In email exchanges with subordinates in February and March 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder and the department's second-highest official expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in a federal gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious.

Two of Holder's emails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole were among documents the Justice Department showed Tuesday to Republican and Democratic staffers of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee in an effort to ward off a criminal contempt vote against the attorney general.

For the past year and a half, some Republicans have promoted the idea that Holder and other top-level officials at the Justice Department knew federal agents in Operation Fast and Furious had engaged in a risky tactic known as "gun-walking."

Two of Holder's emails and one from Cole appear to show that they hadn't known about gun-walking but were determined to find out whether the allegations were true.

3) Holder meets with Issa and says "I'll give you the documents only if you agree to drop the investigation." Issa says no.

4) 12 hours later Obama suddenly decides these documents are privileged, even though Holder offered them to Issa 12 hours earlier

5) Holder ingnores the deadline.

6) Congress votes Holder in contempt.

Not sure why anyone is shocked or upset over this. Holder is the one who precipitated this. All Holder had to do was turn over the documents. What's so hard to understand about this?

In March 2009, the Obama administration outlined plans to redeploy more than 500 federal agents to border posts and redirect $200 million to combat smuggling of illegal drugs, money and weapons.
On May 25, 2010 President Obama authorized deployment of 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico to assist with border protection and enforcement activities, as well as help train additional Customs and Border Protection agents.

On July 10, 2008, the Mexican government announced plans to nearly double the size of its Federal Police force to reduce the role of the military in combating drug trafficking.
In 2010 the cartels seek "to replace the government" and "are trying to impose a monopoly by force of arms, and are even trying to impose their own laws.As of 2011, Mexico's military captured 11,544 people who were believed to have been involved with the cartels and organized crime.

A significant number of firearms that make their way to Mexico come from U.S. gunshops. These are then smuggled into Mexico across the US-Mexico border.Gun-rights groups in the U.S. use lower firearm tracing figures that advance their goals.ATF Project Gunrunner has a stated official objective to stop the sale and export of guns from the United States into Mexico in order to deny Mexican drug cartels the firearms considered "tools of the trade".

However, in February 2008 it brought about a scandal when the project was accused of accomplishing the opposite by ATF permitting and facilitating 'straw purchase' firearm sales to traffickers, and allowing the guns to 'walk' and be transported to Mexico. Several of the guns sold under the Project Gunrunner were recovered from crime scenes in Arizona.

The vast majority of the handguns and many of the assault rifles used by the cartels enter Mexico trace back from Gunshops in United States are NO secret.

What some many don't see is that this particular issue is many times worse than Watergate! At least with Watergate, no one died. The reason Holder is responsible is that he is the head of the justice dept which the ATF is part of. Congress was investgating the possible violations of law committed by employees within the justice dept. From "whistle blowers" there were reports that this was not done by low level employees but was ordered from higher up. Congress has called upon any witnesses they could find and wanted to see any communications that pertained to the investigation. They have already shown that on numerous occaisions Holder has lied under oath and as such committed perjury. Certain documents were subpeonaed by Congress and by law the person who the papers were served on legally has to comply. That is the law. Holder, being the head law enforcement officer of the country, knows this. He decided that he was above the law! Well, he is not. Nixon wasn't and neither is holder or Obama. The latest from a CBS news report is that the whole thing was to make it look like more guns were being smuggled into Mexico, so more gun laws could be passed. This is dispicable to promote a political agenda with having hundreds of deaths of innocent people!

You guys on Holder's side are hopelessly deluded or purposefully complicit in murder.

Fact: Brian Terry was murdered with a weapon that the US Government gave to Mexican cartels.

Fact: When asked to explain the issue (under oath) Holder has lied and withheld information pertaining to the investigation.

When Holder offered to share some information to make it all "go away" he was looking for blanket immunity.

Then Holder asked President Obama to cover him with executive privilege which could only apply if Obama knew about it all along after testifying Obama knew nothing about it.

For a year now, Holder has refused to produce the documents. In the beginning, before he swore Obama knew nothing about it, executive privilege would have been believable, but now it's just blatantly covering it up.

Why now do you not care about an innocent citizen gunned down?

When will democrats research a subject before posting nonsense? Never? What a surprise. It might interest the left to know Gun Walking, the practice of selling guns with the express intent to track them to criminals has been expressly illegal since the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1934 because of the inherent risk of losing track of said guns. Ever heard of it? No, again what a surprise. The left keeps chanting gun control, gun control, gun control", when in fact counting all Federal, State, County, Municipal, and District of Columbia laws and ordinances there are currently 27,734 laws currently in force regulating firearms.

1) The gun laws in Arizona are so lax that a person on food stamps can go into a gun shop and buy thousands of dollars worth of automatic weapons and then go out to the parking lot and resell the guns to be taken to Mexico. 2) When a wingnut blogger who incited violence (for example vandalism to Gabby Gifford's office) is treated like a star on FOX Noise as an "Internet journalist" and "expert" who started a conspiracy theory that Stephen Colbert mocked so well saying -- In 2006 then Sen. Obama hypnotized Dubya to get Eric Holder to get the ATF to get gunsellers to sell guns to drug lords in Mexico to orchestrate a crisis to take away second amendment rights so that later President Obama could put into effect all the plans he doesn't have to take away guns.

The GOP does not have a viable or sellable plan to move this country forward. To divert our citizens' attention away from this fact , they have chosen to "throw up smoke and mirrors." Here are the actual votes that got us into Iraq. I do not just see Rep votes here. There are so many questions that remain unanswered about Fast & Furious that I can't understand why Eric Holder and President Obama are withholding the information about what happened, who knew, who authorized, and how can we prevent it from happening again. Reports I've seen are over 200 innocent civilians have been murdered by these weapons, so why would the Attorney General and the President not be completely open about this? I don't care what side of the political aisle you are on, everybody, as Americans, should demand the documents be released. We should insist that our politicians come clean!!

1) The timing is atrocious. Completely overshadowed by the SCOTUS decision on AHCA.

2) This has been an on-gling Issa withunt going back over 18 months. There has never been a hint of anything done wrong, just a lot of broad hints at a coverup. A coverup of what?

3) Several magazines, including Fortune and Forbes have been doing their digging and are publishing that they found absolutely nothing wrong except that the NRA was leaning on prosecutors to not prosecute those caught running illegal cartel-oriented gun shops.

4) It is an on-going investigation. The Justice Dept alwasy has the right to withheld working papers, especially for any on-going activity.

I would suggest that NewsViners go to ANY "fact check" site (factcheck, politifact, even snopes) and search for "Fast and Furious." You will find that it is a Bush era program that started in 2006 (under Bush.) The idea sounded good --- to track illegal guns through straw buyers to cartel gun buyers. But in practice it failed on two counts: a) no gun was ever tracked to the cartel people, and b) the NRA constantly interfered with prosecutions of gun shop owners and straw buyers. Mostly they promised DA's that if they presecuted the cases, they would never get elected office again.

Under Obama the program was being defunded. The only really active part was trying to recover as many of the 2,000 weapons that were allowed out there under Bush. Under Obama, none were added, but a little over 700 were recovered.

Fortune and Forbes have conducted their own investigations and here is a typical article about the result:

I did just that, at all 3 sites to of which provided no results related th F&F and the third provided a description of the program, but did not give any info that would back up your assertion. But the Republicans are prepping to pass a majorly significant repeal of the ACA in a couple weeks. Just like that, 5 mins after ACA is ruled constitutional, they can get the repeal on the docket of the full house - a repeal of the most major piece of legislation since Civil Rights, legislation that was debated and thrashed out for about a year.

After 50 years of attempts and discussions. the ACA was "rammed down our throats" but the Republicans are going to allow a complete analysis of 50+ years of consideration with 2 FULL WEEKS (starting now?) of rational thorough "debate". Debate that will probably consist of one meaningless day of hyperventilated oratory about death panels, government takeover, and who knows what other idiocy.

I guess it is politics. This investigation is 18 months old, it sure was a smart move by the Republicans to stonewall the investigation long enough to get to 5 months before the election. And the Republicans not turning over documents? Brilliant!!! Oh, that was Holder? He doesn't remember. Executive Privilege? What exactly does this have to do with Obama?
