Pelosi to hold party toasting Supreme Court decision

Updated 2:34 p.m. - Democrats are no doubt thrilled by Thursday's Supreme Court ruling upholding the president's health care reform law.

So thrilled, that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is throwing a party for select Democratic staffers on Capitol Hill.

NBC News obtained the following invitation sent out this morning a few hours after the decision:

Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader
United States House of Representatives

requests the pleasure of your company at a reception honoring today's victory on the Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act on Thursday, the twenty  eighth day of June, two thousand twelve at five o'clock in the afternoon

Leader's Conference Room
United States Capitol

A Pelosi aide adds: "This reception will consist of Costco cake and brownie bites. No taxpayer dollars being spent, very informal." No alcohol will be served.

Good for her! The democrats deserve to revel in this monumental ruling.

I hope they enjoy every last minute of their celebration!

In the mean time, Boehner and his minions will be desperate in their attempts to find their Etch-A-Sketch's in their effort to spin this as a victory for them.

Jim Messina, Obama For Re-Election Campaign Manager, posted on Daily Kos:

Mitt Romney had an opportunity to rise to the occasion today and tell the American people specifically how he would move the nation forward on health care and ensure people get the care they need. Yet, once again, he squandered that opportunity. Instead of explaining how he would ensure costs don’t go up and health benefits are protected, Romney promised to repeal the President’s health reform law and take America back to the same old political battles of the past. He is completely unmoved by what that would do to millions of middle-class families, women, seniors and young Americans who are today benefiting from the law. Romney’s promise to repeal the law would give insurance companies free rein to exploit Americans through the worst industry abuses, strip 86 million Americans of often life-saving preventive care, cost 3.1 million young Americans of their coverage by kicking them off their parents’ plans, allow insurance companies to discriminate against kids with preexisting conditions, and increase prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare.

Just six years ago, before Mitt Romney decided to run for president, he passed a law in Massachusetts that achieved universal coverage for the citizens of that state through an individual mandate and tax penalty. That law became the model for the President’s health reform law. Now, as he is running for president, Romney has run away from his accomplishment in Massachusetts, callously promising to repeal national reform and “kill it dead.” He owes the American people a clear, non-parsed explanation of why he believes his decisions in Massachusetts are wrong for the country, and exactly what he would do to help the American people get the health care they need.

"WCA"

The lady doth protest too much, methinks. I can picture the Koch Brothers sitting around right now with a flat bottle of champagne (they popped it open because FOX News originally reported ACA struck down) and the hors d'ouevres from their party had planned for the 5-4 decision that it was unconstitutional.

(Leftover lobbying money makes for one hell of a spread!)

Think Progress:

The mandate can indeed be characterized as a tax, as the Court found. But it is not a massive tax hike on the middle class, much less the biggest tax hike in American history. The tax imposed by the individual mandate amounts to either $695 or 2.5 percent of household income for those who don’t have insurance and are not exempt based on income levels. By comparison, the payroll tax cut extension Republicans repeatedly blocked earlier this year would have added 3.1 percentage points to the tax and cost the average family $1,500 a year.

Well that's closer Pat Boston MA -- I see that you don't like Romney and you do like the fact that millions more will not lose coverage.

Does this act force the insurance companies to lower their rates - probably not since more are now being added to the need to get coverage pool.

Oh wait - they can wait to see who dies off then figure if they need the coverage. My sister (IN MASS.) had polyps in her Colon. She was told to be rechecked every 6 mo. When she went back she was told to WAIT until 2014 as it wasn't covered under the MASSACHUSETS MANDATORY INSURANCE.

WHAT is in this Health Care Act that benefits the insurance companies? Do we get to an age where they deny coverage until you are dead - problem solved?

For those whining about tax and spend I ask you which is better tax and spend or borrow and spend? While the Dems want to tax and spend it is with money taxed now, of, for and by this generation where borrow and spend is money, with interest for future generations to pay. Just like Bush's off the budget wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are examples of borrow and spend. Borrowing from COMMUNIST China for our future generations to pay back. Instead of selling war bonds to Americans as in the past we borrowed for an enemy.

We do need to curb spending but we also need to raise revenues. One way to do that is to put people back to work so they can pay taxes whether those taxes are high, low or somewhere in between. Outsourcing may not have been the root cause nor the only cause of the economic problem but one of many. Bringing jobs back to America and punishing companies who hide assets off shore to avoid taxes in America (among the lowest of developed countries) is a step in the right direction.

One after another so-called journalist is going on television to say that President Obama didn't sell this legislation to the American people.

I see one website after another after another giving us information on this legislation and what it means for Americans.

If this isn't being sold, then it's because journalists don't want to report on it.

I have heard President Obama talk numerous times about what this legislation means for us. It is the journalists who instead make it a game of politics, instead of reporting on what is in this legislation.

There is a website by the Obama Administration dedicated just to the ACA.

These journalists are lying. It is they who don't want to report on the good stuff that is in this legislation.

    Particularly Fineman and Halperin.

We never see journalists on from Think Progress. They do actual reporting, not GOP talking points. They are journalists who do their homework.

Elena Kagan's failure to recuse on this case shows her utter contempt for the rule of law! We can expect any of her future decisions to be motivated purely by ideology and politics, as well.

Title 28, Section 455 of the United States Judicial Code provides that a federal judge: “shall disqualify himself in any proceeding in which his/her impartiality might reasonably be questioned.” The law also says a justice must recuse anytime he has “expressed an opinion concerning the merits of the particular case in controversy” while he “served in governmental employment.”

When she was Solicitor-General for Obama in March 21, 2010, she emailed Laurence Tribe: “I hear they have the votes Larry!! Simply amazing.” She thinks the Health Care law is "simply amazing" and now she claims impartiality in deciding on its constitutionality?

      Simply amazing …

Had Justice Kagan recused herself you would have ended up with a 4-4 tie decision. This would have resulted in and automatic affirmation of the US Court of Appeals ruling 11/8/11 that the law was constitutional.

        You'd have lost anyway.

Kannin, there is no requirement for recusal on the SCOTUS. There is no unlawful action from either Thomas or Kagan. However, if Kagan was to recuse her self for the appearance of Partiality, could you not agree that there appears to be a Conflict in the Thomas household?

        • 1 vote
        #5.8 - Thu Jun 28, 2012 3:15 PM EDT

Federal law requires that a “justice, judge, or magistrate judge of the United States shall disqualify himself in any proceeding in which his impartiality might reasonably be questioned" or if they, in a previous federal job, served as a "counsel, adviser, or material witness concerning the proceeding or has expressed an opinion concerning the merits of the particular case in controversy.”

As you will recall, Justice Kagan recused herself from the Arizona immigration issue...most likely because she was Solicitor General when the administration filed suit over SB 1070.

I could easily argue that both Justice Kagan and Justice Thomas could have (and on a certain level, should have) recused themselves. Chief Justice Roberts had faith in the other justices' ability to determine whether or not to recuse themselves. I think for a case this big, however, there would have been too many "What Ifs" had anything other than a full panel of 9 justices rules on the matter.

My post pointed out Elena Kagan's illegal and unethical conflict of interest. If you wish to post on Clarence Thomas, please do so independently since the two are independent issues. Trying to justify Kagan's actions with the excuse that someone else may also be guilty of the same crime, just makes you sound like Democrats.

Highlights of what RomneyCare has accomplished after 5 years of being in affect:

1 - Nearly every Massachusetts citizen is covered

2 - Many more businesses are offering medical insurance to their employees.

3 - The overall costs of the program to the state have not exceeded expectations.

4 - The cost of health care premiums for individuals who buy insurance without the help of an employer have gone down dramatically.

5 - RomneyCare remains exceptionally popular among state residents.

Then why can't my Sister - a resident of Massachusetts, get the colon-oscopy testing she was TOLD she was needing every 6 mo - because the insurance company stated it was NOT covered. After all it was the insurance company doctors that stated she needed it in the first place.

Some system. You have polyps - we removed them - it was benign - if we find more? Oh wait you must pay out of pocket because under preventative care you are not covered... even though it is mandated to have the coverage.

Had the shoe been on the other foot Boehner would be toasting the SCOTUS decision. Whether with tax payer money or their own the winner will celebrate no matter who it is. Bitter and sour comments from having to eat sour grapes and a little crow are to be expected from those who happened to lose this decision.

While ACA isn't perfect it is a step in the right direction. Congress can tweak provisions to make it better, whatever that might be. For now, millions of Americans are able to afford healtcare, won't be dropped due to previous conditions and youngsters will remain insured well into their 20s when on their parents' plan.

And my Sister can get her test for more polyps???

Oh, wait they said not until 2014... Hope they don't turn cancerous - because if that happens your premiums go up.

Bob: Then put up the money for your sister, or she should put it up....that is what the GOP always says....take responsibility for yourself....if your sister doesn't have the right insurance...it is her fault....

Or wait, maybe the right insurance is too costly......well ACA will help with that....

MSNBC is posting a new article on this every few minutes, repeatedly gloating over the same news. Half a dozen at last count. Totally absent from MSNBC's reporting is one of the latest CNN headlines: “The U.S. House will vote today on holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for withholding documents involving the failed Fast and Furious weapons crackdown.”

Could it be that whatever dog-and-pony show the House is holding doesn't have any direct affect on the average person like healthcare does?

How long do you think it will take before Romney will start taking credit for the ACA, saying it was HIS idea just like the auto bailout? Before the end of the week, or before the end of the day? Whats the over/under?

I agree with two of the three provisions that you mentioned above. The pre-existing condition and the up to 26 years coverage included. However please tell me where I can find that as of now health care is more affordable for millions. If the full law is not in effect until 2014?

She had probably not even read the entire decision, let alone the original ACA bill.

This decision has hardened our resolve. Quiet. White-hot. Rock-solid. See you in November.

This reminds me of the music played by the Nazi's as the Jews marched on to the gas chambers. A party is not appropriate. They may have "won," yet have so much more to LOSE!

another and others ranting about a "party"....it is a small get together....it is not a party.

And if the decision had gone the other way GOP would be holding their get together too. Instead they all all going to meet Boehner and drink their sorrow away.

Pelosi and most Dumbocrats are getting a little ahead of themselves. Come January 2013 this will be a distant memory when Romney starts work on repealing it. Enjoy now you'll be sulking later. Remember Obama Care doesn't go into full effect until 2014. Plenty of time of time for Romney to repeal it. Suck on that Pelosi.

They didn't understand the part where Chief Justice Roberts said the government couldn't force us to buy health insurance but could congress could tax those who don't have it. This after Obama said the mandate wasn't about a new tax but the Supreme Court says yes it is. Their beyond stupid for believing anything that comes out of Obama's mouth.

They also don't understand we have an election in November so what they believe to be a victory could be short lived.
