Obama leads big with Hispanics, but they're not fired up and ready to go yet

Hispanics overwhelmingly approve of President Obama’s recently announced immigration policy and give him a 40-point lead over Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to results from a new NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Telemundo poll.

Obama’s job approval among Latinos has also seen a four-point boost, within the poll’s margin of error, since the immigration announcement.

President Barack Obama waves at supporters after speaking at Obama Victory Fund concert in Miami, Fla.

But the president still faces a challenge in energizing Latinos to vote. Hispanics -- the largest-growing demographic group in the country that could also hold the key to Obama’s re-election bid -- are not as interested in this election, so far, as they were at the same point during the 2008 election.

NBC/WSJ/Telemundo poll toplines.

Popular immigration policy

Obama’s recent executive order halting the deportation of illegal immigrants younger than 30 and brought to the United States as children is popular with all voters but even more so among Latinos.

Sixty-eight percent of all Americans said they favored Obama’s order, and 29 percent opposed it. Among Hispanic or Latino adults, almost nine-in-10 favored the new policy.

The poll was conducted June 20-24 after the president’s immigration pronouncement.

Big Obama lead

Obama is ahead of Romney with Hispanic registered voters, 66 to 26 percent, adding six points to his margin over Romney among Latinos from last month’s NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Telemundo poll.

In 2008, Obama won the group, 67 to 31 percent, according to exit polls.

Nearly two-thirds – 65 percent – of Latinos approve of the job the president is doing, up four points since May. That’s much higher than the 47 percent approval Obama gets from all Americans surveyed in the poll.

Obama’s advantage among Hispanic voters could prove especially important in swing states like Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico, where Latinos make up a large – and growing – portion of the electorate – as well as Virginia, where it is also on the rise.

Hispanics prefer Obama, Democrats on the issues – not just immigration

Romney has argued Latinos are not monolithic, that they care about more than just immigration. It’s one reason he has focused largely on the economy in his overtures toward Hispanic voters.

But, fundamentally, Latinos agree with Obama and Democrats on issues, ranging from immigration to health care to the economy and taxes.

They do so by much greater margins than the public at large; they are more optimistic about the country’s direction and economic outlook; and they believe in an expanded role for government.

For example:

  • 72 percent of Hispanics said the president inherited the economic situation; All respondents: 60 percent;
  • 64 percent said government should do more to help; All respondents: 49 percent;
  • 62 percent of Hispanics approve of Obama’s handling of the economy; All respondents: 42 percent;
  • 62 percent said the economy is recovering; All respondents: 51 percent;
  • 56 percent of Hispanics said last month’s jobs report, which showed just 69,000 jobs created, was a reason for optimism; All respondents: 43 percent;
  • By 50-16 percent, Hispanics prefer Democrats on immigration; All respondents: Democrats 33-30 percent;
  • By 48-20 percent, Hispanics said Obama’s push for health care was a good idea; All respondents: bad idea by 41-35 percent;
  • By 46-16 percent, Hispanics preferred Democrats on taxes; All respondents: Republicans 34-32 percent.
  • By 42-17 percent, Hispanics believe President Obama’s economic policies have helped not hurt; All respondents: 33-32 percent;
  • 42 percent of Hispanics said the country is on the right track; All respondents: 31 percent;
  • 30 percent of Latinos said the government was doing too many things; All respondents: 47 percent

"The advantage Democrats currently enjoy among Hispanics/Latinos can be measured of course by the 40-point edge on the presidential ballot by President Obama, but is also seen on the party issue handling sequence, where these respondents say Democrats would do a better job on every issue, even including such traditional Republican bulwarks as government spending, taxes, and terrorism,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the survey with Democrat Peter D. Hart.

Intensity gap: Not quite ¡Obama!

Despite Obama’s built-in advantages with Hispanics, he still faces warning signs among this key voting bloc, even after the immigration announcement. Hispanic voters are not quite as fired up and ready to go to the polls.

Despite jumps in approval for the president and an increased margin over Romney with Hispanics, Latinos indicate they are no more enthused about voting this fall than they were a month ago. Their interest in this election remains far below 2008 levels, and lags well behind other key groups this cycle.

To measure enthusiasm, the pollsters asked respondents to say how interested they are in this November’s contest, on a scale of one to 10. Adding up the 8s, 9s, and 10s gives a good measure of who the most likely voters will be this fall.

Two-thirds – 66 percent – of Latinos put themselves in this high-interest category. Last month, it was 68 percent. That’s much lower than the average of 80 percent in this poll for all adults.

It’s particularly problematic for Obama’s re-election chances, considering some of the highest-interest groups are ones likely to vote for Romney – Tea Party supporters (89 percent), McCain 2008 voters (88 percent), conservatives (84 percent), those 65 and older (83 percent), Republicans (83 percent), and whites (81 percent).

Several key Obama voting groups come in above 80 percent – post-grads (87 percent), urban voters (86 percent), college-educated women (84 percent), Democrats (83 percent), liberals (83 percent), Obama 2008 voters (83 percent), African Americans (81 percent).

But Hispanics and young voters, two key pieces of the puzzle, see a big drop off. Young voters are even lower than Latinos, at just 61 percent.

Consider that in July 2008, four-out-of-five Hispanics – 80 percent – were in the high-interest range. That rose to 100 percent by November, with 92 percent saying they were a 9 or 10.

In this poll, just 52 percent of Latinos said they were a 9 or 10, below the 68 percent of all respondents. In July 2008, 64 percent of Hispanics said they were 9s and 10s.

“The data also reminds us of the signal challenge to the president -- increasing interest, intensity and turn-out among Latinos,” McInturff said.

The pollsters asked another question to gauge enthusiasm. It asked directly how likely they were to vote and, in that category as well, Hispanics lagged behind the average of all adults – 76 percent of Latinos said they were “almost certain” to or “probably” would vote, far below the 93 percent that said so among all Americans.

Taking out those who said “probably,” the gulf is even wider – just 65 percent of Hispanics said they were “almost certain” to vote versus 88 percent of all respondents.

The one silver lining for Obama is the 57 percent of Hispanics said they were more enthusiastic about voting in this election than previous ones, higher than the 47 percent of all respondents who said so. But it doesn’t show up in the interest scale.

Translation: Hispanics like Obama and prefer him by wide margins to Romney, but, so far, they’re not energized – despite the immigration announcement.

But Hart cautioned that, even though the poll was conducted days after the immigration announcement, it’s likely too early to tell if it will resonate with the Latino community in the way Obama hopes.

“This is early,” Hart said. “Obviously, it’s a group that’s less likely to turn out, but now there’s a strong reason to turn out. They have a champion in their corner and an issue that they care about. We’re looking for an instantaneous chain reaction, and it’s too early to be expected.”

The poll has a margin of error of +/- 5.7 percent among all Latino respondents and 6.9 percent among Latino registered voters.

If so, that was one hell of a nap!

Hispanic leaders have already pledged to get out the vote on behalf of the President!

Feisty, the election is Tomorrow -

When the right wing SCOTUS has the chance to show that it is not really choosing Corporations over people.

Wow, they sure SHOWED MONTANANS yesterday - that they intend to punish state as well as federal elections with Citizens' United.

Like SCOTUS is for transparency and accountability, and taking good care of the American people?

Like human beings have health care issues?

Like all developing nations have had affordable, accessible health care for decades?

"Fired up and ready to go" may perhaps be an unfortunate choice of words here.

Unless you're talking about Mitt Romney's "self-deportation" plan.

In which case, that just about sums it up.

Sorry to say this to the MSNBainC portion of MSNBC

Considering Romney's failures to produce real J-O-B-S for the economy and the hateful things Romney says about Hispanics, I can't think of any other reason Hispanics to not be fired up.

The key issue is not energy. It's voter suppression and getting people to the polls. Republicans are breaking the laws of the Constitution; The 14th &19th Amendment.

Despite a pledge made on the President's Inauguration Day in January 2009 = to obstruct ALL President Obama's attempts to grow and revive our Economy in the middle of a Great Recession --

Despite GOP senators filibustering at 3 times the pace ever seen in American history.

Despite GOP blocking every jobs bill, including over a million in the American Jobs act.

4.3 million jobs have been created over the past 27 months, Manufacturing is back for the first time since the mid-nineties, companies are Insourcing, and Auto is back on top.

Despite ZeroZeroZeroZer help from GOP, our economy is stabilized and growing.

Unlike Europe where unemployment is as high as 25%.

No thanks to GOP/Koch that is still sabotaging the US economy and getting away with it.

bigbenalaska --

And every Obama green job has cost the American tax payer $11 million dollars each .... "LOL"

I don't know exactly what you think you mean by "fiscally responsible," but at least those people HAD jobs and were able to stay out of poverty and get good health care, and the money spent on the jobs, as you call it, was spent at least in part on building infrastructure and hiring contractors and such, and went elsewhere into the economy, providing more stimulation and supporting more jobs, not to mention leaving those companies with capital goods, like building and equipment.

In case you hadn't noticed, unemployment is DOWN since the stimulus was put into effect, and millions of jobs have been created in the PRIVATE sector.

Now, as for fiscal responsibility, why is it that I've never heard you criticize Rick Perry, for example, who took $20 billion or so of federal stimulus money, which was intended for job creation, but foolishly entrusted to the states, and used it to buy down Texas's debt. In other words, Perry transferred HIS debt right back to all of US and put it back on OUR credit card. And THEN he complained about the federal debt and claimed that the stimulus hadn't created any jobs.

Well, duh.

Now tell me, where is the fiscal responsibility in that? What do you suppose that Rick Perry learned from that exercise except to expect more handouts from the federal government?

And while we're at it, maybe you ought to check the viability of the thousands of jobs that Perry claims to have created in Texas, for which he also used taxpayer money and, in many cases, gave that money to HIS campaign donors, many of whom wasted it without actually producing any jobs or viable businesses.

Hundreds and hundreds of millions of Texas taxpayer dollars, for which Perry then covered by using federal stimulus money, for which YOU, bigbenalaska, and all the rest of us, are paying. And for which YOU, bigbenalaska, are blaming President Obama.

Cause and effect escaped you somewhere along the line, didn't it?

I know it is convenient to say that the poor can't afford to get an ID from the state, but many poor people have HDTV's, air conditioning, microwaves, cell phones etc...surely they need ID to cash their welfare checks....It should be a requirement to show ID when they check your name off of the registration forms at the polls. Obama’s job approval among Latinos has also seen a four-point boost, within the poll’s margin of error, since the immigration announcement.

So Obama, seeing his lead evaporate almost daily suddenly “evolves” his thinking that Gay Marriage should be legal and that illegal immigrants should not deported, and we’re supposed to think that he’s doing this simply on “principle?”

That’s sort of like believing that Feisty Redhead is simply a member of the general public and not a member of the MSNBC staff, whose job is post on the Newsvine to help give the appearance of support for Obama’s policies. I just had an epiphany...the progressive/liberal agenda reminds me of the movie "Demolition Man" after Sly Stallone gets unfrozen. I swear, if they get their way, the future will look like this:

Lenina Huxley: Ah, smoking is not good for you, and it's been deemed that anything not good for you is bad; hence, illegal. Alcohol, caffeine, contact sports, meat...
John Spartan: Are you sh!tting me?
Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.
John Spartan: What the hell is that?
Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.
Lenina Huxley: Bad language, chocolate, gasoline, uneducational toys and anything spicy. Abortion is also illegal, but then again so is pregnancy if you don't have a licence.

You can't make it up, folks. Seems they had progressives pegged even back in '93.

Dominico Montenaro (the author of the article) proves himself an imbecile once again.

68% of all Americans? Better go look at the poll you referenced you hack....it was conducted by Telemundo and contacted 100% hispanics. No wonder it had a 68% approval

How Obama is getting this approval is by violating his oath of office. I bet if he told the DEA to quit enforcing drug laws, his popularity amoung cocaine addicts would increase 4 points too.

The premise that this is a good law amoung hispanics is a joke. Look, it is the consitutional duty of the federal government, namely the executive branch, to protect our borders and uphold federal law. Obama and his administration are in outright violation of that by NOT following law.

He should be impeached, not glorified for pandering to a nationality.

I admit I am uneducated compared to my family at least as all I have is a BA, JD and an LLM. What I do know personally is that in my state where 95% of bot h houses of the legislature are controlled by Democrats that Romney was able to gain bipartisan support and move Massachusetts forward. I voted for Obama in 08, I'm an independent.

    I'm also white, male, college educated and support my family on a middle class income. My wife is also white and college educated working in the medical industry. I am what you might call a red neck, and both my family and my wife's family are what you would call a red neck. Some are in the military serving our country, fighting for OUR freedom. The rest work on the county roads plowing snow during the winter so we can all get to work and the stores, or fixing roads during the summer so we don't break an axle.

    There are two things that have turned me from Democrats in an extremely harsh way.

    1. What Obama has done to this country in the past 3.5 years.

    2. The liberal posters on these forums that are so filled with hate for anyone with an opinion that doesn't agree with their's. People like Fiesty, Beverly, Job1, Dennis, etc. If it takes that much hate, greed and jealousy to be in the democrat party, then I want nothing of it. I hope you all realize that with your posts on here, you're driving people away from you, instead of bringing them towards you.

    That is also why so many Hispanics are on the fence. They are realizing that the right wants them for cheap labor, and the left wants them for votes. Past that, neither party wants them for anything.

    Have fun with your election, what is meant to happen... will happen and I will accept that. But Obama and the left has pretty much permanently lost my vote.

    @SeekingSanity,

    I'm really happy you know my voting record more than I do myself, since I'm the one that placed my vote and all.... Continue on with the insults if it makes you feel like a better man.

    @granny22

    I've been on unemployment twice in my life; when Clinton did the defense cutbacks and the military was kicking us out of basic training left and right, and then when I lost my job in the bay area during the dot com crash.

    You'll find that most independents and those on the right don't have a problem with the concept of welfare and other social programs. What most of us have a problem with is the implementation. I know numerous individuals on the system for gas cards, food stamps, free cell phones, etc that are perfectly able to work. They just feel they are too good to pump gas or pull green chain in a mill. Another example is the food stamp program and the rampant abuse of it. I just read an article earlier this week (forget which site) where some of our politicians are wanting an itemized list of what products the food stamps are spent on. The response they received was the list wasn't allowed. Then it went on to talk about lobbying groups such as the Confectioners lobbying group that spends millions in campaign donations to disallow it. I have a problem with that after working as a grocery checker years ago, and random stops to Circle K where I see chips, candy, red bull, etc bought with my tax dollars. This isn't an attack on the poor people, it's an attack for people abusing the system. If the abuse wasn't there then the dollars WOULD be going to the POOR people, not the poor people getting whatever is left over after the LAZY people get done with it.

    As far as the rich, close all the loop holes, the majority of us are for that. But don't say that taxing the rich will solve all our ills because it won't even make a dent. Also, if you do that, they will leave the country driving jobs down even further and lowering how much our products are bought.

    Sending jobs overseas? Obama is as guilty of that as much as Bush, Clinton and the rest. Free trade agreements is a big reason I don't sign up for either party. Also, you might want to research Soros and Obama's friend at GE if you need a balancing act for the blame to place, both parties are to blame, and you, I and the rest of the citizens are the victim of political greed.

    There are two things that have turned me from Democrats in an extremely harsh way.

    Actually, it was people like you who turned me from the Republican party: the unremitting hatred from the Republican party for every non-white male.

    Essentially, the Republican party consists of two kinds of people: the elite who are too rich to do anything but try to think up more ways of owning the country and the sheeple who envy them and follow them.

    The Republican argument can be summed up fairly easily; it is the worry that somewhere, someplace, someone might be able to make better use of the system than me. No one deserves to take more from the system from me, so it is better to have no system at all than it is to have a system which benefits someone more.

    Essentially, it's a race to the bottom. It weakens America, and it weakens us as a people. If you don't feel hatred for what is being done to our country in the name of 'freedom', they you are either blind or a traitor.

    @Bryon,

    I'm not a republican, I'm a conservative independent. All the republicans I know (including my parents, brother and sister) are as far from racist and jealous as you can get. My dad lost his job in the defense industry under Clinton, and at 56 couldn't find another white collar job, he ended up pumping gas until he was 74. My mom sold Avon, and then ran an antique store she owned for 10 years until she was 70. My brother is a Chief Petty Officer in the navy and has been in for 22 years. My sister has her four year degree in accounting and runs her own accounting business. I'm a software engineer with 15 years experience and doing decently well.

    None of us care what color you are. All we expect is if you live here that you're a citizen, get a job and work for your family and your country.

    So I'm not sure how I'm jealous of the 'elite' or how I want what they have. We aren't trying to use the system, we're trying to work, raise our families, earn an honest living, and all we expect is what we have earned ourselves. We don't want what you earned, or what the rich have.

    Pretty much want people like you and the government to leave us alone :)

    So what you're saying is that we're being racist without realizing it just because we don't support Obama? I'm not voting for Obama for the same reason I didn't vote for Bush his second term... because he's a crappy president. I gave both Bush and Obama one term to prove themselves, they didn't so I voted otherwise. It has nothing to do with race at all.

    If anything the liberals are the most racist ones in this campaign strictly because you keep hammering on it. I'm just as sick of the racist conversation as I am the rest of the liberal crap this administration tries to force me to accept. Obama forced it with the T. Martin comment, Holder forced it with 'his people', this administration is racist... We are NOT!

You just labeled a very large percentage of our population as racists. Even white guys like myself who voted for Obama and now think Obama was a huge mistake for this country are in that group. The guy is half white for goodness sakes. But those on the left prefer to label him as black, as he does himself according to his census form, so they can pull out the race card at will. Do you honestly think that the posters on the left are that much more hateful than the ones on the right?

    Heartlight3, You lost most of us when you brought up Bush. We cannot vote for Bush now even if we wanted to. At what point does Obama take responsibility for his administration? Ronald Reagan righted the economy, destr0yed by Jimmy Carter, in just 2-years. How does Obama compare to that? You are correct in stating their are hateful folks on the right, but look at these messages and you tell me which side dominates the hate. The FR regulars are the leading haters and are undeniably lefties.

    Heartlight - you said the bad word - BUSH. The little righties want to forget he ever existed and took this country downhill. They'd rather put it ALL on Obama. You just have to ignore their lapse in memory. If they had to actually admit what Bush did - they wouldn't be able to post all of their hatred and lies.

    Bush is not a "bad word", it's just an over used excuse used to defend the failed Obama presidency. The poor state of the exconomy is not "all" on Obama. His own record speaks for itself. He has done little to right the ship. I was not a fan of Reagan, but he fixed Jimmy Carter's mess in the first 2-years of his presidency. Turns out he was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Was hoping Obama would be a good one too when I voted for him. Look what we got.

    Notice how even in this story the SNEAKY USE of the words "hispanic" and "latino".

    Just what is LATINO?

    It's not a race.

    It's not a color.

    It is a contraction for Latin America, a political grouping of third world countries from the western hehisphere.

    LATINO seems to mean ANTI-AMERICAN for Latinos have very little in common with America, democracy, or the American way of life.

    Latinos have more in common with another political party, the NAZIS, as they use intimidation as a weapon to attack their enemies.

    Obama should feel right at home with them.

    Notice in the photo how Obama is giving the "Seig Heil" salute to those quasi-Nazis.

      Hey Fisty and other libs,

      How can you continue to support Obama? Here are some of his pledges that have failed miserably:

      Today I am pledging to cut the deficit in half in my 1st term. Spoken at the fiscal responsibility summit Feb. 23 2009

      We will launch a sweeping effort to root out waste, inefficiency and unnecessary spending in our government, and every American will be able to see how and where we spend tax dollars by going to a new site call recovery.gov. Spoken at speech Jan. 28th 2009.

      There is no doubt we have been living beyond our means and we’re and we are going to have to make adjustments. Now what I have done throughout this campaign is to propose a net spending cut. Spoken during presidential debate Oct. 15, 2008

      We are going to ban ear marks. Spoken at a news conference Jan. 6 2009.

      Instead of letting big corporations slipping tax breaks into bills in the dead of night. We will make sure every single tax break and earmark is available to every American on line. Spoken on the campaign trail in June 2007.

      Under my plan, no family making under 250,000 dollars a year will pay any form of tax increases. Not your income tax not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax. Not any of your taxes. Spoken 2008 at a town Hall Meeting in Dover, NH.

      I will eliminate all income taxation for all seniors making less than 50,000 dollars a year. This will eliminate taxes on 7 million seniors-saving them an average of 1,400 dollars a year- and will also mean that 27 million seniors will not have to file a income tax return at all. From Barrack Obama presidential campaign fact sheet in 2008.

      My plan will not help speculators who took risky bets and bought homes not to live in but to sell. Spoken to an audience in Phoenix on Fe. 18th 2009.

      Lobbyist will not work in my Whitehouse. Spoken on his Iowa bus tour Dec. 15th 2007.

      We have a Philosophical difference, which we have debated repeatedly, and that is Senator Hillary Clinton believes that the only way we can universal health care is to force everyone to purchase it. Spoken during the democratic presidential debate Feb. 21st 2008

      These negotiations will be on C-span so the public will be part of the conversation and will see the decisions that are being made spoken Jan.20 2008.

      Barrack Obama and Joe Biden believe that the United States has to be frank with the Chinese about such failings and will press them to respect human rights. On a fact sheet distributed by the Obama campaign 2008.

      The detention facilities at Guantanamo individuals covered by this order shall be closed as soon as practical… no later than one year from this order. Presidential executive order Jan. 22 2009.

      We need tougher border security and a renewed focus on busting up gangs and traffickers crossing the border… That begins at home with comprehensive immigration reform. That means securing our borders and passing tough employer enforcement laws. Spoken in Miami May 23rd 2008

      I will make sure we negotiate NAFTA Feb 23 2008

      I’m going to clean up both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. My administration will be the toughest on ethic laws than any administration in history

      Actually, Byron, AlexM's post was very respectable, eloquent, and to the point. There was nothing hateful or racist about his post in any way. He also summarizes exactly the way I feel. Your hate rhetoric of labeling everyone who has a different view as a "racist" has pushed me to voting Republican this election more so than anything Mitt Romney or the Republican party will ever say or do. You can be really proud of yourself.

          @Heartlight,

          You might have missed one of my posts, but I stated that I voted for Bush his first term, and didn't vote for him his second term for the same reason I won't vote for Obama a second term. I gave Bush a chance, but did not agree with what he was doing, so he lost my vote.

          As far as posters, it all depends on what site you go to. I happen to pretty much only post on msnbc. Most of (what I would consider) the true middle of the road sites I've read don't allow posting. If you go to Huffington, you'll read rabid left posts, if you go to CNS, you'll read rabid right posts. While I do consider msnbc a left leaning site, it's 'usually' fairly tame towards the center. The liberal posters on this site do appear (to me) to be harsh towards anyone not agreeing with them. But that doesn't mean that only liberal posters are mean. :)

            When people or groups of people are not motivated to vote it seems to mean a couple of things.

            The first thing is that a person is satisfied enough with things overall that they are not motivated to vote in an effort to change things.

            Secondly, people may feel that there is little reason to vote because things will stay the status-quo regardless of the outcome of the election.

            What this article points out in my opinion is that Hispanics, overall, are very satisfied with president Obama. What they need to recognize is that each and every vote for Obama will help to continue his efforts to make their lives better. If they become complacent and fail to vote, it could sway the election toward NitMitt and that would not be in their best interest.

            Hey, I'm voting for Romney and yes I do like the idea of having young kids given a special consideration, however up to 30 years of age, is way too much.

            Feisty do you really think that spanish leaders speak fro all Hispanics?

            A couple of facts: Cubans overwhelming will vote republican even if they are register Democrats. The reason is the meaning of the word Democrat is taken different in Spanish.

            Dominicans: most vote Republican. you can google this if you like.

            Obama is ahead of Romney with Hispanic registered voters, 66 to 26 percent, adding six points to his margin over Romney among Latinos from last month’s NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Telemundo poll.

            Who in today's world belives anything that NBC and or Telemundo says.

            I do not even believe MSN when they favor Romney.

            I check with my sister from Miami. She is also Black/Hispanic/woman. and she goes out dancing almost every night and most of the crowd wants our President out in 2012.

            Festy and Company had their marching points given out today but no matter what--------- Romney and anybody in 2012. Correct the error of 2008.

Don't quote me on that last part, but i do know older people in Miami will vote republican. Many business owners in miami that like less taxes and aren't very happy about the fair share part that Obama wants.

Whining, complaining and blaming won't get your guy re-elected.

            Thanks for the invitation, I love talking about the President's accomplishments:

            All the American car companies are profitable again for the first time since 2006 - I want a Chevy Volt! Can you imagine? A car you almost never have to buy gas for! President Obama agreed to the auto bailout, to save manufacturing jobs, and that it did.

            Qaddafy is gone, baby gone. That monster has been a thorn in America's side since he supported the Lockerbie bomber. Qaddafy had a crush on Condi Rice, which tells you all you need to know about how Republican administrations handled him. The Obama administration handled his ouster brilliantly - no boots on the ground!

            Overall improvement in our standing abroad. Our allies can actually work with the American President, instead of cringing when they see him coming. (Who can forget Bush giving Merkel a backrub?)

            Young people can stay on their parents' insurance policy until age 26 - this has been a life-safer for a young woman in our community who had a double lung transplant. Young people typically don't need much expensive medical help, but, boy when they do, it can decimate their futures getting saddled with medical debt if they are uninsured.

            Insurance companies required to cover contraceptives - a real savings for young women in entry level positions, who get benefits but struggle to pay out of pocket expenses.

            Gay people can now serve openly in the military. THey don't have to lie, and we aren't losing translators, among other service people, over that old policy anymore either.

            I can go on and on...

            Us liberals consistently posted Obama's accomplishments on FR, but the problem is that too many righties lack basic reading/comprehension skills, so it became a waste of time. It is much easier for the righties to whine, piss, and moan rather than come to the table with discussion points.

            The New Extremist Republicans had NO implanted in their brains by Norquist, signed their votes away for NO TAXES, and by the way, for that action, need to be tried for treason! Our President did everything but lay down for the extremists in trying to get deficit reduction last summer. However, good ol' boy Mitch got on national television and announced they had only one priority and that was to make this President a one term president...not jobs, not deficit reduction, not improving the economy. This has been the focus for the whole time Obama has been in the White House and even before he had his inauguration. You can't transform government with a group of A..holes with these kinds of attitudes and behaviors! Extremists on the right have been consistent with their goals...get that black man out of the White House! They are now trying to buy this election because that is the only way they will win it. Thank you, activist judges on the Supreme Court for giving them the rights to do that. Oh, you can google for the very extensive list of accomplishments of this Administration, but I seriously doubt you want to read that.

            Before going further, it should be said that the goal of business is rarely to create jobs per se. The goal is to produce a product or service that customers will pay for at a price that allows the business to turn a profit. By responding to and, in some cases, creating consumer demand, business leaves society as whole better off than it would be with central planning and/or without a profit motive. Often, this means creating jobs in one place while destroying jobs in another. For example, the mechanization of agriculture created jobs at John Deere and International Harvester while dramatically reducing the need for farm labor.http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ci_19793316

            Educated people......Why is it on these post there is more name calling done by the left than the right? You say how dumb the republicans are, you have dumb fux and or a donkey screwing an elephant as your picture, you call the tea party tea baggers the list goes on.

            I sit on both sides of the fence. There is good and bad with both parties and I really don't think either party cares about we "common people." They care only about themselves and being able to continue living their life of luxury. I find it hard as an independent thinker to take your post seriously with all of the name calling. You sound like children on the play ground and "mine is better than yours, so naaaa." Adults?

              Meanwhile...the msm ignores the fact many Republicans dislike their candidate so much, they will write in Ron Paul or vote for the official Libertarian candidate, former New Mexico governor, Gary Johnson.

              White male voters are not as monolithic, as the msm likes to protray them. In addition to supporting Obama's re-elelection, plenty of them dislike Romney (who doesn't?) and would support a third party candidate.

              I can't stop laughing at all the Republicans who hate Obama for his stimulus providing $250 billion in tax breaks, his 2.2% tax break for worker, tax breaks for businesses hiring vets, 2010 bill giving businesses a 100% investment tax break in 2011 and 50% in 2012.

              It would appear today's Republicans can't stand tax breaks for American citizens and for American businesses.

              We Republicans believe that if you pay someone off for screwing up and never force them to confront their errors that they'll learn nothing; lose the money again and make the same errors. We prefer one mistake. Progressives prefer a lifetime. Since you're such a genius are you aware that the 2.2% tax break wipes out a social security contribution and instead of bankrupting the treasury Obama chose to bankrupt Social Security instead of fixing it. You're happy that Obama sold out everyone under 30?

              That is a rather broad unfounded statement. Bush asked for two stimulus packages and got them, but suddenly when it comes to Obama using a stimulus, the Republicans get cold feet. It seems the Republicans learn nothing.

                  So you also support voter suppression measures?

                  How would you feel if the republicans did to you as they did to many other legally registered voters in FL recently? They hand picked many registered independent and democrat voters in FL as not having the right to vote because of a host of reasons that they trumped up to keep them from voting. Then they did this without allowing enough time for the people to refute the claims.

                  This is the party you are backing?

                  How much support will you continue to offer if they did the same to you?

                  The GOP is desperate and will stop at nothing to win an election. People like you continue to support them so they are encouraged to not only do they same in the future, but they will almost certainly come up more horrendous measures in their attempts to win elections.

                  Peggy, try to be realistic. Not every citizens was targeted. The GOP targeted groups of people in cities/counties where very heated elections were to take place. They did everything in their power to sway those elections by claiming that many democrats/independents were registered illegally.

                  Peggy, the Republican-majority state legislature here passed a law eliminating same-day voter registration, a system that had worked well in Maine for 40 years. They changed the rules just to make it harder for young people, who typically move around alot, and who typically vote Democratic, to register to vote on election day.

                  This even after the Republican Secretary of State investigated back ten years and discovered no voter fraud related to same day registration.

                  Voters in Maine overturned that law with 60% of the vote, via refrerendum. Maine residents will not stand for efforts at supressing the vote. Why are Florida residents unwilling to stand up for democracy?

                  I am still registered (I checked back when all this started) in Alabama even though I now live in North Carolina and have for two years plus. With no verification at the polls, I could vote here and then go back there and vote again knowing what my old address was and that is all they ask when you enter. How would they investigate that as fraud? So you see, fraud is hard to prove if everyone is on the rolls appears to be legally registered, thus the infrequency of voter fraud reported. You can't prove it if someone slips in and appears to be legal.

                    #7.11 - Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:08 PM EDT

                    You're going to fly to Alabama to vote in an election and also vote in North Carolina?

                    Our Secretary of State investigated allegations that Maine college students were voting in their home states as well as in Maine. Turned out there were ZERO cases of this happening over the past ten years. ZERO. Naturally, the Republican Secretary of State still sent all Maine college students a letter warning them of the illegality of such an act.

                    Talk to - Sure you could. But is it worth the expense? The time and amount of money spent, not to mention break the law, to gain 1 vote is hardly worth it. You could apply your time and money to the campaign and get better voting results.

                    The point is that it is to expensive to hire people to fraudulently vote and make a difference in a general election.

                    The only worthwhile way to do it is either by tampering with machines, or pushing legislation that makes it hard for people to register.

                    I haven't heard of any machine tampering lately, but if you want talk about the latter, you can always talk to Rick Scott.

                    No I am not going to. The point is, by just having to state my old address to vote, anyone who is still there and wanted to take the effort to, could say they were me knowing that because I moved (or even died for that matter) and wasn't taken off the rolls, could commit the fraud. That is where the expression "dead people voting" comes from. Someone finds out that several people in his district or polling jurisdiction died, a list could be compiled, "voters" from outside that district recruited, and votes be placed. Hell if I knew my neighbor was registered but for whatever reason wasn't going to take the time, I could be him. For me personally, it isn't worth the penalty for the crime.

                        If you really were a "proud Republican" what changed? We are pro-life because our Constitution guarantees the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. We are for individual rights, not the "rights of the collective" which is a Socialist trait, we believe in a strong defense, we believe in the sovereignty of our nation and we are proud of our country. We believe that saying the pledge of allegiance isn't degrading, we fly our American flag proudly, we are patriotic, we believe in the American culture, not the European one we fought and died to free ourselves from. We believe in helping other people but not in making them slaves to the government. We believe in a limited government based on the Constitution and we believe that Capitalism (not Crony Capitalism) has made our country the most successful nation in the history of this planet.

                        Now that you are a liberal, what exactly does your side stand for?

                        "As anyone who has done their homework knows, GE is bringing 70% of it's manufacturing back to the US by the end of 2014. "

                        and when challenged for proof:

                        "Still looking for where I read 70% of GE back in US "

                        Evidently she didn't do her homework. If I were her I wouldn't be so quick to call other people stupid... Too funny.

                        I would be interested to see GE bringing back jobs to the US. We have a major GE plant here in my town (Bloomington, IL) that has been sitting empty for years, not one news agency here is talking about the plant re-opening, sadly.

That's when I read about the 4 micro-centers. There are 10 other companies who committed to bring jobs back. As you said, it's a start - we just need more to do the same.

                        Seperation of church and state anyway, so it doesn't matter or at least it shouldn't.

                          Of course we'll have to replace Baseball with Soccer as our Official National "pasttime", and we need to replace the 4th of July with May-Day, where we can all dance around the May-Pole to show our diversity and that we can "all just get along". Now isn't that Special?

                          But other than that, things will kind of still be the same, but we'll need your Guns for "safe-keeping", and of course we'll be issuing Islamic "prayer-mats" for morning prayer ever day. God Bless you and God Bless the USA.

                          I can't wait till Obama stacks the Supreme Court with some more Marxists, and Socialists, and maybe some old-fashion-style, dirty-Soviet-commies.

                          Remember, I can say the above, because I was once a proud Republican, but then I remember the horrific and hideous Bush/Cheney years and Haliburton and Blackwater and the "outing of our American deep-cover" operative Valerie Plame, and I can never go back.

                          Plus that wannabe "Outsource and Chief" Mitt Romey just wants to Destroy the Working and Middle-Class. that's Not just wrong, that's Sick.

                              A doctor from Israel says: "In Israel the medicine is so advanced
                              that we cut off a man's testicles; we put them into another man, and in
                              6 weeks he is looking for work."

                              The German doctor comments: "That's nothing, in Germany we take part

                              of the brain out of a person; we put it into another person's head, and

                              in 4 weeks he is looking for work."

                              A Russian doctor says: "That's nothing either. In Russia we take out
                              half of the heart from a person; we put it into another person's
                              chest, and in 2 weeks he is looking for work."

                              The U.S. doctor answers immediately: "That's nothing my colleagues,

                              you are way behind us....in the USA, about 2 years ago, we grabbed a

                              person from Kenya with no brains, no heart, and no balls....we made him

                              And yet, you show up at an emergency room without a health insurance card, cause you have a "right" to get medical care without buying insurance.

                              EMTALA?

                              That was Reagan's brainchild.

                              Hush though. Reagan could do no ill. He didn't give out handouts in medical care he...errr...

                              Shucks, he gave out handouts. Because his base demanded them :)

                              Because republicans are the ultimate freebie getters.

                              "Aaron Carroll of Indiana University tells us that in 2010, residents of the 10 states Gallup ranks as “most conservative” received 21.2 percent of their income in government transfers, while the number for the 10 most liberal states was only 17.1 percent." -

                              "Cornell University’s Suzanne Mettler points out that many beneficiaries of government programs seem confused about their own place in the system. She tells us that 44 percent of Social Security recipients, 43 percent of those receiving unemployment benefits, and 40 percent of those on Medicare say that they “have not used a government program.”

                              "Presumably, then, voters imagine that pledges to slash government spending mean cutting programs for the idle poor, not things they themselves count on. And this is a confusion politicians deliberately encourage. For example, when Mr. Romney responded to the new Obama budget, he condemned Mr. Obama for not taking on entitlement spending — and, in the very next breath, attacked him for cutting Medicare."

                              Awesome.

                              Republicans = Moochers against handouts.

                              I've said it before.

                              Sometimes I wish the Republicans could actually invoke their 'vision'. Their own base would be the first to perish in fire and starvation.

                              Got my own insurance that I pay for with my money that I make. Not willing or needing to take any handouts from you or the government. I have 5 kids (a lawyer and a teacher so far) others still in school. Guess what, even with the professions they are conservatives. I am one of those uneducated white men that has raised a family and done quite well for myself. The opportunities are still out there for you to make something of yourself too. I wish you luck!

                              I hope they were all a product of private schools, then. Otherwise? You totally just received government monies to get your kids educated.

                              Doubly-so if they went to a State College.

                              And Triply-so if they went to a State College using in-state tuition rates.

                              And your teacher-child is a conservative? Again, I hope it's a public school or she's actively trying to sabotage herself.

                              How does your lawyer-son feel about Tort Reform? Does his practice-type do civilian or criminal cases?

                              Teknishan - regarding your post about "republican moochers" assuming that it is either farmers, or poor people receiving the majority of the government support in your example, wouldn't it actually be possible to read it in another light? : even though they would be receiving the most amount of benefits, they still vote conservative, and therefore are the LEAST to mooch?!?!

                              Regarding your "actively trying to sabotage herself" comment - some people might be thinking about the country as a whole, whether something is legal or not, etc. as opposed to how it affects their own personal daily lives. *This is a response that can be said about/towards both sides. I just think it seems like you're here to sabotage anyone that comes off as a conservative republican, without giving much thought to someonelse's side/thoughts...

                              I receive my health insurance through my employer. My sister is an upper income professional who buys her own insurance. We both vote Democratic.

                              My brother is a self employed mason, who climbs around on roofs, building chimneys in the hot sun, and he gets covered under Medicaid, because he has a family and his income is low enough to qualify. He votes Republican, not only that, Tea Party Republican.

                              Go figure.

                              Askaboutet;

                              Ok.
                              So it's farmers or poor people. It doesn't make much difference, simply illustrating that a lot of 'Republicans' should be especially against the current Republican blue-print, since it affects them the most adversely.

                              Doesn't really matter who, what, where or why. It matters that 40% of people on the Dole don't realize they're on the dole. That's just flat ignorance, regardless of which party it comes from.

                              Unfortunately, a disproportionate amount of the 'flat ignorance' is coming from people who are yelling 'no handouts!' and 'keep your hands off my medicare', which in itself is pretty awesome.

                              I don't fully grasp how voting conservative innately makes your 'least' to mooch, though.

                              If you're on the dole in any fashion (public schooling, public transportation vouchers, medicare, SS, unemployment insurance, injury compensation, disability, etc), and you vote Republican which as a party has expressly demonized 'handouts' and 'subsidies', you are either;

                              A) intentionally voting against your own interests

                              or B) unintentionally voting against your own interests (AKA - Ignorant).

                              Admittedly, I'm sure a lot of Republicans are not on the dole in any fashion. But if we subtract them from the ones who are, you'll find the republican party is instead representing far, far less people than their current registration numbers would indicate.

                              Sixty-eight percent of all Americans said they favored Obama’s order, and 29 percent opposed it."

                              They didn't jump the fence when they were 2, mamacita made them do it.

                              It's not their fault they're here, and they're doing the best they can in the situation they're in.

                              The sins of the father do NOT pass unto the seventh generation.

                              And slavery is NOT legal, not even from neighboring countries. And wearing two different types of cloth ARE permitted and is not a death offense. And homosexuality is NOT a stoning offense either. Also, touching a women during her 'unclean' part of the month is not cause for death either. Leviticus, all of it.

                              Ya, actually, right when I wrote it I realized it's not the same because the kid could be smoking it by choice, but I was applying it more to a situation where a 15 year old kid hopped the fence with his "mamacita" and did so obviously knowing it was illegal, hung out for 10 years under the radar and now gets to stay.

                              I'm not "hating" on anyone, I just think immigration law is essential for every country (even against me!!!) and not enforcing laws is just as illegal as breaking them.

                              Anyways, I don't hate. The real racist thing (I think at least for a lot of people) is that YOU'RE assuming that I'm "racist" because YOU'RE picturing me kicking out mexicans or something. If someone came from canada, ireland, china, etc. and they were here illegally, I would think it would still be illegal for them to stay... is that not right?

                              Not everyone here is as partisan as yourself. I can believe former Obama supporters voting against him, because I'm in the same bracket. His flip-flop on the mandate clause is a big betrayal for me, but his violation of the oath of office choosing not to enforce the laws of this land is unforgivable. In my case it is not just an issue about "feelings", it's a policy issue too. Obama's gone far left and I can see other independents and some moderate Dems being disappointed as well.

                                #17.10 - Wed Jun 27, 2012 7:28 PM EDT

                                beto-lara - and what exactly is Romney offering that makes you want to vote for him? He has said absolutely nothing. Obama has NOT violated the oath of office. That is a lie told over and over again by Republicans.

                                Illegals have been here for decades. President Obama deported more than any other President - did you also accuse Bush of violating his oath of office? Probably not.

                                President Obama isn't even close to far left. But, if you vote for Romney you will take this country backward 100 years. How sad that is your preference.

                                @SeekingSanity,

                                1. He would work to get rid of the Healthcare bill, which I didn't mind too much until a mandate was added to it.

                                2. I don't see a Republican suspending deportations - the whole notion that only "criminals" will get deported, is blatantly stupid. Looking aside the issue of being here illegally, illegals aren't considered criminals until they actually get caught committing a crime and thus have a record for it. So there's no aspect of prevention in that policy. Under this catch-release deportation policy illegal immigrants who have committed murder, rape or engage in drug-trafficking are essentially free to roam the country as long as they haven't been caught for those crimes. If he were to clean up the estimated $4.2 billion dollars a year lost to illegals from tax credits, that would fund more deportations instead.

                                3. Keystone pipeline might still be saved - although the Chinese might have jumped ahead of us, after Obama neglected to act on this.

                                4. Excessive green projects. A lot of wasted money on that. You have to know when to cut your losses and Obama showed little restraint in "green" investments.

                                  The irony here is that illegal immigration hurts a big chunk of the non-hispanic democrat coalition. Huge percentages of blacks and young workers are unemployed, now the President goes along and tries to increase their competition for jobs --and please don't give me that BS that the majority of high school & college educated illegal immigrants are aspiring to be fruitpickers--, but alas that core would vote themselves off a cliff with their partisan devotion. Obama is no Bill Clinton.

                                    Last year it was reported that military chaplains were being ordered by the Pentagon to perform same-sex marriages, even though it violates their faith. In response, thousands of military chaplains said that this was one order that they would refuse to carry out.
                                    Then earlier this year, we reported on a new Pentagon order telling military chaplains that if they preached against sin, including homosexuality, that they could be charged with sedition and treason. It seems that these were only the beginning skirmishes in the militarys war on Christianity.

                                    I was going to ask "reported by who?", but then decided to just find the Pentagon memo itself:

                                    http://www.politico.com/static/PPM169_110929_signed_chaplains_memo.html

                                    As you can see, it clearly states that chaplains MAY participate or officiate in ceremonies, IF said ceremony is not contrary to any state or local laws, AND the chaplain is NOT required to do so "if doing so would be in variance with the tenets of his or her religion or personal beliefs". Oh, and just for the icing on the cake, it also notes that "a military chaplains participation in a private ceremony does not constitute an endorsement of the ceremony by the DoD".

                                    Got any more lies you'd care to share?

                                    I don't have a problem with righties criticizing the Obama administration.. as long as it's not a completely fabricated strawman like this thread.

                                    This is why Fox News et al are so dangerous, they're churnning out straw at a dizzying rate and the misinformed are buying all of it.

                                    Why would the Hispanics be fired up to vote for Obama? He has promised them so much and has failed to deliver on any of them. Obama's latest gimmick to grant "back door amnesty" will back fire. My question is, and no one on the left seems to want to answer it, when there is currently a high unemployment rate among Hispanics why would they (Hispanics) vote to add more to the unemployment rolls or take jobs that should go to those that came here legally?

                                    Why would Hispanics be fired up for Obama. The Hispanic unemployment rate is over 11% and Obama/Holder shipped over 1,000 guns to Mexico which have resulted in the killing of hundred of Hispanic people. I can see the lack of enthusiasm for either guy. To a Hispanic, this is truly the lesser of two evils. In which case, not big push for either

                                    Maybe a reason why, WE, support democrats and Obama is because of the stereotypical, belittling attitude the majority of the right have of us. From Republican politicians on down to their adherents. See the posts from the righties here calling us takers, assuming we are only unskilled laborers, uneducated, lazy, un-American. Family has been here since the 1920's, uncles, dad, cousins, inlaws have fought in Korea, Vietnam, Afganistan. To those righties they don't see us as Americans they assume we just recently waded across the river.

                                    However, WE, will push Obama over the finish line in Colorado, New Mexico, Florida, California. Will help determine New Jersey, New York, Illinois. We are millions strong and our voices will be heard. Eventually in a couple of cycles we will put Texas into play. Deal with it.

                                      Dog: you are not speaking for all Hispanics, most of us are leaving or have left the Democratic party and voting independently! Many of us are here legally and will be insulted by a blanket amnesty. Yes, those of us who work are not happy with the planned income tax increases, the expansion of Federal Government, continued unemployment, outlandish gasoline prices, and the direction of the democrats to the European economies which are failing. The Independent Party movement means nobody owns me. Take that Mecha philosophy somewhere else.

                                        An objective analysis would look for a root cause of this kind of disconnect between most American voters and this survey.

                                        An obvious reason which isn't addressed by the article is that most if not all come from countries with totalitarian dictatorships (even with so-called elections) where the govt has the power to do whatever they want. So Hispanics are not bothered by the "business as usual" approach of totalitarianism that Obama and the Democrats are seeking

                                        I have an idea. For every illegal alien we give permanent status to, we deport a liberal to Mexico. It's really a win, win for both countries. We get a hard working, family oriented individual that values the opportunities our country has to offer and Mexico gets a, a, um a person who is, um. Okay, maybe it's not a "win, win" but at least we get rid of a few liberals.

                                        Even further, Obama has a 10-1 favorability rating among Hispanic illegals. Why do you think Obama and Holder do not want any identification at the polling place requirements. Why do you think they are so dead seat against Florida cleaning illegals off the voting roles. How are you going to get that illegal alien voting block out en mass if you are going to make them prove they are eligible.

                                            Is there any reason TO vote for Romney? There is none; he is telling people what they want to hear with no details. How will he cut the deficit while cutting taxes and raising military spending; the 2 are counter one another. How can he make the environment cleaner while at the same time cutting environmental regulations, he can't. Romney supporters are being given following the Pied Piper, he tells them exactly what they want to hear but they aren't being smart enough to ask the key question "How will you do it"? When the press asks, he brushes it off, why, because he is empty.

                                              Mr. Ken, the reason to vote for Mr. Romney is the fact that "Mr. Obama" failed his own culture, plus he failed the people of these United States. The Afro-Americans thought the promese he made were true and were lead down the garden path. If you still believe that he is going to help, I feel sorry for you. You are watching an ignorant, unproductive, so call educated man destroy this country little by little. He took Socilistic teachings from the knee of the biggest Communist in this country. His teacher is a man that used a Bomb in our country and never saw a day of prison. Now that trator teaches a a reputable college and calls himself a American Professor. You unfortunately do not get the fact that if Obama and his cronies stay in office, this won't be a free country in the very near future. And remember this too. As far as Obama-care goes, when they deny you medical support, and put you out of your misery, remember that you have Obama and his cronies to thank. When they put a member of your family down like destroying a cat, dog, or any animal you remember what was said to you about you unreasonable belief in a man that has shown himself to be a complete traitor to this country.
