Citing NRA score, Democrats brace for defections in Holder contempt vote

House Democrats are bracing for defections during Thursday's vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress after the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced they will be including the vote in their "future candidate evaluations."

"It is no secret that the NRA does not admire Attorney General Holder," a letter from the NRA to members of the House of Representatives reads. "For years, we have pointed out his history of anti-second Amendment advocacy and enforcement actions."

In an effort to persuade Democrats from voting for the contempt citation because of their fear of repercussions from the enormously powerful gun lobby, aides say that House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is actively engaging members of their caucus to encourage them to vote against the measure, something called "whipping" on Capitol Hill.

"I think there are some members that will consider the recommendations of the NRA," Hoyer said to reporters today. "Whether they think those recommendations are founded or not, I don't know at this point."

The number of Democratic defections could reach 31, according to House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), whose committee voted last Wednesday to move the contempt citation to a full House vote.

Issa cites a letter sent from 31 Democrats to the Obama administration last year asking for them to be forthcoming with details of the Fast and Furious gun-walking operation as a template for possible Democratic "yes" votes.

While 31 Democrats voting for the contempt citation on Thursday may be overly optimistic, the sway of the NRA during an election year is a legitimate concern for Democrats. Democrats running in swing districts need the support of organizations like the NRA (or at least not their opposition) to stop more conservative opponents from taking them down in November.

But the NRA has made it crystal clear that it supports finding Holder in contempt of Congress, and they think members of Congress should as well.

"The reason we support the contempt resolution is the same reason we first called for Attorney General Holder's resignation more than a year ago: the Department's obstruction of congressional oversight of a program that cost lives in support of an anti-gun agenda," the NRA's letter reads. "This is an issue of the utmost seriousness and the NRA will consider this vote in our future candidate evaluations."

Amazing, we actually have a few DEMOCRATS that want to know the TRUTH!!!! I don't believe it. Considering that this F&F was an INVASION and INCURSION of a SOVERIGN Nation. Here is the list of PEOPLE that SHOULD have known, Anything short of this is INSANE thinking. People that would be called upon to approve the invasion. OBAMA, HOLDER, CLINTON, the HSA, FBI, CIA, and the border patrol LEADERSHIP. Yes this is far worse then Watergate.

Watergate was a criminal conspiracy proven to have been conducted from within the White House. As were the Iran/Contra and Wilson/Plame matters.

This matter is an overblown policy discussion the GOP would like to fool you into thinking is important. L,ease read the Katherine Eban aricle and see for yourself.

Thank you Fortune, the truth as most Americans already knew is finally out. And for this revelation, Rep's Issa and Mica should be stripped of their titles and led out of the house in shackles, never to return again, for advancing lie after lie in their failed political attempt to embarrass AG Holder and the White House. But what else could be expected of men with absolutely no integrity???

To call what they perpetrated as a witch hunt is being far too kind. They knew it was a lie from the start and still they obsessed in the false claim that America must know; BS to the max!!!

Yo're right that there's a big difference between Watergate and F&F.

Watergate was a criminal conspiracy run from inside the White House. We can name others. F&F is a policy discussion and an internal squabble in the ATF being presented as something more than what it is: Darrell Issa and the GOP grandstanding during an election year. Please read the Katherine Eban article.

Please tell that BS to Brian Terry's family.

      #104.3 - Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:30 PM EDT

      David,

how do you know that there is no criminal conspiracy coming from within the White House. We have to question the White House's involvement after Obama's executive order not to release documents, don't we? How do you know Obama has nothing to hide? Stop making assumptions to minimize this as a political ploy. The only way to get to the truth is for Holder and Obama to give Congress what they need to complete the investigation. I think they owe this to the Family of Brian Terry! BTW, in case you did not hear, this request to produce documents is not coming from the GOP. There are some Democrats demanding the same information. You will see at tomorrow's contempt vote, 30 or more Democrats are expected to vote for contempt. So you, Obama and his lib friends can't say this is a partisan attack to score points for the election, can't you?

        #104.4 - Wed Jun 27, 2012 9:39 PM EDT

Looks like you guys forgot to read the Eban aricle in Fortune. You should. You might learn something about this matter. My summations here are based on reading the actual materials available to us. Where are you getting these conspiracy theories from?

Once again, Brian Terry wasn't killed by a gun from F&F. Please read the FBI indictment release. Hiding behind his body or his parents so you can try to throw rocks at a President you don't like is shameful, so please stop doing it.

The executive privilege was declared to finally end what has been over a year-long witch hunt. Issa isn't even looking for material on the program now. He's trying to find personal emails to see if he can embarrass people. That's not in his purview.

It's one thing for 31 Dems to sign onto a letter without knowing the facts of the case - that covers them during a tough election year. But voting the AG in contempt because Darrell Issa is having a tantrum? Only 5 are currently thought by Fox News to be doing so, and that's due to overt pressure from the NRA. So, as we've established, a vote on this will be a party line matter which won't fool the public into thinking it is anything more.

I have to ask if you called out the Bush Admin for covering up when Bush asserted the privilege several times. And that was an Admin that really did have a criminal act happen inside the WH.

Greg, where are you getting these ideas?

Brian Terry wasn't killed by F&F - his killer used a different weapon and escaped into Mexico, where he and his AK are still at large. Jaime Zapata wasn't killed by F&F - in his case it was a different investigation and program. So if you have evidence of other Americans killed, please let us know. Nobody has mentioned any.

And who told you "thousands" of Mexicans were killed? Even Darrell Issa when he gave an unfounded number said 200' while a Mexican politician trying to score points said 150 - and neither of those numbers was established as fact by anyone. Are you just assuming that anybody killed with a gun in Mexico in the past two years must have been killed by a gun from F&F?

They push a right wing radical agenda that would make a Nazi blush. Just who the hell does NRA think it is to tell a congressman how to vote. Shame on you NRA for trying to exercise authority that you do not have. It is you NRA who gives gunowners a bad name.

That way when they get ready to take over, which today they do hold 33% of Congress, that is all Hitler held, when he took over, These people are the only ones I ever hear talk about Gun Control. If you don't join their groups, then they will kill you to take your guns away, just like the NAZI"S, Tell your Democratic Congress person to vote against contempt. Every President has used their powers, look at George Bush and his made up war, how many American lives did his little white lie cost, and he used Presidenial Privilege. "A Fortune investigation reveals that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. How the world came to believe just the opposite is a tale of rivalry, murder, and political bloodlust."

That's the subtitle of an "investigation" from Fortune Magazine today, or in other words, a full out distortion and dismissal of the facts in the Fact and Furious case. The article is long and I'm not going to take the time to debunk the entire thing, but just a few points.

First, the article gives a full defense of corrupt ATF Supervisor David Voth while smearing gun dealers as massive suppliers of drug cartels.

Customers can legally buy as many weapons as they want in Arizona as long as they're 18 or older and pass a criminal background check. There are no waiting periods and no need for permits, and buyers are allowed to resell the guns. "In Arizona," says Voth, "someone buying three guns is like someone buying a sandwich."

By 2009 the Sinaloa drug cartel had made Phoenix its gun supermarket and recruited young Americans as its designated shoppers or straw purchasers. Voth and his agents began investigating a group of buyers, some not even old enough to buy beer, whose members were plunking down as much as $20,000 in cash to purchase up to 20 semiautomatics at a time, and then delivering the weapons to others.

Fact: During Operation Fast and Furious, gun dealers repeatedly emailed Voth, asking whether guns they were selling under orders from ATF, were ending up in the wrong hands. Voth assured them they were not. More than two thousands guns trafficked into Mexico and hundreds of dead victims later, that turned out to be a lie. Gun dealers repeatedly raised concerns about ATF telling them to allow straw purchasers using false ID and loads of cash to buy weapons. In 2010, a gun dealer email Voth because a straw purchaser had placed a large order and the dealer wanted to know if he should order more stock. Once again, so he could comply with ATF's order to sell. Voth told him, go right ahead. Order the guns, sell to the bad guys.

On June 17, 2010 a concerned dealer wrote, "As per our discussion about over communicating I wanted to share some concerns that came up. Tuesday night I watched a segment of a Fox News report about firearms and the border. The segment, if the information was correct, is disturbing to me. When you, Emory and I met on May 13th I shared my concerns with you guys that I wanted to make sure that none of the firearms that were sold per our converstation with you and vaious ATF agents could or would ever end up south of the border or in the hands of the bad guys. I guess I am looking for a bit of reassurance that the guns are not getting south or in wrong hands. I know it is an ongoing investigation so there is limited information you can share with me. But as I said in our meeting, I want to help ATF with its investigation but not at the rish of agents [sic] safety because I have some very close firends that are U.S. Border Patrol agents in southern AZ as well as my concern for all the agents [sic] safety that protect our country. If possible please email me back and share with me any reassurances that you can. As always thank you for your time and I send this email with all respect and a heart felt concern to do the right thing."

Voth sent an email on April 2, 2010 saying, "Our subjects purchased 359 firearms during the month of March alone, to include numerous Barrett .50 caliber rifles," he went on, "I believe we are righteous in our plan to dismantle this entire organization and to rush in to arrest any one person without taking in to account the entire scope of the conspiracy would be ill advices to the overall good of the mission." In another email, Voth mentioned 1200 people killed in March 2010, yet still called the program "righteous."

You can read more about Voth here.

Next, the Fortune article claims officials directly involved in Fast and Furious never intentionally trafficked guns into Mexico and and actually seized guns.

Quite simply, there's a fundamental misconception at the heart of the Fast and Furious scandal. Nobody disputes that suspected straw purchasers under surveillance by the ATF repeatedly bought guns that eventually fell into criminal hands. Issa and others charge that the ATF intentionally allowed guns to walk as an operational tactic. But five law-enforcement agents directly involved in Fast and Furious tell Fortune that the ATF had no such tactic. They insist they never purposefully allowed guns to be illegally trafficked. Just the opposite: They say they seized weapons whenever they could but were hamstrung by prosecutors and weak laws, which stymied them at every turn.

The guns sold during Fast and Furious didn't "eventually fall into criminal hands," they were put there intentionally as soon as ATF approved the sale of those guns to guys they knew were straw purchasers before they even walked through the door of the gun dealerships. Not to mention, weapons were never seized until they were found at violent crime scenes; 1400 remain missing.

And of course, according to Fortune, this whole Fast and Furious scandal has been drummed up by...right wing bloggers!

How Fast and Furious reached the headlines is a strange and unsettling saga, one that reveals a lot about politics and media today. It's a story that starts with a grudge, specifically Dodson's anger at Voth. After the terrible murder of agent Terry, Dodson made complaints that were then amplified, first by right-wing bloggers, then by CBS. Rep. Issa and other politicians then seized those elements to score points against the Obama administration, which, for its part, has capitulated in an apparent effort to avoid a rhetorical battle over gun control in the run-up to the presidential election. (A Justice Department spokesperson denies this and asserts that the department is not drawing conclusions until the inspector general's report is submitted.)

Right, exposing the horrors of this scandal according to Fortune is simply bloggers, CBS and Issa "amplifying" "complaints" made by ATF Whistleblower John Dodson. More like, telling the truth, Fortune.

Also, Fortune quotes an IRS agent, but why was the IRS involved in Operation Fast and Furious? Because the IRS in partnership with ATF were giving gun dealers participating in the program advice about how to do their taxes with such a large inflow of cash.

And of course, the Fortune article mocks Arizona for being a pro-Second Amendment state while implying the reason for cartel violence in Mexico is because of limited gun control laws in the state when it was ATF who was deliberately trafficking weapons directly to the cartels in Mexico and doing nothing about it. This is simply an attempt to put a sliver of reasonable doubt into the minds of potential jurors should supervisors like Voth face criminal prosecution down the road.

The rest of my rebuttle to Fortune can be completed by reading my book.

Becca Watkins, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform spokeswoman, has issued the following statement:

“Fortune’s story is a fantasy made up almost entirely from the accounts of individuals involved in the reckless tactics that took place in Operation Fast and Furious. It contains factual errors – including the false statement that Chairman Issa has called for Attorney General Holder’s resignation – and multiple distortions. It also hides critical information from readers – including a report in the Wall Street Journal – indicating that its primary sources may be facing criminal charges. Congressional staff gave Fortune Magazine numerous examples of false statements made by the story’s primary source and the magazine did not dispute this information. It did not, however, explain this material to its readers. The one point of agreement the Committee has with this story is its emphasis on the role Justice Department prosecutors, not just ATF agents, played in guns being transferred to drug cartels in Mexico. The allegations made in the story have been examined and rejected by congressional Republicans, Democrats, and the Justice Department.”

Your slam on a carefully researched and written article is filled with distortions. Nice try, though. I strongly recommend any reader to go through Katherine Eban's thorough examination of this matter themselves and not rely on the above poster's opinion.

Becca Watkins' statement is laughable in itself. It bears little relation to the actual article in Fortune and instead betrays her boss' desperation that this information not get examined in the serious manner that it should. It also shows defensiveness from Issa as it shows that their primary "whistleblowers" we're actually angry employees with axes to grind.

The townhall item you link to just repeats earlier statements without any clarification as to what was really going on with Dodson.

You refer to your book. Did you do your own research for this?

The Democrats better brace for a lot more than defections. Holder is going to be lucky if he stays out of jail. Obama might be able to protect him for awhile, but his sorry A$$ is in big trouble.

Remember at the State of the Union address 2 years ago when Obama berated the Supreme Court and Holder stood up and clapped in their faces?

Well, this executive privilege the President is claiming so he can protect Holder is likely to end up in the Supreme Court. I wonder if Holder would like to stand up and mock the Justices now?

I am a firm advocate of someone owning a firearm as they keep the crime of the religious right at bay of invading a persons home to make them believe as the religious of the Church of England wants an America to believe.

The reason that so many have firearms stems from the Revolutionary War days when British soldiers were allowed to enter into a colonials home stay there and make the family serve them without regard for theirself and their own families well being.

If all of those firearms are removed then crime WOULD increase as would the crazies in the right wing trying to force their way back into the homes of Americans just like the British did.

.....however the NRA has not done enough to curtail the sales of illegal firearms of which the recent Fast and the Furious campaign netted a 90% seizure of firearms sold illegally into Mexico of which most likely those sales came as a result of NRA backed Americans selling firearms to Mexico.

It wasn't the American government that sold the weapons to Mexico.

Eric Holder has not done anything but protect the country by trying to enforce strict gun legislation so that illegal sales of firearms into Mexico, which are then sold back into America on the black market that are used in crimes against Americans was reduced.

                                              Guns do not kill Americans.

The idiot behind the trigger is the one who kills Americans.

Eric Holder is anti-gun as is most of the DNC.

We all know the rumor of Hillary and the UN small arms ban.

Mexican DTO's can import guns from eastern block countries, Cuba, Israel and South Africa they have the cash and the means to do so at anytime.

This was an end run around and attack against the second amendment we all know it.

This operation, Fast and Furious, was done without the consent or knowledge of the Mexican government. Mexican criminals were armed with weapons obtained from gun dealers in the United States with the approval of the Department of Justice.

Approval for something like that has to come from the highest authority. Holder claimed he and the President didn't know about it. If that turns out not to be true, one or both of these guys are in deep Kimchi.

I'll take that bet. Fox has it at 5, doing so under coercion from the NRA. But keep dreaming of that bipartisan contempt vote. This will be a party line vote with no impact other than to embarrass the GOP. Now, if you could get 50-60 Dems to agree to this nonsense, THEN you could say it was bipartisan.

That just shows you the kind of evil crooks who care nothing about anyone but profit. And if you ask most cops , they hate the NRA for that reason and the reason they don't want assault rifles banned. I go hunting. There is not absolutely one use for assault weapons for hunting. If the deer were wearing bullet proof vests they I could understand. The NRA is one of the most digusting lobbies ever to take over congress.

The only numbers we've heard were the unfounded 200 idea that Darrell Issa created, and a 150 number that a Mexican politician created from whole cloth. The odds are the number is a lot lower and may not be attributable solely to F&F. and there haven't been any casualties in the US from F&F since it's been shown that Brian Terry wasn't killed by a F&F gun.
