Polls: Obama, Romney neck-and-neck in Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire

A new round of NBC News-Marist polls shows President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney running almost neck-and-neck in three key battleground states, with Obama holding a slight advantage in Michigan and North Carolina, and the two candidates tied in New Hampshire.

In Michigan, Obama is ahead by four percentage points among registered voters, including those who are undecided but are still leaning toward a candidate, 47 to 43 percent.

In North Carolina, the president gets 46 percent to Romney's 44 percent, which is within the survey's margin of error.
And in New Hampshire, the two men are tied at 45 percent each.

"Everything is very close," says Lee Miringoff, the director of Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted these surveys.

In 2008, Obama won Michigan and New Hampshire – which had been competitive states in previous presidential elections – by double-digit margins. And he carried North Carolina, a reliably Republican state since 1980, by just 14,000 votes.

In all three states, Obama's approval rating remains above water -- or right on the surface. In Michigan, 48 percent of registered voters approve of his job, while 42 percent disapprove.

In New Hampshire, it's 47 to 45 percent, and in North Carolina it's 47 to 47 percent.

Romney calls Obamacare 'moral failure'

As for Romney, his favorability rating is upside down in two of the three states. In Michigan, 37 percent say they have favorable impression of the former Massachusetts governor, and 43 percent have an unfavorable opinion. In North Carolina, Romney's fav/unfav is 40-42 percent.

The lone exception is in New Hampshire – which borders Massachusetts, and where Romney owns a home – it's even at 45-45 percent.

Mixed results on the economy
The issue of the economy is a mixed bag in each of these three states, as well.

Majorities say the country is headed in the wrong direction, but nearly equal majorities believe that Obama inherited the current economic conditions.

In Michigan, the president holds a narrow edge over Romney, 44 to 42 percent, when it comes to which candidate would do a better job handling the economy.

Romney, meanwhile, leads on this question in New Hampshire, 46 to 42 percent. And they are tied in North Carolina, at 43 percent.

"The economy plays both ways in all three states," Miringoff says.

Obama leads big with Hispanics, but they're not fired up and ready to go yet

In New Hampshire, adding Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) to the GOP presidential ticket doesn't improve Romney's standing in the Granite State.

A Romney-Ayotte team won the support of 43 percent of registered voters, versus 45 percent for Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

In a hypothetical contest for Michigan's Senate seat, incumbent Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow leads former Republican Rep. Pete Hoekstra by 12 points among registered voters, 49 to 37 percent.

And in North Carolina's gubernatorial contest, former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, the Republican nominee, gets 43 percent, while Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton gets 41 percent.

These three NBC-Marist surveys were conducted June 24-25 by landline and cell phone of 1,078 registered voters in Michigan, 1,029 registered voters in New Hampshire and 1,019 registered voters in North Carolina.

The margin of error for the New Hampshire and North Carolina poll is plus-minus 3.1 percentage points, and it's 3.0 percentage points in Michigan.

After reading this story, I am inclined to wish None of the Above were an option on an election ballot. As clearly that would be my choice if the election was held today.

I tried that option in the last general election, the end result was "nobody cares" whether I voted or not except me, and now I am stuck with the results.

@Jerry40yeardemocrat- I have read many of your posts and find that 99% of them add absolutely no value to a debate.

It appears that you are doing nothing but 'trolling' the site with intent to inflame and degrade other posters. Get a life! Make an argument with points; don't just spew hatred and nonsense.

          Just curious dear republicans...

How does a TRUE right wing, conservative republican get elected governor of a historically moderate/liberal state like Massachusetts?

Or is he just pandering to the tea party and is a RINO in disguise?

(Parrots please note this post does not relate to Obama. Try, just this once, to stay on topic.)

The answer is easy. When to opposition is so clueless, and had destroyed everything the survivors of any ship wreck will cling to whatever floats.

Romney may not be the most wonderful person in the world, may not be what everyone wants, but his background and skills prove he succeeds in whatever he does. Sorry, but for there to be a winner there has to be a loser. If you cannot win in one game or area of life change the game you get into of change your life. Remember there are always more "losers" than winners. The number one position is always filled leaving the rest to regroup and overcome feeling like losers, and THAT is what true victorious people will do. You may not be "number one" but not letting not being "number one" get you down.....PRICELESS>

I've been reading the comments of many Obama fans who say wait for the debates. Those debates that you think will improve Obama's chances will actually hurt them. It is during those debates Obama must answer for his time as President, his...you know...record. Those debates are where Obama is most vulnerable.

As a former Obama voter in 2008, I very much forward to seeing him try and explain his failure as President.

I would get on the ballot were I a politician, but - alas - I possess way too much common sense to ever get elected. Besides, as an actual fallible human being I am not squeaky clean, so my chances of getting elected during an era in which most of the populace concentrates on almost everything that does not matter, I doubt I would win.

Obama's idea of America is Soviet style socialism, drenched in political correctness. Obama wants everything to be controlled by the government, and Obama care is just more government control. Obama must go after the Nov elections. And I wouldn't believe anything that NBC or MSNBC says about the upcoming election, because of their Soviet style, propaganda, masking for news.

when it comes to willard aka mitt, a line from 'vacation' comes to mind, where the car salesman tells griswold about the heap he is trying to sell him,"you just think you hate it now. wait till you drive it."

Y Boy. The fact that Romney was elected in one of the most liberal states in the country shows you his ability to get along with the lefties. Right now, the Congress is split because Barry is so far to the left there is no way that he anything gets done. If he is re-elected the Congess will continue to be split with the same results and just like the last four years ... nothing will get done. If Romney is elected ... his ability to work with the Dems will make things run much smoother in Congress and finally .... bills will get things passed that will result in a better economy and job creation. Think about it.

The genius of the right and their backroom guys.....So you want to get rid of medicare, because in reality, you and your buddies can make a lot more money with the government out of the way. Clean fewer toilets. Hire fewer assistants and keep people underemployed and all that. But what about the tidal wave of folks who will need medicare soon? Damn, they'll be hard to get around,......unless..............we can get them totally on our side!!!!

                                          What? you say.

Yes!!!!! Get the people to vote against their own interests!!!!!

                                          That'll never work!

Yes~! It will! Have you seen what a horrible greedy self loathing set of goofballs the 50s gave us? They're all shorted out upstairs, have nothing to do because they're the last generation that will collect a pension. They have absolutely everything to lose, and we can convince them to let us charge them for all of their money upfront instead of letting the government regulate the industry just a little....

                                          And how?

                                          Battle Plan

                                          1. The President is smart and articulate. Remind everyone he's blacker than Anne Rand's soul.

                                          2. Tell them that someone else is entitled. They understand that feeling because they wake up every day. Let them let loose their fear of loosing their pension on other people who just want the fair shake that they got.

                                          3. Break the government every chance you get. If it's too strong to drown, beat it like a red headed stepchild and tell it what a bad boy it's been every day until it finally breaks down and takes it's own life. I'm seeing Carl Rove beating a kind of beady, stringy 50's style toy against a bedpost and laughing.

                                          4. Be ready for the coming apocalypse. These jokers won't have anything after you take it all, and there is a slight risk that the people will rise up, or there may be a war. That IS what normally happens when an entire country full of people who hoard guns have little to do or be happy about...........we must convince our lemmings to do so as well. They should have so much invested in the bunker out back that they never have any stake in the whole again, and should even treasure the idea of freedom for tyranny while eating beans in a 300 sq ft fallout shelter.

                                          5. Call a liberal a faggot and mean it. It really gets the base going to see some good old fashioned name calling. Oh yeah, and keep them away from those orphans. You know orphans can take care of themselves if let loose in a free market economy with the right skills. It's all in our collective movie experience. Oliver. An American Tale. Yeah, single moms are, uh.....WELFARE QUEENS!!! That's it! Unless they're white, that's bad.....hmm. Get back to ya.

                                          6. Get your buddies to wreck another company, and then get other buddies to hire them and give them a raise. Lay off more lemmings. Tell them the Dems are totally responsible. You couldn't dump antifreeze into the water next to Charles Dickens Dam and estuary so someone has to starve this winter and it is DEFINITELY the DEMS fault! Oh yes! Not me! Not the guy who laid you off just before Christmas after 10, sorry 15 years of service and perfect attendance....THEN!!! Tell everybody the private sector can do it better and has less costs than a publicly run and publicly responsible entity.

                                          7. Downsize fire teachers and police while constantly crowing about how great they are!!!! What can they say? You're on their side!!! Just as long as they don't want a pension......or to own a home.......or to feed their kids in 6 months....and take away their healthcare which is a shining example to all of what should be and never will be for all.....for some reason

                                          8. Get your buddies on the supreme court to make unlimited spending on politics normal. Then buy up every bit of airtime you can. Label your opponents communists and fascists and show black and white pictures of opponents. Then, if your opponents are well baited, they will start treating their constiuency like idiots too, losing even more of a well informed and brave lot to fringe parties that might do something and act like they have a pair with a brain attached.

                                          9. Buy a channel and spew something. Anything. As long as they aren't thinking.......

                                          10. Deny everything and make counter-accusations.....die happy on a boat.....shooting at the hordes on the shore.......

I looked at the poll numbers for NC which is where I live. They polled 100 people and consider this to mean Obama has a lead. They should actually come here and realize that many do not want Obama. After Amendment One was soundly passed Obama came out and basically supported gay marriage. He may have picked up a few votes from young gay supporters but he upset more of the older crowd which will cost him support.

In 2008 you could see NC was behind Obama but you don't see it now. It will be very close election for whoever wins but NC will not be a battleground state as many think.

I have come to know him as a con artist and have no trust in anything he says, because he is a died in the wool SOCIALIST and the results of that are clearly Equal Sharing of Misery for all Americans. I have grown to like Romney's character and business sense and trust him. So it's a crossover for me.

As we entered the recession, as many as half of all mortgages in the U.S. were considered inferior and liable to default. This was a clear result of government housing policies to encourage home ownership, which resulted in a broad misallocation of capital, loosened mortgage standards, and created distortions in the real estate market.

On top of this, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) had an official policy of increasing home ownership by lowering mortgage underwriting standards. This had a significant effect on the quality of mortgages in circulation prior to the recession.

So who’s to blame for the housing policies that caused the recession? HUD was created by Lyndon Johnson (a Democrat) after passage of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Act by a Democrat-controlled House and Senate in 1965.

The Community Reinvestment Act was signed into law by Jimmy Carter (another Democrat) after, once again, passing through a Democrat-controlled House and Senate.

It would appear that Democrats are to blame

Another cause of the 2007-08 recession was banking regulation that a) concentrated mortgage securities with a small number of firms, b) offered implied government insurance on bad mortgages, and c) established accounting guidelines that allowed banks to significantly reduce their capital positions.

This is where Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac come in. Both entities, while technically private entities, made the federal government the implicit backers of every mortgage held. That implied guarantee was made explicit once they were bailed out following this latest recession

Another cause of the 2007-08 recession was banking regulation that a) concentrated mortgage securities with a small number of firms, b) offered implied government insurance on bad mortgages, and c) established accounting guidelines that allowed banks to significantly reduce their capital positions.

Once NAFTA was implemented, on Bill Clinton's watch, our downhill slide became much quicker. Bush 41 was the first president to speak of "THE NEW WORLD ORDER" during an evening press conference. Do any of you remember? But it was president Clinton who implemented NAFTA. We are where we are now due to the actions of the Republi-crats who have been taking care of themselves for decades now at our expense. Time to change the guard. Maybe an honest man who has run businesses (Massachusetts, Bain Capital, Olympics) and believes in a higher power not affiliated with destroying "the Great (USA) and Small (Israel) evils in this world (according to the radical Muslims) can save us from this slide we are on. Making back room deals with Russia, Palestine, Iran, etc, which directly effect Iran's opportunity to wipe us out with nuclear weaponry is now the standard with President Obama, who was mentored by Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Annarchist) and Rev. Jesse Jackson (just what church is in preaching to?).

The climate of unregulated and neverending growth offered by large companies refusing to make any check on people's credit AT ALL, which I assure you is not in those bills or institutions, led to constant overvaluing of all real estate, not to mention the bargain prices we all get now because no one shops around when they have money. And the constant house flipping.

Deregulation of savings and loans, which crashed enmass during another President's term, this lifetime, led to speculation on everything from land to oil to bad mortgages. The crash could have come just as easily as an overextension of any of the large markets, but housing is where it hit. It was also where many of us were the weakest.

After completely wrecking confidence in Wallst, which bet against companies while selling shares of those companies to its own clients, which is illegal, all the paper was called in when Bear Sterns couldn't maintain liquidity, resulting in a massive panic and almost shutdown of the entire world economy. The next year, bonuses were normal for all involved. No one went to jail. Investors, who should have been outraged, either ran or put their heads between their legs and kissed it goodbye, not knowing that our corporate overlords had decided to buy themselves some welfare.

After the bailout, the companies used techniques called gouging and usery to repay the government, which was complicit in said robbery, Dem and Pub. All this while pretending we aren't at war twice and steadily allowing rights to fall away like burnt leaves. Poor people who don't pay their mortgages help the economy dip@!$%#. Someone else gets to keep the money they paid already and resell the house at full value. Someone else gets to buy it now. The only person who loses is the poor person.

The MIDDLE CLASS, that is, the NOT POOR PEOPLE, are primarily responsible for holding up the shabang by not selling every stock they own. The Rich would have nothing if the middle class wasn't willing to stand there and take it. Now, the democratic party aint full of saints, but I know where the devils are. The dems are guilty of being weak and slow. The Republicans are just guilty. They have yet to come up with a plan and since they're too stupid, lazy, impish, full of bile and hungry for absolute power, they will not lend a hand to anyone outside their own little world until it's all gone to pot. Don't talk to me about people losing their homes. Homes are resellable.

There was no justice for Wallst. There was no justice for the rest of us. Period. Not a dem thing. It's a rich thing. and most of the rich mother@!$%#ers are on the OTHER side of the aisle. Boner grew up poor, but he'd just as soon put a bullet in his own head than go back. Tan up boys. I must find a place where voters research all sides and understand what they are researching. When I lived there, I worked in the largest employer in my city and there were always Liberaterian, Socialist, and other political supporters handing out literature at the gates. The only time there were moderate or more right leaning publications being handed out it was by me. I read all literature available and made up my own mind. As Margaret Thatcher once stated, "Socialism works well until the wealthy run out of money". WAKE UP AMERICA. We should not be a Socialist society. We were founded as a Republic and have been successful that way for two and one quarter centuries.
