist wannabe's credibilty down the crapper.

In fact, buddy, I doubt you would know a Communist if one were to sit on your doorstep. That word is so easy to banty about. Joe McCarthy a Republican of the 1940s and 50s, a Senator from Wisconsin showed how stupid it can be to accuse innocent people of being Communists and trying to ruin careers of very kind, generous, loyal and hard working citizens, who just don't happen to lean extreme right on issues.

Now that is laughable and totally ignorant. When President Obama gave his speech in Cairo, in case you forgot, he let the Middle East know what potentials they had. President Obama did invade any Arab country or start the Arab Spring the Arabs themselves did. president Obama is not a neocon. Our President is focused on domestic policy rather than Nation building in smaller, weaker, foreign countries unlike the former GOP presidents and the presumptive nominee, Willard Romney.

Still an ignorant nonsense comment. Anyone that knows history, knows that the Nazi's and Communists hatred was so intense that they virtually tried to annihilate each other. Just remember, 8 out of 10 German soldiers that died in combat were killed by a Russian. Tens of millions more casualties on the Eastern Front than in the West. If not for that Great Patriotic War (as the Soviets called it), we may still be dealing with the Third Reich to this very day. Call it what you want, but facts are facts.

we're not talking about recent technology here. The first teleprompter was built by Hubert Schlafly in 1950. In 1952, former President Herbert Hoover used a Schlafly-designed teleprompter to address the Republican National Convention in Chicago. LBJ was the first U.S. President to use a teleprompter for speeches.

Yep...just give it to ol Obama...flies in, shakes some hands, takes some pictures, gives an "atta boy!" and then splits... Given the resources to expend to bring a president into an area like that, and with the strained resources Colorado already is having with getting a handle on the fires, one would think that Obama didn't need yet another photo op for his campaign.

I think everyone is missing the BIG STORY. I read it on Bloomberg and then Poliico. ROMNEY HAS FUND RAISER IN LONDON!!!

I also read about this on Politico. Why isn't Politico upset about a candidate fund raising in a foreign country? What does this say about Politico? What would Politico say if the current president had a fund raiser in a foreign country? Does Politico no longer have any minimum standards when it comes to the up coming Prez elections?

          job1,

Maybe Romney can learn about heathcare in Israel?

“In Israel, healthcare begins at birth. Everyone is covered. The national health care insurance system is predominantly publicly financed – through taxation linked to income and general revenue. It is regulated by the government,” Dr. Bruce Rosen, director of the Smokler Center for Health Policy (Myers-JDC Brookdale Institute) in Jerusalem, tells ISRAEL21c.

Or maybe he just wants to talk about the old times at Bain with Netanyahu ?

Israel is the only true ally we have in the Middle East now. The President of Egypt, Muslim Brotherhood Mursi(?) will cancel the Peace Treaty with Israel. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and a few others do not see Obama as a leader in the Middle East.

I believe Obama has let Israel down and the fact that he has, on at least two occasions, tipped off Iran and others as to Israel's plans to take out Iran's nuclear facilities. I will bet that Iran, if not taken out by Israel, will get a nuclear weapon within 2 yrs if Obama is reelected.

The middle east leaders consider Obama to be a strong leader and he is well respected for that - not necessarily well liked since he has taken a firm stance with them, but well respected.

Ideo - I do not consider Turkey or Jordan as TRUE allies. They are allies now only because of necessity (military & financial support). I would not put a lot of trust in them.

It was the Obama Administration that released the information about the U.S. and Israel using cyber attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities and also released the location of an airbase where Israel would be able to strike Iran from without U.S. help.

Alliances are always built around common ground. Why is Israel our ally if not for military and financial support?

So Romney is heading over to Israel on Adelson's dime to meet with Netanyahu? I wonder if he will "apologize" for American foreign policy, or just let Netanyahu and Adelson tell him what it should be? If so will the Conservatives complain about it?

I know Israel is our ally, but so are Great Britain and other countries and we don't let them make our foreign policy decisions.

Da Noid - FYI, you can google the following "Azerbaijan Air Base & Israel", there are numerous articles about Israel securing the base, of course Azerbaijan denies it, in which it would be much easier to strike into Iran. Further you can also google "Cyberattacks on Iran" which would cover the fact that it was released by the Obama Administration.

Jeeze, "sfcret"...you really jumped the shark with that comment...so, in your mind, what constitutes a "true" ally? Israel? The only thing Israel is good for these days is Palestinian genocide and cashing our big fat checks. They themselves have become what they find most vile.

[They are allies now only because of necessity (military & financial support).]

And Israel just cashes our check out of the goodness of their heart? Israel needs funding, and we write a blank check and get NOTHING in return.

As far as Turkey, they are a member of NATO, but refused to let us use their territory to put our troops into Iraq during the 1st or 2d Iraqi war. They have refused to commit troops to fight as their policy is mainly not to fight against another Muslim Country. Jordan never committed any military forces in Iraq or during the bombing of Libya.

Israel is a small but powerful country. She has to be because she is surrounded by enemies. Like Presidents before him President Obama want's peace in the Middle East and knows that Israel can go rogue and start shooting off missiles a the drop of a hat. They are the only country, other than Turkey, that we can count on as a consistant ally in the region. However that doesn't mean we need to kiss Israli tush either. Our role should be advisor and benevolant benefactor scolding Israel when she does wrong and support her when she does right. Removing Kabuts dwellers from the Gaza would be a good faith start in creating peace with her neighbors but with Bibi in control that isn't likely to happen.

Romney is probably going to aasure the Israelis that if he is elected that our relationsip with Israel isn't going to change much. We will still kiss their tush and send them tons of money we don't have.

He can't pivot away from the lunatic fringe he needed to win the primary, and so he can't say anything that would court independant voters. All he can do is preach to the choir, as they say.

Quentin13 That was very well put. In this election cycle at this point I sure most people know who they will vote for already. The only thing that may change someone's mind is if a third party candidate gets in. The only question is What party will be hurt by the third candidate. If M. Romney chooses to go to Israel then let him go, who cares and who really gives a (blank)... The question is, what will he do and say over there? Will he pander and kiss the hand of his former Bain buddy Netanyahu, or will he speak ill of his fellow American and current president. The sad part is that between these two choices neither is presidential or even worthy of any comments. That just goes to show any true American what type of guy this flip-flopping "Vulture Capitalist" really is. He will do and say anything in front of the crowd that is in front of him, just so that he can have his moment. Never mind that he will say something that is totally the opposite when he gets in front of another different crowd. Henceforth the moniker "Flip-Flopping Romney...

          Go figure, then go vote...

Barack Hussien Obama has in many ways been Iran's best friend. Nnder BHO, Iran will get the bomb. Each any every action BHO has taken against Iran is because his hand was forced. Even now, BHO continues to stall on any and every action that involves Iran. BHO wants Israel to have to do the dirty work. That way BHO and the world can then come down on Israel while at the same time BHO can continue appeasing his buddies (the Muslim world).

From another point of view one could say BHO has been Iran's best friend since Jimmy (hide-in-the-Rose-Garden) Carter.

          1. Remember Iran's Green Revolution? You know the precursor to today's Arab Spring. BHO said and did absolutely nothing when the people or Iran were up fighting their government. BHO finally did pay lip service to it after the other leaders of the free world criticized him for leading from behind.

          2. Remember BHO saying "that he is not convinced Iran is after the nuclear bomb." Just after BHO came into office.

          3. Remember BHO's reaction to Iran sending M-300 Grad missiles to Hezbollah? - nada, zip, ... just more lip service.

          4. Remember the Iraqi War that we won and BHO "inherited". FYI - Under BHO Iran is now the winner in Iraq. In short, BHO allowed Iran to become the dominate foreign political power in Iraq by doing nothing.

          5. Remember the new SOFA agreement BHO failed to get signed after 3 years in office? Remember BHO wanting to leave 3,000 sitting targets in Iraq? By his failure (and Hillary as Sec of State) the 4,500 who lost their lives were for nothing.

          5. Remember BHO sanctions against Iran, the weakest set of sanctions yet and he took 16 months of dithering before BHO finally got them in place. FYI - Everyone knows it takes years for sanctions (sometimes decades) to work, if ever.

          6. Remember Iran just two months ago trying to blow up Saudi, Israeli in America? BHO said this was unacceptable. Only to completely back of on all actions, even sanctions for this. Then BHO said he would have to check with the internatioanl community. Finally, BHO said he would not take any action since it might hurt the world's recovering economy.

          7. Remember Afghanistan? Under BHO, Afghanistan will fall the very same way Vietnam did. The winners Pakistan and you got it! - Iran.

          8. BHO, just two months ago BHO also had a known Terrorist, paid by Iran, and a leader in the Kobar Towers bombing at the White House. The BHO Admin claims they did not know it. B.S. - No one gets to see the president without the Secrety Service at least checking a visitors back ground out.

          9. Heck! Recently, Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, Hailed BHO's Comments As 'Window Of Opportunity'

          10. Under BHO's policy toward Iran, which will be his "greatest failing, from a foreign policy standpoint. Surpassing his helping all those countries he helped "free" in North Africa to become extremist states.

          11. The EU, with BHO leading from behind, recently threw some real sanctions against Iran. What does BHO do, BHO authorizes exceptions to 10 countries. Under mining the full strength of the new sanctions.

          12. BHO, seeing the EU is getting even more serious, stalls "new" sanctions by suggesting Iran be allowed to Enrichment nuclear materials to 5%. Iran is not going to agree to monitoring but, you sure can be Iran will use it to stall again. BHO's own tactics to stall EU sanctions have now been going on for three months now. Only in this case, neither side has even decided what to discuss, this is stalling BHO style!

          13. BHO, at the end of June 2012, exempted 20 countries buying oil from Iran. These countries can buy oil from Iran, in turn helping Iran and weakening the sanctions. See! - BHO is Irans Best Friend.

Maybe he can talk with them about medical cannabis.. he was so arrogant/ignorant about it last month.
See, the Israeli's are on the forefront of cannabis research and are insisting cannabis be a FIRST line of defense before strong and deadly narcotics (their government even grows it for the patients).
They also, like Europe, have the prescribed "Sativex' that is being approved in the US as we speak FOR MS (Mitts wife has MS), but at 18 dollars a one time spray, and you have to spray several times a day, well.. cheaper to make your own.
Anyway Mitt, instead of getting snarky next time a reporter asks you a question a thinking man should at least be able to answer honestly, instead of saying 'Don't we have something important to talk about', maybe you might want to consider it aint all about you.
Please, for God's sake Mitt, talk to the Israeli's.. you need schooling bad on this subject. 1960's are over.

That would be SO cool. But let's face it. It's going to be all about how Obama isn't doing enough to get us dragged into a gruesome war with Iran.

But could you see it if Mitt came back from Israel as an advocate for legalization? Talk about a 'game-change!'

Unlikely, but miracles do happen. And not impossible given that the main opponents of legalization are the Mexican-American drug smugglers who, in turn, are a significant part of Obama's constituency.

Romney has a much clearer understanding of foreign policy, and the proper role of the US in the world than Obama. You can take either the moral view or the pragmatic view:

Moral view: Israel is the only rational nation in the Mideast - Maybe Turkey comes in a distant second - and all the Muslim countries hate us "infidels." We need to support Israel because Israel is pro-civilization, and the world desperately needs a little more civilization.

Pragmatic view: Israel is our only true ally in the Mideast. The Islamic nations will use us, take our money, smile in our face ... and then stab us in the back! To prevent further attacks, we need influence in the ME, and Israel is the only secure foothold we have or can ever have. We need to support Israel for our own self-interest.

Romney understands these facts; Obama doesn't.

Let's take away all names and predispositions and ask, how 'civilized' is a nation that denies a huge swath of its population the right to equal representation in government? In South Africa we called this apartheid.

So let's go with the 'Pragmatic' view you posit. Agreed, but that's changing. This administration has been very smart in bending with the wind in regard to the 'Arab Spring,' supporting the uprisings instead of propping up old regimes. When these nations stablize, we will find less enemies in the region, if not new allies.

Israel has been and always will be an ally of the West, because the West pushed the UN for its founding. We want there to be an Israel, so there's an Israel. Full stop.

But the middle-east is changing, and its clear that the peoples coming to power in the post-Arab Spring-age are much more complicated and diverse than the 'wild-eyed pistol wavers' of the late 20th century. Israel has got to find a way to reach out and become a good neighbor in the region, or she will find herself on the wrong side of history, and I fear that she will drag her allies in the West down with her.

I suggest you go back and see what is happening now in those countries. With BHO's help, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is now in charge in Egypt. In Yemen, we now have a Civil War with outside groups as Al-Qaeda involved.

In Bahrain, at least 40 people have died. The people are being suppressed and because they have Oil BHO looks the other way.

In Algeria - Islamic extremists have fought Algerian security forces since 1992. That means for the last 19 years. The Algerian military had slowly won the battle against these extremists. But, by under mining the leader of Algeria, the extremists groups are now able to resume their attacks more frequently. In fact, since July of this year, the attacks have increased dramatically. The goal of the extremists - Sharia law under their militant control. In fact Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magheb (was Salifist group for preaching & combat) is now more active than it has been in years. Now, the fighting has spread to Mali from Algeria.

In Tunisia: Secular and Islamic groups are fighting. End result: Tunisia’s move toward democracy is seriously in doubt.

In Libya: The Tuaregs are fighting the Malian Army. Then, you have Abdul-Jalil saying his people want a new Libya with an Islamist tint, saying Islamic Sharia law be the "basic source" of legislation, and that existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified. Then you have 2 Libyan militia factions clashing Tripoli's busiest streets. Point is with 140 tribes, a new civil war is all ready in progress in Libya. In fact, in just the last two months, over 250 libyians have been killed i fighting but the media sure does not want this published.

This is not an Arab-spring but an Arab-Winter, strongly backed by none other than BHO.

Nonsense! There have been Israeli Arab members of the Knesset since the first Knesset elections in 1949. How many Jews are there in the Egyptian Parliament do you suppose?

supporting the uprisings instead of propping up old regimes. When these nations stablize, we will find less enemies in the region, if not new allies.

Wishful thinking. Egypt's new President Mohamed Morsi is an Islamic fundamentalist with all the usual hatred for Israel and the West.

Wow! People criticizing Romney for visiting Israel! Let's see, BHO has been in office 42 months and he has yet to visit Israel. Why? Because he does not like or really support Israel. Well, that is unless he is after the Jewish vote. Then, he is a (so-called) friend of Israel. Another transparent example of BHO wanting to get re-elected at any cost.

Now for a few facts on Mustafa Barack Husein Obama. BHO had time to make a special trip to Egypt. BHO has time to bow to the King of Saudi Arabia on his visit to SA. BHO had time to visit Turkey. BHO had time to visit Afghanistan and Iraq. What do these countries just listed have in common? They are all Muslim.

If BHO were interested in visiting Israel he could have done it at any time. Now that BHO has a track record, it is obvious that BHO does not like Israel period. Yet, he obeys every word, every order Soros gives him.

Health care in Israel is universal and participation in a medical insurance plan is compulsory. Health care coverage is administered by a small number of organizations, with funding from the government. All Israeli citizens are entitled to the same Uniform Benefits Package, regardless of which organization they are a member of, and treatment under this package is funded for all citizens regardless of their financial means. Generally, health care in Israel is of high-quality and is delivered in an efficient and effective manner. Partly as a result of this, at an overall 82 years, Israelis enjoy the fourth-longest life expectancy in the world as of 2012.

I doubt Benjamin Netanyahu would really take the Mittster seriously, since even he has toned down (a little of) the sabre rattling over the years.

The President's approach to Israel is frankly, refreshing, and seems to get the diplomacy done, without having him have to visit. Besides, some tighty-righties would be all a flutter if the President went to visit, calling it a vacation or something. You can't have it both ways.

Republicans pander, rattle, grovel, and slobber when they go there.

              It's quite unbecoming.

Israel can take care of itself, but they know, with our President, that we have it's back.

Our Jewish brothers and sisters need to know most Americans are there to support our spiritual home lands.
