NBC/WSJ poll: Six in 10 say Obama inherited current economy

Another set of numbers from our new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll: 60 percent say President Obama inherited the current economic conditions, compared with 26 percent who blame his policies for the state of the economy.

That's a slight change from Aug. 2011, when 56 percent said the president inherited the economy, versus 33 percent who singled out his policies.

Yet when asked in a separate question whether the president’s policies have helped or hurt the economy, 33 percent say they’ve hurt; 32 percent say they’ve helped; and another 32 percent answer that they haven’t made much of a difference.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted of 1,000 adults and which has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- is released at 6:30 pm ET.

Well DUUUUUUUUUH! Reagan inherited a FAR WORSE economy from Carter than Obama inherited from Bush 43. Four years later Reagan had our country poised for the greatest economic turn around since the Great Depression. 3.5 years after Obama's election he has failed to turn around the economy and seems to STILL have No Clue of what to do except BLAME Bush.

ssmithlg, I bet there are 2 more things you believe.

1. Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.

2. Weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.

Just a normal person..... you should never ASS-U-ME.

1. Don't be an Idiot, Saddam violated 16 United Nations Security Council resolutions since the end of "Desert Storm". For more than a decade, Saddam Hussein deceived and defied the will and resolutions of the United Nations Security Council by, among other things: continuing to seek and develop chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and prohibited long-range missiles; brutalizing the Iraqi people, including committing gross human rights violations and crimes against humanity; supporting international terrorism; refusing to release or account for prisoners of war and other missing individuals from the Gulf War era; refusing to return stolen Kuwaiti property; and working to circumvent the United Nation's economic sanctions.

2. As for weapons of mass destruction... can you spell "Dirty Bomb? On July 7, 2008 the American Forces Press Service released a statement of the completion of a classified mission dubbed "Operation McCall" to transfer 500 metric tons of yellowcake at the request of the Iraqi government from Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center near Baghdad to Canada.

Oh come now you cannot expect GOPERS to believe that anyone in the country would think that Bush/Cheney did anything but greatness under their reign, they of course didn't put two WARS on the credit card, have those cozy meetings with the oil companies, tell everyone things were coming up roses when they new the housing market and wall street were crashing, while making certain during their entire stay in the WH that the wealthy, and that would of course include them, got hugh tax breaks, then they ran out the door handing Obama the keys and said remember it was like this when we came in.

It was the Reagan administration that created the Savings and Loan scandal in the mid 80's. They de-regulated the savings and loans so that the savings & loans could invest in real estate, which they previously were prohibited from doing. After many savings and loans, invested heavily in real estate, the Reagan administration decided to re-regulate and not allow savings and loans to invest in real estate, thereby creating a giant mess for savings and loans and then prosecuting some for not wanting to divest of their real estate holdings. The Republicans are good at creating messes and not wanting to take responsibility for them.

Don't Be Fooled, The Obama Unemployment Rate Is 11%

When Barack Obama entered office in January, 2009, the labor force participation rate was 65.7%, meaning nearly two-thirds of working age Americans were working or looking for work.

When the recession supposedly officially ended in June, 2009, the labor force participation rate was still 65.7%.

In the latest, much celebrated, unemployment report, the labor force participation rate had plummeted to 63.7%, the most rapid decline in U.S. history. That means that under President Obama nearly 5 million Americans have fled the workforce in hopeless despair.

The trick is that when those 5 million are not counted as in the work force, they are not counted as unemployed either. They may desperately need and want jobs. They may be in poverty, as many undoubtedly are, with America suffering today more people in poverty than in the entire half century the Census Bureau has been counting poverty. But they are not even counted in that 8.3% unemployment rate that Obama and his media cheerleaders were so tirelessly celebrating last week.

If they were counted, the unemployment rate today would be a far more realistic 11%, better reflecting the suffering in the real economy under Obamanomics.

Our age demographics aren't evenly spread. There will be a natural dip in labor force participation as the baby boomers retire. How are these retirees accounted for in your figures?

Many folks are not retiring at normal ages due to uncertainty about Medicare and the economy. We know Medicare can't go on without reform, but have no idea what will happen.

          #63.2 - Tue Jun 26, 2012 6:33 PM EDT

Perhaps...but many companies have a mandatory 65 years old retirement age. It isn't discrimination if it's across the board for everyone; only if people are singled out for retirement and others allowed to stay.

I really don't know the number. I've hear a 300,000 monthly figure, but could not confirm that.

Yes he OBVIOUSLY inherited the worst economy since the great depression, two unfunded wars, a housing market in shambles, biggest banking scandals in history, and we were peeling off 7000,000 jobs a month (the last 5 months of Bush presidency). We all SHOULD know this but we have very short memories in this country and that is also part/parcel to our political problems. Throw out the baby with the bath water mentality! Yes most of us indeed realize all this, but we are a nation of 30 minute sitcoms. A problem is presented within the first 5 minutes of a show, and 30 minutes later all is well. The ruining of America is about 5 presidents in the making and it's going to take at least 2-3 more of them in the future to get out of this. 60% of the nation knows this but an alarming 40% isn't buying it. Amongst all the hyperbole is common sense and actual knowledge but it can't be executed by those who have the most power to exact change, out representatives.

You can try to hide your racism from yourself, justify it, call it something else...but the fact is your hate, ignorance and fear are pretty obvious...If you don't think this opposition to President Obama has much to do with racism you pretty much nail the ignorant thing...

The economy was crashing well before Bush left office. While running for office he painted himself as a fiscal conservative, but he exercised no restraint and doubled the national debt, not to mention his wholesale dismantling of our Constitutional liberties while declaring, "The Constitution's just a damn piece of paper!"

Obama promised changed but was far worse than Bush. He tripled the national debt, and spent more than all previous presidents combined. He gave us four years of trillion dollar plus deficits, and has only dug the financial black hole much, much deeper!

President Obama’s 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) put the last nail in the coffin of our Constitution. According to Senator Dianne Feinstein. "Congress is essentially authorizing the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens, without charge," she said. "We are not a nation that locks up its citizens without charge."

Bush and Obama were the two most incompetent presidents in American history. History will not be kind!!!

You can poll 100 people watching a church burn and ask them if they BELIEVED an atheist started the fire and also ask if they could PROVE the atheist started the fire with much different results. You can also BELIEVE one atheist stated the fire, without definitive proof, and think the garbage man who believes in God fighting the fire is doing a lousy job and want to call in a different atheist who happens to be fireman to fix what you believe the first atheist started and the garbage man made worst.

Roughly 99 out of 100 economists would contribute the "good Bush years" to the real estate bubble, as well as a credit bubble. They would also agree with the majority in this poll.

Bush encouraged the housing bubble in an effort to boost the economy out of the dot.com recession and to pay for the wars. If the wars had gone as planned, and been shorter, with less cost, it might have worked. They weren't and it didn't.

The recovery is slow due to a lack of demand, caused by unemployment and lost credit.

I've seen it. You are being scammed. In 2004, the GSEs were not in trouble over subprime mortgage portfolios. They were in trouble over accounting scandals, excessive lobbying, and the general "moral hazard" of having a quasi-government guarantee against failure for ANY reason.

Google "2004 HUD Proposal for GSE Participation in Affordable Housing." HUD was complaining that the GSEs were not underwriting ENOUGH subprime mortgages and saying that the GSEs should be leading that market.

About the time the GSEs DID start responding, the market began tampering off and they ended up buying and/or underwriting a lot of the worst of the toxic stuff coming from the front line lenders and Wall Street banks, who were just beginning to catch on, to what was coming.

Paulson went to Congress in July 2008 to request the authority to place them into conservatorship IF NECESSARY. July 2008. When asked if he thought it would be necessary, he replied, "no, but I'd liked to have the bazooka in my pocket." A couple of months later, he was using the bazooka.

No one...repeat...no one in the Bush Administration complained about the investment portfolio of the GSEs, until it was much, much too late. They complained about a lot of other valid GSE mistakes...but NOT the investments, other than in a general philosophical way about them being too big to fail.

And, of course, one of the reasons the crash in late 2008 was so severe is that the failure wasn't seen until it was too late and the Administration's denials, that went on through 2008, about how the recession (which started in December 2007) was just "a blip" and the fundamentals were strong.

After the firestorm of this little known fact, and because of 9/11, he had to start doing it out of sight of the media and public.

This is a meaningless article. It doesn't matter whether 60% or 100% of those polled believe that Obama inherited this economy. The fact remains, Obama has done nothing to fix the economy or reduce unemployment.

Obama said that he should be judged on how he does in his first term.

A more accurate poll would question how Americans view Obama's performance.

I believe it was Junior Bush who started the Iraq war because Daddy Bush was threatened during his one & only 4year term & Iraq had nothing to do with 911. But wait, there was all those "weapons of mass destruction" that nobody could find & that was the reason for hundreds of lives lost & billions of dollars. I guess those tea tea party people want to blame that on the President too. Oh, and Junior said everyone in America should own a house, could that possibly be what happened to the housing industry.

Republicans picked Romney and Romney's policies are based on the same philosophy as Bush - lower taxes and deregulation. That makes Bush's record "fair game."

Following 9/11, Bush had to either ask for the repeal of his tax cut to pay for the anticipated wars, or to count on Reaganomics, to boost the economy sufficiently to pay for the wars. He took the latter course partially because he thought it would work and partially because he remembered what happened to his father when he raised taxes to pay for Gulf War I (his Party basically dumped him in the second term election).

Great write up. The blame game. Control the press. Go read the Amateur, maybe it will enlighten some of you, just like Ferenheit 911 did. You took the time to read the 911 Bozos book, now take the time to read Amateur. Maybe this is to much to ask , after all, our great liberal congress and senate voted the Obama care Bill without reading it. Under the spell, but Im glad to see many are waking up!

Jose, you are correct. This 8 minute youtube video outlines WHO was responsible for not regulating Freddie & Fannie that caused our economic melt down.

Google "The Bush June 2, 2002 speech in Atlanta, Ga," wherein Bush The Unmentionable calls for the development, construction, sale and financing (with Freddie and Fannie help) of 5.5 million new homes, for low income minorities, as part of his "Ownership Society."

The subprime mortgage boom was never as extensive in Clinton's day, as it was between 2003 and 2006.

                          Gail's right.

Smithlg - The GSEs (Freddie and Fannie) came into the subprime market reasonably late in the game, after 2004, largely at the insistence of Bush The Unmentionable's Administration and investors seeking the higher returns the sub primes were providing.

Timeline of how many times Bush warned about the GSE problem. Late in the GAME? Wikipedia even states that the Housing Bubble most likely was set in motion under Clinton. Get your facts straight!

You fail to get the point, or are in denial. Republicans were in control of Congress from 1993 to 2007. The housing bubble was between 2003 and 2006. Every key position in government was controlled by Republicans...the Fed by Bush appointee Greenspan (followed by Bush appointed Bernanke). the heads of the FDIC, the SEC, the OCC, the FHFA, HUD, ANYONE who had ANYTHING to do with govern meant regulation was Republican.

Bush (or a WH economic advisor) could have stopped the bubble with a phone call. They didn't. Why? Because the bubble was acting as an economic stimulus and because in 2004 their largest campaign contributors were front lions mortgage lenders and Wall Street banks.

Google "Roland Arnall," he was the founder and CEO of Ameriquest Mortgage, at one time the largest subprime lender in the country, and the largest single individual c contributor to the Bush 2004 campaign. Look at the top twenty organizational contributors. Wall Street banks...virtually ALL of the banks subsequently bailed out by Henry Paulson and the Bush Administration.

However, I wouldn't deny that some Democrats were involved as well...you just have the percentages reversed...this was 80% Republican.
